CHARLES CITY -Clare W. Goebel, 86, a resident of 307 Hulin St., Charles City, died Friday (March 24, 2000) at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City with the Rev. Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Hampton.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 South Main, Charles City where there will be a 4 p.m. Rosary and a parish vigil scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.

BETTY J. HAWERLANDER

GARNER - Betty J. Hawerlander, 78, of Garner, died Friday (March 24, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Garner with the Rev. Kay Hooper officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services Monday at the church. Her body was cremated. Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jane Hawerlander, the daughter of Frank and Esther (Hobart) Beall, was born Aug. 8, 1921 at Michigan City, Ind. She attended school in Michigan City where she graduated from Isaac C. Elston High School in 1939. She worked for the News Dispatch in Michigan City for several years.

On Nov. 28, 1942 she was married to Theodore Spencer Hawerlander in Michigan City, Ind. They lived in the Chicago, Ill., area for 15 years and then moved to Garner in 1976. After Ted's death in 1981, Betty continued to make her home in Garner. She enjoyed her family, friends, playing bridge and golfing. She attended the United Methodist Church and belonged to several bridge clubs including Bid 'N' Bye, Tuesday Night and Wednesday Day.

She is survived by her four children, Spencer Hawerlander and his wife, Charlotte, and children, Ashley, Matt, Jay, Jamie, Aaron and Christy and two granddaughters, Alexis and Jaydin; Gary Hawerlander of Yankton, S.D. and his children, Greg and Sarah; Natalie Bicknell and her husband, John, of Westminster, Colo., and their two daughters, Jennifer and Erica; and Heidi Schmidt and her husband, Philip, of Rapid City, S.D. and their two sons, Rodney and Ryan; and two sisters, Mary K. Majot of Michigan City, Ind.; and Natalie Foldenauer of Memphis, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted, April 23, 1981 and her parents.

LADONNA M. ECKHARDT

MASON CITY - LaDonna M. Eckhardt, 61, of Mason City, died Friday (March 24, 2000) at her home at 651 Sixth St. S.E.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., Mason City with the Rev. Paul Finger officiating. Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel is in charge of services.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Paul Lutheran Sunday School, 3rd-6th grade or Hospice of North Iowa.

LaDonna was born on May 8, 1938 in Austin, Minn., the daughter of Charles Kirchner and Maude Haag Kirchner Pruisman. She grew up in Manly and graduated from Manly High School in 1956. She attended LaJames Beauty College in Mason City, graduating in 1957. LaDonna worked in the beauty salon at the Americana Nursing Home for three years. She also worked for Amicare for 13 years.

LaDonna was united in marriage to Ron Eckhardt on July 13, 1962, at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school since she was in high school. She also taught confirmation classes, was president of the women's group and the president of the church council. LaDonna was also an active member of the TOPS Club for 32 years.

LaDonna is survived by her husband, Ron Eckhardt of Mason City; her mother, Maude Haag Kirchner Pruisman, of Kanawha; two sons, Marty Eckhardt and his wife, Jodi, of Mason City, and Larry Eckhardt and his wife, Mindy, of Greene; one daughter, Cally Eckhardt, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Debi, David, Jessica, Nathaniel, and Nicholas; one brother, Glen Kirchner and his wife, Dolly, of Decorah; one stepsister, Marlene Walters, of Indiana; one special friend of the family, Mike Gribben, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

LaDonna was preceded in death by her fathers, Charles Kirchner and Klaas Pruisman, two sisters, Rhonda Kirchner and Betty Hacker, one stepbrother, Jerry Pruisman, several aunts and uncles and her grandparents.

CHARLES CITY - Faith Danielle Bucknell, infant daughter of Guy and Noni Bucknell of 401 S. Johnson St., Charles City, died Thursday (March 23, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at Riverside Cemetery, Charles City with the Rev. Doug DeFord of Temple Baptist Church officiating. There will be no visitation. Fullerton Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.

ALICE LOUISE "ARMSTRONG" AWE

MASON CITY - Alice Louise "Armstrong" Awe, 79, of 929 N. Pierce, died Friday (March 24, 2000) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John L. "Jack" Gannett officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Memorials may be given in memory of Alice "Armstrong" Awe.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to service time at the church.

