MERLE D. ARENDS

CLEAR LAKE - Merle D. Arends, 79, of 3714 N. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, Iowa died Wednesday (May 9, 2001) at the Humboldt Hospital, Humboldt, Iowa.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2001 at the United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. The graveside service will be held the same day at 3 p.m. at the Union Cemetery in Humboldt.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St, Clear Lake.

Memorials may be directed to the Merle D. Arends Memorial Fund.

Merle was born March 23, 1922 in Grundy Center, Iowa, the son of Peter and Grace (Hook) Arends. He graduated from Dike High School and served in the United States Army during World War II.

Merle was united in marriage to Eleanor Nelson on Feb. 21, 1943 in Goldfield, Iowa. He worked as a car salesman for many years, first in Waterloo, then Humboldt and finally in Cedar Rapids. Merle then began to develop real estate in the Clear Lake area, later working as a realtor for Lake Realty until his retirement.

Merle enjoyed golfing, hunting, spending time on Clear Lake, and wintering in Florida with his wife. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and sports fan. He especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports through the years.

Merle was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church and several church committees.

Merle will be greatly missed by his wife, Eleanor, of Clear Lake, his son, Dale Arends and his wife, Paula, of Humboldt, their two children, Amy Wichman and her husband, Jim, and their daughter, Emma Kate, of Bettendorf, and Amanda Dyvig and her husband, Jeremy, of Clive; his son, Marc Arends and his wife, Linda, of Humboldt, and their two children, Alecia Johnson and her husband, Dr. Chris Johnson, of North Liberty and Abbey Arends and her fiancé, Ryan Harklau, of Humboldt; his son, Scott Arends and his wife, Anna, and their daughter, Ashley, all of Mason City; and his son Brad Arends and his wife, Kathy and their son, Andrew, all of Ft. Dodge; one brother, Grant Arends and his wife, Lucille, of Cedar Falls; two sisters, Irene Bird and her husband, Clyde, of Waterloo and Ruth Cessna of Rockford, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Violet Armstrong and her husband, Oscar.

CHARLES B. MOEN

MASON CITY - Charles B. Moen, 76, of 319 S. Maryland Ave., died Sunday (May 6, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A Celebration of Charles' Life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. David Anderson and the Rev. Ernest Thompson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be given to St. James Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa in lieu of flowers.

Charles B. Moen was born July 25, 1924, in Minneapolis, the son of Gerhardt and Mildred I. (Bailer) Moen. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, Minneapolis, and attended St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as well as the Korean Conflict, during which he received the Purple Heart.

Charles married Nancy B. Salmi on July 23, 1955, in Superior, Wis. Charles was superintendent for Merchantile Stores in Duluth, Minn., and Seattle, Wash. He also served as purchasing assistant for General Mills in Minneapolis and was purchasing agent for Glenwood Hills Hospital in Minneapolis for 10 years.

In 1967 he accepted a purchasing position with Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla. In 1968 he moved to Mason City to become purchasing agent at Mercy Hospital. He was director of purchasing for Mercy for 15 years, retiring in 1983.

Charles was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, National Association of Hospitals Purchasing Materials Management and International Materials Management Society. He received an award from the American Hospital Supply Co. for "Innovation in Hospital Data Interface."

Charles is survived by his wife, Nancy B. Moen, of Mason City; daughter, Robyn Lynn Kramer and her husband, Kevin, of Clear Lake; son, Frank G. Moen, of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandson, Kenneth "K.C." Kramer, of Clear Lake; granddaughter, Jade E. Moen, of Minneapolis, Minn.; former daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Babcock and husband, David, of Minneapolis, Minn.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents.

BELMOND - Edith M. Shahan, 85, of Belmond, died Wednesday (May 9, 2001) at Riverside Manor Nursing Home in Ames.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 14, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond, and at the church one hour before services.

ELAINE A. DOWNS

MASON CITY - Elaine A. Downs, 81, of Mason City, died Thursday (May 10, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City, with Father Carl Ries officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Wesley, with Father Dan Greving officiating.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City. A scriptural wake service will take place at 7 p.m. today at the chapel.

The family of Elaine Downs has requested that memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mason City.

Elaine A. (Studer) Downs was born on Oct. 18, 1919, in Wesley, in Kossuth County, the daughter of Alphonse and Isabelle (Haverly) Studer. She received her education in Wesley parochial and public schools.

