Bert J. Wright, 73, of Iowa Falls, died Friday (May 10, 1996)
at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's
Catholic Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Gerald Condon officiating.
Burial will be in St. Mark's Cemetery, with full military rites
conducted by the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post #188 of Iowa
Falls.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Surls
Funeral Home, 505 Stevens St., Iowa Falls, with the family receiving
friends from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be a 7 p.m. parish wake service
Sunday at the Surls Funeral Home.
Bert J. Wright was born July 7, 1922, in Sanborn, to Delbert
and Maggie (Foley) Wright.
He was a 1941 graduate of Primghar High School.
He served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945.
He was united in marriage to Dorothy Murphy on Oct. 12, 1942,
at Sheldon.
He was a real estate farm broker for Jackson Wright and then
for Leonard Wright.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Iowa Falls; one son,
Dan of Iowa Falls; four daughters, Donna Echelberger of Crowley,
Texas; Susan Reicks of Rogers, Ariz.; Diane Kruse of Des Moines,
and Lori Larson of Mason City; a sister, Doris Raymond of Sanborn;
eight grandchildren, David Wright, Scott Fouts, Christopher and
Trenton Reicks, Angela Wilkinson, Debi Fouts, Jennifer and Lacie
Oliver; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jim; one brother;
and two sisters.

at Omaha, Neb.

Bessie I. Wilson was born Oct. 21, 1903, in Shelby County.
Survivors include one son, Glen Brand, of Omaha, Neb.; and one
grandson.

A memorial service for Dr. Dennis Buffington, 44, of Colorado

at the Belmond Community Hospital.

in Clarion officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery,
Rowan.

Della was born May 22, 1909, at Getaway, Ohio.
Survivors include two daughters, Bertha Dockwell and June Chapman,
both of Belmond; three stepdaughters, Della Marie Miller of Ames,
Geraldine Bisbee of Blairsburg, and Marilyn Sherrow of Arizona;
stepson, Bill Breitenkamp of Blairsburg; a brother, Albert Langdon
of Spring Valley, Minn.; four grandchildren; and three great-
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband
and her second husband.

Gregorio Rubio, 75, of 1540 N. Jefferson Ave., died Wednesday
(May 8, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph
Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. John R. Kremer
officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with a
flag folding ceremony conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial
Association.
Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial
Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a 7 p.m. Scriptural prayer service,
followed by a Spanish rosary.
Memorials may be made to the Gregorio Rubio Memorial Fund.
Gregorio was born Dec. 12, 1920, in Encinal, Texas, the son
of Jose Rubio Jr. and Refugia (Gonzalez) Rubio.
He married Guadalupe Aquilar on Jan. 6, 1951, at St. Joseph
Catholic Church, Mason City.
He served in the United States Air Force during World War II
and received the American Theater Ribbon Victory Medal.
He was employed 33 years at Armour and retired in December of
1983.
He is survived by his wife, Guadalupe Rubio, of Mason City;
three daughters, Lola Kurlansky and her husband, Alan, of Philadelphia,
Pa.; Julie Rubio of Mason City, and Juanita Rubio of Waterloo;
one son, Jose Rubio III, and his wife, Sharon, of Mason City;
two grandchildren, Ahsiya and Jilan Kurlansky, both of Philadelphia,
Pa.; one brother, Alberto Rubio, of Mason City; three sisters,
Angela Zuniga, of Orlando, Fla.; Victoria Tapia, of Ramblewood
Way, Calif., and Felipa R. Cortez, of Lansing, Mich.; and many
special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Trinidad
C. Rubio; and one brother in infancy.

Harold H. Kappmeyer, 73, of 1404 N. Shore Drive, died Thursday

Harold was born Jan. 10, 1923, in Frederika, the son of William
Henry and Anna (Kerkoff) Kappmeyer.
He graduated from Frederika High School in 1942 and attended
Luther College in Decorah.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II, a
member of the SeaBees.
On June 29, 1947, he was united in marriage to Elaine Boeckman
in Tripoli.
He owned and operated the Frederika Hardware Store from 1948-53.
The couple then moved to Cedar Falls, where he was a AAA agent.
In 1963, he transferred with AAA to Clear Lake.
He later traveled as a salesman for Belknap hardware supplies
in the North Iowa area.
He was employed at Unisys in Clear Lake for 10 years until his
retirement in 1990.
He was a great handyman who could fix almost anything and enjoyed
woodworking. He also loved to fish and hunt.
In Cedar Falls, he was very active at St. Paul's Lutheran Church,
serving as a Sunday school teacher, and holding other offices.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Kappmeyer, of Clear Lake;
three sons, Allan Kappmeyer and his wife, JoAnne, of Clear Lake,
Lynn Kappmeyer of Mason City, and Brian Kappmeyer of Indianapolis,
Ind.; a sister, Leona Poock and her husband, Reuben, of Waterloo;
a sister-in-law, Norma Kappmeyer, of Tripoli; a brother, Ervin
Peterson, of Readlyn; six grandchildren, Dan Copley, Jake Kappmeyer,
Marc Kappmeyer, Nicole Copley, Elizabeth Kappmeyer and Serina
Kappmeyer; and one great-grandchild, Zachary Copley.

