CARL DREHER

MASON CITY - Carl Dreher, 96, of 1704 S. Pennsylvania Ave., died Wednesday (April 19, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 24, 2000, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. Bill Poland of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at Fullerton Funeral Home.

ORVAL BOWMAN

FOREST CITY - Orval Bowman, 85, of Forest City, died Wednesday (April 19, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Leland, with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Leland.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City.

Orval Bowman was born in Leland, on Nov. 23, 1914, the son of Frances W. and Inga Christina (Langfald) Bowman. He was baptized and confirmed in Our Saviors Lutheran Church, where he has been a lifetime member.

He graduated from Leland High School in 1932 and from Waldorf College in 1934 with a degree in education. He taught in country schools for six years.

On Oct. 12, 1940, Orval married Elvina Anna Myre at the Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in Forest City. In 1943 he joined the Armed Forces and received his basic training at Camp Roberts, Calif. He was in General McArthur's headquarters in Australia, the Philippines and other islands as a guard, dispatch clerk and truck driver before receiving his honorable discharge on Nov. 29, 1945.

Orval and Elvina lived on a farm east of Leland for more than 45 years. He loved the outdoors and farming. He enjoyed going on picnics and Sunday afternoon drives. He was an avid reader.

He is survived by his wife, Elvina, of Forest City; and his children, Patricia and husband, Ron Johnson, of Bemidji, Minn., Marcia and husband, Jon Hillesland, of Leland, David Bowman and wife, Elizabeth, of Ames, James Bowman and wife, Nancy, of Forest City; grandchildren, Ron Jr. and wife, Cherlyn, Rod, Randy and Michael Johnson, Rob and wife, Roxanne, Kent and Kandyce Hillesland, Judd Bowman, Lindsay and Amy Bowman; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Charlotte Baumann, of Des Moines.

Orval was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Vernard and Arthur Bowman; and a son-in-law, Jimmy Van Lenning.

EVA (MADSON) MARTINSON

EMMONS, Minn. - Eva (Madson) Martinson, 92, of Emmons, Minn., died Wednesday (April 19, 2000) at the Thronecrest Retirement Center in Albert Lea, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, with the Rev. Scott Duffus and the Rev. Terje Hausken, officiating. Burial will be at Lime Creek Cemetery in rural Emmons, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills.

Eva Adeline Martinson was born Aug. 23, 1907, in Oslo, Norway (formerly known as Kristiania). She was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Norway. She was the first born child to her parents, Thomas Sandal and Dagny Jonette Fredrekka Anderson. Her father immigrated to America first and Eva and her mother joined him later. Eva celebrated her first birthday on the boat. They landed at New York City and settled near Scarville.

She was confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills in June of 1923. Eva graduated from Scarville High School and attended Waldorf College. The family moved to Seattle, Wash., in 1926.

Eva married Clarence A. Madson, from Emmons, in Seattle on Oct. 30, 1927. They returned to the Emmons area that same year, where she lived the rest of her life. Clarence passed away on April 18, 1973.

Eva was a homemaker and enjoyed baking Norwegian goodies for her family and friends when they would stop for coffee. She also enjoyed playing the piano and singing. Eva was also very active in church and community affairs in Emmons. She named Gateway Park.

In June of 1977, Eva married Marvin H. Martinson, of Lake Mills. Marvin passed away on May 29, 1999.

Eva was a lifelong member of Emmons Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and Rachel Circle. She was active in the Civic Improvement Club and a member of the Sons of Norway.

She is survived by her sons, Howard (Carol) Madson, of Barron, Wis., Duane (Henrietta) Madson, of Rochester, Minn., Robert (Dorothy) Madson, of White Bear Lake, Minn., Charles (Judy) Madson, of Clear Lake and Gary (Kate) Madson, of Long Lake, Minn.; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; along with a sister, Mae McLean, of Snoqualmie, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Arnie and Ralph; sister, Ruth Olson; and grandson, David Jon Madson.

MARILYN HOHENSTEIN

MASON CITY - Marilyn Hohenstein, 47, of 1046 E. State St., died Tuesday (April 18, 2000) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John L. "Jack" Gannett officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Marilyn Hohenstein Memorial Fund.

Marilyn was born Jan. 22, 1953, the daughter of Lloyd and Florence (Leuthard) Jones in Mankato, Minn. Marilyn graduated from Windom High School in 1971, attended Mankato State University and Stewarts Beauty College in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Marilyn married Reed Hohenstein on May 7, 1983, in Lakefield, Minn. The Hohensteins moved to Mason City in 1987.

