Eke H. Agena, 90, of Dows, died Wednesday (May 29, 1996) at

the Clarion Community Memorial Hospital.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the First

Lutheran Church with the Rev. Glenn Kappelmann officiating. 

Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery.  Elledge Funeral Home

is in charge of arrangements.



Eke H. Agena was born Sept. 22, 1905, in Upende, Germany.



Survivors include two sisters, Elise Meier of Clear Lake, and

Marguerite Horn of Bloomington, Minn.; three sons, Ben of Nashville,

Ark., Ubbo of St. Charles, and Maynard of Dows; and eight grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers

Roderick L. ``Rod'' Burke, 50, of 4494 Taft Ave. S.E., Iowa

City, died Thursday (May 30, 1996) at University Hospitals.



Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. today at the Donohue-Lensing

Funeral Home.  There will be no public visitation.



Mr. Burke was born Nov. 3, 1945, in Hampton, the son of Don

and Voloy Botts Burke.  He married Lynn Findling on July 27,

1995, in Nashua.



He was a freelance artist, musician and author, and had served

in the U.S. Marines.  A graduate of North Iowa Area Community

College in Mason City, he had been honored by the NIACC Alumni

Association during its ``Pathways to Success'' recognition program.

He was attending the University of Iowa, studying philosophy,

ethics and art.



Survivors include his wife, Lynn Burke of Iowa City; one son,

Michael Burke of Wellington, Colo.; three daughters, Leah Burke

of LaMirada, Calif., Ellie Burke and Suzanne Burke, both of Nipomo,

Calif.; one grandchild, Taj; one brother, Bob Burke of Loveland,

Colo.; one half-brother, Don Gartin of Boring, Ore.; and many

aunts, uncles and cousins.



He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

John ``Jack'' F. Gaffney, 85, of Pleasant Valley Apartments,

died Wednesday (May 29, 1996) at the Rockwell Care Center.



A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Sacred Heart

Catholic Church, Rockwell, with Father Stephen Meyer officiating.

Visitation was held after 4 p.m. Thursday in the chapel at the

Sacred Heart Parish Center with a Scripture service  at 7:30

p.m.  Interment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery

with military rites conducted by the Gallagher Post of the American

Legion.



Fullerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Jack was born Sept. 7, 1910, in Rockwell, the son of John T.

and Jane (Treston) Gaffney.  He graduated from Sacred Heart School

and then served his country in the Army Engineers in the European

Theatre during World War II.  His passion for operating heavy

equipment continued during his working life with several construction

companies in Iowa and Nebraska.  Jack was an avid bowler in Algona

and enjoyed being a Cub baseball fan so much that he even installed

a satellite dish so he could watch them.  He was a member of

Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell, the Gallagher Post

of the American Legion and the VFW in Clear Lake.



Jack will be fondly remembered by his one daughter, Mrs. Tony

(Ann J.) Castro of Sebring, Fla.; two sons, John R. ``Dick''

and his wife, Lucille Gaffney of Swaledale, and Robert F. and

his wife, Frances Gaffney of Tularosa, N.M.; 11 grandchildren;

26 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.



Jack was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Hazel,

Mary, Elizabeth and Bridget; and three brothers, Phillip, Hubert

and Edward.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Church

of the Nazarene with the Rev. Mitchell Sanderson officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ewing

Funeral Chapel, and will continue one hour prior to services

at the church on Tuesday.



Beverly J. Kirschbaum was born July 8, 1938 in Britt.



Survivors include her mother, Grace Nelson of Britt; one daughter,

Deanna Manning of Urbandale; one son, Mark Kirschbaum of North

Beach, Minn.; one sister, Linda Nelson of Independence; and three

grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her father.

Eugene ``Buck'' Holzer, 73, died Saturday (June 1, 1996) at

the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.



Celebration of the funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday

at the Immaculate Conception Church, Charles City, with the Rev.

Stanley J. Heyek officiating.  Burial will be in the Calvary

Cemetery, Charles City.



Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral

Home, Charles City, where there will be a Rosary held at 3 p.m.

and a Parish Vigil Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m., followed by

the K.C. Rosary.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to

services at the church on Tuesday.



Eugene Holzer was born March 30, 1923 in Floyd County.



