Edwin Ray Shahan

BELMOND 

Edwin Ray Shahan, 74, of Belmond, passed away Monday (June 3,

1996) at the Belmond Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral

Home with the Rev. Laurence Garrett officiating.  Burial will

be in Amsterdam Cemetery, Goodell.

Visitation was held from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Ewing

Funeral Home.

Edwin was born on July 16, 1921, in Hickory Grove, the son of

Lee and Mary Carter Shahan.  He attended country schools.  Edwin

farmed near Hickory Grove for many years.  On June 5, 1949, he

was united in marriage with Gladys I. Mikesh.  He then farmed

on an acreage at the Old Mill Dam south of Rowan, and worked

for A.R. Dorr and Sons Construction for 30 years.

Edwin's treasured moments were when he worked at his work bench,

building or repairing things.  He also took delight in gardening,

flowers and vegetables.  He enjoyed analyzing the weather and

was good at predicting it.  Edwin loved watching a beautiful

sunrise and sunset.  He always knew what the weather would be

like based on this and seeing changes in the animals he watched,

squirrels and birds.  Edwin built houses and feeders for these

little friends.

Edwin is survived by his wife, Gladys; his children, Charles

Krivachek and his wife, Lois, of Fort Dodge; Ronald Shahan and

his wife, Linda, of Cedar Falls; Kathlyn M. Shahan of Honolulu,

Hawaii; Edwin Shahan Jr. and his wife, Martha, of Clear Lake;

14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stanley

Shahan and his wife, Edith, of Ames, and Orville Shahan and his

wife, Mikey, of Mesa, Ariz.; one sister, Ada Hughes of Clear

Lake; two brothers-in-law, Charles Mikesh and his wife, Wanda,

of Belmond, and George Mikesh and his wife, Emily, of Goodell;

six sisters-in-law, Colina Haan and her husband, Bob, of Miller;

Grace Zaspel of Goodell; Ruby Dwyer of Harper's Ferry; Connie

Roley of Annadale, Minn.; Ardith Shahan and Dorothy Shahan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Howard

and Carol; an infant brother, Harry; and one sister, Lola Pals.

Omar A. Toye, 69, of Osage, died Tuesday (June 4, 1996) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with military rites

by Osage American Legion Post #278.

Visitation will be at 2:30 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral

Omar A. Toye was born July 2, 1926, on a farm near Carpenter,

the son of Prosper and Selma (Devriendt) Toye.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Toye, of Osage; a daughter,

Deanna Heavey, of Boston, Mass.; three sons, Tom Toye of Las

Vegas, Nev.; Daniel Toye of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Tony Toye

of Gays Mills, Wis.; two sisters, Angeline Sheka of Grafton,

and Mary Hohmquist of Big Stone, S.D.; one stepsister, Bernice

Liggett, of Moline, Ill.; one brother, Adolph Toye, of Moline, Ill.;

and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

LAKE MILLS 

Glenn R. Fjelstad, 72, of Lake Mills, died Tuesday (June 4,

1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Salem Lutheran

Church with the Rev. Roger Dykstra and the Rev. Sara Beth Akre

officiating.  Burial will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Mittelstadt

Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at

the church on Friday.

Glenn Richard Fjelstad was born May 3, 1924, in Winnebago County.

Survivors include his wife, Glenavonne ``Glennie'' of Lake Mills;

two daughters, Susan Fjone of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Cindy Jorth

of Joice; one son, Richard Fjelstad of Napa, Calif.; four grandchildren;

and two sisters, Judith Nessa and Beverly Rodberg, both of Lake Mills.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one

sister.

Henry W. Hartman, 93, of 507 First St., Grafton, died Wednesday

(June 5, 1996) at Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Lutheran

Church, 310 Fourth Ave., Grafton, with the Rev. Gregory Bjornstad

officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bride Colonial Chapel,

110 Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to the services

at the church.

Henry W. Hartman was born July 18, 1902, in Cumberland, the

son of Edward G. and Mary (Roberts) Hartman.  He married Helen

Tietz on Aug. 19, 1942, in Manly.

Henry grew up in the Cumberland area where he attended country

schools.  He farmed there until 1942 when he moved near Grafton.

