Kenneth `Bud' Richard Taylor

NORTHWOOD  



Kenneth ``Bud'' Richard Taylor, 78, of Northwood, died Tuesday

(May 14, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason

City.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Northwood

United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Nicholson officiating.

Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, with military honors

by the VFW Post No. 6779 Our Buddies Memorial of Northwood.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder

& Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S.



Bud was born on April 22, 1918, in Mason City, to Charles H.

and Marie (Olson) Taylor.



He attended school in Kensett and graduated from Leland High

School in 1937.



After graduation, he was employed by Fred Carlson Company from

1938 to 1941.



On Sept. 26, 1941, he married Anna Mae Albertson in Clarksville,

Tenn.



He entered the United States Army in May of 1942 and was a member

of the 788th Amphibian Tractor Battalion serving in the Philippines

and Okinawa.



After being discharged from the Army, he and Anna Mae settled

in Forest City, and Bud was employed by John K. Hanson of Forest

City.



They moved to Kensett in 1951, and he worked as a carpenter

for A.J. Wignes for a number of years and then was employed by

B & K Lumber until his retirement in 1981.



Bud enjoyed gardening, restoring and collecting antiques. He

was involved in the Boy Scouts for many years.



He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae, of Northwood; two sons,

Craig and his wife, Gina Taylor, of Duluth, Minn., and Mark and

his wife, Teresa Taylor, of Northwood; one daughter, Diane and

her husband, Bill Byerly,  of Mason City; eight grandchildren,

Jeanine, Paula, Christine and Heath Taylor of Duluth, Minn.;

Bill and wife, Katie Byerly and LeAnn Byerly, of Mason City;

Danielle and Rachel Taylor of Northwood; three great-grandchildren,

Olivia, Ian and Alec; two sisters, Lola Hall of Mason City, and

Ardyce Gardner of Manly; several nieces and nephews; and a host

of friends.



Bud was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three

sisters.

Ralph Raymond McBurney

GREENE   



Ralph Raymond McBurney, 94, of 108 S. High St., formerly of

Humboldt, died Wednesday (May 15, 1996) at the Liebe Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Reid's

Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Gene Burry of the United Methodist

Church officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Humboldt.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at Reid's Funeral

Chapel, with a 7:30 p.m. public Scripture service followed by

a public Masonic service conducted by Vulcan Lodge 498 A.F. and

A.M. of Bristow. There will be further visitation from 9 a.m.

until time of services on Saturday.



Ralph Raymond McBurney was born Dec. 11, 1901, in Belvedere,

Ill.



Survivors include two sons, Donald of Greene and Glenn of Council

Bluffs; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and seven

great-great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother.

BRITT  



Eva M. Kumsher, 82, of Britt, died Wednesday (May 15, 1996)

at her home.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St.

Patrick's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating.

Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.



Friends may call after 3 p.m. Friday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel,

and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.  There

will be a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 3 p.m.

and a 7:30 p.m. Christian wake Friday at the funeral home.



Eva M. Kumsher was born May 24, 1914, in Pontiac, Ill.



Survivors include three daughters, Jeanette Whitehurst of Garner;

Betty Reibsamen of Hampton, and Verna Kendall of Oskaloosa; three

sons, Raymond Kumsher of Kanawha; Edwin Kumsher of Rohrersville,

Md., and Robert Kumsher of Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Doris Claude

of Garner, and Emma Lou Stayner of Hampton; and two brothers,

John Gatchel and Jim Gatchel, both of Garner.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother,

one grandson and one great-granddaughter.

DUMONT  



Ruth Myrtle Burn, 86, of Dumont, died Wednesday (May 14, 1996)

at the Woodbury West Health Center, Des Moines.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Sietsema

Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont, with the Rev. John Burn officiating.

Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral

home, with family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.



Ruth Myrtle Burn was born March 26, 1910, in Grundy Center.



Survivors include one son, Doyle Burn of West Des Moines; one

brother, Merlin Schwab of Hayward, Calif.; three grandchildren;

and two great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers

and two other brothers in infancy.

Donna Mae Mertz, 59, of 2009 First Ave. S., died Monday (May

13, 1996) at home.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke

Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Kermit Roisen

of Zion Lutheran Church officiating.



Visitation will be held from noon until time of services on

Sunday at the funeral home.



