Fred Frank `Rusty' Claussen

MASON CITY  



Fred Frank ``Rusty'' Claussen Sr., 69, of 1322 N. Charles Place,

died Friday (March 28, 1997) at the Veterans Hospital, Des Moines.



Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Pine

Hills Cemetery, Davenport.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Runge

Funeral Home, 828 E. Kimberly, Davenport.

S. Connecticut Ave., Mason City, Iowa 50401.



Fred F. Claussen Sr. was born Feb. 24, 1928, son of Mabel and

John Claussen in Grand Rapids, Mich.



He moved with his family to Davenport and attended school there.



He served in the United States Navy during World War II and

spent time in the Philippines.



He was an auto body repair man for over 20 years in Iowa, Illinois

and Michigan.



Fred came to the Mason City area in 1975. He worked at several

body shops in the area, one of which was Sedars.



He drove truck for City Delivery from 1982 to 1985. He had

to retire for health reasons in 1985.



After his retirement, he became an active participant with the

R.S.V.P. (Retired Senior Volunteer Programs). He enjoyed helping

with the Senior Meals program and other duties at the North Community

Action Center where he had been for several years. He was an

active volunteer at the South Community Action Center where he

had been for several years, averaging between 50 and 60 hours

a week at each place.



Fred was married several times.



Fred is survived by nine children; five sons, Fred Jr. of Davenport,

Michael of Nevada, Russell of Nevada, Thomas of Michigan and

Bruce Claussen of Norfolk, Va.; four daughters, Sandra Benson

and her husband, Dave, of Arizona; Barbara Wright of Arizona;

Michelle Osborne, Muldrow, Oklah, and Dawn Eldridge and her husband,

Bob Eldridge II of Mason City; four brothers, Rudy and his wife,

Kay, of Bettendorf, Ray and his wife, Dixie of Davenport, Eddie

of New York, and John of Missouri; two sisters, Vicky Mier of

Davenport, and Rose Baccon of Mt. Joy, Iowa; 12 grandchildren;

and seven great-grandchildren.



Fred was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leo,

Harry, and August; and one sister, Beleda.

Martha K. Davis

MASON CITY  



Martha K. Davis, 80, of Mason City, died Sunday (March 30, 1997)

at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., following a brief illness.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the

Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. David

R. Shogren from Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Interment

will follow at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.



Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral

Home.



Martha was born on May 25, 1916, the daughter of Gottlieb and

Minnie (Schmidt) Uetz in Charles City.



She attended classes in the Charles City School District and

later graduated from Charles City High School.



On Dec. 17, 1945, Martha was united in marriage to Jay M. Davis

in Bethany, Mo.



Martha was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 1328 and the V.F.W.

Post #733.



She enjoyed eating with friends at the Country Kitchen, playing

Hearts and listening to the Statler Brothers and attending her

grandchildren and great-grandchildren's school programs.



When she wasn't working at Classic Cleaners in Mason City, she

could be found making candy, especially chocolates, helping with

carpentry work, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren,

great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.



Martha is survived by two sons, Kenneth and his wife, Sheryl

Davis, of Onalaska, Wis., and Richard and his wife, Doris Wand

of Mason City; two daughters, Alice and her husband, Merlyn Bohnsack

of Mason City, and Opal Miller of Mason City; a twin sister,

Marie Ross of Charles City; sister-in-law, Anne Uetz of Charles

City; grandchildren, Scott Davis and his fiance, Verena Beutel;

Sarah Davis, Judith Colby, Jolene Fank, Donald Davis, Terry Kunzman,

Dennis Stauffacher and Mona Werstein; 10 great-grandchildren;

and five great-great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jay M. Davis

in 1975; and two brothers, Ernest and Elmer Uetz.

Moines.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Thursday

Ruloff ``Bob'' Roberts, 83, formerly of Clear Lake, died Monday

(March 31, 1997) at Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the

funeral home, and after 9 a.m. until time of services on Thursday.