He and his family farmed there until 1970 when he retired and

moved into Grafton.  He enjoyed fishing and baseball and he continued

to have an interest in farming and agriculture.

Henry was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, a former member

of Worth County ASCS board and the Farm Bureau, and he served

on the Grafton School Board and City Council.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Hartman, Grafton; one son,

Darrell Hartman and his wife, Renee, Grafton; one daughter, Diann

Howell and her husband, Guy, Bloomington, Minn.; three grandchildren,

Michelle Varner and her husband, Jeremy, Northwood; and Kerri

and Kristine Hartwell, both of Grafton; one brother, Louis Hartman,

Atlantic; one sister, LaVerne Steinbeck, Griswold; and many nieces

and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Edward;

and three sisters, Minnie, Linda and Gertie.

service at 7 p.m., a Scripture reading at 7:30 p.m. and a parish

rosary at 8 p.m., all at the funeral home  There will be a family

prayer service at 10 a.m. Friday.

Evelyn M. Kunkel was born Sept. 5, 1921, on a farm near Wesley,

the son of Jacob and Clara (Steffen) Hanig.

She is survived by her husband, George B. Kunkel of Algona;

two daughters, Barbara Ann Knoll of Mason City and Jalene Kunkel

at home; one son, Dave Kunkel, of Titonka; and one sister, Levon

Althouse, of Horse Shoe Bend, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter

and two sisters.

United Methodist Church,  with the Rev. Kenneth Suetterlin officiating.

Burial will be in Crystal Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ewing Funeral

Chapel, Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church.

William Leerar was born July 7, 1908, in Britt.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathryn Crotty of Wauwatosa,

Wis.; three sons, Raymond Leerar of Alsip, Ill.; Marvin Leerar

of Clifton, Va., and Roger Leerar of Britt; two sisters, Esther

Monson of Mason City and Caroline Slagle of Missoula, Mont.;

two brothers, Jake Leerar and Fred Leerar, both of Kanawha; 10

grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers

and two sisters.

Marie Olsen, 95, of Clear Lake, a resident of IOOF Home, Mason

City, died Monday (June 3, 1996) at the IOOF Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Jana

Swenson officiating.  Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be at 4:30 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial

Chapel and one hour prior to services on Friday.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.

Mrs. Olsen was born July 17, 1900, at Stovring, Yulland, Denmark,

the daughter of Christian and Ane (Wittrup) Sorenson, and received

her education there.  At the age of 17, she accompanied her brother's

family to the United States and made her home with them until

finding work in Mason City.

On June 21, 1922, she married Chris Olsen in Mason City and

they made their home in Clear Lake.  She was very proud to become

a naturalized citizen of the United States on Aug. 22, 1946.

Due to ill health, she entered the IOOF Home in Mason City in

October 1986.

Survivors include her three daughters, Irene Hansen of Whitefish,

Mont.; Lois Ann (Lindy) Hansen, of Clear Lake, and Mrs. Keith

(Janice) Bowman, of Des Moines; eight grandchildren; and seven

great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers,

a sister and one granddaughter.

at her home.

Patti Renae Banwart was born July 4, 1961, at Mankato, Minn.,

the daughter of Franklin and Darlene (Hotek) Banwart.

She graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1979 and attended

Mankato State University for two years.  She was a waitress at

Shooters Bar & Lounge in Tucson.

She is survived by a son, Tanner; her parents, Frank and Darlene

Banwart, of Lake Mills, Iowa; a brother, Brian and his wife,

Debra Banwart, of Findlay, Ohio; a sister, Lisa Arneson of North

Liberty, Iowa; a brother, Tom and his wife, Vickie Banwart, of

Joice, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.

at the United Hospital, Blue Earth, Minn.

First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Willis Nicholson officiating.

Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Winter

Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, and will continue one hour prior

to services at the church on Saturday.

Armena Milda Haas was born Jan. 8, 1917, in Kossuth County.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer, of Lakota; two sons, Eldon

of Elmore, Minn., and Arden of Lakota; five grandchildren; three

great-grandsons; one sister, Gertie Meyer of Lakota; and one

brother, Ray Sleper of California, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, three sisters

and one brother.

