BARBARA JEAN WALES

MASON CITY - Barbara Jean Platts Wales, 41, of 1417 N. Virginia Ave., died
Friday (March 10, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Fullerton Funeral
Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth, of First
United Methodist Church, officiating.

Visitation will be after 9:30 am Monday at the funeral chapel, using the East
doors. Cremation will be at Cremation Services of North Iowa.

KURTUS RYAN MILLER

KANAWHA - Kurtus Ryan Miller, 20, went home to be with his Savior and Lord Jesus
Christ Monday (March 6, 2000).

Funeral services for Kurtus will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the West Hancock
High School in Britt, with the Rev. David Wiersbe and the Rev. Doug Anderson
officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in
Britt and one hour prior to services at the school.

Kurtus was born the first of four children to Matthew and Carol (Stillwell)
Miller in Davenport on June 25, 1979.

Kurtus lived nine years in Davenport before moving to Wyoming, Iowa, for four
years, then to Kanawha where he lived five years, graduating from West Hancock
High School in Britt in May of 1997. Kurtus was a member of the 1996 State
Championship football team. He then attended North Iowa Area Community College
in Mason City for two years.

At the beginning of their senior year Kurtus and Laura Goepel met. They dated
for three years and on July 24, 1999, Kurtus and Laura were joined in Christian
marriage at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City.

They moved to Iowa City in August of 1999 where Kurtus worked for MCI and HyVee
South Deli, Iowa City while attending night classes at Kirkwood Community
College.

Kurtus loved to spend as much time with Laura as possible. They planned trips to
travel to new places to experience new things together. He had such a gentle
spirit and courteous to all. Kurtus also loved being with his sisters and his
nephews.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Laura and parents; are his sisters,
Christena, Melissa and Sara Miller, all of New London; grandparents, Harold and
Edna Stillwell, of Davenport, Janet Claeys, of Bettendorf, Robert and Pam
Miller, of Reno, Nev.; great-grandmothers, Velma Piersall, of Davenport and
Irene Epach, of Marietta, Ga.; in-laws, Craig and Jean Goepel, of Britt; sister-
in-law, Sarah Goepel, of Ames, Stacey Goepel and his wife, Kari, and their two
sons, Seth and Kolby, of Britt; grandparents-in-law, Gene and Arlene Goepel, of
Britt, and Lee and Tom Whitty, of Belmond.

Kurtus was a wonderful husband, son, brother, brother-in-law and friend to all,
and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

A memorial fund in Kurtus' name has been established to the glory of God.

FRED A. DIEKMANN JR.

ALGONA - Fred A. Diekmann Jr., 81, of Algona, died Wednesday (March 8, 2000) at
the Good Samaritan Center in Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist
Church of Algona, with the Rev. Philip J. Webb officiating. Burial will be in
Evergreen Cemetery in Wesley, with military graveside services by the Hagg-
Turner American Legion Post #90 and V.F.W. Post #2541 of Algona.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-
Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona, with Masonic services at 7 p.m. by the Prudence
Lodge #205 A.F. & A.M. of Algona.

EVELYN MILLER

WEBSTER CITY - Evelyn Miller, 82, a former Webster City resident, died Tuesday
(March 7, 2000) at the U.S.A. Healthcare in Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Foster Funeral Home in
Webster City, with Pastor Ray Artrip officiating. Burial was in the Graceland
Cemetery in Webster City.

Visitation was held on Thursday at the Foster Funeral Home and one hour prior to
services on Friday.

Evelyn Roberta Tash, daughter of Thomas and Edna (Matthews) Tash was born May
27, 1917, on a farm near Webster City. She attended rural schools and graduated
from Lincoln High School in Webster City. She also attended Normal training and
taught in rural schools in Hamilton County.

On June 2, 1939, she married James "Bud" Miller at Webster City. The couple
farmed north of Blairsburg from 1939 to 1955, then moved to a farm two miles
east of Webster City. She was a homemaker and co-farmed with her husband. Mr.
Miller died Jan. 24, 1996. She continued to reside on the family farm. She had
resided at the care center since May of 1998.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Judith Miller, of Clear
Lake; daughter and son-in-law, Kathie and Bill Ruth, of Altoona; grandchildren,
Dawn Hejna, Blake and J.D. Miller, Jodee Esser, Scott Wailes and Tami Chambers;
eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Clair Tash, of Fort Dodge; and several
nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother,
Wilbur Tash; and nephew, Dick Tash.

