CHARLES CITY - Stanley D. Perry, 88, of 705 Freeman St., died Sunday (March 19, 2000) at the 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. Diane Mitchell, associate pastor of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Thursday.

JOYCE L. JOHNSON

ATLANTIC - Joyce LaVonne Johnson, 72, of Atlantic, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (March 18, 2000) at the home of a friend.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic, with the Rev. Ron Barnett officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

THOMAS WAYNE MARTIN

MASON CITY - Thomas Wayne Martin, 85, of rural Mason City, died Sunday (March 19, 2000) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kathy Graves, chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

THOMAS G. DONOVAN

CHARLES CITY - Thomas G. Donovan, 78, of California City, Calif., died Tuesday (March 14, 2000) at Lancaster, Calif.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville, in rural Marble Rock, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Roseville.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

BARBARA J. TOMPKINS

GARNER - Barbara J. Tompkins, 42, of Garner, passed away Sunday (March 19, 2000) at the Concord Care Center.

Private family services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Kay Hooper of the United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St. in Garner.

Barbara Jane Tompkins, the daughter of Dean and Betty (Johnson) Tompkins, was born Oct. 3, 1957, at Britt. Barb was one of the unfortunate who developed a brain tumor at the age of nine months. Her life had been a battle with the effects of it ever since. For many years, our hearts have ached for a better life for her. She is now in that better place. No more pain or suffering. We loved Barb dearly and she will be greatly missed by all of us.

She is survived by her parents, Dean and Betty Tompkins, of Garner; two brothers, Allen Tompkins and his wife, Marian and their children, Sarah and Zachary, of Clear Lake and Larry Tompkins and his wife, Sandi, of Urbandale; and her sister, Beth Stearns and her son, Gabriel, of Garner. Rest in peace, Barbie!

SHIRLEY D. RYNER

NORA SPRINGS - Shirley D. Ryner, 79, of Nora Springs, died Sunday (March 19, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Nora Springs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sunnyside Memorial Gardens in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs.

Memorials may be directed to the Nora Springs United Methodist Church.

Shirley was born on June 8, 1920, in rural Rudd, the daughter of Frank and Lula (Wagner) Chesnut. She graduated from Floyd High School and attended beauty school in Waterloo.

Shirley was united in marriage to Willard J. Ryner on Oct. 11, 1941, in her mother's flower garden north of Rudd. She owned and operated her own beauty shop in Rudd for a few years and also worked at the Knitting Mill in Osage, but Shirley was primarily a homemaker.

She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, cooking, gardening, fishing and bowling 2-3 times a week. She also loved to play cards and was a member of two bridge clubs in Nora Springs.

Shirley was also a member of the Nora Springs American Legion Auxiliary.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Willard Ryner, of Nora Springs; three sons, Dennis Ryner and his wife, Connie, of Geneseo, Ill., and Joel and Gene Ryner, both of Nora Springs; one daughter, Charlene Brayden and her husband, Duncan, of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Diane Hale and her husband, Vernon, Denise Goodrich and her husband, Jim, Gregory Ryner, Joseph Brayden and Cynthia Vivone and her husband, Mario; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Marlus Hodina and her husband, Stanley, of Floyd; and two brothers, Roger Chesnut and his wife, Arlene, of Charles City and Donald Chesnut and his wife, Zona, of Horatio, Ark.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Lucille Teeple.

BERNICE MARY WONSMOS

MASON CITY - Bernice Mary Wonsmos, 91, of 330 21st St. S.E., died Monday (March 20, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. Robert Hetrick of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Thornton officiating. Interment will follow in Richland Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home and visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the Bernice Wonsmos Memorial Fund.

Bernice was born Feb. 20, 1909, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Engle) Polsdofer in Swaledale. While in school Bernice entered into the state spelling bee, making it all the way to the final round.

Bernice was employed at the Clear Lake Bakery until her retirement in 1974. After a day's work, Bernice enjoyed coming home and working in her garden and doing some crocheting. She also cleaned houses and wall papered many walls over the years.

Bernice could be found playing bingo, cards or watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bernice loved to cook and bake, especially angel food cakes and a variety of pies. Over the last few years, Bernice had become the neighborhood watch, keeping her eye on everyone who went down the street.