Marilyn was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, enjoyed horseback riding, swimming, gardening, going for walks and reading.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Reed, of Mason City; two daughters, Amber Scholl and her husband, Ryan, of Mason City and Audrey at home; parents, Lloyd and Florence M. Jones, of Windom, Minn.; brother, Delano Jones and his wife, Diane, of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; mother-in-law, Eunice Hohenstein, of Lakefield, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Mike Hohenstein and his wife, Val, of Akron and Clark Hohenstein, of Lakefield, Minn.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Wally Hohenstein; and one brother, Dr. Paul Jones.

MAX Y. HEDRICK

CEDAR RAPIDS - Max Y. Hedrick, 86, a resident of Manor Care, died there on Wednesday (April 19, 2000) after a long illness of Alzheimer's.

A tree planting memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 1, 2000, at East Park in Mason City, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore officiating.

Max was born on Oct. 13, 1913, in Indianola and raised in Ames, the son of Lloyd and Helen Fern Yale Hedrick. He graduated from Iowa State College in 1937.

He married L. Ava Williams on June 18, 1941, in Milford. Max was the co-owner of Hedrick Brothers Office Supply for 37 years, retiring in 1975.

He served in the Navy at Pearl Harbor during World War II.

He was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ames, Cedar Rapids and Mason City, where he was an elder, deacon and sang in the choirs. He had been a student elder at the Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames.

He was a charter member of the Men's Garden Club of North Iowa, and the River City Barber Shop Chorus in Mason City.

Survivors include his wife, Ava; a daughter, Jean Anderson and her husband, Paul, of Cedar Rapids and their children, Derek Anderson and his wife, Kari, Clint and Carrie Anderson; two sons, Kent and his wife, Patty, of Diamond Bar, Calif., and their children, Pam and Barbara Hedrick and their granddaughter, Macie Hedrick, Neil and his wife, Mary, of Hampton and their children, Shawn, Erinn and Kelsey Hedrick.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Vincent.

GEORGIA M. RICKETTS

BRITT- Georgia M. Ricketts, 92, of Britt, formerly of Fort Dodge, passed away Tuesday (April 18, 2000) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, with Pastor Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Corpus Christi Cemetery in Fort Dodge.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church. There will be a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt.

Georgia, the daughter of George S. and Beatrice McGough Fallon, was born Dec. 29, 1907, in Vincent. She attended country school northwest of Vincent and later Saint Angela Academy in Carroll.

At the age of 18, she moved back to Vincent and worked at the local creamery until her marriage. Georgia was united in marriage with Chet Ricketts on Feb. 16, 1931, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Fort Dodge.

The couple farmed southwest of Vincent for a number of years. Georgia was also employed by Morton Frozen Foods in Webster City for five years. In 1962, following the death of her husband, she moved to Fort Dodge to be near her family. In 1991, she moved to Britt to be near her daughter and family.

Georgia was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt.

Georgia is survived by one daughter, Rickee Ewing and her husband, Roger, of Britt and their children, Dr. Christopher Ewing and his wife, Dr. Dawn Ewing, of Baltimore, Md. and Michael Ewing, of Britt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chet; a sister, Heloise Heesch; and a brother, Fay Fallon.

DOROTHY E. VANDYKE

GREENE - Funeral services for Dorothy E. VanDyke, 79, of 316 N. Fifth St. in Greene, will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, with Pastor Gene Burry officiating. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene.

Dorothy Elaine Bell was born Oct. 12, 1920, in Waverly, a daughter of Arthur L. and Alice (Jennings) Bell and died Thursday (April 20, 2000) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

She received her education in the Allison Public Schools. While attending high school and following graduation, she worked as a secretary for Carroll Wild Law Office in Allison. She later worked as a secretary at the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls.

On May 12, 1943, she was united in marriage to Roy H. VanDyke in Missouri. Following his discharge from the service they made their home in the Waterloo area. Roy died June 21, 1987, and shortly thereafter she made her home in Greene.

Dorothy's interests included collecting antiques, refinishing furniture and needle work. She enjoyed her pets. She was a member of the Greene Historical Society.