She was a member of the Church of Christ in Webster City, former member of the
Rural Women's Chorus, Ruth Circle, a W.C.T.U. member, a strong Democratic Party
supporter and involved in many of the Stonega area activities.

CRYSTAL LAKE - Ruby Christenson, 92, formerly of Crystal Lake, died Friday
(March 10, 2000) at the Colonial Acres Care Center in Golden Valley, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Petersen Lund Funeral
Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City. Burial will be in the Crystal Lake
Cemetery.

CHARLES CITY - Gerald J. Miller, 80, of 909 Seventh Ave., died Thursday (March
9, 2000) at the 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Saint John
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Mark Anderson
officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens south of Charles
City, with military honors by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

CHARLES CITY - Loretta T. (Mrs. Richard) Borchardt, 91, of Burlington, formerly
of Charles City, died Thursday (March 9, 2000) at the Floyd County Memorial
Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Saint John Evangelical
Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert Streets in Charles City, with the Rev. Mark A.
Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural
Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral
Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, with the family present from 3 to 6 p.m.

BARBARA JACOBS

GREENE - Funeral services for Barbara Jacobs, 59, of 509 N. Second St., will be
held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor
Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in
Greene, with a public scripture at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour
prior to services on Monday at the church.

Barbara June Jacobs was born June 30, 1940 in rural Fremont Township, Butler
County, a daughter of Peter "Bill" and Ella (Voights) Jacobs and died Thursday
(March 9, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City from an
aneurysm.

She received her education in the Greene Public Schools graduating in 1959. At
the age of 18, she became employed at the Arends Nursing Home in Clarksville.
She attended North Iowa Area Community College where she received her L.P.N.
degree; she later received her R.N. degree at Hawkeye Tech School of Nursing.

Barbara's career in health care included working for the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason
City, Allison Care Center and Director of Nursing at the Dumont Care Center
where she was employed until her death. Her caring manner and compassion given
to the elderly will never be forgotten.

Barbara's interests included fishing, deer hunting and traveling. Her family and
grandchildren were very important to her. She was an original member of the
Greene Volunteer Ambulance Crew, member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a
volunteer at the Nutrition Site.

She was baptized on July 20, 1940 and confirmed a member of St. John's
Evangelical Lutheran Church at Vilmar in 1955. She became a member of St. Peter
Lutheran Church in Greene on Nov. 11, 1970. She was a member of the W.E.L.C.A.

Living family members include her son, Michael Dean and his wife, Barbara
Jacobs, of Greene; four grandchildren, Sean, Erica, Colton and Levi; five
sisters, Gladys Young, of Finchford, Donna and her husband, Jim Spratt, of
Greene, JoAnn and her husband, Leon Berger, of Waverly, Judith and her husband,
Lemar Chester, of Clarksville and Janet Platte, of Ankeny; two brothers, LeRoy
and his wife, Leona Jacobs, of Clarksville, and Richard and Marian Jacobs, of
Greene; a sister-in-law, Angie Jacobs, of Waverly; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Earl Jacobs on Feb.
6, 1996.

Cecile was born Aug. 8, 1910, in Manchester, N.H., the daughter of Euthimios and Maria (Daskaliou) Argerous.

She married E.B. "Joe" Jolas in July of 1929 in Manchester. They lived in Red Oak, Iowa for many years moving to Mason City in 1972. She was a member of the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, Eastern Star 50-year member, founding member of Daughters of Penelope in Omaha, Neb., and Philotohs.

She is survived by a daughter, Bessie Paloumpis and husband, Andreras, of Tampa, Fla.; one son, Thomas E. Jolas and wife, Linda, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Van and Paul Jolas, Stephanie Jolas Durkin, Tom and Evan Paloumpis; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, E.B. Joe Jolas, one brother, Christopher Argerous and one granddaughter, Andrea Maria Paloumpis.

KARL GROH

MASON CITY - Karl Groh, 78, of 73 Briarstone Court, died Friday (March 10, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Messiah Lutheran Church, Highway 122 East with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Messiah Lutheran Church Building Fund, where Karl spent his last year dedicated to the planning and construction of the new Messiah Lutheran Church, a project dear to his heart.

Karl was born May 5, 1921, in Britt, the son of Henry and Catherine (Dumler) Groh. He attended Mason City schools. As a youth he participated in the Iowa Golden Gloves boxing competitions.

