Effie Retterath

 

STACYVILLE — Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Visitation Catholic Church, for Effie Retterath, 84, of Stacyville, who died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 1997) at the Austin Medical Center, Austin, Minn.

The Rev. Joseph Schneider will officiate and burial will be in Visitation Church Cemetery.

Visitation at the church in Stacyville will begin at 2 p.m. today with a rosary at 3 p.m. and a Scripture wake service at 7 p.m.

Champion Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

Effie Retterath was born April 30, 1913, at Parkersburg.

Survivors include six daughters, Rosann Meyer, Austin, Minn.; Phyllis Retterath, Janesville; Bev Theobald, Stacyville; Dorothy Crooks, Rudd; Mary Crooks, Charles City, and Martha Hoevet, Stacyville; three sons, Jim Retterath, Austin, Minn.; Joe Retterath, Eagen, Minn., and Gene Retterath, Grafton; 37 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and 12 brothers and sisters.

 

Herbert Santee

DUMONT — Herbert Santee, 90, of Dumont, died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at the Dumont Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in the Hitesville Cemetery, rural Aplington.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Herbert Santee was born Nov. 23, 1906, in Kesley.

Survivors include his wife, Velma Santee, of Dumont; two daughters, Lois Gallope of Dumont, and Lila LaRue of Spooner, Wis.; one sister, Rosella Wubbena of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one grandson, six brothers and one sister.

 

Judi Wahl

MASON CITY — Judi Wahl, 51, of 317 15th St. N.W., died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where other arrangements are incomplete.

 

Ethel A. Swyter

KANAWHA — Ethel A. Swyter, 84, of Kanawha, died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at the Kanawha Community Nursing Home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Ewing-Dugger Funeral Chapel.

 

 

Beatrice G. Robinson

GARNER — Beatrice G. Robinson, 75, of Garner, formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Oct. 17, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Herb Shafer officiating. Interment will be in the Williamette National Cemetery, Portland, Ore.

There will be no visitation; the body was donated to the University of Iowa. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Beatrice G. Robinson was born Nov. 23, 1921, in Tama.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Shirley Marlow of Mason City; two nephews, George Marlow and Jim Marlow; and four nieces, Maureen Leake, Ann Dirks, Marge Benson and Jeannie Conrad.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, three sisters and five brothers.

 

 

George Garza Gleason

MASON CITY — George Garza Gleason, 74, of 1316 N. Washington Ave., died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services are tentatively set for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Friday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with a Scripture service at 7 p.m.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.

 

Wilma Allen

CLARION — Wilma Allen, 85, of Clarion, died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Kellogg officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 3 p.m. Friday at the Willim Funeral Home, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Wilma Allen was born June 24, 1912, in Windom, Minn.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene, of Clarion; one daughter, Martha Elston of Ames; two sons, Thomas of St. Louis, Mo., and Michael of Bloomington, Minn.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

 

Norman Thomas Osler

MASON CITY — Norman Thomas Osler, 59, of 26 Fifth St. N.E., Mason City, died Monday (Nov. 3, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. Douglas Anderson of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be held in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Norman Thomas Osler was born June 14, 1938, in Mason City.

Survivors include two sisters, Shirley Sage of Mason City, and Barbara Osler of Elkader; and one brother, Leslie Osler of Elkader.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.

 

 

Grace Irene Shannon

DUMONT — Grace Irene Shannon, 87, of Dumont, died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 1997) at the Dumont Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Dumont United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marilyn Winch officiating. Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery, rural Dumont.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home.

Grace Irene Shannon was born Oct. 22, 1910, in Dumont.

Survivors include two sisters, Kathleen White of Aredale and Enitha Deere of Bettendorf.

She was preceded in death by her parents, foster parents, two husbands, one brother, three sisters and three half-brothers.

MASON CITY — Caroline "Carol" Tool, 93, of 829 Sixth St. S.W., died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

THOMPSON — C.E. Judd, 88, of Thompson, died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at his home.

CORWITH — E. Lucille Miller, 92, of Corwith, died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 1997) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Linda Hansen-Bibb officiating. Burial will be in the Corwith Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. The Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

There are no immediate survivors.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Margaret Starr Maynard Middleton

COPPERAS COVE, Texas — Margaret Starr Maynard Middleton, 81, died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at a Copperas Cove nursing center.

