Glenn W. Bergland
LAKE MILLS
Glenn W. Bergland, 84, the man who was most instrumental in
bringing electricity and telephone service to Winnebago County
and surrounding areas, passed away Friday (April 18, 1997) at
his home in Naples, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May
3, at the Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger
Dykstra officiating. The body was cremated. Inurnment will be
in the Salem Lutheran Memorial Cemetery.
Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, is in charge of arrangements.
Bergland was born on a farm west of Joice on Nov. 6, 1912, to
Edward and Ingbor (Bygstol) Bergland.
He attended school at Joice and graduated from Lake Mills Community
School in 1929.
He graduated from Luther College, Decorah, with majors in mathematics,
physics and chemistry.
He married Delia Twenge on August 6, 1939, at Moorhead, Minn.
They resided in Thompson until 1963, when they moved to Lake
Mills.
They established a winter home in Naples, Fla., and following
Delia's death in 1991, Glenn sold the home in Lake Mills and
purchased a duplex in Naples, Fla., where he has spent the summer
months.
The Winnebago Rural Electric Cooperative hired Glenn as a college
student to be its project superintendent in April of 1939. His
assignment was to provide an electric distribution system for
farms in the Winnebago County area. At that time less than one
in 20 American farms had electricity and WREA had yet to install
a line or pole. Yet Bergland had his first farm hooked up in
less than a year.
Bergland went on to organize the Winnebago Rural Telephone Association
and he jointly managed the two corporations. Glenn believed in
his motto, ``Do it right and do it to last.''
In 1961 he purchased the Lake Mills Telephone Company from M.O.
Godtland and, in 1980, added cable TV.
Bergland retired from the WCTA and WREA in 1973. He sold the
Lake Mills Telephone Company and the cable TV business to Winnebago
Cooperative Telephone Association in 1982.
Bergland became known internationally as an expert in his field.
He served as a consultant for the U.S.A. Aid Program in Thailand
in 1965 and in Chile in 1968.
He served on many regional and national boards and committees.
He was appointed by President Nixon to the Rural Telephone Bank
Board in 1971, where he served two terms.
He served as president of the Iowa Telephone Association in
1974.
Berland served as president of the Board of the Organization
for the Preservation and Advancement of Small Telephone Companies
in 1975 (OPASTCO).
Bergland was a long-time member of Salem Lutheran Church, a
member of the Lake Mills Chamber of Commerce and Development
Group and was one of the original organizers of the Lake Mills
Care Center. He was a former member of the Rice Lake Golf and
Country Club where he designed the fareway watering system and
was a major contributor in the project.
Glenn was a very positive and encouraging person who touched
many peoples' lives with his kindness, caring and generosity.
The Berglands established scholarship programs at Lake Mills
Community School and Luther College.
The family is asking that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given
to the Salem Lutheran building fund or the Alzheimer Association.
Glenn is survived by one son, David and his wife, Caroline,
of Ames; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Hjalmer
and Melvin.
