** Hilary Greimann

GARNER — Hilary Greimann, 90, of Garner, died Wednesday (March 25, 1998) at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Tenold Funeral Home, Klemme.

** Alvin C. Allen

BELMOND — Alvin C. Allen, 86, of Belmond, died Tuesday (March 24, 1998) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Lowell Halvorson, officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, with a 7 p.m. Odd Fellows service. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Alvin C. Allen was born Sept. 24, 1911, in Denver, Colo.

Survivors include two daughters, Ardith Stevenson, Spencer, and Aileen Hoffman, Shellsburg; two sons, Arnold Allen, Olathe, Kan., and Arden Allen, Ackley; nine grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Fraser, Latimer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one sister.

** Rose Ella Hermen

ELGIN — Rose Ella Hermen, 75, died Tuesday (March 24, 1998) at her rural Elgin home, suddenly of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Illyria Community Church, rural Elgin, with the Rev. Arley Ellingson, officiating. Burial will follow in the Illyria Cemetery, rural Elgin.

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home, Elgin, and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Rose Ella Hermen was born on May 26, 1922, in Volga, Iowa to Willis and Eliza "Lizzie" (Meyer) Chase.

She was raised and educated in the area, graduating from Volga High School in 1939. She worked at the Volga Grocery Store for a time.

She was united in marriage to James Hermen on June 28, 1951 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union.

Together they resided near Elgin and operated the Elgin Echo Newspaper.

Rose Ella was a longtime member of the Illyria Community Church.

She will be remembered as one who enjoyed the outdoors and gardening. She also enjoyed music, playing the clarinet in school and later taught herself the accordian.

Survivors include two sons, Steven and his wife, Mary, Elgin, and Duane and his wife, Terri, Mason City,; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Williams and her husband, Dave, Brian Hermen, Bradley Hermen, Randy Hermen, Rodney Hermen, Hillary Hermen, and Aaron Hermen; three great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandson; a brother, Ralph Chase, Volga, Iowa; and two sisters, Inez Christen and her husband, Bill, Elgin, and Bernice Nickels, Elkader.

Rose Ella was preceded in death by her husband, James, on Aug. 20, 1996; her parents; and three brothers.

** Leon D. Adreon

MASON CITY — Leon D. Adreon, 80, of 665 15th St. S.E., died Tuesday (March 24, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Linda Bibb, of the First United Methodist Church, Corwith, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, and one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Leon Donald Adreon was born April 30, 1917, at Corwith.

Survivors include three daughters, Lurlia Fisher, Klemme, Roselend Claude, Corwith, and Rena Freiberg, Corwith; and two sons, Dayton Adreon, Britt, and Allen Adreon, Meringo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, two brothers, and one sister.

ALEXANDER — Claire (Arends) Johnson, 90, of Alexander, died Wednesday (March 25, 1998) at the Franklin General Nursing Facility, Hampton.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Latimer.

ROCKWELL — William F. Huglin, 81, of 9597 Partridge Ave., Rockwell, died Tuesday (March 24, 1998) at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Mason City.

Funeral services are tentatively planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, at Fullerton Funeral Home, where other arrangements are incomplete.

** Victor P. Ewy

RICEVILLE — Victor P. Ewy, 75, of Riceville, died Tuesday (March 24, 1998) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Conway Funeral Home, Riceville. Inurnment will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Riceville.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Conway Funeral Home.

Victor P. Ewy was born June 14, 1922 in Burlington, Wis.

Survivors include his wife, Arla; one daughter, Cindy Harris, Rudd; one son, Mark, of Riceville; one stepson, Gary Severson, Everson, Wash.; one grandson; one brother, Warren Ewy, Riceville; two sisters, Evelyn Tonn, Milwaukee, Wis., and Alma Helm, Albert Lea, Minn.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, and one sister.

** Janice Dodds

ALGONA — Janice Dodds, 60, of 316 South Ave., died Tuesday (March 24, 1998) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Algona, with the Rev. Dan Mangler, officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, and after 9 a.m. Friday at the church.

Janice Dodds was born March 11, 1938, in Algona.