On Dec. 27, 1937, Elaine was united in marriage to Edward Downs at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wesley. The couple made their home in Wesley until 1965, when they moved to Mason City. Edward passed away in 1967.

Elaine attended Hamilton College in Mason City to further her education. She worked at Gildner's for some time and then became a marketing researcher for Nielson's Rating Co.

Elaine was a choir member from her youth, and she played the organ for Mass for 20 years at Wesley, Iowa. Music was her life as she sang in the Farm Bureau Chorus in Algona, and also in the Sweet Adelines.

She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, a member of St. Cecilia's Guild, and Mason City Senior Citizens. She also enjoyed playing card games including bridge, canasta and 500.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Sharlene Reising and her husband, Jim, of Garner, Douglas Downs and his wife, Diane, of Eagan, Minn., Sylvia Baker and her husband, Art, of Lakeview, Ark., and Dan Downs and his wife, Janet, of Mt. Vernon, Wash.; 13 grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jerry, Nancy, Rhonda, David, Dean, Dennis, Brent, Sara, Rob, Angela, Elaina and Christian; 17 greatgrandchildren; five sisters, Phyllis Kelch, of Prairie du Chein, Wis., Rita Young, of Garner, Mae Haiden and her husband, Richard, of Mason City, Julie Jarvis, of Derby, Kan. and Rose Gerdes, of Britt; one brother, Gerald Studer and his wife, Kitty, of Mason City; a special friend, Frank Funk, of Mason City; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

BUFFALO CENTER - The funeral for Stuart Robert Wamsley, 45, of Buffalo Center, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Buffalo Center, with Father Leo Riley and Father Craig Steimel officiating. Inurnment will be in Rake Cemetery in Rake at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Buffalo Center, with a scriptural prayer service at 5 p.m. Further visitation will be held one hour before the Mass on Saturday at the church.

Stuart Robert Wamsley was born on Sept. 14, 1955, in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Robert and Mabel (Matheson) Wamsley. He grew up in Buffalo Center and graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1973 and then Jackson Technical School in Jackson, Minn.

Stuart worked as a plumber in Stewartville, Minn., for a short time until returning to Buffalo Center, where he was co-owner and operator of H & W Painting.

Stuart married Angela Claire (Wood) Glydwell on July 4, 1990, in Moline, Ill. Together they enjoyed renovating old buildings into new ones, especially the creamery building and their acreage.

Stuart was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, serving as an usher. He also was an active member of Pheasants Forever.

Stuart Robert Wamsley died on Wednesday (May 9, 2001) at the United Medical Center in Blue Earth, Minn., at the age of 45.

Stu is survived by his wife, Angela Wamsley, of Buffalo Center; his mother, Mabel Wamsley, of Buffalo Center; five children, Ryan Glydwell, of Mason City, Anthony Glydwell and his wife, Kerstin, of Fort Stuart, Ga., Matthew Glydwell, Evan Glydwell, and Christina Wamsley, all of Buffalo Center; his parents-in-law, Clair and Gloria Wood, of Moline, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Kim Ford and her husband, Dennis, of Port Byron, Ill., and Laura Murray and her husband, Jim, of Albany, Ill.; two brothers-in-law, Tim Wood and his wife, Sandy, of Moline, Ill., and Andrew Wood and his wife, Mary Lou, of East Moline, Ill.; one uncle, Carl Matheson and his wife, Bernice, of Milaca, Minn.; two nieces; six nephews; and several cousins.

MASON CITY - Alphine K. Steffels, 86, of Heritage Care Center, died Wednesday (May 9, 2001) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A private family Mass will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights, Minn.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests Masses at St. Joseph's Catholic Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

There will be no visitation.

Alphine K. Steffels was born on June 24, 1914, in Ralph, S.D., the daughter of Emil and Laura (Newlander) Carlson. She graduated from Taylors Falls High School in Taylors Falls, Minn.

She was united in marriage to Donald J. Steffels on Sept. 21, 1940, in South St. Paul, Minn. Following their marriage they moved to South St. Paul, where they made their home until moving to West St. Paul. While living in West St. Paul, she was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.

In 1996 they moved to Mason City to be closer to family. Alphine enjoyed traveling and spending time with family.