Those thankful for having shared in Bernice's life include her daughter, Lois Nielsen and her husband, Dale, of Forest City; son, Richard Wonsmos and his wife, Darlene, of Thornton; and a daughter-in-law, Dorothy J. Wonsmos, of Clear Lake; one sister-in-law, Hazel Wonsmos, of Thornton; nine grandchildren, Greg Wonsmos, Julie Meath, Bruce Wonsmos, Cathy Isebrand, Steven Nielsen, Beth Moon, Gerald Nielsen, Debra Friest and Valarie Williamson; 18 great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Marie Shima.

Mrs. Wonsmos was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert, in 1958; one son, Wayne; two sisters, Lottie and Lucille; and four brothers, Will, Art, Clarence and Harvey.

GERTRUDE M. DUGAN

CHARLES CITY - Gertrude M. Dugan, 92, of Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home and formerly of 1001 Freeman St. in Charles City, died Sunday (March 19, 2000) at the nursing home.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Highway 18 and Clark Streets, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, with a rosary recited by St. Jude's Circle at 4 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

LEONA M. BLAU

BELMOND - Funeral services will be held for Leona Mattie Blau, 89, of Belmond, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Reformed Church in Alexander, with the Rev. Robert Ford officiating. Interment will be held in Alexander Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Leona Mattie (Foss) Blau, the daughter of Henry and Bessie (Schmidt) Foss, was born April 21, 1910, at Goodell. She attended country school in rural Goodell and was united in marriage to Dick Blau on Sept. 19, 1929, at Hampton. They began farming together on a farm where they resided all of their married life.

Leona was a typical farmer's wife, sharing in all the chores, mother to seven children. She kept her home immaculately clean, was a very good cook and loved to crochet and quilt. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very important to her and she enjoyed spending time with them.

She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Alexander, the RCW and was a member of the Cemetery Society.

Leona died on Monday (March 20, 2000) at her farm home in rural Alexander.

She leaves to cherish her memory, sons, Gene Blau, of Mason City, Duane Blau and his wife, Nancy, of South Bend, Ind., Marlin Blau and his wife, Linda, of Alexander, Gary Blau, of Alexander, and Richard Blau and his wife, Susan, of Alexander; daughters, Madonna Brcka, of Palm Desert, Calif. and Sandra Dorenkamp and her husband, Kenneth, of Alexander; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lavonne Hain and her husband, Claude, of Ventura.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dick; two brothers; and one sister.

JOHN F. TIERNEY

MASON CITY - John F. Tierney, 55, of Mason City and Lino Lakes, Minn., died on Saturday (March 18, 2000) at his Lino Lakes Home after a short battle with cancer. His family was close by.

John was a senior processing engineer who retired from Fleetguard Inc. in Lake Mills.

John is survived by his wife, JoAnne; son, John P., of Rochester, Minn. and future daughter-in-law, Chena Nigon; son, Jeff and daughter-in-law, Jessica; and grandsons, Zander and Drew, of Rockwell; sister, Elizabeth Andrews, of Superior, Wis.; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Tim Titus, of Omaha, Neb.; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank and mother, Virginia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 117 Elm Street in Lino Lakes, Minn. Visitation will be one hour prior to Mass on Wednesday.

A pending burial service will take place in Mason City.

LYDIA I. E. STRATMANN

LATIMER - Lydia Stratmann, 87, of Latimer, died Saturday (March 18, 2000) at the Extended Care Nursing Facility, Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Latimer, with the Rev. Randall Bell officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Latimer.

Visitation with the family present will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home in Latimer, with a 6 p.m. prayer service.

Lydia Ida Emma Varrelmann was born on Jan. 24, 1913, in Marion Township, Franklin County, the daughter of Wilhelm and Alvina (Dohrmann) Varrelmann. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth.

On July 7, 1938, Lydia was united in marriage with Wallace R. Stratmann at the Marion Center Parsonage in Latimer. She was a lifelong resident of Franklin County , where she and her husband farmed for many years.

Lydia was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, including Women's Fellowship. She was also an active community member, with such organizations as Latimer Cemetery Society and Latimer Senior Citizens. In Lydia's spare time, she enjoyed gardening, sewing, working crosswords and playing cards.