Survivors include three daughters, Karen Carlson, Olin, Tana Harms, Algona, and Rhea Julius, Burt; seven grandchildren; one sister, Diane Webb, Roland; and one brother, David Markla, Algona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband.

** Anna B. Deverell

ROCKWELL — Anna B. Deverell, 93, formerly of 2321 S. Taft Ave., Mason City, died Monday afternoon (March 23, 1998) at the Rockwell Community Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell, with the Rev. Ronald Bollinger, officiating. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery, in Rockford.

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Chapel in Rockwell.

Anna was born March 4, 1905 the daughter of Karl and Emma (Huller) Ficken in Rockwell, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Samuel A. Deverell on Sept. 12, 1921 in Rockwell.

Anna was a lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Rockwell and was very active in the church circles.

To Anna her family was her life, she enjoyed spending as much time as possible with them. Anna was a great cook who enjoyed baking, especially molasses and date nut roll cookies, which she took to her daughter's work on Fridays. She liked being outdoors, traveling all over the United States, dancing at the Surf and playing cards, especially Shanghi Rummy.

Anna is survived by her daughter, Ruth (Tourtellott) Ward, of Clear Lake, S.D.; one sister, Emma Kitch, of Carroll, Iowa; six grandchildren, Glenda Craig, Ann Stucky, David, Clifford, Paul and Alan Deverell; 16 great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Ralph; two brothers, Herbert and Karl; and one sister, Mena Pecht.

** Peggy Wachendorf

MASON CITY — Peggy Wachendorf, 44, of 1147 15th N.E., Mason City, died Tuesday (March 24, 1998) following a short illness caused by a stroke, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City.

** Peggy M. Wachendorf

MASON CITY — Peggy M. Wachendorf, 44, of 1147 15th St. N.E., died Tuesday, (March 24, 1998) following a short illness caused by a stroke, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jack Gannett officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Peggy M. Wachendorf memorial fund.

Peggy was born on Sept. 23, 1953, at Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Lester and Margaret (Urban) Wachendorf. She attended school in Mason City and Manly.

She then was employed as a nurses aid at the Odd Fellows and Good Shepherd Nursing Homes. Later she worked at Fieldstone as a cabinet finisher and most recently at Directions Research as a office worker.

Peggy was married to Patrick Aird. She loved animals especially her chocolate lab "Hershey." She enjoyed spending time with her mother and reading mysteries and nonfiction. She was "full of life" and her favorite activities were playing cards and spending time with her family.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Patrick and her mother, Margaret Wachendorf both of Mason City; two sisters, Carol and her husband, Richard Willier, Mason City; and Bonnie and her husband, Lanny McNamara, all of Mason City; Bonnie's children, John and his wife, Dariel, Lanny Jr. and Greg McNamara and John's children Levi, Peggy's godchild, Austin and Melissa and Greg's children, Codie and Jacob; a special aunt, Bonnie Stoneking, Plymouth, Iowa; and a lifetime friend, Pat Merrill, of Webster City.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1988; and one brother, Gary Wachendorf.

** William F. Huglin

ROCKWELL — William F. Huglin, 81, of 9597 Partridge Ave., Rockwell, died Tuesday (March 24, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, at the Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Randy Nielsen, chaplain of Good Shepherd Nursing Home, officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Diabetes Foundation.

William was born on Oct. 12, 1916, at Blue Earth, Minn., the son of William F. and Nelle (Crawford) Huglin. He graduated in 1933 from the Blue Earth High School.

He was a former member of the Moose Lodge, member and past board member of the Cerro Gordo County Cattlemen Association, North Iowa Golden Wedding Jubilee Club. He was a county ASC committeeman and when he lived in Rake he served on the school board.

Bill was united in marriage to Florence Smith on Feb. 5, 1938, in Buffalo Center. They lived there for two years and then lived west of Rake for 19 years before moving to Rockwell in 1959. He farmed wherever he lived and loved his livestock.

He also enjoyed dancing at the Surf Ballroom, fishing and studying railroad books and maps.

William is survived by his wife of 60 years, Florence; their daughter, Betty Huglin of Wausau, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Huglin was preceded in death by one infant brother, and a brother, Raymond.

