JACQUELINE LOUISE 'JACKIE' BURGESS

MASON CITY - Jacqueline Louise "Jackie" Burgess, 47, of 15 14th St. N.W., died Sunday (April 9, 2000) at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with Lieutenant Jon Augenstein and Brig. Ellis Bollwahn of the Salvation Army officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from noon until time of services on Friday at the funeral chapel.

Jackie was born Nov. 26, 1952, in Mason City, daughter of Roscoe Jr. and Margaret (Fisher) Burgess. She lived with her family in the North Iowa area all of her life. She graduated from Northwood Kensett High School and also attended college in Iowa City for one and one half years.

Jackie enjoyed doing many different types of crafts, which she was proud to share with her family and friends. She also enjoyed taking care of and spending as much time as possible with her family, especially her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

To share in the memory of Jackie is her mother, Margaret Burgess, of Mason City; three sisters, Roxann Burgess, Cindy Cunningham and her husband, Randy and Julie Burgess and Jimmie Stitts, all of Mason City; two brothers, Steve Burgess and his wife, Ann, of Des Moines and Jim Burgess and his special friend, Lisa Read, of Mason City; a close friend of the family, Ron Willis; a special friend in her heart, Allen LeBraye; six nieces and four nephews, Laura, Steven "Butch" (Jacquie), Keith (LeeAnn), all of Des Moines, Michelle (Allen), LaTeya, Dalaina, Levi, Syrita, Johnny, and Patricia, all of Mason City; four great-nieces and three great-nephews, Cheyenne, Dakota, Damian, Brooklyn, all of Des Moines, Jessmyn, Allen Jr. and Josephina, all of Mason City; a very special aunt and uncle, Jack and Delores Burgess, of Mason City; a god son, Bob Clute, of Clear Lake; three aunts, Betty (Spence) Steece and Lola (Martin) Boomgarden, of Mason City and JoAnn Anderson and her husband, Dan, of Clear Lake; and several cousins and friends.

Jackie was preceded in death by her father, Roscoe Burgess Jr.; an infant sister, Carol Ann; and uncles, Bob, Dale, Jerry and Lorenzo Burgess; and an aunt, June Eden.

FAIRFIELD - Elery B. 'Bert' Stiles, 89, formerly of Mason City, died Monday (April 10, 2000) at the Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Ronald Stein of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

MILDRED F. DEAN

MASON CITY - Mildred F. Dean, 82, of 825 Sixth St. S.W., died Monday (April 10, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland of the Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home and until time of services on Thursday.

Memorials may be given to the Mildred Dean Memorial Fund.

Mildred Frances Dean was born July 29, 1917, in Dubuque, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Peuker) Sodawasser. When she was nine years old, her family moved to Mason City, where she attended school.

Mildred was united in marriage with Lloyd E. Dean in Bethlehem, Mo. They made their home in Mason City.

Mildred was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed playing cards and reading. She also enjoyed going to rummage sales and socializing with her friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Connie Johnson, of Mason City, Judy Addison, of Galt, Calif. and Lucille Henning and her husband, Edward, of Mason City; 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son, Jerry; daughter, Jane; four sisters, Minnie, Violet, Frances and Anna; and one grandson, Christopher.

VIOLA T. SMITH

MASON CITY - Viola T. Smith, 98, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Monday (April 10, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Her body was donated to the University of Iowa. There will be a private family burial in the Meservey Cemetery at a later date.

Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Viola was born Jan. 11, 1902, in Meservey, the daughter of Ellsworth C. and Mary M. (Mayer) Thomas. Viola was a lifelong educator.

She began her teaching career in Meservey. She then moved to teach at an all boys school in Davenport. The majority of her professional years were spent at the Bretton Downs Elementary School in Grand Rapids, Mich., as a teacher and later as the school's principal.

Viola enjoyed traveling the United States and foreign countries. She was very active at the First Congregational Church of Mason City, where she was a member. She also enjoyed cooking and sharing time with family and friends.

