Joyce A. Kock

GREENE  



Funeral services for Joyce A. Kock, 61, of 110 S. Fourth St.,

Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran

Church in Greene with the Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial

will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral

Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Visitation will continue on Saturday at the church one hour before

services.



Joyce Ann Shafer was born Dec. 27, 1935, at the Cedar Valley

Hospital in Charles City, a daughter of Herbert John and Cloey

Susan (Clifton) Shafer, and died Wednesday (April 23, 1997) at

the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.



She grew up in the Pleasant Grove Township area where she attended

country school and graduated from the Charles City High School

in 1954. She was united in marriage to Kenneth Eugene Kock on

June 20, 1954, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Greene. They

were engaged in farming for nine years before moving into Greene

where she was employed by the Mathers Nursing Home for 17 years.



Joyce and Kenny enjoyed their 42 years of marriage and going

camping, fishing and playing cards. She also enjoyed going to

stock car races and later watching them on TV. Most of all she

enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.



She was baptized and confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran

Church in Greene on Dec. 19, 1954.



Living family members include her husband, Kenneth, of Greene;

one daughter, Kim and her husband, Tony Berger, of Clear Lake;

two sons and their spouses, Richard and Deb Kock, and Russell

and Robin Kock, all of Greene; six grandchildren, Taylor Berger,

Shannon Kock, Allyson Kock, Reese Kock, Riley Kock, and Ramsey

Kock; her sister-in-law, Marian and husband, Robert Schneider,

of Waverly; her brother-in-law, David and his wife, Judy Kock,

of Bettendorf; two special aunts, Lois Shafer of Nashua, and

Cuba Pilant of Riverside, Calif.; along with several nieces and

nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Mark,

who died in infancy.

John E. Onken

GREENE  



Funeral services for John E. Onken, 79, of 811 11th St., Charles

City, formerly of Greene, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at

the United Methodist Church in Greene, with Pastor Gene A. Burry

officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery in Marble

Rock.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral

Chapel in Marble Rock, and will continue at the church on Saturday,

from noon until service time.



John Edward Onken was born Nov. 11, 1917, in rural Floyd, a

son of Enno and Jennie T.W. (Rademacher) Onken, and died Wednesday

(April 23, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason

City.



He received his education in the rural schools near Floyd. On

Sept. 12, 1943, he was united in marriage to Vera Elaine Medlin

at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They first made their home

in rural Orchard and later lived in the Charles City area until

moving to Greene in 1972.



John was a 30-year employee of Salsbury Laboratories in Charles

City, retiring in 1980. He had a great love for farming and enjoyed

working for the area farmers. In 1982, they moved into Marble

Rock and later lived in Chattanooga, Tenn., before returning

to the Greene area where they lived on the Kepple Farm. Vera

died on Jan. 17, 1993. John moved to Charles City last year.



He will be remembered as an active individual who enjoyed being

around people and one who enjoyed a good conversation with his

friends. He enjoyed taking part in activities with his family,

which included being on the pit crew while his son raced, and

for many years he was drummer with his son in the Flood Creek

Band. Throughout the years he bowled for several teams in the

area. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Charles

City.



Living family members include two sons and their spouses, David

John and Sara of Osage, and Dennis Ray and Thelma of Greene;

eight grandchildren, Richard David Onken, Dawn Marie Gagon, Jody

Eudean, Sean David, Angela Sue Hahn, Dennis Ray, Jr., Daniel

John, and Jamie Marie Drilling; four great-grandchildren, William

Richard, Alisha Marie, Lexxis Elizabeth, and Jeremy Eudean; two

sisters, Jennie Bell Adams of Osage, and Donna Marie Onken of

Omaha, Neb.; five brothers, Edward Enno Onken of Topak, Ariz.,

Arthur Henry Onken of Osage, James Herman Onken of Orchard, Frank

James Onken of Rudd, and Keith Andrew Onken, Sr., of Osage.



He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera; three sisters, Martha

Marie Miller, Elizabeth Ann Onken, and Dorothy Ann Onken; and

three brothers, Walter Charles Onken, George Johnson Onken, and

Enno Johnson Onken.

ALLISON  



Harold A. Steer, 81, of Allison, died Wednesday (April 23, 1997)

at the Waverly United Municipal Hospital.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St.

James Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating.

Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel

Funeral Home.



Harold A. Steer was born April 10, 1916, in rural Butler County.



Survivors include his wife, Berdene Steer of Allison; and nieces

and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother.

Allen R. Spinler

CARTHAGE, S.D.  



Allen R. Spinler, 50, of rural Carthage, S.D., died Wednesday

(April 23, 1997) at his home.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United

Church of Christ, Carthage, with the Rev. Don Oneal officiating.

Burial will be in Plesantview Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today with the

family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Willoughby Funeral Home,

Howard, S.D., and will continue one hour prior to services at

the church.



Allen R. Spinler was born Aug. 17, 1946, at Chelsea, Iowa, the

son of Frank and Marge (Wilkenson) Spinler. He married Lois (Chance)

George on Nov. 18, 1983, at Carthage, S.D. He attended school

at Chelsea and Tama.