Living family members include her sister, Betty and her husband, Bud Baldwin, of Waterloo; six nephews, Dennis Baldwin, of Waterloo, Mark Baldwin, of Longville, Minn., Dean Baldwin, of Waterloo, Tom Bell, of Greene, Steve Bell, of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Max Bell, of Prescott, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Bette Bell, of Clarkdale, Ariz. and Irene VanDyke, of Hillsborough, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, John Bell.

CARL W. DREHER

MASON CITY - Carl W. Dreher, 96, of 1704 S. Pennsylvania Ave., died Wednesday afternoon (April 19, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 24, 2000 at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. Bill Poland, of Wesley United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the Fullerton Funeral Home.

Carl was born on April 20, 1903, one of six children of Reinhold and Rose (Scheffel) Dreher at Nora Springs. His early education was in Nora Springs and later Wisconsin.

He lived in Nora Springs and Mason City most of his life. Carl was united in marriage to Lola Tietgen in June of 1931.

He was a life member of Mason City Elks Lodge No. 375. He owned and operated Dreher Novelty Company for over 50 years.

Carl is survived by his three daughters, Delores Dreher, of Manly, Shirley Schintgen and Joan Dreher, both of Mason City; one grandson, Michael Schintgen, of Denver, Colo.; and one step-grandson, Daniel Schintgen, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1982, three sisters and two brothers.

DEAN BUBLITZ

GRAFTON - Dean Bublitz, 57, of rural Osage, died suddenly of an apparent heart attack on Thursday (April 20, 2000).

He was born Oct. 11, 1943 on the family farm in Worth County, the son of Harold and Lucille (Wahl) Bublitz. He was baptized and confirmed at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. In 1962, Dean was a member of the last class to graduate from Carpenter High School.

On June 29, 1979, Dean was united in marriage to Marilyn Anderson in Austin, Minn. He farmed in the Grafton and St. Ansgar areas.

After the death of his father, he continued the Evergreen Game Farm, where he raised and cared for llamas, buffalo, Canada geese and a black bear.

He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Interment will be in the Grafton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of rural Osage; a daughter, Kasey Petznick and her husband, Randy and their children, Samantha and James, of St. Ansgar; four sons, Keith Anderson, of Northwood, Jeff Bublitz and his wife, Lori and their children, Cody and Kari, of St. Ansgar, Leo Bublitz ,at home and Frederick Bublitz, at home; his mother, Lucille Bublitz, of St. Ansgar; a sister, Elaine Huebner and her husband, Kermit, of Grafton; two brothers, Dale Bublitz and his wife, Dorothy, of St. Ansgar and David Bublitz and his wife, Debbie, of Carpenter; a sister-in-law, Laurie Bublitz, of Grafton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

AGATHA MARIE (CHEHOCK) WILLEY

PLYMOUTH - Agatha Marie (Chehock) Willey, 103, formerly of the Plymouth area, died Wednesday (April 19, 2000) at the Life Care Center in Reno, Nev.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Plymouth, with the Rev. Deborah Stowers and the Rev. Richard Pippert, officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Plymouth.

Agatha Marie (Chehock) Willey went to join her heavenly family on April 19, 2000, at the age of 103. She was born Feb. 10, 1897 of pioneer parents, Albert Benjamin Chehock and Catherina Christina (Gottlieb) Chehock on a farm near Plymouth.

She graduated from from Plymouth High School and went on to attend Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, graduating with the class of 1917. Agatha taught school in a one-room country school followed by several years of teaching at Plymouth and Fertile.

She married Charles Carlton Willey of Mason City on March 11, 1922, in Charles City.

Agatha Willey is survived by daughters, Marvyl Bernice McQuatters, of Henderson, Nev., Marjy Marie Schmitt, of Paradise, Calif. and Marcele Mae Van Essen, of Reno, Nev.; grandchildren, David Schmitt, of Kennesaw, Ga., Dianne Mills, of Reno, Nev. Julia McQuatters Contreras, Moorpark, Calif., Corinne Van Essen, of Reno, Nev., Joseph Van Essen, of Canyon Country, Calif., Marcia Van Essen Bowman, of Ventura, Calif. and Michael Van Essen, of Palm Springs, Calif.; she was a great-grandmother of nine; and a great-great-grandmother of two.

She was preceded by her parents; her husband, Charles Willey, on Feb. 14, 1972; brothers, Leland Oris Chehock, Kenneth Willard Chehock, Virgil Gottlieb Chehock, as well as two grandsons, James Willey McQuatters and Edward Van Essen; and two nieces, Kathryn Chehock and Mariann Chehock.

