WILBIRD DEAN 'BILLY' WALKER

GREENE - Wilbird Dean "Billy" Walker, 70, of 205 S. Fourth St. in Greene, died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, with Pastor Jake Knight and Pastor Mark Luckiesh of the Seventh Day Adventist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Wilbird Dean Walker was born April 21, 1930, in Greene, the son of Wilbert M. and Merle (Langenhagen) Walker and died Wednesday (March 21, 2001) at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs, where he had been a resident just over one day.

Bill was born with spastic paralysis and required many surgeries during his childhood, minimizing his formal education. He was confined to a wheelchair and later a hospital bed. In spite of circumstances that could have been limiting, Billy had a keen intelligence, an extraordinary memory and a world as big as his imagination and as far reaching as his many, many friends throughout the country.

Billy loved people. He especially enjoyed visits and telephone conversations with his friends, who extended from pastors in every denomination to radio personalities. He had a much-used typewriter that he used to correspond with many around the country and to type books of the Bible for close friends.

Billy enjoyed having something he could do for others. A special delight to him were the birthday open houses his mother, Merle, held for him each year, sometimes spanning several days. He was happy when his friends ate ice cream and cake with him.

Faith in God was the primary focus of Billy's life. He loved reading the Bible, studying Sabbath School lessons with his mother, singing hymns with people who came to visit him, and praying for others. He listened to many radio sermons and was in touch with those pastors by letters, phone conversations and visits.

Billy was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Each year for 49 years Billy and his mother attended the denomination's week-long camp meeting. Through the church, they donated funds to build two lamb shelters, sabbath school rooms for mountain children in Malaysia. One was dedicated to Billy and the other to his grandmother, Bird Langenhagen.

Billy and Merle enjoyed traveling to visit friends and tourist attractions in all but two of the states in the continental U.S. He liked watching television and listening to old-time and other favorite radio shows. At one time, radio listeners donated money to purchase a typewriter for Billy. He was able to recall names, events, addresses, and dates of deaths from years back. His mother said he was her memory.

Billy is survived by his mother, Merle, who took loving care of him all of his life, and by his many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbert M. Walker; his stepfather, John C. Noble; his grandparents, William W. and Bird Langenhagen; and two uncles, Wilbird C. Langenhagen and D. Wayne Langenhagen.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Billy Walker Memorial Fund in care of the family.

H. ARLENE GROSLAND

MASON CITY - The funeral for H. Arlene Grosland will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., Mason City, with the Reverend Joel Dahlen officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E.

Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice in Arlene's name.

On March 23, 2001, at 5:35 a.m. H. Arlene Grosland entered Heaven with her Lord to join her husband, Carl, her family and friends. She entered this life on Sept. 27, 1915, to Manley and Blanche (Wells) Low, becoming the sixth child out of 14 children in Gordonsville, Minn. She received her education in Northwood.

She met her future husband through her younger brothers and sister during a snowstorm and, as their teacher, was invited to stay at their home. They were married on June 16, 1937, in Mason City.

Although she was christened Helen Arlene Low, she always went by Arlene and was affectionately called "Snookey" by her family. Arlene formerly lived at 1936 S. Jefferson Ave. , the last three years at The Manor and recently at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Her husband's career was in education. They settled back in Mason City the summer of 1959. She helped open up Kresege's in the Sears Shopping Center. But this was part-time, for she wanted to be involved in her daughters' activities, as she was previously with her son through his childhood. She later worked at Tempo until the "college days" were over and then she had a much deserved retirement.

As with most mothers, her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, and her precious great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed a good game of cards, especially at The Manor, topping it off with a scoop of ice cream before going to bed.

Through the years she was actively involved with her church at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.

She will always be remembered for the crocheting she enjoyed. So many people have precious keepsakes because of this interest. Arlene loved to bake and try out new recipes.

Arlene also enjoyed collecting Precious Moments, which is clearly evident - her collection will shower her great-grandchildren and future great-grandchildren with keepsakes for years to come.

Arlene had a special quality of becoming friends with so many people wherever she went. As a niece wrote to her daughter just this week, "she is a very special lady; funny, pretty, and gracious all rolled into one."

She was one of those fortunate people who did not show her age. Even when she moved to The Manor in her 80s, some took her for being in her late '60s, early '70s.

Those who survive with such precious memories include her son, Lanny and his wife, Jane Grosland, from Cheney, Kan. and daughter, Carlene Grosland and fiancé Patrick Kelly, from Nora Springs. Arlene's grandchildren are Mark and his wife, Becky Grosland and their two children, Jacob and Nathan, from Salina, Kan, Jill Grosland from Mission, Kan., Kyle Mussman from Mason City, Casey Mussman of Nora Springs and his daughter, Marissa Westfall of Mason City, and Kip Mussman, of Nora Springs. Brothers and sisters include the late Lucile "Cile" and George Mathews, Bernice and the late, Vale Low, Luella and the late Clarence "Babe" Low, Eleanor and the late Harold "Honey" Low, the late Pearle and Leif Weston, Russell and Dorothy Low, Carroll "Mickey" and Frances Low, Pat and the late Lyle "Bub" Low, Bernice "Sis" and Drexell Estes, Allen "Sonny" and DeLoris Low, and Richard and Marge Low.

Carl's family was just as close to Arlene and they include the late Oscar and Ida (Moretz) Grosland, Martha and the late Henry "Hank" Dahl, the late Louis "Louie" Grosland, the late Elmer and Alice Grosland, Esther and the late Adolph Grosland, August and Loret Grosland, George and Della Grosland, and Evelyn and the late Robert "Bob" Garnas.

There are also numerous nieces and nephews who will remember Aunt Arlene or Aunt Snookey. Adopted members of the family are Vernice Klesath and her family, Miriam Peterson, and Sharon Sutton, along with a host of friends she made along the way, especially her Manor family.

Arlene's infant son, Gary Lee, an infant brother, and an infant sister preceded her in death.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the people at The Manor and Good Shepherd Health Center for the car they gave.

Mom, Grandma, you will be forever in our hearts ... Thank you for being you!
