CHARLES CITY —Arnold Rolph, 77, of Charles City, died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

GREENE — Kenneth L. Jackson, 89, died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene.

** Bertha Sophia Ahlf

ST. ANSGAR — Bertha Sophia Ahlf, 96, of St. Ansgar, died Friday (Feb. 27, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Edward Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Ahlf was born Dec. 29, 1901, in Newburg Township, Mitchell County.

She is survived by a sister, Martha Knaak, of St. Ansgar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.

** Larry Joe Grummer

VENTURA — Larry Joe Grummer, 57, of 403 Park Ave., Ventura, died Friday (Feb. 27, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake. The family suggests that memorials may be given in his name.

Larry was born June 18, 1940, in Hampton, the son of Lewis and Mildred (Imerman) Grummer. He graduated from St. Paul Lutheran School and Franklin Consolidated High School in Latimer in 1958.

On May 4, l960, he began working for Ozark Airlines in Clinton. He transferred to Dubuque and continued with the company until joining the U.S. Army.

After the service, he returned to work for Ozark in Dubuque. He transferred to Mason City in December 1965. When Ozark left the Mason City Municipal Airport in 1982, Larry transferred to Des Moines. Ozark was eventually purchased by Trans World Airlines.

On August 19, 1967, he was united in marriage to Janice Marie Hinders at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hampton. The couple made their home in Clear Lake for one year before moving to Ventura.

Larry’s hobbies included hunting, fishing and trapping.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura.

He is survived by his wife, Jan, Ventura; two children, Ronda Prescott and her husband, Steve, Fertile, and Scott Grummer, Iowa City; a grandson, Tyler Prescott, Fertile; a brother, Roger "Butch" Grummer, and his wife, Joyce, Latimer; two sisters, Karen and her husband, the Rev. Albert Buelow, Odebolt, and Kay Sheppard and her husband, Gary, Hampton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

CLEAR LAKE — Albert Holland, 80, of Clear Lake, died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at the Oakwood Care Center.

MASON CITY — Caroline McLennan, 94, of 18550 Killdeer Ave., died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at home.

BRITT — Albert "Buster" Nielson, 83, died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital.

PLYMOUTH — Stanley L. Nicholson, 72, died Saturday, Feb. 28, l998, at home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Fullerton Funeral Home,123 2nd Street S.E., Mason City.

** Zella M. Messersmith

CHARLES CITY — Zella M. Messersmith, 99, of 406 Wright Ave., died unexpectedly early Thursday (Feb. 26, 1998) at her home. She had just celebrated her 99th birthday on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Milwaukee and Hulin streets, with the Rev. J. Larry Vallery, senior pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call from 2-9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Mrs. Messersmith, the former Zella Marie Kellogg, was born Feb. 25, 1899, in rural Charles City, the daughter of Ebert Henry and Ida Mae (Prince) Kellogg.

She attended county school and graduated from Charles City High School in 1917. She then attended the Finley Hospital School of Nursing in Dubuque.

On November 15, l920, she was united in marriage to George Thomas Messersmith in Waterloo. The couple made their home in Charles City, where Zella worked as a registered nurse for the Cedar Valley Hospital for 50 years. She moved to the new Floyd County Memorial Hospital when it was built in 1964. She retired from the hospital and nursing profession in 1969.

Mr. Messersmith died August 2, l97l, in Charles City.

Mrs. Messersmith was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Charity-Peace Circle of the church. She was a member and a past president of American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 174 of Charles City, a past president of the Floyd County American Legion Auxiliary and a charter member of the World War I Auxiliary. She was a member of the former Eastern Star Excelsior Chapter No. 51 and White Shrine of Charles City. For five years, Zella served as a foster grandmother.

Living family members include two children, Eugene and Theresa Messersmith, Ft. Collins, Colo., and Donna and Dr. W. J. Mack, Garner; four grandchildren, Nancy and Greg Ethington, Charles City, Scott Smith, Arboles, Colo., Tamara and James Lucas, Vista, Calif., and Carolyn Werth, Fort Collins, Colo.; five great-grandchildren, Eric and Caryn Wallace of Sioux Falls, S. D., Amy and Rich Childers, Cheyenne, Wyo., Heather Ethington, Charles City, and Jennifer Smith and Troy Smith both of Pagusa Springs, Colo.; and one great-great-grandson, Blake Wallace of Sioux Falls, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three brothers, Ross, Vern, and Ralph Kellogg.

Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 174 Scholarship Fund.

** Mary F. Buck

MASON CITY — Mary F. Buck, 84, of Mason City, formerly of Portland, died Friday (Feb. 27, l998) at the Willow Creek Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E., with the Rev. Michael Schueller of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mary F. Buck was born June 17, 1913, in Kanawha, to Jim and Vera (Markoff) Siskow.

Mary grew up in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in l930.

She married Raymond D. Buck on August 6, 1933, in Nashua.

Mary enjoyed gardening, fishing and being outdoors.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond Buck, Mason City; one son, Robert R. Buck, and his wife, Jane, Bloomington, Minn.; three grandchildren, Steven Buck of Lakeville, Minn., Robert R. Buck of Burnsville, Minn., and Julie Bernick of Savage, Minn.; one sister, Pauline Morse, Denver, Colo.; and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers.

** Wilbert Plagge

LATIMER — Wilbert Herman Henry Plagge, 86, of Latimer, died Friday (Feb. 27, l998) at Ellsworth Community Hospital, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Latimer, with the Rev. James Barge and the Rev. Stan Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Marion Center Cemetery near Latimer.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home in Latimer.

Wilbert Plagge was born July10, 1911, near Latimer.

Survivors include his daughter, Verna, Seven Hills, Ohio, and son, Virgil, Berryville, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, five brothers, four sisters and two infant children.

** Ferne I. Christensen

HAMPTON — Ferne I. Christensen, 76, of Hampton, died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at Franklin General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home with the Rev. David Nelson officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Funeral Home.

Ferne was born July 19, 1921, in Franklin County.

She is survived by a son, William Christensen, Greene; a sister, Marie Denning, Hampton; and three grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and a brother.

** Hazel E. Lee

FORT DODGE — Hazel E. (Mrs. Palmer) Lee, 91, of Fort Dodge, formerly of Manly, died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at Expo Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Gunderson Funeral Home, Fort Dodge, with the Rev. Darrel Kois, pastor of the Calvary Lutheran Church for the Deaf, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Fort Dodge.

Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Gunderson Funeral Home.

Hazel E. Lehmberg was born June 6, 1906, in S.D. She was reared and educated at Soldier and graduated from the Iowa School for the Deaf at Council Bluffs.

She worked as a beautician and was married to Palmer Lee on April 12, 1929 in Mason City.

She was a homemaker and the couple farmed near Manly in Worth County. They moved to Fort Dodge in 1976. Palmer preceded her in death in 1979

She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church for the Deaf in Des Moines, was a past member of the Women of the Moose, and was a charter member of the Eagle Lodge in Mason City.

Hazel is survived by her sons, James Lee, Fort Dodge, and Norman Lee, Bode; a daughter, Patricia Enabnit, Fort Dodge; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Palmer; four grandchildren; one great- great-grandchild; two sisters, and one brother.

** Emma Luecht

SHEFFIELD — Emma Luecht, 92, of Sheffield, formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (March 1, l998) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Mason City. Further arrangements are pending.

** Albert Nielsen

BRITT — Albert "Butch" Nielsen, 83, died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church with the Rev. James A Mattson officiating. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 today at Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, and one hour prior to the church services.

Albert was born April 24, 1914, in Guide Rock, Neb.

He is survived by his wife, Cordelia Nielsen; five sons, Jerry, Wesley, James, Aurora, Ill., Dale, Britt, Ronald, San Diego, Calif., and Roger, Britt; one sister, Marie Jackson, LaVerne; and sixteen grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, and two sisters.

** Frank A. Reinhardt

IOWA CITY — Frank A. Reinhardt, 54, of 421 N. Mt. Vernon Drive, died Saturday morning (Feb. 28, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center following an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Elkader.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service. Memorials may be made to a general fund in his name.

Frank Reinhardt was born August 5, 1943, in Webster City, the son of George and Ethel (Rapp) Reinhardt.

He graduated from Webster City High School; while in high school, he was named an All State football player. He attended the University of Iowa and lettered in football as an Iowa player.

