RONALD L. JERGENSON

CLARION - Ronald L. Jergenson, 66, of Clarion, died Saturday (Nov. 10, 2001) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday at the Willim Funeral Home, 602 N. Main St., Clarion, with the Rev. Curt Miner officiating. Burial will take place in the Glennwood Cemetery in Goldfield.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home and one hour before the service on Monday.

Ronald LeRoy Jergenson, the son of Sam and Helen (Carter) Jergenson, was born May 5, 1935, in Florence, Iowa, in Wright County. Ron grew up in the Clarion and Goldfield area where he attended country schools and Clarion High School. He was baptized and confirmed in Eagle Grove.

After high school Ron began working for Hagie Manufacturing in Clarion at the age of 19. He worked as a machinist at Hagie until his retirement.

Ronald was united in marriage to Gladys Jean Sorenson on April 12, 1959, in Clarion. They later divorced.

Ron was an outdoorsman. Being outside was his passion. Ron enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. He was a talented woodworker and machinist. Ron enjoyed caring for his cat "Shorty". He strived for perfection in everything he did. Ron is fondly remembered by his children as the "Sidewalk Supervisor".

He is survived by two daughters, Wendy Conley and her husband, Leland of Webster City, and Lanette Watts and her husband, Wayne of Clarion; two sons, Steve and his wife, Juanita of Clear Lake, and Jeff of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren, Ashley, Angela, Olivia, Eric, Amanda, Alayna, and Tim; two sisters, Mardell Lindstrom of Phoenix, Ariz., and Bonnie Hill and her husband, Kenny of Grundy Center; four brothers, Richard and his wife, Norma of Clarion, Dennis and his wife, Kathy of Humboldt, John and his wife, Sue of St. Louis, Mo., and Randy of Omaha, Neb; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Wallace (Pee Wee) Lindstrom.

DAVID E. EVANS

MASON CITY - David E. Evans, 51, of 536 7th St. S.E., died Saturday (November 10, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St NE, Mason City, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral chapel. Memorials may be given to the David E. Evans memorial fund.

David E. Evans was born March 25, 1950, at Mason City, a son of Darrell L. and Mildred (Ivonavitch) Evans. On Jan. 19, 1985, he was united in marriage to Joan K. Redeker at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Mason City. He attended Mason City schools, and was a 1968 graduate of Mason City High School.

Dave worked at the former Can-Tex Industries, Mason City for 10 years. For the past 23 years he has been employed at Curries Manufacturing.

Dave especially loved to golf and fish. He was also an avid bowler. His accomplishments in bowling include; a perfect 300 game, being named Mason City Men's Bowling Association Bowler of the Year, and becoming inducted into the Mason City Men's Bowling Association Hall of Fame.

In addition to the Mason City Men's Bowling Association, Dave was a member of the Manly Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Evans of Mason City; his mother, Mildred Evans of Mason City; two sons, Andrew Evans and Jimmy Redeker, Jr. and his wife Mindy of Mason City; two grandchildren, Austin and Alexis Redeker of Mason City; a brother, Mike Evans of Mason City; a sister, Lori Peterson and her husband Justin of Rudd; nieces and nephews, Missy, Kyle, Jason, Ryan, and Rachel Evans and Stephanie and Thomas Peterson; two aunts; and three uncles.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Darrell in 1977; a sister, Terry Renee Evans; three aunts and three uncles.

NEIL THOMAS BOONSTRA

CLEAR LAKE - Neil Thomas Boonstra, 18, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Nov.8, 2001) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 North Delaware Ave., Mason City, with Reverend Daird Korth officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 West, Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake, and one hour before the service on Monday at the church.

Neil Thomas Boonstra was born on Nov. 3, 1983, in Mason City, the son of Thomas and Lori (McMenimen) Boonstra. He attended and received his education in the Clear Lake School system and October of this year had received his GED.

Neil loved music, playing his guitar, computers, hanging out with his friends, shopping for clothes, going to coffee houses and drinking espressos, and enjoying his dog Wiggy.

He was a member of the YMCA in Mason City.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Lori McMenimen of Clear Lake; a brother, Max Boonstra of Clear Lake; his grandfather, Russell McMenimen of Salome, Ariz.; his grandmother, Ann Boonstra of Mason City; a very special aunt, Peggy Boonstra of Mason City; aunt, Doreen Pearsall of Danville, Calif.; uncles, Michael McMenimen and his wife Becky of Apache Junction, Ariz., Doug McMenimen and his wife Wuana of McAllen, Texas, and Ronald McMenimen and his wife Lauren of Tempe, Ariz.; numerous cousins, as well as other relatives and friends.