Allen worked and was the manager of Van Duzer Farms in Mason

City for 10 years. He then moved to Carthage in June of 1983,

and farmed until his death.



Survivors include his wife, Lois, of Carthage; one son, Shawn

George of Sutherland; three daughters, Summer George of Carthage,

Jody Spinler of Waverly, and Gina Spinler of Cedar Falls; three

grandchildren; his mother, Marge Avery, and his step-father,

Bruce Avery of Dows; a sister, Mrs. Dennis (Luci) Blanchard of

Clear Lake; two half-brothers, Earl Spinler of DeWitt, and Lawrence

Spinler of Chelsea.



He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Spinler.

Rev. Henry O. Thompson

DOYLESTOWN, Penn.  



The Rev. Henry O. Thompson, 65, of Doylestown, Penn., formerly

of Northwood, died Thursday (April 24, 1997) at his home.



Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 1997,

at Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City. Interment will

be in Northwood.



Funeral arrangements were handled by Holcombe-Fisher Funeral

Home, Flemington, N.J.



Henry O. Thompson was born Oct. 23, 1931, the son of the late

Orrin S. and Martha Mary Johnson Thompson. He was a Methodist

minister serving several Methodist churches.



Survivors include his wife, Joyce Beebe Thompson, Doylestown;

two sons, Howard Thompson of South Orange, N.J., and Warren Thompson

of Knoxville, Tenn.; six grandsons, Gilbert, William, Philip

and Paul, John and Armand Thompson; six sisters, Helen Turbett,

Sharon DeMaris, Mavis Fitzgerald and Marlys Thompson, all of

Mason City, Nancy Young of Garner, and Shirley Hickey of Albert

Lea, Minn.; his first wife, Virginia Sharkey Thompson of Maplewood,

N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald Thompson in

1991; and a sister, Verna May Dobbertin in 1996.

Irene O. Sabin

RAKE  



Irene O. Sabin, 77, of Rake, died Friday (April 18, 1997) at

the United Hospital, Blue Earth, Minn.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dell Lutheran

Church, rural Frost, Minn., with the Rev. Roy Hendrickson officiating.

Burial will be in the Dell Lutheran Cemetery.



Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church

on Saturday. Winter Fuenral Home, Buffalo Center, is in charge

of arrangements.



Irene O. Sabin was born July 24, 1919, in Faribault County,

Minn.



Survivors include one daughter, Lori Anderson of Fergus Falls,

Minn.; two brothers, Rick Sabin of Frost, Minn., and Randy Sabin

of Montgomery, Minn.; one sister, Alice Dahl of Wells, Minn.;

and eight grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers.

Dorothy L. Gayther

CHARLES CITY  



Dorothy L. (Mrs. R. Kendall) Gayther, 86, 505 ``J'' St., Charles

City, died Wednesday (April 23, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice

Inpatient Center, Mason City, following a lengthy illness.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the

Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., with the Rev. Karen

Rask Behling, associate pastor, St. John Evangelical Lutheran

Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.



Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today, April 25, at the

funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to

9 p.m. The casket will be closed on Saturday.



Mrs. Gayther, the former Dorothy Leona Jung, was born Oct. 25,

1910, in Charles City, the daughter of Louis A. and Fay E. (Walker)

Jung. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1928. On

Nov. 25, 1933, at the First Methodist Church parsonage in Charles

City, she was united in marriage to R. Kendall Gayther. Mr. Gayther

died in 1980.



For three years Dorothy was employed at Peerless Photo in Charles

City. She worked as a sales clerk of J.C. Penney in Charles City

for five years. Later in life, she became a sales clerk at The

Villa Clothing Store in Charles City for five years.



Mrs. Gayther was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church

and the Mary Circle of WELCA. One of her greatest delights was

being a member of Jolly Pots, a card and birthday club with which

she had spent many happy times.



She was a member of McKinley School Homecraft, the FCNB Heritage

Club and the Charles City Senior Citizens. For many years, she

was an active volunteer with the pink ladies of Floyd County

Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.



She enjoyed golfing, bowling, bicycling, fishing and camping.

She will be fondly remembered for her love of traveling, especially

with her husband and daughters, as they took many trips with

the Heritage Club.



Living family members include two daughters, Nancy Kramer and

her husband, Dean, of Mason City, and Carol Ann Nicol of Coralville;

one brother and his wife, Carlyle ``Bud'' and Eunice Jung of

Charles City; two sisters-in-law, Eloise Gayther and Zita Jung,

both of Charles City; four grandchildren, Tony, Shari, Russ and

Steve; and five great-grandchildren, Nick, Emilee, Matthew, Payton

and Aurora.



In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death

by two brothers, Kenneth ``Red'' Jung and Lloyd Jung.

Marion M. Wible

MASON CITY 



Marion M. Wible, 93, of 14 S. Kentucky Ave., died Wednesday

(April 23, 1997) at the Heritage Care Center where she had lived

for the past eight years.



A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Trinity

Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John

Gannett officiating. Inurnment took place following services

at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with services conducted

by the Women of the Moose #870.



There was no visitation. The body was cremated.



Memorials may be given to the Marion M. Wible Memorial Fund.



Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E,. was in charge

of arrangements.



