RUDD — Verna Gale, 88, died Sunday (March 15, 1998) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs.

** Judith (Judy) Benson

CLEAR LAKE — Judith (Judy) Benson, 45, of 709 S. Ninth Street, died Sunday (March 15, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jonathan Swenson officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth Street, Clear Lake. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Judy Benson Memorial Fund.

Judy was born January 20, 1953, in San Diego, Calif., the daughter of Jim R. And Colleen (Caldwell) Dyre.

The family moved to Mason City and then to Clear Lake in 1958. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1971.

She was united in marriage with Larry Benson on Nov. 16, 1973, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura.

Judy was active in the community as a Girl Scout leader. She loved bowling and was involved in bowling leagues for more than 20 years. She was secretary for the adult Sunday Night league.

She was an Avon representative for 20 years and had been employed at the Super 8 Motel in Clear Lake for the past eight years.

Her hobbies included collecting thimbles and other items with strawberries on them and playing with her grandchild.

She was a member of the Clear Lake CB Club (Muddy Pond) until the group disbanded. Her handle was "Little Cricket." She was a past member of the Clear Lake Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.

Judy is survived by her husband, Larry Benson, Clear Lake; a son, Trinity Benson, his wife, Erica, and their son, Nathan, Clear Lake; a daughter, Terry, Clear Lake; her parents, Jim and Colleen Dyre, Clear Lake; a sister, Kathy Septer, and her husband, David, Hills; a brother, Jay Dyre, and his wife, Kami, of Ventura; two nieces, Tanya Septer and Debbie Dyre; a nephew, Dustin Dyre; paternal grandparents, Viva and Beatrice Dyre, Mason City; and her mother-in-law, Agneta Syse, Ventura.

She was preceded in death by a nephew, Shaun Septer, and grandparents, George and Louise Caldwell.

ST. ANSGAR — W. E. Dockstader, 68, died Saturday (March 14, 1998) at North Iowa Medical Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Edward Schmidt officiating. Burial will take place at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

WATERLOO — Melvin Noling, 41, formally of Mason City, died Saturday (March 14, 1998) at Harmony House Nursing Home, Waterloo.

** Herman B. Weaver

THOMPSON — Herman B. Weaver, 77, died Saturday (March 14, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Winter Funeral Home, Thompson, with the Rev. Perry Fruhling officiating. Burial will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home and one hour before the service Tuesday.

Herman was born March 1, 1921, in Titonka.

He is survived by his wife, June Weaver, Thompson; three sisters, June Behrends, Forest City, Lois Harms, Forest City, and Bonnie Hoeft, Forest City; one brother, Cecil Weaver, Mason City; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

** Rosa Anderson

SWEA CITY — Rosa Anderson, 87, died Saturday (March 14, 1998) at the Heritage Nursing Home, Bancroft.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ledyard with the Rev. John Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, Ledyard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft. A prayer service will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Rosa was born August 30, 1910, in Passaic, N. J., the daughter of Louis and Katherine (Magadigz) Schmall.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas Anderson, Omaha, Neb., and Jerome Anderson, Swea City; four grandchildren; and two brothers, Anton Schmall, Charles City, and Leo Schmall, Marion.

Rosa was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, infant twin girls, one sister, and one brother.

MASON CITY — Florence A. Olson, 91, of the Heritage Care Center, 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Sunday (March 15, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Graveside services are tentatively set for 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, 1998, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.

** Virginia U. (Calvert) Lames

MASON CITY — Virginia U. (Calvert) Lames, 15229 Partridge Ave., #45, Mason City, died Sunday (March 15, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Randy Nielson of Good Shepherd Nursing Home officiating.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Virginia U. Lames Memorial Fund.

Virginia U. (Calvert) Lames was born the daughter of Leo Calvert and Ulva (Walrath) Calvert, in Mason City, Iowa.

She attended and graduated from Mason City High School and Kahler Nursing School in Rochester, Minn.

Virginia worked as a registered nurse at Park Hospital in Mason City. She also worked at Plaza Pharmacy, Barkers Shoe Store and managed the Gold Bond Gift Center for eight years.

Virginia married Steven C. Lames on Sept. 20, 1968, in Mason City, Iowa.

