DERICK ALAN WHARTON

MARBLE ROCK - A funeral Mass of the Angels for Derick Alan Wharton, 6, of 328 Maple St., Marble Rock, will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Roseville, rural Marble Rock, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until time of services today at the Roseville Parish Hall.

Derick Alan Wharton was born Sept. 19, 1995, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City and died Tuesday (Oct. 2, 2001) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital of injuries suffered in a school bus accident in Marble Rock.

He had attended the Rainbow Preschool in Rudd and was attending kindergarten at the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock elementary school in Rockford at the time of his death. He was baptized Sept. 21, 1997, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville.

Derick was the delight of his parents, sisters, grandparents and other relatives, and he returned their love in many special ways. His family cherishes the memories of shared activities with him and remembering the things Derick enjoyed.

He like cutting out sugar cookies with his mom and decorating them fresh out of the oven. He enjoyed mudding with his dad and helping him in the garage. He loved his sisters and grandmas and grandpas.

He was happy riding in Grandpa's semi, and he watered Grandma's flowers every day. His cousin, Jackson, was his special friend. Derick enjoyed school and his teachers and friends there.

Some of the things Derick liked doing were riding his bike, playing with the Lincoln Logs that he received three days prior to his death and watching rodeo events. He dreamed of being a horse rider. He liked Canadian bacon pizza and Red Mountain Dew. Derick enjoyed monster trucks, Scoobydoo, coloring, the computer and video games.

Derick was the beloved son of Rick and Julie (Green) Wharton and brother of Destiny and Grace Wharton, all of Marble Rock. He also is survived by his maternal grandparents Gary Green of Rudd and Robert and Connie Engels-Wiegmann of Marble Rock, paternal grandparents Rick and Betty Wharton of Bristow, maternal great-grandparents Mabel Green of Rudd and John and Maxine Engels of Rockford, paternal great-grandparents Milford and Theresa Moore of Dubuque and his maternal great-great-grandmother, Belva Green of Charles City. Derick also is survived by his aunts and uncles, Bob and Laurie Green of Rudd, Jennifer Green of Marble Rock, Jamie and Jacque Bushbaum of Marble Rock, Jeremiah and Joanne Miller of Marble Rock, Dianne Brandau of Marble Rock, Nick Wiegmann and Sarah Paulus of New Hampton and Michael and Logan Wiegmann of Marble Rock.

He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandfather, Lloyal Green; paternal great-grandparents, Bill and Joyce LaRue; great-aunt, Janet Engels; and cousin, Barbara Ann Engels.

EUGENE SCHUMACHER

CHARLES CITY - Eugene Schumacher, 88, formerly of Marble Rock, died Thursday (Oct. 4, 2001) at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dougherty with Monsignor Walter Brunken officiating. Inurnment will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Dougherty.

A gathering for friends and family will be held one hour prior to service time on Monday at the church.

Eugene was born July 6, 1913, at Marble Rock, the son of Eugene and Christine (Lutz) Schumacher. He farmed in the Marble Rock for many years until retirement.

He is survived by one sister, Florence Multhauf of Stewartville, Minn., and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

FLORENCE M. HANSEN

MASON CITY - Florence M. Hansen, 97, of The Manor, 4 Third St. N.W., died Thursday (Oct. 4, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Douglas Anderson of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday and prior to services on Monday at the funeral home.

CLEAR LAKE - Carole Valentin, 66, of Clear Lake, died Friday (Oct. 5. 2001) at Oakwood Care Center.

WAYNE DALTON KEITH

ALGONA - Funeral services for Wayne Dalton Keith, 93, of Algona, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at First Baptist Church in Algona with Pastor Kevin Hollinger officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery in Algona.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona, with a 7 p.m. Masonic service conducted by Prudence Lodge No. 205 A.F. & A.M.

Wayne Dalton Keith was born on May 24, 1908, in Plum Creek Township, Kossuth County, to Lynn Wood and Claire Dalton Keith. He received his education in the Algona public schools, graduating from Algona High School in 1929.

On Sept. 19, 1929, he married Doris Brown and the couple moved to the Keith family farm in Plum Creek Township. They farmed there for 33 years before moving to Oak Lake in 1962, and into Algona in 1978. They spent many winters in the Mercedes, Texas, area. Doris died June 21, 1987.

On May 26, 1989, Wayne married Dema Janssen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Wayne served on the Burt School Board and the Whittemore Drying Plant Board. He had been recognized as a Master Farmer and a Master Swine Producer and received the Region 2 Conservation Award for soil conservation practices. He represented his area in the Iowa Senate for four years.

He was a member of the Rotary Club and received its Citizen of the Year Award. Wayne had worked in the Farm Bureau, which included serving as local voting delegate, eight years as vice president of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and five years on the Tri-State Farm Service Board. Wayne was a member of the First Baptist Church and Prudence Lodge No. 205 A.F. & A.M.

Wayne died on Friday morning (Oct. 5, 2001) at the Algona Manor Care Center at the age of 93 years.

Survivors include his wife, Dema, of Algona; Wayne's children, Jane McMullen and her husband, Jack, of Northwood, Edgar Keith and his wife, Joyce, of Algona, Mary Yeoman and her husband, David, of Marion, and Margaret Heald and her husband, Terry, of Marion; 12 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Survivors also include Dema's family.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Doris; and one great-grandson.