The family suggests memorials to the Donna Mae Mertz Memorial

Fund.



Donna Mae Mertz was born Dec. 12, 1936, in Wood Lake, Minn.



Survivors include her husband, Robert Mertz of Cushing, Wis.;

her father, Wilbert Volkman of Belleview, Minn.; four children,

Judy Wright of Garden Grove, Calif.; Linda Beach of Hudson, Wis.;

Dana Raboin of New Richmond, Wis., and Randy Mertz of Clear Lake;

11 grandchildren; three brothers, Alvin Volkman of Medford, Minn.;

Gordon Volkman of Jordan, Minn., and Dennis Volkman of Faribault,

Minn.; two sisters, Irene Gades of Benson, Minn., and Janet Lydell

of Austin, Texas.



She was preceded in death by her mother and a grandson.

Jim A. Cockram, 91, of Sheffield, died Tuesday (May 14, 1996)

at the Sheffield Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Grarup

Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Beard of the First United Methodist

Church, Sheffield, officiating.  Burial will be in the Hillside

Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral

home.



Jim A. Cockram was born Oct. 15, 1904, in Woden.



Survivors include one daughter, Donna Dokken of Kensett; one

son, Robert Cockram of Sheffield; three grandchildren; and five

great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one sister.

Jerome A. Matton

MASON CITY  



Jerome A. Matton, 52, of 708 N. Pennsylvania Ave., died Tuesday

(May 14, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East of natural

causes.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Temple

Baptist Church, 1211 S. Kentucky Ave., with the Rev. Jim Pratt

officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St.Joseph Cemetery.



Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at the Fullerton Patterson

James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E., and one hour prior

to services at the church.



Jerome was born on Dec. 1, 1943, in Rice Lake, Wis., the son

of Henry J. and Annie M. (Nichols) Matton.



He attended school in Rice Lake, and moved to Mason City about

1965.



He was employed as Lead Man-Supervisor at the Clear Lake Bakery

for 25 years.



Jerome and Deborah Pint were united in holy matrimony on June

3, 1980, in Rapid City, S.D.



Jerome was very dedicated to scouting and served 17 years as

an assistant scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 14. He was also

a member of the Temple Baptist Church, enjoyed making crafts

from wood and working on cars.



He spent many enjoyable hours hunting deer, fishing in the Mason

City area and camping both in the summer and winter.



Jerome will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Deb, of Mason

City; his three sons, Andrew and his wife, Kris Matton of Kensett,

and Randy and Jerome, both of Mason City; his two grandsons,

Jesse and Trey and his two granddaughters, Michelle and Mara;

two sisters, Barbara and her husband, Larry Knutson of California,

and Margie and her husband, Loren Lathrop, of Wisconsin; four

brothers, Harold and his wife, Shelby Matton of Rice Lake, Wis.;

Raymond of St. Paul, Minn.; Leonard of Rice Lake, Wis., and Irvin

and his wife, Jose Matton, of Washington, D.C.



Jerome was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lucille

Woods; and three brothers, Arnold, Henery and Edward.

W. Lamont Constable, 90, of 324 Second St. N.E., died Wednesday

(May 15, 1996)  at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.



Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Wesley

United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the

Rev. David Shogren officiating.



There will be a Masonic services at 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., conducted by the Harding

Lodge #649  A.F. and A.M.



There is no visitation. The body was donated to the University

of Iowa, Iowa City.



Memorials may be given to the W. Lamont Constable Memorial Fund.



Lamont Constable was born May 27, 1905, in Irwin, the son of

Nelson J. and Gertrude (Guss) Constable.



Lamont graduated from Irwin High School in 1922 and Iowa State

Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1931.



He married Margaret E. Nutt on Sept. 9, 1933, at  Beatrice,

Neb. Mrs. Constable died in 1980.



Lamont earned his Masters Degree in 1941 from the University

of Iowa.



He taught math and physics in the Mason City School System and

North Iowa Area Community College for 31 years, retiring in 1970.



Lamont was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Harding

Lodge #649 A.F. & A.M. and High Twelve.



Survivors include one son, David N. Constable and his wife,

Jill, of Edina, Minn.; two granddaughters, Beth Griffith of Winona,

Minn., and Mary Constable of Chicago, Ill.; two great-grandchildren,

Aron Griffith and Leah Griffith; and one brother, William Constable

of Shelby.



