IRVINGTON - Ardain "Toby" Eastman, 72, of Irvington, died Monday (Nov. 19, 2001) at the Good Samaritan Center in Algona.

His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Irvington, with Dr. Dave Ullom officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Irvington.

There will be a public Masonic service at 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona.

BRITT - John McMahon, 98, of Britt, died Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, with Father Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Corwith.

MASON CITY - Virginia Steneker, 88, of 824 Second St. S.E., died Monday (Nov. 19, 2001) at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive S.W. with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore officiating.

ANKENY - James Robert Knowles, 73, of Ankeny, formerly of Garner, died Monday (Nov. 19, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Unionville Cemetery in Unionville, Mo., with the Rev. Walter Griffen officiating.

Visitation will begin after 8 a.m. Friday at the Newton Funeral Home, 1122 Main in Unionville, Mo., with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

ROBERT J. PODHAJSKY

TRAER - Robert J. Podhajsky, 70, of Traer, died Monday (Nov. 19, 2001) at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo after a short illness.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer. Interment will follow at the St. Paul Catholic Church Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Thursday at the Overton Funeral Home, 714 First St. in Traer, with a prayer service at 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, 2001 Kimball Ave., Waterloo, Iowa 50702.

Robert was born July 3, 1931, at Toledo, Iowa, a son of William Sr. and Mayme (Valenta) Podhajsky. Bob received his education in country school and graduated from Traer High School in 1949.

He then farmed with his father until he entered the United States Navy, serving during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he attended Iowa State University in Ames, but later returned to farming.

On Feb. 20, 1971, Bob was united in marriage to Cecilia Svoboda at St. Vaclav Catholic Church in Clutier. They made their home in Traer while Bob continued to farm.

Bob was an active member of the community, serving on several boards and belonging to several organizations.

Survivors include his wife, Cecilia, Traer; five sons, Father Christopher Podhajsky, associate pastor at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City; Nicholas and his wife, Joey, of Traer; Jeffrey, of State Center; Michael of Washington D.C., and Richard, of Traer; one daughter, Theresa, of Sageville, and a brother, Stanley, of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Maria, and a brother, Bill.

LEONARD ALBERT HRUBES

CLEAR LAKE - Leonard Albert Hrubes, 79, of 807 N. Eighth St., Clear Lake, died Monday (Nov. 19, 2001) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

The funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, with Monsignor Robert Hogan officiating. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Cemetery in Duncan.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

The family suggests memorials to the Leonard A. Hrubes Memorial Fund.

Leonard was born Sept. 10, 1922, in rural Britt, the son of Albert and Ann (Wellik) Hrubes. He attended rural school. He married Arlene Buseman on Nov. 23, 1943, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan.

He farmed in the Klemme, Rudd and Forest City areas. They later moved to Garner, and in 1971 moved to Clear Lake. He worked for Woodford Wheeler Lumber Co. in Clear Lake until his retirement.

Leonard enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake.

Leonard is survived by his two children, Jim Hrubes and his wife, Jan, of Sun City, Ariz., and Mary Mitthun and her husband, Marlin, of Thompson; five grandchildren, Bob Hrubes, of Des Moines, Kerri Hrubes, of Pearland, Texas, Jackie Mitthun and her fiancé, Kim Asmus, and their daughter, Haley, of Thompson, Kurt Mitthun and his wife, Paula, of Thompson, and Julie Armstrong and her husband, Paul, of Buffalo Center; nine great-grandchildren, Casandra, Kyle, Cody, Chelsey, Kory, Nicholas, Jake, Haley and Megan; and one sister, Margaret Katuin, of Garner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Arlene, and one brother, Elmer Hrubes.

BARBARA VIVIAN BOEHMER

MASON CITY - Barbara Vivian Boehmer, 44, of Mason City, died Monday (Nov. 19, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A private memorial service will be held at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Clifford Close of the Assembly of God Church of Mason City officiating. Inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. According to her wishes, her body was cremated.