Marion M. Wible was born June 17, 1903, at Pomeroy, the daughter

of George E. and Dolly Pearl (Gibson) Randall.



She moved to Fort Dodge at an early age and attended schools

there and at Irvington.



On Jan. 18, 1922, she married John L. Wible at Mason City. They

moved to Spring Valley, Minn. and later to Draper, Wis., where

they farmed.



The couple returned to Mason City where Marion was employed

at Phalens and Lyons Dry Cleaners, retiring in 1968.



She loved gardening, flowers and doing things for her family

and friends.



Marion was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the VFW Auxiliary

#733, the Military Order of the Cooties #11, and the Women of

the Moose #870. She was a former member of the DAV Auxiliary.



Survivors include one son, Allison E. Wible and his wife, Margaret,

Mason City; two daughters, Belva I. Vician  of Mason City, and

Wanda J. Johann and her husband, James of Newton; 13 grandchildren,

Linda Booth and her husband, Roger of Marysville, Wash., John

Wible and his wife, Debra of Fort Ritchie, Md., LuAnn Crombag

and her husband, Joseph of Jordan, Minn., Lyle Wible and his

wife, Sherry of Parsons, Kan., Michael Wible of South Carolina,

Dennis Vician and his wife, Patricia of Emmetsburg, Bonnie Vician

and her special friend, Jim of Mason City, Jacqueline Soli and

her husband, Terry of Fort Madison, Wanda Tritch and her husband,

Mark of Milford, Neb., Rhonda Cook of Newton, James Johann and

his special friend Pam of Mason City, Lloyd Johann and his wife,

Connie of Newton, and William Johann and his special friend,

Myrna of Loveland, Colo.; 25 great-grandchildren; three sisters,

Lettia Bokusky of Mt. Lake Terrace; Bernice Keesling of Minneapolis,

Minn., and Faye Frederickson and her husband, Arild of Askove,

Minn.; one special brother-in-law, Robert Johnson of Arizona;

and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John

on Oct. 24, 1976; three brothers; and six sisters.

Donald A. Oehlert

ROCKWELL  



Donald A. Oehlert, 84, of Rockwell, died Thursday at his home.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter

Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rockwell, with the Rev. Ronald Bolinger

officiating. Burial will be in the Rockwell Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Grarup

Funeral Home, Sheffield.



Donald A. Oehlert was born on May 7, 1912, in Sheffield, the

son of August and Anna (Holscher) Oehlert.



He graduated from the Sheffield High School with the class of

1930.



Following school, he farmed with his father near Sheffield until

moving to Thornton to farm.



He was united in marriage to Mabel Nicolet on Feb. 27, 1937,

in the Lutheran Parsonage in Sheffield by the Rev. L.W. Reuther.



They made their home on a farm south of Clear Lake until March

of 1944 when they purchased a farm southwest of Rockwell.



In 1978, they built a home and moved into Rockwell.



Don enjoyed doing woodworking, refinishing furniture, traveling,

gardening, raising flowers and spending time with his family.



He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake before

moving to the Rockwell area and becoming a member of the Zion-St.

John Lutheran Church of Sheffield in 1944 where he served on

various boards.



In 1979, they transfered their membership to the St. Peter Evangelical

Lutheran  Church of Rockwell.



He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Mabel of Rockwell;

one daughter, Deanna Kruckenberg and her husband, Larry of Rockwell;

two grandchildren, Kurt Kruckenberg and his wife, Sherri of La

Vista, Neb., and Kandee Bartholomew and her husband, Jeff of

Mason City; five great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Joshua Kruckenberg

and Benjamin, Jacob and Katee Bartholomew; one sister, Bernice

Clark of Rock-A-Way Beach, Mo.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three

sisters.

William A. ``Bill'' Blanchard

MASON CITY  



William A. ``Bill'' Blanchard, 61, of 1124 Second St. S.W.,

died Friday (April 25, 1997) and went to be with the Lord at

North Iowa Mercy Health Center.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Church

of the Nazarene, 507 S. Carolina, with the Rev. Curtis DeLong

officiating.  Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. today at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania and one hour before service

time at the church.



Memorials may be given to the William A. ``Bill'' Blanchard

Memorial Fund.



William ``Bill'' A. Blanchard was born May 31, 1935 in LaCrosse,

the son of Joseph and Lillian (Johnson) Blanchard. Bill attended

and graduated from LaCrosse-Logan High  School in 1953.  He married

Delores Graff on November 14, 1953 at the Bethel Lutheran Church

in La Crosse, Wisc.  Bill worked for the Trane Company for many

years and then for WWTC, Western Wisconsin Technical College

for 11 years.  Bill and Delores moved to Mason City  in 1987

and owned and operated the Shepherd's Voice Christian book Store

in Willowbrook Mall and also helped promote craft sales throughout

the Midwest.  In 1994 Bill started to drive school bus for the

Mason City school District.  He drove Bus #7 and loved all the

little children that he drove to school.  Bill enjoyed having

tea parties with his grandchildren and taking them to East Park

to feed the deer.



Bill was a member of First Church of the Nazarene.



