HELEN M. ROTHS

GARNER - Helen M. Roths, 71, of Garner died Tuesday (November 14, 2000) at her home.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Presbyterian Church with Pastor Roger Kallem officiating. Interment will be at Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner with a VFW Auxiliary service at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Helen Margaret Roths, the daughter of Thor and Helena (Espe) Jacobsen, was born Dec. 2, 1928, on a farm near Garner. She attended school and graduated from Garner High School in 1946.

On Dec. 29, 1956, she was married to Robert Roths at the Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Neb. They made their home in Garner where Helen lived her entire life.

She worked for Iowa Electric Light and Power Company for 12 years and then worked the next 30 years at Hancock County Coop Oil, retiring in 1991.

She enjoyed her family, gardening and caring for her dogs. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and VFW Auxiliary.

Helen is survived by her husband, Robert, of Garner; a daughter, Darcey Folkerts and her fiancé, Bob McAvoy, of Naperville, Ill., and her two children, Marni and her special friend, Chris Gordon, and Troy; a son, Rob Roths and his wife, Lori, of Garner, and their children, Sadie, Cole and Lindsay; a brother, Pete Jacobsen and his wife, Jean, of Montrose, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Emmanuel and Elvin Jacobsen; and a half-sister, Lillian Cunningham.

KENNETH IVEL HARDING

ST. ANSGAR - Kenneth Ivel Harding, 80, formerly of Mason City, died on Friday (Nov. 10, 2000) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Ted Stowers of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Kenneth was born on July 1, 1920, in Riceville, Iowa, to Ivel and Merle (Brown) Harding. He graduated from Riceville High School in Riceville.

He was employed in Riceville and St. Ansgar Electric & Appliance in the late '40s to early '60s. He was manager in sales and service in Charles City, Waterloo, Albert Lea and Spencer stores. Kenneth retired from Mason City Tile & Marble, but continued to service sewing machines until his health failed.

Kenneth served in the U.S. Army Air Force, serving from 1942 to 1948. He entered the service at Camp Dodge, Iowa on Oct. 21, 1942. He worked for Air Transport base as mechanic on B-25; C47; C-64 and L-5 aircraft. He was on flying status as aerial engineer for 25 months in China-Burma-India. He participated in the China-Central-Burma and India-Burma battles and campaigns.

He was entitled to wear a Victory Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon and four overseas bars. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant from the 1352nd AAF Base Unit. He was a member of the China-Burma-India Veterans Association of Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Maxine Newhouse, and longtime friend, Frances Peshak.

Kenneth is survived by one sister, Doris Wells of St. Ansgar; one nephew, Philip Wells of St. Ansgar; one niece, Pam Lundt of Alcester, S.D.; and several great-nieces and nephews.

IRENE E. (MCDONNELL) DANNEWITZ

BELMOND - Irene E. (McDonnell) Dannewitz, 83, of Belmond passed away Wednesday (Nov. 15, 2000) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, near Belmond.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. There will be a parish rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

WILHELMINA B. PAULLUS

LATIMER - Wilhelmina B. Paullus of Latimer died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton at the age of 93 years.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Latimer, with the Rev. Randall Bell officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Latimer.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home in Latimer.

Wilhelmina Bertha Borcherding Paullus was born on Feb. 2, 1907, at Hamilton Township in Franklin County on a farm located near rural Coulter, Iowa. Her parents were (Heinrick) Henry Borcherding and Caroline Louise (Lizzie) Rodemeyer. She was educated at a nearby country school and later the Borcherding family moved to Hampton where Wilhelmina graduated from Hampton High School in 1925.

She was married to Edwin George Paullus on Dec. 31, 1928, at Mason City, Iowa. They began married life on the Paullus farm in Latimer, later relocating to a farm northwest of Alexander. Then they resettled onto a farmstead situated in Scott Township, northwest of Latimer.

In 1950, the family moved into a new home they built, farming here for an additional 20 years. In 1970, Wilhelmina and Edwin built another home in Latimer. Edwin preceded her in death on Dec. 2, 1975.

Throughout Wilhelmina's lifetime, she was an active member in her church. She participated in Ladies Mission Society, Cemetery Society and enjoyed singing in the church choir. She was also active in the Franklin County & Scott Township Farm Bureau and after retiring to Latimer, she served on the Latimer Retirement Home Development Board and was busily involved with Park Society and attended Senior Citizens. Wilhelmina entered the Extended Care Center in Hampton in 1997.

Wilhelmina is survived by her sons, Gordon Paullus and his wife, Naomi, of Des Moines and Wayne and his wife, Kay, of Newton; three grandchildren, Andrea Paullus Gregov of Wichita, Kansas., Tara Paullus Hackett of Omaha, Neb., and Tom Paullus of Dallas, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Damon and Natalie Gregov and Emily and Mary Kate Hackett; several nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by a number of cousins and friends with whom she played card games, reminisced and socialized together.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her first born infant son, a grandson, four brothers and five sisters.

