ALLISON - Gene Conrad Prange, 83, of Allison died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000) at the Allison Care Center.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Thursday at the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, with the Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison.

MARY ELLEN PECK

MASON CITY - Mary Ellen Peck, 80, of Mason City died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill and Monsignor Joseph Slepicka officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today with a public Scripture wake service at 6:30 p.m. followed by a rosary service at 7:15 p.m. at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

The family of Mary Ellen Peck has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Holy Family Elevator Fund or Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in her memory.

Mary Ellen Peck was born on Nov. 4, 1919, in Ridgeway, Ill., the daughter of Edward and Florence (Dickey) Zirkelbach. She attended and received her education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Anderson, Ind., graduating from St. Mary's Catholic High School as valedictorian of her class in 1938.

After completing her schooling she worked at Tupmanns Grocery Store in Anderson, Ind., in the accounts receivable department for several years.

She was united in marriage to Dana R. Peck Jr. on Oct. 25, 1944, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mary graduated in 1959 from the Mass Feeding Civil Defense Training School in Ramsey County in St. Paul, Minn. The family moved to Mason City in 1963.

She enjoyed reading, gardening, collecting baskets and making the world's best chocolate chip cookies, but her great love and enjoyment was raising her family and being with her husband.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Dana R. Peck Jr. of Mason City; three children, Charles Peck and his wife, Dianne, of Roseville, Minn., Michael Peck of Chandler, Ariz., and Julia Sullivan and her husband, John, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Greg Peck and his wife, Barb, of Roseville, Minn., Sharyl Miller and her husband, Brad, of Roseville, Minn., Melissa Momyer of Las Vegas, Nev. And Elizabeth Momyer of Mason City; three great-grandchildren, Trace, Max and Charlie; and a great-grandchild any hour; three sisters, Pauline Day and Dorothy Ramsey, of Anderson, Ind., and Betty Green and her husband, Asa, of Livingston, Ala.; a brother, James Zirkelbach of Anderson, Ind.; an uncle, Bob Campbell of Anderson, Ind.; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends; special pet friends, Spidey, Liz, Giz, Babe, Beau, August and Toby.

Her parents, a brother, Edward, and a sister, Catherine, preceded her in death.

DOWS - Ione D. Foust, 83, died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000) at Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Dows, with the Rev. Tony Hershey officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Dows.

MASON CITY - Ruth Nuehring, 99, of Mason City died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at the I.O.O.F. Home.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

CORA A. GERDES

WODEN - Cora A. Gerdes, 98, of Woden died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home in Cedar Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Arlen Lloyd officiating. Interment will be at Bingham Township Cemetery south of Woden.

MILTON F. 'BILLY' SMITH

BRITT - Milton F. "Billy" Smith, 65, passed away Monday (Oct. 30, 2000) in the Hospice Center at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for Billy Smith will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at Britt.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Bill was born Sept. 13, 1935, in Britt, the oldest of eight children of Milton L. and Fern F. (Charbonneaux) Smith.

He attended Britt Grade and Junior High Schools. At age 15, Billy was diagnosed with cancer. He was one of Iowa City's first radiation patients. In the mid '70s Billy was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, causing him to enter Duncan Heights. In 1984, Billy entered Westview Care Center.

Billy was employed for many years at Britt Tech Corporation in Britt and later at the Garner Work Center in Garner.

Billy loved life and never had anything bad to say about anyone. He will be remembered for the hot pads he made and the cards he sold at local craft shows.

He is survived by six sisters and one brother, Patricia Van Gorp and her husband, Virgil, of Marshalltown, Barbara Nonnweiler and her husband, Robert, of Garner, Jean Perkins and her husband, Jerry, of Britt, Judy Sonius and her husband, John, of Britt, Nancy Michel and her husband, Dave, of Britt, David Smith and his wife, Sandi, of Britt, and Sue Steinlicht of Britt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two nephews and one niece.