ROCKFORD - Verner Bernhardt Sorensen, 84, of 109 Second Ave. S.W., Rockford, died Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, 21 Third St., Rockford with Pastor Marjorie Bradshaw officiating . A luncheon will follow the service.

Burial will be held in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

GEORGE W. SEELEY

PLYMOUTH - George W. Seeley, 87, of 912 Rock Street, Plymouth, died Thursday, (Oct. 4, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, Plymouth, with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Tara Amundson officiating. Inurnment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street N.E., Mason City, is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Plymouth, Hospice of North Iowa or the American Cancer Society.

George was born Feb. 19, 1914, in Plymouth, the son of Sheldon "Roy" and Adah (Kruse) Seeley. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1932 and then worked at the Strand Filling Station in Manly for several years. George was united in marriage to Martha Marken on April 3, 1937, in Salem, S.D. The couple resided in Plymouth while George worked with his father as a mechanic at the family garage. He bought the business from his father in 1961 and owned and operated the George Seeley Garage until his retirement on Jan. 31, 1996. In his retirement, George enjoyed traveling with his wife. He was a former longtime Plymouth City Council member and the very first chief of the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department, which he helped to start.

George will be greatly missed by his wife, Martha, of Plymouth, two sons, Dale Martin of Garland, Texas, and Gerald Martin of San Francisco, Calif., one sister, Nellie Lunde of Mason City, two sisters-in-law, Lela Seeley of Huron, S.D. and Helen Marken of Mitchell, S.D., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Wanda Martin, on June 25, 2001, a sister, Alice Tennehill, a brother, David Martin, and six brothers-in-law.

VENTURA - Henry H. Bates, 56, of Ventura, died Friday (Oct. 5, 2001) at his home.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller with the Rev. Owen Gaasedelen officiating. His body will be cremated following the service. Burial will be at a later date.

FLORENCE M. HANSEN

MASON CITY - Mrs. Florence M. Hansen, 97, of Mason City, died Thursday (Oct. 4, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

The funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 8 at the Major Erickson Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Burial will immediately follow at the Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.

There will be visitation from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. today and until time of service on Monday.

She was born October 6, 1903, in Boone to Herman and Mary Ann (Ambs) Scherping and moved frequently in her early years as her father was with the Northwestern Railroad. They moved to Mason City in 1915, and she attended school here. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1922 and worked as a secretary in a law firm. She married R.P. Hansen on Aug. 6, 1927. He preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 1963. She was also preceded in death by her parents. Florence worked with her husband in their construction firm, serving as receptionist, secretary and bookkeeper. She was a long time resident of Mason City, having lived on South Vermont for 74 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mason City and participated in various circles. She was a member of the East State Street Club and belonged to several card clubs.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother. Her family was her life and she was always there for them. She loved her family and friends very dearly and was loved by them.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Briggs and husband Monty of Dayton, Nev., and a son, Richard Hansen and wife Barbara of Sanibel, Fla.; and two sisters, Pearl Fisher and June Stone, both of Mason City. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Mrs. Janice Johnson, Mrs. Linda Messman, Mrs. Carol Ann Wilber, Mrs. Kathryn Simmons, Mr. Alton Crawford, Mr. John Crawford, Mrs. Kristen Gallagher, Mr. Steven Hansen and Mr. Mark Hansen, twenty two great-grandchildren, and thirty two great-great grandchildren.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church of Mason City.

WODEN - Jean A. Crone, 75, of Woden, died Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) at the Westview Care Center, Britt.

CLEAR LAKE - Carole Marilyn Valentin, 66, Clear Lake, formerly of Milroy, Minn., died Friday (October 5, 2001) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake with the Rev. Cliff Close of First Assembly of God, Mason City, officiating.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today and then one hour before the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Walnut Grove City Cemetery, Walnut Grove, Minn. Family suggests memorials to Carole Marilyn Valentin Memorial Fund.

Carole was born July 30, 1935, in Vesta, Minn., the daughter of Erich and Alice (Nelson) Valentin. She contracted polio at the age of sixteen and was tutored her last two years of high school at home. She graduated from Milroy High School in 1954.

She was in Sister Kenny Institute in Minneapolis in an iron lung. Carole accepted the Lord as her personal Savior in 1952 and faithfully lived for Him. She enjoyed reading Christian books, listening to tapes and watching videos. She enjoyed everyone who visited her at Oakwood. Her life was an inspiration to many.

In 1958 she moved to Columbia Heights., Minn., and resided there until 1978, then moved to Clear Lake.In 1982 she became a resident in Oakwood Care Center.

Carole was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, Mason City.

She is survived by her sister, Annette Remick and her husband Bob, Davenport, Fla.; brother, Gary Valentin, Calif.; a niece, Ann Beaty and her husband Greg, Des Moines; nephew, Max Sydow, Minneapolis, Minn. and Michael Remick, Clear Lake; great niece, Daphne Lincicum and several cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Linda Sydow and one baby brother.

MASON CITY - Imogene U. Tucke, 75, died Sunday (Oct. 7, 2001) at the IOOF Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Ron Stein of the First Baptist Church, Mason City, officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home and also for one hour before the service Wednesday.