VIRGINIA J. ANDERSON

MASON CITY - Virginia J. Anderson, 80, of Mason City died Wednesday (Nov. 15, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Thomas Healey, chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

RALPH W. LIVINGSTON

MASON CITY - Ralph W. Livingston, 86, of 2501 West State Street, died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wayne Ryan officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Ralph was born Aug. 16, 1914, in Russell, the son of George and Clara (Baker) Livingston. He completed high school in Wessington Springs, S.D. Ralph served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He married Opal Hammond Sept. 1, 1940, in Northwood. He worked for Northwestern States Portland Cement Company for 26 years, retiring Feb. 1, 1980. After his first wife, Opal, died in 1961 he married Polly Wiltsie on March 20, 1964. He was a member of Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, gardening and woodworking.

Ralph is survived by a daughter, Sally Livingston Baggett and husband, Jeffrey, of Fairfield, Calif.; son, David Livingston and wife, Leona, of Oronoco, Minn.; son, Paul Livingston of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; daughter, Carol Livingston and companion, Fay, of Lincoln Park, Mich.; step-daughter, Beverly Hudson and husband, Leslie, of Fort Worth, Texas; step-son, Kenneth Wiltsie and wife, Carol, of Mason City; step-daughter, Sue Hasfjord and husband, Soren, of Farmers Branch, Texas; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Ray Livingston and wife, Ellen, of Webster, Wis., brother, Dr. Herbert Livingston and wife, Maria, of Wilmore, Ky.; sister, Dorothy Johnson and husband, Fay, of Springbrook, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Opal, second wife, Polly, two brothers, Harold and Floyd, and two sisters, Leta and Vera.

ALMA BURMEISTER

MANKATO, Minn. - Alma Burmeister, 88, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at the Oak Lawn Health Care Center in Mankato, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Paul L. Finger of St. Paul Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, with a Moose Memorial Service at 6:30 p.m.

Alma was born Dec. 2, 1911, the daughter of Frederick and Anna (Eihlers) Robeoltman, on the home farm near Rockwell. She attended school in Rockwell and later graduated from Rockwell High School. Following her schooling, she worked as an LPN at the Story Hospital for many years.

On Sept. 9, 1939, Alma was united in marriage to Bill Burmeister on the family farm. The couple lived and worked many years in the area. In June of 1997 Alma moved to Mankato, Minn., to be closer to her daughter.

Alma had a passion for taking care of others. She also found joy in gardening, especially nurturing her violets. She loved to play cards, dabble in crocheting and baking goodies for everyone to enjoy.

Alma was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mason City, and the Women of the Moose.

Those thankful for having shared in Alma's life include her son, George Burmeister and his wife, Ginger, of New Caney, Texas; daughter, Louise Enright of St. Clair, Minn.; one brother, Fred Robeoltman of Rockwell; five grandchildren; John Enright and his wife, Kim, Mark Enright and his wife, Nicole, William Burmeister, Shawn Burmeister and his wife, Jenifer, and Ashley Burmeister; nine great-grandchildren; Elizabeth Enright, Hailee Enright, Tyler Enright, Kaitlyn Enright, Chloe Enright Spencer Burmeister, Brandon Burmeister, Marcie Burmeister, W.T. Burmeister, and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Burmeister was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill, in 1980, six sisters, Martha, Lena, Emma, Gertrude, Anna and Marie; and one brother in infancy, Henry; and one cousin, Ferdinand Miller.

ELSIE M. GRANEY

MASON CITY - Elsie M. Graney, 76, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Mason City, passed away on Monday (Nov. 13, 2000) at the home of Kevin and Pam Graney in Rockford, Ill., after a brief, courageous battle with cancer. She passed on with her family and friends by her side and with the dignity she lived with throughout her life.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 2502 Jefferson Ave. South, Mason City, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 9:30 until service time on Saturday at the church.

The family of Elsie M. Graney has requested that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Northern Illinois in her memory.

Elsie M. Graney was born on Aug. 13, 1924, in Crystal Lake, the daughter of Martin and Sada (Christenson) Nelson. She attended and received her education in the Crystal Lake School system, graduating from Crystal Lake High School. She also attended and graduated from Hamilton Business College.

She was united in marriage to Jack Clifton Graney on Sept. 15, 1946, in Mason City. He preceded her in death on May 14, 1997. Elsie and her husband spent summers in Iowa and winters in Tucson, Ariz., with her best friend, Samantha, her Yorkie. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mason City, Veterans of Foreign War and Ladies Auxiliary, she also worked for G4-OSS during World War II (the present day CIA) and retired from Culver Hahn/Design Lighting in Mason City. Elsie was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend and was an avid golfer.