Family members include her husband, Steven C. Lames, of Mason City; one son, Dennis Mikkelson, of Key West, Fla.; and one brother, Claude Calvert, of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

** Verna Harriett Gale

NORA SPRINGS — Verna Harriett Gale, 88, formerly of Rudd, died Sunday (March 15, 1998) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye St., Nora Springs, with the Rev. Richard Pippert of Rudd United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, rural Gladbrook.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel and will continue prior to services on Wednesday.

Verna Harriett Gale was born Sept. 25, 1909, in Tama County, daughter of Herman C. and Emma (Schnack) Budolfsen. She married Beryl D. Gale on May 1, 1937, at the Congregational Church in Eldora.

Verna grew up in Tama County and graduated from high school in Gladbrook. Her husband managed the Rockford Co-op for many years.

Verna enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She was a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three children, Carol Tipton and her husband, Bill, Marion; Gene Gale and his wife, Barbara, Reeds Spring, Mo.; and Marilyn Jorgensen and her husband, Harold, Rudd; five grandchildren, Stephanie Tipton Karr and her husband, Ed, Cedar Rapids, Kristy (Jorgensen) Chambers and her husband, David, Rockford; Wendy (Jorgensen) Fullerton and her husband, Steve, Rockford; Travas Gale, Springfield, Mo.; and Moriah Gale, Reeds Spring, Mo.; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Emery Schnack, Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Beryl, on July 7, 1987; one brother, Wesley Budolfsen; and one sister, Minerva Dew.

** Marie G. Burns

HAMPTON — Marie G. Burns, 72, died Sunday (March 15, l998) at the Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ in Hampton with the Rev. David Nelson officiating. Burial will take place at Maynes Grove Cemetery, rural Bradford.

Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Marie was born on Oct. 12, 1925, in Floyd County.

She is survived by her husband, George Burns, Hampton; three daughters, Georgia Preston, St. Charles, Ill., Linda Norris, Eldora, and Geraldine Allen, Hampton; two brothers, Gerald Boelman, New Richland, Minn., and Clarence Boelman, Rochester, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

MASON CITY — Linda J. O'Rourke, 55, of 777 S. Eisenhower Ave., Mason City, died on Saturday (March 14, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Holy Name Catholic Church, Rockford, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greene, officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will begin after 6 p.m. today at the Schumburg Funeral Home, Rockford, with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m.

Linda J. O'Rourke was born Jan. 25, 1943, in rural Rockford.

She is survived by her husband, James W. O' Rourke of Mason City; two children, Mike J. O'Rourke, of Marble Rock, Iowa and Michelle J. DeBettignies, of Cedar Rapids; her mother, Betty Parcher, of Nora Springs; her father, Don Parcher, of Rockford; brothers, Larry Parcher of Rudd, Nick Parcher, of Clear Lake, Steven Parcher, of Laredo, Texas, and Ron Parcher, of Rockford; sisters, Bonnie Caspers, of Rockwell, and Janet Winter, of Muscatine; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter and one brother.

** Joseph M. Packard

MASON CITY — Joseph M. Packard, 77, of 721 15th Pl. N.E., died March 7, 1998, at St. Luke's Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.

Funeral services and burial were held on Friday, March 13, at Alden, Iowa.

Joseph Packard was born July 13, 1920, at Renwick, Iowa.

** Bethany Ann Hanson

FOREST CITY — Bethany Ann Hanson, age three months, died Saturday (March 14, 1998) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City, with the Rev. Lee Laaveg of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will take place at Oakland Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation was held from 4-6 p.m. Monday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home.

Bethany Ann was born Dec. 7, 1997, in Mason City.

She is survived by her mother, Jole Hanson, and special friend, Tracy Kenyon, Forest City; father, Scott Marson, Hampton; great-grandparents, Hank and Ruby Hanson, Forest City; great-grand-mother, Pennie Smith, Hampton; maternal grandmother, Michele Swenson, Forest City, grandparents, Jerry and Martha Hanson, Thompson; paternal grandmother, Judy Adams, Indianapolis, Ill.; grandparents, George and Sharon Marson, Mason City; one sister Briana Marson, Forest City; and one brother, Chance Hanson.

CHARLES CITY — Eula (Mrs. Albert) Gerritson, 76, of 2652 155th St., died Monday (March 16, l998) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church, Charles City, with the Rev. Jerry Springston, the former pastor, assisted by the Rev. Martin Miller. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church, Charles City, or Hospice of North Iowa, Charles City.

