MASON CITY - Rose Aileen Cooling, 94, of 304 Third St. N.E., Apt. 411, died Tuesday (June 20, 2000) at home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Dougherty.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:15 p.m. followed by a scriptural prayer at 7 p.m.

RAY GRIFFIN

WEBSTER CITY - Ray Griffin, 68, of Webster City, died Sunday (June 18, 2000) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Foster Funeral Home in Webster City, with Cindi O'Brien, ministry assistant, officiating. Burial will be in the Cass Township Cemetery, north of Webster City, with graveside military rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 191.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Foster Funeral Home and on Thusday until time of services.

Ray Verle Griffin, son of Bryan and Mary (Miller) Griffin, was born Feb. 28, 1932, on a farm northeast of Webster City. He attended school at Blairsburg. In 1942, the family moved to Buffalo Center. He graduated from high school at Buffalo Center in 1949.

During the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Navy on the hospital ship Repose and the cruiser Quincy. Following his discharge, he started farming at Buffalo Center in 1954. He moved to a farm northeast of Webster City in March of 1961. He retired from farming in 1997.

He was a former member of the Mulberry Center United Methodist Church and American Legion Post No. 191.

He is survived by a brother, Lee Griffin, of Buffalo Center; sister, Ruth Adams, of Webster City; nephews, Michael Adams, of Dodge Center, Minn.; Bryan Gilbert and James Adams, both of Webster City and Ed Griffin, of Buffalo Center; nieces, Julie Christianson, of Eden Prairie, Minn. and Amy Kleckner, of Altoona.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Kathryn Gilbert; nephew, Steven Griffin; and niece, Maureen Griffin.

VIOLA RUTH MORRIS

BELMOND - Funeral services for Viola Ruth Morris, 85, of Belmond, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery in Belmond.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services today at the church.

Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond is in charge of arrangements.

Viola (Soma) Morris, daughter of Elling and Anna (Michaelson) Soma was born June 1, 1915 at home near Kanawha. She attended country school near Kanawha and graduated from Belmond High School with the Class of 1933.

She was united in marriage to Francis L. Morris on Sept. 14, 1938, and to this union three children were born.

Viola loved to garden and bake, her specialty being Kringla. She learned to sew and knit in later years and loved to make quilts.

Viola was very active in the Trinity Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school, Bible school, confirmation and was active in Church circles. She held various offices and served on many committees.

Viola died on Monday (June 19, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City at the age of 85.

Those grateful for sharing her life are her husband, Francis, of Belmond; son, Richard Morris and his wife, Sherry, of Belmond; daughter, Eileen Pross and her husband, Craig, of Mason City; son, Dwight Morris and his wife, DeLores, of Belmond; eight grandchildren, Robert and Jennifer Morris, of Des Moines, Sonya and Daniel Nisley, of Gilman, Laurie and Mark Galloway, of Egan, Minn., Leanne and Jon Alexandres, of Egan, Minn. Joelyn and Michael Kelly, of Egan, Minn., Ryan Pross and his fiancee, Angela Beeman, of Mason City; nine great-grandchildren, Taylor Morris, Kyle and Jason Nisley, Meghan and Benjamin Galloway, Zachary and Eric Alexandres, and Michael and Alyson Kelly; three sisters, Bernice Sebert, of Belmond, Adelaide Hill, of Belmond, and Margaret Dorenkamp, of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two grandsons, Chad Morris and Jon Morris; four brothers; and three sisters.

SILVI KAPPA

MASON CITY - Silvi Kappa, 84, of 324 Second St. N.E., died Monday (June 19, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John L. "Jack" Gannett officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the Church.

Silvi was born Jan. 26, 1916, in Love, Valga, Estonia, the daughter of Tomis and Anu (Sumberg) Tonisson. She attended school in Estonia and lived there until the age of 28.

She married Johannes Kappa on Feb. 1, 1947, in Engelstadt, West Germany. They came to the United States in 1949 and settled in Mason City in 1951.

Silvi was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Silvi is survived by her husband, Johannes Kappa, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother.

ERVIN L. MUHLENBRUCK

LATIMER - Funeral services for Ervin L. Muhlenbruck, 82, of Latimer, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Latimer. Burial will follow in St. Paul's Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Willim Funeral Home in Latimer, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Ervin L. was born Dec. 19, 1917, the son of Dick and Emma (Freie) Muhlenbruck. He was born on a farm just north of Latimer, moving into Latimer in 1940. On April 8, 1941, he was united in marriage to Marian M. Schumacher.

Ervin worked at the Carl Weeks Farm and Lemke Service Station until he was inducted into the Army where he served 3 1/2 years in Normandy, France and England. He was a heavy equipment operator clearing the beaches of mines.