Left to cherish her memory include her sons, Kelly Graney and wife, Karen, of Hampton, Kevin Graney and wife, Pam, of Rockford, Ill.; daughter, Karla Strong and husband, Kent, of Aurora, Colo.; granddaughters, Alison Strong and Jacqueline Graney; grandsons, Matthew Strong, Kyle, Kasey and Kevin Graney; great-granddaughter, Taylor Graney; brother, Jim Nelson and wife, Gwen, of Tucson, Ariz.; sister, Alyee Chally of Algona; sister-in-law, Barbara Sasse of Minneapolis, Minn.; brother-in-law, Jerry Graney of Mason City; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, mother and father, and three sisters, Nita Peterson, Rae Chandler and Mildred Vandaworker.

A very sincere thanks to Pastor Richard J. Meier of Alpine Lutheran Church, the doctors and staff at the OSF Center of Cancer Care. A very special thanks to Arlene, Dee Dee and Kasha of OSF Home Health Care and NIHA, Debbie Roum and nurses, Pat, Pat, Regina and Debi for their tender loving care.

EDWARD F. JASZEWSKI

WINONA, Minn. - Edward F. Jaszewski, 83, of 519 Chatfield St., Winona, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona, Minn., with the Rev. Daniel R. Dernek officiating. Preliminary services will be held 10:30 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Service in Winona, with a Harvest House prayer service at 6:30 p.m. and a Christian wake service at 8 p.m.

Edward F. Jaszewski was born July 22, 1917, in Winona, the son of John and Anna (Kulas) Jaszewski. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Audrey R. Lamoreux on Feb. 10, 1945, in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona.

He was a sheet metal worker at Winona Heating & Ventilating Co. Prior to that he was in the home heating oil business for 20 years.

He was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish and its Holy Name Society and Harvest House. He was an usher and was active in many church activities.

Ed was an avid gardener and fisherman. He was well known for his tomatoes and beautiful flowers. Ed also enjoyed woodworking and did a lot of furniture reupholstering.

He is survived by his loving wife, Audrey of Winona, Minn.; six children, Ann Kuklinski and her husband, Andrew, of Nashville, Tenn., John W. Jaszewski and his wife, Nancy, of Mason City, Ronald Jaszewski and his wife, Jolinda, of Winona, Minn., Jane Warneke and her husband, Owen, of Winona, Minn., Joyce Geilow and her husband, Gregory, of Eyota, Minn., and Paul Jaszewski of Winona, Minn.; 14 grandchildren, Jodi, Beth, Andrew Jr., Andy, Aaron, Amy, Angie, Adam, Joseph, Ellen, Paul, Michael, Nathan and Heidi; four great-grandchildren, Megan, Nicholas, Alec and Jessica; four sisters, Marie Laska (Saint Anne Hospice) of Winona, Minn., Eleanor Wooden and her husband, William, of Coon Rapids, Minn., Ann Lipinski, and her husband, Francis, of Winona, Minn., and Verna Kleinschmidt and her husband, James, of Hastings, Minn.; and two brothers, Frank Jaszewski and his wife, Betty, and John Jaszewski and his wife, Susie, both of Winona, Minn.

CLARETTA HOVEL

MANLY - Claretta Hovel, 79, of Manly died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center after many years of battling Parkinsons disease.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Plymouth, with Father Thomas McAndrew officiating. Burial will be in the Bohemian Section of the Plymouth Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel in Manly, with a scriptural wake service at 6 p.m.

Claretta was born May 12, 1921, in Ottawa, Kan., the daughter of Earl and Elma (McLaughlin) Hovel. The family moved to Plymouth, Iowa, and Claretta graduated from Plymouth High School in 1940.

On Oct. 13, 1941, she was united in marriage with Arthur Hovel at Sacred Heart Church in Manly. They farmed the Hovel family farm west of Plymouth for 25 years and raised two children. They moved to Plymouth in 1966 and Claretta worked at the Plymouth Café for 12 years.

She was a member of St. Michael's Church and St. Michael's Guild. She enjoyed her garden and her flowers and the many birds that would visit their home. She enjoyed cooking and baking and Sunday dinners with her children and grandchildren.

Claretta became a resident of the Manly Nursing & Rehab in the fall of 1991. She enjoyed the birds in the aviary and tended the plants and flowers around the home, when she was able. She looked forward to visits from family and friends.

Those thankful in having shared in her life are her son, Michael, of Plymouth; her daughter, Marjorie Huntley and her husband, Wayne, of Rockwell; grandchildren, Melissa and Dani Dahl of River Falls, Wis., Mark Johnson of Mason City, Shawn and Micky Hovel of Marshalltown, Tracy and Joel Bolar of Marshalltown, and Misty Hovel of Marshalltown; six great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Coffin and her husband, George, of Carroll, Iowa, and Dee Reynolds, of Sarasota, Fla.; two brothers-in-law, Leo Hovel and his wife, Dorothy, of Manly and Reuben Hovel of Manly; as well as many nieces and nephews and friends, and the nurses and aides at the care center and her dear friend and roommate of many years, Flora Westendorf.

Carletta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; three sisters, Helen, Darlene and Lola.

JANETTE A. TOWER

GREENE -Funeral services for Janette A. Tower, 72, of 2057 Floyd Line Road, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, with the Rev. Galen E. Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene.