Dr. Gerald L. Brady

LINCOLN, Neb. 



Dr. Gerald L. ``Jerry'' Brady, 66, of 1215 S. 40th St., Lincoln,

formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Monday (March 31, 1997) at

home.



Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Rising

Sun Church of Christ, Des Moines, Iowa. Burial will be in the

Rising Sun Cemetery.



Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at Iles Grandview Park

Funeral Home, Des Moines, Iowa, with the family receiving friends

from 6 to 8 p.m.



Gerald L. Brady was born Sept. 17, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa.



Dr. Brady was raised in Des Moines, Iowa, and lived there through

the first two years of college.



He graduated from the University of Iowa Medical School in June

of 1960, took his residency in Michigan, and started general

practice in Mason City, Iowa.



After several years, he took a three-year residency in psychiatry

at the Cherokee State Hospital. He then went to the Veterans

Administration Hospital in Knoxville, Iowa, before going to the

Veterans Administration Hospital in Lincoln, where he was for

13 years. He retired in 1994.



He was a member of the Iowa Psychiatric Association.



He loved gardening, working in the yard and bird watching.



Survivors include his wife, Marie Brady of Lincoln, Neb.; four

sons, David Brady, Chicago, Ill.; Mark Cory, Mason City; David

Cory, St. Joseph, Mo., and Jonathan Brady, Las Vegas, Nev.; three

daughters, Diana Spellman, St. Louis, Mo.; Ruby Northrup, Perry,

and Jill O'Malley-Hurley, Lincoln, Neb.; four sisters, D. Yvonne

Coe of Des Moines, Iowa; Marilyn Helmick of Montezuma, Iowa;

Virginia Shannon of Des Moines, Iowa, and Colene Lawnsdale, Galesburg,

Ill.; and 11 grandchildren.

Phyllis A. Arbuckle

MASON CITY  



Phyllis A. Arbuckle, 80, formerly of the Mason City area, died

Saturday (March 31, 1997) at Des Moines General Hospital.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton

Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. David R. Shogren

of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be

in Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.



Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Thursday

at the funeral home.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials

to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 Second St. S.E., Mason City.



Phyllis was born April 23, 1916, the daughter of William Henry

and Alice Estelle (Davey) Runger in Rockford.



As Phyllis was growing up, she attended the Mason City school

system.



From a young age, she enjoyed dancing and shopping, especially

for clothes and furniture.



She also did a lot of canning of vegetables that she raised

in her garden.



Phyllis had a talent for interior decorating and floral arranging.

She was handy at doing odd jobs around the house as well.



She liked playing games such as 500, pinochle, cribbage and

Yahtzee.



When she lived in Webster City, she liked to go to Briggs Woods

to watch nature and all it had to offer.



Phyllis was very active in the Senior Citizens and R.S.V.P.

in Webster City.



Phyllis is survived by two daughters, Gloria and her husband,

Ellis Hauser of Des Moines, and Patricia and her husband, Robert

Nettleton of Simi Valley, Calif.; three sons, Mathias and his

wife, Bea Miller of Fremont, Calif.; Robert Arbuckle of Iowa

City, and Richard Arbuckle of Marion; one sister, Shirley and

her husband, Jim Moor of Hampton; six grandchildren, Mark Hauser,

Shelly Bleam, Jeff Nettleton, Doug Miller, Deanne Miller and

Jeni Arbuckle; and six great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Harry

Runger; two stepbrothers, Robert and Les Runger; and one granddaughter,

Debra Hauser.

Ruloff ``Bob'' Roberts, 83, formerly of Clear Lake, died Monday

(March 31, 1997) at Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held  at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. David

Van Wingerden officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park

Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors by the Clear Lake

VFW.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke

Colonial Chapel and after 9 a.m. Thursday until time of services.



Bob was born Dec. 2, 1913, in rural Clarksville, the son of

James O. and Lulu Mae (Barr) Roberts.