** Dorothy Pauline Rost

MASON CITY — Dorothy Pauline Rost, 79, of 415 14th St. N.W., died Thursday (March 26, 1998) at her home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating.

Following cremation, inurnment services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a 4 p.m. Rosary by St. John's Circle, and a 6 p.m. scriptural wake service.

Dorothy Pauline Rost was born Feb. 21, 1919, at Mason City, the daughter of Paul and Violet (O'Brien) Schiesberg. She graduated from Mason City High School.

On Sept. 5, 1942, she married Raymond "Bud" Rost at the old Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

Dorothy was very devoted to her family; she especially enjoyed their family trips and vacations. She also enjoyed volunteering at Good Shepherd Health Care Center for several years.

Dorothy was a devoted grandmother to her grandsons, Jon and Ned.

She was a lifelong member of Holy Family Catholic Church and participated in ladies' circles.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Raymond "Bud" Rost, Mason City; two daughters, Sheila Rost Hooper and her husband, Richard, Ventura, Calif.; and Catherine Rost and her husband, Winston Barclay, Iowa City, Iowa; two grandchildren, Jon and Ned Barclay, Iowa City, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Kathleen Johnson, Mason City; and nieces and nephews.

TITONKA — Louise T. Stockwell, 88, of 312 First Ave. NW, died Wednesday (March 25, 1998) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Good Hope Lutheran Church, Titonka, with the Rev. Merlin Norris officiating. Burial will take place at the Good Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Titonka.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Titonka.

Louise T. Stockwell was born June 15, 1909, in Burt.

She is survived by two sons, Gerald Stockwell of Oakdale, Calif., and Lee Stockwell of Indian Springs, Ohio; two daughters, Pat Haines of Titonka and Priscilla Earl of San Antonio, Texas; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Carl F. Callies of Pharr, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lemuel Stockwell, her parents, three brothers and four sisters.

** Claire L. Johnson

ALEXANDER — Claire L. (Arends) Johnson, 90, of Alexander, died Wednesday (March 25, 1998) at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Reformed Church in Alexander, with the Rev. Gerald Norman officiating. Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Latimer.

Claire Lavonne was born on a farm west of Alexander to Ben and Alvena (Rehm) Arends on Sept. 17, 1907. She attended and graduated from Alexander Consolidated School.

She married Henry Johnson on April 22, 1925, at Hampton, Iowa. They farmed southeast of Alexander until they retired to Alexander in 1969. Claire was a partner with her husband in the farming operation, helping in the field and caring for animals when needed. She had helped her father from a very early age, so knew well how to do all aspects of farming.

Being a "farmer" she carried that love of the land to growing many beautiful flowers both indoors as well as outdoors, which she enjoyed sharing with friends and family.

Claire was also talented in flower arranging, crafts and cooking. She shared with family and friends her excellent pies and delicious pecan caramel rolls as well as daily meals and lunches.

She was also an excellent seamstress, in the days before "talls" she made everything from jeans to sport coats. She did a good deal of alterations and made many wedding gowns and gowns for members of the bridal party.

She was confirmed into the Christian faith April 24, 1922, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Alexander. After her marriage, she became a member of the First Reformed Church and there she taught Sunday School, was a member and served in several offices of the R.C.W.M.

Throughout her life, Claire had a strong interest in music, particularly vocal music. As a youngster, she began to sing in the church choir, and continued as a soloist and as a member of small groups as well as with the choir until the last few years of her life. She was a charter member of the Alexander Kitchen Klatter Band.

She was a loving, caring, wife, mother and grandmother. Her children and grandchildren provided the highlights of her life and she spent a great deal of time loving and caring for them.

She lived in her home in Alexander until her health would no longer allow her to be alone. In February 1993 she entered a nursing facility at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, where she remained until her death.

She was a member of the Alexander Cemetery Association and for 37 years served as secretary, keeping records of meetings, selling lots and recording them.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Marilyn and Darwin Hill, of Latimer; Jim and Diane Johnson, of Mason City; and Sandra and Bill Ritter, of Minneapolis; her grandchildren, Jennifer and Darren Ritter, Michelle Kallemyn, Lance, Ryan, Steven, Seth and Michael Johnson; and two great-granddaughters, Tahlia Dawn and Taylor Claire.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and her sisters, Beulah Hossler, Dorothy Carstens; and her brother, Bernard Arends.