Karl was united in marriage to Doris R. Fairbanks on Oct. 13, 1940, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church parsonage by Rev. C.A. Hinz. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He owned and operated Karl Groh Construction Company and later Groh Alert Excavating in partnership with his son-in-law, Ken Alert. He retired in 1984. He took an interest in numerous civic and political activities. He was an accomplished bowler being inducted into the Hall of Fame here in Mason City and an avid golfer, winning many tournaments in both sports. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mason City Men's Bowling Association, Highland Park Men's League and past chairman of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where he held numerous positions. He especially enjoyed family get-togethers with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those thankful for sharing his life and who are benefiting from his influence and guidance include his wife of 59 years, Doris, of Mason City; daughters, Kathy and her husband, Clyde Janssen, of Clear Lake, Linda and her husband, Ken Alert, of Mason City; and Karla and her husband, Randy Crow, of Wheaton, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Molly Eden of Davenport, Ann Hegg, of California and Marie and her husband, Victor Miller, of Mason City; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, one sister and one son-in-law, Donald D. Wendel.

Visitation will be after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral chapel, using the East doors. Cremation will be at Cremation Services of North Iowa.

Barbara was born on Sept. 23, 1958 to Harold and Beverly Jean (Lux) Platts. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1977 and then continued on to graduate from North Iowa Area Community College in 1979 with an LPN degree in nursing. She later returned to NIACC and received her RN degree in 1994. She was a nurse at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Mason City for most of her career.

Barbara was united in marriage to Bob Wales on May 23, 1983, at St. James Lutheran Church. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family.

Those who shared in Barbara's life include: her parents, Harold and Beverly Jean Platts, her two children: Chelsea and Wesley Wales; her brother, David and his wife, Sherri Platts; two nephews, Brandon and Collin Platts; and her maternal grandmother, Rose Alma Lux, all of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Kenneth Lux and her paternal grandparents, George and Gertrude Platts.

ALLIE MAE MULHERN

MASON CITY - Allie Mae Mulhern, 106, of Mason City, died Friday (March 10, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. with the Rev. Randy Nielsen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held for one hour before service time at the funeral home.

Allie was born Aug. 26, 1893, in rural Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Martha (Norris) VerVerka. She attended country school in Poweshiek County.

She was united in marriage to Fred Mulhern in July 1912 in Brooklyn. They moved to a farm near Mason City in 1918, where she was a homemaker. She worked at Armour from 1945 until 1957. After Fred's death in 1957, she sold their farm and moved to town. She became an active member of the Senior Citizens Center and the Grandmother's Club and was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Mason City. She enjoyed playing canasta, traveling with the grandmothers and growing flowers and vegetables in her garden. She lost her sight in 1968 but continued to live alone until 1993, when she moved to the Good Shepherd. She was a very strong, courageous and independent lady.

Survivors include one son, Fred Mulhern and his wife, Alice, of Mason City; two daughters, Mildred Losh of Mason City and Colleen Seel of Fort Collins, Colo.; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren; one nephew and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, two sisters, six brothers and two granddaughters.

ALICE V. GALVIN

MASON CITY - Alvin V. Galvin, 83, of 2 North Quincy Terrace, died Saturday (March 11, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 126 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. Kathy Graves officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Tuesday until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

EMANUEL 'MONTY' SPEAKAR

MASON CITY - Emanuel "Monty" Speakar, 84, of Mason City, died Friday (March 10, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City with the Rev. Samuel Hamilton-Poore officiating. The family will greet friends at a luncheon following the service. Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Monty was born Aug. 11, 1915, in Mason City, the son of John and Elizabeth (Speaker) Speakar. He attended country school near Mason City and after school, worked for several years at the Decker Plant. He then started his own well drilling business, working with different partners in Charles City, Fredericksburg, and Mason City. Monty served in the United States Navy during World War II, from 1943 to 1945, as a ship's cook.

After his honorable discharge, he returned to northern Iowa and was united in marriage to Dorothy A. Bagney in 1947 in Lake Mills. They lived in Mason City where Monty continued to work as a self-employed well driller, until his retirement in 1971. He enjoyed tinkering with small engines, especially lawn tractors, watching old Western movies on television, playing cards and going to casinos. He also was an avid hunter and fisherman, whose best trip was a journey through Alaska with a friend. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the VFW Post 733, and a former member of the Mason City Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his four children, James Speakar and his wife, Linda, and Deanna Carle and her husband, Chuck, all of Kansas City, Mo., Robert Speakar and his wife, Jenny, and Monte Speakar, all of Mason City; one sister, Marie Stricker and her husband, Dave, of Clear Lake; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a very good friend, Jim Fank, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy, one son, Bill and three brothers, Alex, Robert and John.