LEONE "LEE" E. NEUHAUS

MASON CITY - Leone "Lee" E. Neuhaus, 88, of 1128 Eighth St. N.W., died Saturday (Oct. 28, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City..

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be in Visitation Catholic Cemetery, Stacyville.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. There will be a rosary beginning at 7 p.m. followed by a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the Leone Neuhaus Memorial Fund.

Leone was born Aug. 2, 1912, the daughter of Valentine and Ida (Smith) Brown in Stacyville. She graduated from Visitation Catholic School in Stacyville.

In July of 1939 Leone was united in marriage to Gus Neuhaus in Easton, Md. The couple lived for a brief time in Chicago before returning to Mason City.

Leone could often be found playing bingo, 500 or gin. She would spend hours working in her garden and canning her bountiful harvest. Leone was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, St. John's Circle, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Elks. She was a member and past president of the Does in Albert Lea and a member of Senior Citizens Center and AARP local and national.

Those thankful for having shared in Leone's life include her son, Dr. Ronald L. Neuhaus of River Falls, Wis.; a sister, Dorothy Wageman of Stacyville; three grandsons, Dr. Eric Angus of Victoria, British Columbia, Christian Neuhaus of Madison, Wis., and Max Neuhaus of River Falls, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Neuhaus was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gus; three sisters, Ann Guffey, Belle Keitges and Irmine Olson; and two brothers, Charles and Walter Brown.

JOANN E. COTTER

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Joann E. Cotter, 57, of Hempstead, N.Y., and formerly of Wantagh, N.Y., died Friday (Oct. 27, 2000) at the Island Medical Center in Hempstead, N.Y., following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with the Rev. Philip Recker of Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Joann was born June 26, 1943, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of William and Josephine (Jahoda) Nestel. She grew up in Huntington, N.Y., and graduated from Catholic High School.

Joann married Nicholas J. Cotter in 1973. They lived in Wantagh; she was a homemaker. Nicholas died Feb. 13, 2000, in Osage. Joann had been a resident of Mayfair Care Center in Hempstead since 1992.

She is survived by one son, Anthony Cotter of Hicksville, N.Y., and formerly of Osage; three brothers-in-law, Ed Cotter of Inwood, N.Y., Otis Cotter Jr. of Osage and Bill Cotter of Osage.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Michael Nestal.

STANLEY T. BOWEN

URBANDALE - Stanley T. Bowen, 75, of 4224 Mary Lynn Dr., died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at the Kavanagh House of respiratory complications.

There will be a Celebration of Life Gathering from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Christian Life Worship Center in Clive.

There will be no visitation. Brandt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa in his memory.

Private burial of cremains will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Stanley T. Bowen was born on Jan. 9, 1925, in Mason City, the son of Vern Robert and Gladys Marie (Pearce) Bowen. He was in the United States Navy during WWII.

He had lived in Urbandale for 10 years. Mr. Bowen had lived in Montezuma, Des Moines and Davenport, before moving to Urbandale.

He was a sales representative for food and agricultural products. He retired in 1982.

Stan enjoyed the Chicago Cubs baseball, Iowa Hawkeyes football and spending time with his grandchildren.

He belonged to the Masonic Lodge and the Iowa Hawkeye I Club.

He is survived by his wife, Dotty Bowen, of Urbandale; two sons, Dave Bowen, of Marion and Jim Bowen, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; two stepsons, Dan Good, and Dave Good, both of Des Moines; a daughter, Kristen Luftman, of Manhattan, Kan.; and stepdaughter, Diane Taylor, of Ankeny; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.


VERA E. ROBERTS

MASON CITY - Vera E. Roberts, 95, of Mason City, died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000) at the Grandview Heights Nursing Home in Marshalltown.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wayside Chapel of the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont, Minn.