Bill will be sadly missed by his wife, Delores Blanchard of

Mason City; two daughters, Barbara Seielstad and husband Paul

of Pueblo, Colo., and Lisa Redig and husband Steve of Britt;

three sons, Jef Blanchard and wife Patti of Mason City, Scott

Blanchard of Mason City and Joe Blanchard of Mason City; 12 grandchildren,

Nathaniel, Isaac, Ryan, Allison, Katelyn, Danielle, Adam, Kevin,

Tyler, Samantha, Kelsey, and Ashley; his mother, Mrs. Lillian

Berg, LaCrosse, Wisc.; and a sister, Benita Olson and husband

Robert of LaCrosse, Wisc.



He was preceded in death by his Father, Joseph; one brother,

Louis and his grandparents.

Jerry L. Mosher, 54, died Friday (April 25, 1997) on his farm

south of Clarion.



Funeral services for Jerry will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at

St. John's Catholic Church with the Rev. Wayne Droessler officiating.

Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.



Visitation will be Monday from 3 to 8 p.m. at William Funeral

Home with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. during visitation.



Jerry Leroy Mosher was born on March 7, 1943, at Clarion.



Survivors include his wife, Bev of Clarion; his son, Rick of

Waukee; his daughter Michile Gangstad of Clarion; two grandchildren;

and his mother, Regina Mosher, of Clarion.



He was preceded in death by his father.

Irving Huebner, 94, died Friday (April 25, 1997) at Mitchell

County Regional Health Center, Osage.

Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gregory Bjornstad officiating.

Irving was born Sept. 25, 1902 at Grafton the son of Herman

and Anna (Heimke) Huebner.  He was Baptized on Oct. 10, 1902

and Confirmed in April 1917 by the Rev. John Landdeck. He attended

rural schools and Grafton High School. Irving married Lilly Tabbert

Jan. 17, 1926 at St. Ansgar.  They farmed in the Grafton area.

Irving enjoyed playing the piano along with other instruments

and listening to music on tapes and radio. He spent much of his

early years playing in an orchestra, selling instruments and

playing for silent movies in Mason City and Manly. Music was

an important part of Irving's life. He also enjoyed gardening

and fishing in his younger years.



Survivors included one son, Kermit Huebner and his wife Elaine

of Grafton; one daughter, Darlene Greenway of Palm Springs, Fla.;

one sister, Alpha Walk of Albert Lea, Minn.; eight grandchildren;

14 great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.



He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lilly in 1992,

and two brothers William Huebner and Herbert Huebner.

Helen A. Miller, 64, of 120 26th S.W. died Friday (April 18,

1997) at her home.

will be REv. Fred Lewis, Inurement will follow at the Elmwood-St.

Joseph Cemetery.

the time of service.  Helen was cremated at Memorial Park Crematory.

Helen was born Aug. 26, 1932 the daughter of Cady and Leah (Guldberg)

Morgan in Latimer.  She graduated form Alexander High School.

On Sept. 15, 1949 Helen married Paul Edward Miller in Harrison,

AK. The couple then moved to the Mason City area and Helen attended

North Iowa Area Community College.  After graduation, she was

employed by NIACC as the library office clerk and held that position

for over 18 years.



Helen got involved in the Girl Scout organization and was a

leader for 10 years.  She later was a volunteer for the R.S.V.P.

She also enjoyed reading and listening to music, especially country.

she spent her leisure time knitting, crocheting and ordering

things out of mail order catalogs.  Helen was a Mother of the

Silver Star.



Helen is survived by her three daughter, Donna Marie Miller

of Roseville, Minn., Deborah and her husband Dean Meyer of Davenport,

and Diane Miller of Bettendorf; one daughter-in-law, Donna Mae

Miller of Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Paula and Michael Meyer

and Douglas and Devan Miller; one sister, Margaret and her husband

Crash Evanson of St. Paul, Minn.; two brothers, Arthur ``Bud''

and his wife Loretta Morgan of Hampton, and Jack and his wife

Dolly Morgan of Bodfish, Calf. and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul Miller

in February 1996; three sons, David, Douglas, and a stillborn

son; one sister, Marabele Morgan and one brother, Lloyd Morgan.

Donald A. Oehlert was born on May 7, 1912, in Sheffield, the

son of August and Anna (Holscher) Oehlert.



He graduated from the Sheffield High School with the class of

1930.



Following school, he farmed with his father near Sheffield until

moving to Thornton to farm.



He was united in marriage to Mabel Nicolet on Feb. 27, 1937,

in the Lutheran Parsonage in Sheffield by the Rev. L.W. Reuther.



They made their home on a farm south of Clear Lake until March

of 1944 when they purchased a farm southwest of Rockwell.



In 1978, they built a home and moved into Rockwell.



Don enjoyed doing woodworking, refinishing furniture, traveling,

gardening, raising flowers and spending time with his family.



He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake before

moving to the Rockwell area and becoming a member of the Zion-St.

John Lutheran Church of Sheffield in 1944 where he served on

various boards.



In 1979, they transfered their membership to the St. Peter Evangelical

Lutheran  Church of Rockwell.



He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Mabel of Rockwell;

one daughter, Deanna Kruckenberg and her husband, Larry of Rockwell;

two grandchildren, Kurt Kruckenberg and his wife, Sherri of La

Vista, Neb., and Kandee Bartholomew and her husband, Jeff of

Mason City; five great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Joshua Kruckenberg

and Benjamin, Jacob and Katee Bartholomew; one sister, Bernice

Clark of Rock-A-Way Beach, Mo.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three

1957.



