VERNON DALE DICKEY

OSAGE - Vernon Dale Dickey, 72, died Saturday (July 22, 2000) at the Hospice at Osage Memorial Hospital after a nine-year fight with cancer. His attitude and brave composure belied the seriousness of the disease during all of these years of treatment.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christian Missionary and Alliance Church, 726 State St., Osage, with the Rev. Rick Magstadt officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Military rites at the grave will be conducted by the Osage American Legion Post No. 278.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Champion Funeral Home, Osage. There will be no relatives present.

Any memorials may be addressed to the Osage Hospital Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Vernon was born Dec. 18, 1927, to Richard Dickey and Vera Livens Dickey at rural Boscobel, Wis. He married Joan Fritz in 1951 in Wisconsin.

He served our country in the U. S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Osage American Legion and the Osage V.F.W.

Vernon was a lineman for 37 years with Bell Telephone. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He treasured his many hours of gardening, freely sharing his bounty. He worked several years for Mitchell County Conservation, mowing parks. He donated his time on weekends planting more than 100 trees in the parks.

Vernon leaves behind to join him in Heaven, his wife, Joan; his son, William Dale Dickey; his brother, Harold and his wife, Marilyn, of Ottumwa; his sister, Dorothy Dickey Thompson of Madison, Wis.; his brother, Don of Bagley, Wis.; his sister, Trudy Dickey Nechkash and her husband, Lavern, of Madison Wis.; and his sister, Linda Dickey Cutler and her husband, Stanley, of Linden, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Lavern, on July 19, 1956; a brother-in-law, Paul Thompson; his sons, Robbin and Doug of Madison Wis.; and a sister-in-law, Karen Fritz Petrick of Fennimore, Wis.

CAROLYN (MRS. KENNETH) HECKMAN

CHARLES CITY - Carolyn (Mrs. Kenneth) Heckman, 87, of 103 Ferguson St., died Thursday (July 20, 2000) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main Street, Charles City, with the Rev. Jack Ivey, pastor of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Charles City, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hauser Funeral Home where the family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

LESTER L. SMITH

GENOA, Wis. - Lester L. Smith, 59, died Thursday (July 20, 2000) at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at New Hope United Methodist Church, Highway 82, Red Mound, Wis., with the Rev. Marlene Lake-Genry officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Genoa, Wis.

Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse, Wis., and from 10 a.m. until the time of the services at the church Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Lester was born on Feb. 23, 1941, to Howard and Ednabelle (Harms) Smith in Mason City.

He married Sharon Moline on Aug. 18, 1962, in Lansing, Iowa. Les had taught high school math in DeSoto, Wis., and Urbandale, Iowa, for many years.

Besides being a beloved teacher and storyteller, Les enjoyed gardening and fishing. He loved to play the piano and people loved to listen to him play. He was also a member of the Genoa Lion's Club.

Les is survived by his wife, Sharon; a daughter, Nicole of Des Moines; his mother, Ednabelle of Sheffield; a sister, Patricia (Bill) Melton of Vienna, Va.; and a niece, Karen Fox, of Washington, D.C.

He was preceded in death by his father.

ZELLA ANDERSON

EAGLE GROVE - Zella Anderson, 74, died Friday (July 21, 2000) at USA Health Care in Dows.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with the Pastor Paul Rothfusz officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Willim Funeral Home in Eagle Grove.

Zella Elizabeth Anderson was born on April 3, 1926, at Des Moines to Ora and Mertle Jared. She grew up and attended school in Des Moines. She later moved to Fort Dodge where she worked as a housekeeper.

On Nov. 2, 1958, she was united in marriage to Paul R. Anderson in Fort Dodge. Following her marriage, she moved to Eagle Grove.

She was a member of Samuel Lutheran Church and First Assembly of God Church, both in Eagle Grove.

Zella is survived by her two daughters, Ginger and her husband, Tom Trulson, of Britt, and Teresa Anderson of Eagle Grove; five grandchildren, Joshua, Chris, Rachel, Becky and Michael Trulson; two sisters, Lucille Foah and Helen Rowbal, both of Des Moines; and other relatives and friends.

Zella was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Orville Jared; and two sisters, Alice Jared and Pauline Hammer.

ZELLA KIELMAN

GREENE - Funeral services for Zella Kielman, 95, formerly of 502 West Traer St., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene, with Pastor Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene and will continue one hour before services at the church Tuesday.

Zella Elizabeth Marie Maass was born Dec. 7, 1904, in Washington, a daughter of Henry A. and Katie (Folkers) Maass, and died Friday (July 21, 2000) at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville.

She was baptized Jan. 22, 1905, and at an early age the family moved to the Greene area where she was confirmed on Aug. 16, 1925, at St. Peter Lutheran Church. She attended rural school No. 9 and later attended the Greene High School graduating in 1922. As a young lady she taught in the Coldwater No. 8 country school and later in the rural schools near Allison.

On Jan. 3, 1932, Zella was united in marriage to Bernard "Ben" Kielman in Webster, S. D. They farmed on an acreage near Bristow for three and a half years and then farmed in the Greene and Clarksville areas for more than 40 years before retiring in 1979 and moving into Greene.