HAROLD L. SWEHLA

GERMANTOWN, Wis. - Harold L. Swehla was born April 8, 1927, in Mason City, and died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2000) in Germantown, Wis. Husband of Marvyl (Nee Kiser), who he married in 1951. Father of Mark (Therese) of Charlotte, N.C., and Mary (Stephen) Kronshagen, of Germantown, Wis.; grandfather of Lindsey Emmer, of Samantha, Andrea and Zachary Swehla and Tyler, Nicole and Kelley Kronshagen; brother-in-law, of Muriel Fox, of Mason City, Charles (Evelyn) Kiser, of Gaithersburg, Md., Edith Kiser, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Ron Kiser, of Muscatine. Further survived by an aunt, Viola Herold, of Spillville; a cousin, Ethel O'Byrne, of New Hampton; and a cousin-in-law, Joyce (Chuck) Swift, of Clear Lake.

Harold graduated from Mason City High School in 1945 and joined the Army Air Corp. After service he attended Drake University and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1952. He worked for Continental Can Co. for 30 years as a supervisor and retired in 1982.

He wintered in Lake Helen, Fla., for 15 years. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Menomonee Falls, Wis., for 42 years.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of the memorial Mass at noon on Saturday at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, N88 W17658 Christman Rd, Menomonee Falls, Wis. Private Interment will be at St. Wenceslaus Church Cemetery in Spillville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Harold Swehla's memory may be made to Good Shepherd's "Special Needs Fund" or St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville.

CARROLL ANDERSON

FOREST CITY - Carroll Anderson, 79, of Forest City, died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Doug Farrell officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City.

Carroll Stanley Anderson, the son of Albert Edgar Anderson and Mable Janneta (Myre) Anderson Thompson, was born Nov. 5, 1920, at the Anderson farmstead west of Forest City. He was led to the Lord by his Sunday School teacher at age 15 and was baptized shortly thereafter.

He was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City, where he enjoyed listening to the Awana children recite their Bible memory verses.

He was united in marriage to Ruth Florene Jefson on May 27, 1942, at the Methodist Church. They lived their entire married life around the Forest City community.

Carroll farmed most of his life, first on the family farm then the Steiff farm prior to buying the Wetterling farm northeast of Miller. Carroll retired from farming and worked for Home Lumber in Forest City until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; their daughters, Sonna Lea Hunsley and her husband, John, of Phoenix, Ariz., Marcele Kolwinska and her husband, Jerry, of Watertown, Wis., Lorene Posegate and her husband, Darrel, of Des Moines; and a son, Dennis Anderson and his wife, Karen, of Hudson; his grandchildren, Stephen and Kay Hunsley, David Hunsley, Jeremy and Joan Kolwinska, Levi Kolwinska, Jessica Kolwinska, Mike and Kami Sims, Bill Sims, Adam, Tyler and Michael Posegate and Joshua Anderson and Jillian Anderson; his siblings, Hazel Palmer, Evelyn Hanson, Marvin Anderson, Arden Anderson, Marilyn Sogard, Nancy Johnson; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Grace Hall and Janice Anderson; a brother, Merle Anderson; and half brother, Marlowe Anderson; and two half sisters, Lucille Winterrowd and Irene Fillman; a grandson, Mark Carroll Hunsley; and a nephew, Craig Johnson.

RUTH JOHNSON NUEHRING

MASON CITY - Ruth Johnson Nuehring, 99, of 1937 19th St. S.W., died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at the I.O.O.F. Home.

The funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Radio Ministry of St. James Lutheran Church.

Ruth Johnson Nuehring was born the first of nine children at Kanawha on Jan. 18, 1901, to John Axel and Taalena Brotton (Anderson) Johnson. She was baptized March 9, 1902, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on Nov. 18, 1915, by Pastor H.C. Holm at Kanawha.

On Oct. 2, 1919, Ruth married Otto A. Nuehring of Kanawha at his parents' home in Belmond. Their life together was spent farming at Kanawha, Belmond, Goodell, Mason City and Forest City, retiring to Mason City in 1968.