** Dorothy L. Fanth

MASON CITY — Dorothy L. Fanth, 89, of Mason City, formerly of Davenport, died Tuesday (March 24, 1998) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport.

Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 Second St. S.E., Mason City, Iowa 50401.

Dorothy L. Fanth was born April 13, 1908, in Davenport, to Paul and Pearl (Williams) Bertossa.

Dorothy married Albert G. Fanth on Feb. 28, 1927, in Geneseo, Ill. Albert died on Oct. 22, 1980.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City, and a former member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Davenport.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Alfred Biehl, Mason City, Iowa; a daughter, Marcia "Vicki" Sones, Walcott, Iowa; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

** Catherine A. McDonough

MASON CITY — Catherine A. McDonough, 81, died Monday (March 23, 1998) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 30, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. on Sunday with a public scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street N.E., Mason City.

Catherine A. McDonough was born on Nov. 29, 1916, in Rockwell, the daughter of Michael and Alice (Dougherty) McDonough.

She attended and received her education in the Rockwell School system, graduating from Rockwell High School.

In later years she worked for 25 years as an office clerk for the Montgomery Ward department store in Mason City until her retirement.

She had been a resident of the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City since August 1980.

She enjoyed reading and flowers. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

Catherine is survived by one brother, Bob McDonough and his wife, Florence, of Clear lake; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.

** Hilary Kenneth Quintin Greimann

GARNER — Hilary Kenneth Quintin Greimann, 90, died on Wednesday (March 25, 1998) at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, with Pastor Georgia White-Kisslring officiating.

Interment will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday prior to funeral services at the church. Everyone is invited to attend the committal service at the Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Tenold Funeral Home in Klemme.

Hilary Kenneth Quintin Greimann was born on April 27, 1907, to William and Bettie (Schuldt) Greimann on their farm south of Garner, Iowa.

He attended rural school in Ell Township and graduated from Klemme High School with the class of 1925.

He assisted his father in farming until his marriage to Alice Holck on Jan. 18, 1930, in the Peace Reformed Church parsonage with the Rev. Calvin Schmidt officiating.

The young couple started farming on the place across the field from his parents. To this union, two daughters were born, Marilyn Jean and Lois Ann.

In 1938, Hilary purchased the Garner Roller Mills and the family moved to Garner. There he continued in the business until his retirement in 1965. In 1984, Hilary moved into Prairie View Apartments, and after several falls left him somewhat disabled, he moved into the Concord Care Center in Garner on July 18, 1986.

Hilary was baptized and confirmed in the Peace Reformed Church south of Garner, and at present was a member of the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, where he had at one time taught the adult Sunday school class. He had been a member of the Garner Rotary Club, Garner School Board, was a past president of the Garner Chamber of Commerce, and a chairman of the Billy Sunday Jubilee Committee, as well as participating in many other civic activities.

Survivors include his daughter, Lois Ann Hedquist and her husband, Gerald, of San Jose, Calif.; a granddaughter, Catherine Blecher and her husband, Joseph, of San Jose, Calif.; a grandson, Steven Hedquist and his wife, Kathryn, of Linden, N.J.; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Jessica Blecher; three brothers, Lawrence Greiman and his wife, Hazel, of Garner, Iowa, Victor Greiman and his wife, Lois, of Dayton, Ohio, and Earl Greiman and his wife, Alice, of Golden, Colo.; three sisters, Hallie Stromer, of Rapid City, S.D., Esther Fillmore, of Marion, Iowa, and Gladys Alden and her husband, Eldridge, of Garner, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Hilary was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice, in December 1962; a daughter, Marilyn, in July 1981; and a brother, Maurice.

** Marjorie A. Pattschull

DENVER, Colo. — Marjorie A. Pattschull, 90, died Friday (March 20, 1998) after five days of critical care for pneumonia at Hallmark Nursing Center in Denver, Colo., where she had lived for the past 1 1/2 years.

