BERNIECE G. MAHLER

MASON CITY - Graveside memorial services for Berniece G. Mahler will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Adas Israel Section of Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City. There will be a gathering immediately after at Adas Israel Synagogue, 620 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City.

Berniece Mahler, 88, of Mason City, died on July 12, 2000, at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

MAUDE E. KINGERY

GREENE - The funeral for Maude E. Kingery, 85, of 411 N. Bluff in Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of the Brethren in Greene, with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, with a public scripture service at 7:30 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

Maude Evelyn Keith was born April 22, 1916, in rural Scott Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Claude and Josie (Garber) Keith, and died Wednesday (Nov. 14, 2001) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

She received her education at the Scott Township No. 9 country school near Marble Rock. On Sept. 5, 1936, she was united in marriage to Vern Kingery in Minneapolis, Minn. They began farming west of Marble Rock, where they remained until 1948, when they began farming west of Greene. In 1959 they farmed west of Marble Rock until their retirement in 1977, when they moved into Greene.

Maude will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother who helped with the day-to-day chores on the farm. She provided for her family through gardening, canning, sewing and cooking.

She will be remembered for her faithful dedication to her church as a Deaconess of the church, singing duets with her husband for church services, teaching Sunday school and being a member of the Women's Fellowship. Her interests included crocheting, embroidery work and reading books.

Those thankful for having shared her life include her children, Evelyn Fish, of Council Bluffs, Betty Kingery and Janice Ackart, both of Greene, and Elvin and his wife, Dorothy, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; son-in-law, Bill Bell, of Floyd; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Alice Kingery, of Greene, and Viola Keith of Marble Rock.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern, on March 7, 1984; daughter, Lois Bell in 1990; grandson, Stephen Fish, in 1991; granddaughter, Susan Fish, in 1992; two sons-in-law, Leo Fish, in 1970 and Marvin Nelson, in 1986; her parents; and three brothers, Alton, Lloyd and Roy Keith.

ASTA OPDAHL

LAKE MILLS - The funeral for Asta Opdahl, 87, of Lake Mills, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville, with the Rev. Randy Baldwin officiating. Burial will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Scarville.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and one hour before services at the church.

Asta Opdahl died on Wednesday (Nov. 14, 2001) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Asta Marie Opdahl was born on Feb. 19, 1914, the daughter of Reinard and Amanda Rodberg Jacobson, in Winnebago County. Asta attended Scarville public school and graduated from Northwood High School in 1932.

On Nov. 15, 1933, she was united in marriage to Harry Opdahl. After their marriage they moved to Polk County, Minn., where they farmed for several years. In 1939 they returned to the Scarville area, where they farmed until retirement. Asta lived on the farm until entering the Lake Mills Care Center in 1991, where she resided until her death on Nov. 14, 2001.

She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, circles, Ladies Aid, quilting and Sunday school. She was employed by the Lake Mills Care Center for several years, Scarville Café, and sold Avon. In addition to her family, special interests included the Scarville Booster's Club, quilting, crocheting, knitting and embroidering.

Asta is survived by her daughter, Dorothy (Gene) Evans, of Clear Lake; sons, Robert (Gail) Opdahl, of Grass Valley, Calif., Harold (Marcia) Opdahl, of Rochester, Minn., and David Opdahl, of Corvallis, Ore.; 12 grandchildren, Lynn (Steve) Opp, William Kortz, Mark Evans, Jodi Evans, Deanne (Michael O'Sullivan) Opdahl, Chris Opdahl, Greg Opdahl, Aric Opdahl, Amy (Mitch) Edwards, Darin (Laura) Opdahl, Jamie Opdahl and Jennifer Opdahl; and eight great-grandchildren.

Asta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry; daughter, Helen Kortz; son, Paul; grandson, Steven Evans; and sisters, Alice Olson and Alma Ecklund.

LULU B. SANDELL

THOMPSON - Lulu B. Sandell, of Thompson, died Wednesday morning (Nov. 14, 2001) at the age of 93.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson, with the Rev. Ted Gullixson officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Winter Funeral Home in Thompson.

Lulu B. Sandell, daughter of Peter and Mary (Ashpole) DeVries, was born Sept. 16, 1908, at Forest City. She was married to Clarence Torgeson in 1925. This union was blessed with a daughter, Patricia. Clarence passed away in 1961.