Ruth will be well remembered for her kind and generous spirit. Ruth was known as "Grandma Sugar Cookie" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to bake, sew, crochet, quilt and spending time with family and friends who knew her coffee pot was always on.

Ruth was a member of St. James Lutheran Church of Mason City for 61 years, Martha Circle, Friendship Society, and the Freeman Ladies Aid.

She is survived by her children, Orvall Nuehring and his wife, Virginia, of Mason City, Alice Rowe, of Mason City, Robert Nuehring and special friend, Mary Hamson, of Mason City, and Beulah Fairbanks and her husband, Richard, of Mason City; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Nuehring, of Clear Lake; son-in-law, Herb Steeke, of Perham, Minn.; 23 grandchildren, Larry Olthoff and his wife, Rose, Beverly Ames and her husband, Francis, Leigh Hintzen, Gilbert Hintzen, Randy Hintzen and his wife, Linda, Michael Nuehring and his wife, Barb, Don Nuehring and his wife, Francine, Karen Plagge, Brad Fairbanks and his wife, Pat, Patricia Grandy and her husband, Glenn, Julie Carpenter and her husband, Bob, Tim Nuehring, Kurt Nuehring and his wife, Kathy, Becky Wood and her husband, Tom, David Rowe, Kathy Newman and her husband, Tom, Debby Zobel and her husband, Gary, Sue Larson and her husband, Ed, Jody Thorson and her husband, Allen, Jim Nuehring, Sandy Besch and her husband, Steve, Tom Nuehring and his wife, Sabrina, and Nikki Flaten and her husband, Matt; 47 great-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Otto, in 1981; daughter, Lucille Steeke, in 1997; son, Wilbert Nuehring, in 1999; two sons-in-law, Joe Rowe, in 1998 and Henry Eichman, in 1943; three grandchildren, Kenneth Nuehring, Barbara Eichman and Steven Rowe; one great-grandchild, Mark Olthoff; one great-great-grandchild, Matthew Adkins; four brothers, John, Bert, Alfred and Carl Johnson; four sisters, Edith Johnson, Alice Hummel, Nora Perkins and Esther Hess.

CORA A. GERDES

WODEN - Cora A. Gerdes, 98, of Woden died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home in Cedar Falls.

Cora Agnes Gerdes, the daughter of Garrelt and Anna (Kuschel) Rieken, was born Nov. 21, 1901, on a farm near Woden. She attended school in Bingham Township and received her normal training teacher certificate at Waldorf College in Forest City. She taught in the rural schools of Bingham Township for nine years.

On March 15, 1930, she was married to John Gerdes at the Lutheran parsonage north of Woden. They farmed southeast of Woden until March of 1962, when they retired and moved to an acreage near Woden.

In 1990, Cora moved to Cedar Falls to live with her daughter. In 1991, she moved to the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home with her daughter, Audrey. She enjoyed gardening and reading.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and St. John's Lutheran Women.

She is survived by three children, Mary Leen and her husband, Mark, of Cedar Falls, Walter Gerdes and his wife, Jennie, of East Wenatchee, Wash., and Martha Kragel and her husband, Wendell, of Newell; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, on July 21, 1988; daughter, Audrey, on April 20, 1992; parents; and five brothers and sisters, Richard G. Rieken, Caroline Swan, Anna Green, Marie Rieken and Carl Rieken.

MICHAEL ROBERT MOON

CLEAR LAKE -Michael Robert Moon, 45, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) in an auto accident in Longview, Wash. He had recently moved to Longview with his son, Nick.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S. E. in Mason City, with Pastor David Anderson officiating.

Mike was born on Dec. 29, 1954, in Mason City, the son of Charles and Margaret Moon. He was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church and was a 1973 graduate of Mason City High School. He was employed as a carpenter in the Mason City and Clear Lake area for many years.

Mike was a devoted father to his three children, Sarah, Brian and Nick, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.