Her survivors include her sister, Evelyn L. Oslund, of Mason City; several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Alva Bush and Duane Smith; two sisters, Thelma Nicholson and Lois Peters.

ELLEN C. FISH

FOREST CITY - Ellen C. Fish, 78, of Forest City, died Monday (April 10, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, with the Rev. Bill Robinson of the First Baptist Church of Forest City officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Friday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home.

Ellen C. Fish was born in Kansas City, Mo., on June 1, 1921, the daughter of James and Constance (Beamish) Stewart. She received her elementary education in several schools and graduated from Algona High School.

She married Frank Fish and the couple made their home in various communities in the Midwest and Florida.

After his death in 1976, Ellen moved to Clear Lake. She worked at Masters Chiropractic Clinic in Mason City and for Amicare. In 1992, she moved to Forest City, where she provided in-home care for the elderly.

Ellen was a loving mother and grandmother who treasured the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by four daughters and their spouses, Sherry and Jeff Killian, of Grove City, Ohio, Kyle Fish and Jerry Driver, of Nashville, Tenn., Kim and George Tsangaris, of Tampa, Fla. and Kerri and Lowell Segerstrom, of Forest City; a niece, Shannon King, of Colorado; and a nephew, Scott Adair; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Dale; and a sister, Joan Adair.

MURIEL HUGHES ANDERSON

CANON CITY, Colo. - Muriel Hughes Anderson, 71, formerly of Mason City and Clear Lake, died Monday (April 3, 2000) in Canon City, Colo.

She was born May 16, 1928, in Red Wing, Minn., to Eldon and Beatrice (Young) Hughes. She was a graduate of Mason City High School.

Mrs. Anderson enjoyed genealogy research. Prior to her marriage and shortly after, she worked as a telephone operator.

Mrs. Anderson spent several years as a Sunday school teacher.

She was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.

On Aug. 11, 1946, in the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, she married George LeRoy Anderson, who survives.

She is also survived by sons, Kevin, of Des Moines, Curtis, of Golden, Colo., Vincent, of Mason City, Daniel, of Canon City, Colo. and Dana, of Hoquiam, Wash.; a daughter, Victoria, of Cosmopolis, Wash; nine grandchildren; a sister, Nellie Tickal, of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a infant brother; a sister; and one son, Brian Wesley.

Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 6, at the Holt Chapel of the Garden in Canon City, Colo. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society through Holt Family Funeral Home in Canon City, Colo.

FRANCES L. CAMPBELL

GARNER - Frances "Lucy" L. Campbell, 78, of Garner, passed away Saturday (April 8, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2000, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner, with the Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Monday at the Chapel.

Frances "Lucy" Lucile Campbell, the daughter of Ernest B. and Marie F. (Scott) Motley, was born May 1, 1921, at Madisonville, Ky. She graduated from the University of Texas, majoring in English.

On June 10, 1949, she was married to Robert E. Campbell at Mason City. They made their home in Mason City.

She enjoyed her last years living with her son, Scott and his family, in Garner. Her interests included health care planning and politics.

She was civic minded, being involved in Girl Scouts, Chapter LJ of P.E.O. and was a past president of Chapter IW of P.E.O.

She is survived by a daughter, Brig. Gen. Carol C. Elliott and her husband, Mark D. Jr., of San Antonio, Texas; and two sons, Bruce E. Campbell and his children, Brian and Becky, of Centreville, Va. and Scott H. Campbell and his wife, Juli and their children, Kati and Jay, of Garner.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother.

GARNER - Harry F. McAloon, 73, of 390 Grove, died Thursday (April 6, 2000) at his home.

CALVIN JOSEPH SMITH

MASON CITY - Calvin Joseph Smith, 77, of 4 Third St. N.W., died Tuesday (April 11, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Alan Sheldon of the Church of Christ officiating. A flag-folding ceremony will be conducted at the funeral home by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Inurnment will follow at a later date in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and will continue from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Friday.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the Calvin Smith Memorial Fund.