He was united in marriage to Cheryl A. Matt on August 31, l968. The couple made their home in Iowa City, where he was employed by Donaldson Construction for many years.

Most recently, he was employed by Murphy Bros. Construction located in Moline, Ill., as a foreman for various construction projects.

He was an avid Hawkeye football fan; he took interest in the City High football teams and enjoyed learning local history. His greatest love was his family; he was a devoted parent and enjoyed spending time with them.

Frank is survived by his wife, Cheryl, Iowa City; a son, Matt, attending Iowa State University, Ames; a daughter, Meredith, attending the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls; three brothers, Earl, and his wife, Jan Reinhardt, Webster City; Eldon, and his wife, Jackie Reinhardt, Mason City, Dean, and his wife, Colleen Reinhardt, Des Moines; his mother-in-law, Allene Matt, Elkader; sister-in-law, Diane, and her husband, David Synhorst, Princeton Junction, N.J.; brother-in-law, David, and his wife, Jennifer Matt, Cresco; ten nieces and nephews, Chris and Brian Reinhardt, Julie Kay and Holly Reinhardt, Scott, Pat and John Reinhardt, Rachel, John Matt and Michael Synhorst.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Don.

** Caroline K. McLennan

MASON CITY — Mrs. Caroline K. McLennan, 94, of 18550 Kildeer Ave., died Saturday at the home of her granddaughter who had been her caregiver.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Pastor Shane Philpott officiating. Interment will be in the Vilmar Lutheran Cemetery, Vilmar.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Wednesday. The family suggests memorials be forwarded to the Caroline K. McLennan memorial fund.

Caroline was born February 19, 1904, in rural Butler County, the daughter of August and Augusta (Kramer) Schrage.

She was confirmed and baptized at the Vilmar Lutheran Church. She earned her nursing degree in Mason City.

Caroline was known as Grandma Mac to generations of friends and relatives. She was not one to boast about herself, but wanted people to know about Jesus.

Caroline is survived by four sons, Donald McLennan, and his wife, Jane, Marsellies, Ill., Charles McLennan, and his wife, LaVerne, Emory, Texas, Robert McLennan and Paul McLennan, both, Fairfield, Calif; 11 grandchildren, Marsha McLennan, David McLennan, John McLennan, Laurie Behrends, Kathleen McLennan, Joe McLennan, Brad McLennan, Eric McLennan, Karen McLennan, Debbie McLennan, and Lucky McLennan; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, LaVonne Schultz, and husband Al, Nora Springs; and one brother, Norbert Schrage, and his wife Mary Jane, Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; nine brothers, Ernest, Cy, Chris, Paul, August, Eldo, Ferdinand, Sylvan Schrage, and one infant brother; two sisters, Augusta Smedley and Frieda Hildebrand.

** Stanley L. Nicholson

MASON CITY — Stanley L. Nicholson, 72, died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at his family's home in Plymouth under hospice care.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. S.E., with Dean Swenson and Matt Jensen officiating.

Visitation will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. and again Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of service.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Stanley Nicholson Memorial Fund.

Stanley was born Sept. 26, l925, the son of Harry Sr. And Maude (Cobey) Nicholson in Osage. He attended Washington School in Osage.

On Nov. 26, l948, Stanley was united in marriage to Genivive Fox in Mason City. The couple were lifelong residents of the area; Stanley was employed by Armour for 32 years.

Stanley could always be found with a tool in hand ready for his next project and was fascinated with working on old cars when he had the opportunity. When not working on them, he enjoyed looking them over at car shows. He loved his Harley Davidson motorcycles and listening to KCMR on the radio. While he was relaxing, he enjoyed playing with his numerous kitties.

Left to cherish his memory are four sons, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley (Marcia) Nicholson Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Steven (Roxanne) Nicholson, Mr. Rick Nicholson, all of Plymouth, Mr. and Mrs. Randy (Rhonda) Nicholson, Mason City; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Bessman, Mason City; two brothers, Mr. Harry Nicholson Jr., Rudd, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall (Jeanette) Nicholson, Mason City; 13 grandchildren, David, Shawn, Tracy, Robert, Jennifer, Tasha, Matt, Shelby, Wayne, Laura, Jeff, Dennis, Jesse; and two great-grandchildren, Travis and Conner.

Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Maude; wife, Genivive; one son, Kevin; and three brothers, Lewis, Lester, and Harold.

NORA SPRINGS — Ada B. Fredricks, 92, of Nora Springs, died Friday (Feb. 27, 1998) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Nora Springs First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.

CLEAR LAKE — Dorothy M. Murl, 86, of 1204 4th Ave. South, died Sunday (March 1, l998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

RAKE — Gerald M. Quam, 75, of Rake, died Sunday (March 1, 1998), at his home.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center.

** Albert Holland

CLEAR LAKE —Albert Holland, 80, of Clear Lake, died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at the Oakwood Care Center.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner, with Pastor Daniel Bloesch officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery, Northwood.

There will be no visitation; the body was cremated.

Albert Holland was born May 29, 1917, in Northwood to Albert Holland, Sr., and Tillie (Swensrude).

He is survived by a stepson, Peter Holland, La Habra, Calif.; a granddaughter; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, his parents, and a sister.

GREENE — Kenneth L. Jackson, 89, died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gene Burry officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a public scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Kenneth Long Jackson was born Aug. 1, 1908, in Mount Ayr.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of Greene; two daughters, Emelie Koeneman of Waverly, and Linda Beatty of Indianola; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and three brothers.

** William N. Shreve

BRISTOW — William N. Shreve, 86, died Sunday (March 1, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kate Bell officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

William Niles Shreve was born Nov. 20, 1911, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County.

Survivors include his wife, Hermina, of the Liebe Care Center, Greene; three daughters, Vada Winkowitsch of Allison, Kathy Smith of Shell Rock, and Carol Arjes of Greene; two sons, the Rev. Robert Shreve of Jefferson, and Darwin Shreve of Greene; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and one grandson.

CHARLES CITY — Arnold A. Rolph, 77, died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center West, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. J. Larry Vallery officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home, from 12 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and at the church an hour prior to the services Wednesday.

Arnold Alan Rolph was born Sept. 6, 1920, in Charles City.

Living family members include his wife, Esther, Charles City; two sons, Dennis Rolph, Charles City, and Jack Rolph, Waterloo; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; four sisters and one brother.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, and two brothers.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

HAMPTON — Hattie G. Jurgena, 87, died at Franklin General Hospital on Sunday (March 1, 1998).

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Washington Reformed Church in rural Ackley with the Rev. Carl Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in Washington Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Ackley.

Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Hattie was born October 26, 1910, at Cleves, Iowa.

She is survived by her husband, Fred Jurgena, of Hampton; her daughter, Carryl Uhlenhopp, Hampton; her son, Larry Jurgena, Hampton; three sisters, Dena Reints, Parkerburg, Jennie Baskins, Aplington, and Geraldine Uhlenhopp, Allison; one brother, Harold Williams, Aplington; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.

CLARION — Sam Douglas, Jr., 67, died Sunday (March 1, 1998) at the Mary Greeley Medical Center, Ames.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Douglas, Clarion; two brothers, William Douglas Sr., Goldfield, and Richard Douglas, Olathe, Kan.; and two sisters, Rose Douglas, Olathe, Kan., and Betty Ridenhour, Belle, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

CLEAR LAKE — Dorothy Mary Murl, 86, of 1204 Fourth Ave. S., formerly of 117½ 16th St. N.E., Mason City, died Sunday (March 1, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill and Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka concelebrating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Dorothy Mary Murl was born Feb. 7, 1912, at Cedar Rapids, the daughter of John and Nellie (Dunbar) Proscovec.

On Feb. 20, 1932, she married Lyle K. Murl Sr. at Mason City.

She enjoyed fishing and feeding the animals and birds in her yard. She loved visiting her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dorothy will be remembered as a loving and caring person.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City, and a member of the Community Circle of St. Anastasia.

Survivors include one son, Lyle K. Murl Jr. and his wife, Dixie, Longville, Minn.; four daughters, Mary H. Smith, Mason City; Geraldine Klunder and her husband, Robert, Clear Lake; Betty Lou Cheney and her husband, Dale, Mason City; Dorothy Simmons and her husband, Stanley, Mason City; 20 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Jack Proscovec, Mason City; two sisters, Helen Kittleson and Betty Carpenter, both of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle K. Murl Sr., three brothers, and one son-in-law.