Alice was born Aug. 11, 1920, in Kennedy Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of John N. and Nellie M. (Curtis) Grouette. Alice came to Mason City in 1924. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1939. She moved to Las Vegas, Nev., in 1941. She lived there for two years before returning to Mason City.

In 1943 she married Leslie E. Armstrong. To this union three daughters were born. Following Leslie's passing she married Orville E. Awe in 1972. Alice worked as a cook for 45 years. She owned and operated the State Café for several years. Following her career at the café she worked at several restaurants in Mason City. She also worked at the Heritage Care Center.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and a former member of the Moose Lodge. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, sewing, camping, traveling and working on crafts.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Mary Jones and husband, Don, Mason City, Kathryn VonWald of Texas; three brothers, Gean Grouette, George Grouette and wife, Virginia, and Marvin Grouette and wife, Karen, all of Mason City; one sister, LaVonna Ewing of Mason City; nine grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, daughter, Beverly, and a sister, Margaret Grouette.

MASON CITY - Floyd V. Mix, 88, of Mason City died Friday (March 24, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Ervin Linde officiating. Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd was born March 19, 1912, in Jackson, Minn. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Pope on April 1, 1933, in Mason City. Floyd was a self-employed truck driver and resident of Mason City all his life. In retirement, he took care of his wife and moved to the I.O.O.F. Care Center after her death in 1992. Floyd was a member of the Mason City I.O.O.F. Lodge.

Floyd is survived by his two sons, Mike Mix and his wife, Mary, of St. Louis, Mo., and Tim Mix and his wife, Carole, of Nashville, Tenn; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, seven brothers, one sister and one grandchild.

ROBERT I. MOTT

MASON CITY - Robert I. Mott, 79, of 501 S. Kentucky, formerly of 722 N. Jefferson, died Sunday (March 26, 2000) at the Heritage Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Robert Towner officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Robert I. Mott was born on April 14, 1920, in Mason City, the son of Leta Nickerson Mott and O.J. Mott. He grew up in Mason City, graduated from Mason City High School in 1938 and Mason City Junior College in 1940. During World War II, he served in a medic corps in the Philippines until 1947.

He was then employed at People's Gas and Electric, where he met June Ellen Christians, who was the love of his life. They were married on Sept. 14, 1947. They were lifelong residents of Mason City. Bob was a people person. He enjoyed doing good deeds for his neighbors, shopping with his wife and daughters, and sharing a good story with friends. He was involved throughout his life with civic activities and sponsored many in their recovery.

His business card read, "My interests involve investments, real estate, diamonds, jewelry, pipes, alcoholic evangelism, antiques, silver, travel and lecturing." He played and always believed in Santa Claus.

He is survived by his three daughters, Cherie Casey and husband, Marc, of Dyersville, Cynthia Hansen and husband, Jay, of Mason City, and Roberta Anderson and husband, Howard, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Cori and Kevin Casey, Anne and Wil Hansen and Kathleen Anderson.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, June Ellen, parents and one sister, Helen Buss.

GARETH 'GARY' GENE LAMFERS

BELMOND - Funeral services for Gareth "Gary" Gene Lamfers, 45, of Goodell, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with the Rev. Gary Johnson, Hospice Chaplain, and Pastor Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery in Belmond.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Gareth "Gary" Gene Lamfers, the son of Seabo and Phyllis (Kirkwood) Lamfers, was born Sept. 5, 1954, at Belmond. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1972.

He began working for Hagie Manufacturing from 1972 to 1976 and had been employed by IMT from 1976 until the present.

He was a member of the Goodell Fire Department and Ventura Gun Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was hardworking and always on the go.

He married Christine Greeley on Jan. 18, 2000, and they made their home in Goodell.

Gary had been fighting a battle with cancer and died at his home on Monday (March 27, 2000).

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Christine, of Goodell; daughter, Heather Ann Boyd and her husband, Flint, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, Brook and Brendon Boyd; stepchildren, Richard Bates and Amanda Bates; his mother and stepfather, Phyllis and Harry Wenig, of Belmond; sister, Helen Waters and her husband, David, of Los Angeles, Calif.; brothers, Wayne Lamfers and his wife, Petra, of Belmond, Steve Lamfers and his wife, Pat, of Loveland, Colo., David Lamfers and his wife, Marie, of New Orleans, La., Vern Lamfers and his wife, Connie, of Garner, and James Lamfers, of Rowan; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces.

