Arnie Block

RENWICK



Arnie Block, 79, of Renwick, died Saturday (May 4, 1996) at

Humboldt County Hospital.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's

Lutheran Church, Renwick, with the Rev. John Massey officiating.

Burial will be in Vernon Township Cemetery.  Military graveside

rites will be conducted by members of Harvey-McPeak Post 289.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today  at the Garry-

Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Renwick.



Arnie Block was born April 4, 1917, in Renwick, a son of Claus

and Anna Marie (Ramm) Block.  He was married to Ivabelle A. Clausen

on Oct. 9, 1945, in New York, N.Y.



Arnie was schooled in Renwick and graduated from Renwick High

School in 1934.  He attended the University of Iowa and joined

the U.S. Navy in 1936.  He served his country during Pearl Harbor

on the U.S.S. California.  He retired in 1958 as a lieutenant

commander.



Following his retirement, the couple moved to Renwick where

Arnie worked as a hail adjuster for Dawson Insurance Co., and

was a substitute teacher and a bus driver for 17 years.  He was

active in his community, serving as mayor and councilman for

18 years.  He organized the Memorial Day ceremonies for the past

40 years and belonged to Harvey-McPeak Legion Post  No. 289 of

Renwick.  He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where

he served as chairman of the congregation, was on the council

and was in the choir.



Survivors include his wife, Ivabelle, of Renwick; a son, Mark

Block and his wife, Donna, of Ankeny; a daughter, Lynn Hickock

and her husband, Harlan, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three grandchildren;

three sisters, Myrtle Bump of Moline, Ill., Connie Gillespie

of Wyandotte, Mich., and Eva Steiner and her husband, Howard,

of Hannaford, N.D.; and four brothers, Clem Block and his wife,

Ruth, of Grand Rapids, Mich., Merrill Block and his wife, Ruth,

of Rockford, Mich., Carroll Block and his wife, Jan, of Thompson,

and Ken Block and his wife, Marybelle, of Northwood.



He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Florence.

Darrell (Shorty) Nemmers, 67, of Bancroft, died Saturday (May

4, 1996) at Kossuth County Hospital, Algona.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St.

John Catholic Church, Bancroft, with the Rev. John Thomas officiating.

Burial will be in St. John Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Garry-

Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft.  There will be a

rosary service at 3 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.



Darrell Nemmers was born Jan. 29, 1929, in Bancroft.



He is survived by his wife, Ethel Nemmers of Bancroft; one son,

Jeff Nemmers of Fort Dodge; one grandchild; and a sister, DeEtta

Pearce of Mason City.



He was preceded in death by his parents and four infant sons.

Robert V. Donaldson, 77, of Hampton, died Saturday (May 4,

1996) at his home of natural causes.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hampton

United Methodist Church  with the Rev. Larry McCann officiating.

Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel

Funeral Home, Hampton.



Robert V. Donaldson was born April 26, 1919, in rural Chapin,

a son of William Donaldson and Mary Linn.  He attended  Hampton

High School.  He was married to Wilma M. Claypool on March 4,

1940, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.



He was a warehouse manager at Hampton Wholesale.  He attended

the Hampton United Methodist Church.  He belonged to  Anchor

Lodge  No. 191 A.F. & A.M. in Hampton and was a 53-year Past

Master member and a district lecturer.  He also belonged to Franklin

Chapter  No. 77, Order of Eastern Star,  and was a 52-year Past

Patron member.



Survivors include his wife, Wilma M. Donaldson, of Hampton;

a daughter, Beverly Kellogg, and her husband, Larry, of West

Des Moines; a son, Steve Donaldson and his wife, Thelma, of Hampton;

a sister, Mildred Peters, of Hampton; five grandchildren, Kim

Taylor and her husband, Ken, of West Des Moines, Tim Kellog and

his wife, Ann, of Kansas City, Mo., Shannon Donaldson and his

wife, Melanie, and Shawn and Shane Donaldson, all of Hampton;

and three great-grandchildren, Katie, Kelsey and Megan Kellogg,

all of Kansas City, Mo.



He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three

brothers.

at her home.

of Immanuel Luthean Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakland

Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral

home.



Amy Sharp was born May 5, 1975, in Clayton County.



