MASON CITY - Kenneth J. Lee, 68, of Mason City, died Friday (May 25, 2001) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

PATRICK D. KERNES

CHARLES CITY - Partrick D. Kernes, 39, of 1215 Cleveland Ave. died Friday (May 25, 2001) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek, of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. on Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday.

LYLE SCHULTZ

RICEVILLE - Lyle Schultz, 88, of Riceville, passed away Thursday (May 24, 2001) at the Riceville Community Rest Home in Riceville.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday May 29, 2001, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Michael Parris officiating. A graveside committal service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at North Prairie Cemetery in rural Lake Mills.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville.

Lyle was born Aug. 18, 1912, in Marble Rock, the son of George and Bessie Wagner Shultz. He was united in marriage to Leona Groth on June 30, 1938, at Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in rural Elma. He was engaged in farming most of his life and he was a mechanic for International Harvester.

He married Myrtle Brackey on March 12, 1960, at North Prairie Church in Lake Mills.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Borchardt and her husband, Del, of Riceville; one son, Leland Shultz and his wife, Sandra, of Panama City, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Alice Wehner, of Albert Lea, Minn., and Helen Allison and her husband, Kent, of Albert Lea, Minn.; and two stepsons, Duane Brackey and his wife Arlys, of Lake Mills, and Parnell Brackey and his wife, Marjorie, of Emmons, Minn.; eight stepgrandchildren, 21 stepgreat-grandchildren, and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Leona Schreiber, on December 23, 2000, and his wife Myrtle T. Schultz on Feb. 12, 1994; and one sister, Audrey Baldwin.

MASON CITY - Ruth L. Shire, 85, of 104 22nd St. S. E., died Thursday (May 24, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held at Noon Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S. E., Mason City. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a 7 p.m. Scripture wake service.

BELMOND - A memorial Liturgy of the Word for James Leland McVey Jr., 69, of Alexander, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond.

ROY CAMPBELL

OTTUMWA - Roy Campbell, 66, of 209 Oakwood Ave., died at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday (May 24, 2001) at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

He was born Oct. 24, 1934, in Iowa City to William and Evelyn Olson Campbell.

He married Joyce Albert on Dec. 31, 1953, in Oakland, Calif.

A resident of Mason City until 1973 when he moved to Ottumwa, he worked for State Brand Creamery in Mason City, also for Hormel in Ottumwa, and retired as maintenance supervisor at Excel in Ottumwa in February of 2000.

He was a member of the Assemblies of God Church.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce; four daughters, Arleen Ogden, Linda Randall and Cathy Bradley, all of Ottumwa, and Angie Sprenger, of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister, Pat Harriott, of Florida; and two brothers, the Rev. Harry Campbell, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Tom Hinch, of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Paul Hinch; and a brother, Jim Campbell.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Reece Funeral Home, 607 E. Second St., Ottumwa. Cremation will follow the services.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday at Reece Funeral Home, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Honorary pallbearers will be Herb Ogden, Paul Randall, Dan Bradley and Joe Sprenger.

GRETCHEN BURKART

MASON CITY - Gretchen Burkart, 84, 111 S. Tennessee Ave., died Wednesday (May 23, 2001) at Hospice of North Iowa. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of her family and the many people she touched.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

The family requests that any donations be made to the Gretchen Burkart Memorial Fund.

Gretchen was born on March 7, 1917, in Mason City to John and Edna Fulghum Bohning. She graduated from Clear Lake High School, Mason City Junior College and Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines. It was in Des Moines that she met and later married Al Burkart on June 26, 1943.

After successfully raising four children, she worked as a legal secretary for Finley, Teas and Esser until retirement in 1996.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the K B Circle.

She was a caring, generous, and strong-spirited woman who loved spending time with family and friends, traveling with Al, bridge club and genealogy.

She is survived by her dedicated husband of almost 58 years, Al; children, John (wife Barbara) Burkart, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Terry Burkart, of DeForest, Wis., Mickey (wife Ann) Burkart, of Liberty Township, Ohio, and Julie True, of Mason City. Also surviving are a sister, Gladys Jones, of Indianapolis, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Jackson Burkart, Matt Burkart (wife Kim), Jill Burkart, and Stephanie, Eric (wife Tara), Sara, Stacey, Shawn and Shelby True; plus three great-grandchildren, Garrette, Blake and Reese True.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Rollin; and two grandchildren, Christopher and Amanda.

