Harry T. Andersen

MASON CITY 



Harry T. Andersen, 82, of 16205 310th St., died Tuesday (April

8, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity

Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth

Hatland and the Rev. Roger Katz officiating. Burial will be in

Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.



Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial

Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There

will be further visitation one hour prior to services on Friday

at the church.



Harry T. Andersen was born on Dec. 5, 1914, at Inwood, a son

of Otto and Maren (Nielson) Andersen.



He married Marian A. ``Babe'' Andersen on April 1, 1939, at

Waterloo.



Harry worked at Jacob E. Decker and Sons, and later Armour Food

Company for 40 years.



He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting. He looked forward

to his yearly fishing trips to Canada.



Harry enjoyed playing cards. In earlier years, he played softball

on several area teams. He especially loved spending time with

his kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.



He will be sadly missed by his wife, Marian Andersen, Mason

City; one son, Tomyas Andersen and his wife, Carol, Fort Madison;

three daughters, Sandy Sharp, Mason City; Marsha Balek and her

husband, Pat, Sheffield; and Melode Balek, Nora Springs; his

grandchildren, Dawn Merrick and her husband, Jim, Clear Lake;

Lisa Pattschull and her husband, Ted, Mason City; Brad Andersen,

Denver, Colo.; Todd Andersen, Orange City, Calif.; Jason Andersen

and Carrie, Mason City; Brenda Balek, Mason City; Christopher

Balek and his wife, Abbie, Sheffield; Mike Balek, Sheffield;

Jamie Balek, Nora Springs; Amy Balek, Nora Springs; three great-

grandchildren,

Tyler Smith, Parker Pattschull and Megan Merrick; one brother,

Ernest Andersen and his wife, Marion, Mason City; two sisters,

Lily Imlay, Clear Lake, and Betty Jean Hard and her husband,

Ernest, Lakota; and many nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Harry Dean

Andersen; five sisters, Edna Rish, Elsie McIlhatton, Leona VerHelst,

Clara Andersen and Stella Andersen; and six brothers, Fred, Martin,

Clarence, Lars, Otto and Walter Andersen.

James R. Jorgensen

THORNTON 



James R. Jorgensen, 64, of Thornton, died Wednesday (April

9, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul

Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Robert Hetrick officiating.

Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Grarup Funeral

Home.



James R. Jorgensen was born on Aug. 14, 1932, in Rockwell, the

son of Raymond and Clara (Oeltjenbrun) Jorgensen.



He attended country schools and graduated from Sheffield High

School in 1950.



Following school, he began working as a carpenter with the Beck

Construction Company and later for Decker and Sons in Mason City.



He served his country during the Korean Conflict receiving the

Korean Service Medal, the Bronze Service Stars, United Nations

Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service

Medal.



Following his discharge in 1954, he was united in marriage to

Doris Cunningham on June 17, 1956, in Our Savior's Lutheran Church

in Mason City.



They made their home in Thornton where he worked as a school

janitor until moving to Clear Lake, where he worked for Northern

Natural Gas.



In 1963, they started farming and in 1970, they purchased a

farm southeast of Thornton.



James enjoyed watching college basketball and football, especially

following the Hawkeyes, playing cards and spending time with

his grandchildren.



He was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Thornton

where he held various offices and the Thornton American Legion.



He is survived by his wife, Doris of Thornton; one daughter,

Judy Price and her husband, Brad, of Marshalltown; one son, James

L. Jorgensen and his wife, Sibyl, of Thornton; two grandchildren;

and one sister, Sharon Dodge and her husband, Wayne, of Mason

City.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Jessie B. Frohling, 42, of Dows, died Tuesday (April 8, 1997)

at home.



Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the United

Church of Rowan, with the Rev. JoAn Lent Skyrme officiating.

The body will be cremated after the services. Graveside services

will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Graceland Cemetery, Rowan.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Willim Funeral

Home, Clarion, and one hour prior to services at the church.



Memorials may be given to Wright County Hospice.



Jessie Frohling was born May 22, 1954, in Mount Ayr.



Survivors include her husband, Randall H. Frohling of Dows;

two sons, Guy and Luke, both at home; her mother and stepfather,

Marceline and Charles Binau, Shenandoah; one brother, Guy Irvin

Jr., Villisca; two stepbrothers, Earl Booher of Yorktown, and

Charles Binau Jr. of Shenandoah; and three stepsisters, Mary

Lou Ellifson, Red Oak; Thelma Wright and Connie Dawson, both

of Shenandoah.