Minn. She married Ronald R.Carpenter.
She is survived by, her husband, Ronald R. Carpenter of Mason
City; two sons, Randy Dean Carpenter and his wife Carol of Amarillo,
Texas; Tracy Lee Carpenter and his wife Patty of Manly; three
grandchildren, Eric, Lauren and Chad; three sisters, Joretta
Jensen of Albert Lea, Minn., Arliss Davis of Oakland, Minn.,
and Phyllis Christenson of Silverdale, Wash.; several nieces
and nephews.

Dale W. Grady, 79, of 1507 S. Wilson, died Sunday (May 12, 1996)
at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Peace Lutheran Church, 670 12th Street N.E., with the Rev. Donald
Main officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

at Major Erickson Funeral Home 209 Second St. N.E. and one hour

Dale W. Grady was born July 31, 1916 the son of Harry L. and
Minnie (White) Grady in Rockford. Dale attended School in rural
Rockford and lived at Rockford until he was 20 years old. Dale
came to Mason City in 1936 and married Renelda A. George on July
3, 1936 in Mason City. Dale worked for Jacob E. Decker & Sons
Packing Plant until he was drafted into the United States Airforce
during World War II. Upon returning home from the War to Mason
City he worked for Cadwell Storage and then later owned and operated
Grady Wallwashing and Painting Business for 45 years, retiring
earlier this year. Dale was an avid stock car fan and raced
cars of his own. He also enjoyed caring for his yard.
Dale was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rendelda Grady of Mason City; two
sons, Martin Grady and wife Faye of Mason City, Ted Grady and
wife Marie of Mason City; six grandchildren, Kathy Arnold and
Debbie Pumphrey, both of Mason City, Becky Baack of Clear Lake,
Martin Dean Grady of Dinuba, Calif., Scott Grady of Cedar Rapids,
and Sara Curtis of Mason City; seven great-grandchildren, Andrew,
Candice, Benjamin, Derek, Cristian, Samuel and Sonya; one sister,
Lura Havey and husband Dick of Nora Springs; several Nieces and
Nephews.

Mark was born on December 28, 1964, in Mason City the son of
Gary Winters Sr. and Barb Olson Winters. He attended school
at the Mason City High School and then entered the Army. After
two years he was honorable discharged. He was employed by Charlson
construction company of Marble Rock and did roofing work on his
own. He also was currently a cook at Clancey's II in Marble
Rock. He was often found on his dirt bike, fishing or spending
time with his children.
Mark is survived by his special friend Stacy Yezek, his son
Evan, both of Marble Rock, and his daughter Ashley of Watertown,
SD; one step-son Nathan Germundson of Marble Rock, his mother
Barb Query of Mason City, his father Gary and wife Cheryl Winters

at the Manly Care Center.

The family of Gertrude W. Tarr has requested that memorial contributions
be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly in her
memory.
Gertrude W. Tarr was born on April 20, 1901, in rural Manly,
in Worth County, the daughter of Carl and Eliza (Dobel) Benjegerdes.
She attended and received her education in the Lincoln Township
#8 School in rural Worth County and also attended Northwood High
School for one year before graduating from the Manly High School
in 1919.
After completing her formal education, she attended and received
her Normal Teacher Training in Osage.
After completing her education, she taught school for one year
at the Lincoln Township #8 School in rural Worth County.
She was united in marriage to Leman Northway on June 8, 1921,
in Manly. He preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 1935.
After their marriage, together they farmed northwest of Manly
and then northeast of Manly, until her husband's death, when
she moved back with her parents on their farm southwest of Manly
in 1937 until 1956, when she moved to Cedar Falls and worked
as a cook, laundry person and also as a nurses assistant at the
Western Home in Cedar Falls until her retirement in 1972.
She was united in marriage to George Tarr on Sept. 24, 1957.
He preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 1992.
After their marriage, they continued to live in Cedar Falls
until his death, when she moved to Manly in October of 1993.
She enjoyed tatting, quilting and flowers, especially African
violets, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and
grandchildren.
She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly.
Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Wayne Northway
and his wife, Lois, of Manly, and Aven Northway and his wife,
Corrine, of Denver, Colo.; two daughters, Grace Tyner and her
husband, Layton ``Joe,'' of Sarasota, Fla., and Joan Coughlin
of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Irene Gorkowski of Rock Falls; one
brother, Leslie Benjegerdes and his wife, Eleanor, of Manly;
one sister-in-law, Florence Benjegerdes of Mason City; 14 grandchildren;
23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren;
as well as other relatives and friends.
Besides her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents;
one son, Lowell Northway; one great-grandson; one brother; and
one sister.