Janette Ann Coleman was born Sept. 7, 1928, in Staples, Todd County, Minnesota, a daughter of Marion and Dorothy (Riley) Coleman, and died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

She received her education in the Staples Public Schools and was a member of the National Honor Society graduating in 1946. She attended and graduated from Moorhead State College in 1950 with a bachelor of arts degree in teaching. Her first teaching assignment was in Detroit Lakes, Minn.

On July 1, 1951, she was united in marriage to her college sweetheart, David B. Tower, at the Methodist Church in Staples. Janette taught in Royalton, Minn., for one year and in Staples for three years before they moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She taught in Cedar Rapids for two years and after that remained home to raise her two sons. They moved to Greene in 1971 when Dave purchased the local pharmacy. Janette taught part-time for several years in the Greene Community School District.

Janette was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She kept apprised of what her family was doing and oftentimes traveled to see them wherever they were. Janette and Dave also enjoyed their special trips through the United States, Alaska and Europe. Her special interests included playing bridge, going shopping and adding pieces to her Hummel collection.

She was past president of the Greene Community School Board, past president of the Greene Historical Society, member of Chapter CC P.E.O. Sisterhood, Ladies Embroidery club, Greene Woman's Club and the Round Grove Golf and Country Club. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene where she was a member of the Board of Trustees and was a member of the Presbyterian Women.

Those thankful for having shared Janette's life are her loving husband, David, of Greene; two sons, Jeff, of Hemet, Calif., and Steve and his wife, Karla, of Sloan, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jonathon, Justin, Jamie, Erin and Amanda; one sister, Karen and her husband, Buzz Demmon, of Stacy, Minn.; and two brothers, Loren and his wife, Sandy Coleman, of San Juan Capistrano, and Donald "Bud" and his wife, Sharon Coleman, of Marietta, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

VIRGINIA J. ANDERSON

MASON CITY - Virginia J. Anderson, 80, of 521 15th St. N.W., died Wednesday (Nov. 15, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Virginia J. Anderson was born Jan. 30, 1920, in Mason City, the daughter of Samuel and Olga (Olick) Sazanovich. She graduated from Mason City in 1938.

She was united in marriage to Emory S. Anderson on Nov. 6, 1948, in Mason City. She worked at the VFW for many years. Following the VFW she worked at AMPI (Associated Milk Producers Incorporated).

Virginia enjoyed reading, following politics and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Emory S. Anderson Jr. and his wife, Teresa, and his children, Allissa and Ashley Anderson, all of Mason City; her daughter, Andee Anderson of Mason City; one brother, Donald Sazanovich of Mason City; a niece, Verdine Erickson of Mason City; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and one brother.

MASON CITY - Vernon S. Lane, 86, of 706 Eighth St. N.E., died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Vernon S. Lane was born on Aug. 24, 1914, in Lawton, the son of Delbert C. and Daisy E. (Slye) Lane. His family moved to Plainview, Neb., when he was quite young. Following the death of his father, the family moved to Sloan, Iowa, to be closer to family. He graduated from Sloan High School and furthered his education at Northwestern University School of Business in Chicago, Ill.

He was united in marriage to Virginia Skolar on Sept. 1, 1945, at St. Basil's Catholic Church in Chicago, Ill. After their marriage they moved to Mason City.

He started his career leasing trucks to State Brand Creamery. Later he and his brother purchased Beeline Garage and afterwards founded Lane Bros Inc. with branches in Mason City, Fort Dodge and Waterloo.

Vernon was a former Rotarian and Elks member. He attended Holy Family Catholic Church. He found a great deal of pleasure in his work, never having a need to retire. He also enjoyed flying which he began in 1939, hunting and fishing.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 55 years, Virginia Lane of Mason City; two daughters, Janet Rowley and her husband, David, of Houston, Texas, and Brenda K. Reily of Onalaska, Texas; four grandchildren, Brianna and Alexis Reily and Caitlin and Erik Rowley; and several nieces and nephews.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; a son-in-law, Stephen Rowley; and a brother, Terrence C. Lane.

Irene Elizabeth (McDonnell) Dannewitz was born at Whittemore on May 7, 1917, the daughter of Thomas and Mary King McDonnell. She attended Presentation Academy in Whittemore and graduated in 1935. She then attended beauty school in Waterloo, becoming a beautician. She operated beauty shops in Algona, Cherokee and Belmond.

Irene was united in marriage to Mervin Dannewitz on Jan. 2, 1939, at Whittemore. The marriage was blessed with six children. Irene was a loving and devoted mother. Her children were her pride and joy as she truly cherished her family. Her kind disposition and friendly ways will always be remembered by her family and many friends.

Irene is survived by her husband, Mervin "Danny," her children, Betty of Hazelton, Karen and her husband, Richard Floy, of Thornton, John and his wife, Beverly, of Napa, Calif., Mike and his wife, Karen, of Mesa, Ariz., Mark and his wife, Shannon, of Elk Grove, Calif., and Randy and his wife, Lyndi, of Sebastopol, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Zeta Turner of Ames.