Lydia is survived by a sister-in-law, Gladys Varrelmann, of Hampton; six nieces and nephews; and 12 great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wallace; two brothers, Herbert and Elmer; and one sister, Hilda Schmalbeck.

MARGARET BERGMAN STODDART

MASON CITY - Mrs. John (Margaret) Stoddart, a former area resident, died on Sunday (March 19, 2000) at her home, 8201 Ninth Ave., East Tacoma, Wash. It was her wish to be cremated and there will be no services.

Margaret Velva Bergman was born in rural Rockwell on July 9, 1913, the daughter of Henry J. and Mary (Hinrichs) Bergman. She graduated from Rockwell High School in 1930, after which she attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon.

She taught in a Cerro Gordo County Rural School, Bath Township No. 9. She later was an elementary teacher in the Rockwell and Ringsted schools.

She married John A. Stoddart in 1942, and the couple lived in Mason City, Phoenix, Minneapolis, and Tacoma, Wash. They were the parents of John Michael and Jill Michelle Stoddart.

She is survived by a daughter, Jill Fredrickson; grandson, John Michael Mills; and great-grandson, Cody Mills, all of Tacoma, Wash. Local survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Sawyer, of Rockwell and Lucille Eikenbary, of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Margaret Bergman, of Humboldt; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John A. Stoddart; a son, John M. Stoddart; two sons-in-law, Dean Mills and Howard Fredrickson; and a brother, Henry J. Bergman Jr.

Memorials may be given in her name to the First Baptist Church of Rockwell or Hospice of North Iowa.

HANNA ANNA ELIZABETH WAGGONER

MASON CITY - Hanna Anna Elizabeth Waggoner, 88, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Saturday (March 18, 2000) at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., Mason City, with the Rev. Paul Finger officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m., one hour prior to the services today at the church. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Hanna Waggoner Memorial Fund.

Hanna Anna Elizabeth (Reich) Waggoner was born Sept. 29, 1911, in Ramona, Kan., the daughter of John Henry and Anna Elizabeth (Borger) Reich. She was baptized Oct. 15, 1911, at Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ramona. In 1916 her family moved to Iowa and she attended Mason City schools.

On Dec. 6, 1930, Hanna was united in marriage with Edgar Russell Waggoner at First Presbyterian Church Parsonage in Mason City. They farmed in the Clear Lake and Fertile area until 1942, when they moved to a farm near Carpenter. They farmed there until retiring in 1962.

While there she was a member of Deer Creek Lutheran Church near Carpenter, the P.T.A., Music Mothers and Card Club.

After retiring they moved to Bolivar, Mo. After Edgar's death in 1978, Hanna returned to Mason City, where she became an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Church Circle.

Hanna enjoyed spending time with her family and was known to be a very good cook and baker. She liked to sew and visit with her friends and relatives.

She is survived by her two sons, Leroy Waggoner, Mason City, and Larry Waggoner, Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Coleen Trettin and her husband, Dale, Grafton, and Kathy Moore and her husband, Larry, Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren, Lori Mulch and her special friend, Kelly Hart, Hutchinson, Kan., Lisa Waggoner, Cedar Rapids, Lynne Patton and her husband, Jack, Thornton, Colo., Dawn Schutter and her husband, Dwane, Titonka, Todd Trettin and his wife, Jennifer, Carpenter, Julie Moore, Staten Island, N. Y., and Kellie More, Omaha, Neb.; two great-grandchildren, Kristen Schutter and Kayleigh Trettin; 3 step-great-granchildren, Kenny, Kyle and Kaleb; one sister, Alvina Fisher, Lake Park; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, John Henry Waggoner in infancy; a sister, Marie Beisel; sister-in-law, Viola Abrams; and brother-in-law, Gerald Fisher.

T. Wayne Martin

MASON CITY - T. Wayne Martin, 85, of rural Mason City, died Sunday (March 19, 2000) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kathy Graves, chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home and until time of services on Thursday.

Memorials may be given to the T. Wayne Martin Memorial Fund.

T. Wayne Martin was born March 7, 1915, in Revere, Mo., the son of Adam J. and Cynthia (Wallace) Martin. He attended school in Revere where he played basketball and tennis. He graduated in 1933.