** Kenneth L. Jackson

GREENE — Funeral services for Kenneth L. Jackson, 89, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 1998, at the United Methodist Church in Greene with Pastor Gene Burry officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a public Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday at the church one hour before services.

Kenneth Long Jackson was born the youngest of seven children on August 1, l908, in rural Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, to Eugene and Elizabeth (Willey) Jackson, and died Saturday (Feb. 28, 1998) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City, of heart failure.

He was in the dry cleaning business for 65 years, starting in 1926 while attending high school in Boone. He graduated from the School of Laundry and Dry Cleaning and the Ohio Mechanics Institute in Cincinnati.

On Jan. 21, 1938, he was united in marriage to Ruth Helen Plant at the Christian Church in Boone.

Kenny managed a cleaning business in Boone for many years before purchasing Maxson Cleaners in Greene in 1951, which he and Ruth operated for 40 years until his retirement in 1991 at the age of 83.

Kenny was an active and faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Greene. He enjoyed golf, gardening, fishing and other hobbies, especially family activities.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ruth, of Greene; two daughters and their spouses, Emelie and Alvin Koeneman of Waverly, Linda and Jerry Beatty of Indianola; four grandchildren, Brad and his wife, Sue Koeneman of Washington, D.C., Teresa Muskovac of Virginia Beach, Va., Ted Beatty of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Elizabeth Beatty of Canazas, Panama.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Bessie Withers, Christy Conway and Nina Suthern; and three brothers, John, Barry and Grant Jackson.

Harold Charles Tack was born Feb. 2, 1919, near Packard, Dayton Township, Butler County, a son of Jacob and Mary (Hurd) Tack and died Monday (March 2, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center, in Mason City.

He received his education in the rural Dayton Township School and graduated from the Greene High School in 1937.

On March 18, 1941, he was inducted into the United States Army where he served with the 1538 Engineer Service Company in East Indies, New Guinea, Luzon and Papuan, where he was awarded four Bronze Stars and a Presidential Citation. He was honorably discharged on July 12, 1945.

On Feb. 22, 1946, he was united in marriage to Lucille Mae Kuhn at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Following their marriage, they started farming on the Nixt farm northeast of Greene where they remained until 1955, when they moved onto their present farm. Harold was a Pioneer Seed Dealer for 25 years receiving many sales awards from the company. They retired from farming in 1982.

Harold and Lucille enjoyed spending their winters in Sun City and summers camping and going on fishing trips. Lucille died Sept. 20, 1991. That following year, Harold purchased a home and moved into Greene.

He was a lifelong faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greene, where he was an Elder, Trustee, and Sunday School Superintendent. He also served on the School Board and was a 4-H Leader for many years.

Living family members include three sons and their spouses, Dennis and Carol Tack, of Cresco, Jerry and Glenna Tack, of New Richmond, Wis., Duane and Sara Tack of Iowa City; six grandchildren, Dylan, Nathan, Elizabeth, Kevin, Joshua and Jason; one great-grandson, Jacob Tack; one sister, Leatha Belthius, of Welcome, Minn.; and one brother, Darrell Tack, of Greene.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one sister, Velma Brinkman; and one brother, Clarence Tack.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Lois M. Maksen, 81, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at the Orlando Regional Medical Center from injuries in a car accident.

A funeral Mass service was held on Feb. 20, 1998, at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, in Kissimmee. A memorial mass was held on Feb. 28, 1998, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Kenosha, Wis.

Lois Maxine Maksen was born Jan. 29, 1917, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Louis I. and Bertha (Zemke) Walter.

She graduated from Mason City High School in 1935. She attended the Mason City Junior College for one year, then graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Milwaukee, Wis.

On May 10, 1941, she married Leo S. Maksen, in St. Charles, Mo. She was a registered nurse at Kenosha St. Catherine's Hospital then worked as a registered nurse for 20 years at American Motors, retiring in 1982.

She was a past Worthy Matron of the Masonic Lodge in Kenosha and a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kissimmee.