Calvin was born Jan. 23, 1923, the son of Walter Lewis and Martha Frances (Prodza) Smith in Kenmare, N. D.

Calvin was inducted into the United States Army on March 25, 1943. During his tour of duty, he earned the following awards and commendations: European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, American Theater Service Medal, three Overseas Service Bars and a Lapel Button. He was given an honorable discharge on Nov. 6, 1945.

In August of 1955, Calvin was united in marriage to Florence Lucas. The couple have resided in the Mason City Area since their union.

Calvin could often be found in his garden tending to his tomatoes and green peppers. He was also known to enjoy conversing with his friends and family when his health permitted. Calvin was an outgoing outdoorsman who spent hours fishing as part of his relaxation. Calvin was a generous person who loved to extend himself to his grandchildren.

Calvin was a former member of the San Juan-Marne VFW Post 733 and a former member of the Moose Lodge 1328.

Those thankful for having shared in Calvin's life include his wife, Florence; three daughters, Cheryl Asche and her husband, Chuck, Charlotte Rock and her husband, Robert, and Denell Collins and her husband, Philip, all of Mason City; five sons, Calvin Joseph Smith Jr. and his wife, Kristi, of Houston, Texas, Bruce Smith and his wife, Myrna, of Mason City, Walter Smith of Huston, Texas, Sam Smith and his friend, Lisa, of Melbourne, Fla., and Patrick Smith and his wife, Jackie, of Mason City; seven sisters, Agnes Kays, Annie Weltikol, Donna Hilde, Margie Schopper, Alice Schaunessy, Irene Carey and Mary Ann Drebash; five brothers, Dick Smith, Jake Smith, Joe Smith, James Smith and Bill Smith; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Sam and John.

FLOYD "PETE" E. CHARBONNEAU JR.

BRITT - Floyd "Pete" E. Charbonneau Jr., 76, passed away Tuesday (April 11, 2000) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Britt with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Britt VFW and American Legion posts.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and will resume one hour prior to services at the church Friday

Pete, the son of Floyd G. and Lucy Boutilier Charbonneau Sr., was born Jan. 23, 1924, in Ottawa, Ill. At the age of five he moved with his family to Britt. He received his education in the Britt school system and graduated from Britt High School in 1943.

Following graduation from high school, he joined the United States Navy and served on board the USS Bolivar in the Pacific.

Pete was united in marriage with Lois M. Deibler on July 23, 1945, at the Little Brown Church. Following his discharge he returned to Britt and attended Britt Junior College. He was employed with his father and later took over the filling station and farmed.

Pete enjoyed all sports, especially watching his grandsons participate. He also enjoyed trapping and hunting and loved to travel. Pete was a member of the Britt VFW and American Legion posts. He has also served on the Britt City Council.

Pete is survived by his wife, Lois of Britt; two sons, Mitch Charbonneau of Britt and William "Mike" Charbonneau and his wife, Janice, and their sons, Justin and John, of Britt; one brother, Roy Charbonneau and his wife, Lillian, of Britt; two sisters, Eva Schleuger of Britt and Evelyn Smidt of Britt; and one brother-in-law, Milton Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, one sister and two brothers-in-law.

HELEN THERESA BECK

CLEAR LAKE - Helen Theresa Beck, 78, died Sunday (April 9, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Graveside services were held at the Clear Lake Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Johnson of Hospice of North Iowa officiating. The body was cremated.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Helen was born May 15, 1921, in Chicago, Ill. She was the daughter of Waclav and Philamin (Scarkolska) Wendolowski. She graduated from high school in Chicago.

She married Elmer L. Beck on Aug. 2, 1941, in Kahoka, Mo. They moved to Clear Lake in 1945. Helen helped her husband with the business, Beck & Fisher Construction and Beck Excavating.