The body was cremated. Burial will be at Mason City, Iowa, at a later date.

Margaret was born, Jan. 21, 1916, in Mason City, Iowa. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Paul E. Middleton, Jr. of Copperas Cove, Texas; one son, Paul E. Middleton III of Akron, Ohio; one daughter, Veronica Ott of Corona, Calif.; one sister, Patricia Shultz of Mesa, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Patrick Middleton, Jackie Middleton Rowan, Tom Olson and Sara Olson; and two great-grandchildren, Cailyn Mariah Geneva Rowan and Corryn Alana Rowan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vera A. McKee Maynard and Ronald Maynard.

 

Margaret M. Wolf

CHARLES CITY — Margaret M. Wolf, 90, of 408 Fifth Ave., died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. J. Larry Vallery, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. today until service time.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa or Trinity United Methodist Church, both of Charles City.

Margaret Marcelia Wolf was born March 23, 1907, in Charles City.

Survivors include several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

 

Charles Edward Judd

TOMPSON — C.E. "Ed" Judd, 88, died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at his home in rural Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church with the Rev. Perry Fruhling officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Military honors will be conducted by the Thompson Veterans Color Guard.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church.

Charles Edward Judd was born March 17, 1909, in Greene County.

He is survived by his wife, Theo of Thompson; three daughters, Harriet Morgan of Thompson, Marjory Solberg of Forest City and Judith Erickson of Copper Mountain, Colo.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Underwood of Boone; and one brother, Robert Judd of Urbana, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister and a grandson.

 

Ethel A. Swyter

KANAWHA — Ethel A. Swyter, 84, of Kanawha, died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. G. David Daley officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ewing Dugger Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.

Ethel was born Dec. 10, 1912, in Ulster Park, N.Y.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald L. Swyter of Kanawha; two stepsons, Marvin Swyter of Fort Madison and Gary Swyter of San Dimas, Calif.; one sister, Ruth Sasser of Prescott, Ariz.; five stepgrandchildren; and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, one brother and two stepgreat-grandsons.

 

 

Philip Edward Olson

CLARION — Philip Edward Olson, 51, of Clarion, died Thursday (Nov. 6, 1997) at Community Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gary Boen officiating. Military rites will be conducted at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 3 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Willim Funeral Home.

Philip was born Jan. 15, 1946, at Hampton.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanie of Clarion; two sons, Steven Jergenson of Clear Lake and Jeff Jergenson of Olathe, Kan.; three daughters, Wendy Conley of Webster City, Lanette Watts of Clarion; and Linda Schmitt of Mill Creek, Wis.; seven grandchildren; his mother, Audrey Olson of Clarion; one brother, Paul Olson of Woolstock; and two sisters, Janet Severson of Hubbard and Janel Stark of Clarion.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Mardel A. Nonnweiler

WEBB CITY, Mo — Mardel A. Nonnweiler, 77, of Webb City, formerly of Forest City, Iowa, died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at St. John’s Medical Center in Joplin.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Forest City, Iowa, with the Rev. Sharon Worthington officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery, Forest city, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City, Iowa.

Mardel was born in Fertile, Iowa, on Nov. 22, 1919, the daughter of Edward and Leora (Roath) Nelson. She received her education in Forest City and graduated from Forest City High School in 1937. She was married to Clair Nonnweiler on Jan. 24, 1932. The couple lived for many years in California. Clair died in 1974.

Mardel has worked for Beal's Cleaners, Hunt's Food and Knotts Berry Farm, from which she retired in 1980. In the spring of 1997 she moved to Webb City to be nearer her children.

She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Moore of Oronogo, Mo.; three sons, Donald of Orange, Calif.; Paul of Tyrone, Ga., and Douglas of Webb City, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clair, and one sister.

 

Judi Wahl

Visitation will be held form 4 to 8 p.m. today and until time of services on Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Judi Wahl was born Oct. 2, 1946, the daughter of William and Darlene (Anderson) Baum in Mason City. Judi attended Mason City Schools and worked in the office at the Salvation Army. Judi married Arthur Wahl on Feb. 20, 1981, in Fostoria, Ohio. Judi was a member of the Salvation Army, she was a Hospice Volunteer and was instrumental in the starting of the SHARE program in Mason City.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur Wahl of Mason City; her parents, William and Darlene Baum of Mason City; three sisters, Su Hampton, Nancy Scott and Rita Ekborg; and one brother, Bill Baum. Judi was the special aunt of Eric and Julie Miller, Jamie Miller, Johnnie Miller, Traci Ward, Bobby and Kelly Hampton, Laura Gardinier, Travis Ekborg, Ammie Scott, Valerie Baum, Kary Baum,and Lisa Baum and great aunt of Jordan Rose and Jakob Dougherty (Baum). Other survivors include four stepdaughters, Tania Marejon, Stacy Wahl, Carmen Cebulski and Tara Wahl; and three stepgrandchildren, Beau and Jesse Cebulski and Kylee Faber (Wahl).

