ALTON MELVIN NELSON

CLEAR LAKE - Alton Melvin Nelson, 88, 421 S. Ninth St. in Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Memorials may be given to the Alton M. Nelson Memorial fund.

Alton was born at home on Nov. 22, 1912, in Wasua, Neb., the son of Carl A. and Hattie Caroline (Bloomquist) Nelson. He was baptized Lutheran and later, on March 24, 1929, confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Missouri Synod in Nebraska.

When Alton was 3 years old, they moved from Wasau to Walnut, Neb. where his father farmed. He attended a country school in Walnut until the 8th grade, when he quit school to help his father with the farm.

On July 28, 1935, he married the love of his life, Gertrude Buerkley. While they farmed in Orchard, Neb., they had three children. Due to a severe drought in 1952, they sold the farm and moved east of Sheffield. After renting a farm there for one year, they moved again in 1954 and purchased a 240-acre farm north of Clear Lake.

While on the farm Alton raised corn, beans and even raised sugar beets for Crystal Sugar for two years. He had 10,000 laying hens and 500 goslings.

In 1964 they moved into the town of Clear Lake. They purchased the Lake Park Tap & Grill, the Town Pump, and The Cave. Alton and Gert ran the Lake Park together until they retired in 1975. They were married for 64 years.

Alton was an active member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura, and also a member of the Clear Lake Noon Lions for 30 years.

He enjoyed traveling, dancing, woodworking, gardening and fishing.

Alton had many friends and enjoyed life to the fullest, he never had a bad word about anyone and was always smiling. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandpa. He will be missed very much by all.

Alton is survived by three children, Natalie Weber and her husband, David, of Avondale, Ariz., Aloyce "Bud" Nelson and his wife, Juan, of Burlington, and Elouise "Elly" Harmeyer and her husband, Lloyd, of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren, Teresa Runia and her husband Curt, of Chandler, Ariz., Dwight Krukow, of Clear Lake, Sheila Krukow, of Chandler, Ariz., Susan Story, of Rowlett, Texas, Ronda Fredrickson and her husband, Mark, of Tacoma, Wash., Julie Smith, of Kent Wash., and Brett Nelson and his wife, Carin, of Burlington; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Clayton Nelson and his wife, Wanda, of South Sioux City, Neb.

Alton was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gertrude (Nov 9, 1999), and one grandchild.

CLARION - Dora Nawrocki, 87, of Clarion, formerly of Columbia, Tenn., died Friday (Oct. 26, 2001) at the USA Healthcare Center in Clarion.

ADA 'ANN' ADAMS

STACYVILLE - Ada "Ann" Adams,78, of Stacyville, died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2001) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

A Memorial Mass and services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with Father Joseph Schneider officiating. Inurnment will be in Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville.

The family will receive family and friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Visitation Catholic Church with a 7:30 p.m. scripture service.

Ada was born Dec. 6, 1922 in Elliott, N.D., the daughter of Earl and Glade Barber. On Nov. 9, 1942, Ada married William "Bill" Adams in Plymouth, Mich.

Ada was a devoted mother and grandmother. She worked as a 4-H leader for six years and was a Cub Scout leader. Once her children were all in school, Ada worked as a nurse's aid and went back to school to become an LPN at the age of 50. She was employed at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home until her retirement.

She is survived by seven children, John Adams, of Stacyville, Joyce Buttolph, of Austin, Minn., Joseph Adams and his wife, Pat, of Virginia Beach, Va., Janice Trowbridge and her husband, George, of Pensacola, Fla., Jody Cox, of Mason City, June Adams, of St. Ansgar, and Jerome Adams and his wife, Marilyn, of Stacyville; one sister-in-law, Anna L. Adams, of Stacyville; 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren; and special friends, Catherine MacLaren, Ruth Wiltse, and Marie Crow.

Ada was guided to the other side by her parents; husband, Bill Adams; brother, Bob Barber; and son, James Adams.

CHARLES CITY - Jacqueline L. Sheridan, 35, of 120 Chautauqua Ave. in Charles City died Wednesday morning (Oct. 31, 2001) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital due to complications from pneumonia.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th N.W. in Mason City, with the Rev. Sarah Rohret Odoom officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Jackie was born on May 13, 1966 at New Hampton. She was the daughter of Pat D. Sheridan, of Manly and Barbara Holm, of rural route in Plymouth. She was baptized at Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler. She lived at home until she was 12 when she moved to the Comprehensive Systems home in Charles City. When she turned 21 she moved to Chautauqua Riverside Home until her health recently deteriorated.