Eula Maurine Gerritson was born Aug. 22, 1921, at Bristow.

She is survived by her husband, Albert, of Charles City; a son, Gary Gerritson, of Floyd; two grandchildren; and a brother, Max Lines, of Odessa, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and five brothers.

** V. Corrine Gabrielson

ALGONA — V. Corrine Gabrielson, 85, of Algona, died Monday (March 16, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church, UCC, with the Rev. Dennis Secrease officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery, Algona.

Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilson-Harris Funeral Home, Algona, with an Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m.

V. Corrine Gabrielson was born Sept. 19, 1912, in Lyons, Ind.

Survivors include her husband, Glenn, of Algona; a son, Kenyon Gabrielson, of Algona; daughters, Glennda Murphy, of New Hampton; and Joyce Ryan, of Oconomowoc, Wis.; seven grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one grand-daughter.

** W. Edson Dockstader

ST. ANSGAR — W. Edson Dockstader, 68, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday (March 14, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Edward Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Edson (Doc) was born on Dec. 23, 1929, to Wilmer Lot and Caroline (Hansen) Dockstader, in the family home in St. Ansgar.

He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1947 and received his doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1955 from Iowa State University. While at I.S.U., Doc enjoyed playing college football until he was sidelined with a knee injury, and he was a founding member of the Beta Sigma Psi fraternity.

Doc married Becky Marie Gruhn on April 18, 1953, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Following Doc's graduation, they moved to New Orleans, La., where he was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Camp LaRoy Johnson, Port of Embarkation. They returned to St. Ansgar in August of 1957, where he established his veterinary medicine practice.

Doc bred and raised registered Quarterhorses from 1967 through 1992. A lot was learned and much fun was had by family and friends alike at the XD Quarterhorse ranch.

He will be warmly regarded and held close in the hearts of his family and friends as we celebrate his life as a love that will never die.

He is survived by his wife, Becky, of 45 years; six daughters, Chris and her husband, Larry Wadman, of Annandale, Minn.; Julie and her husband, Melvin Schroeder, of St. Ansgar; Mary and her husband, Allen Sommerfeld, of Weilerbach, Germany; Holly and her husband, Rick Schwarck, of St. Ansgar; Kelly and her husband, Sean Shanahan , of Hull, Mass.; and Wendie Dockstader, of Iowa City, Iowa; two sons, Peter Dockstader, of Des Moines, Iowa, and John and his wife, Lisa, Dockstader, of St. Ansgar; 15 grandchildren that will remember his gentleness, kindness and "sweet" generosity; and one brother, Wilmer Beldon and his wife, Geraldine Dockstader, of San Diego, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Winifred Dockstader; and one grand-daughter, Molly Schroeder.

Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, is in charge of arrangements.

** Jerald Eugene Richardson

BRITT — Jerald Eugene Richardson,76, died Monday (March 16, 1998) at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery, Britt, with Mr. Bill Richardson officiating, with Military graveside rites conducted by the V.F.W. and the Britt American Legion.

No visitation will be held. Ewing Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jerald was born Nov. 20, 1921, in Britt.

He is survived by his wife, Lela Richardson, Britt; one sister, Jeanette Dickhuis, Mason City; and one brother, Ralph Richardson, Des Moines.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

** Harry Francis Larkin

ROCKWELL — Harry Francis Larkin, 89, of Rockwell, died Saturday (March 14, 1998) in Orange, Calif.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 1998, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, Mason City, with Bishop Yorgenson officiating. Burial will be in Rockwell Cemetery.

Visitation will be held two hours prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield, is in charge of arrangements.

Harry Francis Larkin was born on Aug. 15, 1908, in Pleasant Hill, Mo., the son of William and Delilah (Fantz) Larkin.

He received his high school education from New Hampton High School. He went on to attend Carter Carburetor School in St. Louis, Mo., and the Coin Electric Industrial School in Chicago, Ill.

He was united in marriage to Nettie Zobeck on Aug. 17, 1936, in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

They made their home in Lourdes, Iowa, where together they ran a gas station and garage before moving to Castalia, Iowa, where they operated a gas station, garage and a tank wagon. At the start of World War II they moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., where he worked as a civilian with the U.S. Government working on Allied Aircraft. They moved to Long Beach, Calif., where he was a head electrician repairing Allied War Ships. Upon moving to Cathedral, Calif., he began working as an electrician before moving to Iowa in 1948 and then returned to Palm Springs, Calif. in 1951.

