Samuel A. Davis

ROSEBURG, ORE. 



Samuel Arthur Davis, 64, passed away Monday (Jan. 1, 1996) at

a hospital in Roseburg, Ore., of cancer.  Mr. Davis, formerly

of Mason City, was born July 10, 1931, to Harold A. and Claire

E. Davis in Mason City.



He attended Mason City schools before entering the U.S. Army,

and was released with an honorable discharge.



He married JoAnn Helen Reyerson on March 5, 1955, in Mason City.

He lived in Cedar Rapids before moving to Lapuente, Calif,.

around 1956.  He later moved his family to Roseburg, Ore., in

1968.



He worked various heavy construction jobs and was a member of

the Labor Union there.  His work included reconstruction of the

Winchester Dam, Umpqua Community College Gym, and the Nebo Construction

Site.  He eventually retired at the age of 55 due to his health.



His hobbies included C.B. radio, and he was known as ``Little

Bear.''  He also enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.



Mr. Davis is survived by a son, Lonnie, and his wife, Debra

Davis; a grandson, Garrett Allen Davis; a stepgrandson, two

step-granddaughters, and a stepgreat-grandchild, all from Salem,

Ore.; four sisters, Jane and her husband, Victor Mikkelson of

Pine, Ariz.; May and her husband, Max Bonds of Colville, Wash.;

Ruth A. and her husband, Donald Redeker of Mason City, and

Glinda and her husband, Jerry Buirge of Jacksonville, Fla.;

a special friend, Sandy Martin; and many nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Davis in May 1990

in Roseburg, Ore.; his parents, Harold A. and Claire Davis; an

infant brother, Ray; a sister, Rena Davis Hoggatt of Stockton,

Calif.; his maternal and paternal grandparents; and several nieces

and nephews.



Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wilson's Chapel

of the Roses Funeral Home, Roseburg, Ore.  Memorial services

were held at Roseburg V.A. Cemetery on Friday (Jan. 5, 1996).

Later, a private committal service was held at Eagle Point National

Cemetery, Eagle Point, Ore.

CORWITH 



Ernest L. Cramer, 90, of Corwith, died Friday (Feb. 9, 1996)

at the Kanawha Community Home.



Funeral services will be held  at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13,

at First Lutheran Church, Britt, with the Rev. James A. Mattson

officiating.  Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery,

Kanawha.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ewing Funeral

Chapel, Britt, and one hour prior to service time Tuesday at

the church.



Ernest Leo Cramer, the son of Henry and Sophie Minnie (Moldenhauer)

Cramer, was born April 17, 1905, at Duncan.  At the age of 1,

Ernie moved with his family to Ellendale, N.D., where he attended

country school.  At the age of 12, the family moved again, this

time to Battle Lake, Minn., where Ernie farmed with his father

until 1928.  He then moved to the LuVerne area where he worked

as a farmhand.  He continued in this occupation working on farms

in the Kanawha, Corwith and Wesley areas until Dec. 18, 1940,

when he married Laura Kirchgatter at the Lutheran Church in LuVerne.



Laura and Ernie began farming north of Britt and lived there

10 years before moving to the farm west of Kanawha where they

farmed until about 1970 at which time Ernie retired because of

failing health.  Ernie's beloved Laura passed away Feb. 22, 1976,

and Ernie's health problems persisted.  He entered the Kanawha

Community Home in September 1976, where he pursued an interest

in woodworking.



Ernie's sisters are Laura Jespersen and her husband, Bob, and

their children, of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; and Lucille Carson

and children, of Sacramento, Calif.



He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers,

Adolph and Louis.

MASON CITY 



Edward L. Meade, 74, of Mason City, formerly of Denver, Iowa,

died Friday morning (Feb. 9, 1996) of cancer at his home in Mason

City.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at

St. Peter Lutheran Church, Denver, with burial in the church

cemetery.  Graveside flag folding rites will be conducted by

Acker-Matthias Post 653.



Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Schumacher Funeral

Home, Denver, and one hour prior to service time Monday at the

church.



A memorial fund has been established in his name.



Edward L. Meade was born Dec. 2, 1921, in Center Junction, the

son of Louis J. and Amanda L. (Hunwardsen) Meade.  Ed lost his

mother as a baby and lived with his grandparents until he was

8 years old.  He then moved to Sumner with his dad when he remarried.

He graduated from Sumner High School in 1940.  He married Phyllis

Schuldt on Jan. 17, 1943, in Rochester, N.Y., and she died on

Sept. 15, 1988.  He then married Wanda M. Brown on Oct. 6, 1990,

in Mason City.



Ed served during World War II in the U.S. Navy from August 1942

to November 1945 as a storekeeper.  He moved to Denver in 1959

where he obtained a job at Waterloo Industries as a maintenance

supervisor.  He retired on July 1, 1984.



He was a 50-year member of Acker-Matthias American Legion Post

653 of Denver and served on the Denver City Countil from 1964-68.

He loved to golf, fish, hunt and did a great deal of visiting

with his grandchildren.



Survivors include his wife, Wanda, of Mason City; one son, Joel

Meade and wife, Marilyn, of LeMars; one daughter, Mary and husband,

Carl J. Schnakenberg, of Chicago, Ill.; one brother, Thomas Meade

of Saunderstown, R.I.; and five grandchildren, Kurt, Peter, and

Kate Schnakenberg, Thomas and Colin Meade.



He was preceded in death by two infant children, Mark and Margaret.

officiating.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Funeral Home, Riceville, with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scripture

service at 8 p.m.



Vincent Frederick Kesten was born March 7, 1913, in rural McIntire.



Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Kesten of Riceville; two

daughters, Sharon Campbell, Nora Springs, and Susan Christensen,

Leland; one son, Fred Kesten, Rockwell City; one sister, Lillian

Hale, LeRoy, Minn.; one brother, Gervace Kesten, Corona, Calif.;

11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two

brothers.

Alice A. Helm, 87, of 625 N. Jackson Ave., died Friday (Feb.

9, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.



Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at First United

Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Merlin Ackerson

officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to

service time Monday at the church.



Memorials may be given to the Alice A. Helm Memorial Fund.



Alice Helm was born Sept. 9, 1908, in Wabeno, Wis., the daughter

of Ferdinand and Clara (Giese) Priebe.  She graduated from Mason

City High School and then married Harold Helm on July 13, 1927,

at Rockford, Ill. She enjoyed cooking and, at one time, cooked

at the auctioneering college north of Mason City.  She also cooked

at the Community Kitchen.



Alice was an active member of First United Methodist Church,

Tuckabachee Circle, TAE Club, Eastern Star, Card Club and PTA.

She enjoyed cooking and gardening.



Alice was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother

who will be missed by all.



Survivors include three daughters, Betty Spina of Des Moines;

Mary Spina and husband, Larry, of Des Moines, and Linda Daly

and husband, Jay, of Cedar Rapids; four sons, Harold ``Bud''

Helm Jr. and wife, Sara, of Mason City; Robert Helm and wife,

Margaret, of Phoenix, Ariz.; Larry Helm and wife, Jean, of Orange

Park, Fla., and John Henry Helm of Mason City; one sister, Maxine

Johnson of Mason City;  18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Ann M. Bird, 86, of 780 S. Pierce Ave., formerly of Charles

City, died Saturday (Feb. 10, 1996) at Good Shepherd Nursing

Home.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fullerton

Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City.  The Rev. Frederick

J. Wood of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City, will officiate.

Burial will be in Sunyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral

home, where the family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m.; and

one hour prior to service time Tuesday at the funeral home.



Ann M. Bird was born July 28, 1909, in Watton, Mich.



