RUDD - Graveside services for Stanley A. Witzel Sr., 95, formerly of Rudd, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at the Rudd Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Pippert officiating.

Stanley A. Witzel Sr. died Dec. 20, 1999 at his residence in Oceanside, Calif.

HARVEY F. GABEL

ROCKFORD - Harvey F. Gabel, 94, a former rural Rockford resident, died Tuesday (July 25, 2000) at the Muse Norrise Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Roseville, with Monsignor Walter Brunken officiating. Interment will be at 1:15 p.m. Friday at the Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church. There will be a parish rosary at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home and a wake service at 7 p.m.

MAXINE L. PELHAM

NORTHWOOD - Maxine Louise Pelham, 76, joined her husband in Heaven on Tuesday (July 25, 2000). She passed away peacefully at their home in Northwood.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama, with Patti Hoffman, pastoral associate at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tama, officiating.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling, chaplin at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, officiating.

According to her wishes the casket will be closed. Conner Colonial Chapel in Northwood is in charge of the arrangements.

Maxine was born on Aug. 9, 1923, to Ralph and Mary Corns in Tama. She attended and received her education in the Tama school system.

She was united in marriage to Mahlon "Pinky" Pelham on Aug. 5, 1949, in Marshall, Minn. He preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 1992. After their marriage they made their home in Tama until 1955, when Pinky joined the Iowa State Highway Patrol. They then moved to Mason City, where they lived for one year before making their home in Northwood.

Maxine worked at Conner's Sundries, Hanson TV, The Northwood Bakery and the Viking Restaurant, all in Northwood. She enjoyed her family, friends and her animals.

She also enjoyed her flowers, collecting dolls, going to their cabin on Lake Jefferson, Minn., and delivering motor homes with her husband.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Pinky; her parents, Ralph and Mary Corns; her brothers, Bill and Dick Corns; her sisters, Loretta Griffin and Ruth Peterson; brother-in-law, Jim Griffin; and sister-in-law, Irene Corns.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Steve Pelham of Northwood and special friend, Claudia Hopkey, of Mason City, Mahlon "Buster" Pelham and his wife, Gloria, of Bellflower, Calif., Larry Eckhart and his wife, Virginia, of Gladbrook, Kathie Eckhart of Marshalltown, and Craig Eckhart and his wife, Janice, of Northwood; seven grandchildren, Bonnie Franksain and her husband, Phil, of Gladbrook, Jenny Eckhart and her fiance, Chad Winkler, of Conrad, Erin and Kristin Pelham, of Bellflower, Calif., Lori Nelson and her husband, Berdale, of Glenville, Minn., Cindy Bass and her husband, Terry, of Northwood, and Brandy Trent and her husband, Vincent, of Rake; nine great-grandchildren, Laura, Rebecca and Rachael Franksain, Vinnie and Phoebe Trent, Dakota and Blair Nelson, and Craig "C.J." and Blake Bass; a sister-in-law, Gloria Corns of Marshalltown; and many nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

DARREL FRANCIS DEWITT

LARGO, Fla. - Darrel F. DeWitt, 52, died Tuesday (July 11, 2000) at home in Largo, Fla. from a brief illness with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Frederick J. Wood officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Darrel Francis DeWitt was born Oct. 15, 1947, in Mason City, a son of Francis E. and Rama L. (True) DeWitt. Darrel graduated from Mason City High School in 1966. He briefly attended NIACC before enlisting in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1970 and attained the rank of sergeant.

He received an AA degree in accounting at Hamilton Business College in 1972. He held various accounting jobs since that time, with his most recent at the Sage Corporation in Largo, Fla.

He married Andrea Strohbehn in 1972. They were blessed with two daughters, Melissa and Erin.

Darrel was very well liked by both friends and family. He loved to work many hours. He was a member of the International Jaycees.

Darrel is survived by his two daughters, Melissa and Erin DeWitt of Indianola; parents, Francis and Rama DeWitt of Mason City; three brothers, Dennis and his wife, Trish, of Penn Grove, Calif., Dick and his wife, Pat, of Sana Rosa, Calif., and Kim and his wife, Theresa, of Mason City; two sisters, Cheryl Allen of Sana Rosa, Calif. and Sherry Despenas of Minneapolis, Minn.; and many other relatives and friends.

Darrel was preceded in death by one sister, Terry Smith; and his grandparents.

THOMAS P. MCKEE

MASON CITY - Thomas P. McKee, 62, of 828 Ninth St. N.E., died Monday (July 24, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with Monsignor Joseph Slepicka officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, with flag-folding and Taps by Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a wake service at 7 p.m..