He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, and one son,

Lamont.

City,996) at the Americana Health Care Center.

Public memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at

the First Covenant Church, Highway 18 East at Ohio, with the

Rev. Richard Murray officiating.

Amy Stevens was born April 17, 1900, in Mitchell County, the

daughter of John and Belle  (Schultz) Hodson.



Amy graduated from Plymouth High School in 1919.



She married Lloyd L. Stevens on Sept. 27, 1920, in Mason City.



The Stevens lived most of their life in Plymouth, moving to

Mason City in 1975.



Amy was a member of the First Convenant Church, a member of

Farmers Wife's and Daughters in Plymouth, and along with her

husband, was active in Christian missionary work having gone

to Tahiti twice.



Survivors include sons, Leroy J. Stevens and his wife, Ruth

E. of Soda Springs, Idaho, and Dr. Wendell C. Stevens and his

wife, Lola C. of Lake Oswego, Ore.; one daughter, Ardith Kephart

and husband, Duane, of Dallas, Texas; daughter-in-law, Colleen

Stevens of Denver, Colo.; three sisters, Hazel Galbreath of Des

Moines, Una Johnson of Kansas City, Mo., and Bethel Gould of

Mason City; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and

many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; son, Adrian

J. Stevens; and grandson, Jay L.

Bernice M. Halley, 100, of the Rockwell Care Center, formerly

of 1008 First St. N.E., Mason City, died Tuesday (May 14, 1996)

at the Rockwell Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Mark Culham

of the Hanford Community Church officiating. Burial will be in

Memorial Park Cemetery.



Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and today until

time of services at the funeral home.



Bernice Halley was born May 10, 1896, in Cerro Gordo County,

the daughter of Lawrence and Dora (Flick) Carroll.



Bernice attended schools in Burchinal.



She married Donald V. Halley on June 15, 1921, in Mason City.



The Halleys lived in the Mason City area their entire life.



Bernice moved to the Rockwell Care Center in 1991.



She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and enjoyed

playing bridge and spending time at the Senior Citizens Center.



Survivors include two daughters-in-law, Charlotte Halley of

Mason City, and Ruth Halley of Albia; seven grandchildren, Karen

Staaf of Prior Lake, Minn.; Gary Halley of Minneapolis, Minn.;

Amber Graham of Humeston; Donna Scott of Rockford; Jane Jass

of Albia; Chad Whittaker of Des Moines, and Ryan Whittaker of

Des Moines; 11 great-grandchidren; three great-great-grandchildren;

a niece, Marvyl Carroll Lambert of Castle Rock, Colo.; and her

brother, Robert Whittaker of Des Moines.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; one brother;

and two sons, Willard and Melvin ``Red'' Halley.

Bertha C. Naumann, 91, of Nora Springs, died Monday (May 13,

1996) at the Nora Springs Care Center.



Her body was cremated. There will be no visitation.

Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, with the Rev. Ernst Thompson

of St. Luke Lutheran Church officiating. Inurnment will be in

Rock Grove Cemetery.

in memory of Bertha C. Naumann.



Bertha was born July 4, 1904, in Millard, Neb., daughter of

Gustav and Augusta Naumann.



She lived in the Millard and Omaha, Neb., area until 1972, when

she moved in with her niece, Erna C. Younger and her husband,

Harold L. Younger of Nora Springs, until entering the Nora Springs

Care Center in May of 1992.



Survivors include one sister-in-law, Inez Naumann, of Ralston,

Neb.; two nieces, Erna C. Younger and her husband, Harold, of

Mason City, and Julie Stanbaugh and her husband, Dan, of Omaha,

Neb.; one nephew, David Naumann and his wife, Dawn, of Omaha,

Neb., and their children, Daniel, Paul and Anna Naumann, all

of Omaha, Neb.; one great-nephew, Fred Younger and his wife,

Judy, of Nora Springs; and a very special great-great-nephew,

Cole Younger, of Nora Springs; a great-niece, Susan Younger,

of Dallas, Texas; and many friends.