Those who shared in Jackie's life include her father, Pat Sheridan, of Manly, and her mother, Barbara and her husband, Merle Holm, of rural route, Plymouth; her three sisters and families, Jeannie and her husband, Dean Johnson Jr. and their children, Brooke and Ashley, of Mason City; Joannie and her husband, Chip Hillesheim and children, Hillary, Holly and Cutler, of Carbondale, Ill; and Janell and her husband, Mick Norton, and their children, Stephanie, Evan, Megan, Melody, Hannah, Leah, and Nicole, of Dakota City, Neb.; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by both her paternal and maternal grandparents, and one nephew, Cory Hillesheim.

ALGONA - Wayne E. Myers, 66, of Algona, died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2001) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center.

JAMES CLAIRE JOHNSON

OSAGE - A memorial service for James Claire Johnson, 85, of Osage, will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Osage, with the Rev. Karen Nicholas Dungan officiating. A private burial will be held at the Osage Memorial Cemetery.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Johnson residence at 926 State Street in Osage.

Mr. Johnson died on Wednesday (Oct. 31, 2001) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

He was born on Aug. 18, 1916 to Carl and Agnes (Palmer) Johnson on a farm in Union Township, Mitchell County. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1936.

He married Edith May Farmer on Nov. 19, 1944 in the Congregational Church in Osage. He was a grain and livestock farmer in Union Township until retiring to Osage in 1973.

He was a member of the Mitchell County Farm Bureau from 1945 until his retirement. He was a member of the Mitchell County Farm Bureau from 1945 until his retirement.

He enjoyed celebrating his Norwegian heritage as a member of the Sons of Norway. He was a longtime member of the Union Presbyterian Church and subsequently, a member of the United Methodist Churches in St. Ansgar and Osage.

He enjoyed fishing and watching baseball and football games. His children and grandchildren were the center of his life. For the past 12 years, Claire and May have spent the winter in Mesa, Ariz.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, May; three daughters, Pamela (Herbert) Haack, of Rochester, Minn., Mary Lynn Johnson, of Spokane, Wash., and Lu Johnson, of Apple Valley, Minn.; a son, Lee (Janelle) Johnson, of Overland Park, Kan.; five grandchildren, Natalie Haack, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Leah Haack, of Rochester, Minn., Renee, Adams, and Todd Johnson, of Overland Park, Kan.; sister-in-law, Helen Johnson, of Osage; two nieces, Carolyn Srodes, of Sarasota, Fla., Karen (Alan) Damjanovic, of Orchard; and a nephew, Mark Johnson, of Osage.

James Claire Johnson was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Merle and Vanus; and a niece, Sherri Prince.

CYLINDER - William John "Bill" Helmke, 69, of Cylinder, died Thursday (Nov. 1, 2001) at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Whittemore with the Rev. Michael Botsford officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Whittemore.

HOWARD DWIGHT SHERER

MASON CITY - Howard Dwight Sherer, 75, of 1618 S. Wilson Ave. died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2001) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave. with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military services by the Mason City Memorial Association with taps played by his grandson, Matt Borcherding.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Howard Dwight Sherer was born April 2, 1926 in Hampton, the son of Will and Leona (Rhutasel) Sherer. He attended school in Hampton and joined the Navy prior to graduation.

Howard received his G.E.D. while in the service and later he completed one year of Junior College. He served in the U.S. Navy from April 1943 to April 1947 aboard the USS Guadalcanal C.V.E.

In the early years he sold appliances and later was employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and was in insurance sales for many years.

In 1947 he married Edna Chilcutt and from this union three children were born. In 1974 he married Phyllis Overbeck.

Howard was an avid hunter and fisherman. He truly enjoyed camping and fishing on the Mississippi River at Red Wing, Minnesota. He took a number of trips to Montana and Wyoming hunting deer and antelope.

Howard was a member of the local gun club and the NRA (National Rifle Association) and the local VFW. He also enjoyed using his computer and being a member of the local ham radio club.

Howard's most precious moments were spent with grandchildren and attending their baseball, basketball, and hockey games.