Barbara Vivian Boehmer was born on Nov. 7, 1957, in Mason City, the daughter of Dale and Betty (Murl) Cheney. She attended and received her education in the Mason City School system, graduating from Mason City High School in 1976.

Barbara was a very loving mother and homemaker, and enjoyed her music and playing her piano.

She was united in marriage to Joe Boehmer on Dec. 28, 1995, in Forest City.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Joe Boehmer, of Mason City; two children, Kayce and Titus Usher, both of Mason City; her parents, Dale and Betty Cheney, of Mason City; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Duane and Ilene Boehmer, of Waterloo; mother-in-law, Arleta Rosenbaum, of Cedar Falls; two brothers, Dale Cheney Jr. and his wife, Angie, of Mason City, John Cheney and Tammy Cox, of Mason City, two sisters, Kelly Mino and her husband, Gale, of Martinez, Ga., and Carol Cheney, of Mason City; two brothers-in-law, Larry and Mark Boehmer, both of Waterloo; two sisters-in-law, Connie Ackles, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Cindy Boehmer, of Waterloo; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Her maternal and paternal grandparents preceded Barbara in death.

CHARLES CITY - Mrs. Bill (Dorothy) Thorsen, 96, formerly of 66 Cedar Terrace South, died Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) at the Salsbury Baptist Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, 105 Chapel Lane, with the Rev. Dr. S. Todd Yeaton officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

WODEN - Margaret F. Bode, 95, of Sun City, Ariz., and formerly of Woden, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, in Sun City.

Her memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Woden with the Rev. Lois Abel of the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center officiating.

VIRGINIA STENEKER

MASON CITY - Virginia Steneker, 88, of 824 Second St. S. E. died Monday (Nov. 19, 2001) at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Virginia Steneker was born May 9, 1913, in Burlington, the daughter of Charles A. and Mary F. (Brugge) Streed. She graduated from Fairfield High School, received her normal training then taught school in rural Iowa for several years.

She married C.W. "Bill" Steneker on May 30, 1939, in Fairfield. The Stenekers moved to Mason City in 1951. Virginia was an active volunteer for the schools.

For several years she tutored first- through third-graders in reading at Garfield School.

She was involved in the Jefferson Elementary School PTA and a member of PEO Chapter IY, Sorosis Guided Study Club and the First Presbyterian Church.

Virginia is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Steneker McRoberts, of St. Louis, Mo.; five grandchildren, Vickie, William, Christine, Cherie and Amanda; three great-grandchildren, Lauren, Brandon and Billy.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Shelly; husband, Bill; three brothers, and two sisters.

BONNIE JEAN AL-JAZAF

CLEAR LAKE - Bonnie Jean Al-Jazaf, 61, of Clear Lake died Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) at her home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Ventura, with the Rev. Paul Hasel officiating. Burial will be in the Ventura Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.

Bonnie Jean Al-Jazaf was born on Oct. 20, 1940, in Ventura, the daughter of Richard and Lucille (Ringgenberg) Winters. She attended and received her education in the Ventura school system.

She also graduated from the La James College of Hairstyling in 1980, and owned the Hanford Salon in Mason City for a number of years.

On July 7, 1996, she made a profession of faith to be baptized into the Christian faith at the Agape Christian Family Church in Clear Lake by Pastor David L. Toyne.

She had several hobbies, and had time to have a full-time job as a cook at the Casey's General Store in Clear Lake.

The hobbies she enjoyed were camping, fishing, painting, cooking, collecting cookbooks and e-mailing with her many "Net" friends, but her great love and enjoyment was spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Terri King and her husband, Tim, of Dougherty, and Kim Hesler and her husband, Greg, of Ventura; four grandchildren, Travis King of Dubuque, Kylie Hesler of Mason City, Crystal King of Mason City, and Zach Hesler of Ventura; three brothers and two sisters, Ron Winters and his wife, Pat, of Watertown, S. D., Gary Winters and his wife, Cheryl, of Alexander, Dick Winters and his wife, Jo, of Mason City, Pat Osier, of Mason City, and Cindy Ebeling and her husband, Jim, of Mason City; as well as other relatives and friends.