She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Oswald,

Chris, Otto, Bill; two sisters, Clara and Anna; and one niece,

Ralph Raymond McBurney

GREENE  



Funeral services for Ralph Raymond McBurney, 94, of 108 South

High St., Greene, formerly of Humboldt, will be held at 1:30

p.m. Saturday at Reid's Funeral Chapel with Pastor Gene Burry

of the United Methodist Church officiating.  Burial will be in

the Union Cemetery in Humboldt.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral

Chapel in Greene where there will be a public Scripture service

at 7:30 p.m. followed by a public Masonic service conducted by

Vulcan Lodge 498 A.F. & A.M. of Bristow.  Visitation will continue

on Saturday from 9 a.m. to service time.



Ralph Raymond McBurney was born Dec. 11, 1901, in Belvedere,

Ill., a son of Thomas and Inez (Wells) McBurney, and died Wednesday

(May 15, 1996) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.



He received his education in the Rockford, Ill., public schools,

and as a young man worked as a carpenter in the Rockford area,

and during the depression worked on the WPA projects.  On April

11, 1934, he was united in marriage to Iva Irene Rhoades in Rockford,

Ill.  They made their home in Rockford until 1938 when they moved

to Iowa, where they started farming six miles west of Humboldt.

From 1946 until 1952, Mr. McBurney worked for the Farm Bureau

in Humboldt.  In 1967 they retired and moved to Brownsville,

Texas, where they lived until 1987 at which time they moved to

Greene and became residents of the Liebe Care Center.  While

living in Brownsville he and Iva enjoyed square dancing.  Iva

died on April 30, 1993.



Ralph was a faithful member of the Faith United Methodist Church

in Humboldt, and a 50-year member of the Rotary in Humboldt where

he had  perfect attendance and was named a Paul Harris Fellow.

 He was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star Lodge No. 195 A.F.

& A.M. of Humboldt.  He was named a member of the Republican

Presidential Task Force by President Ronald Reagan.



Living family members include two sons, Donald and his wife,

Lois of Greene; Glenn and his wife, Connie of Council Bluffs;

nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-

grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Iva; and

one brother, Harold.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials

to the Greene Volunteer Ambulance or to the family.

Marian L. Pals was born Oct. 5, 1924, in Belmond.



Survivors include one son, Ray Michael of Van Meter; three sisters,

Betty Barkema of Belmond, Marcella Cunningham and Delores Robbins,

both of Goodell; one brother, LeRoy Green of Belmond; and two

grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers

and one sister.

Naomi Kerlin LaRue

THE DALLES. Ore.  



Naomi Kerlin LaRue, 71, a resident of The Dalles, Ore., died

at a hospital in Omaha, Neb., on April 25, 1996.



She was born July 30, 1924, in Elkader, Iowa, to Walter Ray

and Pearl Kerlin.  She graduated from Mason City High School

in 1942.  She married Larry LaRue in Mason City, Iowa, on Sept.

29, 1946.



They moved with their family to The Dalles in 1968.



She is survived by her daughter, Ann Haverkost and her husband,

Willy of Bellevue, Neb.; four sons, Maurice and his wife, Denise

of Sturgis, S.D.; Michael and his wife, Pam of St. Charles, Ill.;

Marty and his wife, Cheryl of Bay Village, Ohio, and Monty of

Newport, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her mother,

Pearl Kerlin, and a sister, Betty Slock, both of Mason City,

Iowa.  She was preceded in death by her father and husband.



Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Monday, April 29, at Gateway

Presbyterian Church in The Dalles.

Mildred Dostart, 77, of 606 Seventh Ave., Charles City, died

Thursday (May 16, 1996) at the Salsbury Baptist Home.



Funeral services will be held at  10:30 a.m. today at the Trinity

United Methodist  Church, with the Rev. John Bissett officiating.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.



Visitation was held from noon until 9 p.m. on Friday at the

Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., and will be held one hour

prior to services at the church today.



Mildred Lorraine Popham Dostart was born Sept. 16, 1918 at Rockford.



Survivors include her husband, Don, of Charles City; one son,

Thomas Dostart of Mt. Vernon, Wash.; five sisters, Geraldine

and Bonnie Popham, and Janette Vietmeier, all of Lodi, Calif.,

Gladys Green of Garden Grove, Calif., and Genevieve Willert of

Rockford; and three grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents.



Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Disease Association

or the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Shirley Mae Schroeder, 69, of Dows, died Friday (May 17, 1996)

at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Vernon

Lutheran Church, rural Dows, with the Rev. Glenn Kappelmann officiating.