Lois is survived by her husband, Leo, Kissimmee; three sons, Richard "Dick" Maksen and his wife, Judy, Ronald "Ron" Maksen and his wife, Sue, Kenosha, Wis., and William "Bill" Maksen and his wife, Pat, of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho; three sisters, Verona Ufford and Arlene Kasserman, of Kissimmee, Fla., and Vivian Sowles, of Federal Way, Wash.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Walter; an infant sister, Leona; and her sister, Almeda Walter in 1995.

Ada B. Fredricks was born May 15, 1905, at Lehigh, Iowa, the daughter of Tom and Stella (Ewing) Dutcher. The family moved to Fort Dodge and later to Nora Springs.

On May 20, 1922, she married George Fredricks at Mason City.

Ada worked for Paul Artz Dry Goods Store, Nora Springs, for 18 years.

She was a lifelong member of the Nora Springs First United Methodist Church.

Those left to cherish her memory are four daughters, Mrs. Bob (Frances) Kelley, Mrs. Darrel (Wanda) Walker, and Mrs. Bernard (Doris) Fitzgerald, all of Nora Springs; Mrs. James (Marjorie) Rockwell, Ramona, Calif.; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Melvin (Molly) Fredricks, Mason City; and Mrs. Roger (Milly) Fredricks, Stacyville; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; two sons, Melvin "Mully" and Roger; her parents, five brothers and two grandsons.

Emma was born Feb. 17, 1906, in rural Nora Springs, the daughter of George and Dora (Hansen) Christiansen. Emma grew up in rural Rock Falls and graduated from Rock Falls High School.

She married Diedrich F. Luecht on Sept. 23, 1933, in Mason City. That same year they moved to Mason City.

Emma was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Royal Neighbors and LUGA Club.

She is survived by daughter-in-law, Carol Luecht, of Sheffield; three grandchildren, Michael Luecht and his wife, Chantal, of Herndon, Ky., Lori Schmale and her husband, Monty, of Meservey, and Eric Luecht and his wife, Marni, of Phoenix, Ariz.; three great-grandchildren, Derek and Cara Schmale, and Lauren Luecht; one brother, Earl Christiansen, of Minneapolis, Minn.

William Niles Shreve was born Nov. 20, 1911, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, to William Henry and Johana Catherine (Rossen) Shreve; he died Sunday (March 1, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City, of complications from surgery.

He received his education in the Coldwater No. 9 School, and as a young man worked as a feed- grinder operator at the Bristow Elevator.

On Oct. 22, 1934, he was united in marriage to Hermina Jeanette Henning in Bristow.

They later started farming in the Bristow and Greene area until their retirement in 1966 when they moved into Bristow. Following retirement he did various carpentry work and worked for Glen Riggins.

Bill was a devoted father and grandfather who enjoyed being with and doing things with his family. He enjoyed fishing, camping, inventing and making things for his family and friends, including his own boat.

He was baptized and was made a member by profession of faith of the United Methodist Church on June 12, 1977.

Living family members include his loving wife, Hermina, of the Liebe Care Center in Greene; three daughters, Vada Winkowitsch of Allison, Kathy and her husband, Charles Smith of Shell Rock, Carol and her husband, Delvin Arjes of Greene; two sons, Rev. Robert and his wife, Marguerite Shreve of Jefferson, and Darwin and his wife, JoAnn Shreve of Greene; 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

SHEFFIELD — Roy Miller, 69, of Sheffield, died Sunday (March 1, 1998) at the Mercy Hospital, Des Moines.

Roy C. Miller was born on March 20, 1928, in Westfork Township, the son of William and Dessie (Warden) Miller. He attended country school in the Westfork Township area.

He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and also in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

He married Melinda Oldag in October of 1952.

They lived in Chapin and later moved to Sheffield.

Roy worked at the Sheffield Brick and Tile for 44 years and at the Eaton Corp. in Belmond for five years before retiring. Since retiring he had also worked as janitor in the Sheffield-Chapin and the Meservey-Thornton schools whenever he was needed.

Roy enjoyed gardening, working in his yard, walking, visiting with friends, going gambling, supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes and spending time along the Mississippi River.