Iva Mae Puffer

JEFFERSON 

Iva Mae Puffer, 77, of Jefferson, and formerly of the Merservey-Thornton

areas, died Saturday (June 1, 1996) at the Greene County Medical

Center.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, at

the First Baptist Church in Jefferson.  Burial was in the Jefferson

Cemetery.  Floyd Brown Post #11 of the American Legion in Jefferson

conducted graveside military rites.

Iva Mae Puffer was born June 10, 1918, on a farm near Thornton.

She was the daughter of Carl Frederick William Paul and Catherine

Wickersiem Paul.

Iva Mae graduated from Meservey-Thornton High School in 1936.


She received her teaching certificate from West Mar College

and taught in country schools for several years.

On July 24, 1943, Iva Mae became a W.A.V.E. in the United States

Navy and was stationed in Washington, D.C., specializing in secret

communications.  She was honorably discharged on Dec. 11, 1945.

On Aug. 15, 1946, Iva Mae was united in marriage to Paul Puffer

in Meservey.  The couple lived in several places in Iowa and

Minnesota before settling in Jefferson in 1969.  Here, Iva Mae

taught first grade until her retirement in 1984.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Jefferson and taught

Bible study and Sunday school.  She was a member of Delta Kappa

Gamma and the Retired Teachers Association.

Iva Mae cherished her time spent with her family, especially

her grandson, Jacob Paul.

Survivors include her two daughters, Candace Puffer of Sterling,

Va., and Carol (Mrs. Mark) Mandzaira of Urbandale; a grandson,

Jacob Paul Mandzaira; one brother, Loral Paul of Dubuque; and

an adopted brother, Royal Paul.

Services were arranged by Slininger-Rossow Funeral Homes Inc.

of Jefferson and Grand Junction.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the

Jefferson Public Library.

Jason Jerome Parker, 15, of 824 Fifth St. S.W., died Tuesday

(June 4, 1996) following a motor vehicle accident.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the

and New Hampshire Avenue.  Officiating will be Elder James Jones

from New Life, and the Rev. Walter Jones of St. John's Baptist

Church.

Jason was born Feb. 1, 1981, in Mason City, the son of Jesse

I. Parker and LuAnn Lechnir.  He attended ninth grade at Mason

City High School.  He enjoyed fishing, basketball, baseball and

football, as well as listening to music.

Jason is survived by his mother, LuAnn Lechnir, and his father,

Jesse I. Parker, both of Mason City; his paternal grandmother,

Virgie Parker of Mason City; his maternal grandparents, LaVerne

Anderson and LaRaye Anderson, both of Albert Lea, Minn.;  his

maternal great-grandmother, Merle Anderson of Hayward, Minn.;

one sister, Cameo Parker; four brothers, Tavar J. Parker, Jordan

Parker, Isaiah Parker, all of Mason City, and Christopher Jandebeur

of Clear Lake; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jesse;

and one brother, David Michael Lechnir.

1996) at Franklin General Hospital.

be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel

Funeral Home.

Clarence Fredericks was born June 5, 1911, in Franklin County.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Fredericks of Hampton; and

one brother, Russell Fredericks of Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and one

brother.

Lewie Lewerke, 90, of 620 Briarstone Drive, died Wednesday (June

Acres Christian Reformed Church, 340 20th St. S.W., with the

Rev. Jack Van Den Heuvel officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial

Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer

Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and will continue one hour

prior to services at the church on Monday.  The family will be

at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday to greet friends.

Lewie was born July 10, 1905, at Staatscanal, Holland, a son

of Pete and Ella Lewerke.  He came to the United States in 1920,

arriving at Ellis Island.  He eventually settled at Parkersburg.

He farmed at Crystal Lake for 32 years, semi-retiring at age

62.  He later worked for Elzo and Pete Lewerke.  In 1967 Lewie

and Jennie moved to rural Mason City.

He especially enjoyed his family and fishing trips to Minnesota.

He still holds the family walleye fishing record.

Lewie was a member of the Christian Reformed Church at Woden

and Mason City for 39 years.