VERNER BERNHARDT SORENSEN

ROCKFORD - Verner Bernhardt Sorensen, 84, of 109 Second Ave., Rockford, died Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City.

Verner was born Jan. 21, 1917, to Christian and Petra (Bach) Sorensen, in Clear Lake. He received his education in the Clear Lake school district.

Verner served his country in the U. S. Coast Guard and Field Artillery from Jan. 10, 1946, to Jan. 6, 1947.

He married Helen Wrisberg on Sept. 7, 1947, and made their home in Clear Lake. During their marriage they traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, Alaska, Mexico and Denmark. On July 8, 1985, Helen passed away.

Verner worked as a railway mail clerk, sorting mail from Minneapolis to Kansas City, Mo. When the railway mail transportation was terminated he worked in the Clear Lake Post Office until he retired in December 1972.

On Jan 22, 1989, Verner was united in marriage to Alta Greenland in San Benito, Texas. Verner loved spending the winters in Texas. He enjoyed traveling, square dancing, family gatherings, his church and the senior citizens' activities. He was a life time member of the VFW, a 60-year member of the Danish Brotherhood, a member of the Rockford First United Methodist Church, the Rockford Senior Citizens, and the NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees.)

He is survived by his wife, Alta, of Rockford; two step-daughters, Sheryl Cannon and her husband, Joe, of Rockford, and Gilda Olson and her husband, Brian, of Vinton; two step-sons, Roy Greenland of Rockford, and William Scholl and his wife, Kaye, of Carlisle; one step-daughter-in-law, Barbara Scholl and fiance, Dale Oakland, of Brownsdale, Minn.; three sisters, Edith Skene of Ventura, Helen Bergman of Britt and Francis Miller of Ventura; three brothers, Thorvald Sorensen of Plymouth, Irvin Sorensen of Northwood and Hans Sorensen of Menominee Falls, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; sister, Olga Smeby; step-son, Gary Scholl; four brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; one nephew, Chris Sorensen; and an infant niece.

NORTHWOOD - Crystal Juliette Nelson, 87, of Northwood, died Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Her funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 Ninth St. North, Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Interment will follow at South Shell Rock Cemetery, rural Northwood.

Crystal was born Feb. 7, 1914, in Northwood, the daughter of Clarence and Julia (Tue) Severson. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on March 22, 1914, at the North Shell Rock Church, rural Northwood.

Crystal graduated from Northwood High School and was then united in marriage to Arthur Nelson on Nov. 8, 1936, in Northwood. They lived on the Nelson family farm until the early 1950s, at which time the couple purchased their own farm in rural Northwood. After Art passed away in 1980, Crystal purchased a home in Northwood, where she resided until moving to the Lutheran Retirement Home in 1990.

She enjoyed sewing and embroidery, but her focus was taking care of her husband. Crystal was a member of the First Lutheran Church, First Lutheran Women, and several church circles. She also belonged to 3M, an organization of women who originally formed as a Red Cross Circle during WWII and later became a sewing circle, which donated many projects to charity.

Crystal will be greatly missed by her sister, Leona Kenison of Northwood; eight nieces and nephews, Larry Kenison and his special friend, Liz Barber, of Northwood, Brian Kenison and his wife, Connie, of Kensett, Linda Lindsay and her husband, Gary, of Marion, Aljean Smith and her husband, Ed, of Montrose, Clair Severson and his wife, Linda, of Hastings, Minn., Judy Johnson of Stewartville, Minn., Myra Harris and her husband, Lonnie, of Northwood and Mrs. Lee (Marilyn) Severson of Northwood; two sisters-in-law, Francis Jorgenson of Minneapolis and Mabel M. Severson, Northwood; numerous great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Crystal was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Art Nelson, one brother, Leighton Severson, and one nephew, Leighton Severson Jr.

JEAN A. CRONE

WODEN - Jean A. Crone, 75, of Woden, died Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be in Bingham Township Cemetery south of Woden.

Jean Arlene Crone, the daughter of Arthur C. and B. Mildred (Swan) Lonning, was born on a farm near Crystal Lake on Nov. 17, 1925. She attended school in Crystal Lake, graduating in 1943. Jean was a good student. For a brief period of time she lived in Des Moines and worked at the ordinance plant in Ankeny. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught country school near Crystal Lake for about a year and a half.

Jean was married to Dean F. Crone, Feb. 2, 1946, at the Methodist Church in Crystal Lake. Together they farmed and raised their family in the Thompson, Woden and Crystal Lake areas. They moved to their house in Woden in the mid 1980s. She remained active with farming until the mid 1990s, when Alzheimer's disease began to slowly steal her life away. As her disease progressed, Dean became her caregiver and she remained at their home until April 2001, when she entered Westview Care Center.

Jean loved her family, farming, flowers, birds and cooking. She was very active in her church. She loved growing and arranging flowers and won many prizes at local flower shows. She loved tilling the soil with the tractor and killing weeds. She even enjoyed walking beans. One of her greatest joys was providing a good meal to a crowd.