After Mr. Kielman's death on Oct. 23, 1992, Zella continued to live in Greene until entering the nursing home in March 1996.

Those thankful for sharing Zella's life are her daughter, Willa Joyce and her husband, Edward Schmadeke, of Shell Rock; three grandchildren, Mrs. Lee (Jenice) Engel, Greg Schmadeke and Mrs. Lance (Tamara) Brown; eight great-grandchildren, Jennifer Engel, Alisha Tellinghuisen, Amanda Kampman, LeeAnn, Laura and Jeremy Engel, Landon and Dustin Brown; one step-great-granddaughter, Marj Schafer; and one brother, Henry Maass of Cedar Rapids.

Zella was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ben; a sister, Laura Jenny; and a brother, Hilton Maass.

ROCKFORD - Edward "Ed" E. Burke, 68, of 107 Second St. S.W., died Saturday (July 22, 2000) at Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

KAREN L. SHILL

MASON CITY - Karen L. Shill, 62, of 301 S. Rhode Island, died Thursday (July 20, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at St. James Lutheran Church. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Karen was born July 4, 1938, in Mason City, the daughter of Orville and Wanda (Phillips) Daniels. Karen graduated from Mason City High School then married Charles H. Shill Dec. 8, 1957, in Mason City.

Karen and Chuck owned and operated Shill's Maid-Rite for 30 years retiring in 1996.

Karen was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

She is survived by her husband, Charles H. Shill, Mason City; three sons, Scott Shill and his wife, Rachelle, Eau Claire, Wis., Tim Shill and his wife, Char, Nome, Alaska, and James Shill, Mason City; a daughter, Carla Quail and her husband, Mark, Spencer; eight grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan, Logan, Dustin, Christopher, Tyler, Amy and Liana; a sister, Judy Bonderson and her husband, Bernard, Ely, Minn.; and a brother, Charles K. "Pete" Daniels and his wife, Sue, Galesburg, Ill.

DOROTHY M. WARNER

MASON CITY - Dorothy M. Warner, 87, of 934 N. Jackson, died Thursday (July 20, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, 125 E. State, Mason City, with the Rev. Ron Stein officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Dorothy M. Warner was born Nov. 10, 1912, in Mason City, the daughter of Clarence and Frances (Fanny) (Johnson) Boyer. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1930.

She married William E. Harrington. He died one year later. On March 21, 1936, she was united in marriage to Howard J. Warner. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary shortly before his death in 1986.

Dorothy worked for the family businesses, Boyer Grocery, Boyer Hardware and Formalities. She retired in 1972.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and the church circles, a former member of Women of the Moose. She enjoyed coin collecting as well as collecting miniature water pitchers and bowls.

Dorothy is survived by a son, David H. Warner and his wife, Dorothy, Des Moines; six grandchildren, Laura, Karen, Denise, Brenda, Jamie and Larry; two step-granddaughters; six great-grandchildren, JR, Jessie, Nicole, Staley, Tami and Callie; four great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Ethel Harrington, Fallon, Nev.; a sister-in-law, Gladys Janssen, Trent, S. D.; and many other family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a son, Richard Harrington; sisters, Elsie Fisher and Winifred Paul; and brothers, Eldon Boyer and Cecil Boyer.

ED (EDDIE) THEESFELD

MASON CITY - Ed (Eddie)Theesfeld, 72, of 1111 N. Jefferson, died Tuesday (July 18, 2000) while on a fishing trip at Snow Shoe Falls, Red Lake, Ontario, Canada.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Scott G. Holmes officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and at the church one hour prior to the service Monday.

Ed was born May 31, 1928, in Mason City, the son of Etta Theesfeld and was raised by his grandparents, Ora and Nellie Theesfeld. He attended Mason City schools.

Ed served in the Merchant Marines and the U. S. Army during War World II and the occupation of Japan.

He was married to Betty G. Kramer on Aug. 17, 1948, in Los Angeles.

Ed worked as a self-employed carpet layer and contracted out working for Wilcox Furniture in Clear Lake for 40 years and worked with Roger Cline for 15 years. He retired in 1989.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, watching his grandchildren's sporting events and teaching his grandchildren to fish. He was also a Minnesota Vikings fan. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and the V.F.W.

Ed is survived by his wife, Betty G. Theesfeld, Mason City; three daughters, Kristie Brockmeyer and her husband, Paul, Sheffield, Julie Johnson and her husband, Vern, Bloomington, Minn., and Tracie Johnson and her husband, John, Andover, Minn.; grandchildren, Amber and Eric Brockmeyer, Sheffield, Christopher and Sara Johnson, Bloomington, Minn., and Nicholas and Jordan Johnson, Andover, Minn.; a great-grandson, Jacob Johnson, Bloomington, Minn.; a sister, Tillie Nelson, Rosemount, Minn.; a half-brother, Ralph Leigh and his wife, Betty, Maringo, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Etta Leigh and her husband, LeRoy; sisters, Grace Westendorf and Bernice Witte; and grandparents, Ora and Nellie Theesfeld.