She was a member of the First Congregation Church in Clear Lake. Helen loved walking and mowing the yard, gardening, sewing and fishing.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Katherine L. Beck, Clear Lake; a sister, Regina Weiler, Largo, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer, who died March 27, 1981; and one brother, Chester Wendolowski.

BELMOND - Edward C. McLaughlin, 91, died Tuesday (April 11, 2000) at Belmond Community Hospital.

RICHARD DEAN LARSON

GARNER - Richard Dean Larson, better known as Dick, 68, of Garner passed away Monday (April 10, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 14, at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller with the Rev. Owen Gaasedelen officiating. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Interment will be at Ellington Prairie Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Richard Dean Larson, the son of Clifford Earl and Agnes Kathryn (Johnson) Larson, was born May 23, 1931, at Mason City. He grew up on the family farm northeast of Garner and graduated from Garner High School in 1948. He attended the University of Iowa at Iowa City.

Dick served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After the service, he farmed with his parents.

On Oct. 9, 1955, he was married to Deloris Andreasen at Audubon. He continued to farm and also drove a truck for Schmidt Livestock. In 1972 he became the manager at the Forest City Golf and Country Club. In 1979 he purchased the Bungalow Restaurant and Motor Lodge which he continued to operate until the time of his death. Dick also had other business interests.

He enjoyed his family, grandchildren and friends. He also enjoyed card playing, going for a Sunday drive and was an avid sports fan. Dick was very proud to have his farm recognized as a Century Farm.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and past member of Ellington Prairie Church. He was a member of the Garner American Legion, lifetime member of the Garner V.F.W., served on the board of directors of the Iowa Restaurant Association and was active in a bowling league.

He is survived by his children, Patricia Kay Goerner and her husband, John, of Liberty Hill, Texas, Elizabeth Joan "Betty Jo" Larson Gustafson and her husband, Tim, of Apple Valley, Minn., Sally Jean Larson of Forest City, Charles Earl Larson of Clear Lake and Robert Dean Larson and his wife, Renee, of Naperville, Ill.; four grandchildren, Danielle Larson, Brooke Larson, Abby Larson and Jenna Gustafson; a sister, Marlys Ennis and her husband, Richard, of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Merry Larson Stroud of Indianola; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford in 1989; his mother, Agnes in 1995; and a brother, LeRoy Larson in 1983.

THORNTON - Ernie F. Peters, 86, died Tuesday (April 11, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Thornton with the Rev. Jim Gochenouer officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton. Military graveside services will be conducted by Anton Jewell Post No. 440 American Legion, Thornton.

Ernest "Ernie" Fred Peters was born on Jan. 15, 1914, in Clear Lake, Minn., to Fred and Anna Hoeck Peters. Ernie was schooled in Clear Lake, Minn., and worked at various locations until serving his country in World War II. Ernie landed at Casablanca, serving in North Africa and fought in the invasion at Sicily as well as Omaha Beach and earned the Distinguished Unit Citation. During his time in the service, he was able to personally visit with General Patton twice. He was also awarded the Bronze Star for valor. In 1997 Ernie was awarded a medal from the French government at a ceremony at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City.

Following his discharge, Ernie returned to the Thornton area and was married to Florine Jacobsen on Nov. 4, 1945, at Mason City. He then worked at Calara Farm near Thornton, where he showed sheep, cattle and hogs. In 1948 Ernie began driving the Standard Oil Tank Wagon until retiring in April 1975.

Ernie enjoyed gardening and traveling, but his true love was ballroom dancing. Ernie had served on the Thornton Volunteer Fire Department as well as the City Council and school board. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Thornton where he was a longtime usher. He was also a member of the American Legion Post in Thornton.

