** Irma H. Whitnable

MASON CITY — Irma H. Whitnable, 81, of 643 Fourth St. N.E., died Friday (July 31, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Assembly of God, 1301 N. Carolina Ave.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.

MASON CITY — Marshall E. Brown, 89, of 522 16th St. S.E., died Friday (July 31, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

BELMOND — Edith B. Hill, 100, of Belmond, died Friday (July 31, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond.

** Edward Frank Bruning

ALGONA — Edward Frank Bruning, 82, of Algona, died Thursday (July 30, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Algona, with the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 until 9 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, with a 3 p.m. parish rosary and a 7:30 p.m. parish prayer service.

Edward Frank Bruning was born April 23, 1916, in St. Benedict.

He is survived by one niece, Mary Lou Schmidt, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and five sisters.

** Vincent J. Neu Sr.

BETTENDORF — Vincent J. Neu Sr., 94, a resident of Bettendorf, will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 417 N. Main St., Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.

Visitation will held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main St., Davenport, with a 7 p.m. rosary.

Mr. Neu died Friday (July 31, 1998) at the Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.

Mr. Neu entered the automobile business in October 1930. In 1944, he became an Oldsmobile dealer and operated at several sites in downtown Davenport. In 1960, he consolidated the operations at 35th and Brady Street. In 1997, after 67 years in the automobile business, Mr. Neu retired and sold his Davenport dealership to the John Keady Superstore.

Vincent J. Neu was born May 31, 1904, in Charlotte, Iowa, the son of Peter and Mary Ann (Determan) Neu.

He married Marie Hayes on Jan. 12, 1931, in Forest City, Iowa. She preceded him in death in 1967. He then married Jean Detweiler in 1968 in Roseville, Calif.

Mr. Neu served as vice-president and president of the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association and president of the Scott County Dealers Association. He was a past member of the Davenport Country Club, Outing Club, Davenport Club, Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club and the Davenport Chamber of Commerce.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Anthony’s Church, CASI (Center for Aging Services) or a charity of your choice.

Survivors include his wife, Jean, of Bettendorf; children, Eileen Holm, of East Moline, Ill., Karen Dondanville, of Moline, Ill., and Vincent Neu Jr., of Rock Island, Ill.; two sisters, Catherine Hughes and Margaret Patterson, both of Mason City; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, Sylvester and Kenneth; a sister, Lillian; a daughter, Sheila Murphy; and a great-granddaughter, Elise Dondanville.

** Harlys Arlene Field

NORA SPRINGS — Harlys Arlene Field, 75, of rural Nora Springs, died Thursday (July 30, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Ave., rural Osage, with the Rev. Thomas Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, and one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.

Harlys Arlene (Huebner) Field was born Jan. 11, 1923, near Plymouth, the daughter of Herbert and Birdie (Paulson) Huebner.

Harlys was baptized on Feb. 25, 1923, and confirmed her faith on March 21, 1937, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, in Grafton, by the Rev. Carl Landdeck.

She attended country school at Union No. 7 in Worth County and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1941. During her teens, she was a member of the West Cedar Sunbeams 4-H Club.

She attended Luther College in Decorah following high school and taught in rural schools in Worth and Mitchell counties.

On Oct. 14, 1945, she married Irving Field and since then she has been a member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church.

She was a member of various church groups, taught Sunday School and was in the Mary Circle RCCW and the Lydia Mission Circle.

Harlys enjoyed her family, including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and wants them to remember Jesus as their very best friend. Her confirmation verse is from Acts 4:12: "Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

She is survived by her husband, Irving Field, of Nora Springs; one son, Allan Martin Field and his wife, Kay, of Nora Springs; two daughters, Ann Louise Schallock and her husband, Alan, of Floyd, and Ronda Lou Smith and her husband, Scott, of Mason City; one sister, Shirley Vikturek and her husband, Everett, of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Schallock) Broton, Aaron Schallock, Katherine Schallock, Tana Field, Lonna Field, Levi Smith and Logan Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Gabriele Broton and Serena Broton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, one sister, Harriet Alene; and one brother, Glen.

** Tanner J. Pals

LATIMER — Tanner J. Pals, of Latimer, died Wednesday (July 29, 1998) from injuries incurred from a motorcycle accident at Harbor View Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, at the age of 16.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at the CAL High School gymnasium in Latimer, with the Rev. Michael Ploeger, from the Zion Reformed Church of Sheffield, officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Reformed Cemetery, Sheffield.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at the Willim Funeral Home in Latimer.

Tanner Jurgens Pals was born April 22, 1982, at the Belmond Community Hospital in Belmond, Iowa. He would have been a junior at CAL Community Schools. He was active in football, basketball, baseball, golf, music and speech. He was also an active member of the Zion Reformed RCYF and choir. He was a Globe-Gazette carrier for four years.

Tanner had many friends and loved spending time with family. He also loved golfing and spending time playing other sports.

He is survived by his mother, Sonna, and husband, Dick McMahon, of Latimer; his father, Jeffrey Pals, and wife, Mary, of Hawarden; one brother, Tjaden, of Seattle, Washington; one sister, Arika, of Latimer; one stepsister, Jessica Harvey, of Iowa City; one stepbrother, Jonathan Harvey, of Waterloo; and grandfathers William Jurgens, of Latimer, and Leslie Pals and his wife, Maureen, of Mason City.

His grandmothers, Audrey Jurgens and Norma Pals, preceded him in death.