On Dec. 16, 1967, she was united in marriage to Reuben Sandell at Garner. Together they made their home in the Thompson area. She worked at the grocery store in Thompson for many years.

She also was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson.

She is survived by her husband, Reuben, of Thompson; her daughter, Patricia Dahlen, of Forest City; four grandchildren, Lynn Dirks, of Burnsville, Minn., Kermit Dahlen and his wife, Mari, of Hinton, Becky Hagen and her husband, Ron, of Joice and Patrick Dahlen and his wife, Eileen, of Urbandale; a grandson-in-law, Larry Thorson, of La Crosse, Wis.; nine great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Dirks, Amy Gosz, David Thorson, Brian Hagen, Allison Hagen, Kristopher Dahlen, Eric Goranson, Savannah Dahlen and Nicholas Dahlen; two sisters-in-law, Mary DeVries, of Rockford, Ill., and Evelyn Austin, of Forest City; and by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Clarence; son-in-law, Ralph Dahlen; and granddaughter, Klareese Dahlen Thorson.

PHILIP KOENIGS

STACYVILLE - Philip Koenigs, 92, of Stacyville, died on Wednesday (Nov. 14, 2001) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meyer.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Visitation Catholic Church, with a 3 p.m. rosary and an 8 p.m. prayer service.

Philip was born on March 8, 1909, in Meyer, the son of Peter C. and Anna (Kloeckner) Koenigs. He married Rosina Bissen on May 24, 1939, in Johnsburg, Minn. He farmed in the Johnsburg and Meyer areas until 1976, when they moved to Stacyville.

Philip loved horses, milk cows and Case farm equipment. After retiring Philip liked cracking walnuts and going to sale barns.

He was a member of Visitation Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and six sisters.

Philip is survived by his wife, Rosina, of Stacyville; two sons, David and his wife, Miriam Koenigs, of Marshalltown, and Charles and his wife, Diane Koenigs, of Des Moines; one daughter, Mary Marius and her husband, Julio, of Mitchellville, Md.; six grandchildren, Michael Koenigs, Mark Koenigs, Jon Koenigs, Jachel Koenigs Kinder, Javier Marius and Mariella Marius; one great-grandson, Samuel Kinder; and one brother, Tom Koenigs, of Adams, Minn.

EMMA A. DUNNING

NORTHWOOD - Emma A. Dunning, 80, of Northwood, formerly of Rushmore, died Wednesday (Nov. 14, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

She was born Nov. 24, 1920, south of Rushmore, to John and Martha (Heronemus) Aggen. She attended country school in Lyon County, Iowa, and later in rural Nobles County, Minn.

Emma was united in marriage to James Wayne Dunning on Feb. 20, 1940, in rural Rushmore. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Rushmore area. They retired in 1975, and the couple moved from the family farm into Rushmore in 1985.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rushmore, where she played the organ for 40 years. Emma was also a member of the Church Circle and Women's Association. She taught Sunday school for several years. She was also a 4-H Leader.

Emma is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Carolyn Dunning, of Eau Claire, Wis.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia Roos, Pearl, Miss., Phyllis and Craig Lease, of Northwood, and Janet and Stan Lambert, of Huntley, Mont.; nine grandchildren, Greg (Jean) Dunning, Lisa Dunning, Kevin Roos, Michelle Roos, Stephanie (Will) Gangwer, Travis (Ann Marie) Lease, Brian (Becky) Lease, Nicholas (Mary) Lambert and Joshua Lambert; two stepgrandchildren, Christine (Yanni) Alexakis and Kevin Wilson; five great-grandchildren, Maris and Matthew Dunning, Layton Lambert, Tyler Gangwer and Maya Alexakis; brother, Harry (Beverly) Aggen, Rushmore; and a sister, Mildred (William) Moerke, of Beaver Creek.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne, on March 8, 1997; and an infant brother, Arnold Aggen.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Rushmore, with the Rev. Charles Reid officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery in Rushmore.

BELMOND - Edna Alma Eccles, 89, most recently a resident of Portland, Ore., formerly of the Belmond area, died Thursday (Nov. 15, 2001) at her granddaughter Diane's home in Portland.

ROGER D. LYNG

LAKE MILLS - Roger D. Lyng, 75, of Bowie, Md., formerly of Lake Mills, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, Md.