HELEN M. GAST

GARNER - Helen M. Gast, 84, of Garner, died Friday (May 25, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller, with the Rev. Owen Gaasedelen officiating. Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services on Sunday at the church.

Helen Mae Gast, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Gruben) Johnson, was born Dec. 17, 1916. She attended country school north of Garner.

On Sept. 20, 1936, she was married to Kenneth W. Gast at her parent's home north of Garner. They farmed east of Miller until 1968 when they retired and moved into Garner. Helen worked at Concord Care Center for 17 years. The past few years she resided at Prairie View Apartments before moving to Concord Care Center in December of 2000.

She loved gardening, sewing, fishing, camping, knitting, crocheting and doing crossword puzzles.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Miller where she taught Sunday school and started the Cradle Roll graduation for children when they reached Sunday school age. She was also a 4-H leader.

Helen is survived by her two daughters, Judy Ambroson and her husband, Vance, of Leland, and Pamela Rhineberger and her husband, Rodney, of Salina, Kan.; a daughter-in-law, Judy Lowmaster of Bemidji, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a twin brother, Herbert Johnson and his wife, Elaine, of Rockford, Ill.; a brother, Delos Johnson and his wife, Clara, of Ft. Madison; a sister, Annabell Hermanson, of Lake Mills; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, April 14, 1987; her son, Roger Gast, June 23, 1987; her parents; a daughter-in-law, Connie Gast; two brothers and four sisters.

LOLA HEIMDAL

FOREST CITY - Lola Heimdal,78, of Forest City, died Wednesday (May 23, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills, with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will be in Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery in rural Lake Mills.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

Lola Marie Heimdal was born in Latimer, on April 11, 1923, the daughter of Evert and Marie (Neve) Carter. As a young child she moved with her family to a farm near Elmer, Mo., where she attended school. The family later moved to Sheffield.

Lola married S. Herbert Heimdal in Owatonna, Minn., on March 27, 1949. The couple spent many years on the family farm in Forest City.

Lola was a member of Winnebago Lutheran Church and active in circle.

She enjoyed camping with her husband, knitting and her flowers. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lola is survived by her husband, S. Herbert Heimdal, of Forest City; three children, Gary Heimdal and his wife, Noreen, of Lake Mills, Linda James and her husband, Don, of Forest City, and Thomas H. Heimdal, of San Diego, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Eudema Smith, of Portland, Ore.; two brothers and their spouses, Everett Daryle Carter and Jackie, of Brantley, Ala. and Ernest and Shirley Carter of Andalusia, Ala.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, two sisters and a son, Gerald.

MASON CITY - Ruth L. Shire, 85, of 104 22nd St. S.E, died Thursday (May 24, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Ruth L. Shire was born April 21, 1916, in Pawnee, Missouri, the daughter of Jay and Ida (Tripp) Peek. She graduated from Eagleville High School, Eagleville, Mo. Ruth moved to Mason City where she attended Hamilton Business College.

She married Daniel H. Shire Jr. June 27, 1944, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City. She worked as a ticket agent at the Jefferson Bus Depot and part-time at the Mason City Shopper. Ruth was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel H. Shire, Mason City; son, Daniel J. Shire and wife, Judy, of Nisswa, Minn.; daughter, Sandra S. Bode and husband, Steven, of Algona; four grandchildren, Jason O'Donnell and fiance', Juliet Kolb, of Mason City, Heather Curley and husband, Bradley, of Mason City, Brook Ferrian and husband, Kirk, of Brainerd, Minn. and Erin Shire, of Nisswa, Minn.; four step-grandchildren, Kevin Boeder and wife, Angela, of Brainerd, Minn., Brenda Boeder, of Mt. Shasta, Calif., and Ryan and Ashley Bode, of Des Moines; great grandchildren, Jenica, Natasha and Ethan Ferrian, Shaylea and Jase Curley; and step-great-grandchildren, Brittney, Mikayla and Mikinze Boeder and Trinity Burke.

ST. ANSGAR - Maurine Moore, 87, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday (May 26, 2001) at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in St. Ansgar with the Rev. Ted Stowers officiating. Burial will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, 207 South School St., St. Ansgar.