She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents and a nephew, Jeffrey Hampton.

 

James Walter Seely

COULTER — James Walter Seely, 64, died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 1997) at his home in Hampton.

The family will gather today at 3:30 p.m. at the Coulter Community Center; friends are welcome to come for a time of fellowship.

Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Memphis, Mo., on Nov. 22.

James was born Jan. 30, 1933, in William Port, Tenn.

Survivors include his wife, Margarett Seely of Melburn; son James Seely of Novinger, Mo.; sister, Ruth Six of Dallas Melcher; brother, Regie of Arkansas; three stepchildren; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and an infant sister.

 

 

Albert John Sala

Albert John Sala, 79, of 1000 Eisenhower Ave. #201, died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at home.

The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Private family services and inurnment will take place. Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. S.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Albert John Sala was born May 29, 1918, in Westport, Conn., son of Nicholas and Pasqualina (Fratina) Sala. He married Marie Ann Delallo on Jan. 16, 1943, in New Canaan, Conn.

Albert lived in Norwalk, Conn., for 44 years until moving to Mason City in March 1987. He worked at Beldoch Knitting Mills for many years until retiring in 1979. He enjoyed photography, watching TV, and loved nature and following wild animals. Albert volunteered many years at the Stanford Nature Center, Stanford, Conn.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Sala of Mason City; two brothers, Salvadore Sala of Norwalk, Conn., and Harold Sala of Bridgeport, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and two brothers.

 

Monroe S. Bellomy

OWATONNA, Minn. — Monroe S. Bellomy, 88, of 1515 N. Elm, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at the Cedar View Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church officiating. Fullerton Funeral Home, Mason City, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.

Monroe, the son of Leslie and Bessie (Ambrosius) Bellomy, was born on June 17, 1909, in Pleasantview, Ill. He attended school in Pleasantview and Rushville, Ill., school systems. He entered the Army in 1942 in Illinois and was honorably discharged in 1945 as a staff sergeant of the Medical Corps. He was united in marriage to Helga C. Madsen on March 22, 1942, in Macomb, Ill. In 1945 they moved to Mason City, Iowa, where he worked as a salesman for the Holsum Bakery for 20 years. He then was a salesman for Paul's Mobile Homes for seven years and then operated his own business as an escort for oversize loads in the state of Iowa until his retirement in 1981. In 1985 they moved to Apache Junction, Ariz., for nine years until their move to Owatonna three years ago. He enjoyed hunting pheasants, fishing and bowling at Dick's Bowling and also the Rosebowl. Monroe was a charter and life member of the VFW Post 733 in Mason City, Iowa; a former member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, the Moose and Elks Lodges.

Monroe is survived by his loving wife, Helga, of Owatonna, Minn.; two sons, Michael and his wife Nancy Bellomy of Deer River, Minn., and Jon and his wife Judy Bellomy of Owatonna, Minn.; his sister, Evelyn Behrmann of Sun City, Calif.; six grandchildren, Amy and her husband Dave Defreitas of Washington, Ill.; Melinda and her husband Joe Bellomy Muth of Fairfax, Va.; Matthew, Mark, Andrea and Annette Bellomy, all of Owatonna, Minn.; and two great-grandchildren, Mathew and Emma Defreitas of Washington, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Donald Richard Graham

TITONKA — Donald Richard Graham, 78, of 125 Third Ave., died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Timm Wilkin officiating. Burial will be in the Buffalo Township Cemetery, rural Titonka.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.

Donald was born Aug. 28, 1919, in rural Titonka.