His father, Thomas Boonstra; maternal grandmother, Shirley McMenimen, and paternal grandfather, Harry Boonstra, preceded him in death.

GLADYS BROGAN

BRITT - Gladys Brogan, 72, of Britt, died Sunday (Oct. 28, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Her memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, in the Forum Room at Opportunity Village in Clear Lake with the Rev. Judy Brutz officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

MAURICE E. SWAN

BRITT - Maurice E. Swan, 89, of Britt died Thursday (Nov. 1, 2001) at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

His memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Britt with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church. Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt is in charge of arrangements.

Maurice E. Swan, the son of Walter and Viola (Swan) Swan, was born July 27, 1912, at Morning Sun, Iowa. He moved with his family to the Britt area when he was five years old. He attended school in Britt and played football and basketball in high school, graduating in 1932.

On Jan. 1, 1937, he was united in marriage to Vera Thornbury at Kanawha. Maurice drove a tank wagon for Standard Oil Company for more than 20 years. After retiring in 1958, he realized his life dream of farming. Maurice also drove school bus and was a substitute rural mail carrier.

He enjoyed working outside, golfing, watching sports, spending time with children, and supporting local high school events. He was an active member of the Britt Congregational Church.

Maurice is survived by his children, Phillip Swan and his wife, Sandra, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Margilea Abel and her husband, Ronald, of Greendale, Wis.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Abel Earles, Christopher Swan and Susan Abel; a sister, Evelyn Schubert and her husband, Walter, of Mission, Texas; brothers and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera; a son, Thomas Swan; his parents, Walter and Viola; three brothers, Ellis, Kenneth and Gordon Swan; and a baby sister, Virginia.

JEAN I. SHAW

CHARLES CITY - Jean I. Shaw, 87, of Charles City, died Saturday (Nov. 10, 2001) at Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday at St. John's United Church of Christ in Pleasant Hill, rural Nashua. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

DUANE JOSEPH HOEFER

MASON CITY - Duane Joseph Hoefer, 73, of rural Mason City, died Thursday (Nov.8, 2001) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001-9th Ave. North, Clear Lake, with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Williams with military honors by the Williams American Legion Post.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, with a public scripture wake service at 7 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake.

The family of Duane Joseph Hoefer has requested that memorial contributions be made in his memory.

Duane Joseph Hoefer was born on May 26, 1928, in Williams, the son of Jacob J. and Mable (Maubach) Hoefer. He attended and received his education in the Williams area schools, graduating from Williams High School. On Dec. 1, 1950, he was inducted into the U.S. Army serving overseas in the Korean Conflict in the 7789 Medical Detachment with the Fifth Army Division, until his honorable discharge on Dec.3, 1952, at Fort Custer, Mich.

Before and after his term in the U.S. Army he was very active in his community, serving as church director, was on the board of the co-op elevator, school board member and was named a Master Swine Producer in 1964. Duane was actively farming at the time of his death, which he did all his life. He moved to the Mason City area in 1965 from Williams to his present home. Duane planted thousands of native trees, reforesting his farm.

He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, and Mended Hearts.

He was united in marriage to Martha Jean Crase on June 26, 1954, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williams and to this union six children blessed their lives.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Martha Jean Hoefer of rural Mason City; six children, Nicholas Hoefer and his wife Sandy of Iowa City, Jennifer Sliwinski of Doylestown, Pa., Thomas Hoefer of Durango, Colo., Patricia Mayer and her husband Kevin of Norwalk, David Hoefer and his wife Terrie of Ames, and Steven Hoefer of San Francisco, Calif.; eleven grandchildren, Rebecca and Elizabeth Hoefer, Travis, Mark, and Alexa Homewood, Andrew, Kate, and Ted Sliwinski, Jacob, Emma, and Simon Hoefer. Also left to cherish his memory are five brothers, Lyle Hoefer of Williams, Donald Hoefer of Ackley, Raymond Hoefer of St. Petersburg, Fla., Roger Hoefer of Peoria, Ill., and Daryl Hoefer of Davenport; three sisters, Kathryn Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla., Evelyn McMillan, Elgin, and Maxine O'Leary of Trenton, Mo.; as well as other relatives and friends.

His parents and a sister, Dorothy Faber, preceded him in death.

EVERETT LOWELL FANKELL

CLEAR LAKE - Everett Lowell Fankell, 90, of Clear Lake, died Friday (Nov. 9, 2001) at his home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday at the Fertile Church of Christ, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Burial will be in the Lincoln Township Cemetery, rural Fertile.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake, and one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church.