Survivors include his wife, Rena of Floyd; one son, Dean Holzer

of Charles City; one daughter, Diane Hartogh of Storm Lake; five

grandchildren; two brothers, Cletus ``Clete'' Holzer of Charles

City, and Melbert Holzer of New Hampton; one sister, Bernetta

``Toddy'' Zeien of Ionia.



He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.

Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.



Visitation will be held after 7 p.m. today at the Wilson Funeral

Home, and will continue at 9 a.m. Monday.



Leslie M. Erickson was born March 1, 1956 in Algona.



Survivors include his mother, Alice Erickson of Algona; and

his wife, Nancy of Algona.



He was preceded in death by his father.

Eke H. Agena, 90, of Dows, died Wednesday (May 29, 1996) at

Eke H. Agena was born Sept. 22, 1905 in Upende, Germany, the

daughter of Behrend and Rindelt (Doden) Wilts.  She attended

school in Germany and later worked as a governess.  She was united

in marriage on Feb. 3, 1937 to William H. Agena in Engerhafe,

Germany.  They immigrated to the United States in 1937 and settled

in Webster City and farmed for two years.  They later farmed

seven miles east of Dows for seven years, and in 1946 they moved

north of Dows and farmed until retiring in 1968 to their present

home in Dows.  She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Dows,

First Lutheran Church Women, and the Martha-Ruth Circle.



She enjoyed knitting and making quilts for Lutheran World Relief

and other church projects.  When her health limited outside activities

she continued to piece quilts for the church even until the day

of her death.  She enjoyed her vegetable and flower garden which

she shared with others.  She enjoyed her grandchildren who knew

her as ``Oma''.  She also enjoyed reading and music but most

of all she enjoyed her family and friends.  She kept in touch

with her many relatives in Germany and visited there several

times.  She also welcomed those who came to visit her in the

United States.



Survivors include two daughters, Elise Meier of Clear Lake,

and Marguerite Horn of Bloomington, Minn.; three sons, Ben of

Nashville, Ark., Ubbo of St. Charles, and Maynard of Dows; and

eight granddaughters, Cathy and her husband, Jim McDougle of

Shorewood, Minn., Cindy Meier of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.,

Jen and Deb Agena both of Denton, Texas, Kris Agena of Iowa City,

Liz Agena of Davenport, Gretchen Agena of Houston, Texas, and

Kate Agena of Forest City.  Three sisters-in-law, and many nieces,

nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews, all residing in Germany.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers

and sisters.

30, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.



Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Adas

Israel Synagoge, 620 N. Adams Ave., with the Rabbi Nahum Schulman

officiating.  Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.



There will be no visitation, the body will be cremated.  Major-Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.



In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Betterment

Fund at Adas Israel Synagogue, P.O. Box 676, Mason City, Iowa

50401.



Lena Chapman was born July 4, 1907 in Fort Dodge, the daughter

of Louis and Vera Gertner.  Lena graduated from Fort Dodge High

School in 1925.  At age 11, she enrolled at the Drake Conservatory

of Music in Des Moines studying for 10 years followed by her

graduation.  Lena married Norman Chapman in November of 1929

in Fort Dodge.  The Chapman's moved to Mason City in 1933.  In

1935 Lena was one of five who created the Women's Symphony Orchestra

of North Iowa, she played violin.



She helped create the largest loan closet in Cerro Gordo County,

which eventually became the largest in the United States.  The

loan closet provided medical equipment and supplies to those

in need.



Lena was chairperson for the American Cancer Society in Cerro

Gordo County for six years.  In 1957 she began her career in

the insurance field working for American Mutual of Des Moines,

and most recently for Lafayette Insurance Company.  Lena was

a life-member of the Haddasa Women's Organization and Adas Israel

Synagogue.



Survivors include one son, Justin G. Chapman of Mason City.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Norman

in 1962; two sisters; and three brothers.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Petersen

Lund Funeral Home.



Shirley Strand was born Oct. 3, 1929 in Forest City.



Survivors include her husband, Vernon Strand of Forest City;

one daughter, Louaine Jordahl of Forest City; two sons, Dan Strand

of Champaign, Ill., and Steve Strand of Forest City; seven grandchildren;

and five great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one

sister.

Eleanor F. Kornegor, 87, of 607 S. Kentucky Ave., died Saturday

(June 1, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Wayside

Chapel of First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave.,

with the Rev. Merlin Ackerson officiating.  Interment will be

in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.



Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major-Erickson Funeral

Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.  Visitation will continue one

hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.



The family suggests memorials to the Eleanor F. Kornegor Memorial

Fund.



Eleanor Kornegor was born Nov. 13, 1908, in Waterloo, the daughter

of Samuel and Elsie Wilson.  Eleanor was raised by her aunt and

uncle, John and Mary McHenry.  She graduated from Rockford High

School.



Eleanor married Herman Kornegor on April 6, 1932, in Charles

City.  Mr. Kornegor died in 1965, then Eleanor moved to Mason

City in 1968 to live with her daughter and family.  Eleanor was

a member of First United Methodist Church and a church circle.



Survivors include one daughter, Mary McEniry of Mason City;

grandchildren, Michael McEniry and his wife, Pamela Klukow, of

Mason City, Steven McEniry of Vancouver, Wash., and Linda Humburg

and her husband, Craig, of Clear Lake; and great-grandchildren,

Rachel and Kelsey McEniry and Derek and Luke Humburg.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman.

Foundation; recipient of the National Quality Award for over

14 years; life member of the Womens Leaders Round Table; graduate

of LUTC 1 and 11; and received other numerous awards and honors

for her many years in the life insurance business.



Survivors include one son, Justin G. Chapman of Mason City.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman,

in 1962; two sisters; and three brothers.

Marian Elizabeth Garrett

MASON CITY  



Marian Elizabeth Garrett, 79, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday

(June 1, 1996) at Hillcrest Health Care Center, Wayzata, Minn.

Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Robert Towner

officiating.  Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.



Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge

of arrangements.



Marian Elizabeth Garrett was born March 9, 1917, in Antigo,

Wis., the daughter of William Charles and Elida Christina (Hollander)

Kreie.  She married Kenneth Lester Garrett on Sept. 4, 1939,

in Winterset.



Marian graduated from Antigo High School in Antigo, Wis., and

from Theda Clarke School of Nursing in Neena, Wis., in 1938.

She and her family moved to Mason City from Colfax in 1965.

She worked as a nurse at Heritage Care Center and her husband

managed Easter Super Valu Food Store prior to his retirement.



In 1991 she moved to Minnesota to be near to her son.  She was

very proud of her family.  She was a member of St. John's Episcopal

Church.



Survivors include two sons, Ken Garrett and his wife, Kathy,

of Wilmington, N.C., and Dr. Craig Garrett and his wife, Dr.

Kendra Garrett, of Plymouth, Minn.; five grandchildren, Karen

Garrett Wiseman of Arlington, Va., Krissy Garrett of Raleigh,

N.C., Megan Garrett-Subeck of Evanston, Ill., and Evan and Laurel

Garrett, both of Plymouth, Minn.; and one sister, Mildred Janasak

of Antigo, Wis.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth,

in 1982; one brother, Edward Kreie; and two sisters, Blanche

Kreie in infancy and Ruth Kalfon.

Vada Loree (Fish) Kinder, 76, of 1226 N. Monroe Ave., died Friday

(May 31, 1996) at Unity Hospital, Fridley, Minn., following a

severe stroke.



Funeral services will be conducted at Fullerton Patterson James

Funeral Chapel at 10 a.m. Tuesday.  Officiating will be the Rev.

Herbert Shafer of Grace United Methodist Church.



Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery where she will

be laid to rest next to her husband of 45 years.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider

memorials to the Vada L. Kinder Memorial Fund.



Vada was born June 20, 1918, near Eagleville, Mo.,  where she

continued to live into her early adulthood.  She was the daughter

of John and Laura (German) Fish.  While living there she met

her future husband, Virgil G. Kinder, and on Sept. 25, 1937,

she was united in marriage with him during a double ceremony

with Vada's cousin, Elden German, and his wife, Dorothy Foreman,

in Missouri.



Following their marriage they farmed near Pawnee where her

daughter was born.  With the new family growing, they moved to

Iowa and continued farming in various counties until moving to

Mason City in 1948, where she and Virgil found employment.  After

45 years of happy marriage, Virgil died in 1982.  She was a fun-loving

happy person who delighted in other people and serving her love

from a bountiful table in her home.  Vada continued to live in

her home for as long as her health would permit and very recently

moved to Minneapolis to be near her daughter and family.