Bob served in the Navy during World War II and spent his service

time in the Islands and Iceland. After the service, he farmed

with his younger brother, Richard.



Bob married Anita Francis Richards in 1955. They farmed south

of Clear Lake until his retirement and moved into Clear Lake

in 1973. He drove a U.S. Mail truck part time.



Bob enjoyed traveling, hunting, gardening, helping people, traveling

and spending winters in Weslaco, Texas.



Bob was a member of United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, and

the Clear Lake VFW.



Bob is survived by twin daughters, Barbara Sterzing and her

husband, Peter, Marshalltown, and Bobbi Lindquist and her husband,

Ted, Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Jodi Lindquist, Randy Lindquist,

Susan Beckner, Ann Luithle, Ozzie Lindquist and Erich Sterzing;

nine great-grandchildren, Gretchen, Sarah, Jack, Jenny, Nichole,

Stephanie, Zach, Jacob and Clint; one brother, Richard Roberts;

and five sisters, Elva Bringolf, Roberta Huelman, Bernice McCoy,

Mildred Roberts and Ruea Roberts.



Bob was preceded ion death by parents; wife; three brothers,

James Oliver Robert, Paul Roberts and Harold Roberts; and two

sisters, Esther Roberts and Olive Phipps.

will be the church cemetery.

Rose K. Hauptly was born Jan. 25, 1911, in St. Benedict.



Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Eischen, Wesley; five

grandsons; and eight great-grandchildren.

Amanda Riekena, 89, of Forest City, died Tuesday (April 1,

1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United

Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial

will be in Bingham Township Cemetery, Woden.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Petersen

Lund Funeral Home.



Amanda Riekena was born Jan. 26, 1908, in Bingham Township,

Hancock County.



Survivors include five daughters, Vivian Pletcher, Britt; Arlene

Schmidt, Garner; Lorraine Bohn, Mason City; Janice Marshall,

Austin, Minn., and Marilyn Haley, Ham Lake, Minn.; two sons,

Kenneth Riekena of Mason City, and Vernon Riekena of Racine,

Wis.; 29 grandchildren;  46 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson;

and five sisters, Martha Lounsberry, Ames; Minnie Butler, Albert

Lea, Minn.; Marie Hodson, Forest City; Letha Carver, Mason City,

and Alma Mitchell, Buffalo Center.



She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, five

brothers, one son and one daughter.

at the home of his daughter in Zearing.

Titonka.



Vistation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-

Murphy-Scaaf Funeral Home and also one hour prior to services at

the church.



Earl Zwiefel was born Nov. 30, 1917, at Titonka.



Survivors include two children, Corinne Olson, Zearing, and

Kermit Zwiefel, Titonka; stepchildren, Robert Ortman of Burt

and Sandra Gustafson of Cherokee; six stepgrandchildren; and

two sisters, Vernelle Bilsborough of Titonka and Lela Schlei

of Fenton.



He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, two infant

grandsons and one brother.

Funeral with the Rev. Luther Peterson officiating.



There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be in Harlan Cemetery,

rural Dumont.



Minnie Harlan was born March 4, 1925, in Alden.



Survivors include two daughters, Neilla Banse, Sutherland, and

Georgia Mulford, Mason City; three sons, Michael Harlan, Albuquerque,

N.M.; David Harlan, Cyrstal Lake, and Dwight Harlan, Fertile;

one sister, Margaret Kirkpatrick, Waterloo; two brothers, Jerry

Winther, Iowa Falls, and Tom Winther of Wisconsin; 13 grandchildren;

and four great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by parents, husband, son, brother

and grandson.

(April 1, 1997) at her home.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United

Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.



Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Conrad Cemetery,

Conrad.



Following graveside services, friends are asked to come to Conrad

United Methodist Church to visit with the family.



Friends are asked to stop by the Numelin House at 404 19th St.

W., Clear Lake, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today to visit with the

family.



The family suggests memorials to the Lucille F. Friday Memorial

Fund.



Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and the Johnson

Funeral Home, Conrad, are in charge of arrangements.



Lucille was born Nov. 29, 1920, in Diller, Neb., the daughter

of Lewis and Amy (Zittle) Findling.



She graduated from Diller High Schoopl in 1937 as Salutatorian.



Lucille moved to Conrad. She married Dale D. Friday on Dec.

8, 1938.



They owned a family business in Conrad, called Friday's Services

for over 40 years.



They spent their winters in Marathon, Fla., where she enjoyed

deep sea fishing with her husband and friends.



Her joys were gardening, flowers, the outdoors, dancing and

reading. Her foremost love was always her family and grandchildren.



She was noted for her terrific sense of humor. Lucille moved

to Clear Lake in 1979.



Lucille is survived by her daughter, Jerilyn Sue Numelin and

her husband, Wilbur, Clear Lake; a son, Dennis Dale Friday and

his wife, Sherry, Washington, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Lori

Keen, Jay Friday, Chad Friday, Nathan Friday, Tye Numelin, Tory

Numelin and Todd Numelin; two great-grandchildren, Brittany and

Jon Keen; two brothers, Cecil Findling and Kenneth Findling and

his wife, Lucille, both of Oregon.



Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1978;

one sister, Luella Fielder; and one brother, Clarence Findling.

Rev. David Shogren officiating. Interment will be in Memorial

Park Cemetery.

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a 7 p.m. White Shrine

service, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.



Memorials may be given to the Georgetta J. Withers Memorial

Georgetta June Withers was born Sept. 14, 1916, in Canton, S.D.,

the daughter of Ernest and Ella (Raines) Madden.



Georgetta graduated from Canton High School in 1934 and then

attended secretarial school for a short time.



Georgetta married L.J. Withers on Aug. 12, 1938, in Baudette,

Minn.



Georgetta and L.J. moved to Mason City in 1942. Georgetta was

a homemaker and had resided in Mason City ever since.



She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and the Priscilla

Circle. She was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem.



Survivors include three daughters, Jane Withers, Kansas City,

Mo.; Judy Daniels, San Antonio, Texas, and Diann Sewald, Anchorage,

Alaska; three sons, Jon Withers, Hallendale, Fla.; David Withers,

Mason City, and Dennis Withers and his wife, Kim, Cannon City,

Colo.; eight grandchildren, Lisa Sewald, Denver, Colo.; Steve

Daniels, San Antonio, Texas; Cheri Sanchez and her husband, Robert,

San Antonio, Texas; Carolyn Daniels, San Antonio, Texas; Scott

Withers, Springfield, Ohio; Amber Withers, Cannon City, Colo.;

Brandon Withers, Cannon City, Colo., and Chris Withers, Japan;

Mervyl was born Nov. 9, 1905, at Rockwell, a daughter of James

H. and Jeanette (McMillan) Brown.



She graduated from Rockwell High School and attended Iowa State

University.



She was married to Donald Russell Paul on Jan. 1, 1927, at Laurel.



Mervyl came to Mason City from Tiburon, Calif., in 1992 and

resided at the Willows for four years.



Survivors include nephews, George H. Brown  and his wife, Patricia,

Waterloo, and James R. Brown and his wife, Helen, Mason City.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Jan.

19, 1991; an infant son, Charles; sisters, Maude, Agnes and Eppie;

in Des Moines.



She was a preschool teacher at Samuelson School.

Margo Wille Johnson, 49, of Seattle, Wash., formerly of Klemme,

died Sunday (March 30, 1997) at Virginia Mason Hospital, Seattle,

Wash.

& Reformed Church in Garner, with the Rev. Darrell Weber officiating.

Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Margo Mae Wille Johnson, the daughter of Raymond Erwin and Margie

Mae (Blumer) Wille, was born Sept. 8, 1947, at Garner.



After graduating from Klemme High School in 1965, she attended

Iowa State University at Ames where she received her Bachelor

of Science degree in computer science and mathematics.