Memorials may be given to the Thomas P. McKee Memorial Fund.

Thomas P. McKee was born Aug. 24, 1937, in Mason City, the son of Rachel (LaVille) Johnson. He attended Holy Family School. He entered the U.S. Army in 1954 and served in Germany.

He returned to Mason City and worked at Kraft Foods, Mason City Scales for 13 years and Dyna Kleen for three years.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

He is survived by an uncle, Clarence LaVille of Marshalltown; three sisters, Beverly Brown and her husband, Wayne, of Mason City, Ethel Edworthy and her husband, Allan, of Caldwell, Texas, and Beatrice Galvin of Williams, Calif.; special friend of 33 years, Shirley Bilstad of Mason City; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends at the Senior Citizens Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

HARLEY J. KENWOOD

MASON CITY - Harley John Kenward, 49, of 777 So. Eisenhower Ave., died Sunday (July 23, 2000) at his home from complications of Parkinson's Disease.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Iowa National Guard 1133rd Transportation Co.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the Harley Kenward Memorial Fund.

Harley was born Aug. 23, 1950, the son of George J. and Verdie (Reynolds) Kenward in Mason City. He attended the Mason City Public School system and later graduated with the Class of 1968. Following high school, Harley joined the United States Navy in which he was stationed on the USS Saratoga. Following his tour in the Navy, Harley joined the Iowa National Guard 1133rd Transportation Co. in which he was a member for over 20 years.

On Aug. 11, 1973, Harley was united in marriage to Cheryl Marsh at Temple Baptist Church in Mason City. To this marriage were born two daughters, Holly and Kelly.

Harley was very active on the political scene, being involved in the poll registration, the elections and going to council meetings. He was the first president of the local union at Holnam.

Harley enjoyed watching sports on TV, going to movies, collecting coins, and spending time with his sisters. He was a member of the Mohawk Booster Club, and Temple Baptist Church.

Those thankful for having shared in Harley's life include his two daughters, Holly Kenward of Cedar Rapids, and Kelly Kenward of Mason City; four sisters, Joyce and her husband, Dennis Larson, of Mason City, Velma Reynolds of Mason City, Carmen Ackerman of Mason City, and Karen and her husband, Charles Kuhl, of El Reno, Okla., one brother, Roger and his wife, Mary Kenward, of Newburgh, Ind., and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Mr. Kenward was preceded in death by his parents, George and Verdie Kenward; an infant brother, Robert; and two brothers- in-law, Alan and Hank.

MURIEL G. BRUNSEN

BRITT - Muriel Gladys Brunsen, 77, of Bentonville, Ark., formerly of the Britt area, died Monday (July 24, 2000) at her home.

She was born Nov. 3, 1922, the daughter of Harry and Ellen Phillips Bird in Woden. She worked for 10 years with the Milk Plant, 11 years with Winnebago Industries and five years with Wal-Mart Stores in Bentonville, Ark.

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Rogers, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert Brunse, of the home, whom she married on Dec. 24, 1940; four sons, Larry Brunsen and special friend, Suz, of Remson, James and Sandra Brunsen of Britt, Dale and Ruth Brunsen of Algona, and Richard and Darla Brunsen of Algona; two daughters, Donna Banta and special friend, Warren Wood, of Garner, and Sandra Brunsen of Bentonville, Ark.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Arkansas funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Rollins Funeral Chapel with the Rev. H. L. Bernthal officiating.

Iowa Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt. Burial will follow at the Bingham Township Cemetery in Woden.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt.

HARVEY F. GABEL

ROCKFORD - Harvey F. Gabel, 94, formerly of rural Rockford, died Tuesday (July 25, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Roseville with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Interment will be at 1:15 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 3 until 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, and again one hour prior to services at St. Mary's School. A parish rosary will be recited by Fran Schmitt at 3:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, followed by a parish wake service led by Monsignor Brunkan at 7 p.m.

Harvey was born on Sept. 16, 1905, one of six children of Frederick and Margaret L. (Noss) Gabel. He was born in Ulster Township, rural Rockford. He attended rural school in Ulster Township.

Harvey then engaged in farming and was very active even after he said he was retired. He served on the elevator board in Marble Rock and was on the Parish Council at St. Mary's, of which he was a member.

Harvey was united in marriage to Gertrude Jane Allen on February 14, 1931. She preceded him in death in December of 1953. He then was united in marriage to Celeste Mary Havey Harlis on June 30, 1956, and this marriage lasted until her death in August of 1988.