Jean's family remembers her for kindness, for love, her beautiful flower gardens, her hard work and her oatmeal cookies and wonderful strawberry jam. Her grandchildren would fight over who got the last bit, but grandma always had more in the freezer. Her grandchildren loved to ride with her in the tractor.

Jean is survived by her husband, Dean, of Woden; three children, Penny Leuwerke and her companion, Doug Blakely, of Indianola, Jim Crone and his wife, Becky, of Woden and Susan Fehlhafer and her husband, Tommy, of Princeton, Ill.; seven grandchildren; one sister, Vera Jacobson of Mason City; one sister-in-law, Lois Lonning of Neillsville, Wis.; many nieces and nephews; and two aunts, Eva Kuchenreuther of Buffalo Center and Mid Mikkelson of Britt;

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gale; and brother-in-law, Charlie Jacobson.

VENTURA - Henry H. Bates, 55, of Ventura, died Friday (October 5, 2001) at his home.

Henry Hugh Bates, the son of James H. and Thelma (Patty) Bates, was born Dec. 29, 1944, in Memphis, Tenn. He attended school in Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana. He served his country in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War. On Oct. 24, 1981, he married Sharon K. Bauers Isaacson at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller. Henry received his GED in 1995 and continued his education, graduating from Hamilton Business College in 1998. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Buena Vista College in July 2001. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, visiting with family and friends, watching TV and bonfires.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and was an active member of A.A. for the past 22 years.

Henry is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Ventura; four children, Angie Cheney and her husband, Dale, of Mason City, Jason Isaacson and his special friend, Christa DeBoer, of Emmons, Minn., Amber Bates and her special friend, Ben Schranton, of Odessa, Texas, and Crystal Bates and her special friend, John Calvert, of Lubbock, Texas; three grandchildren, Desiree' Cheney, Emerald Cheney and ShaLin Isaacson Hoelscher; four sisters, Patsy Coureton and her husband, Harold, of Missouri, Gail Heiser and her husband, Larry, of Texas, Marlene Clark and her husband, Ray, of Texas and Emily Wilkerson and her husband, Bob, of Florida; a brother, David Bates of Florida; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

FOREST CITY - Edyth Cantrall, 86, of Forest City, died Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

Edyth May Cantrall was born in Bagley, Minn., on Sept. 6, 1915, the daughter of Joel and Sarah (Gillstrap) Beaver. When she was a young woman she moved with her mother and sister to Forest City, completing her education and graduating from Forest City High School in 1932. She attended business school in Omaha, Neb. Edyth worked for Benson High School in Omaha for several years.

She married Charles E. (Jack) Cantrall on Nov. 20, 1937, in Whiting. In 1940, the couple settled in Forest City. Edyth began working as a bookkeeper for Bowen Food Center in 1948. She retired in 1990, after 42 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Forest City.

Edyth was a talented seamstress and enjoyed crocheting and handwork. She crocheted afghans for each of her grandchildren. She did exquisite calligraphy work and loved to go on picnics with family and friends.

Edyth is survived by her children, Charles E. Cantrall Jr. and wife, Mary Ann, of West Bend, and Frances Cantrall of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother and four sisters.

MYRTLE MOSS

CLARION - Myrtle Moss, 83, died Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) at the Clarion Health Care Center, Clarion.

Myrtle was born in Minerva, (Marshall County) on April 19, 1918, the daughter of David Aron and Lena Rogers Johnson. During her youth, she moved frequently and attended many schools including schools in Albia, an Indian reservation in Grand Coulee, Wash., Las Vegas, Nev., and Clarion. She graduated from Clarion High School in 1936.

Myrtle worked at a grocery store in Eagle Grove and at an airplane factory in Minneapolis during the war. Myrtle married Martin Moss on Dec. 23, 1943, in Des Moines. Myrtle and Martin farmed in the Eagle Grove, Holmes, and Clarion areas until 1976. Three daughters were born to Myrtle and Martin - Karen, Margaret and Loretta.

Martin preceded her in death on May 29, 1994 and daughter, Karen, on May 31, 1986. Myrtle moved to the Clarion Health Care Center in March of 1992. While there, she enjoyed the many activities, music, and sharing stories with her extended family and staff. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Family was important to her. She enjoyed cooking for her family and loved to read. She was known for her good sense of humor and for always thinking of others before herself.

She is survived by two daughters, Loretta Krahling and husband, Bill, of Forest City and Margaret Askelsen and husband, Harlan, of Clarion; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law.

ALAN RAY KUNS

LYLE, Minn. - Alan Ray Kuns, 54, of rural Lyle, Minn., died Saturday evening, (Oct. 6, 2001) at his home near Lyle.