Her parents, a niece, Kelly Jo, and a nephew, Mark Winters, preceded her in death.

Bonnie will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all her family and friends.

ROGER DAVID MILES

CLEAR LAKE - Roger David Miles, 46, of 7639 N. Eastlake Terrace, Chicago, Ill., died on Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) of natural causes at his home.

Funeral memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, with Monsignor Robert Hogan officiating. Inurnment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Roger was born on Oct. 11, 1955, in Forest City, the son of William and Delores (Falada) Miles. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1974 and then graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in chemical engineering.

He was employed in Chicago with Corn Products International and later was transferred to the Winston-Salem, N.C. plant. He lived there five years and then returned to Chicago with assignments in South Africa, Argentina, Columbia, Canada and across the United States. In 1999 he began employment with CF Industries as the Manager of Process Engineering; he was responsible for construction in seven upper Midwest states.

Roger's hobbies included architectural designing, charcoal sketching, golf, spectator sports, deep-sea fishing, scuba diving and nature.

Survivors include his parents, William and Delores Miles of Clear Lake; two brothers, Randy Miles and his wife, Linda, of Issaquah, Wash., and Ron Miles of the Sea Ranch, Calif.; several aunts and uncles, Stan and Arlene Miles of Milwaukee, Wis., Francis and Ann Falada of West Des Moines, Jim and Betty (Miles) Carson of Aurora, Ill., Agnes (Falada) Simper of Inglewood, Calif., Audrey Miles of Huntington Beach, Calif., Hugh Myers of Arcadia, Calif., and Nelson Wild of San Francisco, Calif.; several cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, two uncles and three aunts.

HARLEY E. JACOBSEN

OSAGE - Harley E. Jacobsen, 85, of Osage died Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage.

Harley Erastus Jacobsen was born July 21, 1916, at Nora Springs, the son of Nels and Lucy (Harden) Jacobsen.

He was united in marriage to Rosie Paulsen on Nov. 17, 1941, and they just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

From April 1942 to January 1946, Harley served in the U.S. Army during World War II. His tour included the Pacific Theater, where he was a crew chief.

After his discharge, Harley and Rosie farmed two years at Rockford, then they bought a farm northwest of Nora Springs where they farmed from 1948 until 1984.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and playing cards.

His funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 833 Ash St., Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Rock Grove Cemetery, rural Nora Springs, with military rites conducted by the HDS American Legion Post 449 of Nora Springs.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Rosie Jacobsen, of Osage; to this union were born three children, Raymond Jacobsen and his wife, Jolene, of Nora Springs, Lorraine Richardson and her husband, Jim, of Ranburne, Ala., and Harley Brent Jacobsen, of Nora Springs; seven grandchildren, Jody Dow, John Jacobsen, Chet Field, Cheri Cole, Heather Marker, Jessica Featherston and Jordan Jacobsen; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Karen Vikturek; a brother, Harold "Bud" Jacobsen; and a grandchild, Chris Field.

JANAAN NEWELL

AUSTIN, Minn. - Janaan (Crawford) Newell, 71, of Austin, died Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born Doris Janaan Wilts on Sept. 2, 1930, in Mason City, to Fred C. and Marian L. (Heinz) Wilts. Janaan graduated from Mason City High School in 1947. She attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, graduating in 1951 with a teaching degree. She married Angus (Gus) Crawford on Sept. 9, 1951, in Mason City. He preceded her in death in 1970. She later married Donald Newell on Sept. 2, 1977, in Wayzata, Minn. He preceded her in death in 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Janaan worked as a substitute teacher in Berkeley, Mo. She also worked for the Census Bureau in Oshkosh, Wis., and later worked for the Fazendin Realtors in Wayzata, Minn., until her retirement.