She is survived by her parents, Franklin and Marcia Larson of

Forest City; and four sisters, Myrna, Deana, Ursula and Kendra

Larson, all of Forest City.

(May 5, 1996) at Heritage Care Center.

126 Third St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements.



Hester Mae Arnold was born Oct. 27, 1911, at Lincoln, Mo., a

daughter of William L. and Ida C. (Davis) Huffman.  She married

Lynn Alva Arnold on Oct. 10, 1928, in Mason City.



Survivors include one son, Duane Arnold of Mason City; six grandchildren;

12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lynn;

and one son, Randall Arnold.

Rose R. Bombella

MASON CITY



Rose R. Bombella, 93, 1107 N. Van Buren Ave., died Friday (May

3, 1996) at the home of her daughter in Mason City following

a lengthy illness.



A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. today at St.

Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E.  The Rev. James

Hayes, associate pastor, will celebrate the Mass.  Burial will

be in  Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.



Visitation was held Sunday at the Fullerton Patterson-James

Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E.  A scriptural wake service

and a Mexican rosary followed.



Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct  memorials

to the family.



Mrs. Bombella, the former Rose Ramirez, was born Aug. 30, 1902,

in Del Rio, Texas, a daughter of Hiladio and Mary Jesse (Flores)

Ramirez.  On Nov. 10, 1917, in Del Rio, she married Jose Bombella.



The couple made their home in St. Paul, Minn., and West Des

Moines.  They moved to Mason City in 1928, where Mr. Bombella

owned and operated his barber shop.  Following Mr. Bombella's

death in Mason City in 1940, Mrs. Bombella began a career as

a laundress at the former American Ideal Laundry for five years

and the Mason City Laundry for 14 years.



Mrs. Bombella was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

She was known for her expertise in Mexican cooking, and will

be remembered as being a special friend to many.



Living family members include five children and their spouses,

Juanita and Jay Miller, Esther and David Acosta, John and Phyllis

Bombella and Phillip and Gladys Bombella, all of Mason City,

and Benjamin and Judy Bombella of Des Moines; 24 grandchildren;

24 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a

special friend, Ninfa Monteon of Mason City.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings,

two sons, a daughter and three grandchildren.

HELENDALE,  Calif. 



Services for former Mason City, Iowa, resident, Larry Lindsay,

71, were held April 25, 1996, at the Victor Valley Mortuary,

Victorville, Calif.



Larry died on Monday, April 22, 1996, following a heart attack.



He was born in Mason City, Iowa, on Dec. 30, 1924, to Lester

and Vesta Lindsay.



He attended school in Mason City, Iowa, graduating with the

class of 1943.



He then enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the

South Pacific Theater.



On June 3, 1944, he was married to Carol Thornbury, also from

Mason City, Iowa.



Upon his retirement, they made their home at 27355 Strawberry

Lane, Helendale, Calif., where Larry enjoyed playing  golf nearly

every day.



He is survived by his wife, Carol; two sons, Michael and his

wife, Patty, of Victorville, Calif., and Danny and his wife,

Debbie, of Canby, Ore.; one daughter, Joan Thornton of Hesperia,

Calif.; 11 grandchildren; his mother, Vesta Lindsay, of Clear

Lake, Iowa; a brother, Jerry and his wife, Katie, of Clear Lake,

Iowa; in-laws, Betty and James Chestnut, Bonnie and Bob Haberkorn,

Margaret Thornbury, all of Mason City, Iowa; and Maynard Thornbury

and his wife, Lavonne, of Agoura Hills, Calif. Numerous nieces

and nephews also survive him.

Robert Homer Cook, 5363 Lake Arrowhead Trail, Sarasota, Fla.,

died Friday (May 3, 1996).



A memorial service will be held Wednesday in Sarasota, Fla.



Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home, 7454 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota,

Fla., is in charge of arrangements.



Memorials may be given to Covenant Life Presbyterian Church,

Sarasota, Fla., in his memory.



Robert was born April 29, 1923, in Milwaukee, Wis., son of Lloyd

L. and Jessie Cook.



He attended Whitefish Bay High School and Milwaukee University

School, graduated from MUS in 1941.



He attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis,. before entering

the armed service on Dec. 11, 1942.



He served with the 5th Army during the Italian Campaign of World

War II, achieving the rank of Staff Sgt. and was discharged on

April 2, 1946.



He attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, before joining

the family business, the L.L. Cook Company in Milwaukee.



After a period of time, he was transferred to Mason City where

he managed the Co-Mo Photo Company. The business was sold to

the GAF Corp. where he stayed on as manager until being transferred

to Florida in the early 1970s.



He is survived by his wife, Dee; two daughters, Mary Jo Cook

of Littleton, Colo., and Sue Ann Kafer of Mason City, Iowa; and

five grandchildren, all of Mason City; two sisters, Jane Hadley

of Boca Raton, Fla., and Betty Smith of Delray Beach, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters.

at the home of her daughter in Swea City.

Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in New Hampton.



Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the Schumburg Funeral

Home, Rockford, with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m.



Helen was married to Clinton A. Ward on Sept. 14, 1932, in St.

Charles, Minn.  She lived in Rockford for 50 years, was a member

of  Holy Name Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society.



Helen is survived by three daughters, Myrna (Mrs. Eino) Hirv

of Seaford, Va.; Hazel Kollman of Gurnee, Ill., and Connie Perry

of Swea City; nine grandchildren, Pam Dzick of Clear Lake; Kristie

Hilliard of Gloucester, Va.; Kelly McCoy of Sevierville, Tenn.;

Craig Kollman of Eden Prairie, Minn.; Kelly Kollman of Arlington,

Va.; Eric Ward of Columbus, Ohio; Kristen Ward of Ithaca, N.Y.;

Tim Perry of Iowa City; and Nathan Perry of Swea City; five great-

grandchildren; and two brothers, Walter Bateman of Cresco and

Leonard Bateman of West Des Moines.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton; her parents,

Elmer E. Bateman and Ellen E. (McGee) Bateman; two sons, Gary

and Tim; a sister, Hazel Klass; two brothers, Kenneth and Raymond

Bateman; and two grandsons, Kevin and David Ward.

home.

Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.



Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at Champion Funeral Home

and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.



Dennis Benttine was born June 25, 1959, in Osage.



Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, of Osage; two daughters,

Rose and Heather Benttine, both of Osage; his parents, LeRoy

and Joanne Benttine of St. Ansgar; two grandmothers, Alice Benttine

of Osage, and Lydia Hawkins of Cottonwood, Ariz.; one sister,

Connie Wagner of Osage; and one brother, Carl Benttine of Osage.



He was preceded in death by two grandfathers.

Dorothy Witte Hollis

Dorothy Witte Hollis, 65, formerly of Rockwell, died Wednesday

(May 1, 1996) at her home in Blanchard, Okla.



Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 1996,

at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Oklahoma City, Okla.



Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18,

1996, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, in Rockwell.



The Cremation Society of Oklahoma City, Okla., is in charge

of arrangements.



Since settling in Blanchard, Okla., in 1983, Dorothy and James

became avid gardeners and Dorothy especially loved her flowers.

In addition to her green thumb and excellent homemaking skills,

Dorothy enjoyed needlepoint and various other hobbies and crafts.



The past few years, Dorothy and James enjoyed  traveling in

their motor home, always accompanied by their faithful dogs,

Tiffany and Buttons.



She is survived by her husband, James V. Hollis of Blanchard,

Okla.; mother, Mary Witte, of Rockwell; brothers and sisters-in-law,

Ralph and Helen Witte of Brown Deer, Wis., and Lloyd and Marianne

Witte, of Greenbay, Wis.; nieces, Michelle and Cindy; nephews,

Steve and Doug; aunt and uncle, Fern and Martin Dahl, numerous

cousins and many loving friends.



She was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Witte of Rockwell.

Hans C. Henriksen, 92, formerly of Clear Lake, died Sunday

(May 5, 1996) at the Innsbruck Care Center, New Brighton, Minn.



Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran

Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess

officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 8:30

until 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel,

Clear Lake, and one hour prior to the services at the church.



The family suggest memorials to Zion Lutheran Church or Opportunity

Village.



Hans was born Aug.13, 1903, in Grant Township, Cerro Gordo County,

the son of Ole and Kisten Marie (Nielsen) Henriksen.



He attended rural school in Grant Township, Cerro Gordo County.



Hans was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in 1903 and confirmed

in 1917.



Hans married Lillian Ella Christiansen on Feb 18, 1925, in Clear

Lake.