Those left to cherish her memory include daughter, Janice Frank and her husband, Robert, of Mason City; grandchildren, Douglas Frank and his wife, Donna, of Mason City, Daniel Frank and fiancee, Regina Henriksen, of Mason City; Vicki Olson, of Mason City, Lori Frank, of Mason City, Ronald Frank and his wife, Jennie, of Garner, and Cindy Blunt and her fiance, Dustin Rolando, of Ionia; 14 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one brother, Vernon Carlson, of Taylors Falls, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband of 60 years on April 28, 2001.

HAMPTON - Dale L. Mollenbeck, 70, of 1847 Killdeer Ave., rural Hampton, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) of kidney failure at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday in Zion Reformed Church, 2029 Jonquil Ave. in rural Sheffield, with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. Visitation will also continue one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

Dale Mollenbeck was born on a farm near Hampton on Aug. 7, 1930, the son of Bert and Lena (Olk) Mollenbeck. He attended country school, and later graduated from Franklin Consolidated School in Latimer with the class of 1947.

On Oct. 7, 1951, Dale was married to Norma Madsen at the Alexander Reformed Church. He was a farmer in Franklin County.

Dale was a lifelong member of the Zion Reformed Church, where he had served as an Elder, Deacon, Sunday school superintendent and teacher and was a member of the Brotherhood Couples Club and JOY Fellowship. He was also a 4-H leader and a member of the Latimer Country Club.

Dale enjoyed being with his family, going to auctions, and having coffee with his friends.

Dale is survived by his wife, Norma, of rural Hampton; two sons and two daughters, Roger, of rural Hampton, Cindy Lind, of Hampton, Tami Ballhagen and her husband, Kevin, of rural Sheffield, and Todd and his wife, Linda, of Latimer; six grandchildren, Christopher Lind, Kelly Lind, Mark Ballhagen, Carley and Shelby Ballhagen, and Trevor Mollenbeck; and one brother, Delmar and his wife, Ellen, of Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two grandsons, Travis Ballhagen and Cody Mollenbeck.

DR. JAMES J. PUHL

IOWA CITY - Dr. James J. Puhl, 57, of 3 High View Knoll, died Thursday (May 10, 2001) at his home from complications of a brain tumor.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Iowa City, with the Rev. Walter Helms celebrating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave. in Iowa City with a vigil service at 5 p.m.

A Memorial fund has been established with Ducks Unlimited, Orthopedics Overseas and American Cancer Society.

Dr. Puhl was born on May 26, 1943 in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of F. Neil and Viola Newgard Puhl. He graduated from Mason City High School where he played football and baseball and played the tuba. He graduated from Notre Dame, University of Iowa Medical School and did his residence at the University of Florida.

He served as the team physician with the Vikings and Twins in Minneapolis, Minn.

He married Susan Hurt on Aug. 14, 1967 at St. Thomas More Church in Iowa City.

Military service was completed in the United States Army in Fort Hood, Texas. In July of 1975 he began working as an orthopedic surgeon at Steindler Orthopedic Clinic.

Some of the accomplishments of which he is most proud are: organizing the implementation of athletic trainers in the Iowa City School District in 1983; serving as City High team physician and receiving the Iowa Team Physician of the Year Award in 1990; serving as President of the Iowa Orthopedic Society and chairing the Legislative Committee which was instrumental in obtaining Patient Protection Legislation for the State of Iowa; serving at the National level on the Education Committee for the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine; and being named Examiner for the American Board of Orthopedics Overseas volunteer in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia.

He was a member of the Iowa Orthopedic Society and of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Ducks Unlimited, and Pheasants Forever. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being at the cabin.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; his children, Elizabeth and her husband, Todd Ohland, of Burlington, and Jacob and his fiancee, Jennifer Klemetsrud, of Devils Lake, N.D.; three granddaughters, Morgan, Rebecca and Anna Ohland; his parents; and one sister, Frances Hermanson and her husband, Paul, of Marshalltown.

MARGARET FOX

RICEVILLE - Margaret Fox, 88, died Thursday (May 10, 2001) at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Immaculate Conception Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Ray Atwood officiating. Graveside services will be held in Calvary Cemetery at Riceville.

Margaret Marie Arens was born on March 18, 1913 in Remsen, the daughter of Nicholas and Margaret (Bauer) Arens. She attended school in Marshall, Minn. Before her marriage, Margaret lived and worked in California for a few years. In 1941 Margaret moved to Minnesota and worked in a defense plant at the start of World War II.

