** Patricia A. Hoffarth

PLENTYWOOD, Mont. — Memorial services for Patricia A. Hoffarth will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church-UCC in Plentywood, with interment of cremated remains at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, at Plymouth Cemetery, Plymouth, Iowa. Patty, 70, died Thursday (Aug. 12, 1998) at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood.

Patty was born on May 4, 1928, in Plentywood, the daughter of Frank and Nellie (Goodman) Fishbeck. She graduated from Plentywood High School in 1946, and married Jake Hoffarth on Nov. 1, 1948, in Great Falls, Mont. They lived in Plentywood until 1953, when they moved to Grafton, Iowa, where they farmed until 1968. They then moved to Plymouth where they owned and ran a bar and grill. In 1987, they moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where they remained until they returned to Plentywood on May 1, 1998.

Patty's greatest loves in life were her husband, her five children, her sister and brother and her grandchildren, playing the piano (which she did throughout her life) and selling jewelry, which she did for 17 years.

Patty had a multitude of friends and loved life and people. She is survived by her husband, Jake, of Plentywood; her daughter, Dawn Lovstad of Phoenix; her son, Ranny Hoffarth of Sedona, Ariz.; her son, Gib Hoffarth of Crescent; her daughter, Edie Prazak of Grafton; her daughter, Darcee Hoffarth of Grafton; her foster daughter, Joany Holmes of Grafton; and eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by her brother, Frank Fishbeck of Kent, Wash.; and her sister, Marilyn Dawn Fishbeck of Plentywood.

Patty was preceded in death by her parents and her grandparents, Frank and Nell Fishbeck, whom she lived with after her father's death.

Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood is in charge of arrangements.

** Dick E. Adams

MASON CITY — Dick E. Adams, 70, of 248 20th St. S.E., died Friday (Aug. 14, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery with John L. Ayers, Hospice chaplain, officiating.

There will be no visitation, Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Dick was born April 9, 1928, at Lake City, the son of William and Lottie (Prickett) Adams. He attended school in Lake City and Webster City, and graduated from Mason City High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years.

Dick was married to Bonnie Richardson in Mason City in January, 1951. He worked for Lyons Laundry and Coca-Cola, and for close to 30 years he was a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and of the V.F.W.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Adams of Mason City; sons Michael Adams and his wife, Jody, Mark Adams and Jeffrey Adams, all of Mason City; grandchildren, Cassie, Sara, Kris, Dustin, Jordan, Zachery and Taylor; mother-in-law, Florence Richardson of Mason City; sister-in-law, Pat Loving and husband, Bob, of Dallas, Texas; two aunts; and three nieces, one nephew and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his aunt and uncle, Lee and Stella Jackson.

** Virginia Ellen Lemmermann

ST. ANSGAR — Virginia Ellen Lemmermann, 69, died on Friday (Aug. 14, 1998) near Mona as the result of a traffic accident.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ted Stowers and the Rev. Robert Lemmermann officiating.

Funeral services also will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Friends Meeting for Worship, Whittier. Burial will be at the Friends Cemetery, Whittier.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia was born on June 19, 1929, in Springville, to John Pierson and Edna Ellen (Willets) Williams. She attended Scattergood Friends School, William Penn College and the University of Northern Iowa.

Virginia married Robert William Lemmermann on Aug. 31, 1959, in Whittier. She affiliated with the United Methodist Church and the Society of Friends (Cons.). She was a member of IC Club, Garden Club and United Methodist Women and served as president of the Library Board.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Lemmermann of St. Ansgar; one son, Edward Andrew Lemmermann and his wife, Jackie Lynn, of Mankato, Minn.; one daughter, Janet Ellen Lemmermann of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Thomas Edward and Alex James Lemmermann; three brothers, John Robert Williams of Whittier, Arthur Leslie Williams of Marshalltown and Howard Williams of Greensboro, N.C.; and one sister, Margaret Williams Stevens of Bartlesville, Okla.

** Jonathon Craig Nelson

BELMOND — Jonathon Craig Nelson, 2-day-old infant son of Patrik and Ann Nelson, died Friday (Aug. 14, 1998) at University Hospitals, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. John Murray officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Tenold Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Other funeral arrangements are incomplete.