For the last six years he and his wife have spent the summer with Shirley and Ron in Iowa and in the winter in California with Mavis and John.

Harry enjoyed doing his mechanics work, fishing, reading the Scriptures, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and active in the Church.

He is survived by his wife, Nettie, of Rockwell; two daughters, Mavis Elsey and her husband, John, of Orange, Calif.; and Shirley Meints and her husband, Ron, of Rockwell, Iowa; one brother, Ernest Larkin, of New Hampton, Iowa; three grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; and 18 stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

** Mabel Hatlestad

BANCROFT — Mabel Hatlestad, 93, died Monday (March 16, 1998) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Catholic Church, Bancroft, with the Rev. John Thomas officiating. Burial will take place at St. John Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft.

Mabel was born on Dec. 15, 1904, at Frost, Minn.

She is survived by one sister, Laura Ebert, Brea, Calif.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

** Charles William Hungerford

MANLY — Charles William Hungerford, 55, of Anchorage, Alaska, formerly of Manly, died Saturday (March 14, 1998) unexpectedly in Nome, Alaska.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly, with Pastor Bob Cummings officiating. Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, March 17, in Nome, Alaska.

Evergreen Memorial Chapel in Anchorage, Alaska, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Hungerford was born Nov. 8, 1942, to Mac Willard and Ethel (Hill) Hungerford in Mason City. He graduated from North Central Schools in 1960.

He obtained a chemical engineering degree from Iowa State University in 1964.

He worked at James Ford Bell Lab at General Mills. He served in the Peace Corps in Managua, Nicaragua.

He married Linda Londborg on June 14, 1974. They moved to Duluth, Minn. They later divorced.

He moved to Nome, Alaska, where he was the recreation director, the volleyball coach at NomeBeltz High School. He worked for Outsiders Construction Company where he managed their store.

He moved to Anchorage in 1994, working as a carpenter and selling Ertel toys at the Alaska State Fair.

He loved the summer Olympics and encouraging kids. He was the manager of the Iditarod Basketball Tournament that is held during the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

He is survived by two sisters, Flora Green, of Fremont, Calif., and Grace Hungerford, of Manly.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

** Myrtle ‘Myrt’ Olson

CLEAR LAKE — Myrtle "Myrt" Olson, 90, of 901 Second Ave. S., Apt. 1, Clear Lake, died Tuesday (March 17, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 20, at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jonathan Swenson officiating. Burial will be in Norway Cemetery in Norway, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at WardVan Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Myrtle was born Jan. 21, 1908, in Norway, Iowa, the daughter of Ole S. and Anna Stella Theresa (Hage) Olson. She was the couple’s third oldest among nine children, and the second oldest girl in the family.

She graduated from Norway High School and went on to attend St. Olaf College. She finished her bachelor of arts degree in education at the University of Iowa. She did postgraduate work at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, Drake University, Colorado University and Whittier College in Whittier, Calif.

Myrtle taught school at Conroy and Norway, Iowa, for six years. She came to Clear Lake in 1939 and taught fourth grade at Lincoln Elementary School until 1972.

She loved her fourthgraders and teaching them most of all. She was awarded the Valley Forge Award for excellence in teaching in 1964.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, where she taught Bible school for several years, was a member of the Altar Guild, a circle member Quilter and served on the Education Council twice.

Her hobbies included traveling, knitting, reading, playing bridge, lunching out, and visiting friends and shutins.

Survivors include five sisters: Sylvia Roche, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Opal Krumm, of Oklahoma City, Okla., Ruth Olson and her husband, Bob, of Oklahoma City, Thelma Borg and her husband, Arnold, of Cedar Rapids, and Annie Amosson and her husband, Obie, of Ottumwa, Iowa; a brother, Bernard Olson, of Whittier, Calif.; 11 nieces and nephews; and special friend, Grace Anderson, of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Percy and Arlie Olson.

WILLIAMS — Lorene Mary Butler, 73, of Williams, died Monday (March 16, 1998) at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williams, with the Rev. Raymond Burkle officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the Surls Funeral Home, 206 Main St., in Williams. There will be a parish wake service at 8 p.m. today at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Lorene Mary Butler was born Sept. 10, 1924, on a farm near Blairsburg.