Services were held at the All Saints Lutheran Church, Bowie, Md., with the Rev. Richard Dowhower officiating.

A memorial service and interment will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Lake Mills at Salem Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating.

Roger was born on Dec. 12, 1925, in Albert Lea, Minn., and raised in Lake Mills. He graduated from LMHS in 1943. Enlisting at 17 after graduation from high school, he served in the Army Air Corp from 1943-1945. During that time he was in the Air Cadet Program at the University of Kansas and Michigan State.

After the war ended, he received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Colorado, and did post-graduate work in economics. He also did post-graduate work in public administration from the University of Southern California.

In 1951 he married Donna Tande, a vocal music teacher in the Lake Mills Public School. Roger joined the Civil Service Commission in 1952, serving the federal government until he retired in 1981. During that time, he worked in personnel management in Denver, Colo., Los Alamos and Albuquerque, N.M., and Washington, D.C. After retirement, Roger worked as a consultant and traveled extensively with his wife, Donna.

Roger was always active in the church, serving in many official positions. He was an active member and officer in the Sons of Norway at both the Baltimore Lodge and Third District level, and the Baltimore Chapter of the Norwegian/American Club. He is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Philip Lyng, M.D and his wife, Kathy, Susan Lyng Rappa and Eric Lyng; his grandchildren, Kristen, Erin, Jonathan, Melissa, Kelly and Amy Lyng, and Andrew and Adam Rappa; and his brother, David and his wife, Sally Lyng.

He will be greatly missed by his family, who loved him dearly, and the many friends whose lives he touched.

GARNER - Mervin "Buzz" Groesbeck, 82, of Garner, died Thursday (Nov. 15, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

DOROTHY FRANCES STEECE

PERRY - Dorothy Frances Steece, daughter of George Henry Gitz and Myretta Larrison Gitz, was born July 20, 1916, in Kansas City, Mo., and died on Wednesday (Nov. 14, 2001) at the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry, at the age of 85 years, 3 months, and 24 days.

Her funeral will be held at 3 p.m. today at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry, with burial in Violet Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer's Association, c/o Hastings Funeral Home in Perry.

Dorothy grew up in St. Joseph, Mo., and later in Mason City, where she graduated from Mason City High School.

On Aug. 20, 1939, Dorothy was united in marriage to Parke J. Steece and they became parents of daughter, Jackie, and son, Jay. Dorothy made her home in Mason City, while Parke served with the United States Navy.

After his return, Parke began working for the Gibbs-Cook Equipment Co. During the next year, Parke was transferred to Des Moines. In 1950, Parke bought the Perry Ready Mix Co. and the family moved to Perry. After nearly 20 years, Parke sold the company and began working at the Oscar Mayer Meat Processing Plant in Perry and later for the City of Perry for the parks department and as a building inspector.

During those years, Dorothy worked as an insurance clerk at the Dallas County Hospital in Perry.

Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Perry Golf and Country Club, and was a 50-year member of the Alpha Phi Masters of Beta Sigma Phi.

She loved to play bridge and was a member of a local bridge club. Dorothy enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Due to her failing health, she entered the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in June 2001.

Preceding Dorothy in death were her parents; husband, Parke, on Oct. 24, 2001; sister, Lucille Olson; and brother, Dr. George Gitz.

Survivors include one son, Jay Steece and his friend, Kelly Meier, of Bouton; one daughter, Jackie Yakel and her friend, Terry Wagner, of Perry; five grandchildren, Alysha DeHoet and her husband, Casey, Halley Steece, Kiarha Steece, Bryan Yakel and his wife, Michelle, and Jennifer Yakel; five great-gandchildren, Cole and Cayla DeHoet, Katlynne, Mackenzie and Kylee Yakel; sister-in-law, Muriel Gitz, of Clarion; brother-in-law, Marion Olson, of San Antonio, Texas; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

JACOB H. 'JAKE' ALLEN

CHAPIN - Jacob H. "Jake" Allen died Wednesday (Nov. 14, 2001) at Franklin General Hospital following a short bout with cancer.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Salem United Methodist Church in Chapin, with the Rev. Remigio P. Panlaqui officiating. Interment will follow in Wayside Cemetery in Chapin.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf-Grarup Funeral Home in Sheffield.

Jake Allen was born Jan. 7, 1928, in Wyoming, the son of Austin T. and Emma (Hershberger) Allen. He graduated from Monmouth High School in 1945. He farmed with his father on the family farm.