Margo was married to Ross Johnson at Immanuel Reformed United

Church of Christ, Klemme, on March 2, 1968.



Margo worked for Pioneer Data Systems in Des Moines after her

graduation from Iowa State University.



She later worked for Park Davis Pharmaceutical Company in Detroit,

Mich., and at General Motors Corporation, during which time she

earned a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology from Mary Grove

College in Detroit, Mich.



She moved to Toledo, Ohio, where she served as hospital administrator

at St. Vincent's Hospital and earned a Master's of Business Administration

Degree from the University of Michigan.



In 1990, she moved to Seattle, Wash., to serve as business administrator

at Virginia Mason Clinic.



Throughout her life, Margo enjoyed traveling, reading, genealogy

and visiting her family and friends.



She was continually educating herself, and had an intense thirst

for knowledge.



She was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, the Seattle Chorale

Society and MENSA.



She is survived by her father, Raymond E. Wille and his wife,

Alice, of Hampton; two sisters, Marian Greiman and her husband,

Randy, of Garner, and Jodie Bredlow and her husband, Gerry, of

Spencer; two stepsisters, Sandra Murphy of Hampton and Kim Whipple

of Hampton; a stepbrother, Mark Maier of St. Louis, Mo.; and

five nieces and nephews, Shana Greiman, Stacy Greiman, Dustin

Bredlow, Kelly Bredlow and Ashley Bredlow.



She was preceded in death by her mother, Margie Wille, on Oct.

12, 1974.

Amanda Rieka was born in Bingham Township, Hancock County, on

Jan. 26, 1908, the daughter of Herman and Gebka (Gayken) Helm.



She received her education in rural school near her home and

attended high school.



On Aug. 18, 1927, she was married to Henry Riekena in Algona.



The couple made their home in Woden for a few years, then moved

to Forest City where Henry worked for Gjellefald Construction.



Amanda was a loving mother and enjoyed caring for her family.



She was a talented seamstress, sewing all her children's clothes

as they grew up.



Gardening kept her busy also, but she found time to enjoy baseball,

being an avid Cubs fan.



She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Forest City.



She is survived by her husband, Henry Riekena of Forest City;

two sons, Kenneth Riekena of Mason City, and Vernon Riekena and

his wife, Carol, of Racine, Wis.; five daughters and their spouses,

Vivian and Don Pletcher, Britt; Arlene and George Schmidt, Garner;

Lorraine and Shelly Bohn, Mason City; Janice and Jim Marshall,

Austin, Minn., and Marilyn and Tom Haley, Ham Lake, Minn.; five

sisters, Martha Lounsberry, Ames; Minnie Butler, Albert Lea,

Amalia Elizabeth (Huenemann) Lemke was born in Kossuth County

on April 20, 1898, to the Rev. Jacob and Matilda Huenemann. She

was one of four children in the family which lived in northern

Iowa.



After teaching in rural schools in Wesley, Ventura and Meservey,

she married Ferdinand August Lemke of Meservey on Sept. 27, 1929.

They had two children, Ferd Lemke and Elizabeth (Lemke) Lynde.



She lived most of her years in the Meservey area, until she

moved to Crystal Lake, Ill., in November of 1995.



She is survived by her two children and their spouses, Ferd

and Bethel Lemke of Meservey, and Elizabeth and Charles Lynde

of Crystal Lake, Ill.; five grandchildren, Beth Ann (Scott) Lemke

Newhard, Kay Denise Lemke Kasper, Charles (Andrea) Eric Lynde,

Stephen (Christine) Boyd Lynde and Lisa Elaine Lynde; and seven

great-grandchildren, Robert Beran, Zachariah Kasper, Ezekiel

Kasper, Diana Lynde, Amalia Lynde, Cameron Lynde and Victor Lynde.



She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her

brother and sisters, Victor (Drusilla) Huenemann, Martha Hunemann,

and Stella (Ray) Huenemann Haberkamp.