Survivors include his wife, Jean of Titonka; two daughters, Cheryl Whisman of Las Vegas, Nev., and Gloria Hamilton of Ames; two grandchildren; and one sister, Lois Boekelman of Titonka.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

 

George Garza Gleason

MASON CITY — George Garza Gleason, 74, of 1316 N. Washington Ave.,, died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, East Campus.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating Interment will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with a Scripture service at 7 p.m.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the George Gleason Memorial Fund.

George was born Nov. 28, 1922, the son of Otilo and Adela (Garza) Gleason in San Antonia, Texas. On May 8, 1954, George was united in marriage to Juanita Barragan in Mason City.

George was an avid boxing fan who enjoyed watching it on TV. He enjoyed his most valued time with his family especially his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Hispanic Club.

George will be greatly missed by his wife, Juanita of Mason City; one daughter Mr. and Mrs. Craig (Patti) Peterson of Minneapolis, Minn.; one son, Mr. and Mrs. David (Chris) Gleason of Mason City; five sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Antonio (Esther) Anaya of New Mexico; Nora Gutierrez, Janey Garza, Josie Montejano, Eloisa Quesada, all of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers Julio Rodriguez Jr. and Ramon Gleason both of San Antonio, Texas, two granddaughters, Crystal and Savannah Gleason of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Gleason was preceded in death by his parents, Otilo and Adela.

 

Lumetta M. Hinkle

LEDYARD — Lumetta M. Hinkle, 81, of 301 Logan St., died Thursday (Nov. 6, 1997) at United Hospital in Blue Earth, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Evangelical and Reformed Church, Ledyard, with the Rev. Larry Doughan officiating. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Evangelical and Reformed Church.

Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, is in charge of arrangements.

Lumetta was born March 9, 1916, in Kossuth County.

ALGONA — Irene Bjustrom, 85, of Algona, died Thursday (Nov. 6, 1997) at the Algona Manor Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Philip Webb officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, where there will be an Eastern Star Service at 7 p.m.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Lindhorst of Burt, and Jeanette Ozimek of Barrington, Ill.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and three brothers.

 

 

Leo Tracy

ST. ANSGAR — Leo Tracy, 93, of St. Ansgar, died Friday (Nov. 7, 1997) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the St. Ansgar Cemetery with the Rev. Ted Stowers of the United Methodist Church officiating.

There will be no visitation. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Leo Tracy was born Nov. 2, 1904, in Wisconsin.

BANCROFT — Mary B. Meyer, 78, of Bancroft, died Friday (Nov. 7, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church with the Rev. John Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, where a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary will be held at 3 p.m., and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m.

Mary B. Meyer was born May 28, 1919, in Bancroft.

Survivors include one daughter, Maryann Curran of Eldridge; one son, John Meyer of Boulder, Colo.; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sons.

 

Ernhart Malmin

OSAGE — Ernhart Malmin, 78, of Osage, died Friday (Nov. 7, 1997) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Champion Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Ernhart Malmin was born Oct. 27, 1919, in Sandnes, Norway.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Malmin of Osage; one daughter, Rose Mustain of Osage; three sons, Allen Malmin of Orchard; Karl Malmin of Castro Valley, Calif., and Kevin Malmin of Osage; two sisters, Ovidia Malmin and Edith Holand, both of Norway; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and one granddaughter.

 

Bernice 'Bea' (Christopher) Walsh

ROCKWELL — Bernice "Bea" (Christopher) Walsh, 83, of 5474 Partridge Road, died Thursday (Nov. 6, 1997) at her home.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Ron Bollinger of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell, officiating. Inurnment will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Those wishing to express their sympathy may direct memorials to the Bea Walsh Memorial Fund.

Bea, as most people knew her, was born on Oct. 24, 1914, the daughter of Herman and Christina (Schellhorn) Pries in Tripoli. She graduated from Tripoli High School in 1931, and continued her education at the teachers college in Cedar Falls.

On Sept. 5, 1934, Bea was united in marriage to Cliff Loure in Tripoli. On June 5, 1936, she was united in marriage to William Christopher in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. On July 5, 1987, Bea was united in marriage to John R. Walsh, in Mason City, and has resided in the area since 1972, when she moved from Lawndale, Calif.

Bernice had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening and canning. She was musically talented and enjoyed playing and listening to the organ, piano and trumpet. While she was going to nursing school she taught piano lessons to help pay for her tuition. Bea and some of her college friends even had a band to show off their talents. Bernice was also very crafty with her hands and enjoyed quilting and crocheting. She spent time playing on a pool league, fishing in the river and spending valued time with her family. Those who knew Bea knew she wasn't afraid to try anything and that she was going to succeed.