She was preceded in death by her father.

(April 5, 1997) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Lyle A. Hickman was born Sept. 29, 1914, in Grundy County.



Survivors include six children, Norman Hickman of Grundy Center;

Larry Hickman of Waterloo; Lillian Wheat of Cedar Falls; Arlon

Hickman of Marshalltown; Kayrene Baie of Marshalltown, and Charlett

Grimm of Marshalltown; one sister, Dorothy Eastman of Marshalltown;

several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Allen S. Hendrickson

MASON CITY  



Allen S. Hendrickson, 81, of Mason City, died Tuesday (April

8, 1997) from complications of Alzheimer's Disease at the Crestview

Manor Care Center, Webster City.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Our Saviour's

Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., with the Rev. Joel Dahlen

officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military

honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.



Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer

Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and one hour prior to services

on Friday at the church.



Allen S. Hendrickson was born Jan. 26, 1916, at Hubbard, the

son of Silas Mead and Anna (Heng) Hendrickson.



He attended and graduated from Mason City High School. After

high school, he attended and graduated from Hamilton Business

College.



He was employed by Lehigh Cement Plant and then entered the

U.S. Army, serving his country for two years.



After his service, he returned to Mason City to work at Lehigh

and remained there for 40 years before his retirement.



He was united in marriage to Carol M. Follmuth on Dec. 7, 1940,

at West Union.



He enjoyed collecting rocks, fishing and hunting with his dog,

and gardening.



He resided at his daughter Joanne's home in Webster City prior

to moving to the Crestview Manor Care Center.



He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church serving as

a deacon, teaching Sunday school and holding many offices at

the church. He was also a member of the VFW Post #733, Mason

City.



Survivors include two daughters, Joanne Reaman and her husband,

Terry, Webster City, and Karen Runge and her husband, David,

Carroll; one son, Mark Hendrickson and his wife, Cindy, Newton;

six grandchildren, Frederic Reaman; Heidi Von Feldt and her husband,

Mark; Ingrid Runge; Bryan Hendrickson, Jacob Hendrickson and

Jennifer Hendrickson; two brothers, Merritt Hendrickson and his

wife, Harriet, Lexington, Neb., and Harold Hendrickson and his

wife, Ann, Appleton, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Carol,

on Oct. 3, 1993.

Agnes Formanek Sweet

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. 



Agnes Formanek Sweet, 93, of Spring Valley,  died Monday (April

7, 1997) at Stanford Court Nursing Center, La Mesa.



The daughter of Frank and Stella Falada, she was born Jan. 10,

1904, at Duncan, Iowa.



She was raised and educated at Duncan, Iowa.



She married Frank Formanek in 1926. He passed away in 1940.



She married Carriel Sweet in 1945. He passed away in 1980.



She moved to California in 1955.



Agnes is suvived by four daughters, Joan Gillan of Cedar Falls,

Iowa, Charlotte and Ken Olson of Mason City, Iowa; Helen and

Al Winters of Lemon Grove, and Stella and Bob Parsons of San

Diego; three sons, Jerome and Erma Formanek of Waterloo, Iowa;

Francis and Mary Formanek of Lemon Grove, and Ralph and Nancy

Formanek of Sun City; 32 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren;

and five great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Emma Zrostlik

of Garner, Iowa.



She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two

brothers and one sister.

Calif. 92104 was in charge of arrangements.

Myron Martinson was born Aug. 25, 1906, in Decorah.



Survivors include his wife, Ellen Martinson of Forest City;

two daughters, Chick Thurston, Forest City, and Mary Ann Evans,

Albert Lea, Minn.; one son, Dale Martinson, Radcliffe; nine grandchildren;

17 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Wolfe, Eau Claire,

Wis.



He was preceded in death by his parents,  two sisters and four

brothers.

Esther W. Elling, 87, of Hampton, died Wednesday (April 9, 1997)

at the Sheffield Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel

United Church of Christ, Latimer, with the Rev Richard Zulauf

officiating. Burial will be in the Marion Center Cemetery, rural

Latimer.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Sietsema

Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.



Esther W. Elling was born Dec. 2, 1909, rural Franklin County,

Marion Township.