He was a member of the Sheffield American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Melinda Miller, of Sheffield; three sons, Roy C. (Butch) Miller and his wife, Carol, of Chapin, William Miller and his wife, Mary, of Shakopee, Minn., and James Miller and his wife, Kathy, of Sheffield, Iowa; three daughters, Cindy Koch and her husband, Kent, of Sheffield, Iowa, Christy Wood and her husband, Ray, of Hampton, Iowa, and Louise Miller, of Belmond; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bessie Ann Nutter, of Ogden, Iowa; and Alice Massey and her husband, Robert, of Des Moines; two brothers, Ward Miller and his wife, Wanda, of Sheffield, Iowa, and Gene King and his wife, Vicki, of E. LAUREL, Mont. — Marvin H. Osslund, formerly of Clear Lake, passed away Monday (Feb. 23, 1998) at the Evergreen Care Center in Laurel, Mont.

No service was planned. Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel, Mont., was in charge of cremation.

He was born Nov. 25, 1912, in Mason City.

Marvin lived in Clear Lake from the early 1940's until moving to Montana in September of 1997 to be near his son's family.

He had worked most of his life around Clear Lake as a carpenter.

Marvin is survived by his son, Terry; daughter-in-law, Julie; granddaughter, Julia; stepgrandchildren, Amanda and David; a sister, Leona Penney, of Mason City; and a brother, Norman Osslund, of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Opal E. Gelner was born July 9, 1907, in Joplin, Mo., the daughter of Steven and Maude (Thompson) Gelner. The family moved to Forest City when Opal was 14 years old.

She married LeRoy S. Gelner on Sept. 5, 1928. They farmed near Forest City for about nine years, then moved to Mason City in 1942. Opal was a long-time resident of Mason City and a member of First United Methodist Church.

Her survivors include one son, George S. Gelner, of Mason City; daughters, Joan Bonner, of Swaledale, and Carol Cary and husband, Harold, of Mason City; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, one son-in-law, three sisters and three brothers.

** Emma M. Ruzicka

CHARLES CITY — Emma M. Ruzicka, 93, 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home, and formerly of 1110 Hildreth St., Charles City, died Tuesday (March 3, 1998) at the nursing home following a lengthy illness.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, U.S. Highway 18 and Clark Street, Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Roseville, rural Marble Rock.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with a 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service, followed by the rosary. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Emma Mae Ruzicka was born Nov. 5, 1904, on the family farm in rural Marble Rock.

Survivors include a brother and sister, Anthony and Alvina Ruzicka, both of rural Marble Rock.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

** Hattie G. Jurgena

HAMPTON — Hattie G. Jurgena, 87, died on Sunday (March 1, 1998) at Franklin General Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the Washington Reformed Church in rural Ackley with the Rev. Carl Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in Washington Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Ackley.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Hattie was born October 26, 1910, at Cleve.

She is survived by her daughter, Carryl Uhlenhopp, Hampton; her son, Larry Jurgena, Hampton; two sisters, Jennie Baskins, Aplington, and Geraldine Uhlenhopp, Allison; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.

** Lois M. Maksen

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Lois M. Maksen, 81, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at the Orlando Regional Medical Center from injuries of a car accident.

A funeral Mass service was held on Feb. 20, 1998, at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, in Kissimmee. A memorial mass was held on Feb. 28, 1998, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Kenosha, Wis.

Lois Maxine Maksen was born Jan. 29, 1917, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Louis I. and Bertha (Zemke) Walter.

She graduated from Mason City High School in 1935. She attended the Mason City Junior College for one year, then graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Milwaukee, Wis.

On May 10, 1941, she married Leo S. Maksen in St. Charles, Mo. She was a registered nurse at Kenosha St. Catherine’s Hospital then worked as a registered nurse for 20 years at American Motors, retiring in 1982.

She was a past Worthy Matron of the Masonic Lodge in Kenosha and a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kissimmee.

Lois is survived by her husband, Leo, Kissimmee; three sons, Rickard "Dick" Maksen and his wife, Judy, Ronald "Ron" Maksen and his wife, Sue, Kenosha, Wis., and William "Bill" Maksen and his wife, Pat, of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho; three sisters, Verona Ufford and Arlene Kasserman, of Kissimmee, Fla., and Vivian Sowles, of Federal Way, Wash.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Walter; an infant brother, Wayne, an infant sister, Leona; and her sister, Almeda Walter in 1995.