He will be missed dearly by his wife, Phyllis Sherer, of Mason City; two sons, Michael Sherer and his wife, Christi Hartsock, of Council Bluffs, and Larry Sherer and his wife, Lynette, of Maxwell; one daughter, Linda Ward and her husband, Bob, of Clear Lake; two stepdaughters, Sandy Huntley-Loup and her husband, Charles, of Mason City, and Cindy Borcherding and her husband, David, of Northwood; one stepson, Darrell Overbeck and his wife, Kim, of Mason City; grandchildren, Angie Walker and her husband, Tony, of Mason City, Michelle Sherer, Omaha, Neb., Amanda Sherer, of Council Bluffs, Travis Sherer, of Vancouver, British Columbia, Erika Baughman and her husband, Chris, of Nashua, N. BELMOND - Violet B. Wagner, 93, of Belmond, passed away Wednesday (Oct. 31, 2001) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Funeral services for Violet B. Wagner will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery.

Violet Bessie Wagner was born on a farm seven miles south of Belmond on April 27, 1908 to Andrew and Elsie (Tuntland) Tuttle. She was the youngest of 10 children. Violet was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. She grew up south of Belmond where she attended country schools.

Violet was united in marriage to Chris Wagner on March 3, 1928 in Dows. The couple made their home in the Belmond area where Violet worked as a housewife and mother.

Violet was a Gold Star Mother in the American Legion Auxiliary for many years, where she held several offices. Violet was also a member of Grandmothers Club, Hospital Auxiliary and Senior Citizens.

Violet was fond of all kinds of music and enjoyed playing cards.

Leaving to mourn her loss are sons, Roger and his wife, Marge, of Northwood, Verdell and his wife, Juanita, of Vernal, Utah, and Howard and his wife, Jeanne, of Webster, Wis.; a daughter, Kaye Jackson, and her husband, Paul, of Kanawha; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, six great- great-grandchildren; a very special bear friend and companion, "Dandy"; and many nieces and nephews.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Chris in 1971; two sons, Richard and Jackie; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; seven brothers, Guy, Melvin, Levi, Art, Ed, Morgan, and Clifford; and two sisters, Allie and Ellen.

KANAWHA - Jennie Irene Eekhoff, 91, died Thursday (Nov. 1, 2001) at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church in Kanawha with Pastor G. David Daley officiating. Burial will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Jennie, the daughter of Albert and Eva Borchers Nieman, was born Aug. 8, 1910, on the family farm near Kanawha. She received her formal education in the Amsterdam Township country school.

Jennie was united in marriage with John Eekhoff on Feb. 22, 1933, at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church parsonage. The couple farmed in the areas of Kanawha and Britt until retiring in 1974.

Later that same year, they purchased a home and moved into Kanawha. John passed away on Dec. 23, 1983. Jennie continued to reside in her home in Kanawha until March of 2000 when she became a resident of Westview Care Center in Britt, following a fall.

Her family was a great joy to her and she loved helping care for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, crocheting and helping with Kanawha congregate meals.

She was a member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church and the Ladies Aid Society.

Jennie is survived by her children, John and his wife, Thelma, of Kanawha, Albert and his wife, Roberta, of Nevada, Naomi Erickson and her husband, Kenneth, of Washington, and Don and his wife, Barb, of Britt; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Martin Nieman and his wife, Joyce, of Britt; one sister-in-law, June Nieman of Britt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; one daughter, Jeanine; one grandson, Albert Eekhoff Jr.; two sisters, Tena and Grace; and three brothers, Casper, Ed and John.

PLYMOUTH - Lester William Wurn, 90, of Melbourne, Ark., formerly of Plymouth, died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2001) at the Pioneer Nursing Home in Melbourne.

Lester William Wurn was born June 3, 1911, in Plymouth, the son of William and Bessie (Pace) Wurn. He graduated from Plymouth High School.

Following graduation, he met Iona Travis in Rochester, Minn. They were united in marriage on Feb. 27, 1938, at the Methodist Church in Rochester. They lived in Rock Island, Ill., and later moved to Plymouth, where they made their home for more than 50 years. Together, they owned and operated The Donut House in Manly. They also owned and operated the T&W Grocery Store.

In his most recent years, he worked at Westview Apartments as a custodian. Following the death of his wife in April 2000, he moved to Mountain View, Ark., where he continued to enjoy all life had to offer.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Mason City and Plymouth Senior Citizens and was a lifetime member of the Gideons.