He is survived by his wife, Jennie Lewerke of Mason City; two

daughters, Ella Frenz and her husband, Robert, and Zelda Elwood

and her husband, Larry, all of Mason City; two sons, Dick Lewerke

and his wife, Bonnie, and Al Lewerke and his wife, Barb, all

of Mason City; 11 grandchildren, Cindy, Bobby, Penny, Kim, Brian,

Sherry, Brad, Christine, Toma, Troy and Trevor; three great-grandchildren,

Brooke, Brianna and Taylor; and two sisters, Stentje Van Meekeren

and Johanna Van Wyngeeren, both of Hollandale, Minn.

He was greeted in Heaven by his parents; 10 brothers and sisters;

and many friends and relatives.

Verna May Dobbertin

CLARKS GROVE, Minn. 

Memorial services for Verna May Dobbertin, 69, of Clarks Grove,

will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral

Chapel, Albert Lea.  Lt. Dan Wilson will officiate.  Interment

will be in Graceland Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.  Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home,

Albert Lea, is in charge of arrangements.

Verna May died Wednesday (June 5, 1996).

Verna May was born Dec. 10, 1926, in Bottineau, N.D.  Her parents

were Orrin and Martha (Maertens) Thompson.  Verna May grew up

in rural St. Ansgar, Iowa.  She graduated from Northwood, Iowa,

High School in 1944.  She attended college and taught elementary

school in Iowa as a young woman.  On July 13, 1945, she was united

in marriage to Myron E. Dobbertin in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  Following

the death of her daughter, Dawn, Verna May cared for her grandchildren,

Jeremie and Philip for the seven years she lived in Clarks Grove.

Verna May was a member of the Salvation Army, the Friendly Handicaps

and the Home League.  She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crafts,

especially making rugs, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Penny O'Daffer of Albert Lea;

one son, Craig and his wife, Paula Dobbertin of St. Cloud; grandchildren,

Jennifer Dobbertin, Kelly Dobbertin, Brandon Dobbertin, Annette

(O'Daffer) and her husband, Chris Hansen, Brian O'Daffer, Jeremie

Becker and Philip Becker; stepgrandson, Eric Sickenger; sisters,

Helen and her husband, Lynn Turbett of Mason City, Iowa; Nancy

and her husband, Bill Young of Garner, Iowa; Sharon DeMaris of

Mason City, Iowa; and Mavis Fitzgerald of Mason City, Iowa; one

brother, Henry O. Thompson and his wife, Joyce, of Doylestown,

Joanne was born Aug. 2, 1929, in Mason City, the daughter of

Albert F. and Annie (Lewis) Bower.  She graduated from Mason

City High School in 1947.  She was united in marriage to Paul

Francis on May 16, 1948, at St. John's, where she was baptized,

confirmed and has been a life-long member.  She also lived all

of her life as a resident in Mason City, except from 1949 to

1952 when she and Paul lived in Columbus, Ohio, where she worked

for the Central Ohio Paper Company.  After returning to Mason

City she was employed as a seamstress at Younkers and VanDynes.

The last five years she worked for the north end Caseys doing

many of the duties required to run the store.  She is a member

of St. John's Episcopal Church and was a past co-director of

the altar guild.  She also enjoyed ceramics, crossword puzzles,

raising her cats and bingo.  She was a former member of the Eagles

Auxiliary.

Joanne is survived by her husband, Paul, of Mason City; two

daughters, Mrs. Mark (Paula Jo) Garth of Aiken, S.C., and Christine

Kay Francis of Simsbury, Conn.; one son, Garth David Francis

of Miami, Fla.; three sisters, Doris Marson and Stella Parks,

both of Mason City, and Mrs. Harold (Genevieve) Johnson of Britt;

and two grandchildren, Paul and Katie Garth.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Francis

Albert Bower; and one sister, Elsie Petersen.

Clyde H. Ohl, 74, of 124 12th Ave. N.E., Oelwein, died Wednesday

morning (June 5, 1996) at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo,

after a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Christ

United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Kerr officiating.

Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Hazelton, with military

graveside rites by the American Legion Ross Reid Post #9, Oelwein.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Jamison-Schmitz

Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at

the church on Saturday.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.