He was born Aug. 30, 1947, in Forest City, to Ernest and Vesta (Carr) Kuns. He attended school in Fertile, and graduated from Forest City High School in 1965. On Aug. 1, 1970, he was united in marriage to Kandyce "Kandy" Callies in Forest City. Following his graduation from South Dakota State University in 1972, with a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy, the couple made their home in Minneapolis. While living in Minneapolis, Alan worked as a pharmacist and district manager for K-Mart Corp. In May of 1990, they moved to rural Lyle, where Alan continued to work for K-Mart and in 1998 joined Target as a pharmacist and district manager. He also worked part-time for Ruffalo Drug Store in Rochester as wellas a recruiting pharmacists for Target. He enjoyed rollerblading, baseball, golf, corvettes, airplanes and the internet. He was an active member of Crane Community Chapel, where he served on the church board and as a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his wife, Kandyce "Kandy" Kuns, of rural Lyle; two daughters, Callies (Devin) Voigt of Taopi, and Amanda Kuns, of rural Lyle and her special friend, Matthew Sturm of Austin; a brother, Rev. Neil (Elaine) Kuns of Los Angeles; a sister, Bonnie Kuns, of Forest City; his mother-in-law, Evelyn Callies of Rochester; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dale Kuns; and his father-in-law, Frank Callies.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Crane Community Chapel in Austin, with Rev. Randy Petersen officiating. Interment is at Woodybury Cemetery, rural Lyle. BANCROFT - Arthur "Art" Bergum, 85, of Bancroft, died Monday (Oct. 8, 2001) at the Heritage Nursing Home in Bancroft.

Arthur Bergum was born March 3, 1916, in Bancroft, son of Iver and Katherine (Waters) Bergum. He attended country schools and Greenwood Township Schools. Art served in the Army during WWII.

Art married Betty Jean Dixon on Nov. 16, 1948, in Bancroft. They farmed a short while in Jackson, Minn., and then returned to Bancroft, where he farmed west of town until retiring.

Art enjoyed woodworking, dancing, listening to country western and old-time music, and reading. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

He was a lifetime member of the Kerr-Hammerstrom American Legion Post No. 527 in Lone Rock.

He is survived by four children, Audrey Gabel, of Mason City, Katherine Henry and her husband, James, of Annandale, Va., Tom Bergum and his wife, Suzanne, of Bancroft, and Carrie Bergum, of Minneapolis, Minn.; six grandchildren, David, Sarah and Zachary Gabel, all of Mason City, Suzanne Abdelrazaq, of Sterling, Va., and Nicole and James Henry Jr., both of Annandale, Va.; two sisters, Julia Petticard, of Fenton, and Helen Eichenberger and her husband, Lloyd, of Lakota; a sister-in-law, Ellen Bergum, of Fenton; special friends, Alvin Gabel, of Mason City, and Jessie Saxton, of Winnebago, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Imogene U. Tucke, 75, of Mason City, died Sunday (Oct. 7, 2001) at the IOOF Home in Mason City.

Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Ron Stein of the First Baptist Church officiating.

Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and also for one hour prior to the services on Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to the Imogene U. Tucke Memorial Fund.

Imogene was born Feb. 19, 1926,in Manly, the daughter of Charles and Bertha (Cave) Joyner. She was united in marriage to Vern Tucke in Mason City and was later united in marriage to Don Cecil.

Imogene was a lifelong homemaker who lived all her life in the north Iowa area, including Osage, St. Ansgar and, since 1965, in Mason City.

She enjoyed shopping, cooking and singing on the local radio stations in Mason City in her younger years. Imogene also was an avid CB radio user who was well known by her handle, "Country Girl."

Her great joy was taking care of her family, and she was especially proud of her grandchildren.

Imogene will be greatly missed by her five children, Merle V. Tucke and his wife, Nancy, of Chester, Gary Tucke and his wife, Kathy, of Rochester, Minn., Ronald Tucke and his wife, Helen, of St. Ansgar, Debra J. Pringnitz and her fiancé, Tony Reineke, of Garner, and Melody Griffith and her husband, Kerry, of Pepin, Wis.; one sister, Olga Huntley, of Mason City; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Charles Joyner and Harmon Carroll; and two sisters, Ruby Krienke and Velma Stiles.

JUNE KEIL

BRITT - June Keil, 85, of Britt passed away Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for Mrs. Keil will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be in Buffalo Township Cemetery near Titonka, Iowa.

Friends may greet the family from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Home in Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church.

June, the daughter of Guy and Jennie Swanson Dimond, was born June 18, 1916, on a farm near Britt. She attended school near her rural Britt home until March of 1928. The family then moved to a larger farm northwest of Wesley, where she completed seventh and eight grades in the nearby school. The following fall, she returned to Britt where she attended high school; she boarded in town those years, returning home most weekends. She was graduated in May 1934 and then attended one year at Britt Junior College, after which she taught two years in a rural school.

In August of 1937, she married Howard Sparks of Wesley at her parents' home. The couple resided and farmed near Wesley with his brother.

In September of 1938, a baby boy, Darryl, was born to them. Five years later, in June 1943, they welcomed a second son, James. By this time, they were living on their own farm, near Burt. They farmed until May 1967, when Howard passed away. In October 1969, Darryl passed away very unexpectedly, followed in October 1977 by his widow, Betty.

June continued to live on the farm until October 1976, when she married Maurice Keil of Ledyard, and moved to Ledyard. In the fall of 1987, they purchased a home and moved to Britt. Maurice passed away of cancer in January 1996.

June was a member of United Methodist Churches wherever she lived; the last one being in Britt. She taught Sunday school and was Sunday school superintendent for many years.

She enjoyed church work, Bible Studies, Nota Bene Club, reading and most of all her family. She also loved gardening and growing glads.