While living in Arkansas he attended the First United Methodist Church in Mountain View and continued his involvement with the Gideons.

He enjoyed singing in church choirs, playing cards and spending time with his family. First and foremost, he was a child of God. His passion in life was to share the good news of Jesus Christ. His memory will be one that will live on forever.

He is survived by his only daughter, Deva Wurn of Plymouth; his sisters, Lauraine Kreamer of Modesto, Calif., and Maxine Kreamer and husband, Russ, of Boise, Idaho; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

MASON CITY - Nadine G. Hansen, 86, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Wednesday (Oct. 31, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Nadine G. Hansen was born Oct. 14, 1915, in College Springs, the daughter of Alfred O. and Laura (West) Hansen. She graduated from College Springs High School in 1933.

She then had an opportunity during the Depression to attend college. She attended and graduated from Wayne State Teachers College in 1936 and in 1944 received her M.A. from the University of Michigan.

Nadine taught in Carroll, Neb., Manilla, Iowa, and in Ida Grove. She moved to Mason City in 1943. She taught Latin at Monroe, Roosevelt and John Adams schools and at Mason City High School for 36 years, retiring in 1979.

Nadine was a member of First United Methodist Church, WSG (church circle), PEO chapter DZ and the Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by two nieces, Patricia Hansen of Baton Rouge, La., and Laura Irwin, also of Baton Rouge; one nephew, Clynord Hansen Jr. of Kenner, La.; three great-nephews; two great-nieces; and a dear friend, Naomi Decker Jensen of Mason City.

OSAGE - A memorial service for James Claire Johnson, 85, of Osage, will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Osage with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan officiating. Burial at the Osage Cemetery will be private.

Mr. Johnson died on Wednesday (Oct. 31, 2001) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

He was born on Aug. 18, 1916, to Carl and Agnes (Palmer) Johnson on a farm in Union Township, Mitchell County. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1936.

He married Edith May Farmer on Nov. 19, 1944, at the Congregational Church in Osage. He was a grain and livestock farmer in Union Township until retiring to Osage in 1973.

He was a member of the Mitchell County Farm Bureau from 1945 until his retirement.

He enjoyed celebrating his Norwegian heritage as a member of the Sons of Norway. He was a longtime member of the Union Presbyterian Church and, subsequently, a member of the United Methodist churches in St. Ansgar and Osage.

He enjoyed fishing and watching baseball and football games. His children and grandchildren were the center of his life. For the past 12 years, Claire and May spent the winters in Mesa, Ariz.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, May; three daughters, Pamela (Herbert) Haack of Rochester, Minn., Mary Lynn Johnson of Spokane, Wash., and Lu Johnson of Apple Valley, Minn.; a son, Lee (Janelle) Johnson of Overland Park, Kan.; five grandchildren, Natalie Haack of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Leah Haack of Rochester, Minn., and Renee, Adam and Todd Johnson of Overland Park, Kan.; a sister-in-law, Helen Johnson of Osage; two nieces, Carolyn Srodes of Sarasota, Fla., and Karen (Alan) Damjanovic of Orchard; and a nephew, Mark Johnson of Osage.

Luluvon Maxine Ostrander, daughter of Harry and Lucy (Michaelson) Frowick, was born May 13, 1923, at her rural Winnebago County home. She graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1942.

She married her high school sweetheart Leslie Ostrander on Oct. 6, 1943, at her parents' home in rural Buffalo Center. Luluvon and Leslie lived on a farm near Buffalo Center until 1975, when they moved to town. In March 2001, they moved to Town Square Apartments in Forest City. Luluvon moved to the Good Samaritan Center in May.

Luluvon spent most of her life as a homemaker, but was very involved in church and community activities. She was active as a 4-H Club leader, women's Farm Bureau chairperson and member, Literary Club, Sunshine Birthday Club, and church circle member. For more than 50 years she belonged to Eastern Star, holding many offices including Worthy Matron.

After her three children were grown, Luluvon worked at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center as a cook. She was an active member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church for more than 50 years. Luluvon's passion in life was her family, church and nature-in particular, gardening and bird watching. She was especially proud of her Norwegian heritage.

Luluvon and Leslie travel extensively in their RV trailer during their retirement years. Special trips included New Zealand, Norway and Alaska.