Jody Rene`e Mace, the daughter of Richard Foster and Judy Rae (Odland) Johnson, was born Nov. 13, 1967, at Waterloo. She attended school at Garner where she graduated from high school in 1986. She continued her education at UNI in Cedar Falls and ISU at Ames, graduating with a degree in management of information systems.

On Aug. 4, 1990, she married Steven Mace at Pilot Knob State Park near Forest City. They lived in Perry, Iowa; Denver, Colo.; Aspen, Colo.; and Savage, Minn., before moving to Garner in July 2000. She worked as a computer programmer for Data Base Ideas.

Jody enjoyed her family, camping, downhill skiing and playing on the computer.

She is survived by her husband, Steve; their children, Cody and Cassidy of Garner; her parents, Rick and Judy Johnson of Garner; four brothers and sisters, Cindy Hestad and her husband, Kevin, and their children, Sophia and Emma, of Burnsville, Minn., Chad Johnson and his wife, Tahnya, and their two sons, Chet and Luke, of Wasilla, Alaska, Corey Johnson and his wife, Dena, and their son, Seth, of Ankeny and Jessica Roberts and her husband, Craig of Burnsville, Minn.; her paternal grandparents, John and Eva Johnson, of Kanawha; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

LAKE MILLS - Ernest S. Helgeson, 82, died Thursday (Nov. 16, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Unit, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with the Rev. Roger Dykstra and the Rev. Sara Beth Akre officiating. Burial will be at Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills, with military rites by Lake Mills American Legion Otto/Chose Post No. 235.

Ernest Sylvan Helgeson was born on Oct. 13, 1918, near Joice, the son of Elias and Sophia (Egge) Helgeson. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice. After completing his education, he was employed by neighboring farmers until being called to serve in the U.S. Army in World War II.

He joined the U.S. Army on Oct. 16, 1942, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 30, 1945. He took his training at Fort Knox, Ky., and Fort Lewis, Wash., and in England. He served in the 735th tank battalion in the Third Army under Gen. George Patton.

He was the gunner of a Sherman tank in five major battles including Normandy beaches and the Battle of the Bulge. Some of the medals he earned were the Presidential Unit Citation, World War II Good Conduct, European, African and Middle Eastern Campaign with five battle stars, Liberation of France, Croix De Guerre from Belgium (Battle of the Bulge), Liberty Medal from Normandy and African Campaign medal. He was proud to have served his country for three years.

On Oct. 14, 1951, he married Fern Kaasa at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice. He farmed and had a corn shelling and grain trucking business. He was skilled at keeping his farm machinery repaired. He kept himself informed by reading newspapers, news magazines, listening to the radio and watching television. They lived in Joice.

In November 1985 they moved to Lake Mills. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and the Lake Mills Otto/Chose American Legion Post No. 235.

Survivors include his wife, Fern, of Lake Mills; three daughters, Janet Bye and her husband, Howard, of San Antonio, Texas, Emily Vetter and her husband, Harold, of Rochester, Minn., and Linda Toussaint and her husband, Michael, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; six grandchildren, David and Julie Bye, Sarah and Rachel Vetter, and Andrew and Brandon Toussaint; and one sister, Esther Jones and her husband, Otis, of Norwalk, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Leonard; and one sister, Ida Otterstad.

Hazel Hilda Trainer was born on May 11, 1915, the daughter of Axel and Maria (Nordstrom) Carlson. In 1916 her family moved north of Bolan. She received her education in the Northwood school system, graduating from Northwood High School. Hazel also attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. After completing her schooling, she taught in Bolan, Deer Creek, Cerro Gordo County near Portland.

She was united in marriage to Lowell Trainer on March 15, 1941, in Bolan. He preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 1988.

After their marriage, she continued to teach school in Howard County until they moved to Worth County and farmed south of Northwood, then moved to Northwood in the fall of 1975. Hazel also worked for the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood and the Worth County Homemakers.

She enjoyed reading, embroidering and music, but her great love and enjoyment was her family.

She was a member of United Methodist Church and the church circle in Northwood, a member of the Worth County chorus, former long-time member at the Bolan United Methodist Church and a member of their choir.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Jim Trainer and his wife, Sandy, of Northwood and Steve Trainer and his wife, Jane, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Chris Trainer of Burnsville, Minn., Jill Trainer of Northwood, Jolene Cotter and her husband, Marty, of Northwood, and Jason Trainer of Northwood; five great-grandchildren, Courtney Davis, Kathryn Davis, Jordan Cotter, Brady Cotter and Tegan Cotter; a sister, Dorothy Perkins and her husband, Ole, of Northwood; three sisters-in-law, Pearl Carlson of Pasco, Wash., Dorothy Trainer of Mason City, and Nona Wilson of Tucson, Ariz.; and a brother-in-law, Bill Eckert of New Port Richey, Fla.

MANLY - Claretta Hovel, 79, of Manly died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center after many years of battling Parkinsons disease.