Maurine was born March 14, 1914, in Otranto Township, Mitchell County, the daughter of Marian and Cecelia (Hansen) Jensen. She attended school in Otranto and graduated from Carpenter High School in 1932. She attended college in Cedar Falls and graduated with a B.A. degree in education from Wartburg College. Maurine taught elementary school for 45 years, mostly in Otranto and later in St. Ansgar. She enjoyed participating in various community and church activities, some of which were Alpha Delta Kappa, Retired Teachers Association, St. Ansgar Women's Club and her church circle. Hand piecing quilts was her hobby and passion during retirement.

She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn (Jack) Edgington, Sheri (Bob) McNutt, and Judy (David) Goplerud, all of St. Ansgar; seven grandchildren, Chris and wife, Vanessa, Alex and Elizabeth Edgington, Tom and wife, Melissa, Larissa, Bridgette, Samantha, and Abagail Edgington, Anne and husband, Jim and Stephanie and Matthew McMillan; Greg and wife, Kaye, Kaitlyn and Hannah Goplerud, Kari and husband, Russ, Jordan and Gayle Nelson, Matt and wife, Jennifer and Megan McNutt; Heidi and husband, Jeff Kaisand; brothers, Art and Evelyn and Clarence and Wylma Jensen; sisters, Edna Beuerman and Helene Johnson; sisters-in-law, Della Jensen and Ruth Jensen; many nieces and nephews.

Diane Mitchell, associate pastor of the Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City with a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

MASON CITY - David E. Smith, 91, of 4 Third St. N.W., died Saturday (May 26, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Mason City, with the Rev. Richard Scheerer officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial to the First Congregational United Church of Christ or Hospice of North Iowa.

TOMY DRABEK

BRITT - Tomy Drabek, 83, of Britt, passed away Sunday (May 27, 2001) at his home.

A funeral service for Tomy Drabek will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery at Duncan.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt, and one hour prior to the services at the church. A Catholic Workmen Rosary Service will be held 7 p.m. followed by a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Tomy, the son of James and Frances Wellik Drabek was born at home in Britt on March 5, 1918. He attended schools in the Duncan and Hayfield areas. Tomy worked with his dad and brothers for Drabek and Sons Construction prior to the war. He served in the United States Navy as an Aviation Mechanic with the Fleet Air Wing 4 during World War II. Following his discharge in 1945, he returned to work with R.R. Johnston Construction, Mason City, and prior to his 1981 retirement he was employed by Curries Manufacturing in Mason City.

Tomy was united in marriage with Elaine Carman on Oct. 18, 1945, in Hutchinson, Kan. Shortly after they made their home in Britt and remained there for their 54 years of marriage. Tomy was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, and Catholic Workman Branch #51 of Duncan. He enjoyed woodworking and tinkering in his shop.

Tomy is survived by a son, Donald and wife, Robbie, of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter, Pamela and husband, Steve Burger, of Kennewick, Wash., three grandchildren, Jennifer, of Cedar Rapids, Tony, of Sumner, and Sarah, of Kennewick, Wash., two sisters, Marie Hejlik, of Rockwell, and Clara Malek and husband, Ernie of Britt; one brother, Bill Drabek, of Columbus, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine, his daughter, Renee, his parents, infant brother, James Jr., two sisters, Rose Ward and Helen Townsend, and four brothers, Frank, Raymond, George and Jim Drabek.

Kenneth J. Lee was born Sept. 9, 1932, the son of Gordon and Fannie (Ebbenga) Lee in Mason City. He attended Mason City public schools and later graduated from Mason City High School in the Class of 1950. Ken went on to college, earning his industrial engineering certificate.

Ken was a self-employed manufacturing consultant and in recent years managed several rental properties. He thrived on purchasing and renovating properties from the inside out. Ken was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and could often be found watching or listening to the game. He was very active in different civic affairs and local politics including his second ward seat on the Mason City City Council. Ken was first elected to the council in 1993 and re-elected in 1997. He was a member of the Masonic Benevolence Lodge 145, Scottish Rite of Cedar Rapids, El Kahir Shrine, and the Royal Order of Jesters.

MASON CITY - Marie Barbara Hildman, 70, of Mason City, died Friday (May 25, 2001) at her home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manly, with the Rev. Thomas McAndrew officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Wesley.

Marie Barbara Hildman was born on May 7, 1931, in Duncan, the daughter of Frank and Barbara (Busta) Hadacek. She attended and received her education in the rural country schools near Duncan, graduating from Garner High School in 1949. After completing her schooling she worked for a lawyer in Forest City.