June is survived by her son, James, and his wife, Bonnie, of Bettendorf; two grandchildren, Brandi, of Bettendorf, and Joshua and his wife, Jenny, of Dallas Texas; four stepchildren and their mates, Brent Keil, of Naperville, Ill., Bruce Keil, of Lakeville, Minn., Pam DeBoer, of Northfield, Minn., and Scott Keil, of Manly; six stepgrandchildren; 18 nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Howard Sparks; son, Darryl and his wife, Betty; her parents; her second husband, Maurice; one sister, Carolyn Dawson, and one brother, Myrwin Dimond.

BEVERLY BRADBURY KERLIN

MASON CITY - Beverly Bradbury Kerlin passed away on Sunday (Oct. 7, 2001). She was a resident of Mason City for many years.

She was born in Schaller, Iowa on Oct. 13, 1923. She moved to Mason City at 5 years of age. She attended Mason City schools and graduated in 1942.

She was united in marriage to Glenn Kerlin of Rudd in 1943. They moved to Anaheim, Calif., in 1950. They then settled in Seattle, Wash. They moved back to Mason City, Iowa, in September of 2001.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Glenn Kerlin, of Mason City; two sons, David Kerlin, of Rudd, and Joel Kerlin, of Biloxi, Miss.; one daughter, Glenda Kerlin, of Seattle, Wash.; one brother, Harold Bradbury, of Oregon, and one sister, Virginia Nuehring, of Mason City.

One daughter, Janice, preceded her in death; three brothers, Merle Bradbury, Wayne Bradbury and Sam Bradbury; mother, Hazel; father, Harold Bradbury.

She will be cremated and taken back to Seattle.

MARY A. ZROSTLIK

GARNER - Mary A. Zrostlik, 84, of Garner, died Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with the Father Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Duncan.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with a rosary society rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Mary Agnes Zrostlik, the daughter of John and Mary (Hadacek) Zrostlik, was born March 24, 1917, in Duncan. She attended the rural schools of Garfield Township, graduated from Britt High School and received her teaching certificate from Britt Junior College.

Mary taught in the rural schools of Hancock County for several years and worked at Gallaghers Variety Store in Garner and the Hancock County Auditor's Office in Garner. For the next 34 years, she worked at the United Home Bank in Mason City, retiring in 1987. She continued to live in Mason City until 1993, when she moved to the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

She enjoyed her family, friends, volunteering at Mercy Hospital and traveling.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City, St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan, Catholic Workman's Lodge and the Mason City Wa-Tan-Ye Club.

Mary is survived by three brothers and a sister, John Zrostlik, of Britt, George Zrostlik, of Garner, Rose Kern, of Wesley, and Paul Zrostlik and his wife, Lila, of Garner; nine nieces and nephews; and seven great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Joe Zrostlik; a sister, Betty Holecek; and two brothers-in-law, Ambrose Kern and Ed Holecek.

CLAUD M. HAIN

VENTURA - Claud M. Hain, 86, of 105 E. Lake St., Ventura, died Sunday (Oct. 7, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Services are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ventura United Methodist Church in Ventura, with the Rev. Paul Hasel officiating. Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and then one hour before services at the church.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of North Iowa.

Claud was born Jan. 15, 1915, in Rockford, Iowa, the son of Clarence F. and Clara M. (Spofford) Hain. He attended rural school in Rockford. He farmed in the Rockford area and later hauled freight. Dorothy Hain was the mother of their children.

Claud married Lavon Meinders on Nov. 28, 1981, in Ventura. He was the first Ventura police officer. He later drove school bus for Ventura School and was also their bus mechanic for many years.

Claud enjoyed fishing, traveling, camping, visiting with people, going to auctions, riding horses, calling square dances and gardening.

Claud is survived by his wife, Lavon Hain, of Ventura; three children, Clara Frank, of Mason City, Joan Jones and her husband, Gene, of Kansas City, Mo., and Mary Nutting and her husband, Larry, of Aitkin, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Shirley Basgall Hain, of Mason City; three stepchildren, Linda Beier and her husband, Roger, of Mason City, Richard Meinders and his wife, Fran, of Manly, and Larry Meinders and his wife, Lorri, of Mason City; sister- in- law,Viola Hain, of Nora Springs; 14 grandchildren, 10 stepgrandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, eight stepgreat-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

TEMPLE, Texas - Jane Helen Peterson Kirk, beloved wife of Charles M. Kirk, of Temple, Texas, formerly of Mason City, was born Feb. 6, 1930, and died Oct. 1, 2001, at Temple, Texas, of cardiac arrest.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

VERNER BERNHARDT SORENSEN

ROCKFORD - Verner Bernhardt Sorensen, 84, of 109 Second Ave. S.W. in Rockford, died Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, 21 Third St. in Rockford with Pastor Marjorie Bradshaw officiating, with a luncheon following the service. Interment will held in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Monday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 302 W. Main in Rockford, and will continue one hour prior to services today at the church.

Verner was born Jan. 21, 1917, to Christian and Petra (Bach) Sorensen in Clear Lake. He received his education in the Clear Lake School District.

Verner served his country in the U.S. Army Coast Guard and Field Artillery from Jan. 10, 1941, to Jan. 6, 1946.