GEORGE LESLIE WESCOTT, JR.

SPENCER - George Leslie Wescott, Jr., 70, of Spencer, died Tuesday (March 7, 2000) at his home.

Graveside memorial services will be held at a later date. Warner Funeral Home, 225 West Third St., Spencer, is in charge of arrangements.

George Leslie Wescott, Jr., was born Feb. 17, 1930, in Freeborn County, Minn., the son of George Leslie and Mary Lennetta Otto Wescott, Sr. He received his education and graduated from Northwood High School in 1949. He later attended Hamilton Business College.

George was united in marriage to Marjorie Wescott on Sept. 30, 1950 in the First Lutheran Church, Northwood. On Jan. 11, 1952, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict as a corporal. He received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and two Overseas Bars, and one Silver Star. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 10, 1953. He then transferred to the Army Reserve to complete eight years of training.

George spent all of his adult life in northwest Iowa, where he was a salesman for the Northwestern States Portland Cement Company in Mason City. He retired in 1982 after 28 years with the company. He was affiliated with the Lutheran Church in Mason City and was a member of the Moose Lodge. Following his retirement, he moved to Spencer.

Survivors include his two sons, George Wescott III, of Mason City, Kirk Wescott and his wife, Jeri, of Hartley; one daughter, Julie Nauss of Mason City; special friend, Marjorie Wescott, of Mason City; six grandchildren; two sisters, Naomi Brand of Princeton, Minn., and Priscilla Barthelman of Alcona, Mich.; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Gregory Lee Wescott.

BELMOND -Stephen N. Hinman, 86, of Belmond, died Saturday (March 11, 2000) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at United Church of Christ Congregational, Belmond, with the Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Stephen N. Hinman was born Sept. 19, 1913, on the family farm west of Belmond, the son of Arthur C. and Marjorie (McGrann) Hinman. He lived and worked on the family farm until he went to college at Iowa City and then to Iowa State. Stephen came back to work on the family farm until he entered the United States Army during World War II. After his discharge he did carpentry work along with farming.

He was united in marriage to Hazel Tegland on June 17, 1945, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Belmond. They farmed together west of Belmond until their retirement in 1977.

He was very active in his church, serving in many offices, as Sunday School superintendent for 25 years, as did his father and grandfather. He and Hazel served many years as secretary and treasurer of the Belmond United Church of Christ. He kept his farmstead in immaculate condition, and his articles of woodworking will always remind family and friends of his craftsmanship and intricate inlaid and marquetry in wood. He enjoyed playing cribbage, his exotic garden, enjoyed traveling, was a self-taught organ player and was a member of the Odd Fellows.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel, of Belmond; sons, Stephen A. Hinman and his wife, Sharion, of Belmond, Donald Hinman of New York, N.Y., Wayne Hinman, of Belmond and David Hinman, of Reno, Nev.; five grandchildren, Chad and Anthony Hinman, of Cedar Rapids, Maryann Hinman, of Independence, Neal Hinman and his fiancée, Jessica Yenter, of Stanhope, and Michele Miltenberger and her husband, Jason, of Des Moines; brother, George Hinman and his wife, Imogene, of Belmond; and sisters, Ellen Ahlstrom of Aplington, and Ruth Baldwin of Victorville, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

KARL GROH

MASON CITY - Karl Groh, 78, of 73 Briarstone Court, died Friday (March 10, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after a recent diagnosis of leukemia.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Messiah Lutheran Church, Highway 122 East, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Messiah Lutheran Church Building Fund, where Karl spent his last year dedicated to the planning and construction of the new Messiah Lutheran Church, a project dear to his heart.

Karl was born May 5, 1921, in Britt, the son of Henry and Catherine (Dumler) Groh. He attended Mason City schools. As a youth he participated in the Iowa Golden Gloves boxing competitions.

Karl was united in marriage to Doris R. Fairbanks on Oct. 13, 1940, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church parsonage by Rev. C.A. Hinz. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He owned and operated Karl Groh Construction Company and later Groh Alert Excavating in partnership with his son-in-law, Ken Alert. He retired in 1984.