MARJORIE M. MORGAN

MARSHALLTOWN - Marjorie M. Morgan, 84, of the Iowa Veterans Home, died there on Thursday (March 23, 2000).

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel, with Chaplain Rosemary Vaske of the Iowa Veterans Home officiating. Burial will follow services at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery in Marshalltown.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. today at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel.

A memorial fund has been established in her name.

She was born July 15, 1915, at Waterloo, the daughter of Frederick and Alice (Alsup) Calkins. Early in her childhood, their family moved to the Mason City area where she was raised and educated. She graduated from Mason City High School.

In 1935, she was united in marriage to Robert E. Dunlap Sr. in South Dakota. They made their home in the Mason City and Clear Lake area. She remained there until moving to the Iowa Veterans Home in 1974, where she had been a resident for the past 26 years.

In her time at the Iowa Veterans Home she was very active in choir, dancing and all of the music programs. She was especially proud of her ceramics and crafts, which she had displayed at the Iowa Veterans Home.

She is survived by daughter, Wanell Ness, of Hopkins, Minn.; son, Robert E. (Eva Marie) Dunlap Jr., of Waterloo; son, Sterling F. (Marcelline) Dunlap, of Tulsa, Okla.; daughter, Sally A. Dunlap-Raue, of Cedar Rapids; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert, in 1973; and her sister, Virginia.

HAMPTON - Max W. Sheppard, 73, of Hampton, died Sunday (March 26, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Joe Jones officiating. Burial will be at the Hampton Cemetery.

Max W. Sheppard was born Sept. 23, 1926, in Franklin County, to Charles and Alta (Barclay) Sheppard. He was raised in Hansell and was a graduate of Hansell High School.

He was united in marriage to Beulah Morgan in Hampton on Nov. 18, 1945.

He was united in marriage to Mary Wood on Nov. 24, 1989 in Clear Lake.

He was a farmer and co-owner of the Harbor Inn in Ventura for 30 years.

He was active in farming, enjoyed the family, loved Clear Lake and the Harbor Inn.

He was a member of the First Christian Church.

He is survived by two sons, Todd Sheppard and his wife, Kathy, of Hampton and Lynn Sheppard and his wife, Vicki, of Purcell, Okla.; two daughters, Janet Sass and her husband, Richard, of Hampton and Kathy Sheppard, of Newton; two stepdaughters, Penny Johnson and her husband, Mark, of Greene and Pam Wade and her husband, Ron, of Laramie, Wyo.; one stepson, Larry Wood and his wife, Lisa, of Laramie, Wyo.; one brother, C.J. Sheppard, of Manitoba, Canada; one sister, Dorcas Brown, of Dubuque; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 11 stepgrandchildren.

ALBERT LEA, Minn. - Funeral services for Lois Wolff, 71, of 302 Second Ave. N., Northwood, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Myrtle, Minn., with Pastor Daniel Baker officiating. Burial will be at Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery.

Lois died on Sunday (March 26, 2000) at the Albert Lea Medical Center.

Lois Mae Wolff was born on Aug. 14, 1928, in Albert Lea, the daughter of Herman and Grace (Schoenrock) Heideman. Lois attended rural country school district No. 69 near Conger and district No. 100 near Myrtle. She graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1946.

On Sept. 28, 1949, Lois was united in marriage to Elry Wolff at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. The couple farmed near Gordonsville, Minn., until 1991, when they moved to Albert Lea and recently moved to Northwood.

Lois is a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Ruth Circle.

Survivors include her husband, Elry; daughter, Valerie and husband, Clark Cipra, of Austin, Minn.; grandchildren, Brian Cipra, of St. Paul, Minn. and Suzanne Cipra, of Decorah; sister, Eunice and husband, Clair Anderson, of Albert Lea, Minn.; and brother, Harlan and his wife, Anna Marie Heideman, of Glenville, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Arlene Baumunk, of Chimacum, Wash., Marvelyn and husband, Bill Hoyt, of San Diego, Calif. and Agnes Wolff, of Louisville, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; son, Stuart, in 1974; sister, Helen and husband, Bob Amundson; and her mother and father-in-law, Werner and Renetta Wolff.