Survivors include two brothers, Elmer Hopkey, Coronado, Calif.,

and LaVern Hopkey, Latimer.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother.

Harold Adrian Moklestad

CRYSTAL LAKE 



Harold Adrian Moklestad, 84, of Crystal Lake, died Thursday

(April 3, 1997) at his winter home in Mission, Texas.



The body will be cremated and the family will return to Crystal

Lake for a memorial service to be held at a later date at Calvary

Lutheran Church.



Harold was born on May 14, 1912, and raised on a farm east of

Forest City. He attended country school south of Pilot Knob and

graduated from Forest City High School.



He was among the first to attain the rank of Eagle Scout in

the Forest City area. Harold continued his education and graduated

from Waldorf College.



Harold moved to Estherville and purchased a restaurant called

the Grand Cafe. He married Marjorie Martinson from Lake Mills.

The restaurant location was moved and renamed Harold's Ice Cream

Store affectionately called ``Moke's'' by the customers.



He served in World War II with a bakery company in the South

Pacific. Harold returned to Estherville to join his brother Loren

in the restaurant business for many years.



In the early 1950s, he purchased the Palace of Sweets in Forest

City and moved back to his home town. Many still remember the

homemade candy and caramel apples.



The restaurant was sold in the early 1960s and he concentrated

his attention on coin operated equipment and vending machines.



Harold married Rose Ambroson in 1965 and continued working in

the amusement business until 1974, when he retired.



Retirement for Harold was doing what he liked to do, building

and remodeling, buying, selling and trading, doing something

with his hands and occupying his mind. His last project was the

Crystal Lake Flea Market which he and Rose operated until his

health failed.



He is survived by his wife, Rose; one son, John and his wife,

Lois of Crystal Lake; one stepdaughter, Donica Moore and her

husband, Jim, of Tulsa, Okla.; and two stepsons, Ron Ambroson

of Forest City, and Tom Ambroson and his wife, Margaret, of Wilmington,

Del. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Appelquist of Urbandale;

two sisters-in-law, Joyce Moklestad of Estherville and Viola

Moklestad of Forest City; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.



Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife,

Marjorie; two brothers, Raymond and Loren; and one grandson,

Brad Ambroson.

Evelyn M. Knudson

Evelyn M. Knudson, 79, of 371 Highway 9, died Wednesday (April

9, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the

Fertile Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Roger Kampstra officiating.



Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Blairsburg

Cemetery, Blairsburg.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one

hour before services on Saturday at the church.



The family suggest s memorials be given to the Evelyn M. Knudson

Memorial Fund.



Evelyn was born in rural Hamilton County, the daughter of Arthur

and Lucille (Farley) Chantrill.



She graduated from Blairsburg High School, Blairsburg, in 1937.



Evelyn married Henry Knudson on Sept. 12, 1937, in Blairsburg.



They farmed together near Williams until 1942, then moved to

rural Glenville, Minn., where they farmed until 1953.



They then farmed in Fertile until 1968, when they retired from

farming.



After her retirement from farming, Evelyn worked at the Fertile

Library and continued to work in the new library until her retirement

in the mid 1980s as the librarian.



She enjoyed collecting cookbooks and cooking for her family.



Evelyn was a member of Fertile Lutheran Church and the Fertile

Garden Club.



Evelyn is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann DeArmand and her

husband, Richard, Surprise, Ariz.; three sons, Lloyd Knudson

Sr. and his wife, Loni, Fertile; Lyle Knudson and his wife, Judith,

Blairsburg; and Richard Knudson and his wife, Penny, Alexandra,

Minn.; grandmother of nine; great-grandmother of four; sister

of Edna Denekas and her husband, Lester, Kamrar.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on June 17,

1996; and one sister, Lorraine Inglas.

Orville William Arends

ALEXANDER  



Orville William Arends, 81, of Alexander. died Thursday (April

9, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First

Reformed Church, with the Rev. Gerald Norman officiating. Interment

will be at the Alexander Cemetery, with military rites by the

Latimer and Belmond Honor Guard.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Tenold Funeral

Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the church.



Orville William Arends, the son of J.C. and Anna (Bode) Arends

was born July 9, 1915, 2 miles west of Alexander.



He was baptized in Kanawha by his grandfather, the Rev. C.J.

Bode and was educated in the Alexander schools.