The family of Everett Lowell Fankell has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in his memory.

Everett Lowell Fankell was born on Jan.19, 1911, in Grant Township, Fertile, the son of John and Daisy (Youkom) Fankell. He attended and received his education in the Fertile School system. He was united in marriage to Mabel (Jensen) Orcutt in 1959, in Mason City. She preceded him in death in 1975. He was united in marriage to Gladys Jass in 1977 in Missouri. She preceded him in death in 1978.

Everett farmed all his life in the Grant Township in the Fertile area until his retirement in 1972, when he moved to Clear Lake.

He was united in marriage to Lydia Christgau on May 5, 1979, in Austin, Minn.

He was a member of the Church of Christ in Fertile, which his mother was instrumental in starting. He enjoyed traveling and eating and playing cards at the Clear Lake Senior Citizen Center.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Lydia Fankell of the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake; three stepsons, a stepdaughter; a brother, Robert Fankell of Worland, Wyo.; a sister, Betty Raymond of Mason City; eight nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, a sister, Jeanette Hammond, and a brother, Harold Fankell.

JEAN ELAINE PURCELL

GOLDFIELD - Jean Elaine Purcell, 79, died Thursday (Nov. 8, 2001) at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Goldfield with the Rev. Karen Dearchs officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery at Belmond..

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., 6 to 8 p.m. with family present, today at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove.

Jean Elaine Purcell, the daughter of Justin and Anna (Olson) Jarshaw, was born Sept. 19, 1922, in Rake. She attended Rake and Forest City schools.

Jean was united in marriage with Ronald W. Purcell in 1947. They lived in Belmond, Hardy, and Goldfield. Jean moved to Fort Dodge in 1991. She worked at the bus depot in Belmond and she and her husband were owners of the Hardy Café for a few years. Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church in Goldfield and was active with the Meals on Wheels program in Goldfield. She enjoyed walking, spending time with grandchildren and cooking.

Survivors include her seven children: Ronnie Lee Purcell of Des Moines, Carol Ann Buckley of New Sharon, Danny Paul Purcell of Clear Lake, Timothy Elry Purcell of Clarion, Randy Michael Purcell of Eagle Grove, Lois LeBahn of Madisonville, Ky., and David Clark of Mason City; sister, Audrey Hanna and husband, Alroy of Mason City; brother, Jim Jarshaw and wife, Barb of Walnut Creek, Calif.; brother-in-law, Bernard Clark of Mason City; eighteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and special friends, Wally of Fort Dodge, Pearl Whyte, Marlyn Wilson, Martha Ruiter of Goldfield.

Jean will be deeply missed by all who knew her and loved her, especially immediate family and friends.

NORTHWOOD - Leona M. Seater, 84, of Northwood, died Friday (Nov. 9, 2001) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at the Bolan United Methodist Church in Bolan with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Interment will take place at the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Leona was born July 27, 1917, in Walnut, Neb., to Albert and Anna Runtsch. She married Robert W. Seater on Dec. 14, 1938, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed north of Bolan and were involved with purebred Angus cattle.

Her hobbies were her love for gardening, sewing, baking, and most important, spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Seater; parents, Albert and Anna Runtsch; son, James A. Seater; and brother, Albert Runtsch.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Kipp and her husband Fred of Albert Lea; daughter-in-law, Connie Hogen and her husband, Paul of Northwood; grandchildren, Kimm (Kipp) and husband, Tom Christenson of Albert Lea, Jason and his wife, Melissa Seater of Wilmore, Ky., and David Seater of Lexington, Ky.; great grandchildren, Zachary, Alyssa, and Karli Christenson of Albert Lea, and Cameron and Christopher Seater of Lexington, Ky.; two brothers, Clarence Runtsch of Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Lawrence Runtsch of Lake City, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

ROSA MAE ERICSON

FORT DODGE - Rosa Mae Ericson, 90, formerly of Sioux City and Sanborn, and the mother of Gerald Ericson of Mason City, died Saturday (Nov. 10, 2001) in Fort Dodge.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at "Chapel On The Hill", Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge with the Rev. Ron Kitterman and the Rev. Bill Trembly officiating.

Memorials may be directed to Friendship Haven or Hospice of Fort Dodge.

Rosa Mae was born Dec. 6, 1910, in Hecla, S.D. She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1928. She taught country school in South Dakota and Iowa for several years before marrying Arlington Ericson in 1934.

After farming for a few years in South Dakota, they moved to Sanborn, Iowa, where they lived on a farm for 20 years. In 1959, they moved to Sioux City and lived there until moving to Friendship Haven in Northwood in 1991.