Claretta was born May 12, 1921, in Ottawa, Kan., the daughter of Earl and Elma (McLaughlin) Clark. The family moved to Plymouth, Iowa, and Claretta graduated from Plymouth High School in 1940.

On Oct. 13, 1941, she was united in marriage with Arthur Hovel at Sacred Heart Church in Manly. They farmed the Hovel family farm west of Plymouth for 25 years and raised two children. They moved to Plymouth in 1966 and Claretta worked at the Plymouth Café for 12 years.

She was a member of St. Michael's Church and St. Michael's Guild. She enjoyed her garden and her flowers and the many birds that would visit their home. She enjoyed cooking and baking and Sunday dinners with her children and grandchildren.

Claretta became a resident of the Manly Nursing & Rehab in the fall of 1991. She enjoyed the birds in the aviary and tended the plants and flowers around the home, when she was able. She looked forward to visits from family and friends.

Those thankful in having shared in her life are her son, Michael, of Plymouth; her daughter, Marjorie Huntley and her husband, Wayne, of Rockwell; grandchildren, Melissa and Dani Dahl of River Falls, Wis., Mark Johnson of Mason City, Shawn and Micky Hovel of Marshalltown, Tracy and Joel Bolar of Marshalltown, and Misty Hovel of Marshalltown; six great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Coffin and her husband, George, of Carroll, Iowa, and Dee Reynolds, of Sarasota, Fla.; two brothers-in-law, Leo Hovel and his wife, Dorothy, of Manly and Reuben Hovel of Manly; as well as many nieces and nephews and friends, and the nurses and aides at the care center and her dear friend and roommate of many years, Flora Westendorf.

ST. ANSGAR - Clifford Daniel Warrington, 84, of 203 N. Main in St. Ansgar, died Thursday (Nov. 16, 2000) at the Good Samaritan Home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be at First Lutheran Cemetery, with military rites by the Walter T. Enneberg Post 358.

Clifford was born in Jefferson County, Kan., on Nov. 2, 1916, the son of Benjamin and Kate Rumbaugh Warrington. He lived there with his five brothers and two sisters, being educated in schools in Jefferson County.

In 1935 he made his home in Mitchell County, living for a year with his uncle and family, the Harvey Warringtons, near Osage. Clifford was baptized and confirmed in 1937 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Osage.

On May 2, 1941, he was drafted into military service and assigned to Company H, 168th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 34th Division (Red Bull) United States Army. He trained in Camp Claiborne, La. On March 1, 1942, he arrived in Northern Ireland where his regiment was assigned to the British Commandos for amphibious training in Scotland.

In November of 1942, the regiment invaded North Africa, then in September of 1943, they landed in Salerno, Italy, pushed north through Italy and on March 21, 1945, he returned to the United States on rotation after 649 combat days. He received his honorable discharge on June 30, 1945, and was awarded four Bronze Stars for Algerian, Tunisian, Naples-Foggia, and Rome-Arno Campaigns.

On Oct. 6, 1945, Clifford and Ardella Groth, of St. Ansgar, were united in marriage at the First Lutheran Church by the Rev. O.A. Langehough. They established their home in Osage, and in 1952 moved to St. Ansgar.

Clifford was employed by Elgin Enabnit, took GI training in plumbing, heating and sheet metal work at Johnson Plumbing and Heating in Osage, where he was employed until January of 1952. He then was employed by Hans Borsheim of St. Ansgar Plumbing and Heating and worked for Mr. Borsheim until March of 1953, when he purchased the business from Mr. Borsheim. He served the surrounding community until he retired in November of 1981, and then sold his business in February of 1982 to Dan and Wanda Warrington.

Clifford was a member of the Lions Club, Sons of Norway, and life member of American Legion and V.F.W. He was active in the First Lutheran Church and in volunteer work in Mitchell County and St. Ansgar.

He is survived by his wife, Ardella; brothers, Charles E. Warrington, of Gibbon, Neb., and T. Bentley Warrington, of San Benito, Texas; and a brother-in-law, Claire Groth, of Minnetonka, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Mary Lou Robbins-Wells lost her courageous battle with cancer on Thursday (Nov. 16, 2000). She was surrounded in love by her family as she passed away at the home of her daughter, on the farm where she grew up.

Mary Lou, the daughter of Louis and Louise (Haupt) Loth, was born Dec. 26, 1937, on a farm near Ventura. She weighed 3 pounds 3 ounces. They moved to the Haupt homestead south of Belmond in 1940 and she attended the Belmond schools.

She was united in marriage to Eugene Robbins in 1954 and to this union four children were born. Mary was a homemaker most of her life and also worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City.

She enjoyed gardening, canning and raised dogs and horses. In 1978, they moved to California, where she sold Avon and won many awards.

She married Arthur Wells in 1994 in Riverside, Calif. She enjoyed Jazzercise and shopping. She loved her dog "Precious" and her many friends.