Orville farmed with his father until he entered the Army on

April 17, 1941. He went into the foreign service on Feb. 1, 1942,

and served until Aug. 1, 1945. He served with the African campaign

and the European Theater. He served in the 205 M.P. Company as

a military policeman. He guarded President Roosevelt, President

Eisenhower, Prime Minister Churchill and Charles Bedeaux. He

was discharged from the service on Aug. 11, 1945, having served

four years and four days with 3 years being overseas.



He was united in marriage to Pauline Meinders on March 15, 1947,

at the Alexander Parsonage by Pastor Roskamp.



They lived one mile north and a half-mile west of Alexander,

and to this union, Roy and Marilyn were born. They moved west

of Alexander in 1957 and to their present home in 1980.



Orville was a trustee of the Alexander Cemetery, Township committeeman

for ASCS, Alexander Town Council, mayor for four years, Latimer

Legion chaplain and commander at the Belmond VFW.



He enjoyed his children, grandchildren, businessmen, playing

cards, and loved to tell stories, especially war stories.



He liked to visit people and was always willing to lend a helping

hand, and enjoyed touring with the Kitchen Klatter Band, especially

the closing tune of God Bless America, acted out by Pauline,

a tribute to America the country that Orville loved.



Farming was not only Orville's profession but his life. He lived

his job daily and truly loved the land. The last few years, Orville

took over Pauline's job of bring lunch to the field. The big

white van was always a welcome sight.



Orville and Pauline celebrated 50 years together on March 15

and they received many cards from their wide circle of friends,

and enjoyed surprise meals and card parties. This celebration

continued to Sunday, April 6, with a family meal at their home.



Surviving are his wife, Pauline; daughter, Marilyn, of Des Moines;

son, Roy Arends and his wife, Jeanie, of Alexander; granddaughter,

Kelly Pratt and her husband, Joe, of Ames; grandson, Drew of

Ames; grandson, Johnathan of Kansas City, Mo.; brothers, Henry

of Belmond, and Richard of Kanawha; sister, Lena VanDusseldorf

of Alexander; and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.



He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Edna Tucker

and Hazel Benson, and an infant brother.

Ave.

A.L. ``Pat'' Rasmussen, 91, of Algona, formerly of Burt, died

Thursday (April 10, 1997) at the Good Samaritan Home, Algona.



Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Burt

Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Roland Emond officiating.

Burial will be in Burt Township Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from noon until time of services on

Saturday at the church.

A.L. Rasmussen was born May 31, 1905, in Ford City, Ill.



Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Algona; two daughters,

Carol Tisnado of Petuluma, Calif., and Marilyn Graham of Livermore,

Calif.; two sons, Richard of Burt and David of Austin, Minn.;

17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Della

Middlesworth of Des Moines and Lois Charbonneax of Britt.

Eva Elizabeth Nasheim, 85, of Mason City, died Thursday (April

10, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.

Eva Elizabeth Nasheim was born Jan. 17, 1912, in Highland, Wis.,

daughter of William and Julia (Eling) Kopps.



She married Robert Nasheim Sr. on June 30, 1930, in Mason City.



Eva loved spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren

and her family.



She enjoyed raising flowers. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran

Church.



She will be sadly missed by one son, Robert William Nasheim

Jr. and his wife, Shirley, Mason City; one daughter, Donna Smrha

and her husband, Ron, Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Shantelle

Smrha, student at University of Iowa; Robert William Nasheim

III and his wife, Margie, Glendive, Mont., and Ronald W. Nasheim

and Deb, Mason City; six great-grandchildren, Robert William

Nasheim IV, Bozeman, Mont.; Michael A. Nasheim, Wahpeton, N.D.;

Timothy J. Nasheim, Glendive, Mont.; Wade A. Nasheim, Des Moines;

Nicholas R. Nasheim, Mason City, and Kevin Klotzbier, Mason City;

one sister, Betty Angell, Mason City; and one brother, Shirley

R. Kopps, Mason City.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert

William Nasheim Sr., on March 21, 1996; and nine brothers and

sisters.



The family is at peace knowing she has joined her beloved husband,

Robert.

David R. Sappenfield, 73, of 1 South Taylor Ave., died Wednesday

(April 9, 1997) at the Muse Norris Inpatient Unit.



Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity

Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John

``Jack'' Gannett officiating, followed by a flag presentation

conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Inurnment

will be in the Elmwood Columbarium.