Hans had farmed and lived in the Clear Lake community all of

his life until having to move to the Innsbruck Care Center, New

Brighton, Minn., in 1994 due to ill health.



Hans was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake,

served on the board of trustees and was a past president of the

congregation. He was chairman of the fund drive when the new

church was built in 1965 and chairman of the centennial committee

of Zion in 1972.



He was a member of the board of directors of Handicap Village

1974-1986; board of director a number of years at the Co-op Creamery

in Clear Lake; board of director for Clear Lake Bank and Trust

since its organization in 1934; board of directors 21 years and

past president of  Farmers Lumber and Elevator Co-op, Mason City;

18 years as board of director of North Iowa Soybean Co-op, Mason

City; 18 years as board of directors Cerro Gordo Education; board

of director for 30 years Farmers Gas and Oil Company, Mason City;

Cerro Gordo Farm Bureau member; Clear Lake Rotary; board of directors

of  American Red Cross; Executive Club of North Iowa; Golden

Wedding Club; Retired Farmers; and the Republican Party.



Hans is survived by two sons, Ronald Henriksen and his wife,

Phyllis, of South Milwaukee, Wis., and the Rev. Veryle Henriksen,

and his wife, Peggy, of New Brighton, Minn.; one daughter, Donna

Rae Skovgaard, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 12 grandchildren;

and 25 great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Donald; his

wife, Lillian; one sister, Signe; and a son-in-law, S.L. Skovgaard.

Vera Ellen Webb, 93, of Grinnell, died Friday (May 3, 1996)

at St.  Francis Manor.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the

Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell, with the Rev. Homer Perry officiating.

Interment will be in Colo Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Smith

Funeral Home, with a 7 p.m. Eastern Star service.



The daughter of Bert and Luticia Flint Shaw Gruver Sr., Vera

was born Nov. 14, 1902 in Gruver. Her father worked for the railroad

and she lived and was educated in several communities in Iowa.



She was married to Glenn William Webb on Oct. 5, 1925, in Mason

City.



The couple resided in Rockford, Iowa Falls, Sioux Falls, S.D.,

and Gilman.



She moved to Grinnell in 1983 and most recently had been a resident

of St. Francis Manor.



She was a 50-plus year member of the Order of Eastern Star and

was currently a member of the Onyx Chapter #350 in Gilman.



Vera held a high regard for her home and family. Her interests

included crocheting, sewing, cooking and canning.



She enjoyed writing letters and was a good correspondent. She

had a wonderful sense of humor.



She is survived by her children and their spouses, Donald and

Ramona Webb of Delta, Colo.; Betty and Henry Thompson of Grinnell,

and James W. and Patricia Webb, of Lytle, Texas; one sister,

Mabel Turner of Rockford; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren;

and one great-great-grandchild.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four

brothers, John, Cecil, Walter and Bert Jr.; one sister, Eleanor

Pringle; and one grandson.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Leonard W. Noack was born Feb. 28, 1911, at Grand Ridge, Ill.



Survivors include his wife, Lilian, of Clarion; one daughter,

Louise Hammam, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two sons, Leonard of Bellevue,

Neb., and John of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren; and eight

great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one

sister.

Hans C. Henriksen, 92, formerly of Clear Lake, died Sunday

Hans was born Aug. 13, 1903, in Grant Township, Cerro Gordo

County, the son of Ole and Kisten Marie (Nielsen) Henriksen.



He attended rural school in Grant Township Cerro Gordo County.



Hans was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in 1903 and confirmed

in 1917.



Hans married Lillian Ella Christiansen on Feb. 18, 1925, in

Clear Lake.



Hans had farmed and lived in the Clear Lake community all of

his life until having to move to the Innsbruck Care Center, New

Brighton, Minn., in 1994 due to ill health.



Hans was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake,

and served on the board of trustees and was a past president

of the congregation. He was chairman of the fund drive when the

new church was built in 1965 and chairman of the centennial committee

of Zion in 1972.