She had a great love of the outdoors, including bird watching and boating. She also had a fondness for cats.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Howie and Sherri Crawford, Austin; a daughter, Ellen Carle, St. Paul, Minn.; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Becky and Tom Fenton, Atlanta, Ga.; a stepson, Jerry Newell, Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Vigran, Exeter, Calif.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mayer Funeral Home, Austin, Minn., with the Rev. Kris Wee officiating. The family will greet friends one-half hour before the service at the funeral home. Violinist will be Sue Radloff.

MILTON O. BILYEU

ALGONA - Milton O. Bilyeu, 74, of Algona, died Thursday (Nov. 22, 2001) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Algona, with the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Algona.

HELENA MANNETTER

ELMA - Helena Mannetter, 92, of Elma, died Thursday (Nov. 22, 2001) of natural causes at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Her funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, also in Charles City.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Conway Funeral Home in Elma, and also an hour before services at the church.

Helena Evelyn Schmidtke Mannetter was born March 16, 1909, in rural Orchard, the daughter of Alexander Ferdinand and Helena Christine (Guderian) Schmidtke. She was baptized in April 1909 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City by Rev. Casselman. As a young girl she moved with her family to rural Osakis, Minn., where she attended the local country District 23 School. In 1926 she graduated from Osakis High School and continued her education there, taking additional secretarial courses the next year. Later she moved back to rural Orchard with her parents. She worked as a housekeeper for the Bill and Clara Wandro family, caring for Donald, Gallus and Gale.

On Sunday, Sept. 6, 1942, she and Siegfried Fred Mannetter were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church in Nashua by the Rev. Walter M. Fritschel. The couple lived and farmed in the Deerfield area. In March 1943, they moved to rural Elma, where they farmed, and in March 1953, moved to the farm where she was residing at the time of her death.

She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, where she was active in her church circle. Through the years she was a Mitchell County Extension Council Member, a member of the Farm Bureau and the Farm Bureau Women's Organization. She enjoyed going on bus trips with the Osage Senior Center. But most of all she loved her three grandchildren and her great-granddaughter, Mija.

She is survived by a daughter, Kay (Algie A.) Slindee, of Elma; grandchildren, Sonja (Michael) Cotton, of Charles City, Brent, of Elma and Nadia, of Cedar Rapids; a great-granddaughter, Mija Selene Cotton; a brother, Harold (Wanda) Schmidtke, of Oscoda, Mich.; two sisters-in-law, Laura (Wilbur) Henry, of Charles City, and Regina Wise, of California; a brother-in-law, Agon (Barbara) Mannetter, of Charles City; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Zeke (Oct. 21, 1993); infant daughter, Dianne Lynne; two sisters, Frances and Ruth; and two brothers, Vernon and Donald.

ROCKFORD - Donald R. Gross, 79, of 209 Second St. S.W. in Rockford, died Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

ORIS TILFRED GOLBERG

ST. ANSGAR - Oris Tilfred Golberg, 99, of St. Ansgar, died on Thursday (Nov. 22, 2001) at the Good Samaritan Center in St.Ansgar.

His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle, Minn., with the Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating. Burial will be at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mona.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

Oris Tilfred Golberg, son of Olaf and Andrena (Austinson) Golberg, was born June 22, 1902, on a farm near Lyle, Minn., at the Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church in rural Lyle and confirmed his faith at the age of 14 on June 3, 1917, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle.

As a young man, Oris played baseball and continued his love of the game as a Minnesota Twins fan.

On March 25, 1933, Oris was married to Clara Nelson at the Lyle Parsonage. This union was blessed with three children, twin sons, Nels and Olaf, and a daughter, Karen. As a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Lyle, he served on the Board of Trustees and was active in the Lutheran Brotherhood. He was a member of the Mona School Board and served as an election official for Otranto Township.

His adult life was spent on the farm south of Lyle, where he raised his family, did general trucking and farmed until 1975, when he and his wife, Clara, retired to the Lincoln Apartments in Osage.

Realizing the need for additional assistance in their daily needs, they made the move to the Worth Living Center in St. Ansgar in September 1987. Because of failing health, Oris entered the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar in March 1997, where he passed away on Thursday (Nov. 22, 2001) .