She was employed at Minnesota Rubber for the past 14 years.



Martha loved bowling and reading. She was an avid baseball fan.



She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

lived in Riceville until 1966.



She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in LeRoy,

Minn.

Home; two daughters, Donna (Mrs. Clarence) Jones, LeRoy, Minn.,

and Janet (Mrs. Norval) Britain, Spring Grove, Minn., nine grandchildren;

Melburn Elvin Knudtson was born on Nov. 14, 1921, in Mount Valley

Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, son of Knudt B. and Clara (Haugen)

Knudtson.



He graduated from Forest City High School in 1939.



On Dec. 12, 1948, he was united in marriage to Cleone Hallett

at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller, Iowa.



Melburn farmed in the Lake Mills area all his life.



He served his country in the United States Navy during World

War II.



Melburn is survived by his wife, Cleone Knudtson of Lake Mills;

his children, Michael and his wife, Kathy Knudtson, Rosalie and

her husband, Michael Helgeson, and Kerby and his wife, Karen

Knudtson, all of Lake Mills; Lori and her husband, Scott Ward

of Mason City; 10 grandchildren, Karla and her husband, Jay Langenbau,

Kendra Knudtson, Kevin Knudtson, Ryan Helgeson, Justin Helgeson,

Matthew Helgeson, Kristanne Knudtson, Andrew Knudtson, Katie

Whalen, Jonathan Whalen; three stepgrandchildren, Joshua Ward,

Vera E. Hubbard

Vera E. Hubbard, 98, of Boise, Idaho, passed away on Saturday

(April 19, 1997) at her home.



A memorial service was held on April 23, 1997, with the Rev.

Nixon Knight of Boise, Idaho, officiating.



Her ashes and those of her late husband, Myron K. Hubbard, will

be returned to Mason City, Iowa, to lie beside the graves of

her parents and younger brother.



Vera was born to Mary Etta and Joseph T. Laird on March 2, 1899,

in rural Illinois near the town of Arthur.



The family moved to Mason City, Iowa, where Vera graduated from

high school. She then graduated from Iowa State College in Ames,

Iowa. While there, she met her future husband, Myron K. Hubbard.



For several years, she taught home economics. Myron (Mike) Hubbard

was a John Deere employee who worked his way up the corporate

ladder, starting as a salesman and retiring as a vice president.

After his retirement, they moved in 1971 to Boise, Idaho.



She is survived by a son, John L. Hubbard and his wife, Jan,

of Mercer Island, Wash.; and their three children, Cindy Bamby,

Deborah Beckman, and Michael K. Hubbard; and a daughter, Mary

Jean Mott and her husband, Cecil of Mason City, Iowa and their

three children, Andrea Dunbar, Kathleen Kellogg, and Laird J.

Mott. There are seven great-grandchildren. Her brother, Morris

E. Laird, an attorney in Mason City, Iowa, also survived.



Vera is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Howard

and her husband, Myron.



A long-time quester, Vera's knowledge of antiques and her unusual

and witty turn of a phrase will be missed but treasured in memory.

Frederick K. Jaspers

Frederick K. Jaspers, 61, of 1103 Lantz Ave., Cedar Falls, and

formerly of Waverly, died Friday evening (April 25, 1997) at

the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, from

natural causes.



Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Paul's Lutheran

Church, Waverly, with Pastor Joyce Sandberg officiating. Committal

services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today in the Sunset Rest Cemetery,

Northwood.



Visitation was held on Monday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home,

Waverly, and will be held for one hour prior to services today

at the church.



Memorials may be directed to the family. A memorial fund will

be established at a later date.



Fred was born on Feb. 1, 1936, in Kensett, Iowa, the son of

Carl and Hazel (Crippen) Jaspers.



Fred graduated from the Kensett High School in 1954, and then

attended and graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa,

in 1958, where he was active in both the baseball and basketball

programs.



Following his graduation, Fred worked for Wartburg Collee as

an Admissions Counselor from 1958-59.



On Aug. 16, 1959, he was united in marriage to Jane Holzen in

Middleton, Wis., and the couple was divorced in 1976.



Fred then became a teacher and coach at Britt High School, Britt,

Iowa, from 1959-61, and from 1961-66 was the assistant football

coach, head basketball coach and recuiter, and taught Physical

Education at Wartburg College in Waverly.



From 1966-1970, Fred was the owner/manager of the Sportsman's

Corner Store in Waverly.



In 1968, Fred became Golf Pro and Tournmanet Director at the

Waverly Pro Shop.



In 1977, he managed the Waverly Golf and Country Club until

1982 and during the off season, sold new and used cars at Coonradt

Ford-Mercury in Waverly.



In 1969, Fred became a Big Ten Basketball Official until he

retired in 1985.



In 1989, Fred went to work as a District Sales Manager for Gage

Food Products in Northwest Iowa until 1991, when he became a

self-employed salesman until the present.