She passed away April 1, 1997, at home in her room in Crystal

Lake, Ill. She is now in the presence of her Lord and Savior,

James A. Pappas, 50, of Mason City, died peacefully Tuesday

(April 1, 1997) at the Veterans Hospital, Des Moines.

Jim was born April 27, 1946, in Mason City, son of George and

Elizabeth (Weitzel) Pappas.



Jim attended classes in Mason City and graduated from Mason

City High School.



He served in the United States Army for two years, after which

he worked at the Mason City Brick & Tile for nine years.



He then worked for Andrews Concrete in Clear Lake until the

time of his illness in 1987.



Jim is survived by one sister, Helen Gray of Mason City; one

brother, George Pappas and his wife, Priscilla Pappas, Mason

City; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Agnes Carlson;

one brother, Gus Pappas; and his other sister, Babe Dirksen.

Verl Harness was born on Dec. 26, 1916, at Ottumwa, Iowa, to

He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps during World War II and

was in the Southeastern Training Command until going to Italy

in January of 1945.



He was an owner/operator of an A&W Root Beer Drive-In located

in Ottumwa, Ankeny and at Mason City, Iowa.



Mr. Harness was a charter member of the Ankeny, Iowa Kiwanis

Club, and now a member of the Russellville Kiwanis Club. He was

a member of the American Legion Post #20 and the VFW Post #2283.

He was a 50 year member of the Agency, Iowa, Masonic Lodge and

was a member of the Des Moines Consistory.



He is survived by his wife, Louise Rominger Harness of Russellville.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John

Lynn Harness.

Mabel married John Bitker on July 15, 1936, at the Little Brown

Church, Nashua. They farmed near Kensett and retired from the

farm in 1948.



They owned and operated a four plex in Manly. They moved to

Turlock and Ledo Island, Newport Beach, Calif., for 10 years

then moved to Clear Lake in 1961.



Mabel enjoyed traveling and entertaining.



She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake.



Mabel is survived by two daughters, Mildred Clemenson, Kensett,

and Geraldine Kaloplasto, Lowell, Ark.; son, Johnnie Bitker and

his wife, Marian, Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Karen Bitker,

Oceanside, Calif.; two sisters, Gaya Gasper, Vallijo, Calif.,

and Alida Stephens, Cleveland, Tenn.; one brother, Engval Johnson,

Minneapolis, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren;

and several great-great-grandchildren.



Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter,

Gladys Dahl; son, Maurice Bitker; son-in-law, Gunder Clemenson;

Gunder Christian Clemenson, 80, rural Kensett, died Friday (March

21, 1997) in Mesa, Ariz.

at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with Rev. Selmer

Gunder was born Oct. 12, 1916, in Erie, Minn., the son of George

and Burgina Clemenson and was the third of 11 children.



When he was 5 years old, the family moved to Manly, where they

resided for many years.



He joined the U.S. Navy in 1936 and served on the U.S.S. Medusa

as a ship fitter.



Gunder married Mildred Bitker on March 11, 1940.



They lived in Oakland, Calif., and Norfolk, Va,. until 1947

when they returned to Iowa.



They bought a farm in Kensett where they still reside.



Since their retirement in 1977, they have spent three winters

in Texas and Arizona. In 1990, they made Mesa, Ariz., their permanent

winter home.



Gunder is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mildred Clemenson,

rural  Kensett; daughter, Marcia Patton and her husband, Ron,

Menmonie, Wis.; and grandchildren, Lacey and Brandon; as well

as two brothers, Orvil Clemenson, Chula Vista, Calif., and Curtis

Clemenson, Des Moines; four sisters, Bonnie Clark, Des Moines;

June Leachman, Monroe, La.; Myrtle Edwards, Denver, Colo., and

Arlene Allen, Des Moines; and numerous nieces and nephews.



Gunder was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gladys

Trenton; and brothers, Ernest, Ray and Milton Clemenson.