He is survived by his daughter, Sarah, of Post Falls, Idaho; and two sons, Brian and Nick, of Clear Lake; his mother, Marge Moon, of Mason City; three sisters, Lois Schwade and her husband, Gene, of Mason City, Sherry Wallis, of Farmington, Ark., and Debra Severson, of Mason City; one brother, Chuck Moon and his wife, Darla, of Osage; nieces and nephews, Justin Schwade, of Seattle, Wash., Jessica Schwade, of Mason City, Drew Wallis, of Farmington, Ark., Heather and Travis Severson, of Mason City, Ashley and Matt Moon, of Osage, and Brandon Moon, of Latimer. He is also survived by a very special friend, Terry Horton, her children and family, of Longview, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his father, Chuck Moon, in 1996; a niece, Krista Moon; and his grandparents.

Mike will be greatly missed by his children, family and many, many, friends.

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Betty Lavonne Easley, 76, of Cathedral City, Calif., died Oct. 21, 2000, in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

She was born April 24, 1924, to Leslie and LaVonne Paul Stevens in Iowa. She married Ebberly Leon Easley on Nov. 16, 1942 in Missouri.

She was an assembler with the Aerojet Co., an aerospace company, for 20 years.

She is survived by her husband, Ebberly, of Cathedral City; four sons, Ebberly Jr., of Milwaukee, Ore., Steven, of Indio, Ken of Cathedral City and Donald, of Reno, Nev.; three brothers, Larry Stevens, of Minden, Nev., Leslie Stevens, of Bullhead City, Ariz., and Richard Stevens, of Utah; her sister, Janet Sorenson, of West Covina; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation was held followed by the funeral service at the Ramon Chapel, Palm Springs Mortuary, in Cathedral City, Calif.

The family suggests donations to the Alzheimers Association in memory of Betty Lavonne Easley.

Vera E. Roberts was born on April 13, 1905, in rural Fairmont, Minn., the daughter of G. Curtiss and Addie E. (Boyce) Thompson. She graduated from Fairmont High School in 1923 and furthered her education at Mankato State Teachers College, St. Cloud Teachers College and Drake University, where she received her bachelor of arts degree.

She was united in marriage to Ray H. Roberts on Aug. 14, 1935, at the Methodist Church in Fairmont. She taught for 25 years in the Fairmont area schools.

In 1953 their family of four moved to Mason City, where she took a teaching position in the Plymouth schools.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Church Circle, Eagles, Singles Group and the Retired Education Personnel Association. She lived in Mason City until 1995, when she moved to Marshalltown to be closer to her family.

Her hobbies and interests included traveling, painting, sewing and playing the piano. Over the years of teaching she truly enjoyed reading the Laura Ingalls Wilder books to her students.

She will be greatly missed by her son, Dan D. Roberts and his wife, Regan, of Marshalltown; her daughter, Sherry Taylor and her husband, Tom, of Ann Arbor, Mich., Jerome Baker and his wife, Mary, of Texas; and Bruce Baker and his wife, Beverly, of Virginia; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, La Verne and Hugh; and one sister, Iona Baker.

YANKTON, S. D. - Nancy Lewis, 43, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 31, of heart failure at her residence.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garner, with the Rev. Clyde Kieschnick and the Rev. Bob Bronson officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery, Garner.

Nancy was born July 28, 1957, to Richard and Ilo Mae (Simons) Starry in Cedar Rapids. She grew up in the Maquoketa area and graduated from school in Iowa Falls.

On Jan. 13, 1978, she was blessed with the birth of a daughter, Jennifer. She worked as a medical aide at Duncan Heights in Garner and Opportunity Village in Clear Lake.

She married Steven R. Lewis on June 25, 1994, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garner.

Nancy was the assistant produce manager at Bill's Super Fair foodstore in Garner until July 1997, when she moved to Yankton, S.D., with her husband. During the three years in Yankton, she worked for Save-U-More foodstore and First Dakota National Bank.