On Aug. 8, 1948, Jake was united in marriage with Letha Patheram in Oxford Junction. On March 1, 1950, they moved to a farm north of Chapin, where they have lived and farmed ever since. It was here that Jake milked Holstein cows for 50 years.

Jake was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Chapin. He was also a member of the Mid-America Dairy Association.

Jake enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. In his spare time he worked with his ponies and, when time allowed, would drive his team.

Jake is survived by his wife, Letha, of Chapin; son, Russell (Molly) Allen, of rural Sheffield; daughter, Barbara Hanig, of Dougherty; grandchildren, Jed and Alicia Allen, of rural Sheffield, and Ross and Blair Hanig, of Dougherty; brother, Stanley (Erma) Allen, of Olin; sister, Verna Mais, of Anamosa; sister-in-law, Helma Allen, of Washington, Iowa; brother-in-law, Ronald Davis, of Monticello; and several nieces and nephews.

LAWRENCE L. COOPER

MANLY - Lawrence L. Cooper, 63, of 3942 Raven Ave., Manly, died Wednesday (Nov. 14, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, surrounded by his family.

His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly, with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Interment will follow at the Manly Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 until 6 p.m. on Sunday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring Street in Manly.

Memorials may be directed to the Lawrence L. Cooper Memorial Fund at 3942 Raven Ave., Manly, Iowa 50456.

Lawrence was born April 17, 1938, in Mason City, the son of Glennys and Velma (Fitch) Cooper. He graduated from Manly High School in 1956 and drove bus for the school while he attended.

Lawrence lived on his family farm northeast of Manly all his life. Over the years he worked at several businesses, including the Sugar Beet, L.R. Falk Construction in St. Ansgar, and as a welder for David Manufacturing.

He also farmed, but primarily Lawrence was a truck driver who drove for Mitchell Transport, McDonalds and Yohn Ready Mix over many years. Most recently he worked at Winnebago Industries and Cycle Sat, before taking early retirement in 1996.

Lawrence enjoyed farming, trucking and planes. He owned his own plane and was a former member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.

Lawrence is survived by his son, Doug Cooper and Tracie, of Manly; his daughter, Lori Cooper and Mike, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Shelly Drilin of Bjugen, Norway, Brandie, and Jessie Cooper of Manly, and Lacy and Jacob Cooper of Mason City; a special friend, Sharon Hrubetz of Mason City; and several other relatives and friends.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

JAMES PETER PREFTAKES

MASON CITY - James Peter Preftakes, 77, of 300 Second St. N.E., died Tuesday (Nov. 13, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 Second St. S.W. with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with a flag folding ceremony and taps provided by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, with a Trisagion service at 6 p.m.

James Peter Preftakes was born Aug. 7, 1924, in Albert Lea, Minn., the son of Peter and Harriett (Zubulake) Preftakes. The family moved to Hampton in 1936, then to Mason City in 1939. Jim graduated from Mason City High School in 1942.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served during the Normandy Invasion. He was discharged in 1945.

Jim married Tassie Striggles on May 1, 1949, in Des Moines. Jim was a long-time employee of the Hanford Inn and Sheraton Motor Inn, where he served in several capacities, including chef, catering manager and assistant manager.

Jim was a member of the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, enjoyed golf, sports and wintering in South Padre Island, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Tassie (Dolly) Preftakes, of Mason City; daughter, Pamela P. Wingrod and her husband, Meyer, of Havertown, Pa.; son, Nicholas J. Preftakes and his wife, Renee, of Oklahoma City; brother, Alex Preftakes and his wife, Phyliss, of Mason City; his brother-in-law, Henry Mataloni, of Mason City; nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Demetra (Tula) Mataloni; and nephew, Michael Preftakes.

ELMORE, Minn. - Viola M. (Betels) Jahnke, 84, of Elmore, formerly of Forest City, died Thursday (Nov. 15, 2001) in Fairmont, Minn.

GARNER - Mervin "Buzz" Groesbeck, 82, of Garner, died Thursday (Nov. 15, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Klemme with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Interment will be in Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme, with military rites conducted by the Klemme Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

MARIE R. LEAKE

MASON CITY - Marie R. Leake, 81, 2311 North Carolina, died Thursday (Nov. 15, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will be held in Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held one hour before service time at the funeral home.

