GEORGIA E. KELLISON

ROCKWELL - Georgia Eunice Wood Kellison was a loving woman from a loving family. She died Friday (March 16, 2001) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home, Rockwell, at the age of 96.

She was born in a log cabin on Nov. 11, 1904, in Walnut, Mo., the first child of Walter and Emma Bergman Wood. She graduated from Elmer High School in 1924 and attended college in Kirksville, Mo., where she later used her academic abilities to be a young teacher.

While Georgia was growing up, her nickname was Splinters because she was a 'tiny' little Wood. She fell in love with her high school sweetheart, Lafie C. Kellison. They came to Iowa to farm and were married April 10, 1926, at the Methodist parsonage in Hampton.

Lafie and Georgia together raised their children, Charles (to age 5), Carlos and Barbara. In 1952 they moved to Latimer. Georgia became the head cook at Cal Community Schools in Latimer and loved every minute and every student during her 15 years of employment in the district.

In 1968, Georgia worked as a house cook for the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity at Iowa State University and touched the lives of college students. In 1972, Georgia worked for Arthur Lillie at the greenhouse in Hampton. She loved this job and Arthur and Georgia became great friends.

In 1991, she moved in with her son-in-law and daughter and was able to contribute to the work in their restaurant. She left a piece of her heart wherever she lived and will not be forgotten.

Georgia loved her family. She and Lafie took part in all of their children's school activities and never once missed their children's basketball games. Their children knew Georgia would always be available for them. Georgia applied her skills to do things that she really loved to do and there wasn't anything she could not do.

She drew great pleasure in the tasks of gardening, cooking and sewing. Her life's tasks were activities that benefited others, and she recognized that the basic needs of loving, caring for, and feeding people was a gift she could give without reservation. Loving others was one of Georgia's character traits. Seeds of kindness grew from her actions. Behind her kindness was God - the guiding principle in Georgia's life. She accepted Jesus as her personal Savior and trusted the Lord in everything she did. Her road map for life was the Bible, and it was always at her side. She leaves a legacy for others to know God personally.

Memories of her are cherished. Grandma Georgia deeply loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They will miss her daily presence in their lives. Yet, the gift of time given to her has given each of them a wonderful image of living a loving and productive life. She was proud of her friends, brothers, sisters and family, and they in turn have felt pride in knowing her.

She recognized the respect others had for her. In one of her greatest memories the Latimer graduates joined in a standing ovation as she walked into the gym at the first All School Reunion. She was honored by their tribute to her and held that memory until her final days.

A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Hampton, with the Rev. Gregory Smith officiating. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.