Rosa Mae was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fort Dodge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlington Ericson; parents, Andrew and Ella Green; and her brother Richard Green.

Survivors include sons, Laurel and his wife, Lorna of Fort Dodge, and Gerald and his wife, Nancy of Mason City; daughter, Pamela and her husband, Dr. John Kragt of Spirit Lake; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; and her sister, Frances Batchelder of Hawarden.

LAKE MILLS - Ruby L. Lunning, 78, of Lake Mills, died Saturday (Nov. 10, 2001) at the Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Burial will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills.

JEAN I. SHAW

CHARLES CITY - Jean I. Shaw, 87, of 1805 Missouri Ave., Charles City, died Saturday (Nov. 10, 2001) at Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City, where she had been a resident since July.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's United Church of Christ in Pleasant Hill, rural Nashua, with the Rev. Bob Myron of The Little Brown Church, Nashua, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, and one hour before the service at the church.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Jean Shaw Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Jean Irene Ponto was born Nov. 9, 1914, in rural Pleasant Grove Township, Floyd County, the daughter of Edward Thomas and Grace Adelia (Walker) Ponto. She received her education in the rural Pleasant Grove Township Schools and graduated from the Charles City High School.

She received her teaching certificate from the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and taught in the Marble Rock Public School and later at the Pleasant Grove Township schools.

On Sept. 12, 1942, she was united in marriage to Howard Manford Shaw at the home of his Aunt Mazie Adams in Cedar Falls. Following Howard's discharge on Sept. 15, 1945, they started farming on their present farm in Pleasant Grove Township until his retirement in 1979. Howard and Jean continued to live on the farm until Oct. 2, 1992, when they moved to their home in Charles City.

Jean was a faithful member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Pleasant Hill, member of the women's fellowship and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her interests included family genealogy and traveling.

She is survived by her brother, Roger, and his wife Betty Ponto, of rural Green; sister-in-law Alice Shaw of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, on Nov. 8, 1994; her parents; and one brother, Merlin Ponto in 1995.

GREENE - Louise Elma Kretzschmar Goyer, 90, of 7 High School Blvd., Greene, died Sunday (Nov. 11, 2001) at the Sunset Home in Denver.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with interim Pastor Wayne Hagen officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Louise Elma Vierth was born Oct. 30, 1911, in Quasqueton, Buchanan County, daughter of Francis and Lillian (McBride) Vierth. She received her education in the Sumner Public Schools, graduating in 1929, and received her nurses training in St. Paul, Minn. She was a registered nurse at the Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City until 1962 when she retired. She later provided home nursing care for Greene residents for several years.

On Aug. 27, 1932, she was united in marriage to Clarence Donald Kretzschmar at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their first home in Waterloo and later in Sumner before moving to Greene in 1942. Clarence died on Dec. 6, 1971.

She was united in marriage to Lloyd Goyer in 1973. They made their home in Denver until his death on Dec. 5, 1991. Louise returned to Greene, where she made her home until entering the nursing home.

Louise was a faithful member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene, American Legion Auxiliary and the Rural Mail Carriers Auxiliary. Her interests included country music, crocheting, reading Harlequin romance novels, and her kitty cat, Snoopy.

Living family members include her two daughters and their spouses, Nancy and James Lamos of Denver and Jane and Ron Innes of Greene; five grandchildren and their spouses, Robert and Wendy Lamos of Denver, Barry and Wendy Lamos of Hampton, Bryan and Linda Lamos of Duvall, Wash., Marcia and Brett Lashbrook of Waverly, Daniel Innes of Greene; two step grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and five step-great-great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, sister, Frances Heyer, and two brothers, Stinson and Vernon Vierth.

CLEAR LAKE - Vera L. Abrams, 94, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (Nov. 11, 2001) at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake with the Rev. David Wiersbe and the Rev. Richard Varberg officiating. Burial will be at Grant Center Cemetery in rural Clear Lake.

Vera Louise Abrams was born in Clear Lake on Oct. 21, 1907, the daughter of Abe and Louise (Zerbel) Van Hoosen. The family farmed north of Clear Lake and that is where Vera started school.

She moved with her family to a new farm in Royalton, Minn. Vera continued her education there. Two years later, the family moved back to Iowa to care for Louise's mother. They purchased the "home place" - a "Century Farm" now.

Vera attended Ventura High School and graduated in 1926. She furthered her education at Cedar Falls Teachers College that summer term and went on to teach in country schools for five years.

She married Spence Abrams on March 7, 1930, at her parents' home. Early in her married life, Vera accepted the Lord Jesus as her personal savior.