She was united in marriage to Donald Hildman on Oct. 8, 1960, in Duncan. Marie worked as a mortgage clerk for 35 years at the First National Bank (Norwest) in Mason City until her retirement in 1987. After her retirement from First National Bank, she worked as a mortgage clerk for Aapple Mortgage in Mason City for several years, and as a clerk for summer delivery of the U.S. West phone books for four years. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, baking, collecting cookbooks, entering crocheting and baking contests in the fair, gardening, and bird watching, but her great love and enjoyment was her husband, children, grandchildren, and extended family and friends. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Plymouth, St. Michael's Catholic Church Guild, and was also a member of Credit Women's International.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Donald Hildman, Mason City; two daughters, Jean Hildman, Mason City, and Ann Lampe and her husband, Douglas of Waterloo; two grandchildren, Marcus and Allison Lampe, both of Waterloo; two sisters, Cecilia O'Day and her husband, Jim, of Port Richey, Fla., and Rita Dukeshier, of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a brother, Francis Hadacek and his wife, Luann, of Mason City; several nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister who died in infancy, and three brothers, Leo, Donald and Cletus Hadacek.

ST. ANSGAR - Maurine Moore, 87, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday (May 26, 2001) at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Maurine was born March 14, 1914, in Otranto Township, Mitchell County, the daughter of Marion and Cecelia (Hansen) Jensen. She attended school in Otranto and graduated from Carpenter High School in 1932. She attended college in Cedar Falls and graduated with a B.A. degree in education from Wartburg College. Maurine taught elementary school for 45 years, mostly in Otranto and later in St. Ansgar. She enjoyed participating in various community and church activities, some of which were Alpha Delta Kappa, Retired Teachers Association, St. Ansgar Women's Club and her church circle. Hand piecing quilts was her hobby and passion during retirement.

LEONA PRIEBE

KLEMME - Leona Priebe, honored for her community service by former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, and a life-long resident of the Klemme area, died Saturday (May 26, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, after a long illness, at the age of 89.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme, with the Rev. Dona Buckman officiating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Tenold Funeral Home, Klemme and one hour prior to services at the church.

Leona was the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Roths) Buseman. She was born in Mason City on March 27, 1912, and moved as a small child to the Klemme area, where she lived her entire life. She was more recently a resident of the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

She was united in marriage to Albert Priebe on May 27, 1931, at the Klemme Evangelical and Reformed Church. Leona led an active life that included careers of farming and real-estate brokerage, which she shared with her late husband. Always interested in print media, she edited and published a homemakers' magazine and often did "job printing" of cookbooks and church publications. With developed skills as a photographer, she for many years was a member of the Mason City Camera Club. For a time she also sold "advertising specialty" items.

Leona was publicly honored by Gov. Branstad n 1990 for her "outstanding volunteer services." Until her illness necessitated her moving to Oakwood, Leona continued to visit confined friends and on many days drove people to appointments. Sundays often saw gatherings of the extended family at her Klemme home, with Leona providing a warm welcome and her delicious meals. Leona was a member of the Clear Lake Women's Club, North Iowa Women's Shrine Auxiliary, Klemme Grandmothers Clubs, several garden clubs and the Doreas Circle at the Klemme United Church of Christ. Many will treasure her many gifts of crocheted afghans, quilts and a variety of other handwork. A host of friends mourn her passing, but celebrate her long life.

She is survived by her three daughters, Luella (Jim) Bonner, of Clear Lake, Lucille (John Dick) Gaffney, of Swaledale, and Miriam (Eugene) Jaberg, of Fridley, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Randy and Edward Gaffney, Mark, Steven, Douglas Ames; Nancy Johnson, Scott, Beth, David Jaberg; 12 great-grandchildren, Catherine, Terra, Sarah, Angela, Benjamin Gaffney, Jeremy, Jennifer, Tanya, Jenna Ames, Greg Nieman, Merielle and Cherilyn Schafer; one great-great-grandchild, Bridget Gaffney; and a sister-in-law, Betty Buseman, of Clear Lake.

FERTILE - Margaret (Peggy) I. Ouverson, age 80, of Fertile, died Friday (May 25, 2001) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Margaret (Peggy) I. Ouverson was born in Graceville, Minn., on July 20, 1920, the daughter of George and Serena (Ouverson) Giddings. She received her education in Graceville schools.

