MERLE LYNNE HANSON

HAMPTON - Merle Lynne Hanson was born June 26, 1954, at the Lutheran Hospital in Hampton, the daughter of Merle and Delores (Covell) Butt. On Friday (June 9, 2000) at 7:15 a.m. in her home, she went to be with her God she had so faithfully served all her life.

She did not succumb to cancer; as she said so many times, "the disease is much bigger than me and I am so tired." To the very end she continued serving and ministering to all the lives she touched.

On June 30, 1973, in the sanctuary of her beloved United Methodist Church of Hampton, she committed herself in marriage to the love of her life, Stephen C. Hanson, of Forest City.

Together they faithfully and proudly served the church from parish visitor, teachers, committee workers and chairs, confirmation sponsors and 8 1/2 years as custodians. Her last position was as chairperson of Administrative Council, from which she had to sorrowfully resign in May because of declining health.

To the union of her and Steve's marriage were born three sons of whom she proudly role-modeled family, education, church and community service: Chad and his wife, Heidi, Andrew and Stephen, all of Hampton. She was so proud of the title of "Grandma" to Chad and Heidi's 10-month-old daughter, Ally Lynne, born July 31, 1991. "That's my first Grandbaby" she would so proudly acclaim.

Lynne's life was devoted to being a wife, mother, daughter, sister, granddaughter and friend and to serving her God. She was baptized Easter Sunday in 1955 and confirmed a member of the Methodist Church in May of 1967. She was educated and graduated from Hampton High School in May of 1972. She attended Iowa State University for one year.

She was active in the Franklin County 4-H program, a State and National Youthpower winner, 1972 Iowa Duroc Queen and a National 4-H winner in Breads and Over-all Achievement. She continued to serve 4-H as a local and county leader, a financial counselor and Chair of Extension Council.

Her employment included being a City of Hampton meter maid, parish visitor, a day care provider, a florist for Mona's Florals and her recent position as accountant for the Times Citizen Communications of Iowa Falls.

Her life was committed to serving God, her family and friends, her school and her community. One of her greatest goals was a college degree and this she accomplished, graduating from NIACC in May of 1996 though ill with cancer and on chemotherapy all of the time.

She was devoted to supporting her boys and she did this as room mother, team mother, coach, umpire, spectator and any other capacity of volunteer needed to get the job done. She was active in Main Street, 4-H, Windsor Theatre, Dollars for Scholars, booster clubs and the Hampton Municipal Band - playing the timpani.

In January of 1980, as a partner with her mother, she opened "Lynne's Bridal Boutique" in her home. She was an accomplished seamstress, creating countless bridal and prom fashions of great beauty. Another accomplishment was opening her home to family gatherings, friends, and the numerous "other sons and daughters," her adopted kids. In 1994-1995, Lynne and Steve welcomed a foreign exchange student, Fabian, from Paraguay, into their home.

Left to mourn, but celebrate her life, is her husband, Steve, of almost 27 years; sons, Chad and his wife, Heidi and daughter, Ally Lynn, and Andrew and Stephen, all of Hampton; her father and mother, Merle and Delores; brother, Chuck and his wife, Sue, all of Hampton; a niece, Tanya, of Port St. Lucia, Fla.; nephews, James, of Garner and Scott, of Hampton. Pat and Chuck Covell, of Ames are a special aunt and uncle and cousins, Lanette Butt, of Norwalk, Chuck Covell and his wife, Shannon, of Ossian and Chris Covell and his wife, Pam, of Ames.

Everyone who knew Lynne learned to love her, and her friends were countless and of all ages. Among them were special friends, Bev and Gary Peters, Jill and Scott Peters, Shawn Donaldson, Oli Blasi, of Pella, Cheryl Rusley, Mona Storm and Corrine Hundahl, of Iowa Falls. Also a host of relatives, friends and her fellow employees.

Preceding her in death was her paternal grandfather, Carl Butt; her beloved grandmother, Irene Butt; her beloved grandfather, Chuck Covell; a special aunt, Karen Butt; special cousins, Rick Butt, Cynthia White and two children, Corey and Kevin, of Rock Falls.

Lynne's life was one of celebration. She lived each day to the fullest, never said "no" to a service or to someone's needs. Even while dying she ministered to everyone as she told them "good-bye." She was a living example of love and commitment to God, family, education, creativity, goal-setting and community service. She aggressively attacked her cancer for 7 1/2 years, never giving up hope, but accepting what she could not change.

She accomplished major goals - attending Hawkeye football games, seeing sons Chad and Andrew graduate from high school and college and Stephen from high school, attending and supporting all of her sons' activities, dancing and eating out with her husband, Steve, and friends; Chad's marriage and the birth of her granddaughter, Ally.

"Blessed is the wife and mother whose heart of love knows no boundaries and is filled with laughter and life is always a celebration, whose faith is rooted in God."