MASON CITY — Maude J. Stackhouse, of 233 Seventh Street N.W., died Wednesday (March 4, 1998) at Urbandale Healthcare Center, Urbandale.

The funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 4 p.m. and a scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m.

DUMONT — Mae Reed, 96, died Tuesday (March 3, 1998) at the Dumont Care Center.

Mae Reed was born February 16, 1902, in Franklin County.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY — Mary M. Somers, 82, formerly of 1220 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, died Wednesday (March 4, 1998) at the I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. David Beckman of Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel until time of services.

Mary M. Somers was born June 12, 1915, in Mason City, daughter of Tony and Pauline (Matranga) Vicari.

She married Harold Somers on Sept. 18, 1935, at Central Park in Mason City.

Mary grew up in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School. She cooked part time at various businesses. Mary enjoyed playing bingo and bridge, crocheting and reading. She volunteered many years at Mercy Hospital and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Survivors include five children, Dennis Somers and his wife, Karen, Clearwater, Fla., Janice Lewis and her husband, Tom, Mason City, Barbara Schmidt, Mason City, Jerry Somers and his wife, Mary, Aurora, Colo., and Steve Somers, Mason City; one sister-in-law, Lucile Vicari, Pollock Pines, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, and one sister.

** Betty I. Pinneke

CLEAR LAKE — Betty I. Pinneke, 73, of 1300 First Ave. S., Clear Lake, died Monday (March 2, 1998) at the Monahans Hospital, Monahans, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, Iowa, with the Rev. Fred Lewis, officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, Iowa, and will continue after 9 a.m. Friday until one hour prior to services where it will continue at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Betty I. Pinneke Memorial Fund.

Betty was born Dec. 2, 1924 in Sheffield, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Martha (Hartman) Smith. She attended school in Sheffield.

Betty lived in Mason City and Clear Lake most of her life. She lovingly raised six children.

She enjoyed reading, sewing, doing crafts, driving the back country roads and traveling to be with her family and friends. Betty was known for going out of the way to help her family and friends. She will be sadly missed.

Betty is survived by seven children, Verna Michl and her husband, Ken, Monahans, Texas; Lillie Keith and her husband, Dennis, Clear Lake, Iowa; Elmer Pinneke and his wife, Minerva, Haysville, Kan.; Betty Hanes and her husband, Robert, Waterloo, Iowa; Roger Pinneke, Omaha, Neb.; Robin Robinson, Burlington, Iowa, and Martha Walgreen and her husband, Stewart, Cedar Falls, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, Sid Bishop, Dawn Bishop, Carlos Pinneke, Dianna Pinneke, William Pinneke, Rahjee Pinneke, Terrance Pinneke, Nikkia Pinneke, Leola I. Hanes and Robert I. Hanes; one great-granddaughter, Jesseca Bishop; also several cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

** Duane A. Slining

BELMOND — Duane A. Slining, 74, of Belmond, died Wednesday (March 4, 1998) at Belmond Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Reformed Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Robert Ford, officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Reformed Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Duane A. Slining was born Dec. 2, 1923, in Belmond.

BUFFALO CENTER — Gloriann Tena Brue, 61, of Buffalo Center, died Tuesday (March 3, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, Forest City, with the Rev. George Kalb, officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Winter Funeral, Buffalo Center, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Gloriann Tena Brue was born Feb. 4, 1937 on a farm near Titonka.

Survivors include her husband, LaVerne, of Buffalo Center; four children, David Brue, of Buffalo Center; Carolyn Legried, of Plymouth, Minn.; Mary Beth McEuen, Chesterfield, Mo.; and Diane Matson, of Buffalo Center; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Shirley Meyer, of El Paso, Texas; and one brother, Roger Tjarks, of Titonka.

WESLEY — Richard Calvin Hammond, 95, of Wesley, died Wednesday (March 4, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center, Algona.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wesley, with the Rev. Cecil H. Friedmann, officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 2:30 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Wesley, with a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 3 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Richard Calvin Hammond was born March 20, 1902 in Glenwood, Minn.

Richard is survived by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers, and three sisters.