On Oct. 9, 1942, Margaret was united in marriage to Leonard J. Fox in St. Paul, Minn. Shortly thereafter, the couple moved to a farm two miles west and two miles south of Riceville and two years later moved to the farm they called home five and one half miles south of Riceville. In 1983 they moved into Riceville and Margaret lived there until she entered the Rest Home in March of 2001.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, its Altar and Rosary Society, and enjoyed painting and gardening.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard; children and their spouses, Dennis and wife, JoAnn, of Rochester, Minn., Diane and husband, Orville Engelhardt, of Humble Texas, Bernard, of Dubuque, Marilyn and husband, Ron Reis, of Lime Springs, Duane and wife, Jill, of Kansas City, Mo., Peter J. and wife, Jolene, of Forest City, Richard, of Riceville, Patricia J. Fox, of Chanhassen, Minn., and Greg and his wife, Becky, of Riceville; 28 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren; four sisters, Evelyn Larson, of Maplewood, Minn., Catherine Blaeser, of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Mildred Lanoue, of Waubun, Minn., and Irene Olchefski, of Fridley, Minn.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Kathryn Foster; a grandson, Wade Foster; a brother, Clarence Arens; and sister, Lillian Arens, in infancy.

Don D. Wertjes was born to Albert and Emma (Mabus) Wertjes on May 11, 1930. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lakota. Don graduated from Lakota High School and Upper Iowa University in Fayette.

A teacher in both high school and the military, Don returned to Lakota to help his father farm following a sudden accidental death of his brother. After Dennis' death, Don stepped in to be the son to carry on the family legacy of farming the land originally homesteaded by his forefathers who had immigrated from Germany.

He was united in marriage to Delores J. Denger on June 30, 1956. Six children were born to this family.

Don was an active apiarist. He especially enjoyed tending the fruit trees he planted in his extensive orchard on the family farm. He was also an avid reader, a lifelong history buff and a devoted Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Don will always be remembered as a devoted brother. He spent five years taking care of his brother "Heavy" following an illness. From going to doctor's appointments to stopping for milkshakes, Don cherished the time he spent with "Heavy."

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Delores; children, Maureen Dawson and her husband, Mark, of Mason City; Alan Wertjes and his wife, Catherine, of Tacoma, Wash; Larry Wertjes and his wife, Jennifer, of Lakota; Jim Wertjes and his wife, Connie, and their expectant child, of Eagle Grove; Jill Wertjes, of Buffalo Center; and Jeff Wertjes, of Buffalo Center; grandchildren, Nicholas, Megan and Lexis Julsrud-Wertjes, of Lakota, and Ross, William, Nathan and Olivia Wertjes, of Tacoma, Wash.; and a special "sis" Jan Huey and her husband, "Scoop", Doug Huey and his family, of Akron, Ohio, Deb Wilson and her family of Mason City, Anna Huey, of Bozeman, Mont.; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Denger, Marion Denger and his family, Monica Johnson, and her family, all of Dows.

Edith Marjorie (Johnson) Shahan, the daughter of Carlton and Adina (Hefte) Johnson was born Apri1 2, 1916 in rural Kanawha. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Belmond.

Edith was united in marriage to Stanley W. Shahan on June 2, 1934, in Belmond.

They lived in Belmond while Stanley worked for General Mills and Central Soya. In 1945 they moved to Amarillo, Texas, but returned to Belmond that same year. After a medical retirement from Central Soya, they moved to Las Vegas, Nev., where they lived and worked in a Mobile Home Park. They returned to Iowa in 1993, and lived in Ames, Iowa.

Edith died on Wednesday (May 9, 2001) at the Riverside Manor Nursing Home in Ames.

Edith had a strong faith and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond.

Those thankful for sharing in her life are her children, Allen Shahan and his wife, Jody, of Yamell, Alaska, Karen Benson and her husband, Tony, of Shallowater, Texas, daughter-in-law, Mary Shahan, of Ames; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Carol Christenson and her husband, Earl, of Forest City, and Wilma Friesleben, of Belmond; brothers, Dudley Johnson and his wife, Janice, of Kanawha, Arland Johnson and his wife, Avis, of Hector, Minn., and Gary Johnson and his wife, Barbara, of St. Johns, Newfoundland, and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Elaine A. Downs, 81, of Mason City, died Thursday (May 10, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. in Mason City with Father Carl Ries officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Wesley, Iowa, with Father Dan Greving officiating.

Visitation was held on Friday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City. A scriptural wake service was held Friday evening at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel.