She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake. She taught Sunday school and Women's Bible Study groups for several years.

Vera was a wonderful cook and a gracious hostess who loved to serve her guests. She was a talented seamstress, enjoyed crocheting afghans and doing other handwork. Her family remembers her as a devoted and loving wife and mother.

Vera is survived by her husband, Spence Abrams, of Clear Lake, and four children, Spence Abrams Jr. and wife, Janice, of Clear Lake, Vera LaVonne (Vonnie) Pederson and husband, Sever, of Westland, Mich., Arlyn (Arlee) Abrams and wife, Janice, of Beresford, S.D., and Jenny Copeland and husband Timothy, of Bradford, Vt. Also, a sister, Etta Mae Conroy of Garner; 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

GOLDFIELD - Jean Elaine Purcell, 79, died Thursday (Nov. 8, 2001) at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at the United Methodist Church in Goldfield with the Rev. Karen Dearchs officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery, Belmond.

Jean Elaine Purcell, the daughter of Justin and Anna (Olson) Jarshaw, was born Sept. 19, 1922, in Rake. She attended Rake and Forest City schools.

Jean was united in marriage with Ronald W. Purcell in 1947. They lived in Belmond, Hardy and Goldfield. Jean moved to Fort Dodge in 1991. She worked at the bus depot in Belmond, and she and her husband were owners of the Hardy Café for a few years.

Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church in Goldfield and was active with the Meals on Wheels program in Goldfield. She enjoyed walking, spending time with grandchildren and cooking.

Survivors include her seven children: Ronnie Lee Purcell of Des Moines, Carol Ann Buckley of New Sharon, Danny Paul Purcell of Clear Lake, Timothy Elry Purcell of Clarion, Randy Michael Purcell of Eagle Grove, Lois LeBahn of Madisonville, Ky., and David Clark of Mason City; sister, Audrey Hanna and husband, Alroy of Mason City; brother, Jim Jarshaw and wife, Barb of Walnut Creek, Calif.; brother-in-law, Bernard Clark of Mason City; eighteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and special friends, Wally of Fort Dodge, Pearl Whyte, Marlyn Wilson, Martha Ruiter of Goldfield.

Ruby B. Lunning was born Dec. 30, 1922, in Hartland Township, Worth County, near Northwood, the daughter of Ludvig S. and Gena J. (Lokken) Loland. She was baptized and confirmed at Silver Lake Lutheran Church and attended country school. She worked as an aide at St. Joseph's Hospital in Mason City.

On Jan. 26, 1947, Ruby was united in marriage to Burton Curtis Lunning in Thompson by the Rev. J.J. Skarpness. Together, they owned and managed the Arlington Hotel in Lake Mills for over seven years. Burton passed away on Sept. 1, 1992.

Ruby loved her family and her church where she was very active in Ladies Aid, circles and quilting. She loved to travel. She was regarded by many as a "Good Person."

Ruby is survived by her son, Chuck Lunning, of Waverly; granddaughter, Marie and her husband, Mike Kline, of Cedar Rapids; grandson, Scott Jensen, of Eva Beach, Oahu, Hawaii; son-in-law, Ken Jensen, of Iowa Falls; sister-in-law, Melva and her husband, Elmer Tollagson, of Thompson; two brothers-in-law, Wally and his wife, Tootie Lunning, of Albert Lea, Minn.; and Darrell and his wife, Carla Lunning, of Albert Lea, Minn.; along with several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

CLEAR LAKE - Robert F. Kuenstling, 77, of Clear Lake, died Friday (Nov. 9, 2001) of natural causes at his winter home in Mesa, Ariz.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Sacred Heart Church in Waterloo, with the Rev. Patrick Geary officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery with full military rites conducted by American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Robert was born May 23, 1924 in Waterloo, the son of Maximillian and Emma (Nawarotha) Kuenstling. He was a graduate of East High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theater.

He was united in marriage to Sonja Gramlich on July 3, 1948. She died in 1992.

Robert a Waterloo Police Officer retiring in 1973. After moving to Clear Lake in 1974, he enjoyed golfing, boating, traveling and occasionally working for Jim Hanson Ford. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

He is survived by two children, Ron Kuenstling and his wife, Ina, of Waterloo, and Peggy Van Syoc and her husband, David, of Clear Lake; five grandchildren, Max and Lee Kuenstling, of Waterloo, Angie and Rob Palmer of Muscatine, Amy and Mark Palmer, of Clear Lake and Adam and Mandy Van Syoc, of Mason City; and three great-grandchildren, Danielle, Zachary and Alexander Palmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Henry and Herbert; and his wife.