In 1993, Fred was inducted into Iowa Mens A.A.U. Basketball

Hall of Fame. Fred enjoyed being a Big 10 Basketball Official,

as well as all recreational sports including Iowa Athletics,

Basketball, Football, and Golf. Most of all Fred enjoyed spending

time with his family and many friends.



Fred is survived by his two sons, Jack Jaspers of Cedar Rapids,

and Joe Jaspers of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, Janelle (Jaspers)

Jones and her husband, Ken of Minneapolis, Minn.; three grandchildren,

Matt, Jay and Jalen Jaspers; three sisters, Ivadene Reindl and

her husband, Glen of Kensett, Donna Olson and her husband, Bob

of Mason City, Leola Berding and her fiance, Steve of Minneapolis,

Minn.; and two brothers, Lowell Jaspers and his special friend,

Della of Northwood, Carl Jaspers Jr. and his wife, Luella, also

of Northwood; and one sister-in-law, Mary Jean Jaspers of Kensett.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lee

Harlan served his first year internship at Hauser Funeral Home,

Charles City, in 1947 and 1948.



He attended St.Louis College of Mortuary Science, St. Louis,

Mo., in 1948 and 1949, and upon his graduation, he served his

second year internship at McAuley & Son Funeral Home, Mason City,

in 1949 and 1950.



Harlan married Irene Goddard on March 12, 1950, at Charles City.



He received his Iowa Embalmers License in 1951 and his Iowa

Funeral Directors License in 1953.



Harlan was employed as a funeral director in Lake Mills, Fort

Dodge, Atlantic and Osage. He retired from Champion Funeral Home

in 1980.



He maintained his Iowa Funeral Directors License and continued

to work part time at Champion Funeral Home until 1997, when ill

health forced him to stop working.



He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Osage, where

he was an usher for several years. He also served on the Church

Board of Trustees and the Administrative Board. Harlan was an

Osage City Council member for seven years.



He and his wife enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels feeding

at feeders on their deck.



He is survived by his wife, Irene Gauger of Osage; two daughters,

Nancy Chitwood and her husband, Weyman of Dahlonega, Ga., and

stepgrandchildren, Brett, Brenda, and Steve, and six stepgreat-

grandchildren,

all living in Texas; and Kathy Squier and her husband, James

and two grandchildren, Jamie Dawn and Jason of St. Ansgar; three

sons, Harlan ``Gene'' Gauger Jr. and his wife, Lee, and grandaughter,

Jennifer of Jamestown, N.C., Mark and his wife, Kathleen and

granddaughter, Amy of Forest City, and Gary and his wife, Theresa

and granddaughters, Jessica and Emily of Omaha, Neb.; a brother,

Stanley Gauger of Springfield, Mass; two half brothers, Dr. J.W.

Gauger of Tucson, Ariz. and Carlyle J. Gauger and his wife, Dorothy

of Ames; a half sister, Marie Frevert of Rudd; and nieces and

nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents.

City) died Friday (April 25, 1997) in Louisville.

and Mary (Rupp) Frank.



She married Frank Vondracek on Nov. 9, 1935.

Curley; grandchildren, Diana Shearer, and Don and Bobbie Curley;

great-grandchildren, Donnie Shearer, Chris and Ryan Curley, Eric

and Susan Spruill, all of Louisville, Ky.; four brothers, Joe

Clark was a prosthetist from 1943 to 1987, owning and operating

Dale Clark Prosthetics from 1968 until his retirement in 1987.

He was a current at-large board member of the Winnebago Council

of the Boy Scouts of America, a charter member of the American

Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists, and past president of

the American Orthotics and Prosthetics Association of the Midwest

Region.



He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; one son, Dennis of Waterloo;

two daughters, Sharon Beczak and Elizabeth Clark, both of Wichita,

Kan.; two brothers, Lowell of Avon, S.D., and Dean of Midland,

S.D.; one sister, Mildred Strait of Murdo, S.D.; six grandchildren;

Ann was born May 14, 1939, in Mason City, the daughter of Geroge

and Ave Blanche (Smith) Hardy.



She graduated from Manly High School in 1956 and then graduated

from Clarke College, Dubuque, in 1960 with a bachelor of arts

degree in education. Ann taught school in the Mason City school

system.



Ann married Richard F. Nettleton on June 16, 1962, at Sacred

Heart Catholic Church, Manly.



They moved to Des Moines in 1966 and then moved to Webster City

in 1970. While living in Webster City, she taught at St. Edmond's

Elementary School, Fort Dodge.



They moved to Mason City in 1978 and she began teaching at Central

Catholic Schools. She later worked at JTPA in Mason City, Hamilton

Business College and then was development director for Newman

Schools.



In 1994, Ann and Richard moved back to rural Kensett to live

on her family's Century Farm.



Ann was an avid believer of education and enjoyed teaching and

working with kids.



She really enjoyed her children, grandchildren and will be greatly

missed by her family and friends.



She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manly. She

was  serving on the Newman Foundation Board; and was a member

of the Mason City Rotary International and North Iowa Professional

Fund Raisers.