The body will be cremated. The Sappenfield family will receive

friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home,

111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. conducted

by  Benevolence Lodge #145 A.F.& A.M.



Memorials may be given to the David R. Sappenfield Memorial

Fund.



David was born Dec. 28, 1923, in Lawrenceburg, Ind., the son

of the Rev. John V. and Sarah (Reddick) Sappenfield.



David graduated from Lawrenceburg High School, Lincoln Technical

Institute in Lincoln, Neb., Spartan School of Aeronautics in

Tulsa, Okla., and the Brown Institute of Radio and Television

in Minneapolis, Minn.



David served in the United States Coast Guard during World War

II and later transferred to the United States Navy Air Corps.



He married Maedeane L. Mennenga on May 14, 1948, in Belmond.



David had been a flight instructor in Clarion, Webster City

and Garner.



He had worked as a lab technician for General Mills in Belmond

and was chief engineer at KGLO Radio and Television for many

years. In 1989, he retired from KIMT Television.



David was instrumental in building KCMR Radio, was involved

with the Experimental Aircraft Association and was an amateur

radio operator for many years.



He was a member of Benevolence Lodge #145 A.F. & A.M. and Trinity

Lutheran Church.



David enjoyed working with his hands which included building

and rebuilding cars.



 He was never too busy to help friends and family with his many

skills.



Survivors include his wife, Maedeane L. Sappenfield of Mason

City; son, David C. Sappenfield and wife, Kimberlee, of Mason

City; daughters, Valoris J. Bishop of Durham, N.C., and Linda

J. Paske and her husband, Lance, of Mason City; grandchildren,

Aaron L. and Leah J. Paske of Mason City; Karith L. and Jarrad

L. Bishop of Durham, N.C., and David J. and Lorra Mae Sappenfield

of Mason City; one great-grandson, Dylan of Durham, N.C.; two

sisters, Dorcas Sappenfield of Milan, Ind., and Lois Heitman

of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; and one brother, Luther Sappenfield and

his wife, Ruth, of Dallas, Texas.

Alva was born in Queens, Long Island, N.Y., on March 18, 1905,

the daughter of Milton and Jennie Ten Eyck Smith.



She was married to Harold H. Jennings on May 29, 1929, in Valley

Junction, Iowa.



Her husband, Dr. Harold H. Jennings was a family physician for

43 years in Mason City, Iowa.



They moved to Albuquerque, N.M., and later to Mesa, Ariz. They

moved to Minneiska in 1990.



Harold died April 24, 1993.



Survivors include her son, James ``Jerry'' Jennings and his

wife, Marcia, of Minnesota City; grandson, Kevin Jennings and

his wife, Janelle, Burlington, Iowa; and great-grandchildren,

Angie and Brandon.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and five sisters.

Roger Austin was born May 12, 1932, at Grand Meadow, Minn.,

the son of Edward and Bessie (Austin) Austin. He grew up in Austin,

Minn.



Roger served in the 11th Airbourne Division of the United States

Army for two years and enjoyed boxing and bowling in his spare

time.



He was employed as a dock man for Ezor's Trucking Company in

the Detroit area.



He enjoyed playing pool, shuffleboard and bowling.



He liked spending time with all of his nieces and nephews.



Roger was a member of the Teamster's Union, Detroit l.



Survivors include one brother, John Austin, Mason City; eight

nieces and nephews, Cynthia Velt and her husband, Alan, Los Angeles,

Calif.; Janet Griswold and her husband, Steve, Los Angeles, Calif.;

Marilyn Dent and her husband, Jack, Laguna Hills, Calif.; Catherine

DeRoos and her husband, Bill, Rockwell; David Austin and his

wife, Susan, Mason City; Roger Austin, Glastonbury, Conn.; Karen

Rosenberger and her husband, Brad, Mason City; and Shelly Van

Kathryn M. DeWilde was born Feb. 24, 1910, in Garner, Iowa,

the daughter of Gottlieb and Sarah (Brockey) Riehm.



She was educated at the Hayfield Consolidated School and Hamilton

Business College.



She married Nicholas A. DeWilde on Jan. 13, 1931, in Des Moines,

Iowa, where she was working as a clerk in the Legislature.



They made their home in the Mason City and Clear Lake area.



She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church

and the Mary Martha Circle. She also was a member of the Rake

and Hoe Garden Club.



Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Pringle and her husband,

Jerry, of Mason City; one son, Tom DeWilde and his wife, Sandra,

Clear Lake; two grandchildren, Tamara Kroc and her husband, Dan,

Grayslake, Ill., and Jason DeWilde, West Des Moines; three nieces,

Lois Robbins, Dubuque, Marlene Metge, Modesto, Calif., and Marilyn

Harper, Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Cleone Riehm, Dubuque;

Orville William Arends

ALEXANDER  



Orville William Arends, 81, of Alexander, died Thursday (April

9, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the First

Reformed Church, with the Rev. Gerald Norman officiating. Interment

will be at the Alexander Cemetery, with military rites by the

Latimer and Belmond Honor Guard.



Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Tenold Funeral

Home, Belmond, and will be held one hour prior to services today

at the church.



Orville William Arends, the son of J.C. and Anna (Bode) Arends

was born July 9, 1915, 2 miles west of Alexander.



He was baptized in Kanawha by his grandfather, the Rev. C.J.

Bode, and was educated in the Alexander schools.



Orville farmed with his father until he entered the Army on

April 17, 1941. He went into the foreign service on the first

convoy on Feb. 1, 1942, and served until Aug. 1, 1945. He served

with the African campaign and the European Theater. He served

in the 205 M.P. Company as a military policeman. He guarded President

Roosevelt, President Eisenhower, Prime Minister Churchill and

Charles Bedeaux. He was discharged from the service on Aug. 11,

1945, having served four years and four days, with 3 years overseas.



He was united in marriage to Pauline Meinders on March 15, 1947,

at the Alexander Parsonage by Pastor Roskamp.



They lived one mile north and a half-mile west of Alexander,

and to this union, Roy and Marilyn were born. They moved west

of Alexander in 1957 and to their present home in 1980.



Orville was a trustee of the Alexander Cemetery, Township committeeman

for ASCS, a member of the Alexander Town Council, mayor for four

years, Latimer Legion chaplain and commander at the Belmond VFW.



He enjoyed his children, grandchildren, businessmen, playing

cards, and loved to tell stories, especially war stories.



He liked to visit people and was always willing to lend a helping

hand, and enjoyed touring with the Kitchen Klatter Band, especially

the closing tune of ``God Bless America,'' acted out by Pauline,

a tribute to America the country that Orville loved.



Farming was not only Orville's profession but his life. He lived

his job daily and truly loved the land. The last few years, Orville

took over Pauline's job of bringing lunch to the field. The big

white van was always a welcome sight.



Orville and Pauline celebrated 50 years together on March 15

and they received many cards from their wide circle of friends,

and enjoyed surprise meals and card parties. This celebration

continued to Sunday, April 6, with a family meal at their home.



Surviving are his wife, Pauline; daughter, Marilyn, of Des Moines;

son, Roy Arends and his wife, Jeanie, of Alexander; granddaughter,

Kelly Pratt and her husband, Joe, of Ames; grandson, Andrew of

Ames; grandson, Johnathan of Kansas City, Mo.; brothers, Henry

of Belmond, and Richard of Kanawha; sister, Lena VanDusseldorf

of Alexander; and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.



He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Edna Tucker

and Hazel Benson, and an infant brother.

Robert F. Lucas, 72, of 1026 Eighth St. N.W., died Thursday

morning (April 10, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient

Unit.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Fullerton

Patterson James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City,

with the Rev. Randy Nielsen, chaplain of Good Shepherd Nursing

Home and Chaplain Kathy Graves of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating.



Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel

and interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery with military

rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Robert was born on Jan. 7, 1925, in Manly, Iowa, the son of

Charles and Lottie (Julyan) Lucas.



He graduated from the Kensett High School in 1944 and then received

his degree in Social Science from Waldorf College.



Robert honorably served his country during World War II and

the Korean Conflict, in the 11th Airborne Div. Paratrooper Co.

E, 187th Parachute Infantry.



During his time in the Army, he was stationed at Luzon in the

Southern Philippines.



Prior to his entering the service, he was employed on the Rock

Island Railroad, and following the service, he worked as a maintenance

man for the Standard Oil Company in Mason City for 31 years before

retiring in 1981.



Robert was united in marriage to Margaret Poohl on April 4,

1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.



Robert's favorite past time was fishing. He especially enjoyed

Ear Falls, Canada.



He also served as a president of the Lunker Club.