Those thankful for sharing her life and rejoicing in her peace are her husband, Art Wells, of Riverside, Calif.; her children, daughter, Lu Jeanne Fink and her husband, Ron, of Belmond, daughter, Jolene Robbins, of Belmond, son, Bradley Robbins and his wife, Georgia, of Forest City and son, Brian Robbins and his wife, Glenda, of Clear Lake; parents, Louis and Louise Loth, of Belmond; sister, Karen Rasmussen, of Des Moines; grandchildren, Amanda and Loren Robbins, and Sara, Tiffany and Bob Fink; and nephews, Rodney and Robbie Rasmussen.

MASON CITY - Vernon S. Lane, 86, of 706 Eighth St. N.E., died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation was held Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, and will continue one hour before the service at the church today.

Vernon S. Lane was born on Aug. 24, 1914, in Lawton, the son of Delbert C. and Daisy E. (Slye) Lane. His family moved to Plainview, Neb., when he was quite young. Following the death of his father, the family moved to Sloan to be closer to family. He graduated from Sloan High School and furthered his education at Northwestern University School of Business in Chicago, Ill.

He was united in marriage to Virginia Skolar on Sept. 1, 1945, at St. Basil's Catholic Church in Chicago. After their marriage they moved to Mason City.

He started his career leasing trucks to State Brand Creamery. Later he and his brother purchased Beeline Garage and afterwards founded Lane Bros Inc. with branches in Mason City, Fort Dodge and Waterloo.

Vernon was a former Rotarian and Elks member. He attended Holy Family Catholic Church. He found a great deal of pleasure in his work, never having a need to retire. He also enjoyed flying, which he began in 1939, hunting and fishing.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 55 years, Virginia Lane of Mason City; two daughters, Janet Rowley and her husband, David, of Houston, Texas, and Brenda K. Reily of Onalaska, Texas; four grandchildren, Brianna and Alexis Reily and Caitlin and Erik Rowley; and several nieces and nephews.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; a son-in-law, Stephen Reily; and a brother, Terrence C. Lane.

Arthur Santana Quintero was born in Mason City. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force and veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He has been living in Des Moines since 1987 and was employed as an accountant at Farmers Commodities Corporation but had retired.

Art enjoyed woodworking and matting and framing pictures. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

BRICELYN, Minn. - Russell M. Sime, 91, of rural Bricelyn, Minn., died Thursday (Nov. 16, 2000) at Lake Mills Care Center.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 10681 500th St., rural Kiester, Minn., with Pastor Dani-Joe Nicker-Griever and Pastor Philip Peters officiating. Interment will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

Russell Myron Sime, son of Adam and Bertha (Undi) Sime, was born July 9, 1909, at Dunseith, N.D. He was baptized at Little Prairie Church at Dunseith. His mother died when he was three and his father died when he was 10. At the age of 12, he went to live with his uncle, Andrew Sime, and his family near Thompson, Iowa. Russell was confirmed in 1923 at Trinity Church. He received his education at country school and attended Thompson High School for two years.

Russell then went to Minneapolis to live with his brother, Ellend, until 1931. He then moved back to Iowa and worked for several farmers, Harold Palmer, O.B. Christenson and Oscar Olson in Eden Township.

On March 21, 1934, Russell was united in marriage to Lucille Sprecher at the Methodist parsonage in Forest City. They lived on a farm in Eden Township for four years, moved to a farm south of Scarville, and then moved back to the farm they purchased east of Rake. They have made the farm home for 58 years.

Russell was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in the church, singing in the choir and a men's quartet. He played on the Eden Township baseball team as the team's pitcher. Russell was also the township clerk for 20 years.

Russell and Lucille celebrated their Golden Anniversary in March of 1984.

He leaves to mourn his wife of 66 years, Lucille; his children, LaVonne Okleasik and her husband, Franklin, of Nome, Alaska, Ronald Sime and his wife, Nancy, of Rake, Lois Forney and her husband, John, of Des Moines, and Joan Winter and her husband, Donald, of Lake Mills; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of friends and relatives.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ellend and Leslie; two sisters, Jeanette Iverson and Emily Higgins; and an infant grandson, Edward William.

His talents of music and sports have been passed on to his children and grandchildren.

Julius was born Feb. 16, 1920, in Grand Island, Neb., the son of Julius Sr. and Mildred (Varney) Bethke.

He was united in marriage to Helen Sievers in August 1941 in Grand Island, Neb. Julius worked at the power plant in Grand Island until 1960. The couple then moved to Manly, where Julius ran a repair shop. They later moved to Blair, Neb., where Julius was a maintenance worker for the state. He retired in the early 1980s and the couple moved to Nora Springs.

Julius' hobbies included working on cars and going for drives in his cars. He enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his family. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly for many years.

Julius is survived by his wife, Helen, of Nora Springs; seven children, Charles Bethke and his wife, Barb, of Dora, Ala., Howard Bethke and his wife, Sharon, of Birmingham, Ala., Don Bethke and his wife, Carolyn, of Lake Mills, Terry Bethke of Nora Springs, Joan Esch and her husband, Greg, of Oklahoma City, Okla., Dorothy Turk and her husband, John, of Mason City, and Judy Marshesault and her husband, Jim, of Prior Lake, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers; one sister; and many nieces and nephews.