Ann is survived by her husband, Richard Nettleton, rural Kensett;

a son, Peter Nettleton and his wife, Michele, of rural Kensett;

and their two children, Benjamin and Levi Nettleton; a son, William

Nettleton and his wife, Nicole, of Menomonie, Wis.; and their

daughter Halie Nettleton; a son, Paul Nettleton and his wife,

Tammy, of Mason City; and their children, Alexandra and Joseph

Nettleton; a son, James Nettleton and his wife, Krista, of Mason

City; and their children, Kelsey and Samantha Nettleton; two

daughters Karen Nettleton of Mason City, and Mary Nettleton of

Biddeford, Maine.

teacher in the area.



Nell moved to Omaha, Neb., where she worked for Swift and Company

for over 20 years as a bookkeeper until her retirement Sept.

1, 1969.



 Nell continued to live in Omaha until ill health. She then

moved to Mason City to be closer to her family, the Halfords.



Nell was a member of the Manning United Methodist Church.



Nell is survived by three nieces, Carol Lee Halford and her

husband, Robert, of Clear Lake; Betty Newbiggen and her husband,

Don, of Spirit Lake, and Bertha Ruhde of Manning; niece-in-law,

Bev Butler and her husband, Don, of Creston; nephew-in-law, Dick

Swanson of Des Moines; three great nieces, Deb Delpierre of Des

Moines; Sara Loomis and her husband, Leo, of Des Moines, and

Jennifer Schwager and her husband, Monty, of Maple Grove, Minn.

He graduated from Rock Falls High School and Hamilton Business

College in Mason City, Iowa.



Elmer lived for several years in Mason City, Iowa, where he

was employed by Schroeder Implement.



Elmer came to Albert Lea in 1953. He worked as an accountant

for Wilson & Co. until his retirement.



On Aug. 2, 1953, he was united in marriage to Helen Hanson Nelson

at Clarks Grove.



Elmer was a member of the East Freeborn Lutheran Church.



He loved to dance and was an excellent card player.



Survivors include his stepson, Gerald and his wife, Andrea Nelson

of Wittenberg, Wis.; grandchildren, Wendy, Richard and Nils Nelson;

great-granddaughter, Kristina Nelson; sister, Emma Luecht of

Anna Margaret Boelts, the daughter of Ralph J. and Bertha K.

(Buns) Smith, was born March 3, 1905, on a farm south of Mason

City.



She attended rural schools of Bingham Township.



On Feb. 19, 1932, she was married to John William Boelts at

Albert Lea, Minn.



They farmed for 31 years in the Woden area.



Two children were born to this union, Dorothy and Kenneth.



In 1965, they retired and moved into Woden.



Due to ill health, Anna moved to the Titonka Care Center in

September of 1994.



She enjoyed doing hand-work and taking care of her garden. She

especially liked children and showered her love on them.



She was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, an honorary

member of the W.E.L.C.A. of St. John's Lutheran Church and Woden

Senior Citizens.



She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Mangle of St. Paul,

Minn.; her son, Kenneth John Boelts and his wife, Marilyn, of

Ozark, Mo.; two grandsons, Lon Mangle of St. Paul, Minn., and

Kevin Mangle and his wife, Sandy, of Maple Grove, Minn.; a brother,

Henry Arthur Smith and his wife, Leora, of Denver, Colo.; stepgrandchildren,

Wanda and James Fringer of Ozark, Mo.; David and Victoria Anderson

of League City, Texas; Mark and Cheryl Strothkamp of Rogersville,

Mo.; stepgreat-grandchildren, Kevin Fringer and Kayla Fringer,

all of Ozark, Mo., and Brian and Katy Anderson of League City,

Texas; as well as nephews, cousins and a host of friends.



She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Boelts on

March 1, 1980; a son-in-law, Gerald Mangle in 1988; her father,

Cemetery in Northwood, with the Rev. Richard Jensen of the United

Methodist Church, Northwood, officiating.



Graveside inurnment services will also be held at 2 p.m. today

for William Wayne Witcome, 50, son of Clifford and Phyllis Whitcome,

who died Nov. 11, 1996, in Bakersfield, Calif.



The family of Phyllis Corrine  Whitcome has requested that memorial

contributions be made to the Good Samaritan Care Center in Keosauqua

in her memory.



Phyllis Corrine Whitcome was born Nov. 24, 1921, in Redwood

City, Minn., the daughter of Oscar and Amy (Byram) Murset.



She attended and graduated from high school in Minneapolis,

Minn.



After completing her education, she began working for the Red

Owl Grocery in Minneapolis, Minn,. as manager of the dairy department.



She was united in marriage to Clifford Whitcome on Nov. 8, 1944.

He preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 1972.



After their marriage she moved to Dayton, Ohio, with her husband,

who was stationed in the Army.



They also lived in a series of small towns which included Ackley

and Hampton before moving to Northwood in 1960.



 They also lived in Arlington Heights, Ill., and Poughkeepsie,

N.Y., before moving to Donnelson, and then to the Good Samaritan

Care Center in Keosauqua.



She enjoyed quilting, her coffee club, reading and being active

in the nursing home, but her great love and enjoyment was her

family.



She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Northwood.



Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Sciebura of Napa, Calif.,

and Kathy Whitcome-Mitchell and her husband, Robert, of Carbondale,

Ill.; one brother, Wallace Murset of Redwood City, Calif.; as

well as other relatives and friends.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford

Whitcome, who died on Oct. 2, 1972; and her son, William Wayne

Whitcome, who died on Nov. 11, 1996.

farm in Floyd County, northwest of Nashua.

residence, following a lengthy illness.

Virgil Gaylen Colwell was born Dec. 19, 1924, in Charles City,

the son of George P. and Florence L. (Cross) Colwell Sr.



Following his high school graduation, he married Genevieve Roberts

on Aug. 25, 1946, in Charles City. Mrs. Colwell died May 25,

1982, in Mason City.



For 34 years, Mr. Colwell was employed by  the former Northwestern

Bell Telephone Company. He performed about every job with the

company, primarily a lineman and a service technician. Mr. Colwell

retired in 1981.



He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.



Living family members include a son and his wife, Steven and

Mary Ann Colwell of Jackson, Minn.; two granddaughters, Sarah

Ann Colwell of Jackson, Minn., and Dawn Ann Klinner; two stepgrandsons,

Brian Lewis of Phoenix, Ariz., and Kevin Lewis of Fairmont, Minn.;

and a brother-in-law, Wilbur Daake of Charles City.



In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Colwell was preceded

in death by a brother, George P. Colwell Jr., who was killed

in World War II; a sister, Edna Daake in 1994; and a son, Gary

a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles

City, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will

be in Calvary Cemetery.



Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at Hauser Funeral

Home, 1205 S. Main St., with a 3 p.m. rosary by St. Mary's Circle;

a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7:30 p.m., followed by a recitation

of the Rosary by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation will continue

one hour prior to the Mass on Thursday at the church.



Vernon Francis ``Bun'' Regan was born Sept. 7, 1922, in Howard

County, the son of Francis D. and Martha Dettmer Regan.



He enjoyed growing up in the country surrounding Riceville.



As a teen-ager during the depression years, he learned to make

the best of life  including his favorite dessert  peanut butter

on white bread turned over and topped with milk, sugar and applesauce.



``Bun'' graduated from Riceville High School in 1939.



He served in World War II as a member of the 17th and 82nd Airborne

Divisions in the European Theater.



On April 27, 1946, he and Elizabeth Sullivan were married in

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma.



``Bun'' will be remembered by many people in the Charles City

area as the Fuller Brush Man. In this family venture, ``Bun''

and his wife raised five children, who have many fond (and not-so-fond)

memories of the Fuller Brush days. He later worked for American

Cyanamid and Harvestore Systems.



After retiring in 1983, he spent his days refinishing furniture,

grooming his lawn, traveling, playing cards and helping his children

with their many home projects.



But his favorite pastime was fishing. His fishing boat, the

``Queen Betty,'' was the source of many happy hours.



``Bun'' was also a member of the River City Barbershop Chorus

for 15 years, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights

of Columbus.



He was Grandpa Bun to 15 grandchildren, all of whom loved him

dearly. He was always ready to play ball, play cards, sing, take

them fishing, eat ice cream, or just talk. A kinder grandpa they

couldn't imagine.



Living family members include his wife, ``Betty'' of Charles

City; two sons and their wives, Pat and Sharon Regan of Nora

Springs, and Tom ``Zip'' Regan of Lena, Ill.; and three daughters

and their husbands, Jeanne and Jerry Zwald of Garner; Gail and

Steve Castle of Warrensville, Ill., and Joyce Staebell of Cedar

Falls; a brother, Jim Regan of Indianapolis, Ind.; and two sisters,

Dorothy Lockie of Prescott Valley, Ariz., and Judy Shea of Manhattan,

Kan.



He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter,

Katie Jones.

Gene L. Johnson

MASON CITY  



Gene L. Johnson, 69, of 949 14th St. S.E., died Sunday (April

27, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.



Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. James

Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. David Anderson

officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with

full military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial

Association.



There will be no viewing. The body was cremated. The family

will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.



Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa in his memory.



Gene was born Jan. 7, 1928, in Clay County, Iowa, the son of

Oscar and Nora (Bakke) Johnson.



He was baptized and confirmed in Graettinger.



Gene served in the United States Navy from January of 1946 until

his discharge in November of 1947.



He married Marilynn Poppe on Aug. 27, 1950, in Charles City

and lived in the Charles City and Floyd area before moving to

Mason City in 1958.



Gene was a driver for Stockberger Transportation in Mason City

for 27 years, retiring in 1989.



He then went to work for Huffman Transportation driving school

bus.



Gene loved being around the kids and the kids loved him.



He also drove a few of the athletic teams in the North Iowa

area.



Gene was a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the Teamsters

and enjoyed playing golf.



Survivors include daughter, Judy Hall and her husband, Randy,

of Marshalltown; granddaughter, Jaime Hall of Marshalltown; a

sister, Arlene Cunningham of Mason City; sister, Corrine Butler

and her husband, Lyle, of Mason City; brother, Robert Johnson

and his wife, Joyce, of Mason City; a sister, Carol Piippo and

her husband, Marvin, of Mason City; sister-in-law, Betty Johnson

of Northwood; a special friend, Avis Angell of Mason City; and

many nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Virgil

G. Johnson; and one brother-in-law, Warren Cunningham.