He was a lifemember of the San-Juan Marne Post #733 of the V.F.W.

and was a member of the Clausen Warden American Legion, and a

41-year member of the Moose Lodge.



He enjoyed his vegetable garden and attending his grandchildren's

sporting activities.



Robert will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Margaret of

Mason City; his two sons, Robert L. and his wife, Sue Lucas,

and Gary and his wife, Julie Lucas, all of Mason City. He also

has four grandchildren, Jamie and Robert, and Laurie and Nathan

Lucas, all of Mason City; one great-granddaughter, Katie Lucas;

as well as his three sisters, Ruth Herbert of Minnetonka, Minn.;

Mrs. Don (Luetta) Rasmussen, Mason City; and Mrs. Calvin (Florence)

Smith of Mason City; and two brothers and their wives, Leonard

and Marge Lucas, Buffalo City, Wis., and Stanley and Beverly

Lucas of Kensett.



Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his twin sisters,

Joyce Anderson and Phyllis Larson; and three brothers, Howard,

Charles, and an infant brother, Richard.

the daughter of Jess and Lillian Childers.  She married Frank

Curtis on Aug. 17, 1972.



Dorothy moved from Mason City to Bluff City, Kan. in 1972. 

She was a member of First United Methodist Church.



Survivors include, her husband, Frank Curtis of Bluff City,

Kan.; two sons, Dan Barron of LaHabra, Calif. and Jack Billick

of Mason City; four daughters, Susan Otterman of Prestcott, Ariz.,

Judy Nelson of Aberdeen, SD., Josephine Brown of Des Moines and

Chris Halloran of Mason City; one step-daughter, Jackie Riggs

of Spokane, Wash.; one brother, Roger Childers of Algona; one

sister, Ruby Zea of Mason City; 17 grandchildren; and several

great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Stephen

Barron.

Daryl D. Hansen, 57, died Friday (April 11, 1997) at the Humboldt

County Memorial Hospital of leukemia.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Our Saviour's

Lutheran Church.



Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Mason-Lindhart

Funeral Home.



Daryl Hansen was born May 6, 1939, in Mason City to Russel and

Irma (Schoenwetter) Hansen.  He grew up on a farm near Kanawha

and graduated from Kanawha High School in 1957.  He graduated

from Iowa State University in 1962 with a degree in agriculture.

On June 20, 1964, he was united in marriage to Vivien L. Aasland

of Joice, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice.  After living

briefly in Charleston, S.C., they moved to Humboldt in 1966,

where he began his career with the Farmers Home Administration,

now Rural Development, a division of the United States Department

of Agriculture.  He spent 29 years wit the FmHA, working in both

the county and district offices.  His most recent position was

as Assistant District Director of the Humboldt District which

covered a 15-county area in north central Iowa.  He retired in

December 1995.  Mr. Hansen was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran

Church and a former Kiwanian.



Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Vivien; two daughters,

Jill Hansen of Apple Valley, Minn. and Leah Hill and her husband

Peter of Des Moines; his mother, Irma Hansen of Kanawha; a brother,

Roger Hansen of Kanawha; two sisters, Gloria Burk of Garner and

Rita Greiman of Bloomfield, New Mexico. 



He was preceded in death by his father, Russel L. Hansen.



He will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends, his

co-workers and the many towns and organizations across north

central  Iowa that he helped through his devoted attention to

his work.

11, 1997) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center-East.

Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Hazel Denney, 75, of Garner died Friday (April 11, 1997) at

North Iowa Mercy Health Center, East in Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday at the United

Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Willis Nicholson officiating.

Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday at the Cataldo

Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St.



Hazel Adeline Denney, the daughter of Edward and Jennie Ann

(Wentworth) Stuart was born Oct. 30, 1921 at Buffalo Center.

She graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1939 and then

attended La' James Beauty School in Mason City.  She worked at

beauty shops in Northwood and Garner.  On July 22, 1942 she married

Boyd Denney at the Ellis Point Methodist Church at Buffalo Center.

They made their home in Lebanon, Ind. where she worked at a

defense plant for several years.  In 1945, they moved to Rake

where they farmed. In 1958, they moved to Garner where they owned

and operated the Westside Grocery Store.  In 1988, they remodeled

to store and changed it to Denney's Townhouse Deli.  Hazel and

Boyd continued to work at the Deli together until retirement.