He took an interest in numerous civic and political activities. He was an accomplished bowler, being inducted into the Hall of Fame here in Mason City, and an avid golfer, winning many tournaments in both sports. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mason City Men's Bowling Association, Highland Park Men's League and past chairman of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where he held numerous positions. He especially enjoyed family get-togethers with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those thankful for sharing his life and who are benefiting from his influence and guidance include his wife of 59 years, Doris, of Mason City; daughters, Kathy and her husband, Clyde Janssen, of Clear Lake, Linda and her husband, Ken Alert, of Mason City; Karla and her husband, Larry Pals, of Belmond, and Kris and her husband, Randy Crow, of Wheaton, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Molly Eden of Davenport, Ann Hegg of California and Marie and her husband, Victor Miller, of Mason City; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, one sister and one son-in-law, Donald D. Wendel.

She met Melvin Peterson at an early age and was united in marriage. She later was married to Robert Galvin in 1965. She was an active member of the Women of the Eagles. She enjoyed fishing when she was younger, around Clear Lake, Rice Lake, and with an occasional trip to Okoboji. She also enjoyed playing "Hucklebuck" and "21" card games with her friends.

Those who shared in Alice's life include her daughter, Vicky and her husband, Lowell Murphy, Mason City; her four sons, Gary and his friend, Roberta Peterson, Ft. Bragg, Calif.; Dennis and his wife, Delores Peterson, Melvin and his wife, Carol Peterson Jr., Clifford and his wife, Sandra Peterson, all of Mason City; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great- grandchildren.

MASON CITY - Patricia Ruth Hemsey Crail, 65, of Mason City, died suddenly Sunday (March 12, 2000) in Jacksonville, N.C., while on spring break.

Mrs. Crail was born May 3, 1934, to the late Clayton and Harriet (Grignon) Hemsey. She attended the University of Wisconsin and Northwestern University and taught Spanish at NIACC.

She is survived by four children, Elizabeth Crail, Andrew Crail, Bonnie Adams and Heather Sawyer; three brothers, Clayton Hemsey, Bill Hemsey and Russell Hemsey; six grandchildren, Tom Sawyer, Thea Sawyer, Mark Adams, Tim Adams, Rebekah Adams and Luke Adams; and many friends and relatives.

She was a woman of faith, humor and great love, and she was a wonderful friend. She will be sorely missed.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City. Memorials are preferred.

MARGARETA S. HARTMANN

MASON CITY - Margareta S. Hartmann, 93, of 222 S. Pierce Ave., died Monday (March 13, 2000) at the U.S.A. Healthcare of Mason City.

Private family services will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Hartmann was born Nov. 23, 1906, in Witzwort, Germany, the daughter of Jakob and Anna (Tedsen) Molck. She attended school in Germany.

In June of 1925, she was united in marriage with Christian Petersen. He died in 1953. In 1956 Margareta emigrated to the United States and married Max Hartmann. He died in 1970.

Her family includes one daughter, Elfrieda K. Kowalewski, of Mason City; and one grandson, Karl Kowalewski and his wife, Paulette, of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews.

Margareta is preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, six brothers and five sisters.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge #1328 since 1969 and also a member of the V.F.W.

He is survived by two sisters, Mary Grefe, of Mason City, and Ruth Corlew, of Newton.

Goldie was born on Feb. 3, 1901, at Cleveland, Minn., one of three children of Edwin and May M. Gallager Williams. Her father worked for the Rock Island Railroad and they lived in South Dakota for several years until moving to various areas.

Goldie then moved to Mason City and has lived here most of her life. She was united in marriage to William Groth and later married Ray Pickett, who preceded her in death in 1950. Goldie worked as a clerk for several area retail stores until working for Damon's Clothing store until her retirement. She was a former member of the Ladies of the Moose.

Goldie is survived by her nieces, Betty Carter, of Tacoma Park, Md. and Patricia and her husband, Bill Carr, of Loveland, Colo.; two nephews, Jack Russel and his special friend, Donna Poole, both of Clear Lake and Bill and his wife, Alice Russel, of Auburn, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray; one sister, Eva Russel; and one brother, Chester Williams.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church, with the Rev. Darrell Weber officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner, with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St. in Garner and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Gordon Earl Upmeyer, the son of Arthur and Mary (Goll) Upmeyer, was born Oct. 10, 1923, on a farm southwest of Garner. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church. Gordon attended school at Liberty Township #2 through eighth grade and then attended Garner High School, graduating in 1941.