Bea is survived by her husband, John; three daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin (Catherene) Friedly Pollock of Jesup; Mr. and Mrs. Earl (Beverly) Lechner of Rockwell, and Carolyn Duckett of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sons, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Beverly) Christopher of Waterloo, and Mr. and Mrs. William (Chris) Christopher of Los Angeles; one brother, Mr. and Mrs. Harold (Netha) Pries of LaPorte City; 27 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Walsh was preceded in death by her parents; her second husband, William Christopher; one infant daughter, Judy Kay; one son, Danny; one sister, Renetta; one brother, Wilbur Pries; one grandson, Terry Duckett; and one son-in-law, Allan Friedly.

GREENE — Norma Flora, 78, of 219 N. Water St., died Saturday (Nov. 8, 1997) at Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday with a public scripture service at 7 p.m. at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene.

Mrs. Mary Virginia Loring Knight

BURLINGTON — Mrs. Mary Virginia Loring Knight, 88, of 2805 Garden Circle, died Saturday (Nov. 8, 1997) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational Church with the Rev. Roy Backus officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Indianola.

The family will receive friends in Prugh’s Funeral Home Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Graveside committal services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the cemetery in Indianola.

Mary Virginia (Loring) Knight was born Jan. 8, 1909, in Indianola, to Wesley V. and Emma Mae (Houghtaling) Loring. She moved to Mason City at an early age where she graduated from Mason City High School and attended junior college. She graduated from Iowa State College in Ames in 1931 with a bachelor’s of science degree, with emphasis on the applied arts.

On Nov. 12, 1933, she married Dr. Russell A. Knight and together they made their home in Rockford. She assisted in his medical practice for several years and after his death on April 28, 1966, Mrs. Knight served as librarian for the city library. In 1971, she moved to Burlington.

Mrs. Knight was a member of First Congregational Church, Alliance Circle of First Congregational Church, PEO Chapter HU, Methodist quilters and Kings Daughters.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Zeran and Sandra Allgood, both of Burlington; four grandchildren, Melissa Zeran of Kirksville, Mo., Michael Zeran of Iowa City, Mary Zeran of Seattle, Wash., and Christopher Rygh of Milwaukee, Wis.; seven step grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Memorials have been established for the First Congregational Church and the Burlington Public Library.

 

 

Miriam Blanche Marken

CLEAR LAKE — Miriam Blanche Marken, 88, died Friday (Nov. 7, 1997) at Oakwood Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Hampton with the Rev. Joe Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Miriam was born Dec. 7, 1909, in Rhodes.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Zahrt of Turin; one son, Alan Marken of Clear Lake; one sister, Maxine Holmes of Eldora; one brother, Robert Baker of Riverside, Calif.; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, one daughter and two sisters.

 

 

Caroline ‘Carol’ Tool

MASON CITY — Caroline "Carol" Tool, 93, of 829 Sixth St. S.W., Apt. No. 2, died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Wayside Chapel, First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Memorials may be given to the Caroline "Carol" Tool Memorial Fund.

Carol was born Dec. 27, 1903, at Titonka, the daughter of Enno and Lena (Stohr) Eden. She attended country school in the Titonka area. She lived in Buffalo Center and Forest City for several years before moving to Mason City in 1962 when she was married to Vernell Tool on May 5, 1962, in Mason City. Carol was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Mary Martha Circle. She served as past president of the VFW Auxiliary, past senior counselor of the auxiliary and belonged to United Commercial Travelers.

Carol loved to entertain friends and family in her home, and she enjoyed gardening and raising flowers.

Survivors include three sisters: Lorraine Rooks of Clear Lake, Clara Nelson and husband, Leonard V., of Mason City, and Vera Osnes of Covina, Calif.; one brother, Henry Eden and wife, Mollie, of Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernell, on May 31, 1979; brother, Geerd Eden; and a sister, Edith Eden.

 

 

Gladys M. Klemesrud

OSAGE — Gladys Maakestad Klemesrud, 95, died Friday (Nov. 7, 1997) at Faith Lutheran Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in Osage Cemetery.

Gladys was born Aug. 14, 1902, in rural Osage.