She enjoyed her family and working.



She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.



She is survived by her husband, Boyd of Garner; a son, Roger

Denney and his wife, Sheryl, of Garner; a grandson, Brain Denney

of Garner; two sisters, Edith Ourebo of Wells, Minn. and Zella

Bye Prafke of Kiester, Minn.



She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Cecil Stuart

and a sister, Irene Evenson.

Kathryn M. DeWilde

MASON CITY 



Kathryn M. (Mrs. Nicholas) DeWilde, 87, of 815 S. Illinois

Ave., died Thursday (April 10, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice

Inpatient Unit.



Private family services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the

Wayside Chapel, First United Methodist Church, with the Rev.

Sharon Betsworth officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial

Park Cemetery, Mason City.



Visitation will be held today from 1-5 p.m. at Major Erickson

Funeral home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.



Memorials may be given to the Sunday School department at the

First United Methodist Church in her memory.



Kathryn M. DeWilde was born Feb. 24, 1910, in Garner, Iowa,

the daughter of Gottlieb and Sarah (Brockey) Riehm.



She was educated at the Hayfield Consolidated School and Hamilton

Business College.



She married Nicholas A. DeWilde on Jan. 13, 1931, in Des Moines,

Iowa, where she was working as a clerk in the Legislature.



They made their home in the Mason City and Clear Lake area.



She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church

and the Mary Martha Circle. She also was a member of the Rake

and Hoe Garden Club.



Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Pringle and her husband,

Jerry, of Mason City; one son, Tom DeWilde and his wife, Sandra,

Clear Lake; two grandchildren, Tamara Kroc and her husband, Dan,

Grayslake, Ill., and Jason DeWilde, West Des Moines; three nieces,

Lois Robbins, Dubuque, Marlene Metge, Modesto, Calif., and Marilyn

Harper, Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Cleone Riehm, Dubuque;

and special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Allen of Charles City,

Mr. and Mrs. Scott Allen of Des Moines, and Kathleen and Michael

Oxley of Mason City.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother

and three sisters.

Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

George W. Ennen, 86, of 502 Brewer St., Lakota, died Friday

George William Ennen was born May 23, 1910 in Germania (now

Lakota).



Survivors include his wife, Annie of Lakota; three daughters,

Darlene Brandt Clark of Rochester, Minn., Margaret Westphal of

North Mankato, Minn. and Patricia Weringa of Waconia, Minn.;

ten grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren;

and one sister, Minnie Lester of Rochester, Minn.

Norma's family suggest that memorials be made to the First Lutheran

Church in Northwood, the American Heart Association or the American

Cancer Society in memory of Norma C. Rustad.



Norma C. Rustad was born June 29, 1904 at Northwood, the daughter

of Alfred John and Maria (Holm) Anderson.  She was baptized and

later confirmed into the Lutheran faith at the Deer Creek Lutheran

church.



She was united in marriage to Joyce E. Rustad on Nov. 6, 1925

at Northwood.  The couple then moved to Mason City and started

their first antique shop together.



Norma and Joyce later moved to Alexandria, Minn. and spent many

happy years there.



Norma and her husband were very actively involved with their

church in Alexandria and throughout the ELCA synod.  Norma was

also involved with the Garden Club and the Button Club.



The couple relocated to Northwood in 1972, joining the membership

of the First Lutheran Church at this time.



Norma loved antiques and crafts.



Those left to cherish her memory are four nieces, Beverly Rustad

of Waterloo, Ilah Weiblen and her husband William of Dubuque,

Rachel Alken of St. Claire's Shores, Minn. and Katheryn Liner

and her husband Joseph of San Bernadino, Calif.; three nephews,

James Anderson and his wife Jenevieve of Minneapolis, Minn.,

Larry Anderson and his wife Evelyn of Duluth, Minn. and Ronald

Rustad of Fairbanks, Ark.; several great-nieces and nephews and

several great-great nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband

Joyce, and one brother Alvin Anderson.

Myrlen was born April 14, 1927 in Britt.



Survivors include his wife, Betty Nelson of Britt; two daughter,

Cindy Anderson of Britt and Wendy Bomstad of Garner; three sons,

Richy Nelson of Britt, Kevin Nelson of Greenfield and Jon Nelson

of Klemme; two brothers, Raymond Nelson and Donald Nelson both

of Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by parents, two sisters, one brother.