Clyde Harold Ohl was born Dec. 20, 1921, at Arlington, the son

of Bert Ohl and Blanche (Mahanna) Ohl.  He married Essie (Krueger)

Ohl on Nov. 12, 1944, at Oelwein.  He was a lifetime Oelwein

resident.  He worked at John Deere and Company in Waterloo as

a trucker in the foundry, retiring on Oct. 31, 1985.  He was

a member of Christ United Presbyterian Church, Oelwein; the American

Legion Ross Reid Post #9, Oelwein; and was a veteran of World

War II, serving in the Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Essie Ohl of Oelwein; four sons,

Jack and his wife, Mary Ohl, of Oelwein; C.H. ``Ozzie'' Ohl of

Mason City, Jerry Ohl of Moline, Ill., and Jeff Ohl of Oelwein;

nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five sisters,

Daisy Strempke, Isabelle McMillan, Ada Fleming, Laura Bates and

Donna Fish, all of Oelwein; and four brothers, LeRoy Ohl, Walter

Ohl and Leslie Ohl, all of Oelwein, and Robert Ohl of Independence.

Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Phillip

Winifred Margene Harlson was born June 30, 1928, at Forest City,

the daughter of Carl L. and Emily W. (Schutz) Harlson.

She attended school at Forest City and was a graduate of Forest

City High School.  She received a B.S. degree from the College

of St. Catherine, St. Paul, Minn.

Winnie retired from nursing after 33 years of care giving.

During retirement, she volunteered at KCMR radio for over 12

years, and she also volunteered at Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank.

She enjoyed gardening, especially growing flowers.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Ann's circle

at church, Beta Sigma Phi and Women's Club.

Winnie is survived by her sister, Dorothy Stampfel and her husband,

B. John, of Red Lodge, Mont.; five nieces and nephews, John Carl

Stampfel and his wife, Katherine; James Edward Stampfel and his

wife, Andrea; Loretta Berg and her husband, Kyle; Kate Steele

and her husband, Scott, and Emily Stampfel; five grand nieces

and nephews, Annika Stampfel, John Reagan Stampfel, Colton Stampfel,

Kaitlyn Berg and Wyatt Berg.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Henry W. Hartman was born July 18, 1902, in Cumberland, the

son of Edward G. and Mary (Roberts) Hartman.  He married Helen

Tietz on Aug. 19, 1942, in Manly.

Henry grew up in the Cumberland area where he attended country

schools.  He then farmed there until 1942 when he and his family

moved to their farm near Grafton.  In 1970, he retired and moved

into Grafton.  He enjoyed fishing, baseball, playing cards and

he continued to have an interest in farming and agriculture.

Henry was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, a former member

of the Worth County ASCS board, the Farm Bureau and he served

on the Grafton School Board and City Council.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Hartman of Grafton; one son,

Darrell Hartman and his wife, Renee, of Grafton; one daughter,

Diann Howell and her husband, Guy, of Bloomington, Minn.; three

grandchildren, Michelle Varner and her husband, Jeremy, of Northwood;

and Kerri and Kristine Hartman, both of Grafton; one great-grandson,

Derek Varner of Northwood; one brother, Louis Hartman of Atlantic;

Fritz D. Paullus, 84, of Latimer, died Friday (June 7, 1996)

Fritz was born Sept. 28, 1911, on a farm north of Latimer.

His parents were Fred A. and Emma (Fahrmann) Paullus.

He grew to manhood and received his education at Latimer.

He was united in marriage to Fern D. Dohrmann on June 27, 1935,

at Iowa Falls.  To this union three children were born.

He was a dairy farmer at Latimer for many years and retired

in 1968.

He was baptized, confirmed and a life member of St. Paul's Lutheran

Church.  He had been a 4-H leader, a member of Franklin County

Farm Bureau, a past president of the Conservation Club and the

Latimer Golf Club.

In past years he had played baseball and umpired.  He was an

avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed raising horses and attending

horse shows.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Fern; daughter,

Sherrill Hansen and her husband, Glenn, of Cedar Falls; two sons,

Sherwood and his wife, Sharon, of New Braunfels, Texas, and Fred

Jerome and his wife, Nadine, of Mason City; five grandchildren,

Jeff Paullus, Scott Hansen, Brent Paullus, Cara Hansen Ludemann

and Molly Ann Paullus; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Paullus,

Ashley Ludemann, and Kristin Paullus; and three sisters, Laurena

Miriam (Alstott) Samsel, 84, of Gaslite Apartments, Clear Lake,

died Thursday (June 6, 1996) at the Americana Healthcare Center,

Mason City.