Burial will be in the Vernon Lutheran Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Elledge

Funeral Home, Dows.



Shirley Mae Schroeder was born March 18, 1927 on her grandparents

farm in Vernon Township.



Survivors include her husband, Wilbur, of Dows; two sons,  Steven

of Estherville, and Douglas of Swisher; one brother, Roger Jacobson

of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents.

will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Merwyn ``Mert'' Dahle was born Dec. 5, 1938 in Britt.



Survivors include his mother, Lillian Dahle of Woden; one daughter,

Kim Jennings of Hanlontown; two sons, Kevin Dahle of Northfield,

Minn., and Tony Dahle of Mason City; one sister, Deloris Shipman

of Belvidere, Ill.; one brother, Ronald Dahle of Woden; and four

grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his father.

(May 15, 1996)  at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.



Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Wesley

United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the

Rev. David Shogren officiating.



There will be a Masonic services at 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., conducted by the Harding

Lodge #649  A.F. and A.M.



There is no visitation. The body was donated to the University

of Iowa, Iowa City.



Memorials may be given to the W. Lamont Constable Memorial Fund.



Lamont Constable was born May 27, 1905, in Irwin, the son of

Nelson J. and Gertrude (Guss) Constable.



Lamont graduated from Irwin High School in 1922 and Iowa State

Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1931.



He married Margaret E. Nutt on Sept. 9, 1933, at  Beatrice,

Neb. Mrs. Constable died in 1980.



Lamont earned his Masters Degree in 1941 from the University

of Iowa.



He taught math and physics in the Mason City School System and

North Iowa Area Community College for 31 years, retiring in 1970.



Lamont was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Harding

Lodge #649 A.F. & A.M. and High Twelve.



Survivors include one son, David N. Constable and his wife,

Jill, of Edina, Minn.; two granddaughters, Beth Griffith of Winona,

Minn., and Mary Constable of Chicago, Ill.; two great-grandchildren,

Aron Griffith and Leah Griffith; and one brother, William Constable

of Shelby.



He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, and one son,

Lamont.

Amy Stevens was born April 17, 1900, in Mitchell County, the

daughter of John and Belle  (Schultz) Hodson.



Amy graduated from Plymouth High School in 1919.



She married Lloyd L. Stevens on Sept. 27, 1920, in Mason City.



The Stevens lived most of their life in Plymouth, moving to

Mason City in 1975.



Amy was a member of the First Convenant Church, a member of

Farmers Wife's and Daughters in Plymouth, and along with her

husband, was active in Christian missionary work having gone

to Tahiti twice.



Survivors include sons, Leroy J. Stevens and his wife, Ruth

E. of Soda Springs, Idaho, and Dr. Wendell C. Stevens and his

wife, Lola C. of Lake Oswego, Ore.; one daughter, Ardith Kephart

and husband, Duane, of Dallas, Texas; daughter-in-law, Colleen

Stevens of Denver, Colo.; three sisters, Hazel Galbreath of Des

Moines, Una Johnson of Kansas City, Mo., and Bethel Gould of

Mason City; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and

many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; son, Adrian

J. Stevens; and grandson, Jay L.

Bernice M. Halley, 100, of the Rockwell Care Center, formerly

of 1008 First St. N.E., Mason City, died Tuesday (May 14, 1996)

at the Rockwell Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Mark Culham

of the Hanford Community Church officiating. Burial will be in

Memorial Park Cemetery.



Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and today until

time of services at the funeral home.



Bernice Halley was born May 10, 1896, in Cerro Gordo County,

the daughter of Lawrence and Dora (Flick) Carroll.



Bernice attended schools in Burchinal.



She married Donald V. Halley on June 15, 1921, in Mason City.



The Halleys lived in the Mason City area their entire life.



Bernice moved to the Rockwell Care Center in 1991.



She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and enjoyed

playing bridge and spending time at the Senior Citizens Center.