She married Amos A. Ouverson and the couple lived in Fertile, where they built a home after World War II. Peggy worked as a medical technologist and radiology technician and was employed at the Forest City Community Hospital for 25 years. After retiring, she worked as the Silver Advantage Coordinator for several years. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Forest City.

Peggy is survived by a foster son, Marvin Erickson of Wayzata, Minn.; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters and a brother.

MASON CITY - Barbara J. Holzman, 74, of 64 Country Circle, died Friday afternoon (May 25, 2001) at Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

The funeral will be held at 11:30 am Thursday at the Adas Israel Synagogue, 620 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with Rabbi Abraham Ettedgui of Minneapolis, officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Barbara J. Holzman was born on Feb. 24, 1927, at Menasha, Wis., the daughter of Boyd and Mable Ada (Demeny) Collins. Following the death of her mother later that year, she was raised and treated as a daughter by her mother's sister, Myrtle Demeny. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Menasha and in 1949 she moved to Milwaukee.

She was united in marriage to Sam Holzman on June 17th in Milwaukee. In 1964, they moved to Mason City where they owned and operated Central States Auto Auction. After Sam's death in 1983, she operated the business until her retirement in 1995.

Barb was an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society, Community Concert Association, the North Iowa Medical Center and served as the president of its auxiliary. She also served on the boards of the YWCA, her synagogue as the chairperson, was the past president of the Hoover School, was a volunteer for the RISE program and was a room mother. She also served as the secretary-treasurer for the National Auto Auction Association, MidWest Zone.

She and Sam loved to travel to the association meetings; she enjoyed reading and working with the Democratic National Committee.

Those thankful in sharing Barbara's life include her two children, Beth M. Holzman and her husband Noel Castellands, and their three children, Talia, Yael, and Rina, all from Washington DC, her son Michael J. and his wife, Angela Holzman, and son Khole, all of Mason City; along with many friends and family both here in Mason City and in Wisconsin.

William F. Adams

GREENE - Memorial services for William F. Adams, 68, of 2823 Packard Ave. in Greene, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock, with Pastor Marjorie Bradshaw officiating. Private inurnment services will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in rural Greene.

There will be no visitation as it was Bill's last request that his body be cremated.

William F. Adams was born Jan. 28, 1933, in rural Osage, Mitchell County, a son of Charles Anton and Sadie (Pfliger) Adams and died Sunday (May 27, 2001) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City of cancer.

He received his education in the rural Mitchell County Schools and as a young man he was employed by Foth Plumbing and Heating in Osage where he learned that trade.

On Dec. 28, 1951, he was united in marriage to Joan Gosselin at the Little Cedar Methodist Church near Osage. In 1958 the family moved to Greene where he was employed by Max Heidenwirth for a short time before going out on his own as a plumber, furnace installer and air conditioning repairman.

In 1976 the family moved to Lineville and later North English where he became engaged in dairy farming and also owned the Chatterbox Café and Laundromat both in North English. During this time he was also engaged in the plumbing business.

In 1993 the family returned to the Greene area where he was employed by Gil White Plumbing and Heating in Charles City until his health forced him to retire in 1996.

Bill will be remembered for his love of country music and playing the guitar, especially in those special "jam sessions" with his friends in the area. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, camping and just being outside. He enjoyed his dogs and training horses to ride.

He was baptized a member of the United Methodist Church in Little Cedar, served as a trustee of the United Methodist Church in North English and was currently a member of the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock. He was a member of the Rotary Club in North English and a former scoutmaster.

Those thankful for having shared his life include his loving wife, Joan, of Greene; five sons and their spouses, Rick (Mary) Adams, of Hubbard, Mike (Toyla) Adams, of Springfield, Mo., Mark (Penny) Adams, of Charles City, Tom (Carrie) Adams, of Loveland, Colo., and Joel (Melissa) Adams, of Ottumwa; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Vivian Orman, of Mason City, Jenevieve Walters, of Osage, Geraldine Johnson, of Waterloo, and Mildred Valasek, of Osage; two brothers, Charles Adams, of Arjo, Ariz., and Richard Adams, of Waterloo; and several nieces and nephews.

Oscar Charles Tindall was born on Nov. 1, 1930, in Carbon, to James W. and Edna A. Ernst Tindall. After attending schools in Nebraska and Iowa, Oscar graduated from Corwith High School in 1949.

Oscar enlisted in the Air Force and served his country from 1951 to 1955. He served several stations including the Korean War.

On Oct. 2, 1955, Oscar was married to Sylvia Lottick in Orlando, Fla. To this union three sons were born.