During the last year and a half, she enjoyed sewing, cooking visiting family, adding to her toy collection and taking care of her dog, Lizzie. The most important characteristic of Nancy was her enthusiastic and positive attitude.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Garner and Garner AA.

Those who will cherish Nancy's memory are her husband, Steve of Yankton, S.D.; parents, Richard (Ilo Mae) Starry of Garner; a daughter, Jennifer Lewis of St. Cloud, Minn.; two stepsons, Justin Lewis of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Steven (Dori) Lewis of Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers, Shawn and Michael Starry of Garner; one sister Barb (Greg) Kruser of Maquoketa; and five nieces and nephews, Kathryn, Joe, Cody, Derek and Travis.

Nancy was preceded in death by her grandparents; and one niece, Carla Fadale.

Frank S. Kolberdanz was born Dec. 25, 1916, in Mankato, Minn. He served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1957. He farmed in Iowa for more than 25 years. After moving to Texas, Frank worked for General Mills Feed (now Cargill), retiring in 1978. He had a lifelong devotion to his family.

Frank is survived by his sons, Ron Kloberdanz and wife, Jo, Mike Kloberdanz and his wife, Judy, all of Fort Worth, Jim Kloberdanz and his wife, Sharon, of Azle, Texas, and Paul Kloberdanz of Grandbury, Texas; a daughter, Susan Farmer and her husband, David, of Azle; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, John and Alex Kloberdanz, both of California; and sisters, Margaret and Ann Lee, both of Iowa.

Loretta Bray Austin was born June 3, 1910, at Hanlontown, the daughter of Elmer and Ellen (Hauge) Bray. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In 1963 she became a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills and was very active in church circles.

Loretta attended grade school at Hanlontown and graduated from Hanlontown High School.

In March of 1944 she was united in marriage to Andy Austin at the Lutheran parsonage in Mason City. They lived and farmed on the Austin home farm near Thompson for 19 years. In December of 1962, they moved to Lake Mills.

Loretta is survived by one sister, Themla (Mrs. Olaf Lund) of Mankato, Minn; one sister-in-law, Genevieve Bray, of Osage; four nieces; and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Andy, on Jan. 5, 1991; and one brother, Alvin.

Ralph was born June 20, 1921 in Battle Creek, Iowa, the son of Ralph Charles and Olive Nailor Sr. He graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1939.

He served in the United States Navy during WWII. Ralph farmed for a year in the Ida Grove area.

Ralph married Gloria Lund in Ida Grove in June of 1946. He went to work for State Farm Insurance in Ida Grove as an agent from March, 1947 to May, 1956. In June, 1956 he moved to Cedar Rapids as a manager. He then moved to Clear Lake in January, 1973 where he was district manager of six counties. Ralph retired December 31, 1983.

Ralph and Huldina "Dina" (Scherb) Gray married Dec. 26, 1975 in Elk Point, S.D.

He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, reading, dancing, and playing cards. He taught insurance classes at NIACC in the late 70's. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, Life Underwriters, the Clear Lake V.F.W. and American Legion.

He worked as a nurses aid on the surgical floor at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for over 23 years. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting in her free time. She had been a resident of Good Shepherd Care Center for the past six years.

Survivors include one daughter, Pauline Brady, of Clear Lake; one grandson, Jim Brady, of Charles City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and three sisters.

Arthur Entner was born June 29, 1919 in Crystal Lake, Wisc., the son of Leonard and Mary (Kiefer) Entner. When he was five years old, the family moved to Mason City where he attended school.

He married Maxine L. Lindsay Aug. 17, 1940, in Northwood. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed by Interstate Power Company for 33 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, life member of the Veterans of Foreign War, life member of the Elks Lodge where he was past exalted ruler and the Electrical Brotherhood of America.