Mrs. Pattschull lived in Grand Junction, Colo., since 1988, at her home at 424 Pleasant Hollow Court, then at Mesa View Retirement Community.

Mrs. Pattschull was a resident of Mason City, Iowa, most of her life, where she lived at 1118 Manor Drive, until her husband died.

Mrs. Pattschull deeded her body to the medical school at the University of Utah. At a later time, her cremains will be sent to the University of Iowa to be interred with those of her husband who deeded his body to that medical school.

A memorial service for Mrs. Pattschull will be held on May 3 at the First Congregational Church in Grand Junction, Colo.

Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church, either at Grand Junction, Colo., or Mason City, Iowa, or to Hospice of North Iowa.

Mrs. Pattschull was born March 4, 1908, in Mitchell County, Iowa, to Charles J. and Mary Zilk Bywater.

She graduated from Riceville High School in 1927 and attended Iowa State Teacher’s College. She taught rural school, then in Carpenter and Clear Lake, Iowa. After completing her B.A. in 1939, she taught art in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Majorie Bywater married Lowell Pattschull in 1947. The couple had one daughter. Later, Mrs. Pattschull returned to teaching in Mason City at McKinley Elementary School, until her retirement in 1973.

Mrs. Pattschull was active in the First Congregational Church, MacNider Art Museum, Hospice of North Iowa, Opportunity Village of Clear Lake, and the Iowa Iota Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary teachers sorority.

In her 60s and 70s, Mrs. Pattschull was an accomplished artist in several media, including oil painting, drawing, pottery and rosemaling.

She is survived by her daughter, Paula Pattschull (Rosevear), of Evergreen and Denver, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Pattschull in 1987; and her sister, Alice Button in 1993.

CLARION — Minnie R. Hilpipre, 93, of Clarion, died Friday (March 27, 1998) at the Crestview Care Center, Webster City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Chapel of the Willim Funeral Home in Clarion, with Gerald Caquelin, of Webster City, officiating. Burial will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Minnie R. Hilpipre was born on April 3, 1904, in Woolstock.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

CLEAR LAKE — Leo C. Jorgensen, 86, formerly of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Thursday (March 26, 1998) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Clear Lake Cemetery, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. A Masonic service will be held at the grave.

Leo was born Oct. 14, 1911, in Franklin County, Iowa, the son of Danish immigrants, Nels Peter and Carrie (Larsen) Jorgensen.

He graduated from Hampton High School. Following graduation, he pursued a career in the field of banking. He went from bookkeeper to chairman of the board at Citizens State Bank in Iowa Falls and Alden State Bank.

On June 28, 1933, he was united in marriage with Gert Schwieger in Hampton, Iowa. The couple lived in Iowa Falls before moving to Clear Lake, following Leo’s retirement in 1974. After 55 years of marriage, Gert died on March 11, 1988.

Leo then moved to Fort Myers, Fla. He returned to Mason City, Iowa, in 1994.

He was a member of various civic organizations, including the Masonic Lodge, where he was a 55-year member, and the El Kahir Shrine in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

He is survived by one brother, a daughter and two grandsons, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, and brothers and sisters-in-law.

Grace Ethel Miller was born June 17, l908, in rural Bennezette Township, Butler County, Iowa, to James A. and Lena (Glaser) Miller.

She received her education in Bennezette Township Schools No. 6 and No. 7 and graduated from Greene High School in 1926. She then taught school in Bennezette No. 1 and Coldwater No. 9 in rural Greene.

On March 4, l930, she was united in marriage to Erik Anderson at the First Presbyterian Church, Greene. They farmed in the rural Greene area for 25 years. They moved into Greene in 1958.

Following Erick's death on December 20, l975, she continued to live in her home where she enjoyed quilting, needle work, gardening, bird watching and reading poetry. Music played an important part in Grace's life. She played the piano and sang in the church choir and the Greene Community Chorus.

Grace was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church for 75 years. She taught Sunday school and Bible school and was secretary of the Sunday school for many years. She was a member of the U.P.W.