Oris was preceded in death by his wife, Clara, on Feb. 26, 1995; his parents; two brothers, Johnel and Harvey; and one grandson, Steven Golberg.

He is survived by his sons, Olaf and wife, Florence, of Tempe, Ariz., and Nels and wife, Shirley, of St. Ansgar; daughter, Karen Cook and husband, Robert, of Charles City; grandchildren, Kathy Golberg, of San Francisco, Lisa Dockstader and husband, John, of St.Ansgar, Brent Golberg and wife, Karla, of Owatonna, Minn., and Wendy Patterson and husband, Chris, of St. Ansgar; many great-grandchildren, Zachary and Derick Helgeson, Alison Golberg, of Owatonna, Minn., and Garrett and Alexandra Patterson, of St. Ansgar; also one niece, nephews and cousins.

MARGARET R. AMBERG

HANLONTOWN - Margaret R. Amberg, 84, of Hanlontown, died Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) at Concord Care Center, Garner.

A memorial mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 N. Broadway, Manly, with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Manly.

Margaret was born Oct. 30, 1917, at Lake Mills, a daughter of Amos and Sarah (Fosnes) Lien. She married Edward M. Amberg on Jan. 22, 1938, at Webster City.

Mrs. Amberg worked at the Hanlontown Public Library for many years. She was involved as a volunteer in community and civic activities in Hanlontown, and in her church.

Margaret enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles, quilting, baking and her loon collection.

Her grandchildren were especially fond of her peanut butter balls. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage, as she loved lutefisk and lefse.

Margaret is survived by her three children and their spouses, Anthony and Sandy Amberg, of Dubuque, Diane and Ted Reisdorfer, of Adrian, Minn. and Connie and Roy Tesene, of Garner; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Sarah Catherine; one brother, Arnold Lien; and two sisters, Doris Nelson and Norma Hobart.

CLIFTON ALVIN BURMEISTER

AMES - Clifton Alvin Burmeister, 88, of Ames, died Nov. 8, 2001, at his home of heart failure.

His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Collegiate Presbyterian Church, 159 N. Sheldon in Ames, with Dr. Kent M. Organ and the Rev. Vicky Curtiss officiating. The body was cremated. His burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Clifton Alvin Burmeister was born in Mason City on March 11, 1913, the son of Alfred Edmund and Amelia Molly (Zittke) Burmeister.

He had lived in Ames since 1986. He lived in Mason City from 1913 to 1935, Woodward from 1935 to 1937, Clarion from 1937 to 1940, Evanston, Ill., from 1940 to 1941, Loraine, Ohio, and U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, Warrensburg, Ohio, from 1946 to 1952, Evanston, Ill., from 1952 to 1966, and Lake Forest, Ill., from 1966 to 1978.

He graduated from Mason City High School in 1929, and received a bachelor of arts degree from Carleton College in 1933, a master's degree from Northwestern in 1941 and a doctorate degree from the University of Kansas in 1953.

He occupied the John W. Beattie Chair of Music at Northwestern University for 26 years; taught music in public schools in Woodward, Clarion, and Loraine, Ohio; served as director of band and professor of music education at Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg, Mo.; and was director of music for School District 65, Evanston, Ill. He retired in 1978.

He married Mildred Lorraine Landsberg on June 7, 1937, in Britt. His memberships included the following: Masonic Lodge, 1935 to 1941; Rotarian 1937 to 1943; Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Ga., 1980 to 1986; president, North Central Division of the Music Educators National Conference; Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha and Phi Delta Kappa; Collegiate Presbyterian Church, where he was presently serving as interim choir director. He was an author, consultant and editor.

He was the recipient of the following: 1969 Steinway & Sons Steinway Award for outstanding contributions to the cause of music education; Illinois Music Educators Distinguished Service Award; Northwestern Alumni Merit Award 1996; Northwestern's School of Music's Legends in Teaching Award; Who's Who in America from 1962 to 1982 and Leaders in American Education.

He is survived by his daughter, Judith (Larry) Dew, of Clarksville, Mo. and Granite City, Ill.; one son, Robert Burmeister, of Mercer Island, Wash.; two granddaughters; and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1997.