Art is survived by two sons, David Entner and wife, Marcia, of Naples, Fla., and Todd Entner and wife, Delores, of Garland, Texas; grandchildren, Melissa, Dixie, Christine, Brian and Jason; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucy Roneson, of Eau Claire, Wisc., and Edna Seeman, of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Maxine, four brothers, three sisters, and a child in infancy.

DARWIN 'DUSTY' RHOADES

ST. ANSGAR - Darwin "Dusty" Rhoades, 80, of St. Ansgar, passed away peacefully on Friday (Nov. 3, 2000) at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar, in the company of his wife, Alice.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar. Military honors will be by the Walter T. Enneberg Post No. 358 of the American Legion, St. Ansgar.

Dusty Rhoades was born March 28, 1920, at Council Bluffs, and adopted in infancy by Harry and Anna (Sward) Rhoades of Farnhamville. He was baptized and confirmed in the United Methodist Church of Farnhamville, later confirmed as an adult into the congregation of the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar. Dusty graduated from Farnhamville High School and then attended Hemphill Diesel Schools in Chicago. Following graduation, he worked in Milwaukee, Wis. He enlisted in the Navy and was sworn in on Navy Day (Oct. 20, 1942) by Gene Tunney. He attended school at Navy Pier in Chicago and then was sent to the Pacific area.

On a 30-day leave in September 1945, he married the love of his life, Alice Wirth, at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. He spent the next three years stationed in Tsingtao and Shanghai, China and Hong Kong. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in October 1948 and returned to St. Ansgar where he farmed until his retirement in 1982.

He loves sports, especially baseball and played on the town team, which played on Sunday afternoons against other teams from the local area. He was one of many people involved in the building of Saints Acres ball fields, using scavenged windmills from local farmers to build the light towers. When the bowling alley first came to St. Ansgar, he was among those who helped haul in the lanes. In 1963, facing the loss of the town's bowling alley when the lease ran out, he and his wife Alice built Cedar Lanes in St. Ansgar and ran it until 1970 when they sold it. They are credited with teaching many young people to bowl, instilling in them a lasting love of the sport.

They moved off the farm in 1968 to St. Ansgar. He was active in public service, serving terms on the City Council, School Board and as Deacon and Trustee of the First Lutheran Church. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion, serving in various offices including local, county and district commander and state vice-commander. Following a cardiac arrest at their summer home in Waterville, Minnesota, he entered the ICU at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota, where he suffered a stroke in August 1989. He was able to remain at home in the care of Alice, and with the help of Mitchell County Homemaker Service until September 1998, when he and his wife entered the Osage Rehab and Health Care Center. In August 2000 they came to the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

He leaves to mourn his wife of 55 years, Alice and their three children, son, Duane and wife, Lois of Loves Park, Ill., son, Raymond and wife, Palma of Kennesaw, Ga.; and daughter, Vicki and husband, Steve Ross of Pennington, Minn.; five grandsons, Duane Rhoades, Jr. and wife, Joann of Rockford, Ill., Paul Rhoades of Athens, Ga., Barrett Rhoades of Kennesaw, Ga., and Forrest and Axel Ross of Pennington, Minn.

Memorials may be given to the American Legion Foundation and Lutheran Social Services of Iowa.

LAWRENCE HANSON

MASON CITY - Lawrence Hanson, 73, 803 Ninth Avenue North, Northwood, and formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Nov. 3, 2000) at the Northwood Care Center.

A memorial funeral service for Lawrence Hanson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the chapel of the First Lutheran Church, Northwood with the Rev. Allan Stoa, visitation pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Concord Cemetery, Garner.

There will be no visitation. The Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence Hanson was born Oct. 28, 1927, in Tenold, Brookfield Township, near Northwood, the son of Albert E. and Ella Florence (Anonson) Hanson. He attended the Brookfield Township School. During World War II, he served his country as a private in the former Army Air Corps (now the Air Force). Upon his return, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Ann Isma Ferleman on Aug. 28, 1949, at the former Bristol Lutheran Church, Bristol.