After high school, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps building parks in Arkansas. In 1935, he hopped a freight train to Cerro Gordo County where he helped an uncle harvest crops. He remained in the area, working for several farmers.

On Nov. 21, 1936, he married Eva Lou Wharam in Iowa Falls in the home of the Rev. George A. Wolf. He farmed with his father-in-law, Owen Wharam in Lincoln Township. He farmed on his own after Owen retired in 1941.

Wayne was a member of the Lincoln Township School Board. He served on the Farmers Co-op Gas and Oil Board and drove a fuel truck.

He was a hunter and fisherman well into his 70s. He especially enjoyed the 4th of July celebrations on the farm including family, friends and neighbors. In later years, he and his wife delivered motor homes for Winnebago Industries. They enjoyed the opportunity to travel. Wayne loved spending quality time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons, A. Jay and his wife, Sharon, of Mason City and Perry and his wife, Kim, of Hiawatha, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, Penny Ryan, of Santa Fe, N.M., Lisa Effertz and her husband, Ken, of Glendale, Ariz., Tracy Kelly and her husband, Steve, of Mason City, Kelly Menting, of Mason City, Kim Doerr and her husband, Darin, of Nampa, Idaho, Corey J. Martin and his wife, Jennifer, of Mason City, Jason B. Martin, of Mason City, Brandon A. Martin, of Kerhonkson, N.Y., Anthony J. Martin, of Kerhonkson, N.Y., and Karen Martin, of Hiawatha, Iowa; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Wynona Dorsey and her husband, Gerald, of Bowling Green, Mo.; sister-in-law, Margaretta Baago, of Clear Lake; and brother-in-law, Jack Wharam and his wife, Roberta, of Indianapolis, Ind.; sister-in-law, Ellen Nelson and her husband, Bert, of Clear Lake; sister-in-law, Anne Martin, of Missouri; sister-in-law, Helen Martin, of Missouri; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva; a son, Gary; a daughter, Gay Eckhardt; one sister, Wilma Hanks; and three brothers, Wallace, Wendel and Leo.

Alice N. Ward

WATERLOO - Alice N. Ward, 88, of 1420 Byron Ave., Waterloo, formerly of Lake Mills, died Monday (March 20, 2000) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waterloo, with the Rev. Thomas Isaacson officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Locke Funeral Home, 1519 W. Fourth St. in Waterloo.

Memorials may be given to the Zion Lutheran Church in Waterloo.

Alice N. Ward was born July 7, 1911, in Rochester, Minn., a daughter of Peter and O'Tilda (Grangaard) Gullickson. She graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1928, then taught country school for several years near Lake Mills. She worked at Kingsley and Lowell Schools in Waterloo and as a foster parent for Lutheran Social Services for 15 years.

Alice was united in marriage to Robert J. Ward on Jan. 21, 1935, in Lake Mills.

She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Ward of Waterloo; one son, James K. Ward of Geneseo, Ill.; one daughter, Jane P. Ward of Cloquet, Minn.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Betty Gullickson Watschke of Charles City; and sister-in-law, Irene Wildebor of Phoenix, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Tilford in infancy and Arnold; and two sisters, Thelma Heimstra and Ethel Doepping.

Leona M. Blau

ALEXANDER - Funeral services for Leona Mattie Blau, 89, of Alexander, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the First Reformed Church in Alexander, with the Rev. Robert Ford officiating. Interment will be held in Alexander Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond, and will be held one hour prior to services today at the church.

Alice Hildur Valentin

CLEAR LAKE - Alice Hildur Valentin, 92, of Clear Lake, died Monday (March 13, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services were held in Lamberton, Minn. Burial was on Friday March 17, 2000, at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Walnut Grove, Minn.

Gilma Lenora Hendrickson

NORTHWOOD - Gilma Lenora Hendrickson, 95, of Northwood, died on Sunday (March 19, 2000) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter, with the Rev. Kathy Larson officiating. Burial will be in the London-Deer Creek Cemetery in rural Northwood.

Gilma was born Feb. 6, 1905, in Deer Creek Township, Worth County, Iowa, to Lena and Hans Hanson. She attended rural school and graduated from Northwood High School in 1923. She taught school in Barton and Deer Creek Townships.