Survivors include her husband, Leo, of Williams; one daughter, Mary Fankhauser, of Williams; and one son, James Butler, of Belmond; four grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; two sisters, Leona Keane, of Williams, and Bernice Brighton, of Ankeny; and two brothers, Robert Smith, of Ellsworth, and Harold Smith, of Dunlap.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

** Melvin Duwane Noling

MASON CITY — Melvin Duwane Noling, 41, of 2420 150th Ave., Donaldson, died Saturday (March 14, 1998) in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until time of services Thursday at the church.

Melvin D. Noling was born March 31, 1956, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Eldon and Cleatus (Martin) Noling. Melvin attended Mason City High School.

Melvin worked as a truck driver transporting goods coast to coast.

Melvin had been in a nursing facility for four years as a result of a head injury sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Melvin was a practical joker who loved teasing people and surprising them. He enjoyed dancing to country and western music, spending time with kids, dogs, horses, fishing and playing pool and cards. He also enjoyed making monster cookies.

Melvin will be missed by his close family and friends.

Family members include one daughter, Shannon Cosgriff, of Thompson; one son, Michael Ferch, of Mason City; his mother and stepfather, Robert G. and Cleatus (Martin) Beal, of Rudd; one sister, Bernice Bellcourt and her husband, Bert, of Waterloo; four stepbrothers and sisters, Dianna, Michael, Roberta and Thomas; his grandfather, William F. Martin, of Motley, Minn.; and stepgrandmother, Laura Beal, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Minda Martin; his father, Eldon E. Noling; and one stepbrother, Gary Beal.

MASON CITY — Florence A. Olson, 91, of the Heritage Care Center, 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Sunday (March 15, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 1998, at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt, with the Rev. David Shogren of Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City, officiating. Florence was cremated at Memorial Park Crematory.

Florence was born Feb. 28, 1907, the daughter of Frank and Carrie (Johnson) Olson in rural Britt. She attended the Britt Community school system.

Florence loved to be outside walking or working in the yard. Whenever possible, she could be heard playing the piano or listening to music.

Florence resided in Garner before moving to the Heritage Care Center in 1993. While living at Heritage, she enjoyed participating in all the activities she could, especially bingo, musical programs and the fellowship. At the beginning of March, she had been named the resident of the month.

Florence is survived by one sister-in-law, Verola Olson of Mason City; three nieces, Ramona and her husband, Russell Hauan, of Mason City, Carlyn and her husband, Roger Miller, of Eagle Point Ore., and Sandra and her husband, John Turner, of Crossroads W. Va.; one nephew, Dick and his wife, Niteya Thompson, of Alexandria, Va., and many other family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant sisters, Florence and Evelyn Olson; two sisters, Emma Thompson and Milda Sallack; two brothers, Oscar and Frank Jr.; and two nephews, Arthur Sallack Jr., and Capt. Robert Olson.

MASON CITY — Opal A. Wood, 90, of 319 29th St. S.W., died Wednesday (March 18, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Opal A. Wood was born March 25, 1907, in rural Rudd, daughter of Lewis B. and Anna B. (Strawn) Kress.

She married Roland Wood on June 18, 1932, in Mason City. He preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 1969.

Opal grew up in the Charles City and Rudd area. She enjoyed watching TV and eating out. She loved to spend time with her family and neighbors.

Survivors include very special friends, J.C. and Betty Lowe, Mason City; two stepsons, Leo Wood and his wife, Iola, Mason City, and Cliff Wood and his wife, Frances, Wallington, N.J.; two special nieces, Marybelle Powers and her husband, Don, Harlington, Texas, and Jackie Prichard, Hoisington, Texas; a sister-in-law, Nora Kress, Charles City; and many other nieces and nephews.

Ken was born in New Hampton. He served in the U. S. Army in Vietnam.

He lived in Mason City from 1978 to 1987. He had also lived in the Hampton and Charles City areas. He had lived in West Des Moines for the last 10 years.

He was a sales supervisor with Source One Sales & Marketing Inc.

He was an active member and past president of the Grocery Manufacturers Association.