The family of Elaine Downs has requested that memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mason City.

Elaine A. (Studer) Downs was born on Oct. 18, 1919, in Wesley, Iowa, in Kossuth County, the daughter of Alphonse and Isabelle (Haverly) Studer. She received her education in Wesley parochial and public schools.

On Dec. 27, 1937, Elaine was united in marriage to Edward Downs at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wesley. The couple made their home in Wesley until 1965 when they moved to Mason City. Edward passed away in 1967.

Elaine attended Hamilton College in Mason City to further her education. She worked at Gildner's for some time and then became a marketing researcher for Nielson's Rating Company.

Elaine was a choir member from her youth, and she played the organ for Mass for 20 years at Wesley, Iowa. Music was her life as she sang in the Farm Bureau Chorus in Algona, and also in the Sweet Adelines.

She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, a member of St. Cecilia's Guild, and Mason City Senior Citizens. She also enjoyed playing card games including bridge, canasta, and 500.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Sharlene Reising and her husband, Jim, of Garner, Douglas Downs and his wife, Diane, of Eagan, Minn., Sylvia Baker and her husband, Art, of Lakeview, Ark., and Dan Downs and his wife, Janet, of Mt. Vernon, Wash.; 13 grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jerry, Nancy, Rhonda, David, Dean, Dennis, Brent, Sara, Rob, Angela, Elaina, and Christian; 17 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Phyllis Kelch, of Prairie du Chein, Wis., Rita Young, of Garner, Mae Haiden and her husband, Richard, of Mason City, Julie Jarvis of Derby, Kan., and Rose Gerdes of Britt ; one brother, Gerald Studer and his wife, Kitty, of Mason City; a special friend, Frank Funk, of Mason City; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Iva was born June 28, 1916, on the farm of her parents, Melvin and Clara (Nonnweiler) Johnson, near Miller, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Miller. She graduated from Garner High School and taught country school near Forest City.

Iva was united in marriage to Melvin Myklestad on Dec. 21, 1942. They farmed south of Ventura for several years, later moving to Ventura and finally settling in Garner.

Iva enjoyed flowers and gardening, canning and cooking, but her great joy was spending time with her family.

Iva will be greatly missed by her husband, Melvin, of Garner; her son, Ron Myklestad, and his wife, Jessica, of Prescott, Ariz.; her daughter, Janice Snater, and her husband, Ron, and two grandchildren, Chad and Joshua Snater, all of Madison, Wis.; two sisters, Geraldine Monson of Forest City and Arlene Clark and her husband, Donald, of Florida (and Clear Lake); and many nieces and nephews.

Iva was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Dorothy; four brothers-in-law; a sister-in-law; and a brother and sister in infancy.

Carl Richard Hankenson was born on Feb. 8, 1913, at Herrington, Kan., the son of Ralph and Edith (Jayne) Hankenson. He attended and graduated as president of his class from Cleveland High School, St. Louis, Mo., in 1930. Carl went on to attend Kansas City Junior College in Kansas City.

Carl moved to Mason City in 1936 where he worked for Tankar Oil Company. He met and was united in marriage to Marian E. Bieber on Jan. 15, 1945, at Bethany, Mo. The couple moved their family to various locations, but Clear Lake was always home for them.

Carl spent his time working as an independent oil jobber, owning and operating C&H Gas Company, which was comprised of several gasoline stations throughout Iowa and Southern Minnesota. In later years, Carl found his niche in politics. He was elected Second Ward Councilman of Clear Lake in 1971, and later he served as mayor of Clear Lake for three terms, from 1978 to 1989.

Spending time with and supporting his family was one of Carl's favorite pastimes. Carl loved fishing and spoke often of trips taken with family and friends to Gibson's Resort in Upsula, Ontario, Canada. Carl was an avid sports fan, with baseball (particularly the St. Louis Cardinals) by far being his favorite. As a child, Carl was a member of the original St. Louis Cardinals Knot-Hole Gang. He loved to watch and cheer for his sons, and in later years, his grandchildren, as they participated in school activities. In recent years, Carl took on an important role as a father figure for his grandson, Matthew. Carl was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and the I.O.O.F.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marian, of Clear Lake; six children, Dr. Richard Hankenson and his wife, Ann, of Clarksville, Tenn., Jane Walls and her husband, Richard, of Clear Lake, Robert Hankenson and his wife, Laurie, of Santa Barbara, Calif., Dr. Paul Hankenson and his wife, Denise, of Okemos, Mich., Mary Hankenson of Clear Lake, and Lee Carol Hudson and her husband, Everett, of Dougherty; 12 grandchildren, Rickey Hankenson, Scott Hankenson and his wife, Darcy, Abby Fraley, Jennifer Singer and her husband, Mat, Stephanie Hankenson, C.J. Hankenson, Elizabeth Walls, Capt. Kathleen Walls, Paul Hankenson, Sarah Proft and her husband, Andrew, Elisa Hankenson, and Matthew Hankenson; and 10 great grandchildren.