** Truman Ask

OSAGE — Truman Ask, 92, died Saturday (Aug. 15, 1998) at the Faith Home.

** Raymond W. 'Budd' Gallagher

LAKE MILLS — Raymond W. "Budd" Gallagher, 83, died Friday (Aug. 14, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeanne Martin officiating. Interment will be in the Bohemian Section, Plymouth Cemetery, Plymouth.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to Asbury United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Raymond W. "Budd" Gallagher was born Oct. 14, 1914, on a farm near Jamestown, N.D., the son of John and Violet (Miller) Gallagher.

He farmed with his family in North Dakota until 1936, at which time he moved to Mason City. He married Annabelle Chehock on July 20, 1941, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Plymouth while Budd served in the Army overseas in World War II from 1943-1946.

After returning home from the service, he was employed at the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Mason City for 10 years, then managed the Burchinal Coop Elevator from 1948-1968. He then moved to Lake Mills and managed the Farmer's Coop Elevator until retirement in 1979.

He served as director on the Farmers Grain Dealers Board in Des Moines. After retirement he and his wife did volunteer work for V.O.C.A. (Volunteer Organizations Cooperatives Association) in Bangkok, Thailand, and Cor De Voire, Africa.

Bud was a 50-year member of the American Legion, long-time member of the Lake Mills Lions Club and enjoyed distributing mints to the local businesses. He served on the Winnebago County Food Bank and volunteered delivering Meals On Wheels.

He was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church for many years, serving on various committees.

He was a lifetime baseball fan and always enjoyed telling a good joke and visiting with people along with taking great pride in his Irish heritage.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Annabelle, of Lake Mills; three children, Craig and his wife, Marcedes, of Iowa Falls, Susan Gallagher of Iowa City and Jay and his wife, Christine, of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Gallagher) Murra, Melissa Gallagher and Sean Patrick Gallagher; three brothers, Nyle and his wife, Alma, of Jamestown, N.D., Delmer and his wife, Hilda, of Bismark, N.D., and Jack of Portland, Ore.; three sisters, Velva Stone of Seattle, Wash., Velzora and her husband, Kenneth Wilson, and Dorothy and her husband, Blaine Cardon, all of Puyallup, Wash.; along with many nieces and nephews.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

** Beverly J. Mason

MASON CITY — Beverly J. Mason, 51, died Friday (Aug. 14, 1998) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Other funeral arrangements are incomplete.

** Opal Mae Heard Chancellor

ST. ANSGAR — Mae Chancellor, 74, died Friday (Aug. 14, 1998) in a two-vehicle collision near Mona that also killed her friend, Virginia Lemmermann, and injured her sister-in-law, Mary Chancellor, of St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ted Stowers officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mae Chancellor was born on a farm east of Carpenter in 1923. The daughter of Madge (Goff) and Walter Heard, she graduated from Carpenter High School in 1941. She graduated from Mason City Junior College in 1943, and started a teaching career that spanned 28 years. She received her B.S. degree from Upper Iowa University in Fayette in 1971.

On Aug. 25, 1946, Opal Mae Heard married Robert Hickle Chancellor, and the couple lived in the St. Ansgar area until Mr. Chancellor's death in 1990.

Mae was baptized and confirmed in the St. Ansgar Methodist Church by the Rev. Henry Allshouse in 1936. She remained active in her church throughout her life, serving as church organist, long-time president of the United Methodist Women, Morning Circle member and as a Sunday school teacher. She was a 50-year member of I.C. Club and her church choir.

She was an active community member, having served as a Girl Scout leader, a president of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the Nissen Library Board and as a volunteer choir leader for residents of the Good Samaritan Center.

Her parents and her husband as well as two brothers-in-law preceded her in death: Richard Chancellor of St. Ansgar, Duane Burton of Seattle and her sister-in-law, Irma Chancellor of Nevada.