** Alford Bowen Gunn

BELMOND — Alford Bowen Gunn, 83, of Belmond, died Tuesday (March 17, 1998) at his home in Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Church of Christ Congregational, Belmond, with the Rev. Cindy Mueller officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery with graveside military rites by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Alford Bowen Gunn was born on May 18, 1914, in Van Buren County, Michigan, to Irwin and Blanche (Bowen) Gunn. He attended the Lake Street School in Kalamazoo, Mich., and later in life, went on to obtain his high school diploma. He was holding various jobs from 1928 to 1941.

He entered the United States Army at Kalamazoo, Mich., in February of 1941, and served during World War II in New Guinea until October of 1945.

On May 5, 1943, Alford married Anna Jane Pass at Camp Howze, Texas. They had three children.

In 1948, Al went back into the service and remained there until he retired on July 31, 1969. He was active in the Army during three conflicts — World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. At his retirement, he had served his country for 26 years. After his retirement from the Army, Al was employed at the Clark Equipment Co. in Battle Creek, Mich. where he worked for 10 years. Alford and Anna Jane moved to Belmond in 1990.

Al's family was always his first priority, and he was a strong Christian. His wife passed away in 1995.

Al truly loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grand-children.

Alford was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge of Richmond, Mo. and also a member of the V.F.W.

He is survived by his daughter, Chryl Hill and her husband, Tom, of Belmond, Iowa; son, Tom Gunn, of Belmond; grandson, Bob Hill and his wife, Melissa, of Belmond; granddaughter, Barbara Meyer and her husband, Jeff, of Corwith; great-grandchildren, Lucas Meyer and Brooklyn Hill; brother, Dayton Gunn and his wife, Doris, of Largo, Fla.; and three sisters, Viola Hezler and her husband, Julius, of Battle Creek, Mich.; Glenora Snyder and her husband, Wes, of Augusta, Mich.; and Erlene Johnson and her husband, Al, of Brooklyn, Mich.

Alford was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Jane Ann; and his wife, Anna Jane, in 1995.

GOODELL — Minnie Larson, 70, of Klemme, died Wednesday (March 18, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Minnie (Ubben) Larson, the daughter of Ben and Carrie (Honken) Ubben, was born July 19, 1927, at Kamrar. She attended country school near Williams, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Charles Larson on June 23, 1953, at the Presbyterian Church in Kamrar, Iowa. They moved to the Goodell area in 1955, and began farming.

She and Charles have been married 44 years, and are members of the United Methodist Church in Klemme.

Surviving are her husband, Charles, of rural Goodell, Iowa; sons, Ron Larson and his wife, Lori, of Mason City, Iowa; Bernard Larson and his wife, Sheryl, of Round Rock, Texas; grandchildren, Bryan Larson, Nathan Larson, and Travis Larson; brother, Edward Ubben and his wife, Mary, of Webster City, Iowa; sisters, Ricksta Davis and her husband, Wayne, of Webster City, Iowa; and Elsie Maples, of Stanhope, Iowa.

Alice Hofbauer was born February 2, 1906, near Lakota, the daughter of Calvin and Alice (Pannkuk) Rippentrop.

She is survived by her husband, Virgil D. ** Philip Jerrell

MASON CITY — Philip Jerrell, 76, of 1838 Springview Drive, died Monday (March 16, 1998) at his home.

Philip Jerrell was born April 18, 1921, in Idaho, the son of Thomas and Louise (Buckman) Jerrell.

The family moved to Nora Springs when he was 8 years old. He received his education at Nora Springs schools.

Philip joined the United States Marines in 1940 and was one of the 90 Marines on Midway Island at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He participated in several island campaigns until the close of the war.

Following his discharge from the Marines, he returned to Nora Springs where he joined his brother in farming. He later worked at Armour Foods for several years.

On September 7, 1968, he married Marjorie Benn of Mason City.

He was a member of the Elks, a lifelong member of VFW, Post #733, Mason City, and a member of St. James Lutheran Church.

He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, and also enjoyed all kinds of sports.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Jerrell, Mason City; one daughter, Cindy Mennenga, and her husband, Loren, Meservey; two brothers, John Jerrell, and his wife, Betty, Tonapa, Nev., and Tommy Jerrell, and his wife, Sue, Clear Water, Fla.; one sister, Nadine Harmon, and her husband, Don, Marshalltown; two stepchildren from his first marriage, Bob Goggen, and his wife, Linda, San Diego, Calif., and Jane Phalen, Mason City; seven step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Helen.