Marie was born in Dows on Oct. 12, 1920, the daughter of Oscar Paul and Margaret (Ross) Hackbarth. She spent the first nine years of her childhood in Dows until 1929, when she moved to Brownsdale, Minn. In 1938 she graduated from the Austin School District in Minnesota. In 1940 she moved to Chicago, where she lived during WWII, and in 1946 moved to Mason City.

On March 20, 1948, Marie Hackbarth was united in marriage to Donald Leake at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Marie enjoyed sitting out on her porch and using oils to paint the beautiful nature that surrounded their house. In her later years so enjoyed dining at the Royal Fork.

Marie will be remembered as a loving wife to Donald Leake, of Mason City; mother of Paul Donald Leake of Mason City; grandmother of three, Steven Leake of Manly, Bryon Leake of Austin, Minn., and Erin Leake of Manly; an aunt of four; a brother-in-law of Brooke Frase.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Margaret Hackbarth; and one sister, Margaret L. Frase.

EDNA ALMA ECCLES

BELMOND - Edna Alma Eccles, 89, a longtime resident of the Belmond area, most recently of Portland, Ore., died Wednesday (Nov. 14, 2001) in Portland, Ore.

Memorial services will be held in the spring of 2002 in Belmond, on a date yet to be determined by the family.

CLEAR LAKE - Marilou Francis Friedrichs, 70, of 408 S. 9th St., Clear Lake, died Friday (Nov. 16, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.

MERVIN "BUZZ" GROESBECK

GARNER - Mervin "Buzz" Groesbeck, 82, of Garner died Thursday (Nov. 15, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Klemme, with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Interment will be in Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme, with military rites by the Klemme Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner and one hour before services at the church.

Mervin "Buzz" Burton Groesbeck, the son of Clarence H. and Minnie (Blocker) Groesbeck, was born Jan. 17, 1919, on a farm southeast of Garner in Ell Township in Hancock County. Buzz attended the rural schools of Ell Township and Garner High School. After school, he helped his father on the farm.

On May 6, 1941, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served his country during WW II as a sergeant in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaigns. Following his discharge on July 12, 1945, he returned home and continued to farm.

On June 27, 1946, he married Doris V. Pringnitz at the Liberty Methodist Church west of Klemme. They made their home east of Klemme, where they farmed and raised their family. In 1983, they retired from farming and moved to Garner. Buzz enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed driving school bus for five years, fishing, woodworking and his morning coffee with his friends.

He was a baptized member of the United Methodist Church in Klemme. He was also a member of the Garner V.F.W., Klemme American Legion, Farm Bureau and was a former township chairman.

Buzz is survived by his wife, Doris, of Garner; three children, Berdean Dolan and husband, Ron, of West Des Moines, Myrna Eisenlauer and husband, Bill, of Pleasant Hill and Bradley Groesbeck and wife, Linda, of Garner; a foster daughter, Alicia McGrew and husband, Paul, of Marshalltown; fifteen grandchildren, Ronnie E. Dolan and wife, Tracy, Renee and Matt Dolan, Robert, Anna, John and Dillon Eisenlauer, Jason and Amy Albers and Joshua, Ariane, Nathan, Anthony, Hannah and Serena McGrew; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Arlene Mullin and husband, Armour, of Ames and Maxine Skoda and husband, Adrian, of New Hampton; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Groesbeck of Sheffield and Judy Harp of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda, in 1969; his father, Clarence, in 1983; his mother, Minnie, in 1936; his step-mother, Pauline, in 1990; and three brothers, Ronald, in 1991, Eugene, in 1991 and Lowell, in 1979.

CLEAR LAKE - Marilou Francis Friedrichs, 70, of 408 S. Ninth St., Clear Lake, died Friday (Nov. 16, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Marilou was born July 29, 1931, in Ionia, the daughter of John and Violet (Nichols) Klassen. She graduated from Rudd High School, Rudd, Iowa.

Marilou married Lee Friedrichs on Aug. 12, 1950, in the Immaculate Catholic Church, Elma. They moved to Clear Lake in 1962, where they owned and operated the Ford dealership until 1970 and later owned and operated the Clear Lake Appliance until their retirement. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake.