Luluvon is survived by her husband, Leslie Ostrander; her children, Carol Fisher and her husband, Don, of Anaheim, Calif., Vern Ostrander and his wife, Cheryl, of Des Moines, and Mark Ostrander and his wife, Jean, of Clear Lake; eight grandchildren, Jeff Ghaemaghamy, Ravaani (Debra) Ghaemaghamy, Sandra Ghaemaghamy Botterill of New Zealand, Megan Ostrander of Des Moines, Sara Ostrander of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Michael, Anna and Laura Ostrander of Clear Lake. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren living in New Zealand.

PHYLLIS L. ROTTLER

Phyllis Leone Pooley was born Dec. 14, 1915, on her parents' farm in rural Union Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Charles Gilbert (Bert) and Margaret Amy (Murphy) Pooley, and died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene having suffered nine years from symptoms related to Alzheimer's disease.

She first attended one-room country school and graduated from Greene High School in 1933. She attended the University of Iowa and graduated in 1937 with a bachelor of arts degree in political science and education. Until 1940, Phyllis taught civics, history and coached girls' basketball in Alden, Iowa.

It was while teaching in Alden, Phyllis met another teacher and coach, Vernon Christian Rottler. Prior to her marriage, she worked at Younkers in Des Moines and took civilian pilot's training, receiving her pilot's license and becoming a member of the Petticoat Flyers. Phyllis and Vern were married April 26, 1942, in Omaha, Neb.

While Vern served in the Army, they lived in Omaha, Salina, Kan., and San Francisco, Calif. In 1946 they moved to Greene to a farm where they raised five children. After 30 years of farming, they retired and moved into their new home overlooking the Shell Rock River in Greene.

Phyllis channeled her boundless energy and tenacious dedication into serving her family, church and community. She rarely missed an athletic or musical event, even after her children were grown. Phyllis was a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church in Charles City where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, served on St. Margaret's Guild and on the Bishops' Committee for 18 years.

She was a founding member in the Greene Betterment Council and the Greene Historical Society. She was an active fund-raiser for the Greene Public Library and served as its president.

Phyllis especially enjoyed working with the Girl Scouts. She organized Senior Girl Scouting in Greene, leading four canoe trips to the Boundary Waters. She was active in scouting for 33 years including 15 years on the North Iowa Girl Scout Council, four of those years as president.

She served on the Butler County Republican Central Committee for 10 years, four years as co-chair. She was invited to Terrace Hill by Gov. Robert and Billie Ray to be recognized as one of the top five fund-raisers in the state. In 1991, Phyllis was awarded the Governor's Iowa Hall of Fame Award for volunteers, in recognition of her life of service.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Steven of Des Moines, Gary of Greene, Ann Kruse of Dumont, Morgan Rivers (f/k/a Mary Rottler) of Des Moines, and Susy Rosenblatt of West Des Moines; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern in 1980; her sister, Persis Pooley in 1997; and her daughter-in-law, Jodee Rottler in 1998.

Lloyd was born on the family farm May 3, 1910, one of nine children to Julius and Alvina (Hillmer) Krumrey. He attended school at Colwell High School. He was very proud that he lived his entire life on the same farm and had the dirt in his blood.

On May 26, 1934, he was united in marriage to Ruth Raymond at the Lutheran parsonage at Elkader. To this union was born two children.

He was a former deacon at the United Church of Christ where he and his wife were members. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau and lifetime member of Colwell Senior Citizens. Lloyd served on the Colwell School Board for six years.

He belonged to the Iowa Trappers Association and the NRA. Trapping was a very important part of his life and something that he loved to share with his children. He also enjoyed taking fishing trips to Red Lake and Gull Rock in Ontario and Lake of the Woods and Kabetogama, in Northern Minnesota. He was an avid deer hunter, and in the early years he would hunt and fish near Lansing on the Mississippi and take a trip to Montana. He was known to be a great long-distance shooter.

When farming did not fill his hours, he could be found tinkering with machinery and helping all who asked. He was very adept at gardening.

Those thankful in sharing Lloyd's life include his wife of 67 years, Ruth, Charles City; his "buddies," daughter Jean and her husband, Richard Lines, Nashua, and his son, Darwin and his wife, Nancy Jo Krumrey, Bella Vista, Ark; and three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jennifer and Jacque Krumrey; and one great-grandson, Cole Krumrey Still.