He was a member of the board of directors of Handicap Village

1974-1986; on board of directors a number of years at the Co-op

Creamery in Clear Lake; on board of directors of Clear Lake Bank

and Trust since its organization in 1934; on board of directors

21 years and past president of Farmers Lumber and Elevator Co-op,

Clear Lake; longtime board member of North Iowa Fair Board, serving

as secretary and manager for 10 years; on board of directors

of North Iowa Soybean Co-op, Mason City; 18 years on board of

directors of Cerro Gordo Education; on board of directors for

30 years of Farmers Gas and Oil Company, Mason City; Cerro Gordo

Farm Bureau member; Clear Lake Rotary; on board of directors

of  American Red Cross; Executive Club of North Iowa; Golden

Wedding Club; Retired Farmers; and the Republican Party.



Hans is survived by two sons, Ronald Henriksen and his wife,

Phyllis, of South Milwaukee, Wis., and the Rev. Veryle Henriksen,

and his wife, Peggy, of New Brighton, Minn.; one daughter, Donna

Rae Skovgaard, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 12 grandchildren;

and 25 great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Donald; his

wife, Lillian; one sister, Signe; and a son-in-law, S.L. Skovgaard.

at the University of Minnesota Hospital, Minneapolis.

Sharon McElwee was born March 26, 1950, in Waterloo, to Wayne

E. and June Belle (Gallagher) Pope.



She attended school in Mason City, and graduated from Mason

City High School in 1968. She then attended the Open Bible College

in Des Moines for one year.



Sharon returned to Mason City after college and worked for the

A.C. Nielsen Company for several years until her marriage.



She was united in marriage to Melvin McElwee on Aug. 2, 1975,

at the Open Bible Church in Clear Lake.



The couple has made their home north of Armstrong since that

time where they farmed and operated Iowa Lake Sales and Service.



Sharon like to crochet, fish and loved the outdoors.



She was a member of the Open Bible Church in Swea City, where

she was the church secretary, bookkeeper, a musician, Sunday

school teacher and active in the Women's Ministries.



Survivors include her husband, Melvin McElwee of Armstrong;

a daughter, Erin McElwee of Armstrong; a son, Wesley McElwee

of Armstrong; and a daughter, Leah McElwee of Armstrong; her

parents, Wayne and June Pope of Mason City; paternal grandmother,

Alice Pope, of Mason City; two sisters, Sandy Peck and her husband,

Victor, and Lori Wisner and her husband, Terry, all of Mason

City; and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by two sisters, Linda and Marcia;

her paternal grandfather; and maternal grandparents.

Ruby Catherine Sullivan, 84, of Rockford, died Monday (May

6, 1996) at her home in Rockford.

Ruby was born Nov. 24, 1911, the daughter of James Seth and

Alice Elizabeth Duffy Canoe at Monona.



She was a resident of Rockford since July of 1937.



Ruby became a registered nurse in 1933 as a graduate of the

three year nursing program at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason

City. She was the night supervisor at the hospital for several

years.



On Sept. 30, 1943, Ruby became the bride of Bernard C. Sullivan

at Camp Stoneman, Calif.



She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Altar

and Rosary Society.



Ruby is survived by her daughter, Ann Sullivan of Manchester;

two sisters, Mable Daly and Mary Gayther, both  of Charles City;

and a  granddaughter, Ann Sullivan of Waterloo.

County. He was working on a corn planter when it fell on him.

Larry D. Anderson was born Dec. 20, 1940, in Emmet County, to

He was united in marriage to Kay Satern on June 24, 1962, in

McIntire. She preceded him in death on June 17, 1994.



He was a farmer.



He was a member of the United Methodist Church, McIntire, and

a board member of Farmers Mutual Insurance of Osage.



He was on the board of the Riceville Community School. He was

treasurer of Wayne Township.



Survivors include his parents, Gotchel ``Pete'' and Mable Anderson

of Riceville; his parentsinlaw, Maynard and Wilma Satern of Riceville;

his children, Kim Knudsen and her husband, James, of St. Ansgar;

David Anderson of Riceville; Kelly Wix and her husband, Kurt,

residence.

Rolland was born Feb. 16, 1916, in Lynd, Minn., the son

of Elmer Leslie and Essa (Langworth) Sharratt. He moved to Clear

Lake in 1936 and worked for Ed Rushia. Rolland married Irma Maassen

on Sept. 10, 1937, in Redwood Falls, Minn.



Rolland worked for Sam Kennedy until 1945, then he started

farming in the Clear Lake area until 1960. He then worked for

Jim and Jack Kennedy until his retirement in 1986.