Oscar returned to the Corwith area and spent the rest of his life farming. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the Elmer Wilson American Legion Post No. 229 in Corwith.

An avid fisherman, he enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren and friends. He also enjoyed gardening, planting flowers and spending time with his family and friends.

Oscar died suddenly from a heart attack at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt at the age of 70.

Oscar is survived by his wife, Sylvia, of Corwith; his sons, Ken Tindall and his wife, Jana, of Aurora, Ill., Charles Tindall, of Corwith, and David Tindall and his wife, Connie, of Algona. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Derek, Hannah, Dustin, Devin and Andrew. Oscar is also survived by his mother, Edna Tindall; his sister, Natalie Shipman and her husband, Bob; his brother, Duane Tindall and his sister-in-law, Beverly Tindall, all of Corwith.

Oscar was preceded in death by his father, James Tindall Sr.; his brother, James Tindall Jr.; and a nephew, Timothy Shipman.

MASON CITY - Gladys A. "Schultz" Robey, 87, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died on Monday (May 14, 2001) at the Heritage Care Center.

Gladys A. Schultz Robey was born on Oct. 23, 1913, in Hanlontown, the daughter of Soren and Live (Kassa) Nelson. She attended schools in Hanlontown.

She was united in marriage to Harold Schultz on Oct. 21, 1931, in Hanlontown. Together they helped her parents farm in the Hanlontown area for several years.

Following her parents' death, they moved to the Mason City area, where they both worked in sales. They later moved to La Crosse, Wis., where she worked as an assistant supervisor for the Mode-o-Day stores. During her career at Mode-o-Day she was able to see much of the country by traveling to new stores and helping them open.

In 1963 she moved to Washington, D.C., where she met and married Joseph Robey. They lived there for many years. Following his death, she moved to Mason City to be closer to family.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

She loved to cook and, while living at the Manor for a number of years, enjoyed sharing her various dishes with her neighbors and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Stanley H. Paul Calvin Veldhouse, the son of Nick and Laura (Pehl) Veldhouse, was born Nov. 3, 1910, at Holmes. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a pharmacy degree.

He was united in marriage to Florence Mason in May 1936, and they would have celebrated 65 years of marriage on the day Paul died at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Paul and his brother Jim ran the Goodell Elevator for a few years before Paul began farming north of Goodell. He farmed for a number of years with his son-in-law, Bob Stille. He worked for the USDA sealing and resealing corn. Paul and Florence built a new home in Goodell in 1947, and continued to live there until they entered the Belmond Health Care Center. He also built a cabin in Clear Lake, where they lived for a time. They loved to travel and pull their camper trailer. Paul liked listening to country music and learned to play the guitar. What was very important to him was spending time with his wife, daughter and granddaughters. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Goodell.

BOONE - James Frakes, 64, of Boone died Sunday (May 27, 2001) at his home.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 1, at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone, with the Rev. Clem Currans officiating.

Private graveside services and burial will be Friday afternoon in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone.

James Frakes was born on Aug. 9, 1936, in Eagle Grove, the son of John and Ruth (Penfield) Frakes. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1954 and Eagle Grove Junior College in 1958.

He married Janette Griffith in Fort Dodge on Oct. 10, 1959. In the early 1960s he served with the Iowa National Guard in Eagle Grove.

He spent his working career of 43 years with Fareway Stores Inc. In earlier years, he was an assistant manager and manager at several stores throughout Iowa. In 1970, he was hired as grocery buyer for the Fareway corporate offices in Boone, where he had lived since 1971. In 1989, he became a member of the board of directors and in 1996 he became the director of wholesale purchasing. He retired from Fareway Stores Inc. in 1998. After he retired, he was a part-time bus driver for Boone County Transportation.

His hobbies included golfing and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his father and his wife.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Paul Sebring, of Davenport, and Diane and Eugene Julius, of Mason City; his mother, Ruth Ely, of Eagle Grove; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Judy Frakes, of Eagle Grove; one sister and brother-in-law, Arneda and Dr. Bruce Toillion, of Spokane, Wash.; his mother-in-law, Nell Griffith, of Rockwell City; four grandchildren, Kathryn and Audrey Sebring and Alan and Ryan Julius.

Friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. on Thursday at Schroeder Memorial Chapel in Boone, with a vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 8 until 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel.