Survivors include his wife Florine of Thornton; one daughter, Nancy Hentges and her husband, Jerry, of Shawano, Wis.; one son, Bob Peters and his wife, Iwona, of Mason City; three grandchildren, Dr. Melissa Hentges, Justin Hentges and Nicoletta Peters; sisters, Mary Swanson of Salem, Ore., Christine Brown and her husband, Herman,, of Hillsboro, Ore., Frieda Marchant and her husband, Hilton, of Soldotna, Alaska; and one brother, Herbert Peters and his wife, Sharon, of Fallon, Nev.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Walt, Ferd and Art.

ST. PETER, Minn. - Michael B. Smith, 67, died Tuesday (April 11, 2000) at St. Peter Community Hospital.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Catholic Church in St. Peter, Minn., with the Rev. Harry Behan officiating. Burial with military honors will take place in Calvary Cemetery, St. Peter.

There will be a sharing of memories from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the dinning hall of First Lutheran Catholic Church and a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. St. Peter Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Michael B. Smith was born on Feb. 1, 1933, in Mason City to Leo F. and Mary B. (Barrett) Smith. He attended and graduated from Mason City High School. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed on Okinawa.

He graduated from Mankato State University with a bachelor's degree in social work. Michael married Carol Green of New Ulm on Oct. 15, 1955, in St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Dubuque.

After farming for several years, they moved to St. Peter. He worked as an Employment Counselor for the state of Minnesota where he was instrumental in developing the WIN (Work Incentive Program). Later he was production supervisor in charge of final finish at Alumacraft Boat Company in St. Peter for 17 years, retiring in 1995.

Michael was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, the VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed his family, reading, driving in the country and Notre Dame football games.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, St. Peter, Minn.; two sons, Tim and his wife, Mary Beth, St. Peter, and Mike and his fiancee, Mary Ofstead, of Tacoma, Wash.; three daughters, Patricia, Plymouth, Minn., Ann and her husband, Tom Conlon, St. Peter, and Susan and her husband, Tom Fort, Plymouth, Minn.; two brothers, James of Canon City, Colo., and Joseph Leo and his wife, Jane, of Mason City; two sisters, Mary Anne and her husband, Kirby Lawlis, of Mequon, Wis., and her twin, Patricia Cain of West Hartford, Conn.; maternal aunts, Loretta Keleher of Albuquerque, N.M., Ella Muehe of Mason City, and Mary Barrett of Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

OSAGE - Jene C. Scott, 79, of Osage, died Tuesday (April 11, 2000) at Faith Lutheran Home.

Mrs. Scott was born July 25, 1920, in Mitchell County as the first of nine children born to Theodore and Grace (Naber) Epple. She lived in Mitchell County during most of her childhood.

She was married to Eldo Scott on July 13, 1942, in Austin, Minn. They moved to the Clear Lake area where they farmed. During 1957, they moved to a farm in Floyd County, just across the Mitchell County line. Mr. Scott died during 1988. In the fall of 1989, Mrs. Scott moved into the Hamlin Garland Apartments, where she lived until the time of her death.

She is survived by three daughters, Elaine Caughron and her husband, Jon, of Waterloo, Betty Anderson and her husband, Lyle, of Emmons, Minn., and Patricia Evans and her husband, Mark, of Osage; three sons, Phillip Scott and his wife, Elaine, of Boscobel, Wis., Eldon Scott and his wife, Janice, of Forest City, and Kevin Scott and his wife, Colleen, of Osage; 17 grandchilden and eight great-grandchldren; two brothers, Wayne Epple of Grants Pass, Ore., and Orrie Epple of Aredale; four sisters, Arlene Axiotis and Barbara Swieter of Hampton, Kathleen Harms of Muscoda, Wis., and Lois Novak of Highland, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eldo, who died during 1988; a granddaughter, Jackie, who died during 1994; a brother, Ross Epple; and a sister, Yvonne Scott.

Mr. Stiles was born on Aug. 12, 1910, at Fredericksburg, a son of Frederick Arthur and Zipporah Belle (Bayles) Stiles. He attended school in both Fredericksburg and Warrensburg, Mo.

Mr. Stiles farmed most of this life in the Mason City and Rockford areas and later at Twin Lakes, Minn.