He married Helen Wrisberg on Sept. 7, 1947, and they made their home in Clear Lake. During their marriage they traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, Alaska, Mexico and Denmark. On July 8, 1985, Helen passed away.

Verner worked as a railway mail clerk, sorting mail from Minneapolis to Kansas City, Mo. When the railway mail transportation was terminated, he worked in the Clear Lake Post Office until he retired in December of 1972.

On Jan. 22, 1989, Verner was united in marriage to Alta Greenland in San Benito, Texas. Verner loved spending the winters in Texas. He enjoyed traveling, square dancing, family gatherings, his church and the Senior Citizens activities.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW, a 60-year member of the Danish Brotherhood, a member of the Rockford First United Methodist Church and the Rockford Senior Citizens, and the NARFE (National Association Retired Federal Employees).

He is survived by his wife, Alta, of Rockford; two stepdaughters, Sheryl Cannon and her husband, Joe, of Rockford, and Gilda Olson and her husband, Brian, of Vinton; two stepsons, Roy Greenland, of Rockford, and William Scholl and his wife, Kaye, of Carlisle; one stepdaughter-in-law, Barbara Scholl and fiance, Dale Oakland, of Brownsdale, Minn.; three sisters, Edith Skene, of Ventura, Helen Bergman, of Britt, and Francis Miller, of Ventura; three brothers, Thorvald Sorensen, of Plymouth, Irvin Sorensen, of Northwood, and Hans Sorensen, of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; one brother-in-law, Robert Wrisberg of Davenport; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; sister, Olga Smeby; stepson, Gary Scholl; four brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; one nephew, Chris Sorensen, and an infant niece.

HELENA M. BOLAND

GARNER - Helena M. Boland, 94, of Fort Dodge, formerly of Garner died Sunday (Oct. 7, 2001) at the Villa Care Center in Fort Dodge.

Her funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peace Reformed Church south of Garner with the Rev. Jeff DeBoer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Helena Minnie Boland, the daughter of Otto and Mathilda (Katter) Schlawin, was born Nov. 11, 1906, at Garner. After attending school at Liberty Township School No. 1, she worked at the Mertz Store and Post Office in Hayfield.

On Dec. 14, 1927, she was married to Henry Boland at her parents' home in Garner. They farmed in the Garner-Hayfield area and for 24 years, near Klemme.

After retiring from farming, they moved to Forest City, where Helena worked at Waldorf College for 10 years. In 1988, she moved to Fort Dodge to be near her daughters.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, embroidering and reading.

She was a member of Peace Reformed Church and was a former Sunday school teacher.

She is survived by her two daughters, Phyllis Lundberg and her husband, Douglas, of Humboldt, and Lois Zeka and her husband, William, of Fort Dodge; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mathilda Eenhuis, of Mason City, and Myra Stahl, of Belmond; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Boland, on May 21, 1962; an infant son; a daughter, Margaret Rollefson, in 1980; her son-in-law, Robert Rohrer; an infant grandson; her parents; two sisters, Sadie Lemke and Norva Cole; and a brother, Roger Schlawin.

EMIL G. VALASEK

OSAGE - Emil G. Valasek, 79, of Osage, died Monday (Oct. 8, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage, of complications due to diabetes.

Emil was born June 7, 1922 in Alexandria, Minn., the son of Anton and Appolena (Smysik) Valasek. He moved with his parents to Mitchell County as a youth.

Emil was united in marriage to Janele Bayliss on Aug. 11, 1960. They lived and farmed north of Osage. To this union were born three children. He farmed all of his life. Emil also worked at Decker Meat Packing in Mason City and Oliver Corporation in Charles City.

He was a lifetime member of the Bohemian Lodge, enjoyed going to sale barns, fishing and raising his Holstein cattle.

His funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be at the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

MASON CITY - Frederick DeBoer, 95, formerly of 2344 22nd St. S.W., died Monday (Oct. 8, 2001) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Frederick was born Jan. 6, 1906 the son of Ralph and Grietje (Geerts) DeBoer in Beerta, Holland. At the age of six he came to the United States with his family. On October 29, 1939 Frederick was united in marriage to Lucille Jackson in Dumont. The couple later moved to Mason City where Frederick was employed by the Armour Meat Packing Company.

Frederick was a red rose fanatic who enjoyed growing and tending to them. He also enjoyed fishing and camping. In his younger years Frederick loved to go hunting.

Frederick was a member of the Mason City Baptist Church.

Frederick is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mr. DeBoer was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lucille; a sister in infancy, Claire; a brother in infancy, Frederick; and two brothers, George and Enno DeBoer.

STEVEN TERRY THOMPSON

LELAND - Steven Terry Thompson, 52, of Leland, died Sunday (Oct. 7, 2001) at Mercy Hospital-North Iowa in Mason City. A private family service will be held.

Steven Terry Thompson was born Aug. 31, 1949 in Forest City, the son of Arthur Leonard and Edith (Hermanson) Thompson. Steven was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Leland, and graduated from Lake Mills High School Class of 1967.

He had worked at Fleetguard Industries in Lake Mills for 11 years, but resigned to take care of his Mother.