DES MOINES - Carlisle H. Stoecker, 67, of 1005 40th St. in Des Moines, died Monday (May 28, 2001) at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

MASON CITY - Lawrence A. Schaer, 74, passed away Monday (May 28, 2001) at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City, after a long illness with cancer and Parkinson's disease.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Thomas Healey, Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel and will continue one hour before service time on Thursday.

Lawrence A. Schaer was born on Oct. 1, 1926, the son of John and Sophia (Smith) Schaer, on the family farm near Rockwell. Lawrence attended school in Mason City.

On Oct. 28, 1944, Lawrence married Gwendolyn Harriott at Austin, Minn. He served in the United States Army as a sergeant during World War II and was stationed in the Philippine Islands and Korea. Lawrence was honorably discharged in August 1946. After the service, Lawrence and Gwen made their home on a farm north of Clear Lake, where Lawrence farmed and had dairy cattle for 8 years. He retired because of ill health.

Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn, of Mason City; one son, Larry D. Schaer, of Mason City; two daughters, Cheryl Glenn, of Longmont, Colo., and Amy Kuhlers and her husband, Chad, of Pond Creek, Okla.; three grandchildren, Shelly Schaer, Heather Glenn and Christopher Kuhlers; a great- grandson, Jacob Jones; brother, Lloyd Schaer, of Mason City; and three sisters, Luella Whitt, Iona Johnson and Henrietta Cahalan, all of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

GREENE - The funeral for Fonda M. Ebling, 64, of 302 N. Fourth St., Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Greene with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, and will continue on Friday one hour prior to services at the church.

Fonda Mae Worley was born Dec. 9, 1936, in rural Butler County, a daughter of Hubert and Lola (Kanter) Worley, and went peacefully to be with her Lord on Tuesday (May 29, 2001) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

She received her education at the Bennezette No. 9 country school and graduated from Greene High School in 1955. Her growing years were spent on a farm north of Aredale. While growing up she was active in 4-H and later became a 4-H leader. She was involved in her church youth group and Sunday school at the Aredale West Fork Evangelical United Brethren Church.

On Sept. 11, 1955, she was united in marriage to Darwin Ebling at the Aredale United Methodist Church. Fonda was a homemaker and in partnership with her husband in farming on the family farm east of Aredale. They moved into their home in Greene the fall of 1991.

As a reflection of her love for Jesus, Fonda was faithfully involved in her church, serving many capacities in the United Methodist Women, in the circle, and on church committee. Music was special in Fonda's life. She enjoyed being in the church choir and was instrumental in new choir robes being purchased.

Whether it was furnishing food prepared in love, delivering meals to shut-ins, serving in the church kitchen, or being a caring supportive friend, Fonda was actively involved in her church fellowship.

She will be remembered for her special, beautiful pies, as well as other delicious dishes. Fonda was a member of the Farm Bureau and held various offices.

Those thankful for sharing her life and her Christian faith include her husband, Darwin Ebling, of Green; three daughters and their spouses, Dienna and Les Schafer, of Greene, Jody and Kenny Wunsch, of Marshalltown, and Sheila and Bob Atkinson, of Bristow; two sons, David and Vanessa Ebling, of Bristow, and Doug and his fiancée, Deb DeBerg, of Greene; 19 grandchildren, Danny, James, Seth, and Elizabeth Ebling, Jacob, Lucas, and Lydia Schafer, Jennifer, Meagen, Danielle, Madalyn, and Spencer Ebling, Jason, Tiffany, and Becca Wunsch, Jani and Chris Breu, Jeremy, Joy and Stefanie Atkinson; and one great-granddaughter, Alexis Breu. Fonda was a devoted grandmother and enjoyed her grandchildren. Also thankful for her life are Fonda's siblings and their spouses, brother, Donavon and Marion Worley, of Aredale; sisters, Joyce and Gerald Krukow, of Mason City, and Edie and Don Hodges, of Marshalltown; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; friends and neighbors.

RUTH PRYOR

FOREST CITY - Ruth Pryor, 87, of Forest City, died Tuesday (May 29, 2001) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Her body was cremated and private services will be held at a later date.

Ruth V. Pryor was born in Minden, on Aug. 13, 1913, the daughter of Louis and Dora (Halm) Beebe. She graduated from Minden High School in 1930 and was married to George Pryor in 1936. She and George initially lived in Omaha, Neb., and George was a W.W. II veteran.

They moved to Palm Springs, Calif., in the mid 1950s, where George was involved in real estate and banking and Ruth was a dental assistant.