In June of 1943, he entered the military, serving in the U.S. Navy until March of 1946. Gordon received the Purple Heart after his ship was hit by two Japanese suicide planes near Iwo Jima.

On April 2, 1946, he married Marguerite Marie Borchers at the United Methodist Church in Garner. They farmed southwest of Garner until they moved into town in the sharpening business for several years.

Gordon was an avid gardener and enjoyed woodworking, having built several grandfather clocks and many walnut cedar chests in his home shop. He also built furniture for each of his grandchildren from walnut trees planted by his grandfather on the home farm. Marguerite and Gordon had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 2, 1996.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church and the adult Bible class and sang in the choir and served as a deacon, elder and chairman of the building committee for the new parsonage. He was a vice-president of the Hancock County Farm Bureau board, a long time member of the Liberty Go-Getters 4-H Club and was a charter member of the Iowa River Chapter FFA. He had received his Iowa Farmer Award in Kansas City, Mo.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Upmeyer, of Garner; three children, Kathy Woiwod, of Garner and her three children, Elizabeth Waddingham and her husband, Mark and their three children, Megan, Brooke and Benjamin, Susan Woiwod and Neal Woiwod, Doug Upmeyer and his wife, Linda, of Garner and their five children, Sara, Chad, Matt, Blake and Tyler Upmeyer and Ron Upmeyer and his wife, Marcia, of Garner and their two children, Adam Upmeyer and his wife, Denise and Mary Upmeyer; two brothers, Alton Upmeyer and his wife, Fae, of Hemit, Calif. and Curtis Upmeyer and his wife, Anna Mae, of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents; a son-in-law, Arlo Woiwod, Jan. 23, 1991; and a grandson, Andy Upmeyer on April 20, 1992.

RONALD GENE CHIPP

DES MOINES - Ronald Gene Chipp, 55, of 2619 E. Douglas, died Monday (March 13, 2000) at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. in Des Moines. Burial will be in St. Marys Cemetery in St. Marys, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hamilton's Funeral Home.

Ronald Gene Chipp was born in Osceola and spent most of his life in Des Moines, with the exception of five years in Tennessee.

He graduated from Osceola High School in 1962. He married Leanna Cornelson in 1963. He married Virginia Jones on July 21, 1981.

He had been employed at Delavan, Massey Ferguson, Pittsburg Des Moines Steel, Erickson Display and JNJ Fab. His last place of employment was Hickland Engineering, where he worked as a machinist.

He was a member of the Carlisle Lion's Club and he had been a Cub Scout Master.

He loved working on used lawn mowers, snowblowers and putzing in his garage. His hobbies included boating and playing pool.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Chipp, of Des Moines; his mother, Vera Chipp, of Osceola; his son and daughter-in-law, Darren and Jeanine Chipp, of Latimer; his son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Marj Chipp, of Latimer; his daughter and son-in-law, Deena Swyers and Nell, of Steelville, Mo.; his brother and wife, Earl and Barb Chipp, of Osceola; his sister, Merna Chipp, of Des Moines; his stepdaughter, Kim Miller, of Des Moines; his stepson, Lewis Brundige, of Des Moines; his grandchildren, Lucas, Levi and Logan; his stepgrandchildren, Amy and Eric Bahnsen, Jessica and Erin Miller, Carl Swyers, and Wesley Swyers.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Deanna, in 1973; and his father, Urman Chipp, in 1996.

DONALD A. BRANDAU

OSAGE - Donald A. Brandau, 58, of Osage, died Monday (March 13, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Don was born May 1, 1941, at Charles City, the son of Lloyd and Ida (Mills) Brandau. He attended schools in Osage and Rudd. He farmed and currently was employed at Winnebago Industries in Charles City.

He enjoyed working on cars, car racing, fishing, camping, being outdoors and spending time with family. Donald was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St. in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. Interment will be in the Eden Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Rudd.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Champion Funeral Home.

Donald is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Brandau and her children, Rebecca Deetz and Christopher Deetz, of Osage and Emmalee Brandau, of Osage; a son, Allen Brandau and his wife, Elisa, of Savannah, Ga.; and a special friend and fiancee, Laurie Martin, of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother-in-law.