Her two daughters survive her, Martha Chancellor and her husband, Denis Boerjan, of St. Ansgar, and Margaret Chancellor Caldwell and husband, Randy, of Newton; as well as her sister, Elizabeth Heard Burton of Seattle, Wash. Mae Chancellor's grandchildren are Katie and Ann Pleggenkuhle of St. Ansgar and Betsy and Bob Caldwell of Newton. Her sister-in-law, Mary Chancellor, is in critical condition in St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

** Robert Steele

SHEFFIELD — Robert Steele, 71, died Saturday (Aug. 15, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roy Hjelmaas of Clear Lake officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Grarup Funeral Home.

Robert Steele was born Sept. 28, 1926, in rural Rockwell, the son of Harvey and Gail (Mulford) Steele. Bob graduated from Sheffield High School in 1944. He enlisted in the United States Navy in September of 1944, serving as a radio operator until his honorable discharge in June of 1946.

Upon his return to Sheffield, he worked at Sheffield Brick and Tile and for the railroad until entering barber school in Des Moines. Bob was a barber in Sheffield and Mason City for over 25 years.

Bob was united in marriage to Gladys Mae Stoffer on April 11, 1948, in the EUB Church parsonage in Sheffield by the Rev. Miller. They spent their entire adult lives in Sheffield, a community they both loved. In his younger years, Bob enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling and dancing at the Surf. He had a passion for playing golf, but his greatest love was spending time with his family. Bob always held a strong faith, had a positive outlook on life and had a ready smile.

Bob was a member of the Sheffield Community Club, Sheffield Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. He was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church of Sheffield.

He is survived by two daughters, Teresa Yelland and her husband, Jeff, of Centerville, and Kim Wright and her husband, Joel, of Perry; one son, Craig Steele of Adel; three grandchildren, Josh Yelland, Nandy Steele and Kaleb Wright; and one sister, Gladys Rurup of Rockwell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one infant brother and his older brother.

** Evelyn Lavone (Evie) Holmes

MASON CITY — Evelyn Lavone (Evie) Holmes, 61, of 2514 S. Federal Ave., died Thursday (Aug. 13, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Old Stone United Methodist Church, 508 Carter Street, Rock Falls, with the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Evelyn Holmes was born May 22, 1937, in Mason City, the daughter of Roy and Geraldine (Tantow) Ward. Evelyn attended and graduated from Rock Falls High School in 1954. She married Arthur (LeRoy) Holmes on June 10, 1954.

She devoted her early years to raising her children. Evie became a nurses aide and had worked at Mercy Health Center for the past 18 years. She enjoyed working with her friends on 4 West. Evelyn loved to go camping, boating and dancing and sitting in her flower garden. Some of her best memories were in the company of her children and grandchildren.

Evelyn will be sadly missed by her children: son Tom Holmes and his wife, Joany, of rural Plymouth; daughter Debbi Meacham and her husband, Jay, of rural Plymouth; son Chuck Holmes and his wife, Tonya Trenary, of St. Ansgar; daughter Susie Brandau and her husband, Bruce, of rural Rudd; son Matt Holmes and his wife, Julie, of Grafton; grandchildren, Blayne and Haley Holmes, Mike, Dan and Angela Berding, Holly, Joshua and Ryley Holmes, Taylor Trenary, Tom, Tim and Travis Brandau, and Dori and Kimberly Holmes; a sister, Delores Lathrop and her husband, Allen, of Mason City; a brother, LaRoy Ward and his wife, Debbie, of Mason City; a special friend, Bud Fisher; and Patches, as well as many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, Steven Murray Holmes, in 1984; the children's father, LeRoy Holmes; her parents; and one brother, Dale Ward.

** C. Clarence Smith

IOWA FALLS — C. Clarence Smith, 91, died Friday (Aug. 14, 1998) at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Paul Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Surls Funeral Home.

Memorials should be directed to the Congregational Church.

C. Clarence Smith was born Nov. 16, 1906, in rural Alden.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Iowa Falls; three sons, Ron Smith of Vancouver, Wash., David Smith of Des Moines and James Smith of Mason City; one sister, Marguerite Wilbur of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

** Clemence 'Clem' Meyerhofer

OSAGE — Clemence "Clem" Meyerhofer, 75, died Saturday (Aug. 15, 1998) at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