She married Irving Hendrickson in 1926. They farmed in Deer Creek Township for many years until his death in 1954. She remained on the farm with her son who had taken over the farming.

She moved to Northwood in 1971 and lived there until June 1997, when she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Gilma is survived by one son, Horace Hendrickson and his wife, Ann, of Northwood; two daughters, Ivadene Dale, of San Jose, Calif. and Marcella Olson and her husband, Ronald, of Apple Valley, Minn.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Roy Hanson, of St. Ansgar.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband and two brothers.

DAYTON, Texas - Dorothy Quiggle, 82, of Dayton, Texas, formerly of Riceville, died Sunday (March 5, 2000) at Golden Charm Nursing Center in Liberty after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at the Sterling Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton. Burial was held at Palms Memorial Park Cemetery in Dayton. Services and arrangements were under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

She was a native of Meyer, Iowa, and had lived in California and moved to Dayton from Mena, Ark. She had lived in Dayton, Texas, for the last 23 years. She only retired 12 years ago and had owned a grocery store, gas station and was a seamstress and last owned and operated a dry cleaners store in Downey, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a grandson, Donnie Rowson; a brother, Harold Dishinger; and sister, Gladys Petty.

She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Loterbauer, of Manly, Iowa and Dei Dei Parks and her husband, Jack Parks, of Dayton, Texas; six grandchildren, Barry Naber and his wife, Dolly, of Chicago, Ill., Ron Morrison and his wife, Lisa, of Kenefick, Brian Loterbauer and his wife, Michelle, of Mason City, Iowa, Rodger Morrison and his wife, Stacey, of Sand Springs, Okla., Joelle Losier and her husband, Yank, of Baytown, Texas and Julie Berry and her husband, W.H., of Dayton, Texas. There are 11 great-grandchildren, Tiffani, Jodee, Kiki, Tyl L., Cassie, Ty M., Josh, Dustin, Brittney, Megan and Jakob. She has a sister, Delores Brockney, of Riceville, Iowa; two brothers, Ronnie Dishinger, of Riceville, and Dean Dishinger, of Osage.

John F. Tierney

MASON CITY - John F. Tierney, 55, of Mason City and Lino Lakes, Minn., died on Saturday (March 18, 2000) at his Lino Lakes home after a short battle with cancer. His family was close by.

John was a senior processing engineer who retired from Fleetguard Inc. in Lake Mills.

John is survived by his wife, JoAnne; son, John P., of Rochester, Minn. and future daughter-in-law, Chena Nigon; son, Jeff, and daughter-in-law, Jessica; and grandsons, Xander and Drew, of Rockwell; sister, Elizabeth Andrews, of Superior, Wis.; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Tim Titus, of Omaha, Neb.; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank, and mother, Virginia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 117 Elm Street in Lino Lakes, Minn. Visitation will be one hour prior to Mass today.

RAKE - Eva Faber, 94, of Rake, died Tuesday (March 21, 2000) at St. Luke's Retirement Home in Blue Earth, Minn.

Eva Rebecca Faber was born Oct. 5, 1905,to Cornelius and Effie (Burma) Dirksen in rural Latimer, Iowa. She was baptized in the Reformed Church near Latimer. At the age of 3 years, the family moved to a farm south of Buffalo Center, where she was confirmed. She received her education at Buffalo Center Community School.

She was united in marriage to Fred Faber on Dec. 20, 1922. They moved to the Faber farm south of Rake. After a few years, they joined the Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake where she was a member of the choir and Ladies Aide.

During the last several years, she was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Rake. She enjoyed going to Ladies Aide and Circle. Eva also enjoyed quilting.

On Nov. 7, 1995, she moved to Nicollet Place in Blue Earth, Minn. On Dec. 29, 1998, Eva became a resident of St. Luke's Lutheran Home in Blue Earth. She died there on March 21, 2000, at the age of 94.

She is survived by a daughter, Harriet and her husband, Ralph Brones; one daughter-in-law, Mardelle Faber, all of Rake; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Eva was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred, in 1985; two sons, George and Richard; three grandchildren, Gregory Faber, Dean and Craig Brones; a brother, John Dirksen and by other step brothers and step sisters.