DR. ROBERT D. BRAINERD

LAKE MILLS - Robert D. Brainerd, 72, passed away Thursday (May 10, 2001) at the Albert Lea Medical Center in Albert Lea, Minn.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge with military rites performed by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post No. 235.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Monday.

Robert Donald Brainerd was born on June 22, 1929, in Des Moines. He was adopted by Harold E. and Helen Ida (Weiss) Brainerd of Fort Dodge. He was confirmed at the age of 14 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge. He graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1948. He then attended the State University of Iowa and graduated in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in pre-med.

On June 10, 1951, he was united in marriage to Constance Maxine Douglas in Fort Dodge.

In 1952 he entered the United States Army as a rifleman during the Korean Campaign.

Robert then returned to Fort Dodge and enrolled in the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines.

After graduation, he began private practice in LuVerne until 1967 when he re-entered the Army and was assigned to the Medical Corps. His 22nd MASH unit was sent to Vietnam and became the U.S. Army's farthest forward MASH unit.

In the fall of 1969 he entered a partnership with S. M. Haugland, M.D., of Lake Mills. This was the first unrelated MD/DO partnership in the state of Iowa. The partnership flourished until it was dissolved in December of 1974. He continued to practice in Lake Mills with the Albert Lea Regional Medical Group until retirement.

Dr. Brainerd had a life-long appreciation of the horse.

He was active in the following organizations: Lake Mills Chamber of Commerce, Lake Mills Development Corporation, Lake Mills Health Officer 1974-1992, Winnebago County Deputy Medical Examiner 1969-1992, Winnebago County Advisory Committee 1974-1992, Winnebago Board of Health 1972-1992 and a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. In the spring of 1997, he received the Iowa Osteopathic Society Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Brainerd is survived by his loving wife, Connie Brainerd, of Lake Mills; four children, Robert Brainerd Jr. of Mineral Point, Wis., Heather Ingebretson of Lake Mills, Barrett Brainerd and his wife, Marilyn, of Mason City, and Karen Stensrude of Lake Mills; five grandchildren, Mike Ingebretson and his special friend, Rachel McNelly, Spencer Stensrude, Amanda Harms, Justine Stensrude and Kimberly Brainerd; one great-granddaughter, Michaela McNelly; one brother-in-law, Richard Douglas and his wife, Arlene, of Ottumwa; one aunt, ''Sox'' Carlson of Otho, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Craig was born June 14, 1943, in Algona, the son of Adrian and Arlene (Miller) Goehring. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1961 and then attended Mason City Junior College.

Craig served in the U.S. Army from 1965-67. Craig worked for Nichols Aluminum & Wire, which was later purchased by National Steel where he served as branch manager. For the past 15 years he worked for Premier Products, Cleveland, Ohio, in sales.

Craig was a member of the Moose Lodge and enjoyed golfing and bowling.

He is survived by his mother, Arlene Goehring, Mason City; two sisters, Jan Wilkinson and her husband, Tom, Dows, and Susan Goehring, Flagstaff, Ariz.; three nieces, Shawna Pedelty, Mason City, Stacie Till, Mason City, and Jeri White, Hampton; several great nieces and nephews; and his good friend, John Hurd and his wife, Karen, Mason City.

Robert married Shirley Fitzgerald June 18, 1960, at Our Lady of Good Council Church in Fonda. He worked for the Des Moines Register from 1951 until his retirement in 1990. After retirement he worked part time for the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

He was a member of Saint Joseph The Worker Church where he served as a Minister of Hospitality and helped with bingo.

Robert is survived by his wife, Shirley Kirschbaum, Dubuque; a son, Robert J. Kirschbaum III, Chicago; two daughters, Linda and her fiance, Sean Kirschbaum, Chicago, and Laurie Kirschbaum, Chicago; one sister, Rose Marie Kirschbaum, Milwaukee; and a sister-in-law, Mary Dee Schachtner, Fonda.