Josephine H. Perez

ALBERT LEA, Minn. — Josephine H. Perez, 87, died Saturday (Nov. 8, 1997) at Naeve Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Theodore Catholic Church with the Rev. Donald Zenk officiating. Interment will be in St. Theodore's cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Bonnerup Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service at the church. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Josephine was born March 2, 1910, in Mexico, the daughter of Frank and Felipa (Ramirez) Hernandez. She attended school in Topeka, Kan. Josephine was united in marriage to Eliceo Perez. Most of her life was lived in Mason City and Albert Lea, Minn. She was a member of St. Theodore's Catholic Church. Josephine enjoyed cooking, embroidery, crocheting, knitting, music, dancing, plants and spending time with the family.

Josephine is survived by seven sons, Paul and his wife, Lola Hernandez, of Kansas City, Mo., John Perez of Washington, Raymond and his wife, Connie Perez, of Austin, Texas, Phillip and his wife, Judy Perez, of Coon Rapids, Minn., William and his wife, Suzanne Perez, of Raymond, Minn., Ruben and his wife, Sandra Perez ,of Albert Lea, Minn., and Eliceo Perez Jr. of Albert Lea, Minn.; three daughters, Isabel and her husband, Albert Villarreal, of Albert Lea, Mary Rita and her husband, Stanley Johnson, of Albert Lea, and Virginia Zamora Egeness of Denver, Colo.; 43 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Jennie Mata, of Chicago, Ill., and one brother, Tony Alaniz, of Kansas City, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eliceo, in 1973; two sons, Jesse Perez and Richard Perez; one daughter, Guadalupe Ramos; three grandchildren; one sister; and four brothers.

Josephine will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

George Garza Gleason

MASON CITY — George Garza Gleason, 74, of 1316 N. Washington, died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. Officiating was the Rev. Carl Ries. Interment followed in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St., S.E., was in charge of arrangements.

George was born Nov. 28, 1922, the son of Otilo and Adela (Garza) Gleason, in San Antonio, Texas. On May 8, 1954, George was united in marriage to Juanita Barragan in Mason City. George was employed by Armour for 35 years, until his retirement.

George was an avid boxing fan who enjoyed watching it on TV. He enjoyed his most valued time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Hispanic Club.

George will be greatly missed by his wife, Juanita, of Mason City; one daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Craig (Patti) Peterson of Minneapolis, Minn.; one son, Mr. and Mrs. David (Chris) Gleason of Mason City; five sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Antonio (Esther) Anaya of New Mexico and Nora Gutierrez, Janey Garza, Josie Montegano and Eloisa Quesada, all of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Julio Rodriguez Jr. and Ramon Gleason, both of San Antonio, Texas; two granddaughters, Crystal and Savannah Gleason of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Gleason was preceded in death by his parents, Otilo and Adela.

COLFAX — Lauren Kathryn Colville, 5, died Saturday (Nov. 8, 1997) of meningitis at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, Colfax, with the Rev. Jill Flyr officiating.

Visitation will be held after 2 p.m. today at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home.

Lauren was born Jan. 14, 1992, in Mason City to William and Ginay (Shindelar) Colville. She was a kindergarten student at Colfax-Mingo Elementary School.

Survivors include her parents, William and Gennie Colville of Colfax; paternal grandparents, Willis and Kathryn Colville of Mason City; maternal grandmother and stepgrandfather, Marjorie and Dean Walker of Marble Rock; great-grandmother, Amelia Leuenberger of Marble Rock; and three sisters, Felice Colville of Beaver Dam, Wis., and Ellen and Carly Colville both at home.

Wendell Fay "Buzz" Sturges

DES MOINES — Wendell Fay "Buzz" Sturges, 58, 1010 39th St., died Saturday (Nov. 8, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Central Presbyterian Church. The body will be cremated following the service.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dunn’s Funeral Home, 2121 Grand Ave.

Wendell was born July 16, 1939, in Rockwell. He had lived in Des Moines for 28 years. He was a retired route man for Colonial Bakery. He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local No. 127.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Sturges of Des Moines; two sons, James Sturges of Des Moines and Jeff Sturges of Pleasant Hill; three daughters, Janet McLeran of West Des Moines, Julie Redd of Des Moines and Janice Scavo of Urbandale; two brothers, Jay Sturges of Rockwell and Bob Sturges of Rockwell; one sister, Donna Billings of Marysville, Wash.; and nine grandchildren.