SHEFFIELD - Funeral services for Leroy Dean Vanston, 80, of Sheffield, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf -Grarup Funeral Home in Sheffield, with the Rev. Leroy Dean Vanston was born on May 2, 1919, at Sheffield, Iowa to Chester and Mary Van Avery Vanston. Leroy was schooled in Sheffield schools, then worked as a farm hand until entering the U.S. Army. He served from 1942-1944 in the First Special Service Force. The Force was in Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He was injured and received the Purple Heart. Following his discharge, Leroy worked as a carpenter for area contractors until ill health forced his retirement. He then repaired small motors.

Leroy was united in marriage to Arlene Terrill Taylor on June 27, 1967, in Vermillion, S.D.

In his younger years, Leroy enjoyed coaching and playing softball. He enjoyed watching birds and gardening.

Leroy died on Thursday morning (March 23, 2000) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home in Rockwell at the age of 80.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene, of Sheffield; stepchildren, Gilberta Schwebke and her husband, Dean, of Deer River, Minn., Lester Taylor and his wife, Leona, of Clear Lake, and Sandra Sue Gallo and her husband, Sal, of Holstein; six stepgrandchildren; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Lepper, of Oregon; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Leland "Mike" Vanston.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Daren Lee Taylor, 33, 7423 Mallard Court N.E, died Wednesday evening (March 22, 2000) at St. Lukes Hospital following a sudden illness.

Daren was born Dec. 29, 1966, in Hampton, the son of Darwin and Sallie Taylor. He grew up in Dumont and graduated from Dumont High School in 1985. He received his associate of arts degree from Iowa Central Community College in 1987.

He married Rita Bushbaum on June 8, 1991, in Dumont. He was employed by McLeod USA. He previously was in radio broadcasting for 12 years, working for KHAK and KDAT.

He was a member of the Lovely Lane United Methodist Church, where he was active with both softball and basketball. Daren was an avid Hawkeye fan.

Daren loved his life to the fullest and enjoyed every minute, especially his time with his family, Rita and Quintin. A memorial fund has been established for his son, Quintin.

Daren is survived by his wife, Rita and his son, Quintin, both of Cedar Rapids; his parents, Darwin and Sallie Taylor, of Cedar Rapids; his brother, Thad Taylor, of Iowa City; his maternal grandmother, Shirley Hawver, of Hampton; paternal grandmother, Betty Taylor, of Dumont; and paternal grandfather, Pete Taylor, of Ackley; a nephew, Landon Taylor, of Sioux City; and a niece, Jaicee Lyons, of Cedar Rapids; his mother and father-in-law, John and Maxine Bushbaum, of Dumont.

Magna was born Nov. 14, 1908, in Jyland, Denmark, the daughter of Rasmus A. and Frederikke (Thillemann) Rasmussen. Magna lived in Denmark until age 14, when her family moved to Coulter. She attended school in Alexander.

Magna married Walter Anderson and moved to rural Klemme, where they farmed for many years. Magna lived in Grafton for eight years, then moved to Mason City, where she had lived since. She was a housekeeper in the area for many years.

Magna was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, church circle, Queen Rebekah Lodge, Danish Sisterhood and volunteered at several care centers including Americana, Good Shepherd and I.O.O.F. Home. She loved her flowers and crocheting.

Magna is survived by her four children, Dagny Schmidt, of Klemme, Calvin Anderson and his wife, Beverly, of rural Ventura, Einer Anderson, of Clarion and Melvin Anderson and his wife, Nancy, of Burchinal; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Magna was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands, Walter Anderson, Axel Jensen and Vern Bowen; two brothers; two sisters; two grandchildren; and one son-in-law.

FLORENCE CHARLOTTE FRYE

DOWS - Florence Charlotte Frye was born on April 12, 1903, the daughter of Emile George and Ida Mary (Otto) Frye, the last of five girls and the seventh of 10 children. She was a lifelong resident of Wright County. She was born on her family farm belonging to her maternal grandparents and they then moved to the Frye farm near Wall Lake and then to Dows.

Throughout her life, she was noted for her devotion to numerous community causes, both private and public. In her youth and later, she was called to tend to the sick in their homes. She was self sacrificial by nature.

