Heinz H. Rattay
MASON CITY
Heinz H. Rattay, 73, of Mason City, died Thursday (Feb. 22,
1996) at his home, after a long bout with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem
Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Frederick
J. Wood officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to
services at the church on Monday.
Memorials may be given to the Heinz H. Rattay Memorial Fund.
He was born May 9, 1922, in Lengau, East Prussia, Germany, the
son of Richard and Martha Stosno Rattay. He attended school in
Lengau and an agricultural college in Treuburg.
In 1941, during World War II, he enlisted in the German Air
Force and was trained as a radio operator. He flew on night raids
in Junkers-88. In 1942, while on a torpedo run, he was shot down
over the English Channel and taken prisoner of war.
The pilot, who had just barely survived the crash, was unable
to grasp the lifeline thrown from the ship to him. Hinting falsely
that the pilot might be an ``important German commander,'' Mr.
Rattay convinced the British captain to go back and rescue the
pilot, with whom, by the way, he shared the same rank sergeant.
Mr. Rattay was held first in Britain and then was sent to America
where he was held in POW camps in Maryland, New Mexico and California.
After picking many bushels of oranges in California, he was
finally allowed to return home in 1948, three years after the
war's end. He was unable to return to his homeplace, now under
Polish control. He stayed with relatives in Germany until he
secured work, first on a farm in England, and then in France.
In 1952, he was sponsored by Mr. Elmer A. Thrams of Emery, Iowa,
to work as a farmhand.
He left that position to work at the sugar beet plant in Mason
City, and later J.E. Decker and Sons meatpacking. He also began
purchasing rental property in Mason City. He taught himself English
and received his American citizenship in 1957.
On May 22, 1961, he married Cassandra Leigh Brown of Dougherty
at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in
Mason City.
He retired from the meatpacking plant (then Armour's) in 1975
after 22 years of service.
He contined to work maintaining his rental, and by that time,
agricultural property. He was always working, right up until
the last few weeks of his life. In his last two years, he roofed
and painted his three-story Victorian home, quite a feat for
a man in his early seventies.
He enjoyed nature, and took his children on several camping
and fishing trips. He also, in later years, loved to ice fish
on ``Big Blue.'' He believed in hard work, honesty and fairness,
which he meted out to all.
He enjoyed visiting with friends and strangers alike and if
he had a credo, it was ``you have to be happy with what you are
doing and where you are.''
He was a member of Bethelehm Lutheran Church, Mason City, and
in the early 1970s, the German-American Club.
He is survived by his wife, Cassandra, of Mason City; a daughter,
Susan (Mrs. Brad) Hicks of Hampton; two sons, Dr. Richard Rattay
of Prairie Village, Kan., and Thomas Rattay of Mason City; and
three grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Gunther Rattay
of Mason City; and five sisters, Erika Gilbert of Belgium, and
Ella Volkmann, Edith Strenge, Christa Rattay and Brigette Rattay,
all of Germany.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kurt; and
two sisters, Herte and Inge.