GENE GERLEMAN

FORT ATKINSON - Gene Gerleman, 68, of Fort Atkinson, died on Monday (Nov. 12, 2001) at his home, surrounded by his family, after a short courageous battle with cancer.

Gene was born on Jan. 22, 1933 the son of Joseph and Rose (Langreck) Gerleman, near St. Lucas. Gene attended country school near Little Turkey and then graduated from St. Lucas Catholic School in St. Lucas.

He served in the U.S. Army in England from 1953-1955.

Gene married Joanne Kupka on April 26, 1958, at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson.

He returned to the area and worked several jobs. Gene then worked for the Secondary Roads Department of Winneshiek County, mowing for the last 15 years.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Huber-Steffes American Legion Post #672 of Fort Atkinson. Gene was an avid sports fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Detroit Lions and of racecar driver Jeff Gordon.

LUCILLE 'EILERS' FRANCIS

OSAGE - Lucille W. Francis, 80, of Osage, died Tuesday (Nov. 13, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Lucille Winnifred Eilers was born Jan. 10, 1921 in Floyd County, the daughter of Tjark and Ruth (Newlon) Eilers. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Osage. She was educated in a rural school in Floyd County. Lucille graduated from Orchard High School in 1938, as salutatorian of her class.

Lucille was united in marriage to Keith Francis of New Haven on Feb. 25, 1940. They farmed in the New Haven and Mitchell areas for 49 years. They moved to Osage in May of 1982, retiring in 1989, after Keith suffered a stroke. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this year.

She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage and served in several offices on local and zone levels in Lutheran Women's Missionary League.

She enjoyed working with youth and was a 4-H Leader for 20 years. She was chosen Iowa Merit Mother of the Year in 1966.

She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and playing cards with friends and neighbors. They spent their winter months in Texas and Arizona for many years.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at he Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Christian F. Gugel officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

DEAN W. MAUSER

OSAGE - Dean W. Mauser, 78, of Osage, died Monday (Nov. 12, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Hospice Unit in Osage.

Dean was born Nov. 25, 1922 in Douglas Township in Mitchell County, the son of Gotlieb and Elizabeth (Fell) Mauser. He graduated from Osage Community High School in 1942. He farmed the family farm near New Haven.

Dean was united in marriage to Connie Fink on March 18, 1945 at the Methodist Parsonage in Osage. They made their home on the farm near New Haven.

In 1974 they moved to the River Road near Osage. He was employed by Federal Crop Insurance Corp. as a loss adjustment supervisor.

In 1981 he established the Mauser Insurance Company in Osage with his wife, Connie and his son, Richard. He became semi-retired in 1989 and he and his wife, Connie, enjoyed their winters in Port Arkansas, Texas, where he enjoyed fishing and being by the Ocean.

Dean was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osage, Lions Club, and a member of AA for 20 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

ERNEST ORLANDO GUNDERSON

NORTHWOOD -Ernest Orlando Gunderson, 95, Northwood, died Monday (Nov. 12, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St. in Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer and the Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Friends may call from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the First Lutheran Church and one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church.

The family of Ernest O. Gunderson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Northwood Rescue Unit or to the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in his memory.

Ernest O. Gunderson was born on May 1, 1906, the son of Gilbert E. and Ida G. (Lobben) Gunderson. He was baptized at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church rural Kensett, and moved to Northwood in 1922.

He attended and graduated from Northwood High School in 1924, and also attended and graduated from Luther College in 1929. After completing his schooling in 1929, he began working as a bookkeeper at the Mankato, Minn. branch office for John Deere, and also for the Northwood John Deere Company in Northwood until it closed in 1937.

He was united in marriage to Edith M. Severson on Nov. 25, 1939, in Northwood. She preceded him in death on Feb. 2, 1998. In 1939, Ernie began working at the Northwood Post office as a postal clerk and also had a bike shop in his home.

In 1949, he took a leave of absence from the post office to work at Douglas Aircraft Corporation in Long Beach, Calif., and also owned his own bike shop in Fullerton, Calif.

In 1951, he moved back to Northwood and continued as a bookkeeper for John Deere Company in Northwood, Hart Motors in Mason City, and was a dispatcher for the Sheriff's office in Northwood, and also enjoyed doing his woodworking in his home.

In 1957, he went back to Luther College and earned his teaching certificate. From 1958 until 1962, he taught school at Manly.