Grace was a member of the Greene Woman's Club, Handi Craft Club, North Iowa Quilters Guild, Greene Quilt Block Club and the Coldwater Community Club and was a 4H leader for many years. She was a volunteer at the Greene Historical Museum and the nursing home.

She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Berns of Charles City; and four grandchildren, Barbara Banks, Russell Berns and Steven Berns, all of Charles City, and Janice Berns of Seattle, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Evelyn was born Jan. 24, 1907, in Walcott Township, near Faribault, Minn., the daughter of John R. and Sophia (Wang) Anderson.

She grew up near Faribault, Minn., and attended schools in that area. She was confirmed at the Eklund Lutheran Church.

She attended the Minneapolis Business College and worked as a secretary for the Carnation Company in Northfield, Minn.

She married Ellsworth Klemesrud on Dec. 16, 1939. He died in August of 1961. She married Rollin Bohning in June of 1974 at Osage. He died in December of l991.

Evelyn enjoyed gardening, especially flowers. She was a faithful member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and sang in the church choir. She was very active in the church circles and served as the church secretary. She was also a member of the Sons of Norway.

Evelyn is survived by one daughter, Laurinda K. Young, and her husband, Jim, Cedar Falls; three granddaughters, Raina Young, Iowa City, Taya Young, Iowa City, and Caitlin Young, Cedar Falls; one sister, Viola Musegades, Faribault, Minn.; and four brothers, Russell Anderson and his wife, Carol, Albert Lea, Minn., Harold Anderson, Cannon Falls, Minn., LeRoy Anderson, Northfield, Minn., and Donald Anderson and his wife, Loretta, Medford, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Ellsworth and Rollin; a daughter, LaVonne Moody; and a brother, George Anderson.

On August 27, 1927, Doris Larsen married Ben Dorenkamp at Albert Lea, Minn. The couple had two sons, Daryl and Ken.

Doris and her husband farmed in rural Alexander until they retired in 1976 and moved into town. Doris had lived in Alexander her whole life.

She was active in the First Reformed Church where she was a member of the church guild and she taught catechism. She was a member of the Cemetery Society and worked at the library for some time.

She is survived by her son, Ken Dorenkamp, and his wife, Sandra, of Alexander; two grand-daughters, Jacqueline Bock of Belmond, and Kendra Dorenkamp of Alexander; four grandsons, Arnold Dorenkamp of Hanlontown, Daryl Dorenkamp of Coulter, Steven Dorenkamp of West Des Moines, and Dan Dorenkamp of Denver, Colo.; three sisters, Leda Schofield, and her husband, Denver, of Rockwell, Emily Modderman of Red wood City, Calif, and Hazel Bachman of Clear Lake; eleven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

BRITT — Hazel Charlotte Perdue, 82, formerly of Red Oak, died Friday (March 27, 1998) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Hazel Charlotte Perdue was born April 20, 1915, at Logansport, Ind.

** Capt. Paul J. ‘Snapper’ Knapp

CORONADO, Calif. — Capt. Paul J. "Snapper" Knapp, 81, a resident of Coronado, Calif., for the past 35 years, died Thursday (March 26, 1998) at the Villa Coronado Conv. Hospital.

Paul, the son of Anton S. "Tony" and Lillian K. Knapp, was born July 1, 1916, in Mason City, Iowa, graduating from Holy Family High School and from the University of Minnesota.

Paul served in the U.S. Navy from 1938 to 1970, achieving the rank of captain and was one of the first of Mason City’s World War II "heroes" to return from the war.

For much of his career, he served as a Naval Aviator Carrier pilot. He was a survivor of Pearl Harbor and served on the U.S.S. Lexington.

For his service during the Battle of the Coral Sea, he was awarded the Navy Cross, and subsequently received the Legion of Merit with Combat "V", in addition to other awards. He served as commanding officer of the U.S.S. Currituck as well as the U.S.S. Princeton.

Paul also served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon from 1965-67.

After retiring from his Navy career, he taught at Memorial Junior High School in San Diego, Calif.

