PATRICIA MAY LEONARD

MASON CITY - Patricia May Farrer Leonard was born in Mason City, Nov. 29, 1919, to Royce F. and Ora May (Merrill) Farrer. At age 2 she was enrolled as a Charter Member of the Little Light Bearers of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church where she was confirmed in 1932. She graduated MCHS with the class of '38, then from Mason City Junior College and, much later, from the American Institute of Business.

On June 17, 1942, she married M. Vernon Leonard and left for Ft. Sill, Okla., where Vern was stationed with the United States Army Band. After discharge, the couple moved to the Chicago area before returning to Mason City permanently in 1955.

Pat was a telephone operator for the Illinois, South Western, and North Western Bell telephone companies for 10 years, but most of her work days (30 years) were spent at the "Switch Board" as receptionist for the First National Bank (a.k.a. Wells Fargo), retiring in 1983. She had a gift for recognizing customers by their voices and called them by name before they had a chance to identify themselves.

Pat was raised in a family who valued the arts and nature and brought that passion to her offspring. She played the violin, wrote poetry, enjoyed digging in the earth and watching things grow. She kept her binoculars and Audubon books close at hand to identify the birds who came to feed outside her window. She was fascinated by the whole universe so when the potential observation of Sputnik was due, she headed with blanket and kids to a dark spot to catch a glimpse of the satellite. She was an avid reader who kept a stack of books by bed and chair. Reading interests included mysteries, histories, biographies, spirituality, natural health, psychic phenomena, and the afterlife. She had an extraordinary command of words and always had several crossword puzzles at hand. She enjoyed time spent in conversation with friends and was very involved with planning Class of '38 reunions and gathering archival data. She also became the genealogist for the family. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Women's Chamber of Commerce, and the First United Methodist Church.

She placed her own many talents in the background and chose instead to live life through the adventures of her children, David and Deb, and her grandchildren, Emily and Aaron. She never grew tired of hearing -then boasting about - their accomplishments, travels, friends, or their hopes and dreams. Her love and her pride for her family were obvious to anyone within earshot. She supported every effort toward whatever goal was chosen.

In the last years health kept her close to home. She was able to remain in her home through the efforts of her family, Mercy Home Health, and her wonderful neighbors who went beyond what anyone could ever ask. She was so very grateful to stay at home until time to "slip the surly bonds of earth and touch the face of God."

Although her spirit is omnipresent, Pat's physical presence will be missed by her son, David Leonard Solomon and wife, Linda, of Placerville, Calif.; daughter, Deborah May Halfpap and loved one, Lance Masters; grandchildren, Emily Halfpap and Aaron Halfpap and their father and stepmother, Doug and Kayla Halfpap, and their grandmother, Virginia Halfpap, all of Mason City; and Emily's' loved one, Brett Murray, of Hampton; sister, Jacqueline Kuriger, of Mesa, Ariz.; brother, James Farrer and wife, Connie, of Rockport, Md.; seven nieces and nephews and their families; many good friends including very special friends Steve, Nancy, Bobbi Jo, Zane, and Charley Hugo, Beth and Charlie Babbit, Ragna and Ronnie Flatness and Ginny Lane.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Vern, and brother Royce "Bill" Farrer, Jr.

Since she donated her body to medical research, there will be no visitation. Friends are welcome to call at Deb's home, 1020 N. Delaware, Mason City, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27th.

Memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia, with the Rev. Douglas Anderson.

Memorials may be directed to the Patricia May Leonard Memorial Fund.