Darrold Dewayne Perry, the son of Marshall and Mary (O'Brien) Perry, was born July 14, 1934, at Barnes City. He attended school at Gary, Ind., and served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he returned to Iowa.

On Aug. 13, 1983, he married Janet Weldon at Rockford. They made their home in Forest City, where Darrold worked at Winnebago for 15 years, retiring in April of 2000. He enjoyed his family, grandchildren, fishing and writing poetry.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Perry, of Forest City; four children, Daimon Perry and his wife, Aleen, of Hanlontown, Tearria Perry of Forest City, Kacey Perry of Forest City and Billy Perry of Forest City; two grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Reeder and her husband, Bill, of Newton.

Edna was born Sept. 6, 1909, in North Platte, Neb., the daughter of Albert and Clara (Burandt) Schlientz. She graduated from North Platte High School in 1927.

Edna married Albert L. Herrod June 19, 1929, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, North Platte. They lived in North Platte, where she worked for Sears from 1948-1963. She moved to Littleton, Colo., where she owned and operated the Red Slipper Gift Shop in the Cherry Creek Inn until 1973. She then returned to North Platte to take care of her parents.

In 1994 she moved to Mason City to live with her daughter, Marilyn, and her family and continued to live with them until she entered Heritage Care Center on April 17, 1998.

Edna enjoyed her family, playing bridge and bingo at the care center, and was a Big Red fan and Denver Bronco fan. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, North Platte, the Altar Society and Does Elk Lodge, North Platte.

Edna is survived by seven children, Delores J. Cavey and her husband ,Tom, Denver, Colo., Marilyn A. Shannon and her husband, Jim, Mason City, John A. Herrod and his wife, Dee, Denver, Colo., Albert L. Herrod and his wife, Linda, Littleton, Colo., Gary L. Herrod and his wife, Ann, Jackson, Wyo., Thomas J. Herrod and his wife, Robin, Aurora, Colo., and James M. Herrod and his special friend, Bonnie, Kearney, Neb.; 34 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

OSAGE - Harold William Mullenbach, 80, died Saturday (Nov. 18, 2000) at his home in Osage.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. Philip Recker officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery with military rites conducted by Osage American Legion Post 278 and Osage V.F.W. Post 7920.

Harold was born Feb. 22, 1920, in Loyal, Wis., the son of Fred and Bertha (Huemann) Mullenbach. He enlisted in the U. S. Army and served from 1942 to 1945. He was a truck driver and a machine gun expert and he served in Hawaii, the Philippines, R. Ryukyas and the Eastern Mandates.

He was united in marriage to Mildred Spoden on May 1, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Osage. Harold lived in Osage all of his life.

Harold's work was masonry and plastering until he got his hand injured in a corn picker accident. He then worked for Falk Quarries, then as a custodian at the Mitchell County Courthouse, and later he was employed at Winnebago Industries, where he retired. In the summers after he retired, he worked for the city of Osage.

He was a member of Osage American Legion Post 278 and the Osage V.F.W. Post 7920.

MCINTIRE - Ruth E. Butterfield, 93, died Saturday (Nov. 18, 2000) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center-Hospital in Osage.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the McIntire United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Carey officiating. Burial will be in Wayne Cemetery, rural McIntire.

BONNITA RUPPERT

NORTHWOOD - Bonnita Ruppert, 68, died Saturday (Nov. 18, 2000) in Becker, Minn.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, with Intern Pastor Lynn Parker officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Bonnita Rapp Ruppert was born on Dec. 13, 1931, to John and Karin (Lynd) Rapp, in Hancock County, Iowa. She received her education in Klemme.

Bonnita married Francis Ruppert on Jan. 15, 1949.

She is survived by her husband, Francis, of Northwood; three sons, Merle Ruppert and his wife, Chris, of Northwood, Troy Ruppert and his wife, Candie, of Sommersville, S. C., and Kenneth Ruppert and his wife, Kathy, of Fayetteville, N.C.; four daughters, Pamala Neimeyer of East Helena, Mont., Carolyn Johnson and her husband, Gary, of Kanawha, Connie Pavelka and her husband, Bob, of Britt, and Joan Johnson and her husband, Joe, of Becker, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mildred Hernon and her husband, Jack, of Clear Lake, Alice Rayhons and her husband, Leonard, of Garner, and Shirley Netland of Garner; two brothers, Raymond Rapp and his wife, Dorothy, of Forest City, and Jack Rapp and his wife, Roz, of Caney, Kan.; sisters-in-law, Esther Rapp of Garner, Pauline Rapp of Renwick and Cynthia Rapp of Bronson, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Bonnita was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Harold, Dale, Calvin and Milbern Rapp; and six sisters, Arlis Gilles, Thelma Price, Elvera Welfing, Mavis Hiscocks, Evelyn Hanson and Wanda Rapp.