Steven is survived by his mother, Edith Thompson, of Leland; two brothers, Richard and his wife, Wilma Thompson, of Forest City; Marshall and his wife, Mary Thompson, of Lake Mills; one sister, Sharon and her husband, Michael Walsh, of Mason City; along with their families; and many other relatives and friends.

Steven was preceded in death by his father; one nephew, Joseph Robert Thompson; and one niece, Katelyn Halloran.

RHONDA K. FISCHBECK

MASON CITY - Rhonda K. Fischbeck, 49, of 10 S. Taylor Ave., died Sunday (Oct. 7, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa following a long and determined battle with diabetes.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams Ave. with the Rev. Richard "Rick" Eichenlaub officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Rhonda was born Feb. 10, 1952 in Mason City, the daughter of Robert L. and Patricia (O'Neil) Nutting. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1970.

Rhonda loved the opportunity to work with children, helping to heal their hearts and minds. Following graduation from the University of Kansas, Rhonda worked a short time for Mutual Federal Savings & Loan, then several years at Gerard of Iowa.

After obtaining her Masters of Social Work from the University of Iowa in 1989, she practiced therapy at the Pediatric and Adolescent Clinic in Mason City as a licensed social worker until her retirement early this year.

Rhonda was active in her church, several volunteer committees concerning children in the community and in Parents United. For ten years, Rhonda was mom to 13 foster children. She gave inspiration and hope to many children and families.

Rhonda was united in marriage to John Fischbeck on Dec. 28, 1974 in Mason City. Her greatest and dearest accomplishment is her daughter, Elizabeth Anne, whom she and her family are very proud of.

Rhonda will be missed by her family and many friends who she has touched by her compassion, wisdom and gentle love.

She is survived by her husband, John Fischbeck, of Mason City; daughter, Elizabeth Fischbeck, of Mason City; father, Robert L. Nutting and wife, Norma, of Clear Lake; uncle, Donald O'Neil and wife, Barbara, of Mason City; aunt, Linda O'Neil, of Phoenix, Ariz.; stepsister, Marilyn Tecklenburg and husband, Jeff, of Muscatine; stepbrother, James Boehnke and his wife, Renee, of Clear Lake; great aunt, Martha "Sis" Nutting of Mason City; and several cousins.

CLEAR LAKE - Sophus Burnell Holstad, 86, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (Oct. 7, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Sophus was born Aug. 23, 1915, on a farm near Kensett, the son of Albert and Amanda (Roslien) Holstad. He completed his education in Manly and Kensett schools. Sophus continued helping his family with farming until entering the Army on Oct. 7, 1941.

After completing his basic training at Camp Wallace, Texas, Sophus served 44 months during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. He attained Sergeant in the Coast Artillery Anti-Air-Craft and was awarded two bronze stars, several meritorious ribbons and was honorably discharged on Oct. 10, 1945.

Sophus married Eldora Lau on June 8, 1947 at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. To this union four children were born, Alyn, twin girls, Sharyl and Sharyn, and Lynn.

Their first 11 years were spent farming near Kensett, and Sophus was employed as a sales representative in Worth County for Lowe Seed Co. In 1957 when promoted to District Sales Manager for a 15 county area, they moved to Clear Lake.

Twelve years later he accepted a position as Regional Manager for Vi-Amino Feeds Inc., Colfax, Ill. He retired in 1983 and continued to live in Clear Lake.

Sophus was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He served on the church councils of Elk Creek and Zion Lutheran Churches while continuing to volunteer as an usher and committee member for many years.

Sophus was baptized and confirmed at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, IA. Sophus served as a director of townships for the Farm Bureau organization.

He was a charter member and volunteer of the Sons of Norway, Midnotsol Land 535. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 4868 of Clear Lake.

In earlier years, he loved to dance, travel, go on fishing trips and gardening. In later years he enjoyed listening to big band music, playing cards, reading and completing word puzzles.

He was committed to keeping a daily journal for many years and entertaining his friends with Norwegian stories. Sophus, being proud of his Norwegian heritage, took great pride in making Lefse.

Sophus' greatest joy was spending time with his family and visiting with family and friends. He will be sadly and greatly missed by his family and friends.

Sophus is survived by his wife of 54 years, Eldora Holstad, of Clear Lake; two sons, Alyn Holstad and his wife, Sandra, of Gilbert, Ariz., and Lynn Holstad and his wife, Vicky, of Silvercliffe, Colo.; two daughters, Sharyl Rubin and her husband, Gregory, of Glenview, Ill. and Sharyn Hendrickson and her husband, Keith, of Omaha, Neb.; eight grandchildren, Tracy Holstad, Todd Holstad and his wife, Kristen, Heather Hendrickson, Joel Hendrickson, Carissa Holstad, Aaron Holstad, Michael Rubin and his wife, Marsha, and Stephen Rubin; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arnold Holstad and his wife, Amy, of Mesa, Ariz., and Harlan Holstad and his wife,Virginia, of Hampton; four sisters, Berniece Rodemeyer and her husband, Edward, of Hampton, Marcella Picken and her husband, Donald, of Mason City, Orla Nelson and her husband, Gordon, of Joice, and Lorette Kroneman and her husband, Merle, of Mason City; two aunts, Doris Holstad and Mildred Citurs; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Amanda Holstad; two sisters, Alva Reetz and Loraine Albertus.