 

** Jerry LeRoy Stoltenberg

MASON CITY — Jerry LeRoy Stoltenberg, 61, of 1633 N. Carolina, died Wednesday (March 18, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Herbert Shafer officiating. Burial will take place at Rockwell Cemetery.

Jerry was born November 29, 1936, in Mason City the son of Virtus and Clara (Rheingans) Stoltenberg.

He attend school in Mason City.

Jerry worked for the Clear Lake Sand & Gravel Co. for 10 years, then worked for the city of Mason City for 29 years. He retired June 1, 1997.

Jerry was a member of the Moose Lodge and loved cars and Ford trucks.

He is survived by one daughter, Pat Klang and her husband Dan, Rockwell; four sons, Tom and JoAnn Stoltenberg, Bloomfield, N.M., Steve and Lori Stoltenberg, Mason City, Scott and Shelly Stoltenberg, Albuquerque, N.M., Jeff and Tricia Stoltenberg, Ladonia, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Rachel, Renee, Ryan, Marino, Jerricka, Kai Ana, Summer, Brock, Alicia, Chanelle, Eric, and Chase; two great-grandchildren, Lucas and Marino Jr., one brother, Richard Stoltenberg, and his wife, Gert, Mason City; and his special friend, Mona Morse, Mason City.

Thelma was born January 18, 1909, in Hampton the daughter of Reuben G. And Elsie M. (Schaer) Hinton.

She graduated from Mason City High School in 1927.

Thelma worked 45 years as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. She retired in 1976.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and enjoyed shopping.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Harmon, and her husband, Charles, of Mason City; one niece, Linda See, and her husband, James, of Mahtomedi, Minn.; one nephew, Richard Harmon, and his wife, Janet, of Ankeny; one aunt, Mona Wallace, Hampton; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

 

** Donna Fae Corbin

GRINNELL — Donna Fae Corbin, 59, died Wednesday (March 18, 1998) at home after a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Grinnell Christian Church.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell.

Memorials may be given in Donna's name to the Grinnell Christian Church, Grinnell Regional Medical Center and the American Cancer Society.

Donna, daughter of H. Donald and Kathryn Lang Larsen, was born on January 13, 1939, in Grinnell. She graduated with honors from Grinnell High School with the class of 1957.

She was united in marriage to Aaron C. Corbin at the Grinnell Christian Church on November 18, 1960. During their early married years they resided in Des Moines and Clinton.

In 1972 they built a home and moved to Oakland Acres Golf Course. Donna was employed in the Pro Shop at Oakland Acres Golf Club from 1977 to 1986.

In 1986 she joined the Human Resource Department at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Her declining health forced her to take a disability retirement in January, l998.

Donna was a charter member of the Grinnell Christian Church and was the first church organist. She was a member of the Women's Fellowship and Circle and the Grinnell Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.

She enjoyed being "Blossum" the clown and making craft projects. She loved spending time with her family. Donna will be remembered for being a Christian example to others, a loving wife and mother, and a great friend to many.

She is survived by her husband, Aaron, of Grinnell; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Ronda Corbin, of Fairfield, Ohio; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Matthew Ver Steeg, of West Des Moines, and Cathy and Terry Fraker, of Lynnville; two grandchildren, Katie Corbin, of Fairfield, Ohio, and Connor Fraker, of Lynnville; two step-grandchildren, Katie and Stephanie Ver Steeg, of Carlisle; her mother, Kathryn Larsen, of Grinnell; one brother, Dale Larsen, of Grinnell; and two sisters, Lucille Green, of Grinnell, and Kay Rader, of Mason City.

Floyd was born November 27, 1907, near Robertson, Hardin County.

He is survived by his wife, Terri Gjerdahl, of Rake, his five children, Raymond Gjerdahl, of Mondovie, Wis., June Marie Gjerdahl, of Hudson, Wis., Misty Gjerdahl, of Buffalo Center, Daniel Gjerdahl and Tabitha Gjerdahl, both of Rake; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Rose Marie Booth and Ann Marie Haugen, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; and three brothers, Mike Gjerdahl, of Owatonna, Minn., Larry Stohr, of St. Paul Park, Minn., and Dave Gjerdahl, of Rake.