Marilou is survived by her daughter, Sandy Paulson and her fiancé, Steve Murphy, of West Branch; two sons, Dr. Robert Friedrichs and his wife, Debby, of Mason City, and Scott Friedrichs, of Minneapolis, Minn.; three grandchildren, Kristin Paulson, of West Branch, Jessica Friedrichs, of Cedar Falls, and Joe Friedrichs, of Missoula, Mont.; one sister, Evelyn Gabby, of Osage; and three brothers, Jerry Klassen and his wife, Vi, of Cherry Valley, Ill., Bob Klassen and his wife, Betty, of Ventura, and Jack Klassen and his wife, Greta, of Alborne, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and infant son.

MASON CITY - Natalie Miller, 79, of 1600 Royal Circle, died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at the USA Healthcare, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Internment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Natalie was born on July 22, 1922, the daughter of Esther (Perkins) and Clarence Herr in Mason City. She received her high school education from the Mason City School District and then graduated from LaJames.

On April 11, 1942, she was united in marriage to Grant Miller. Natalie owned her own beauty shop for five years and then worked for the Credit Bureau for 16 years. She retired in 1985.

Natalie is survived by one nephew, Gerold Wells, of Mason City; one grandson, Todd Miller and his wife, Pam and their child, Chase.

Natalie is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Grant, two sons, Richard and Robert, and two sisters.

MASON CITY - Ruth E. Statser, 93, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2001) at the Heritage Care Center.

Her funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Richard "Rick" Eichenlaub of First Christian Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Ruth E. Statser was born Aug. 13, 1908, in Mitchell County, Iowa, the daughter of Richard and Katz (Harrison) Marson. When she was a small child, the family moved to an acreage near Charles City. She attended school in Charles City. In 1925, she moved to Mason City.

On Jan. 1, 1929, she was united in marriage to Harold G. Statser in a ceremony in Mason City.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and a former member of the Moose Lodge.

Ruth enjoyed her time spent traveling with friends, dancing, and playing an occasional card game.

Those left to cherish her memory include son, Jack L. Statser and his wife, Venita, of Bettendorf; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Dean Statzer and his wife, Merle, of Mason City; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Earl (Lilian) Statser of Mason City; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Dorothy Hepperly and her husband, Gary, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on Feb. 11, 1997, 10 brothers and four sisters.

LaVerne John "L.J." Voldahl was born March 15, 1928, in rural Bricelyn, Minn., the son of Selmer and Laura (Vigdal) Voldahl. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith.

He attended school and graduated from Bricelyn High School in 1946.

He farmed and owned his own drainage contracting business from 1951-2001.

He was united in marriage to Margaret Fuchs on Aug. 16, 1947. To this marriage two children were born, Larry and Dennis.

On Sept. 16, 1967, he was united in marriage to Kristine Sweasey. To this marriage his daughter, Gail, was born.

On Feb. 16 1979, L. J. was united in marriage to Patricia K. Huso Hanna.

L. J. enjoyed traveling, motorcycling, air shows, reading, horses, and spending time with his family and many friends. He was a member of the Land Improvement Contractors of America (LICA).

L. J. passed away Sunday (Nov. 18, 2001) at his home.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Leland; two sons, Larry and his wife, Emily, of Lake Mills, and Dennis, of Lake Mills; one daughter, Gail Rickeman, of Itasca, Texas; two stepsons, Kyle Hanna and his wife, Brenda, of Gulfport, Miss., and Kent Hanna and his wife, RaChael, of Joice; one stepdaughter, Kaylene Erdahl and her husband, Ramon, of Lake Mills; six grandchildren, Julie Bigler and her husband, Kyle, of Mason City, Stephanie Colby and her husband, Tim, of West Des Moines, Bill Voldahl, of Clear Lake, Jonathon Voldahl, of Lake Mills, Daniel Voldahl, of Lake Mills, and Taylor Rickeman, of Itasca, Texas; 10 step-grandchildren, Christopher, Tanya, Matthew, Dusty and Lacey, of Gulfport, Miss., Clark, Toni, Samuel and Hallie Erdahl, of Lake Mills, and Trevor Hanna, of Joice; one great-granddaughter, Taylor, of Mason City; one step-great-granddaughter, Cheyenne, of Michigan; four brothers-in-law, Harry Kline, David Huso and his wife, Verah, Steven Huso and his wife, Jeorgene, and Scott Huso and his wife, Donna; one sister-in-law, Sharon Penrod and her husband, Bill; his step-mother-in-law, Myrtle Huso; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