For 25 years, he was a faithful employee of the Decker Meat Packing Company in Mason City. He retired in 1975. He was a former member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Mason City and currently maintained his membership at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City. People held a great interest for Lawrence, as he loved to talk and be with his many friends and relatives. His upbringing on the farm and his work at Decker's led to an admiration of raising pigs. In his later years, he enjoyed sharing his artistic side with friends and family by sending them pictures that he had colored.

Lawrence is survived by nine nieces and nephews; 10 great nieces and nephews; and several cousins and friends who will miss his company.

Lawrence is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Phyllis, who died Aug. 9, 1994, and his twin brother, LeRoy, who died Aug. 19, 1999.

AGATHA W. HINES

MASON CITY - Agatha W. Hines, 76, of 610 S. Louisiana, died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

No visitation will be held. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Agatha was born in Mallard, on Nov. 7, 1923, to William Henry and Viola White. She graduated from Mallard High School in 1941 where she was active in music, drama, and basketball. The girl's basketball team she played on went to the state championship all four years she participated. She graduated from Hamilton Business College and worked for Reed Music Store and First National Bank.

On May 28, 1944, she married William H. Hines at the Methodist Church in Mallard. She worked for Bergland and Bianco Architects for several years and for the Department of Transportation for about ten years, until she retired because of her health. She taught Sunday School for many years at First United Methodist Church, and was active in Circle and Bible study groups.

Those left to cherish her memory are: her husband of 56 years, William H. Hines, Mason City; her mother, Viola White, of Mallard; sisters, Leona Henderson, of Plover, Jeanne Burke, of Fort Dodge, and Jeanette Schultz, of Mason City; sons, William Hines Jr. and wife, Dana, of Houston, Texas and Charles Hines, of Omaha, Neb.; daughter, Linda McCollum, of Mason City; six grandchildren, Britton, Benjamin, and Christopher Hines, Michael and Melody McCollum, and Melinda McCollom-Fugatt; and one great grandchild, Alex Andre.

She was preceded in death by her father.

MYRTLE GORDON

KENSETT - Myrtle Gordon, 87, of Kensett, died Friday (Nov. 3, 2000) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Kensett with the Rev. Selmer Hernes officiating. Burial will be in the Kensett Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, Northwood.

Myrtle was born on Nov. 2, 1913 in Grafton, the daughter of George and Randy (Trustem) Gillerman. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She completed the eighth grade and then attended the Lutheran Church School in Grafton.

Myrtle met Lawrence Gilman Gordon at a wedding dance in Manly and two years later, on Sept. 2, 1937 they were married in a double ceremony with Lawrence's brother, Gaylord and Marie Gordon in Rapid City, S.D.

Myrtle was always one to pitch in and help, whether it be helping her husband on the farm, or helping a friend or neighbor, or helping out at the church. She always enjoyed the fellowship that is the reward of being a giving and caring person and never complained about the work. Happy is a word most people would use to describe Myrtle's personality. A friend was always welcomed into her home with a hug and a smile.

Church was a very important part of Myrtle's life and she was active in Circle and Ladies' Aid. Music was also a source of peace and strength to her. She loved playing the organ and singing hymns. She was a part of the Worth County Chorus for several years. She demonstrated her care and patience in the beautiful needlework she created. Her good friend, also a fine embroidery person, remarked on the way Myrtle could make delicate and precise stitches that results in a piece of needlework that was as lovely on the back as on the front. Her other interests included taking care of her yard and flowers, and traveling with her husband in their trailer. They traveled throughout the United States, especially Florida and the West.

She will be missed by many. The family members left to mourn her passing are: sons, Dean Gordon and his wife, Phyllis, of Northwood and Roger Gordon and his wife, Debbie, of Hudson; daughter, Laura Greenlund and husband, Gary, of Kensett; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, her parents, her brother, Lloyd Gillerman, and her two sisters, Mabel Kirchgatter and Verna Doscher.