He was awarded the Bronze Star and other medals for his service. In 1997, he was awarded the Liberty Medal by French Deputy Council General Stephane Catta, commemorating the anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Ervin worked for the Franklin County Garage driving a maintainer for many years. He worked for an electrical company putting up big electrical poles from Mason City to Fort Dodge. Ervin also worked for the Iowa State Highway Commission until his retirement. He then started mowing for Franklin County every summer for eight years.

Ervin died Tuesday (June 20, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City at the age of 82.

Ervin was a 50-year member of the American Legion of Latimer; a member of Stockdale Gun Club, Ventura Gun Club and the Iowa State Trap Shooters, of Cedar Falls.

Ervin enjoyed many things. He enjoyed playing in Mike Smith's Orchestra for many years, playing his guitar, taking walks to feed the birds, golfing and working with his old Oliver Row Crop 77 tractor.

He is survived by his wife, Marian, of Latimer; son, Ronnie, of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Laura and Russell; and sisters, Dorthy Rasmussen, of Sheffield and Agnes Lage, of Meservey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter; three sisters, Tillie Plagge, Lydia Klunder and Alberta Muhlenbruck; and four brothers, Alva, Harry, Lloyd and Bernard.

ROGER W. STIGEN

LA CROSSE, Wis. - Roger W. Stigen, 74, of La Crosse, formerly of Mason City, passed away Monday (June 19, 2000) at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in La Crosse. He was born Feb. 13, 1926, in Westby, Wis., to William and Inga (Tomtengen) Stigen.

On April 25, 1950, he was united in marriage to Marilouise Blihovde at the Upper Coon Valley Lutheran Church. Roger was a life long Lutheran and a member of St. Paul's ELCA Lutheran Church in La Crosse.

He was a United States Army veteran,, having served during the Korean War. Upon returning from his military duty, he was employed as a project engineer and design draftsman.

Roger was a member of the (EAA) Experimental Aircraft Association. Roger also provided service to the community by being a member of AARP, the Moose Lodge and the American Legion. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing and volunteer work.

Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandpa. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Marilouise; five children, Ed (Cathy) Stigen, of Tomah, Wis., Wanda Chapman, of La Crosse, Shelly (Mike) Lorens, of La Crosse, Wis., Rebecca (Troy) Stayton, of La Crosse and Audra Stigen, of La Habra, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Amie, Laura, Eric and April Stigen, Michael and Chris Chapman, Mitchell and Emma Lorens, and Noah Stayton; and other relatives and many wonderful friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, LeRoy Stigen; two sisters, Mae Stigen and Elaine Melby.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's ELCA Lutheran Church in La Crosse, Wis., with Pastor Duane A. Kamrath officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be given to the St. Paul's ELCA Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Wis., Building Fund, in memory of Roger.

TODD FREDERICK STUMPE

MASON CITY - Todd Frederick Stumpe, 22, of Riverside, Calif., formerly of Mason City, died Sept. 21, 1988 in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, with the Rev. Jack Gannett of Trinity Lutheran Church of Mason City officiating.

MASON CITY - Jeanne E. Adams, 76, formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at the Donnellson Health Care Center in Donnellson.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. David Werges of Grace Lutheran Church of Hanlontown officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Swaledale.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel.

Jeanne was born on Feb. 19, 1924, in Mason City, the daughter of John and Violet (French) Kisner. She grew up in Mason City and attended school in Ventura.

Jeanne was united in marriage to John H. Weaver in 1942, and they later divorced. She then married Richard Adams in 1973, and they later divorced.

Jeanne worked for many years in nursing homes. Later, she moved to Burlington, where she worked for Riley Oil Co.

Jeanne enjoyed fishing, gardening and family picnics. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3416 in Mason City for 26 years.

Jeanne is survived by three daughters, Patricia Weaver, of Oakville, Charlene Waters, of Wichita, Kan. and Susan Pratt, of West Burlington; one son, John L. Weaver, of Chicago, Ill.; and three sisters, Virginia Jones, of Iowa Falls and Donna Hutzel and Marilyn Werner, both of Mason City; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; one brother; and one son, Dennis Weaver.

STANLEY K. MOE

CLARION - Stanley K. Moe, 87, of Clarion, passed away Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at his home in Clarion.

Memorial services for Stanley Moe will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond, with Pastor Celestyne DeVance officiating. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery near Belmond, with military honors conducted by the Belmond Honor Guard.

There will be no visitation, the body has been cremated.

Stanley, the son of Louis and Jannette (Sorenson) Moe was born Nov. 17, 1912, in Belmond. He grew up in Belmond and graduated from Belmond High School in 1932.