Survivors include two daughters-in-law, Charlotte Halley of

Mason City, and Ruth Halley of Albia; seven grandchildren, Karen

Staaf of Prior Lake, Minn.; Gary Halley of Minneapolis, Minn.;

Amber Graham of Humeston; Donna Scott of Rockford; Jane Jass

of Albia; Chad Whittaker of Des Moines, and Ryan Whittaker of

Des Moines; 11 great-grandchidren; three great-great-grandchildren;

a niece, Marvyl Carroll Lambert of Castle Rock, Colo.; and her

brother, Robert Whittaker of Des Moines.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; one brother;

and two sons, Willard and Melvin ``Red'' Halley.

Bertha was born July 4, 1904, in Millard, Neb., daughter of

Gustav and Augusta Naumann.



She lived in the Millard and Omaha, Neb., area until 1972, when

she moved in with her niece, Erna C. Younger and her husband,

Harold L. Younger of Nora Springs, until entering the Nora Springs

Care Center in May of 1992.



Survivors include one sister-in-law, Inez Naumann, of Ralston,

Neb.; two nieces, Erna C. Younger and her husband, Harold, of

Mason City, and Julie Stanbaugh and her husband, Dan, of Omaha,

Neb.; one nephew, David Naumann and his wife, Dawn, of Omaha,

Neb., and their children, Daniel, Paul and Anna Naumann, all

of Omaha, Neb.; one great-nephew, Fred Younger and his wife,

Judy, of Nora Springs; and a very special great-great-nephew,

Cole Younger, of Nora Springs; a great-niece, Susan Younger,

of Dallas, Texas; and many friends.



She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Oswald,

Chris, Otto, Bill; two sisters, Clara and Anna; and one niece,

Ralph Raymond McBurney

GREENE  



Funeral services for Ralph Raymond McBurney, 94, of 108 South

High St., Greene, formerly of Humboldt, will be held at 1:30

p.m. Saturday at Reid's Funeral Chapel with Pastor Gene Burry

of the United Methodist Church officiating.  Burial will be in

the Union Cemetery in Humboldt.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral

Chapel in Greene where there will be a public Scripture service

at 7:30 p.m. followed by a public Masonic service conducted by

Vulcan Lodge 498 A.F. & A.M. of Bristow.  Visitation will continue

on Saturday from 9 a.m. to service time.



Ralph Raymond McBurney was born Dec. 11, 1901, in Belvedere,

Ill., a son of Thomas and Inez (Wells) McBurney, and died Wednesday

(May 15, 1996) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.



He received his education in the Rockford, Ill., public schools,

and as a young man worked as a carpenter in the Rockford area,

and during the depression worked on the WPA projects.  On April

11, 1934, he was united in marriage to Iva Irene Rhoades in Rockford,

Ill.  They made their home in Rockford until 1938 when they moved

to Iowa, where they started farming six miles west of Humboldt.

From 1946 until 1952, Mr. McBurney worked for the Farm Bureau

in Humboldt.  In 1967 they retired and moved to Brownsville,

Texas, where they lived until 1987 at which time they moved to

Greene and became residents of the Liebe Care Center.  While

living in Brownsville he and Iva enjoyed square dancing.  Iva

died on April 30, 1993.



Ralph was a faithful member of the Faith United Methodist Church

in Humboldt, and a 50-year member of the Rotary in Humboldt where

he had  perfect attendance and was named a Paul Harris Fellow.

 He was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star Lodge No. 195 A.F.

& A.M. of Humboldt.  He was named a member of the Republican

Presidential Task Force by President Ronald Reagan.



Living family members include two sons, Donald and his wife,

Lois of Greene; Glenn and his wife, Connie of Council Bluffs;

nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-

grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Iva; and

one brother, Harold.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials

to the Greene Volunteer Ambulance or to the family.

Naomi Kerlin LaRue, 71, a resident of The Dalles, Ore., died

at a hospital in Omaha, Neb., on April 25, 1996.



She was born July 30, 1924, in Elkader, Iowa, to Walter Ray

and Pearl Kerlin.  She graduated from Mason City High School

in 1942.  She married Larry LaRue in Mason City, Iowa, on Sept.

29, 1946.



They moved with their family to The Dalles in 1968.



She is survived by her daughter, Ann Haverkost and her husband,

Willy of Bellevue, Neb.; four sons, Maurice and his wife, Denise

of Sturgis, S.D.; Michael and his wife, Pam of St. Charles, Ill.;

Marty and his wife, Cheryl of Bay Village, Ohio, and Monty of

Newport, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her mother,

Pearl Kerlin, and a sister, Betty Slock, both of Mason City,

Iowa.  She was preceded in death by her father and husband.



Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Monday, April 29, at Gateway

Presbyterian Church in The Dalles.

Hubert B. Fickel was born April 5, 1928 in Argyle, the son of

John W. and Grace M. (Washburn) Fickel.  On Nov. 1, 1947 he married

Eva Hileman in Donnellson.  In 1973 he moved to Forest City where

he worked at Winnebago Industries for 19 years.  He then moved

to Arizona for three years, moving to Little Swan Lake, Ill.,

one year ago.



Survivors include his wife, Eva of Avon, Ill.; one son, Kevin

Fickel of Forest City; three daughters, Mrs. Terry (Tanya) Clark

of Avon, Mrs. Devera Bindel of Forest City, Mrs. Jerry (Linda)

Bowlyou of Aledo, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Mabel Sunden of Fort

and Beverly of Hayward, Minn.; eight grandchildren; five great-

Arthur ``Art'' Angell

NORTHWOOD 



Arthur ``Art'' Angell, 85, of Northwood, died Saturday (May

18, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.



Public Masonic memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday

at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 Eleventh St. S., Northwood,

by the Northern Light Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 266, of Northwood.

According to the wishes of the family, his body will be cremated

with graveside inurnment services at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Greenwood

Cemetery in Thief River Falls, Minn.



The family of Arthur ``Art'' Angell has requested that memorial

contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa or to the First

Lutheran Church, Northwood, in his memory.



Arthur ``Art'' Angell, was born on Nov. 27, 1910, in Lancaster,

Minn., a son of Gustav and Eva (Foss) Schillbred.



He received his education in the Thief River Falls school system,

graduating from Thief River Falls High School.  He also graduated

with a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Minnesota.



Following his schooling, he taught science for several years

in small communities in Minnesota.  Art was also a depot agent

in Manly for several years until the depot closed. He then began

working for the Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company as an insurance

agent until his retirement.



He was united in marriage to Donna Harker on Dec. 13, 1957,

in Manly.  He loved to golf, play cribbage, work in the yard,

grow roses and engage in  woodworking.



He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood where

he also was an usher for several years, Northern Light Masonic

Lodge A.F. & A.M.  No. 266 in Northwood and the Northwood Country

Club.



Survivors include his wife, Donna Angell, of Northwood; one

son, Brian Angell, and his wife, Sally, of Golden, Colo.; two

daughters, Claire Swanger and her husband, Tom, of Sacramento,

Calif., and Terri Larson and her husband, Steve, of Iowa City;

nine grandchildren, Peter, Marcus and Andrea Larson, Natalie

and Amanda Angell, and Michael, Eric, David and Phillip Swanger;

and one brother, Clayton Angell, of Hawley, Minn., as well as

other relatives and friends.



He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Turid

(Tootie), Effie and Shiela.

Kathleen K. Didio, 45, of Belmond, died Saturday (May 18, 1996)

in a car accident east of Belmond.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the

United Methodist Church in Belmond with the Rev. Lowell Halvorson

officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Ewing

Funeral Home in Belmond, where further arrangements are pending.

MASON CITY 



Lodovina ``Lody'' Garrotto, 88, of 1000 First St. N.W., died

Saturday (May 18, 1996) at the I.O.O.F. Home.



A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy

Family Catholic Church, 714 North Adams Ave..  Burial will be

in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.



Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial

Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Catholic Daughters of the

Americas rosary beginning at 4 p.m. and a scriptural prayer service

beginning at 7 p.m.



Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa or to Holy Family

Catholic Church in memory of Lodovina Garrotto.



Lodovina Garrotto was born Sept. 23, 1907, in Albiano D'Ivrea,

province of Torino, northern Italy, daughter of Louis and Clara

(Cauda) Rolla.



She came to the United States in November, 1913, with her paternal

grandmother and aunt to join her parents in Omaha, Neb.



Lody graduated from Omaha Technical High School, Boyles College

and studied law.  She was employed by the law firm of Wear, Moriarity,

Garrotto and Boland in Omaha as a law clerk for several years.



She studied voice under the direction of Professors Flora and

Fred Ellis, and was presented in several concerts.