Miriam Samsel, first daughter of five children, was born Aug.

31, 1911, to Verl and Kathryn (Miller) Alstott at Burnside.

She graduated from Ware Consolidated School in 1930 and received

her B.S. degree in education from Buena Vista in 1966.  Her teaching

career started in 1931 in a one-room school house in the Laurens

vicinity.  After several teaching positions in various communities,

Miriam retired from the profession in 1977, after teaching first

grade for 23 years in the Laurens Community School.  One of her

many joys was helping a young child discover the thrill of reading.

In 1978, she and her husband, Jim, moved to Okoboji where they

resided for 11 years.  In 1989 Miriam and Jim moved to the Mason

City-Clear Lake area.  Miriam had resided at the Americana Healthcare

Center since August 1995.

Miriam was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star,

belonged to PEO, Delta Kappa Gamma, Wa Tan-Ye, Iowa State Education

Association, National Education Association and was a charter

member of the Friendly Friday Club in Laurens.  In 1992, Miriam

and Jim were named North Iowa Medical Center's Volunteers of

the Year.

Miriam will be missed, but has given family and friends many

happy memories of her courage, determination and dedication.

Survivors include her husband, James O. Samsel, of Clear Lake;

two daughters, Keren Roewe of Livermore, Calif., and Coni Samsel

of Mason City; two granddaughters, Jerris Smith Hunsinger and

husband, Eric, of Aurora, Colo., and Sydney Smith of Overland

Edgar Toinby was born Nov. 21, 1905, in Mason City, the son

of Edgar F. and Katherine (McMenimen) Toinby.  He attended school

in Mason City and worked at the Mason City Brick Yard.

On Sept. 12, 1940, he was united in marriage to Janet L. Olson

in Mason City.  The couple moved to Clear Lake and resided there

until Edgar's retirement.  They then moved to Texas for a period

of five years, followed by Arkansas for nine years.  They returned

to Clear Lake in 1985.

Edgar was employed as a custodian at Clear Lake Schools from

1955-70.  He retired from the position in 1970.

His hobbies included fishing, camping and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Janet, of Clear Lake; and one niece,

Cynithia Leland of Seattle, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John

Toinby.

Marlys Van Horn, 79, died Friday (June 7, 1996) at the I.O.O.F.

Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the United

Methodist Church, 508 Second Avenue N., Clear Lake, with the

Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.  A graveside service will be held

at 4 p.m. Monday at the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke

Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth Street, Clear Lake.  A Rebekah

service will be held at 7 p.m. today.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Marlys Van Horn

Memorial Fund.

Marlys was born Sept. 18, 1916, in Dumont, the daughter of Raymond

and Edna (Stafford) Boots.  She graduated from Dumont High School

in 1936.

On Nov. 26, 1938, she was united in marriage with Louis Van

Horn in Spring Valley, Minn.  Marlys farmed with her husband

in the Sheffield area until 1960.  He preceded her in death on

Oct. 5, 1969.

Marlys worked at the Woolworth store in Mason City before coming

to Clear Lake in 1963 and being employed as manager of the Ben

Franklin Store.  In 1969, she started her own store, the Clear

Lake Variety Store,  which she owned and operated seven days

a week with very little help until she became ill last month.

She was a member of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce

for 30 years, where she served as a member of the Chamber Board

and chairman of the Welcoming Committee.  In 1979 she was the

Chamber's Captain of Fleet.  She received an award for ``Dedication

of Service'' in 1991 from the Chamber of Commerce.

Marlys joined the Rebekah Lodge in Dumont in 1959 and transferred

her membership to the Clear Lake Tina Rebekah Lodge June 23,

1970.  She held a variety of offices within the organization.

In July 1994 she received the ``Decoration of Chivalry,'' the

highest honor in the Rebekah Lodge.

She was a 30-year member of the Wa Tan Ye Club, holding various

offices.  She was presented with the Woman's Achievement Award

from that organization Sept. 29, 1981.  Since 1988 she was also

a member of the Clear Lake Loiness Club and held offices within

that organization.