MILDRED SORBO

NORTHWOOD - Mildred (Mrs. Gilman) Sorbo, 810 10th St. N., Maple Court Apartments, died Sunday (May 13, 2001) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood, with Pastors Steve Smith and Al Stoa officiating. Burial will be in the Silver Lake Cemetery.

Mrs. Sorbo, the former Mildred Willand, was born July 12, 1910, in Worth County, the daughter of Wilhelm and Clara (Calgaard) Willand.

On June 30, 1934, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Mildred was united in marriage to Gilman Sorbo, rural Emmons.

Their early married years were spent in rural Manly and rural Northwood. However, their permanent home was made in the rural Silver Lake area, Northwood. Finally, Mildred and Gilman moved to the Maple Court Apartments where Mildred enjoyed her last seven years.

Mildred was an active member of the Silver Lake Parish until the time of her death. She was an avid gardener, an excellent seamstress, and enjoyed cooking, baking, crossword puzzles, and playing cards.

For many years, Mildred was employed at the St. Johns Lutheran Retirement Home in Albert Lea, Minn. She possessed a great zest for life, and thoroughly enjoyed the company of her family and friends. Her family was her greatest joy. She cherished precious time with her grandchildren and great-grandson.

She is survived by her daughter, Marcia Klapperich and her husband, Norman, of Stacyville; three grandchildren, Nicole Klapperich, of Kansas City, Mo., Ryan Klapperich and his wife, Bridget, of Wichita, Kan., Michael Klapperich, a student at Iowa State University, Ames, and one great-grandson, Colin Klapperich, of Wichita, Kan. She also leaves behind three sisters, Opal Solomonson and her husband, John, of Lake Mills, Esther Bodde, of Hampton, and Myrtle Tapps, of Mason City; one brother, Clarence Willand and his wife Fern, of Joice; four sisters-in-law, Ellnora Willand, of Northwood, Carol Willand, of Joice, Dorothy Towne and her husband, Earl, of Emmons, Minn., and Nina Sorbo, of Estherville.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband and an infant son, three brothers, Walter Willand, of Northwood, and Orin and Stanley Willand of Joice; four brothers-in-law, Hio Bodde, Ray Tapps, Ervin Hovland, Ellard Sorbo, and Malmin Anderson; and one sister-in-law, Anna Anderson.

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. - Nancy Ann Nicholi Tenney, 62, wife of Jerome Dale Tenney, entered into eternal rest on Sunday afternoon (May 13, 2001) at her home.

The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Dale Tenney are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell will be held at Carolina Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Tenney was born Jan. 14, 1938 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Grace Eldridge Nicholi. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a graduate of Mason City High School in Iowa, member of Ladies Auxiliary Fleet Reserve Association of Goose Creek and was a Eucharistic Minister.

She is survived by her husband; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerome Dale Tenney Jr. and Karen F. Tenney, of Virginia Beach, Va., Duane A. Tenney and Karren D. Tenney, of Goose Creek, S.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl A. Bergen and Steve Bergen, of Summerville, S.C.; one sister, Shirley Crabtree, of Spencer; three grandchildren, Christopher and Jeremy Tenney, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Caithlin Bergen, of Summerville, S.C.

BELMOND - William "Bill" Goemaat, 70, of Belmond, passed away Sunday (May 13, 2001) at his home in Belmond.

Burial will take place in the Wright Christian Reformed Church Cemetery. William, the son of Jan and Neeltje (Star) Goemaat, was born on Oct. 24, 1930, in Hilversum, Netherlands. He grew up in the Netherlands where he was educated. He came to the United States in 1951.

William was united in marriage to Helen Crum on March 11, 1952, in Hollandale,Minn. The couple started farming in Leland, Iowa. They later farmed south of Kanawha. In 1989 they moved to Belmond.

William enjoyed, traveling, and model trains. He was an avid reader. William loved history.

William was a member of Wright Christian Reformed Church of Kanawha. William helped Belmond Community Care Car as a driver, and served as president. He was involved with the American Cancer Society. William had no hesitation sharing with others about cancer and the prevention of it.