He was married to Velma Lee Carroll on Aug. 29, 1930, at First Baptist Church in Mason City. To this union was born one daughter.

When Mr. Stiles was not working he could be found fishing all over North Iowa and was especially happy at his place at Waterville, Minn., and during the winters, at Tyler, Texas, fishing at Lake Fork and Lake Palestine. He also was an avid card player, enjoying 500, pinochle and Skip-Bo. He also played guitar, and even when his hands became crippled he learned to use a slide that his friends made for him. He had a warm, gentle nature and was endearing to his family and friends. He loved to reminisce about the old days.

Mr. Stiles is survived by his daughter, Joyce Elaine and her husband, Rollin Howell, of Moravia; three grandchildren, Barbara and her husband, William Newell, of Eldon, Mo., Steven Howell and his wife, Alfie, of Mason City, and David Howell and his wife, Betty, of Fairfield; six great-grandchildren, Rachael Roman, Anthony and William Newell and Ryan, Anne and Andrew Howell; and a sister, Pauline Medina of Victorville, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who died April 12, 1933; his parents; and two brothers, Wesley and Richard Stiles.

Mr. Howe, a son of Uel Burton and Dorothy (Sells) Howe, was born Dec. 13, 1922, in Mason City. He graduated from Mason City High School during 1941, then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps for service during World War II.

After his discharge during 1946, he returned to Mason City where he met his future wife, Anna Boekelman. They were married on Dec. 22, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union, two sons were born.

Mr. Howe worked for Northwestern Portland Cement for a few years, and retired from Agri Industries after working there for more than 20 years.

He had been a member of Wesley United Methodist Church for 40 years. He enjoyed gardening and tending to the needs of the yard. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his two grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Anna, of Mason City; two sons, Larry and his wife, Karen, of Mason City, and Gary of Mason City; two grandchildren, Jeromy and Dustin, both of Mason City; three sisters, Alberta Rheingans, Hazel Leaman and Mary Sable, all of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy J. Simon was born Feb. 2, 1919, in Rockwell, daughter of Patrick and Margaret (Calahan) Fitzgerald. She married Irvin L. Simon in 1938.

Dorothy lived in Mason City most of her life. Before retiring she worked at the college library.

She is survived by her children, Sandra, Bill and Kathy; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

NEW HAMPTON - Virgil "Harry" Hackman, 79, died Monday (April 10, 2000) at New Hampton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of natural causes.

Virgil John Hackman was born Oct. 27, 1920, near St. Lucas, the son of Tony and Anna (Reicks) Hackman. He attended school at St. Luke's Catholic School in St. Lucas.

After his schooling he worked as a farm hand until he entered the U. S. Army on March 30, 1944. He served during World War II, where he received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart in 1945 and also the American legion Silver Star Citation. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 9, 1945.

After returning home from the service, he worked as a farm hand for John Arnhalt and later drove a truck for Harry Cutsforth and Bill Hill. He then began working road construction for Mark Eischeid and also Reilly Construction until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with children, especially his nieces and nephews. He also loved sports, especially baseball.

Virgil is survived by five sisters, Florence Uhlenhake of Ossian, Lillian Haas of Sublimity, Ore., Sally (Virgil) Peters of New Hampton, Alfreda (Charles) Nesteby of Dubuque, and Lorraine Wilhelms of Phoenix, Ariz.; three brothers, Vern (Thecia) Hackman of San Diego, Calif., Luke Hakeman of Waterloo, and Robert (Karen) Hackman of Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Louis Hackman, two sisters, Olivia Hackman and Theola Hackman; and five nephews, Mike and John Walker, Ronald Nesteby, Dean Peters, and Justin Uhlenhake.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner, with Father John Hemann officiating. Inurnment will be held in the St. Boniface Cemetery in Garner.

Harry F. McAloon was born April 13, 1926, in New Hampton, to Robert and Elsa (Ribbeck) McAloon. He graduated from New Hampton High School. Harry enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served during World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Iowa.