Harvey was a former member of the Moose and the Elks lodges. If someone had a need for Harvey's skills in plumbing and electrical work, he was always willing to help. When he built one of his homes he did the work and in his other home he redid all the plumbing and electrical work.

Harvey was also talented in mechanical work and did anything he could on his machinery and cars. He also loved to dance and could be found dancing at his clubs and at the Surf and Turp ballrooms. He enjoyed traveling to Canada several times a year to fish with his wife.

Those thankful for sharing Harvey's life include his son, Richard, and his wife, Phyllis Gabel, of Rockford; eight grandchildren, Karen, Bernice, Benita, Bruce, Harvey, Jeff, Rick and Marnie; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Ruth Duncan, of Charles City; and one brother, Oscar Gabel, of Rockford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Gertrude and Celeste; his daughter, Marilyn Wills; and three brothers, Wilbur, Edgar "Ted" and Carl Gabel.

CEDAR FALLS - Linda Darlene Eischen, 51, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday (July 25, 2000) at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Algona.

PAUL 'JAKE' JACOBSEN

GAUTIER, Miss. - Paul Lee "Jake" Jacobsen, 47, formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (July 23, 2000) at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the O'Bryant-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Gautier. There will be no visitation.

Paul Lee "Jake" Jacobsen was born in Mason City on March 22, 1953. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1992 as a technical sergeant after 20 years of service, making his home in Gautier, Miss. He retired from Morton Industries as a supervisor.

He is survived by his wife, Jodie Jacobsen, of Gautier; two sons, Michael and Jeremy Jacobsen, and one stepson, Steven Raney, all of Gautier; two stepdaughters, Elsa Schmidt of Dallas, Texas, and Jessica Perry Slidell of Louisiana; his mother and stepfather, Mary and Hap Halberstadt of Ventura, Iowa; two brothers, Tom (Liz) Jacobsen of Naperville, Ill., and Stephen (Bonnie) Jacobsen of Champlin, Minn.; one sister, Judy (Jim) Budwig, of Colwell; and two stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Delmar M. Jacobsen.

MARIAN A. BERRY

MODESTO, Calif. - Marian A. Berry, 75, an educator with Jefferson Parish public schools, died July 15, 2000, of heart failure at Casa de Modesto Convalescent Hospital in Modesto.

Mrs. Berry was born in Mason City. She lived in Jefferson Parish for many years and in Modesto for the past five years. She had been an educator, language teacher and guidance counselor in the Jefferson School system for 35 years when she retired in 1992.

Survivors include three sons, John Charles Pfeffer of Modesto, William Joseph Pfeffer of Carrollton, Texas, and Michael David Pfeffer of North Liberty; a daughter, Carol Kristen O'Neill of Toddville; a brother, Albert Truman of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Janet Gilchrist of Laconia, N.H.; and nine grandchildren.

There will be no services.

CLAIR CANNY

LAKE MILLS - Funeral services for Clair Canny will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with the Rev. Sara Beth Akre officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation was held Friday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home and will be held one hour prior to services today at the church.

Clair Russell Canny, son of Clarus and Eunice (Pacey) Canny, was born March 22, 1934, in Mitchell County.

He graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1953.

He began working for the Osage Cooperative elevator shortly after graduating and continued working as manager of grain elevators until retiring in 1995.

On Aug. 1, 1954, Clair was united in marriage to Janice Julius.

He enjoyed golfing, working with stained glass, wintering in Texas and spending time with his family.

Clair passed away Thursday (July 27, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, following a battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Canny, of Lake Mills; three sons, Steve Canny and his friend, Carolyn Hope, of Cherokee, Mark Canny and his wife, Tammy, of Austin, Minn., and Lynn Canny and his wife, Deb, of Lake Mills; two daughters, Lorie Wilson and her husband, Roy, of Rockford, and Becky Sanford, of Rochester, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his mother, Eunice; two brothers; and two sisters.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clarus; and his daughter, Lynette Hollatz, who died July 31, 1991.

CHARLES CITY - Elenore R. Jensen, 85, formerly of 105 19th Ave, and Nashua and Waterloo, died Wednesday (July 26, 2000) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Sarah Rohret-Odoom, pastor of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. AGNES HALL

FOREST CITY -Agnes Hall, 93, of Sheffield, formerly of Forest City, died Friday (July 28, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Forest City with the Rev. Michelle Simonson officiating. Burial will be in Pilot Knob Lutheran Cemetery, rural Forest City.