William is survived by his wife, Helen; one daughter, Denise and her husband, Mike Vasey, of Grand Island, Neb.; two sons, John and his wife, Jean (Sorenson), of Bennett, and Marv and his wife (Mary), of Belmond; seven grandchildren, Amy, Alex, and Brian Vasey; Will, and Kristina Goemaat, and Justin and Dan Goemaat; one sister, Hinda Hosple, of the Netherlands; and a brother, Bas Goemaat, of the Netherlands; and a stepmother who is currently living in Switzerland, as well as numerous friends and family.

His parents and a sister-in-law and one niece preceded him in death.

BEVERLY J. LERAAEN

ST. ANSGAR - Beverly J. Leraaen, 65, of St. Ansgar, died on Sunday (May 13, 2001) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery in St. Ansgar.

Beverly was born on March 22, 1936, in Austin, Minn. to Edmund and Elinor (Anderson) Bachman. She was baptized and confirmed in Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle, Minn. She grew up in Lyle and graduated from Lyle High School in 1954.

She was united in marriage to Oral "Bud" K. Leraaen on May 15, 1955. They made their home in St. Ansgar and raised three children, Nancy, Scott, and Eric. She worked at St. Ansgar Mills from 1963 to 1979 as bookkeeper. She worked for the St. Ansgar School District as business manager/board secretary from 1979-1984.

Bev and Bud moved to Boone in 1984 where she worked as business manager/board secretary for Boone Community Schools for 13 years. In Boone she was secretary of the Morning Kiwanis for five years, director of the Boone County Credit Bureau for five years and was a member of the Boone Golf and Country Club. Bev was an active member of the Augastana Lutheran Church while in Boone.

Bev and Bud returned to St. Ansgar in 1997 to be closer to family and friends. She served as president of the American Legion Auxiliary for two terms, and was an active member of the church she loved, the First Lutheran Church. She belonged to the Mary Ruth Circle and served as treasurer of the church. Bev was an active member of the community and enjoyed socializing with her many friends.

Bev enjoyed participating in the church she loved, the First Lutheran Church of St.Ansgar, being an active member of the community, shopping for her grandchildren, having morning coffee with her friends, and gambling trips to Las Vegas.

She was preceded in death by her infant son, Steven; father, Edmund; and a brother, Bruce.

Bev is survived by her husband, Bud; her mother, Elinor, of Lyle, Minn.; daughter, Nancy Johnson, of Osage, and her children, Bryan and Julie; son, Scott and his wife, Denise, of St. Ansgar, and their children, Nelle, Leah, Rycki and Stevie; son, Eric and his wife, Lynn, of St. Ansgar; one sister, Sue Young, of Pomona, Calif. and her son, Kevin; brother-in-law, Galen and his wife, Janice, of St. Ansgar; sister-in-law, Bonnie and her husband, Bill, of Elko, Nev.

CLEAR LAKE - Ruth E. Larson, 73, 807 Ninth Ave S., died Saturday (May 12, 2001) at Muse-Norris Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Greg Boyle officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Memorials may be given to the Ruth E. Larson Memorial Fund.

Ruth was born March 31, 1928, in Lakota, the daughter of Paul and Agnes (Westburg) Zielske. She grew up on a farm in Ledyard and attended school in Ledyard.

Ruth married Merle Larson on April 25, 1950, in Mason City. She worked at various jobs during her lifetime including an ammunitions plant in Ankeny during World War II where she put bullets into machine gunbelts. But her favorite jobs were that of homemaker, wife, mother and grandma.

Ruth always put her family first; and she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Ruth also enjoyed her pets, camping, fishing, gardening, embroidery, sports, flea markets and garage sales and traveling. She had seen both coasts and been to some of the most beautiful sights in the United States. But her "favorite" place was Iowa and Clear Lake. Ruth will be missed by her family and friends.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Merle Larson, of Clear Lake; one son, David A. Larson, of Clear Lake; one daughter, Judy Johnson and her husband, Daniel, of Council Bluffs; five grandchildren, Kristin Johnson, of Omaha, Neb, Summer Malone and her husband, Adam, of Council Bluffs, Heather, Tyler and Erik Johnson, of Council Bluffs; one brother, Lawrence "Butch" Zielske and his wife Delilah, of LeCenter, Minn.; five sisters, Louise Boettcher and her husband, Willard, of Emmons, Minn., Elnora Rache, of Fairmont, Minn., Betty Hagedorn and her husband, Don, of Blue Earth, Minn., Dolores Jorgenson, of Ledyard, and Dorothy Courrier and her husband, Gary, of Bricelyn, Minn.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, one brother Carl, and two sisters, Alice and Donna.