In 1962, Ernie and Edith purchased Arlington Hotel in Lake Mills and ran the business until 1969. He also taught Industrial Arts in Emmons, Minn. until moving back to Northwood where he was the green's keeper at the Northwood Country Club.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood and taught Sunday school for 38 years. Ernie also was an usher and served on many church committees at First Lutheran.

Ernie had been a resident at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Mason City since August 1998.

Left to cherish his memory is a daughter, Cher Ami Barr (Roger) of Northwood; a grandson, Charles Barr and wife, Marlene, of Rochester, Minn.; and a granddaughter, Debra and husband, Tom Munoz, of Randall; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Edith on Feb. 2, 1998.

Eileen Marie Mantz was born on June 29, 1926, in Elma, the daughter of William and Lillie (Weers) Mantz.

She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation in the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Elma. Eileen attended and received her education in the Elma School system, graduating from Elma High School. She also attended Luther College where she received her teaching degree in math and physical education. Eileen began her teaching career, which spanned 39 years. She taught in Ossian, Armstrong and Northwood. Later in her teaching career she took advanced studies at Colorado State University and Carlton College. She then taught computer science as well as math.

Her interests included traveling, fishing, bridge and the field of computers. Eileen was a fountain of information and was blessed with a very keen memory. She was relied upon to answer many a question. Eileen loved children and her church, and was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood and was faithful in her attendance until her health made that impossible.

Left to cherish her memory are her three cousins, Marlene Dillon of Cresco, Lois Dinger of Riceville, and Mayzee Wright of Osage. Eileen is also survived by her very special and long time friend, Alice Whitcome, of Northwood. Eileen became a close friend of the Whitcome family, and Godmother of Julie Whitcome, Rees and Molly Dillon.

PATRICIA 'PAT' KAY ROWSON

PLYMOUTH -Patricia "Pat" Kay Rowson, 63, of Plymouth, died Sunday (Nov. 11, 2001) at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Plymouth, with the Rev. Terra Amundson and the Rev. Richard Pippert officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at the church during a time of fellowship.

Pat was born Dec. 2, 1937 in Osage, the daughter of Ed and Hazel (Frank) Arp. She graduated from Osage High School and then was united in marriage to Dean "Buck" Rowson on Aug. 22, 1963 in Osage.

They lived near Rock Falls for a short time before purchasing a farm near Riceville. Pat was a homemaker who also farmed right alongside her husband for all their years in agriculture. They retired from farming in 1991 and moved to Plymouth.

Pat enjoyed playing cards, reading, planting flowers, taking walks, and spending time with her two pets, her dog, Taffy, and her cat, Scooter. She also loved hearing a good joke and visiting with her many friends. Pat will be remembered for her sparkling blue eyes and her wonderful sense of humor.

Pat is survived by four brothers, Marvin Arp of Plymouth, Bill and Joyce Squier, of St. Ansgar, Keith and Shirley Squier, of Centerville, and Larry and Delores Squier, of Osage; two sisters, Phyllis and Pete Peterson and Lillian and Don Adams, all of Austin, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Jeanne Arp, of Mason City, and Eleanor Squier of Osage, many nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one brother, Dean Squier.

MASON CITY - James Peter Preftakes, 77, of 300 Second St. N.E. died Tuesday (Nov. 13, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 Second St. S.W. with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with a flag folding ceremony and taps provided by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, with a Trisagion service at 6 p.m.

James Peter Preftakes was born Aug. 7, 1924 in Albert Lea, Minn. the son of Peter and Harriett (Zubulake) Preftakes. The family moved to Hampton in 1936 then to Mason City in 1939. Jim graduated from Mason City High School in 1942.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served during the Normandy Invasion. He was discharged in 1945.

Jim married Tassie Striggles on May 1, 1949 in Des Moines. Jim was a long-time employee of the Hanford Inn and Sheraton Motor Inn, where he served in several capacities, including chef, catering manager and assistant manager.

Jim was a member of the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, enjoyed golf, sports and wintering in South Padre Island, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Tassie (Dolly) Preftakes, of Mason City; daughter, Pamela P. Wingrod and her husband, Meyer, of Havertown, Pa.; son, Nicholas J. Preftakes and his wife, Renee, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; brother, Alex Preftakes and his wife, Phyliss, of Mason City; his brother-in-law, Henry Mataloni, of Mason City; nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Demetra (Tula) Mataloni; and nephew, Michael Preftakes.

ERNEST ORLANDO GUNDERSON

NORTHWOOD - Ernest Orlando Gunderson, 95, Northwood, died Monday (Nov. 12, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral will be 1 p.m. on Friday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St. in Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer and the Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

The family of Ernest O. Gunderson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Northwood Rescue Unit or to the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in his memory.