In July 1981 Marlys was honored as grand marshal of Clear Lake's

Fourth of July parade.

In 1990, she received the ``Citizen of the Year''  award, the

first such award sponsored by the Clear Lake Rotary Club.

She was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Lou Rogers, and her husband,

Jim, of West Union; two grandchildren, Luanne Lansing and her

husband, Randy, of East Dubuque, Ill., and Douglas Rogers of

Mercy Health Center West.

Rev. Richard Scheerer officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St.

Joseph Cemetery.

Velma B. Abbott was born Oct. 25, 1904, in Ogden, a daughter

of Ralph and Sylvia (Rose) Morgan.  Velma attended school in

Odgen, moved to Mason City at age 19 and then attended Hamilton

Business College.

She married Cecil W. Abbott on Oct. 14, 1930, at Fulton, Mo.

Velma was a bookkeeper for United Dairy, now Allied Purchasing,

for 16 years, retiring in October of 1969.  She was a member

of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and enjoyed

bowling and bridge.

Survivors include her daughter, Joan Tickal, and husband, Donald,

of Mason City; nine grandchildren, Jody Adams and husband, Mike,

of Mason City, Lori Smith of Mason City, Michael Smith and wife,

Meredith, of Phoenix, Ariz., Timothy Tickal of Mason City, Rhonda

Mohl and husband, Greg, of Clinton, Key Lynch and husband, Paul,

of Audubon, Robert Abbott of Dublin, Ohio, Wesley Abbott and

wife, Denise, of Atlanta, Ga., and James Tickal of Minneapolis;

eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Kinney of Boone; a

sister-in-law, Arlene Abbott of Maquoketa; and a niece, Dorothy

Ann Miller of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Cecil,

David was born June 21, 1951, in Mason City to Samuel H. and

Orean (Anderson) Davison.  He attended Mason City schools and

lettered in wrestling. He graduated form Mason City High School

in 1969.  David enjoyed sports and spending time with his children

and grandchildren and his family and friends.  He worked at North

West States Portland Cement Company, the Sheffield Brick and

Tile Company and Easter's Super Value, was a school custodian

in California and for the past two and a half years he was the

owner and operator of Dave's North Star Lounge in Mason City.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his children, Darcy, Danielle and Brenda;

grandchildren, Johnny, Taylor and Brooke; his mother, Orean Davison

of Mason City; a brother, Scott, and wife, Pat, of Mason City;

a sister, Dorene, and husband, William Weiland, of Golden, Colo.;

a brother, Danny, and wife,  Lynne, of El Paso, Texas; a sister,

Barbara, and husband, Dave Noel, of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister,

Donna Markwardt of Mason City; a brother, Bob, and wife, Mae,

of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a sister, Judy, and husband,  John

Wood, of Anaheim Hills, Calif.; a brother, Gary, of Mason City;

a sister, LaVonne Rushing of Albert Lea, Minn.; and many, many

nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel H. Davison, in

February 1995.

Evelyn was born on September 26, 1928 the only child of Gilbert

and Florence M.(Sutton) Kraft in Richmond, Ill.  She graduated

from school in Richmond and then worked at various jobs in the

Solon Mills area.  She was united in marriage to Howard Ritzert

on March 23, 1947 in Richmond where they made their home until

moving to Iowa in Jan. of 1971.  She was confirmed at Elk Creek

Lutheran Church, and enjoyed playing bingo, crocheting, and playing

Pinnacle, "500" and Uno card games.



Evelyn is survived by her family of five daughters and four

sons who include Lois Alton of Forest City; Lisa Ritzert of Washington;

Mrs. Harley Laura Frederick of Hartland, Minn; Mrs. Steven Lorraine

Hacker of Albert Lea, Minn.; Mrs. Bruce Lillian Kesler of Scarville;

Leslie Ritzert of Broadhead, Wis.; Leland and his wife Jane

of Kensett; Leonard and his wife Kathy of Manly; Larry and his

wife Becky of Lake Mills; 21 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.



She was proceeded in death by her husband in March of 1966,

her parents, two sons, Howard and Gary, one grandson, Casey Hacker

and one great grandson, Christopher Ritzer.