Rolland enjoyed riding his moped. He was a member of XYZ

Club; North Iowa Golden Wedding Club; I.O.O.F. Lodge 187, Clear

Lake; and Tina Rebekah Lodge 105, Clear Lake, where he also served

as treasurer for 13 years. He attended Clear Lake United Methodist

Church.



He is survived by his wife, Irma, of Clear Lake; two daughters,

Laura Jean Austin and her husband, Bill, of Mason City, and Betty

Ann Gosselin and her husband, Andy, of Liverpool, N.Y.; a son,

David Allen Sharratt and his wife, Russie, of Wilmington, N.C.;

two brothers, John Sharratt and his wife, Dorothy, of Baraboo,

Wis., and Richard Sharratt and his wife, Vesta, of Lancaster,

Calif.; three sisters, Irene Richards of Las Vegas, Nev., Marian

Johnson and her husband, Lloyd, of Denver, Colo., and Gladys

Weikert and her husband, Gordon, of Dresser, Wis.; six grandchildren,

Robert Austin, Lori Anderson, Dineen Gosselin, Andrew Gosselin,

Mark Sharratt and Wanda Sharratt; and two greatgrandchildren,

Kenneth E. Lockwood, 83, of Emmetsburg, formerly of Mallard, died

Tuesday (May 7, 1996) at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.



Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United

Methodist Church, Mallard, with the Rev. Donald Bogue officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Schellhammer-

Harris Funeral Home, Mallard.



Casket bearers are Richard Nighbert, Victor Kruel, Jack Kruel,

Ronald Lockwood, Galen Olsberg and Verlyn Olsberg.



Kenneth Lockwood, son of Frank and Ruth Witter Lockwood, was

born Sept. 21, 1912, at Winfred, S.D.



He attended school at Winfred, graduating from the Winfred High

School in 1931.



He married Darlene Nighbert at Madison, S.D. on July 2, 1937.



After their marriage, the couple lived in Junius, S.D., where

Kenneth was the manager of Peavey Elevator.



He also operated ``Lockwood Service Station.'' In addition,

he was a mail carrier and did some trucking. In 1942, the couple

moved to Mallard where they farmed until his retirement in 1975.

They moved to Emmetsburg in 1994.



Kenneth was a member of the United Methodist Church of Mallard;

the Masonic Lodge #399 (Ernest Lodge) of Emmetsburg; the Palo

Alto County Extension Council; the Farmers Home Administration

board of directors; president of the Palo Alto County Farmers

Union; and served on the Farmers Union State Board for many years.



Kenneth enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing.



Survivors include his wife, Darlene, of Emmetsburg; a son, Gary,

of Hampton, Ill.; and a daughter, Sharon Mileham, of Sheffield;

four grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren; and a sister,

Leah Olsberg, of Bennington, Neb.



He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers:

Harold, Virgil and Dwight.

Raymond Karl Landers was born Sept. 30, 1922, in rural Coldwater

Township, Butler County, a son of William and Martha (Meyne)

Landers, and died Tuesday (May 7, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health

Center West, Mason City.



He was baptized on Dec. 19, 1922, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church

in Greene and attended rural school nearby the family farm. Growing

up on the farm and in the years following he helped his father

with various chores and enjoyed driving the tractor. Following

the death of his father he lived with his sisters, Esther and

Irene, until entering the Liebe Care Center in Greene.



Ray had many special interests which included collecting baseball

cards, building things out of scrap lumber, watching the geese

and pheasants at the farm, and drawing pictures. He was an avid

New York Yankees fan, and an Iowa Hawkeye fan.



Living family members include three sisters, Esther Landers,

Irene Landers, and Emma and Gerald Wagner, all of Greene; two

brothers, Wilbur and Ellene Landers, and Ardean and Inez Landers,

both of Greene.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Delores

Fuoss; and one brother, Leo Landers.

John P. Ried was born March 27, 1931, in Des Moines, a son of

Carl and Flossie (Nunn) Ried. He graduated from Roosevelt High

School in Des Moines. John worked for Economy Fire and Casualty

in Mason City for 41 years. He also was a driver for Yellow Cab

of Mason City for many years.