DR. T. E. BLONG

STACYVILLE - Dr. T.E. Blong, 93, formerly of Stacyville, died Thursday (April 20, 2000) at St. Therese's Rehabilitation Center in New Hope, Minn.

He was born March 30, 1907 at St. Lucas, Iowa. Dr. T.E. Blong practiced medicine in Stacyville for 35 years.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Interment will be in Visitation Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville.

He is survived by his wife, Effie Blong, of DelRay Beach, Fla.; five children, Elaine Blake, of Houston, Texas, Ted Blong, of Woodbury, Minn., Carol Charbonneau, of Woodbury, Minn., Ruth Haggerty, of Edina, Minn. and John Blong, of Eldridge; one brother, Dr. Joe Blong, of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Betty Scheckle, of Phoenix, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Blong.

MARIE ANNA MALL

WICHITA, Kan. - Marie Anna Mall, 105, died Thursday (April 20, 2000) at the Medicalodge, Goddard, Kan.

She was born March 7, 1895 in Pocahontas, Mo. Marie was the daughter of the Rev. Henry Kumpf and his wife, Elizabeth.

She followed her parents to many states where her father was called to congregations. Her father taught at parochial schools in addition to preaching. When Marie was old enough she helped him with the teaching.

At the age of 21, Marie married the Rev. Oswald E. G. Mall. They served St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa, for 33 years and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Warren, Ill. for 13 years. Marie served as organist and choir director for most of that time. After retirement in 1961, the couple moved to Wichita, Kan.

She is survived by a son, Oswald "Ozzie", of Wichita, Kan., eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

Those who preceded her in death: her father, the Rev. Henry Kumpf; her mother, Elizabeth; her husband, the Rev. Oswald Mall; her sister, Lydia; five brothers, the Rev. Paul, the Rev. Ernst, the Rev. Henry, the Rev. Fred and the Rev. Christian Kumpf; and a son, the Rev. Carlton H. Mall.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Christ Lutheran Church, 5356 N. Hillside, Wichita, Kan.

CLEAR LAKE - Mrs. Genevieve Mae McGowan, 80, of 309 N. Sixth St., Clear Lake, died Friday (April 21, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her body was cremated. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

SHARON RAE SWANSON

JOICE - Memorial services for Sharon Rae Swanson, 58, of Joice, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Covenant Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Rich Murray officiating.

Sharon Rae, daughter of Edward and Gertrude Farley Niederfrank, was born May 19, 1941, in Sioux City, Iowa. At age five, her mother was united in marriage with Hugo Dammann. After living a short time in Aspinwall, Iowa, they moved to Manning, where Sharon attended school, graduating from Manning High School in 1959. Following graduation, Sharon moved to San Diego, Calif. Where she attended business college.

On Oct. 5, 1971, Sharon was united in marriage with Allan J. Swanson in Whittier, Calif. where they raised their two daughters, Kristine and Stacy. Sharon and Allan lived in California for nearly 25 years before moving to Joice, Iowa.

Sharon was a loving wife and mother. She was a member of First Covenant Church in Mason City and Auxillian of Gideon's International. She was a private pilot and also actively volunteered for Mercy Foundation in Mason City.

Her other activities and interests included being a beauty control consultant, sport fishing and decorating.

Sharon died as the result of an automobile accident near Evanston, Wyo. on Wednesday (April 19, 2000) at the age of 58 years and 11 months.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her mother-in-law, Jane Swanson.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Dr. Allan J. Swanson, of Joice; two daughters, Kristine Swanson, of Mentone, Calif. and Stacy and her husband, Jerry Moore, of Casper, Wyo.; two grandchildren, Chandler and Travis Moore, of Casper, Wyo.; mother and stepfather, Gertrude and Hugo "Shorty" Dammann, of Manning; father and stepmother, Edward and Fern Niederfrank, of San Diego, Calif.; sister, Dorthie "Dottie" and her husband, Bob Schiltz, of Manning; two brothers, Robbie Dammann and his wife, Cathy, of Manning and Rickie Dammann and his special friend, Sheryl Benson, of Manning; nieces and nephews, Joel Schiltz, KaDee Schiltz, Shelby Dammann, Caylee Dammann, Breana Dammann and Evan Dammann; father-in-law, John Swanson, of Overland, Kan.; two brothers-in-law, Robert and John Swanson; and other relatives and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be sent to Gideon's International.