Vada was a devoted mother and grandmother to her daughter, Janice,

and her husband, Ron Barragan-Haaland of White Bear Lake, Minn.;

the father of her grandchildren, C.R. Barragan of Minneapolis;

her three grandchildren, Tony and Paul Barragan, and Mrs. Michael

(Michelle) Frost.  The joy of her life arrived with the birth

of each of her eight great-grandchildren.  She will also be sadly

missed by her husband's relatives, Harold and his wife, Wanda

Kinder, and four sisters-in-law, Catherine Kinder, Velma Young,

Cordia Rowlett and Amy Fish, as well as her several loving nieces

and nephews.



Vada was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers,

Floyd and Virgil Fish; and two sisters, Flossie Tull and Lola

Ogle.

Glenn Leroy Klein was born Sept. 24, 1954, in Bitburg, Germany.



Survivors include his parents, Raymond and Beverly Klein of

Hampton; three brothers, Brian Klein of Gladstone, Mo., Randy

Klein of Ralston, Neb., and Alan Klein of Stockbridge, Mich.;

and his grandmother, Dorothy Pringnitz of Garner.

Allen B. Crabb was born Feb. 5, 1937, in Mason City.



Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Crabb of Hampton; four sons,

Thor Crabb and Chad Crabb, both of Hampton, and Tad Crabb and

Kip Crabb, both of Minnesota; one daughter, Tanji Simon of Minnesota;

one stepdaughter, Donna Arias of California; one stepson, Tracy

Joseph G. Gallo, 86, of Augusta, formerly of Mason City, Iowa,

died Sunday (June 2, 1996) at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.



Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Dunsford

Chapel, Augusta, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta, with

Chaplain Mark Wirth officating.  Dunsford Funeral Home, Augusta,

is in charge of arrangements.



Joseph G. Gallo was born Sept. 19, 1909, in Albuquerque, N.M.,

to Abolonio and Maria Gallo.  On June 7, 1951, he married Ida

Marie Hayes.  He lived in Albuquerque, N.M., for 23 years, and

Mason City, Iowa, for 40 years where he was employed by Armour

Meat Packing Plant.  He had lived the last two years in Augusta.

He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Augusta.



Survivors include his wife, Ida Marie Gallo; one son, Mario

Gallo of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughters, Beatrice Negrette and

Mitch Cantu, both of Des Moines, Iowa; Maggie Graham of Mason

City, Iowa; Josephine Jimenez of Rochester, Minn., and Billie

Jean Paul of Augusta, Kan.; one brother, Edward Gallo of Ventura,

Calif.; one sister, Aurora Davila of Los Angeles, Calif.; 28

grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by two sons and two daughters.

2, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Methodist Church, Clear Lake, officiating.  There will also be

a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Opportunity Village.

Village in memory of Andrew Roberts.



Andrew J. Roberts was born April 23, 1936, in Mason City, the

son of Alfred H. and Zellah Bennett (Dean) Roberts.  Andrew lived

in Mason City and in Clear Lake at Opportunity Village for several

years.  He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason

City.



Survivors include several cousins, Dean O. Skovlin of Northridge,

Calif.; Elaine Ground of Kirkwood, Mo.; Donna Dean Day, St. Petersburg,

Fla.; Eleanor Dohrn of Princeton, N.J.; Clay Dean of Montgomery,

Ala.; Joseph Dean of Atlanta, Ga., and Shirley Kleckner of Minneapolis,

Minn.; and a close friend, Berniece Lunde of Mason City.

Helen was born Sept. 26, 1905, in Carlisle, the daughter of

Lawrence and Marie (Nelson) Prall.  Helen graduated from Mason

City High School in 1923.  She married Vince Deviney on Aug.

13, 1938, at New Ulm, Minn.  Helen was a comptometer operator

for Standard Oil Co., and was last employed as office manager

for the Amoco Bulk Plant in Mason City.  She retired in 1969.

 She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was active

in Girl Scouts, PTA, North Iowa Shrine Auxiliary, Golden Wedding

Jubilee and Senior Citizens.



Survivors include her husband, Vince Deviney of Mason City;

daughters, Dixie Sullivan and her husband, Jerry, of Fond du

Lac, Wis., and Diana Krieger and her husband, Denny, of Alexandria,

Va.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister,

Esther Boatwright of Osprey, Fla.