On June 7, 1953, he was united in marriage to Nancy J. Wilkie

at the Jefferson Center Country Church near Menlo. John was a

faithful member of the First Assembly of God Church in Mason

City and served many years as board member and an elder. He also

did a lot of printing for the church.



Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Nancy Ried,

of Mason City; four sons, Rev. Richard Ried and his wife, Debbie,

of Sioux Falls, S.D., Daniel Ried and his wife, Camille, of Dallas,

Texas, Michael Ried and his wife, Sally, of Bartlesville, Texas,

and Stephen Ried and his wife, Isolde, of Germany; 14 grandchildren,

Holly, Chanelle, Justin, Nathaniel, Landon, Myrandy, Quinn, Glori

Stella Hill, 89, of Mason City, formerly of Garner, died

Wednesday (May 8, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery. Graveside

Stella Irene Hill, a daughter of Rasme and Carrie Helena (Bang)

Matson was born July 26, 1906, at Ellsworth. After graduating

from Eagle Grove High School in 1926, she worked in Chicago from

193043. She was married to Charles H. Hill in Chicago, Ill. on

June 15, 1935.



She served her country in the U.S. Army, with the rank of sergeant

in the W.A.C. Stella was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colo.,

and Paris, France. After the war, she resumed working in Chicago

until 1953 when she began working in San Diego, Calif. After

her retirement in 1970, she lived in San Diego and from 198793,

at Prairie View Apartments in Garner. In 1993, she moved to Shalom

Tower in Mason City and later lived with her niece and husband,

Carren and John Schaer of Mason City. She enjoyed traveling to

Hawaii, Scandinavia and other European countries.



She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner and the

W.A.C. Veteran's, Chapter #50, in San Diego.



Survivors include two nieces, Carren Schaer of Mason City and

Janet Swanson of Federal Way, Wash.; a nephew, Bill Matson, of

Sparks, Nev.; and a sisterinlaw, Enola Matson, of Matteson, Ill.



She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ruth

Smed and Marie Gotfried; and three brothers, Ralph Matson, Howard

Mrs. Michael (Marilyn R.) Scoville, 59, of Mason City, died

Tuesday (May 7, 1996) at home.

with the Rev. David R. Shogren officiating. Burial will be in

Marilyn, the daughter of Ervin and Ruth Fisher, was born in

Floyd County on Nov. 10, 1936.



She later moved to Mason City with her family and attended school

here. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1956.



On March 17, 1957, she was united in marriage to Michael R.

Scoville at Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City.



While the couple served in the United States Navy, a son, Michael

Raymond was born on Jan. 30, 1962, in Neuillysur Siene, France.



Mr. Scoville retired from the Navy in 1967, and the family has

since made their home in Mason City. Another son, Melvin Richard,

was born Nov. 12, 1971.



Mrs. Scoville has not been well the last several years, but

her ``three men'' have been the love and joy of her life.



She is survived by her husband, Michael Scoville of Mason City;

two sons, Michael Scoville Jr. of Boone, Iowa, and Melvin Scoville,

of Cedar Rapids; her mother, Ruth Fisher, of Mason City; one

brother, Dr. Darrell Fisher, and his wife, Susan, of Mason City;

one sister, Jeannette Kloberdanz and her husband, William, of

Mason City; four nephews; and three nieces. She will be sadly

missed by all.



Marilyn was preceded in death by her father, Ervin Fisher in

1967.

Minnie Caroline Hendrickson, 91, of Northwood, died Tuesday

Minnie Caroline Hendrickson was born on Oct. 27, 1904, in Gowrie,

Iowa, in Webster County, the daughter of Fred and Minnie (Berner)

Kruse.



She attended and received her education in the rural country

school system near Northwood. After completing her formal education,

she helped her parents on the family farm.



She was united in marriage to Earl Patterson on Nov. 3, 1924,

in Northwood. He preceded her in death in 1933.



After their marriage, together they farmed in the Fort Dodge

area until his death.



Shortly after his death in 1933, she moved into Northwood, where

she cleaned, did housework, cooking and washing for various families

in the Northwood area.



She also worked at the Paramount and Chat & Chew Restaurants

in Northwood for several years and worked as a cook for the Northwood

schools until her retirement.



She was united in marriage to Pearl Hendrickson on June 30,

1951. He preceded her in death on Sept. 10, 1973.



She enjoyed crocheting, tating, canning fruits and vegetables,

cooking, flowers and gardening.