Dale W. Grady, 79, of 1507 S. Wilson Ave., died Sunday (May

Dale W. Grady was born July 31, 1916, the son of Harry L. and
Minnie (White) Grady in Rockford. Dale attended School in rural
Rockford and lived at Rockford until he was 20 years old.
Dale came to Mason City in 1936 and married Renelda A. George
on July 3, 1936, in Mason City.
Dale worked for Jacob E. Decker & Sons Packing Plant until
he served during World War II in the U.S. Air Force.
Upon returning home from the service, he worked for Cadwell
Storage and then later owned and operated Grady Wallwashing and
Painting Business for 45 years, retiring earlier this year.
Dale was an avid stock car fan and raced cars of his own.
He also enjoyed caring for his yard.
Dale was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Renelda Grady of Mason City; two
sons, Martin Grady and wife, Faye, of Mason City, and Ted Grady
and wife, Marie, of Mason City; six grandchildren, Kathy Arnold
and Debbie Pumphrey, both of Mason City; Becky Baack of Clear
Lake; Martin Dean Grady of Dinuba, Calif.; Scott Grady of Cedar
Rapids, and Sara Curtis of Mason City; seven great-grandchildren,
Andrew, Candice, Benjamin, Derek, Cristian, Samuel and Sonya;
one sister, Lura Havey and husband, Dick, of Nora Springs; several

Earl is survived by his wife, Lillian; one daughter, Linda,

Fredona E. Hindman, 83, of Rogers, Ark., formerly of Meservey,
passed away Sunday (May 12, 1996) at the Sterling House, Leawood,
Kan.

Fredona was born Jan. 16, 1913, in Meservey, the daughter of
Fred and Joy Avery Lemke.
She attended school in Meservey and graduated from Meservey
High School. She then attended Iowa State and Iowa State Teachers
College.
On Sept. 23, 1933, she was united in marriage to Marvin C. Hindman
in Clear Lake.
The couple made their home in Meservey. In 1965, they left Meservey
and moved to Cowgill, Mo., where they farmed and she taught Head
Start. They retired in 1976 and moved to Rogers, Ark.
In June of 1991, Marvin passed away.
Fredona was a member of the Central Methodist Church, Rogers,
Ark., and the Rogers Noon Lions Club.
Fredona is survived by her two sons, Larrie and his wife, Jeannie,
of Leawood, Kan., and David and his wife, Polly, of Maysville,
Mo.; two grandsons, Bryant and his wife, Rhonda, of Dallas, Texas,
and Derek and his wife, Liz, of Orlando, Fla.; and one great-grandson,
Nicholas.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Marvin.

Free Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Larry Yeoman and the Rev.
Dave VanWingerden officiating.
Interment will be 12:30 p.m. Friday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery,
Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and one hour prior
to services on Friday at the church.
The family suggests memorials be given to the Theresa Highsmith
Vooge Memorial Fund.
Theresa was born Oct. 25, 1905, in Winnebago County, the daughter
of Ole and Signe (Rollefson) Hanson.
She married Roy Highsmith on Dec. 25, 1930.
They farmed in the Clear Lake area until their retirement and
moved to Clear Lake in 1967.
Theresa worked at Deckers from 1948-1968.
Ray preceded her in death in September of 1976.
She married George Vooge in August of 1977 and he preceded her
in death in June of 1979.
Theresa enjoyed cooking for her family and friends.
She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake,
and was active in Women's Missionary Society.
Theresa is survived by a son, Robert Highsmith and his wife,
Doris, of Des Moines; two daughters, Avi Ubben and her husband,
Robert, of Sheffield, and Shirley Hulsing and her husband, Myron,
of Rockwell; two stepdaughters, Iris Alitz and her husband, Harley,
of Mason City, and Janice King of Portland, Ore.; eight grandchildren,
Greg Highsmith, David Highsmith, Amy Natzke, Jim Ubben, Steve
Ubben, Mary Lynn Moore, Julie Koenigsberg and Diane Jones; 11
great-grandchildren; and one sister, Alpha Thompson of Forest
City.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, one son, one
stepson, one sister and three brothers.

Nellie Emhoff Gioffredi was born on Feb. 19, 1907, in Modena,
Mo,. to Jennie Loe and Nathan Vaughn.
She attended school in Mill Grove, Mo.
She was united in marriage to C.F. Emhoff on Nov. 23, 1925,
and they became the parents of five children.
On Sept. 21, 1957, she was united in marriage to C.A. Gioffredi
in Des Moines.
They lived in Ankeny for several years and she was employed
by the Commission for the Blind in Des Moines.
They then moved to California and in 1980 moved to Dumont.
She was in the Allison Care Center and in February of 1995,
she moved to the Dumont Care Center.
Nellie loved collecting dolls, sun catchers and playing bingo.
She was very interested in politics and would engage anyone
in avid discussion.
She is survived by four children, LaVaughn Uhlenhopp of Aredale;
Donna Mehlberg of LaMirada, Calif.; C.F. ``Sonny'' Emhoff of
Mason City, and Marietta Brocka of Aredale. Her other daughter,
Delores Norris, died on March 1, 1996. Also surviving are 11
grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild;
and one brother, W.L. Vaughn of Trenton, Mo.