Norlayne R. Burhite was born March 21, 1921, in Osage, daughter

of Hubert and Doris (Gardner) Taylor.



She married Gerald Wayne Burhite on March 24, 1940, at the Little

Brown Church, Nashua.



Norlayne grew up in Osage and graduated from Osage High School

in 1938.



She served as personal director and assistant administrator

at both the Park Hospital and North Iowa Medical Center from

1957 to 1979.



She enjoyed camping, playing the organ, genealogy and living

by the river.



She was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of

the American Revolution.



She was a member of the United Methodist Church being active

in the United Methodist Church Women and the Methodist Youth

Fellowship.



Survivors include one son, Gary Burhite and his wife, Norine,

Derby, Kan.; three grandchildren, Captain Bradley Burhite, Goldsboro,

N.C.; Cynthia Ranco and her husband, Joseph, of Raymond, Maine;

and Brent Burhite, a college student in Wichita, Kan.; and one

sister, Lois Smith, Wichita Falls, Texas.



She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Gerald,

on March 21, 1996.

Herman Johannes Hempen was born on May 23, 1906, in Dike, the

son of Johan and Rena (Saathoff) Hempen.



He attended and received his education in the rural country

schools near Dike.



He was united in marriage to Annie Justina Gerloff on Dec. 29,

1931, in the Lincoln Center Christian Reform Church in Grundy

Center, by the Rev. Sherman. She preceded him in death on July

15, 1994.



After their marriage, they farmed in the Grundy County area

for 20 years until moving to the Northwood area in 1952, continuing

to farm three miles south of town until retiring from farming

in 1972.



After his retirement, he became a full-time carpenter, and once

again a hired hand on other farms, moving into Northwood in December

of 1981.



He enjoyed having coffee at the Corner Post Restaurant in Northwood,

enjoyed keeping up to date with the news in and around Northwood,

going to Hanlontown's Threshing Days, auctions and farming, but his

great love and enjoyment was his family and relatives and visiting

with his friends and neighbors.



He was a member of the United Methodist Church and trustee in

his congregation until his death, a former member of the Lincoln

Christian Reform Church in Grundy Center, Bolan United Methodist

Church, and was former church treasurer in Bolan. In his early

years, he was the county school director.



Left to cherish his memory is a son, Harlan Hempen of Cedar

Falls; four daughters, Marrian ``Penny'' Bradwell and her husband,

Robert, of Hot Springs, Ark.; Arvilla ``Ann'' Young and her husband,

Darrell, of Seattle, Wash.; Ruth Grosland and her husband, Paul,

of Austin, Minn., and Linda Loken and her husband, Ronald, of

Northwood; 10 grandchildren, Connie Bowers of Norfolk, Neb.;

David Hempen of Cedar Falls; Linsley Bradwell of Hot Springs,

Ark.; Jodene Black of Olympia, Wash.; Kim Crotty of Seattle,

Wash.; Troy Young of Seattle, Wash.; Daniel Grosland of Owatonna,

Minn.; Michelle Phillips of Bloomington, Minn.; Rodney Loken

of Northwood, and Robin Hopperstad of Northwood; 10 great-grandchildren,

3, 1997) at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Orval Henry Kingery, 84, of 305 N. Main, died Thursday (April

3, 1997) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United

Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gene Burry officiating. Burial

will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Reid's Funeral

Chapel, with a 7 p.m. public Scripture service and will contine

one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials

to the Orval H. Kingery Memorial Fund, care of the family.



Orval Henry Kingery was born Dec. 17, 1912, in Union Township,

Floyd County.



Survivors include his wife, Alice, of Greene; two daughters,

Mary Aswegan of Nashua and Bertha Smith of Shell Rock; two sons,

Eldred Kingery of Buffalo, N.Y., and Leroy Kingery of Douglas,

Wyo.; 18 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren;

four stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.



He was preceded in death by his parents, three sons and one

brother.