She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Northwood

and the church circle, and was also a member of the Northwood

Senior Citizens Center.



Survivors include one son, Virgil Patterson, and his wife, Barbara,

of Sun City, Calif.; three stepchildren, Delbert Hendrickson

of Des Moines, Merle Hendrikson, (NOTE: spelling without ``c'') 

of Mason City, and Jean Flatness of Northwood; 12 grandchildren;

13 greatgrandchildren; one sister, Bertha Dishon of Northwood;

as well as other relatives and friends.

Geneva High School in 1947.  Howard married Loretta K. DeBour

on April 2, 1955, in the Zion Reformed Church at Sheffield.

Howard farmed and lived near Swaledale his entire married life.

He also worked for Felco Land of Lakes in Mason City, retiring

in 1990 after 28 years.  Howard enjoyed camping and his grandchildren.



He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Swaledale,

and he served on the board of the Pleasant Valley Apartments

in Swaledale.



Survivors include his wife, Loretta K. Janssen of Swaledale;

two sons, Steve Janssen and his wife, Anietra, of LeMars, and

Mark Janssen and his wife, Susan, of Maple Grove, Minn.; two

grandchildren, Amy and Eric Janssen of LeMars; one sister, Edna

Schabel and her husband, Glenn, of Sheffield; and one brother,

Marvin Janssen and his wife, Betty, of Hampton.



He was preceded in death by his parents.

OSAGE 



Ruth E. Lewis, 88, of Osage, died Wednesday (May 8, 1996) at

the Faith Home.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the

United Church of Christ with the Rev. John Gilbert officiating.

Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until service time at

the church on Saturday.  Champion Funeral Home is in charge of

arrangements.



Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Home in Osage for

the purchase of fingertip blood pressure and oxygen saturation

equipment.



Ruth E. Lewis was born April 22, 1908, in Toronto, S.D.



Survivors include one daughter, Jeannette Lewis Merijanian of

Montevallo, Ala.; one sister, Norma Lauen of Mason City; one

brother, Richard Hetland of Winchester, Va.; four grandchildren;

and seven great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers

and three sisters.

GARNER 



Don F. Larkin, 48, of Garner, died Wednesday (May 8, 1996) at

his home as the result of an apparent homicide.



Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Presbyterian

Church in Garner with the Rev. Willis Nicholson and the Rev.

Kevin McDonald as officiants.  Graveside military rites will

be conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.  Burial

will be in Concord Township Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo

Funeral Chapel at 160 E. Fourth St., Garner.



Memorials will be used for an Educational Fund for his sons.



Donald Ford Larkin, the son of Donald Eugene and Elnore Ruth

(Bowers) Larkin, was born Nov. 30, 1947, at Rockford, Ill.  He

was baptized March 28, 1948, at the State Street Evangelical

Church in Rockford, Ill.  In 1948, Don moved with his family

to Garner where he graduated from Garner-Hayfield High School

in 1966.  He entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 10, 1968, and served

in Vietnam until his discharge in 1970.  After the service, he

returned to Garner and attended NIACC in Mason City.  On June

12, 1982, he married Barbara Toncar at the United Presbyterian

Church in Garner.  He had been employed by REC in Garner since

1966, with time out during his military service.  He was a purchasing

agent and safety coordinator for REC.



He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church where he had

served as an Elder, Garner VFW, Garner City Council, was president

of the Garner Chamber of Commerce and was a former Iowa state

vice president and national director of the Jaycees, and had

received the Jaycees Outstanding Young Men of America Award for

1975.



He is survived by his sons, Shawn Larkin and Jay Larkin of Garner;

his stepson, Brian Formanek of Garner; his parents, Don E. and

Elnore Larkin of Garner; a special friend, Jean Richey of Britt,

and her four daughters, Hollie, Brandi, Rachael and Bobbi; two

sisters, Karen Brooks of Garner, and her two children, Kirstie

Stifel and Michael Brooks, and Debra Ptacek and her husband,

Gerald, of Cedar Rapids, and their children, Chadd, Travis, Lindsey

and Lucas; and a brother, Cpt. Kevin Larkin and his wife, Julie,

of Clarksville, Tenn., and their two children, Jasa and Jessica.