Stanley was united in marriage with Mary Francis Kelly in 1936. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Belmond.

Stanley was inducted into the United States Army in February of 1943. He was a master sergeant in the 528th Engr. L P Co. His company played a major roll in constructing bridges for river crossings for General Patton and the 3rd Armored Division in France.

He served his country in several battles and campaigns during WWII, including Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. Stanley was awarded the Bronze Star in March of 1945. Following his discharge in 1945, Stanley returned to the Belmond area.

Stanley farmed three miles west of Belmond for 20 years. He also operated Moe Construction Company for seven years, and was a greens keeper at the Claremond Country Club for five years. Stanley retired in 1976. Mary Francis passed away in 1979.

Stanley was united in marriage with Edythe V. Brooks in 1983 in Las Vegas, Nev. The couple made their home in Clarion.

Stanley was a charter member of the Belmond VFW. He loved to hunt and fish.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Edythe, of Clarion; son, David Moe and his wife, Barbara, of Pekin, Ill.; stepson, Tim Brooks and his wife, Barbara, of Goldfield; stepdaughter, Penny Mericle and her husband, Craig, of Nora Springs; three grandchildren, John, Toni and Kelly; one great-granddaughter, Katlyn; six stepgrandchildren, Travis, Jon, Robyn, Michael, Hollie and Laina; brother, Bennett Moe and his wife, Francis, of Spring Valley, Calif.; one niece and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mary Francis; two stepchildren, Randy and Colleen Brooks; one sister, Elaine Overturf; and one nephew.

ALBERT R. 'BUD' LARSON

SCARVILLE - Albert R. "Bud" Larson, 77, of Scarville, died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville, with the Rev. Randy Baldwin officiating. Interment will be at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Scarville.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills.

Albert Raymond Larson was born Jan. 5, 1923, at Scarville, to Christ and Ingri (Folken) Larson. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church and remained a member of the congregation throughout his life.

Albert graduated from Scarville High School in 1941 and was a member of the basketball team that won the county tournament two years and advanced to the sectional tournament in 1941.

He entered the U.S. Army during the Second World War and served from Jan. 18, 1943, to Jan. 6, 1946, in the U.S. Army in Europe. Albert was awarded Overseas Service Bars, the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon, the Bronze Battle Star and the Victory Medal.

Albert returned home after the war and worked with his brother, Luther, in the electrical business. After becoming disabled in a construction accident, Albert operated a Scarville business for a number of years.

He is survived by one sister, Ingeborg Bye, of Albert Lea, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Freida Larson, of Milford and Beverly Larson, of Buffalo Center; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wilhelm, Luther and Irving; and two sisters, Thea and Lucille.

ROCKFORD - Lydia B. Hermann, 105, of Yankton, S.D., formerly of Rockford, died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at the Alvera Sister James Nursing Home in Yankton, S.D.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville, rural Marble Rock, with burial in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock, with a wake service and rosary at 7 p.m.

INEZ A. ERICKSON

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Memorial services for Inez A. Erickson will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Charter House in Rochester, with the Rev. Ann Opitz, Charter House chaplain, officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the Silver Lake Cemetery in Northwood.

Mrs. Erickson, 95, of the Charter House, died there Thursday (June 22, 2000) of congestive heart failure.

Inez A. Rood was born April 6, 1905, in Cooperstown, N.D., and raised by her maternal grandparents in Lake Mills, graduating from high school in 1924. She then attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, and after receiving her teaching certificate, was a rural school teacher in Worth County.

On Oct. 2, 1926, she married Walter C. Nystuen in Des Moines. Mr. Nystuen was an Iowa School Superintendent and the couple lived in northern Iowa communities. She continued to teach in rural schools and did substitute teaching. She lived in Northwood from 1968 to 1975. Mr. Nystuen died in January of 1972.

On Dec. 7, 1975, she married H. Lee Erickson in Northwood. The couple lived in Clear Lake in the summers and wintered in Mesa, Ariz., from 1975 to 1989. Mr. Erickson died in August of 1989 and Mrs. Erickson moved to Charter House in October of 1989.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Qualey and her husband, Lyle, of Rochester; her son, Richard W. Nystuen, of Cedar Falls; two stepsons, Roger Erickson, of Estes Park, Colo. and Allen Erickson, of Federal Way, Wash.; five grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandchild; three half sisters; and one half brother.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands; one stepdaughter; and two half brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the Mayo Foundation.

OSAGE - Robert H. Pullen, 74, of Osage, died Thursday (June 22, 2000) at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan officiating. Graveside inurnment services will be held at a later date.