On Aug. 3, 1953, Harry was united in marriage with Theresa Haus in Des Moines.

Harry worked for the City of Des Moines, Chickasaw County and the U.S. Parks Service. He then was employed by the County of San Diego as a county planner. He retired in 1969. Harry then spent a number of years with Hal's Ramblers.

Harry was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church of Garner.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Theresa McAloon, of Garner; daughter, Michelle Lau and her husband, Dennis, of Belmond; son, Mark McAloon, of Mason City; son, Martin McAloon and his wife, Kay, of Garner; grandchildren, Bobbi Breitkreutz, Danielle Breitkreutz, Shannon Lau, September Lau, Summer Lau, Dustin Lau, Dane Lau, Derek Lau, David Lau, Devin Lau, Samantha Lau, Stephanie Lau, Shawnessey Lau and Shelby Lau.

BETTY MARIE BARKEMA

BELMOND - Funeral services for Betty Marie Barkema, 79, of Belmond, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Goodell, with Pastor Curtis DeVance officiating. Interment will be in Amsterdam Cemetery in Goodell.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Betty Marie (Burgess) Barkema, the daughter of Thomas and Mabel (Smith) Burgess, was born Feb. 24, 1921, at the family home in Goodell.

She was united in marriage to Hauko Barkema on Aug. 20, 1940, at the Immanuel Reformed Church, east of Belmond. To this union two sons were born, Randall and Russell.

They farmed together for 37 years east of Belmond. On March 31, 1977, they retired to a new home in Clear Lake. After Hauko died in 1987, Betty continued to live in Clear Lake until September of 1995, when she moved to Belmond.

She became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in April of 1999 and died there on Thursday (April 13, 2000).

Those left to cherish her memories are her sons, Randall and his wife, Alta, of Charles City and Russell Barkema and his wife, Kay, of Belmond; grandchildren, Todd Barkema and his wife, Renee, of Monticello, Kevin Barkema and his wife, Gayle, of Conrad, and Justin Barkema, of Ankeny; stepgrandchildren, Whitney and Justin; great-grandchildren, Adam, Rachel, Leah, Abby and Brad; a brother, Joe Burgess and his wife, Aileen, of Garner.

EDNA MARGUERITE REDING

ALGONA - Funeral services for Edna Marguerite Reding, 76, of Algona, formerly of St. Joe, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, St. Joseph, Bode, with Father Paul Eisele officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, St. Joseph, Bode.

Edna Marguerite Reding was born on Dec. 2, 1923, at St. Benedict, to Edward and Margaret Freeze Youngwirth. When Edna was three years old, the family moved to Whittemore and she attended and graduated from Presentation Academy in 1941.

Edna worked at the Civilian Conservation Corp Office in Algona, as a bookkeeper and later at the Algona Creamery and the Security State Bank.

On April 15, 1947, Edna married Marvin Reding and the couple moved to a farm east of St. Joe.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and was past Grand Regent and a long-time president of the Good Will Club of Sherman Township.

Edna organized and belonged to the Farmerette Card Club since 1949 and enjoyed gardening, reading, staying at the summer lake home, playing in various 500 and Euchre card clubs in the community and being with her family and enjoying her grandchildren.

Edna lived in Algona and died on Wednesday (April 12, 2000) at the Kossuth Regional health Center at the age of 76.

Edna is survived by her children, Mike Reding and his wife, Laurie, of Irvington, Sue Kuper and her husband, Myron, of Osage, Colleen Farnham and her husband, Bill, of Mason City, Marcia Becker and her husband, Steve, of Algona and Phil Reding and his wife, Celeste of Granite Bay, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; one sister, Dolores Kramer, of Algona; two brothers, Leonard Youngwirth, of Bonners Ferry, Idaho and Vic Youngwirth and his wife, Marion, of Sherburn, Minn.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Margaret Youngwirth; husband, Marvin; sisters, Helen Plathe, Ruth McGuire and Irene Kohlhaas.