ROBERT WILLIAM BOYENGA

HAMPTON - Robert William Boyenga, 80, of Hampton, died Monday (March 27, 2000) at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hampton United Methodist Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Wilbert Trusheim officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with military services provided by the Hampton Memorial Association.

Robert W. Boyenga, son of John and Alberta (Rozevink) Boyenga was born July 3, 1919, at rural Geneva. Here he resided until graduation from Geneva High School in 1937.

He worked as a farm hand for various people before entering the service in 1942. He served in the 89th Infantry Division in World War II from 1942 to 1946. Upon returning from the service, he farmed in Mott Township until retiring and moving to Hampton in 1983.

Bob was a member of the United Methodist Church, serving on the church board and various committees. He was a Farm Bureau member and a 4-H leader.

He was united in marriage to E. Lucille Holm in 1944, and to this union one son was born.

He is survived by his son, Roger and his friend, Maria Sanchez, of Clear Lake; and one grandson, Aaron and his wife, Janell, of Britt; four sisters, Helen Davenport, of Mason City, Evelyn McLaren, of Dysart, Alice Wille and Donna Menning, both of Hampton; many nieces and nephews; and also his special friend, Mildred Price.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lucille; and two brothers, Earl and Howard.

MARCELINE J. CHIZEK

GARNER - Marceline J. Chizek, 73, of Garner, passed away Friday (March 24, 2000) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan, with Father John W. Hemann officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with a combined Rosary Society and Catholic Workman's Lodge rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Marceline Jean Chizek, the daughter of Omar Elmer and Matilda (Matzen) Varvel, was born March 21, 1927, on a farm near Plymouth. She attended school at Mason City, where she graduated from high school in 1944.

On Jan. 25, 1950, she was married to Walter Leonard Chizek at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. They farmed west of Garner until they retired from farming in 1983 and moved into Garner. Marcie also worked at the Longhorn Café in Garner.

She enjoyed her grandchildren and family, cooking, knitting, gardening and quilting for missions, reading, piano and bowling.

She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Rosary Society and Catholic Workman's Lodge.

She is survived by her nine children, David Chizek, of Marshalltown, Diane Fenton and her husband, David, of Belmond, Wanda McLaughlin and her husband, Daniel, of Hanlontown, Roger Chizek, of Garner, Catherine Foley and her husband, Kevin, of Coralville, Ruth Fisher and her husband, Edward, of Havelock, N.C., Joseph Chizek and his wife, Lauri, of Ames, Paul Chizek and his wife, Rebecca, of Clear Lake and Dennis Chizek and his wife, Novella, of Garner; 20 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Lois Caldwell and her husband, Dick, of LaGrange, Ill.; two uncles, Walter Matzen and his wife, Madge, of Blockton, and Alvin Matzen, of Mason City; a brother-in-law, Clarence Chizek and his wife, Irene, of Garner; many nieces and nephews; and good friends, Jo Willemsen and Mary Edwards.

STACYVILLE - Adeline M. Krebsbach, 74, of 407 W. Main, died on Tuesday (March 28, 2000) at her home.

Adeline was born on May 3, 1925, in Stacyville, Iowa, to Roy and Anna (Seibert) Gilles. She attended and graduated from Visitation School in 1943. After high school, she was employed in Osage and Waterloo.

On June 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to Marvin Krebsbach. They made their home on a farm northwest of Stacyville where they resided for 40 years.

Adeline was not only a devoted wife and mother, but a dedicated volunteer to the community, including being a 4-H leader for many years and also to her church.

Her hobbies included gardening, oil painting, bird watching, diet club, ceramics, bowling and being a fair volunteer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Anna; and three brothers, Wilfred, Wilmer and Vernon.

LITTLE CEDAR - Sandra Rae Newton, 49, of rural Little Cedar, died Monday (March 27, 2000) at her home following a lengthy illness.

Sandra was born Oct. 18, 1950, at Osage, the daughter of Rolland "Bub" and Bonnie (Coonradt) Church. She was raised on the family farm east of Osage and graduated from Osage High School in 1969.