There will be no visitation.

AL LEASE

NORTHWOOD - Al Lease, 83, of Northwood, formerly of Storm Lake, died suddenly on Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) at his home at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Maple Court, in Northwood.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with Pastor Steven Schulz officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors by Amvets Post No. 66 of Storm Lake.

Alva Leonard Lease was born Jan. 14, 1918, on a farm near Lawton, the son of Leonard and Edith Finna Lease. He moved to Cherokee at a young age and received his education in the public schools, graduating from Wilson High School in Cherokee in 1938.

Al was married to Helen Margurite Hanson on June 23, 1940, at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Cherokee.

He was employed at Knipes Shoe Store for four years until entering the service on Dec. 21, 1941.

He served in the United States Army Air Force from 1942-1944 as a member of the 8th Air Force, 305th bomb group, 365th squadron, out of Chelveston, England. He was on a combat crew as a flight engineer and top-turret gunner on a B-17, completing 34 missions over Europe.

Upon returning from the war the couple moved to Storm Lake in 1946, where Al was employed at Kallmer Sales until 1966. After the business was sold he was employed at Merrill Manufacturing Co. from 1967 until retiring in1973.

Al and Helen moved to Northwood in July 2001 to be closer to their children.

Al was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church of Storm Lake. He will be remembered as a man of high integrity, who served as a wonderful role model as husband and father.

He is survived by a son, Craig and his wife, Phyllis, of Northwood: a daughter, Karen Braesch and her husband, Tom, of Prior Lake, Minn.; five grandsons, Travis and Anne Marie Lease, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Brian and Becky Lease, of La Crosse, Wis., Matthew and Melissa Braesch, of Sheboygan, Wis., Jason and Tracy Braesch, of Prior Lake, Minn., and Jeff and Joan Braesch, of Burnsville, Minn.

Also surviving are three great-granddaughters, Arianna Kersten and Alexis and Haley Braesch; a sister-in-law, Lillian Johnson, of Storm Lake; a brother-in-law, Gunner Hanson, of Morris, Minn.; and other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen, on Oct. 17, 2001; a brother, Glen; and by a nephew Stephen.

LATIMER - Ella Dohrmann, 103, died Friday (Nov. 23, 2001) at the Hampton Health Care Center.

Ella (Uilk) Dohrmann was born on Dec. 4, 1897, at Hartwick, Minn., the daughter of Lammert and Harmke (Immermann) Uilk. Her family spent time in Hartwick and Reinbeck before moving to a farm in Hamilton Township near Coulter. It was here that Ella helped her parents on the farm.

On Feb. 15, 1923, Ella was united in marriage with Otto Dohrmann at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Latimer. The couple farmed until 1958, when they moved into Latimer. Ella remained in her home until entering the Hampton Health Care Center in December 1996.

Ella spent much time tending to her home and her five children. She enjoyed gardening and was an excellent baker, making chocolate chip cookies, bread and buns for her family. Ella even cooked at the Latimer Parochial School, of which she was very proud. She also liked to sew and crochet. Ella was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, and she was a charter member of the Ladies Missionary Society.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Latimer Parochial School, 404 West Main Street, in Latimer.

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Penny Arlene Thomas, 29, formerly of Clear Lake and a two-year resident of Olympia, Wash., passed away Saturday (Nov. 24, 2001) at St. Peter Hospital.

Her funeral will be held Tuesday at Chehalis Chapel of the Brown Mortuary, Chehalis, Wash., with Pastor Tony Cloud officiating. Interment will be at the Claquato Cemetery in Chehalis.

Penny was born on July 29, 1972, in Iowa City to Clair and Sharon (White) Clay Jr. She was raised in northern Iowa, settling in Clear Lake for 14 years. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1990. She attended Hamilton Business School for a year and worked with the handicapped as a teacher's aide for Opportunity Village. Penny moved to Olympia, Wash., with her daughter, Shelby, in 1999.