Ernest O. Gunderson was born on May 1, 1906, the son of Gilbert E. and Ida G. (Lobben) Gunderson. He was baptized at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church in rural Kensett, and moved to Northwood in 1922. He attended and graduated from Northwood High School in 1924, and also attended and graduated from Luther College in 1929.

After completing his schooling in 1929, he began working as a bookkeeper at the Mankato, Minn. branch office for John Deere, and also for the Northwood John Deere Company in Northwood until it closed in 1937.

He was united in marriage to Edith M. Severson on November 25, 1939, in Northwood. She preceded him in death on February 2, 1998.

In 1939, Ernie began working at the Northwood Post office as a postal clerk and also had a bike shop in his home. In 1949, he took a leave of absence from the post office to work at Douglas Aircraft Corporation in Long Beach, Calif. and also owned his own bike shop in Fullerton, Calif.

In 1951, he moved back to Northwood and continued as a bookkeeper for John Deere Company in Northwood, Hart Motors in Mason City, and was a dispatcher for the Sheriff's office in Northwood, and also enjoyed doing his woodworking in his home.

In 1957, he went back to Luther College and earned his teaching certificate. From 1958 until 1962, he taught school at Manly.

In 1962, Ernie and Edith purchased Arlington Hotel in Lake Mills and ran the business until 1969. He also taught Industrial Arts in Emmons, Minn. until moving back to Northwood where he was the green's keeper at the Northwood Country Club.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood and taught Sunday school for 38 years. Ernie also was an usher and served on many church comities at First Lutheran.

Ernie had been a resident at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Mason City since August 1998.

Left to cherish his memory is a daughter, Cher Ami Barr (Roger) of Northwood; a grandson, Charles Barr and wife, Marlene, of Rochester, Minn.; and a granddaughter, Debra and husband, Tom Munoz, of Randall; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Jamie and Mandy; as well as other relatives and friends.

His parents; and his wife, Edith, preceded him in death on Feb. 2, 1998.

DEAN W. MAUSER

OSAGE - Dean W. Mauser, 78, of Osage, died Monday (Nov. 12, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Hospice Unit in Osage.

Dean was born Nov. 25, 1922 in Douglas Township in Mitchell County, the son of Gotlieb and Elizabeth (Fell) Mauser. He graduated from Osage Community High School in 1942. He farmed the family farm near New Haven.

Dean was united in marriage to Connie Fink on March 18, 1945 at the Methodist Parsonage in Osage. They made their home on the farm near New Haven.

In 1974 they moved to the River Road near Osage. He was employed by Federal Crop Insurance Corp. as a loss adjustment supervisor.

In 1981 he established the Mauser Insurance Company in Osage with his wife, Connie and his son, Richard. He became semi-retired in 1989 and he and his wife, Connie, enjoyed their winters in Port Aransas, Texas, where he enjoyed fishing and being by the Ocean.

Dean was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osage, Lions Club, and a member of AA for 20 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the

LUCILLE 'EILERS' FRANCIS

OSAGE - Lucille W. Francis, 80, of Osage, died Tuesday (Nov. 13, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Lucille Winnifred Eilers was born Jan. 10, 1921 in Floyd County, the daughter of Tjark and Ruth (Newlon) Eilers. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Osage. She was educated in a rural school in Floyd County. Lucille graduated from Orchard High School in 1938, as salutatorian of her class.

Lucille was united in marriage to Keith Francis of New Haven on Feb. 25, 1940. They farmed in the New Haven and Mitchell areas for 49 years. They moved to Osage in May of 1982, retiring in 1989, after Keith suffered a stroke. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this year.

She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage and served in several offices on local and zone levels in Lutheran Women's Missionary League.

She enjoyed working with youth and was a 4-H Leader for 20 years. She was chosen Iowa Merit Mother of the Year in 1966.

She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and playing cards with friends and neighbors. They spent their winter months in Texas and Arizona for many years.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Christian F. Gugel officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and continue one hour before services at the church.

She is survived by her husband, Keith Francis, of Osage; a son, Donald Francis and his wife, Janelle, of Mitchell; a daughter, Shirley Rake and her husband, Elwood, of Osage; four grandchildren, Doug Rake, of New Orleans, La., Jennifer Kisley and her husband, John, of St. Ansgar; Beth Steffensen and her husband, Tony, of Des Moines, and Jeffrey Francis, of St. Ansgar; six great-grandchildren, Andrea, Morgan and Steven Kisley, and Mercedes, Elijah, and Grace Steffensen; and a brother, Lee Eilers, of Jacksonville, Texas.