GRACE M. HILL

FOREST CITY - Former Forest City resident, Grace M. Hill, 93, died Friday (April 14, 2000) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, with the Rev. John W. Gannett of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Grace Hill Memorial Fund.

Grace Mildred Brighton Hill was born in Leland, on Feb. 15, 1907, the daughter of August and Mertie (Scott) Anderson. She received her education in a rural school near her home.

She married James Brighton, of Leland, and to this union was born one daughter, Beverly Ann. He preceded her in death on March 30, 1934.

For many years, Grace and her daughter made their home with Emil D. Christenson.

Grace married Arthur Hill on Dec. 31, 1959. He preceded her in death in 1968.

Grace loved gardening, flowers, canning and made more than 100 quilts for Lutheran World Relief.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City and was a former member of West Prairie Lutheran Church in Leland.

She is survived by her daughter, Beverly and her husband, Raymond Nedved, of Mason City; her four grandchildren, Daniel Nedved, Denise Surat and her husband, Jim, Stacey Wood and her husband, Doug, all of Mason City and Cheryl Mejia and her husband, Bob, of Phenix City, Ala.; a sister, Hazel Akkerman, of Titonka; a stepson, the Rev. George Brighton, of Newell; stepdaughters, Marjorie Wangen, of Hayward, Minn. and LaVaune Hill, of California; many stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews; and 10 great-grandchildren.

MARGARET B. HARTMAN

MASON CITY - Margaret B. Hartman, 94, of Mason City, died Thursday (April 13, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City.

Her body was cremated. There will be no visitation.

A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date at Holy Family Catholic Church. Inurnment will take place in Wall Lake Cemetery in Wall Lake.

Margaret B. Hartman was born Feb. 23, 1906, in Odebolt, the daughter of Edward P. and Louisa (Schaller) Hartman.

Margaret graduated from Lake View High School and then attended Clarke College in Dubuque. She graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and then did graduate work at the University of Iowa.

She taught elementary school at Jefferson School in Mason City for many years. Margaret was active in the Mason City Community. She received the Sertoma Club award for humanity and volunteerism in 1974.

Margaret was survived by two nieces and four nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and two brothers.

ELERY B. BERT STILES

FAIRFIELD - Elery B. Bert Stiles, 89, formerly of Mason City, died Monday (April 10, 2000) at the Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Ronald Stein of First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Friday at the Fullerton Funeral Home.

Bert was born on Aug. 12, 1910, at Fredericksburg, the son of Frederick Arthur and Zipporah Belle (Bayles) Stiles. He attended school in both Fredericksburg and Warrensburg, Mo.

He farmed most of his life in the Mason City and Rockford areas and later at Twin Lakes, Minn.

On Aug. 29, 1930, he was united in marriage to Velma Lee Carroll at the First Baptist Church in Mason City. To this union was born one daughter.

When Bert was not working he could be found fishing all over North Iowa and was especially happy at his place at Waterville, Minn., and in the winters at Tyler, Texas, fishing at Lake Fork and Lake Palestine.

He was also an avid card player, enjoying 500, pinochle and Skip-Bo.

Elery also played guitar and, even when his hands became crippled, learned to use a slide that his friend made for him. Bert had a warm, gentle nature and was endearing to his family and friends. He loved to reminisce about the old days.

Those thankful in sharing his life include his daughter, Joyce Elaine and her husband, Rollin Howell, of Moravia; his three grandchildren, Barbara and her husband, William Newell, of Eldon, Mo., Steven and his wife, Alfie Howell, of Mason City and David and his wife, Betty Howell, of Fairfield; six great-grandchildren, Rachael Roman, Anthony and William Newell, Ryan, Anne, and Andrew Howell; and one sister, Pauline Medina, of Victorville, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife on April 12, 1993; his parents; and two brothers, Wesley and Richard Stiles.