Agnes Hall was born in Ellington Township, Hancock County, on June 15, 1907, the daughter of Lewis and Julia (Severson) Groath. She was baptized and confirmed at Pilot Knob Lutheran Church and attended rural school at Ellington No. 1.
She married Melvin Hall in Fertile, on March 7, 1934. The couple made their home in Forest City their entire married lives. Agnes helped out in the homes of many Forest City families. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and active in Circle there. She enjoyed the Do-Day Activities at the church and loved to crochet and quilt. Melvin passed away on Nov. 13, 1991. She made her home at Town Square Apartments in Forest City for many years. On Aug. 26, 1998, she entered the Sheffield Care Center.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Don and Sheryl Hall, of Sheffield; a grandson and his wife, Daryl and Cindy Hall, of Cedar Falls, and their two sons, Jake and Nick.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Sherman Groath and two sisters, Loretta Thovson and Myrtle Langerud.

VERLE C. HERMAN

GLENVILLE, Minn. -Funeral services for Verle C. Herman of Glenville, Minn., will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Glenville with the Rev. Harold Petersen officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glenville.

Verle C. Herman died Friday (July 28, 2000) at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn. He was 78 years old.
Verle was born Aug. 1, 1921, in Freeborn County, the son of Ross and Alice (Seuser) Herman. He was a graduate of Northwood High School in 1941 and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. He was a resident of Freeborn County most of his life. He contracted polio at a young age and spent nine months at the Sister Kinney Institute in Minneapolis.
He was united in marriage to Leona Matthies on Oct. 29, 1943, at First Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, Minn. He was employed by the Queen Stove Company for 13 years as a drafting engineer, and retired from the Streeter Company in 1972 following a heart attack. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Glenville, for many years. He was a member of the Elks for 22 years, and an associate member of the American Legion Club in Glenville. He served as mayor of Glenville for six years and was on the school board for six years. He helped in the process of building the new high school in Glenville. In his free time he enjoyed gardening, camping, cribbage, cooking and driving his scooter. Some of his best memories were spent with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Leona, of Glenville; children, Karin Nelson, of Albert Lea, Minn., Richard and his wife, Jeanne Herman, of Glenville, David Herman of Glenville, Phillip Herman and his special friend, Linda Marker, of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, Shari Nelson, Jackie and her husband, Brian Otterson, Krista and Lisa Herman, and Randy Harmdierks; great-grandchildren, Brandon Burnett, Cody and Brooke Otterson; sisters, Mary Jaspers of Northwood and Bonnie and her husband, Truman Hengesteg, of Northwood; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Merle Herman, brothers-in-law, Lee Jaspers and Dean Sandberg, sisters-in-law, Mildred (Charles) Lucas and LuLu (Berg) Epland.
In spite of his struggles, Verle enjoyed life. Blessed by his memory. He will be sadly missed.

NELLIE A. PONTONE

MASON CITY - Nellie A. Pontone, 92, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Saturday (July 29, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.
There will be no services. The body was cremated and burial will take place in the Gate of Heaven, Silver Springs, Md. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Nellie A. Pontone was born Jan. 11, 1908, in Hankinson, N.D., the daughter of Frederick O. and Alice Mae (Watson) Lyman. Following the death of her mother she and her two sisters moved to be with family in Mason City. She attended Mason City schools and graduated from Hamilton Business School. Following graduation she moved to Chicago, Ill., where she met Daniel J. Pontone.
She was united in marriage to Daniel J. Pontone on July 9, 1927, during a ceremony in Chicago, Ill. They made their home in Maryland. She worked during World War II as a secretary with Inter American Affairs. Following the war she worked as a secretary at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. She recently returned to Mason City to be closer to her family. She enjoyed playing golf and she was a self-taught painter.
Those left to cherish her memory include her brother, Frederick Lyman and his wife, Julie, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sisters, Ruby Christianson and Stella Conkey.

MASON CITY -Frances B. Becker, 91, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Thursday (July 27, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Frances B. Becker was born Aug. 9, 1909, in Vinton, the daughter of Allen W. and Minnie (Buecking) Neumann. Her family later moved to Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School.
On June 2, 1962, she was married to Paul P Becker during a ceremony in Cedar Rapids. She worked for many years at Mier Wolf. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and gardening.
Those left to cherish her memory include a sister, Anita Robertson, Cedar Rapids; a brother-in-law, Harold Prindle, of Mason City; nephews, Jim Prindle and wife, Kathleen, of Mason City and Ron Robertson, of Cedar Rapids; and one niece, Judy Robinson and husband, Duane "Duey", of Anchorage, Alaska.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Fern H. Prindle, and two brothers, Allen and Orville Neumann.