Sandra was united in marriage to Allen Duane Newton on July 19, 1969, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage. Sandra and Allen were partners, farming north of Osage near Little Cedar where they raised their two sons.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Bridge Club, Bunco Club and O.W.L.S.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, 819 Main St., Osage, with the Rev. Arthur L. Hill and the Rev. Kevin Fischer officiating. Interment will be in the Little Cedar Cemetery.

ARNOLD STALHEIM

HANLONTOWN - Arnold Stalheim, 81, of Hanlontown passed away Tuesday (March 28, 2000) at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center in Manly.

There will be a private family funeral followed by burial in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Scarville.

Arnold S. Stalheim, son of Ed and Minnie (Olson) Stalheim, was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Worth County, Iowa.

He attended school around Scarville. He did many farm jobs, then went into the Army as a mechanic. After being discharged from the Army he did more farming and also worked at Armour.

On Aug. 7, 1948, he married Virgie Sorrells.

He is survived by Virgie's sons, Walter and his wife, Emma Sorrells, and Mel and his wife, Kumson Sorrells; one brother, Kenneth Stalheim; two sisters, Hazel Peterson and Norma Jorgenson; and many grandchildren; great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virgie, and three sisters, Frances Stalheim, Esther Thorson and Agnes Tollagson.

AL C. HEWITT

DEWEY, Ariz. - Al C. Hewitt, 76, 10821 Singletree Trail, Dewey, Ariz. 86327, died Thursday (March 16, 2000) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa, Ariz., with the Rev. Roger Stressman officiating.

Al was born on Thursday, May 3, 1923, in Otranto Township, Iowa, the son of Charles and Olga (Nelson) Hewitt. He grew up in Iowa, graduated from Mason City High School in 1942, and served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

He married his first wife, Margery Ann Brown, in July 1943. Margery, the mother of his children, died in October 1991. On Feb. 14, 1997, Al married Frances Marguerite Sandlin and they shared three years together.

Al worked for many years as comptroller for Armour in Mason City, Iowa, and other locations. He retired in 1980 and moved to Mesa from St. Cloud, Minn., in 1983 and to Dewey in 1998.

He was a member of Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa and later Prescott United Methodist Church in Prescott. He enjoyed traveling, working with stained glass and singing in the church choir.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite; daughters, JoEllen Hemberger and her husband, Howard, of Round Rock, Texas, and Jan Beery and her husband, Doug, of St. Paul, Minn.; sons, Jerry Hewitt and his wife, Barb, of Riverside, Calif., and Jack Hewitt and his wife, Pam, of Richfield, Wash.; brothers, Ray Hewitt and his wife, Amy, of Clear Lake, Iowa, Don Hewitt and his wife Pat, of Waterford, Wis., and Bob Hewitt and his wife, Bonnie, of New Hope, Minn.; grandchildren Wade and Heather Hewitt, Stephanie, Christian, Charles "Charlie", Marni, Benjamin and Jacob.

LEONARD 'T BONE' LENZE

MASON CITY - Leonard "T Bone" Lenze, 83, of 4 Third St. N.W. #39, died Tuesday (March 28, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating. Interment will be in OakHill Cemetery in Belle Plaine, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with an Alchor Shrine and Masonic services conducted at 7 p.m.

Leonard "T Bone" Lenze was born Aug. 22, 1916, at Belle Plaine, Iowa, the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Henry) Lenze. The family moved to Mason City in 1926. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1935.

He enlisted in the United States Army in December 1941 and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was discharged on Dec. 31, 1945, and returned to Mason City. Upon his return he was married to Alice Tallman on Jan. 21, 1946. They married in her parents' home in Clarion.

Leonard attended Mason City Junior College and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1950. Upon graduation he returned to Mason City and worked at Lehigh Portland Cement Company. He retired in June of 1980 to an active life.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Harding Masonic Lodge #649 A.F. & A.M., York Rite Benevolence Chapter #46, Antioch Commandery #43 K.T., Cedar Rapids Consistory and El Kahir Shrine Temple. He also served a long tenure as a board member for the Lehigh Employees Credit Union.