Penny enjoyed writing poetry, working with computers, collecting teddy bears, traveling and cross stitching.

In addition to her daughter, Shelby, of Olympia, Penny is survived by her mother, Sharon Clay of Centralia, Wash.; her father, Clair Clay Jr. of Charles City; her sister, Sheryl Pratt of Olympia; her brother, David Clay of Garner; and two nieces and three nephews.

BRITT - John McMahon, 98, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) at Westview Care Center, Britt.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, with Fr. Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Corwith.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt. A scriptural wake service will begin at 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30.

He was born April 7, 1903, in Sexton, to John and Esther McMahon. He received his education there and farmed the homestead after his father passed away.

John met and married Stasia O'Brien. They had four children, Emmett, James, Leo and Marie.

During their 50 years of marriage they lived on farms near Wesley, Hutchins, Britt and Corwith. After Stasia passed away, he married Anne Sweeney. They resided in Britt.

John loved farming. As well as working the land, he raised lots of livestock. He took pride in raising prime beef cattle and lambs. He was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his three children, Emmett and wife, Evelyn, of Clearwater, Fla., Jim and wife, Nancy, of Huntsville, Ala., and Marie Egolf of Concord, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Jana, Kristi, Susan, John Joseph, Thomas, Jennifer, Sarah and John David; and nine great-grandchildren. Also living are three nephews, Charles and Donald Lickteig of Algona and Tim; four nieces, Joan Elbert of Algona, Mary Lickteig of Omaha, Neb., and Sister Joan Lickteig and Sister Mary Clement of Dubuque. John was preceded in death by his first wife, Stasia; his son, Leo; grandson, Mark; his wife, Anne Sweeney; his parents; three brothers, Francis, Luke and Charles; and three sisters, Mary, Rose and Louise. He saw many changes during his lifetime. He enriched the lives of many people and will be missed by those who loved him.

He was active in baseball, football, soccer (where he was a member of the North Iowa Soccer Club), enjoyed rollerblading, skate boarding, drawing, playing and wrestling with his brother, Austin.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Jeff and Cheryl Thompson of Mason City; a brother, Austin, at home; a "sister at heart," Bria Keeling of Mason City; grandparents, Tom and Sharon Faught of Mason City, Jimmy and Zita Klunder of North Platte, Neb., and Donald Hutzell and Mary Reich of Marble Rock; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Cody was preceded in death by his grandmother, Marlys Hutzell, and all of his great grandparents.

MARGARET SEDGWICK

LAKE MILLS - Margaret Sedgwick, 83, passed away Wednesday (Nov. 21, 2001) at her daughter's home in Rochester, Minn.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra and the Rev. Kevin Mackey officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Cemetery, Lake Mills.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 209 N. Washington, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour before the service at the church Monday.

Margaret Dorothy Sedgwick was born Aug. 23, 1918, in King Township, Winnebago County, the daughter of Severin and Marie (Olson) Norvet. She was baptized at West Prairie Lutheran Church, Thompson, and confirmed at North Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Lanesboro, Minn.

Margaret graduated from St. Charles High School, St. Charles, Minn., in 1937, and attended Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn.

In 1939 she went to work as a nurse for her grandparents at the Winnebago County Home, Lake Mills. There she met Fred Sedgwick and they were united in marriage on Sept. 2, 1943, at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, where she remained a member.

Together they managed the Winnebago County Home until Fred's death in 1969. Margaret then worked for Dr. S. M. Haugland in Lake Mills until she joined Bakers Life and Casualty. She worked as an independent agent for Bankers Life and Casualty until 1999.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Mary and her husband, Paul Charlson, of Rochester, Minn.; three grandchildren, Laura and her husband, David Frazier, of Apple Valley, Minn., Sara Charlson of Olathe, Kan, and Michael Charlson of Alanta, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Luke and William Frazier of Apple Valley; one sister, Helen Small of Rochester; one brother, Dean and his wife, Beverly Norvet, of St. Charles, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred; a son in infancy; one brother, Sylvan Norvet; and one nephew, Robert Small.