Florence remained unmarried throughout her 96 years of life, but to many who loved her, it was apparent that above all, she valued connection.

The town of Dows was of primary importance to her most all her life. She promoted the Dows Welcome Center. She was a longtime member of the Dows Historical Society and an honored member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She gave generously to support Dows. Among her contributions were numerous scholarships to high school students, given in memory of her brother, Emile. She shared a business partnership with Emile in an electric business in Dows, and she recently gave the building to the city of Dows to be used as a museum. She was a member of the Dows Methodist Church.

Florence passed away at 6:50 a.m. on Wednesday (March 22, 2000) at the Clarion Care Center, where she had been since suffering a fall at her home in Dows.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Grace, Ella, Byrd, Nelle, Harry, Ray, Emile and an infant, and also five nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her brother, Fred G. Frye, of University Park; 12 nieces and nephews; and 53 great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Dows Methodist Church in Dows, with the Rev. James Turner officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

MINA JOHNSON

MONA - Evelyn "Mina" Johnson, 82, of Mona, died Wednesday (March 22, 2000) at her home. She was born March 4, 1918, in Petersburg, Jackson County, Minn., to Alfred and Bessie (Peterson) Eggestein. Mina attended schools in southern Minnesota.

She married LeRoy Johnson on March 7, 1934, in Albert Lea, Minn. They lived in Austin and Rose Creek before moving to a farm near Mona, where they have lived since June of 1946.

Mina was a member of the Mona Lutheran Church, where she was active in WELCA, quilting and many other church activities. She was a Bible study leader at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar. She was active in the Flying Fingers Craft Club.

Her interests were quilting and gardening. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, LeRoy; seven daughters, Lillian (Almo) Jahr and Marlys (Joe) Follmuth, both of St. Ansgar, Darlene Maine, of Fresno, Calif., Grace (Herman) Peterson, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Linda Garvey, of Bolan, Rebecca (Gary) Fredrickson, of Byron, Minn., and Monica (Myron) Hemann, of McIntire; four sons, Robert and his wife, Patty, of Winona, Wayne and his wife, Neilene, of St. Ansgar, Lynn and his wife, Teri, of Hibbing, Minn., and David, of Byron, Minn.; 46 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a very large extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, two brothers, one daughter, two daughters-in-law, one grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mona Lutheran Church, Mona, with the Rev. Lydia Mittag officiating. Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mona.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 27, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with Rev. Gary Johnson, Chaplain at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of Mason City, officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel and after 9 a.m. until time of services on Monday.

Family suggests memorials be given to the William Thomas Sparks Memorial Fund.

Butch was born on Sept. 14, 1949, at the Boone County Hospital in Boone, the son of William and Betty (Brown) Sparks. He grew up in Ogden, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1968. While growing up he enjoyed playing football, hunting, fishing, and working on cars. During the summers of high school he began working at Northern Natural Gas in Ogden, where after graduating he worked full-time. Through the years, his leisure time included gardening, fishing, being a collector of many things, taking trips to Las Vegas, his continued love of cars, and reading Stephen King books; but his greatest pleasure came from being with friends and his family at their home.

On Dec. 27, 1969 he and Marilyn Loudon were married in Ogden, Iowa. Butch continued working for Northern Natural Gas in Ogden until September of 1970 when he, Marilyn, and infant son Todd moved to Clear Lake and he began work at Northern's Ventura Plant. This move was the beginning of 29 years employed at the Ventura Plant, making Clear Lake his family's home and where his sons Todd and Cory grew up, and the place where many close friendships were made.

Butch will be missed forever and never forgotten in the hearts of his wife Marilyn Sparks, Clear Lake; two sons, Todd Sparks and his wife, Stacy, of Hopkins, Minn. and Cory Sparks, of Clear Lake; his grandson Noah; three sisters, Sue Olson and her husband, David and family, of Danbury, Wis., Kathy Jackson and her husband, Paul and family, of Boone and Karen Foster and her husband Terry and family, of Lucas, Iowa; his father-in-law, Wally Loudon and his wife, Jackie, of Boone.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, mother-in-law, Gladys Loudon and maternal and paternal grandparents.