He took up bicycle riding in 1975 and embarked on a 22-year career of riding RAGBRAI with his two sons at his side and Alice driving the support vehicle. He also enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, hunting, traveling, dabbling in the stock market and observing nature.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Alice Lenze of Mason City; sons, Chuck Lenze and his wife, Elaine, of Norwalk, Iowa and Tom Lenze and his wife, Kyla, of Prole, Iowa; grandchildren, Troy, Eric, Sara and Adam Lenze; a sister, Gladys Lenze of Mason City and nephews, Carl Sand, of Fox Lake, Ill. and Richard Sand, of Chicago, Ill.

Harlan W. Girton was born Aug. 6, 1905, at West Bend, Iowa, the son of Robert B. and Jennie (Matthews) Girton. The family moved to Whittemore in 1912 and then came to Mason City in 1919. Harlan graduated from Mason City High School in 1923 and Iowa State University in 1927.

He married Gretchen Carlson on Oct. 29, 1935. She died June 7, 1950. Harlan then married Katherine S. Sheffler on Aug. 6, 1952, in Mason City. She died Jan. 25, 1998.

Harlan was president and general manager of Northwestern Distributing Co. for 39 years, retiring in 1966.

They spent many winters in Arizona. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, an elder in the church; a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the Benevolence Lodge #145 A.F. & A.M. Scottish Rite Bodies, El Kahir Shrine Temple, High Twelve; past president of the Mason City Kiwanis Club; former board member of the First National Bank from 1942 to 1978; former board member of the YMCA and the North Iowa Fair Board; director of the Iowa Grain and Feed Association.

Harlan enjoyed doing needle point and was a loving and caring gentleman, who enjoyed spending time with his family, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

RICHARD 'DICK' MARSHALL

REDDING, Calif. - Richard "Dick" Marshall, 59, of Redding, Calif., passed away Thursday (March 23, 2000) at Redding Medical Center following a short illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at the Allen & Dahl Funeral Home in Anderson, Calif. His body was cremated and buried next to his wife, Shirley, at Whiskeytown Cemetery.

Dick was born July 10, 1940, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, to Al "Shorty" and Charlotte (Smith) Marshall, of Dougherty, Iowa. He attended Marble Rock Schools, graduating in 1958.

He will be dearly missed by his three children, two daughters, Tammy Smallhouse and her husband, Mark, and Tracy Parent and her husband, Lamar; his son, Tony Marshall; one grandson, Nathan Postman; a sister, Rose Marie Hart of Mason City; a brother, Robert Marshall and his wife, Grace, of North Carolina; sister-in-law, Roma Marshall of Greene, Iowa; brother-in-law, Dean Hartwigsen of Reno, Nev.; mother-in-law, Eunice Hartwigsen of Chico, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley (Hartwigsen) ; and his brother, Jim Marshall.

HANLONTOWN - Arnold Stalheim, 81, of Hanlontown, passed away Tuesday (March 28, 2000) at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Manly.

Visitation was held on Thursday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills.

Private family funeral services will be followed by burial at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Scarville.

Arnold S. Stalheim, son of Ed and Minnie (Olson) Stalheim, was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Worth County, Iowa.

He attended school around Scarville. He did many farm jobs, then went into the U.S. Army as a mechanic. After being discharged from the army, he did more farming and also worked at Armour.

On Aug. 7, 1948, he married Virgie Sorrells.

He is survived by Virgie's sons, Walter and his wife, Wilma Sorrells, and Mel and his wife, Kumson Sorrells; one brother, Kenneth Stalheim; two sisters, Hazel Peterson and Norma Jorgenson; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virgie; and three sisters, Frances Stalheim, Esther Thorson and Agnes Tollagson.

BELMOND - Arthur M. Finn, 86, of Belmond, died Tuesday (March 28, 2000) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Arthur, the son of Thomas and Rosella Brown Finn, was born on July 18, 1913, on the family farm near Belmond. Growing up in the Belmond area, he attended country school in Pleasant Township District No. 5.

Arthur lived on the family farm his entire working life, where he was a dairy and grain farmer. He later lived in the Belmond Apartments for a time, and then moved to the Belmond Health Care Center in 1992.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. He was a spiritual person and devoted to his faith.

Arthur enjoyed watching television and sports. He also enjoyed pool and going for rides in the country.

Arthur is survived by one sister, Pearl Harmon, of Rockwell City, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Gladys and Cecelia; and nine brothers, Earl, Frank, Fred, John, Lloyd, Leroy, Cecil, Robert and Gerald.