ALICE I. BENTTINE

OSAGE - Alice I. Benttine, 91, died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 833 Ash St., Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and will continue one hour before services at the church Tuesday.

Alice was born July 6, 1910, to Ludvig and Inger (Motland) Thompson in Worth County.

On June 6, 1928, she was united in marriage to Carl Benttine in Mason City. She spent her entire life in Worth and Mitchell County in the Little Cedar area. After her husband's death in 1951, she moved into Osage and spent the last nine and a half years as a resident of the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Alice is survived by four sons, Clayton Benttine of Riceville, LeRoy Benttine and his wife, Joanne, of Stacyville, Lester Benttine and his wife, Janice, of Osage, and Donald Benttine and his wife, Marianne, of Osage; 11 grandchildren and one step-grandchild; 15 great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; three gret-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Laura Bentten of Manly; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; two brothers, Theodore Thompson and Elmer Thompson; three sisters, Tillie Ogaard, Bertha Christiansen and Lena Young; and one grandson, Dennis Benttine in 1996.

CLARION - Mitchell "Mitch" Garrett Boen, 21, died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) at Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines, as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident.

ARTHUR DALE ARMSBURY

CLEAR LAKE-Arthur Dale. Armsbury, 90, died Wednesday (Oct. 31, 2001) at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Memorial services will held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Rev. Thomas Healey of First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, officiating.

Visitation will be one hour before the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Art was born June 8, 1911, in Mason City. He graduated from Clear Lake High School, Mason City Junior College and attended Iowa State College, Ames. While at Iowa State he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Art moved to New Jersey where he worked for Crucible Steel. He married Neva Ruby McGowan onNov. 3, 1934, in Indiana, Pa. He later worked for Brinks Armored Car Services. They moved back to Clear Lake in 1945 where they owned Art's Vending Service and Armsbury Cottages on North Shore Drive for more than thirty years.

Art enjoyed being out on the lake, hunting, fishing and boat racing. He was a member of Clear Lake Gun Club, Ventura Gun Club, Life Member of N.R.A, IOOF Lodge, Iowa State Trap Shooting Association, American Trap Shooting Association, Midwest Power Boat Association, Ducks Unlimited and C.I.O. and A.F.L. Union.

Art is survived by his daughter, Anna Dale McClaskey and her husband, Norman, Fairport, New York; two grandchildren, Kimberly Ann Miller and her husband, Greg, and Melinda Sue Farina and her husband, Tom; five great grandchildren, Amanda Miller, Mary-Margaret Miller, Dean Miller, Thomas Farina Jr. and Michael Farina; and a sister-in-law, Pat McGowan, Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mae Goodwin; wife Neva; and grandson, Brendan Dale McClaskey.

CLEAR LAKE - Jean L. Barnes, 68, of 1005 Third Ave. S., died Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake, with Rev. David Wiersbe officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.

Jean was born in rural Cerro Gordo County on her grandparents' farm, the daughter of Charles and Elsie (Pals) Rickard. She graduated from Clear Lake High in 1951 and continued her education at Trinity Bible College, Chicago, Ill.

Jean moved back to Clear Lake where she was a volunteer for Opportunity Village for five years after which she managed the Opportunity Village Store retiring in 1998 after twenty-five years.

Jean enjoyed crocheting, knitting, going on many bus trips and volunteering for many organizations. She was saved at an early age, led a strong Christian life and was a charter member of Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake.

Jean is survived by her two sons, Stan Barnes and his wife, Karla, and their daughter, Karmen, Owatonna, Minn., and Lonny Barnes and his wife, Diane, Iowa Falls, Iowa; one sister Lois Meier and her husband, Martin, Swaledale; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

MARY MIROWSKI

HOLBROOK, Mass. - Mary Mirowski, 76, of Holbrook, formerly of Dorchester, died Friday (Nov. 2, 2001) from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Funeral services were held 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Christ the King Ukranian Orthodox Church in Boston.

Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Joseph Mirowski of Mason City, Iowa, his wife, Linda, and their children Matthew, Thomas and Nicole; and James J. Mirowski of North Weymouth, Mass., and a daughter, Jeanne Sumner of Holbrook.

Mary Mirowski was preceded in death by her husband, James Mirowski; two sons, Stephen and Charles; and one daughter Kathleen.

Cartwright Funeral Home, Holbrook, was in charge of arrangements.