She was involved in a number of clubs and activities in Palm Springs and was an avid golfer. George died in 1981. Ruth's health began to fail and in 1998 she retired to Iowa to be near her family.

Ruth is survived by a brother, Verne and his wife, Vera, of Minden; nephews, Raymond Beebe, of Forest City, Richard Beebe, of Denver, Colo., David Beebe, of Portland, Ore., and Kent Beebe, of Minden; and nieces, Joan Bredehoft, of Columbus, Neb., and Annelle Beebe, of Ventura, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brothers, Joseph and Glen.

CHARLES CITY - Deborah J. (Mrs. Dennis) Nehls, 237 West Franklin, Denver, formerly of Charles City, died Tuesday (May 29, 2001) at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

A funeral Mass for Deborah J. Nehls will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with a rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil Scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to Mass on Saturday at the church.

Deborah Jean Paine Nehls was born July 5, 1949, at Mason City, the daughter of Roy and Shirley (Steinlich) Paine. She graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1967.

On Feb. 4, 1967, she was united in marriage to Dennis Nehls at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City.

During her career she was a supervisor for Hardees in Charles City, Oak Creek, Wis., and Waverly.

Deborah enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, and playing bingo.

Living family members include her husband, Dennis, of Denver; a son, Ray and his wife, Toni Nehls, of Charles City; a daughter, Angela and her husband, John Hamilton, of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren; and four sisters and their husbands, Cindy and Jerry Rasmus, of Destrehan, La., Barb and Loren Mahnesmith, of Nora Springs, Julie and David Underriner, of St. Ansgar, and Susan and Scott Wilde, of Grafton.

CLEAR LAKE - Mercene E. Buck, 90, died Tuesday (May 29, 2001) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Mercene was born on Sept. 18, 1910, the daughter of Ole and Maude (Thomas) Ingebritson in Dows.

In 1928 Mercene was united in marriage to Clyde Buck and they continued to live in Mason City.

Mercene was a member of the First Christian Church in Mason City and a past member of Tina Rebekah Lodge.

Her true joy in life was taking care of her family, friends and one little friend of 17 years named Molly. Molly was a poodle that would accompany Mercene on her long walks until she was too tired, leaving Mercene to carry her home.

At the age of 65 Mercene could be found mowing her lawn, sewing for others, quilting and making afghans.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Bonnie Simon and her husband, Arnold, of Clear Lake; one granddaughter, Laurie Jilek and her husband, Robert, of St. Peters, Mo.; three great-grandchildren, Tad, Collin and Madison Jilek, of St. Peters, Mo.; two step-grandchildren, Patricia Brinkman, of Clear Lake, and Gene Simon, of Calmar; and a special friend, Merle Tatum, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde, in 1973; two brothers, Kenneth and Floyd Ingebritson; and one brother-in-law, Raymond Buck.

GLADYS A. 'SCHULTZ' ROBEY

MASON CITY - Gladys A. "Schultz" Robey, 87, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died on Monday (May 14, 2001) at the Heritage Care Center.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until time of services today at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church for World Hunger.

Gladys A. Schultz Robey was born on Oct. 23, 1913, in Hanlontown, the daughter of Soren and Live (Kassa) Nelson. She attended schools in Hanlontown.

She was united in marriage to Harold Schultz on Oct. 21, 1931, in Hanlontown. Together they helped her parents farm in the Hanlontown area for several years.

Following her parents' death, they moved to the Mason City area, where they both worked in sales. They later moved to La Crosse, Wis., where she worked as an assistant supervisor for the Mode-o-Day stores. During her career at Mode-o-Day she was able to see much of the country by traveling to new stores and helping them open.

In 1963 she moved to Washington, D.C., where she met and married Joseph Robey. They lived there for many years. Following his death, she moved to Mason City to be closer to family.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

She loved to cook and, while living at the Manor for a number of years, enjoyed sharing her various dishes with her neighbors and friends.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Stanley H. Schultz and his wife, Diane, of Valencia, Calif.; grandchildren, Randy Schultz and his wife, Kathy, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Stephanie Schultz, of San Francisco, Calif., Sherrie Vels and her husband, Daniel, of Squgus, Calif., and Stephen Schultz and his wife, Mary, of Valencia, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Jason and Christopher Vels; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, a sister, Lillie Mostrom, and a brother, Selmer Nelson.