ANGOLA, Ind. -Floyd B. Lyke, 89, died Friday (July 21, 2000) at Cameron Hospital, Angola, Ind.

GARY DONALD FREIN

WEBSTER CITY - Gary Donald Frein, 54, died Friday (July 21, 2000) at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, Iowa City, of complications from staph infection.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Webster City with Father Jack Flaherty officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Story City Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m. and a wake service at 4 p.m. at Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home in Story City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church in Webster City Monday.

Gary was born Jan. 8, 1946, in Garner, the son of Donald Edward and Dorothy (Rayhons) Frein.

Gary lived in Webster City since 1992 and in Stratford and before that in rural Forest City. He was a farmer and had worked for the City of Webster City.

He married Joyce Banner on June 18, 1994.

He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Webster City.

Gary is survived by his wife, Joyce Frein of Webster City; three daughters, Sheila Baldwin of Iowa City, Amy Frein of Algona and Kris Frein of Garner; his mother, Dorothy Frein of Forest City; three brothers, Thomas Frein of Plainsboro, N.J., James Frein of Mason City and Donald Frein of Farmington, Minn.; and a sister, Kathy Matson of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his father and a niece, Linda Frein.

GRAFTON - John "Jack" White, 86, died Sunday (July 23, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

WILLIAM ERNEST MUHLSTEIN

ALTOONA - William Earnest Muhlstein, 52, of 1031 Sixth St. N.W., died Saturday (July 22, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lutheran Church of the Cross, Altoona. Burial of cremains will be at a later date at The Garden of Memories in Waterloo.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. for the family. Other visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today with the family present at the Altoona Funeral Home, 105 Fourth St. S.W.

William was born in Mason City on March 10, 1948, the son of William and Juanita (Winter) Muhlstein. He attended Mason City schools and served in the Vietnam Conflict where he received the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service.

Bill later lived in Waterloo where he met and married Jerry Holmes on May 13, 1978. For the past eight years they have made their home in Altoona, where Bill worked for Champion Crane as a heavy equipment operator.

Bill was a member of Lutheran Church of the Cross and Local Union 234 of the Operating Engineers. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

Left to cherish is memory are his wife, Jerry Muhlstein, Altoona; a daughter, Lisa Kimball, Hazelton; three sons, Tim Muhlstein, Forest City, Todd Muhlstein, Toledo, and Tony Muhlstein, Darlington, Wis.; three sisters, Colleen Olson, Mason City, Arlene Gallion, Manly, and Theresa Werstein, Kensett; and eight grandchildren.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

Ed was born on March 2, 1932, in Mason City. For the next 10 years his maternal grandparents, William and Lena Fisher, raised him. He attended school at Nora Springs, Rudd and then Rockford.

He farmed with his family and then was employed at the Rockford Brick and Tile. For the next 29 years, he worked for Shield Bantam in Waverly, retiring in 1994.

On Jan. 20, 1951, Ed was united in marriage to Maxine Myers at the Methodist Personage at Caledonia, Minn. To this union were born seven children.

Ed enjoyed his family fishing trips to Lake Michigan for salmon and fishing area lakes in Iowa. He also spent time sharpening his fishing skills by reading fishing magazines and watching fishing shows. His favorite times were spent with his grandchildren.

Those thankful in sharing Ed's life include his wife of 49 years, Maxine, Rockford; three daughters, Marilou and her husband, Don Dormeier, Fort Wayne, Ind., Ellen Weide, Hampton, and Kristi Mason, Rockford; four sons, Steven Burke, Des Moines, Ervin and his wife, Jane Burke, Ottumwa, Michael and his wife, Mary Burke, Harlan, and Robert and his wife, Michelle Burke, Rochester, Minn.; and 12 grandchildren, Anne and Katie Dormeier, Jill, Jodi, Jenna and Todd Burke, Garry, Erin and Bridgette Weide, Paul Burke, Lindsay and Chelsea Mason.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

HENRY JOHN SMID

CONCORD, Calif.- Henry John Smid, 87, formerly of Klemme, died May 7, 2000, at Everett, Wash.

A memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church in Concord, Calif. Graveside services were conducted at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Concord.

Bryant & Moore Funeral Chapel, Concord, Calif., was in charge of the arrangements.

Henry was born May 24, 1913, to Udo Smid and Elizabeth Johnson Smid.

Henry lived in Concord, Calif., until he moved to Arlington, Wash., due to ill health 10 months before his death. He was a custodian at First Presbyterian Church in Concord until his retirement. He belonged to the Diablo Valley Masonic Lodge 448 and was active in his church. He enjoyed coming back to Iowa and visiting with friends and relatives.

He is survived by three children, Janet Short of San Antonio, Texas, Carol Renwald of Yuba City and David Smid of Arlington, Wash.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four nephews, Donald Schaefer of Bettendorf, Elwyn Schaefer of Guttenberg, and Harvey and Roger Schaefer of Forest City.