She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Rachel

Payne and Jessie Curtis; and four half-brothers.

Bonnie D. ``Shultzie'' Gabel, 61, of Portland,  formerly of

Northwood, Iowa, died May 31, 1996.

Bonnie was born in Northwood, Iowa, on Aug. 21, 1934.  She lived

in northern Iowa for most of her life, until moving to Portland

in October of 1986.  Bonnie was employed in the photofinishing

industry for 35 years.



She is survived by her husband, Gerald A. Gabel; daughter, Verlynn

Rowell of Seattle, Wash.; son, Vernon Gabel of Salem, Ore.; and

brother, Cecil ``Jim'' Shultz of Mason City, Iowa.

Earl P. Hanson was born April 26, 1918, the son of John and

Etta Mae (Pearce) Hanson in Mason City.  Earl attended Mason

City schools and worked for a short time at Jacob E. Decker and

Sons.  Earl married Marguerite H. Stangler on June 16, 1940,

at the First Congregational Church in Mason City.  Earl was employed

at Lehigh Portland Cement Company for 35 years as a quarry driller

for dynamite, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of First Congregational Church of Christ and l #106-

Cement and Gypsum Union.

Survivors include his wife, Marguerite H. Hanson of Mason City;

one daughter, Janice Shafer and her husband, Frank, of Mason

City; two sons, Richard D. Hanson and his wife, Cathy, of St.

Paul, Minn., and Robert E. Hanson of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren,

Donna Shafer, Tom Shafer, Lori Bublitz and Scott Shafer, and

Alissa and Lindsey Hanson; four great-grandchildren, Kaci, Nichole,

Cody and Kari; one brother, John Hanson and his wife, Mary Ellen,

of Mason City; mother-in-law, Harriett Stangler, Good Shepherd

Acres in Wall Lake at the age of 96.

services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Evergreen Cemetery

in Rudd.

William Fred Huse was born Jan. 11, 1900, in Adams County, Neb.,

to Richard and Ella (Mick) Huse.  He was baptized Nov. 19, 1913,

and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Dec. 18, 1918, in

Blue Hill, Neb.  On May 2, 1927, he was married to Martha Hoppen

at Red Cloud, Neb.  They lived on a farm near Ayr, Neb., and

moved to Rudd in 1939.

He collected antique gas engines and was a member of Cedar Valley

Engine Club for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, LaVona Bartlett and her husband,

George, of Wall Lake; two sisters-in-law, Gertrude Bandau of

Charles City, and Esther Huse of Blue Hill, Neb.; four grandchildren,

Pamela Hildebrand, Dean Huse, William Huse and Robert Huse; five

great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha; a son, Willard;

his parents; two sisters; and two brothers.

(June 4, 1996) at Oakwood Care Center.

Church, 302 Highway 18 West, with the Rev. Larry Squier officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and will continue

from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, and from 11:30

a.m. to time of services at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Christian Church in Clear Lake.

Mrs. Garrison was born Dec. 2, 1906, the daughter of Roy and

Edith (Chesley) Willcox.  She was united in marriage to Neil

R. Garrison on Jan. 11, 1924.  The couple lived in Duluth, Minn.,

for six years where three of their four daughters were born,

and then lived in Fargo, N.D., for two years, where their youngest

daughter was born.  The family moved to Mason City in 1933, where

they lived for 26 years, before moving to Clear Lake in 1959.

Mrs. Garrison was an active member of the Christian Church in

Clear Lake for 60 years.  She also did volunteer work at Handicap

Village and at the Oakwood Care Center.

She is survived by three daughters, Arleen Randall and her husband,

Ray, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; Levon Garrison of Terre Haute,

Ind., and Marna Whaley of Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Evelyn Hershey

and her husband, Rod, of Metarie, La.; one brother, Milton Willcox

and his wife, Maxine, of East Moline, Ill.; five grandchildren,

Paul G. Bruns, Tamara Bruns, Mark Whaley, Gary Whaley and Jana

Furton; four great-grandchildren, Ryan Whaley, Dane Whaley, Paul

R. Bruns, Robyn Davidson and her husband, Dave; one aunt, Pauline


Chesley of Mason City; several nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law,

Mrs. Vivian Koslowski of Hibbing, Minn., and Ruth Willcox of Illinois.

Mrs. Garrison was preceded in death by her parents, her husband,