Lodovina moved to Mason City in 1943.  She worked for the law

firm of Edward and George Dunn.  Later she went to work for attorney

and police judge Bernard Dunn.  In 1951, she was assigned to

the contact office of the Veterans Administration in Mason City.

When that office closed, she was assigned as secretary for the

Federal Aviation Agency at the Mason City Airport.  When that

position was abolished, she refused a transfer to Minneapolis

or Omaha.  She then went to work at Mercy Hospital as a medical

records librarian until she was forced to retire under the Mandatory

Retirement Act at age 65.  After leaving Mercy Hospital, she

went to work for Dr. Merwyn E. Larson, where she worked until

age 79 when she had to retire due to a back injury.



She was a charter board member and was the first treasurer of

the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Credit Union and she was a board

member and secretary for the North Central Iowa Credit Union

League for five years.  She was a member of Holy Family Catholic

Church, the Holy Family Choir and Funeral Choir, a member of

St. Theresa's Circle, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas,

the Joyce Kilmer Study Club and RSVP, and was a member and past

president of North Iowa Mercy Health Center Hospital Auxiliary.



She is survived by one son, Dr. Lewis J. Garrotto, and his wife,

Peggy, of Columbia, Mo.; two daughters, Clarice M. McGlinch and

her husband, Joseph R. McGlinch, of Rochester, Minn., and Sandra

L. Frankl and her husband, Dr. Patrick Frankl, of Philipsberg,

Mont.; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ethel E. Thomas, 80, of Geneva, died Saturday (May 18, 1996)

at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls, of natural causes.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Sietsema-Vogel

Funeral Home, Hampton, with the Rev. Paul Smith officiating.

Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery.



Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Sietsema-Vogel

Funeral Home.



Ethel E. Thomas was born March 2, 1916, in Brownsville.



She is survived by three sons, Frank Lonnie of Alburquerque,

N.M., David of Alden and Douglas of Geneva; a sister, Lulu Daily,

of Nora Springs; nine grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren;

and four great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers

and one half brother.

MASON CITY 



Lola M. Hambly, 68, of 15250 300th St., died Saturday (May

18, 1996) at her home.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hogan-Bremer

Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Joel R. Dahlen

of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church officiating.  Burial will be

in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.



Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today and and continue until

service time Tuesday at the funeral chapel.



Lola M. Hambly was born June 5, 1927, the daughter of Harvey

and Gladys (Patton) Knapp.  She married Glen Hambly on April

12, 1947, in Mason City.



Lola grew up in the Mason City area.  She worked at Swift and

Company for a few years and then worked at the Odd Fellows Home

for 26 years until retiring in 1990.  She had worked with her

husband for the past six years at Rockwell Auto Parts.



She loved playing cards and gambling.  She enjoyed her cats.

Lola was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.



Survivors include her husband, Glen Hambly, of Mason City; one

son, Morris Hambly, and his wife, Barb, of Dumont; one daughter,

Linda King, and her husband, Jack, of Mason City; one brother,

Harvey Knapp, and his wife, Mary Ann, of Mason City; ten grandchildren;

and four great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents.

Philip Joseph Pitzenberger

RAVENWOOD, MO. 



Philip Joseph Pitzenberger, 90, of Ravenwood, Mo., formerly

of Rockwell, died Tuesday (May 14, 1996) at his home after a

brief illness.



Philip Pitzenberger was born May 2, 1906, in Rockwell, Iowa,

a son of Philip and Zita (Huinker) Pitzenberger.



He attended Sacred Heart Academy in Rockwell.



He married Clara Helen Lorenzen on May 5, 1930.  They farmed

in the Rockwell-Sheffield area until 1949, when they moved to

Ravenwood, Mo., where he continued farming until retirement.



Survivors include four daughters, Delores Slagle and her husband,

George, of Des Moines, Marlene Miller and her husband, Byron,

of Ravenwood, Mo., Virginia Frear and her husband, Eugene, of

Maryville, Mo., and Karen Hanson and her husband, Lee, of Fairfax,

Mo.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four brothers,

Amandus of Seneca, Mo., Cletus and his wife, Helen, of Ravenwood,

Mo., John and his wife, Dorothy, of Springdale, Ark., and Richard

and his wife, Virginia, of Rockwell; and numerous nieces and

nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Clara, in

1994; an infant son, Clarence; a daughter, Phyllis; and two brothers.