Paul is survived by his wife of 55 years, June Knapp, of Coronado, Calif.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Henry Barnes, of San Marcos, Calif., and Diane and Scott Shields, of Bonita, Calif.; one brother, Jack Knapp, of Mason City; and one sister, Mary Elaine Skram, of Columbia, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Casey and Melissa Barnes, of San Marcos, Calif., Michelle (Barnes) Golec, of San Diego, Calif., and Kelley, Scotty and Kevin Shields, of Bonita, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard A. "Dick" Knapp, of Mason City; and a sister, Kathryn Ann Mahlstadt, of Mason City.

Graveside services with military honors will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9, 1998, at the Holy Cross Cemetery in San Diego, Calif.

She married Ben Lewis on Dec. 25, 1913, in Otsego, Wis. Alice and her husband lived and farmed for many years near Rio, Wis. She moved to Mason City in 1969.

She was an avid reader and loved cooking and sewing. She enjoyed music and playing the organ.

Alice was a member of First Baptist Church in Mason City.

Survivors include three grandchildren, Donna Heidenreich and her husband, Dick, of Mason City; Tom Lewis and his wife, Jan, of Mason City; and Beatrice Lewis and her husband, Terry, of Harpers Ferry; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and numerous cousins.

NORTHWOOD — Kenneth Owen Elliott Sr., 78, died Sunday (March 29, 1998) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

There will be a private family funeral service with Pastor Alan Buresh of the Bethany and Amo Lutheran Church of Storden, Minn., officiating. After the service, Ken's body will be cremated at Memorial Park Crematory.

Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 Second St. S.E., Mason City, in Ken Elliott's name.

Kenneth was born Sept. 5, 1919, the son of Fred Owen and Leela (Benight) Elliott in Dade County, Mo.

On May 27, 1939, Ken was united in marriage to Ilene Stanley in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1941, Ken enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served until 1942.

Mr. Elliott was a carpenter and electrician by trade. He was the plant electrician at the Lehigh Cement Plant for many years.

Whenever he could, he enjoyed going fishing for "Big Fish" and hunting pheasants and deer.

He was an active member of the North American Hunt Club, the National Rifle Association, and was a past president of the Izaak Walton League in Kensett for 15 years. Ken was known to be a "jack of all trades," including being an excellent gardener.

He loved every minute spent with his grandchildren whether it was baiting hooks, teaching them about the outdoors, or whatever they were doing.

Kenneth is survived his wife, Ilene; two daughters, Hazel Aleela and her husband, James Robert Thorpe, of Zumbrota, MN., and Linda LaVonne Haaland, of Hastings, Minn.; one son, Kenneth Owen Jr. and his wife, Toni Elliott, of Pickerington, Ohio; one brother, Wayne Ecton Elliott; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Elliott was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Leela.

NORTHWOOD — Leona Phylis Folkerts, 79, of Northwood, died Monday (March 30, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, at the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Alf Merseth officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., Northwood, and one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the church.

Leona Phylis Folkerts was born on Feb. 19, 1919, in Garner, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Gruben) Johnson. She attended and received her education in the Garner Community School System.

She was united in marriage to Harvey Folkerts on Dec. 5, 1937, in Garner. He preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 1982. After her marriage, she helped her husband on the farm south of Garner until moving to Northwood in 1955.

During her life, she worked for Walker Deluxe Manufacturing Company, which is now called Fleetguard in Lake Mills, as a press operator; working for 21 years until her retirement on May 30, 1980. She had been a resident of the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood since Feb. 1, 1995.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening, crocheting, flowers and camping.

She was a member of the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church, the ladies aid and church circle and was a former member of the Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter.

Survivors include four daughters, Gloria Floy, of Garner; Phyllis Abrahams and her husband, David, of Northwood; Janice Sheffler and her husband, Roger of Fort Madison, Iowa; and LeAnn Berven and her husband, Larry, of Anaheim, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Gast, of Garner, and Annabell Hermanson and her husband, Charles, of Lake Mills; two brothers, DeLos Johnson, of Fort Madison, Iowa, and Herbert Johnson and his wife, Elaine, of Loves Park, Ill.; a special friend, Dellis Walk of Kensett; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she also was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, JoAnn, Hazel and Lydia; and two brothers, Gerd and Henry.