Survivors include one daughter, Shielah Handt, Mason City; one

son, Stanley Bird, Oak Ridge, N.C.; and 12 grandchildren, 10

great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter,

three sisters and four brothers.

Jennie Harms was born Dec. 9, 1903, at Groothusen, Germany.



She is survived by one brother, Herman Harms Sr. of Titonka,

and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and six

brothers.

Charlotte ``Lottie'' Nelson, 88, of Algona, formerly of Fort

Dodge, died Sunday (Feb. 11, 1996) at North Care Center, Humboldt.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel

of Wilson Funeral Home, Algona, with the Rev. Douglas Hoag of

Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.  Burial of the ashes will

be in the LuVerne Cemetery at a later date.



Visitation will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday and continue Wednesday

morning at the funeral home.



Charlotte Nelson was born Jan. 9, 1908, in Griebo, Germany.



Survivors include three sisters, Rita Ziesman, Algona, Fern

Brown, Shelbina, Mo., and Lucille Pilgrim, Osage; and three brothers,

Glenton Zuetlau, San Leanero, Calif., Robert Zuetlau, Rockwell

City, and Daniel Zuetlau, Rolfe.



She weas preceded in death by her parents, two sons, two sisters

and three brothers.

Gerald Oscar Awe was born Dec. 30, 1917, at Alden.



Survivors include one daughter, Marcia Hermanson, Scarville;

three sons, Michael and Joseph Awe, both of Corwith, and John

Awe, Leland; one sister, Marilyn Johnson, Rogers, Ark.; two brothers,

Marion Awe of Michigan and Donald Awe, Rogers, Ark.; and 12

grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, two

sisters, four brothers and three grandchildren.

Alton H. Grap, 85, of Osage, died Sunday (Feb. 11, 1996) at

his home.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity

Lutheran Church with the Rev. Chris F. Gugel officiating.  Burial

will be in the Osage Cemetery with military rites conducted by

the American Legion Post 278 from Osage.



Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. today at Champion Funeral

Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church

on Wednesday.



Alton H. Grap was born July 31, 1910, in St. Ansgar.



Survivors include four daughters, Marcella Fenske of Las Vegas,

Nev.; Phyll Moss of Riceville; Lola Low of Osage, and Debbie

Starkey of Costa Mesa, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren;

and two great-great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, two granddaughters

and one great-grandson.

George B. Smith, 78, of 240th Street, Route 2, died Saturday

evening (Feb. 10, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient

Unit, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. James

Lutheran Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Rodney Holmberg officiating.

Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.



Visitation will be held at 4:30 p.m. today at Fullerton Patterson

James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.



George was born on April 15, 1917, in rural Clear Lake, the

son of William and LaCretia (Bradley) Smith.  He attended school

in the Mount Vernon area.  George served in the Army and was

honorably discharged.  He was united in marriage to Clara Mae

Arndt on Oct. 30, 1937, in Swaledale.  He spent most of his life

in the Swaledale-Mason City areas farming.  He had lived near

Nora Springs since 1975.  His favorite pastimes were spending

time outdoors watching nature and watching ``Andy Griffith''

reruns.  George was a former member of the Moose Lodge in Mason

City.



George is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William (Shirley)

Paulsen of Green Isle, Minn., and Sandra Crotty of Mason City;

four sons, George ``Oley'' and his wife, Helen Smith; Gary Smith;

Denny and his wife, Twila Smith, all of Mason City, Jerry Smith

of Nora Springs; three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Ella) Bruchner of

Hiawatha; Mrs. Lester (June) Greene of North English, and Mrs.

Mavis Madole of Mason City; two brothers, Roy and Dale Smith,

both of Mason City; 37 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren;

and two great-great-grandchildren.



George was preceded in death by his wife in October 1987; one

daughter, Dixie Paulsen; two sons, Gordon and Donald; his parents;

and one sister, Bonnie Marson.

James Grant McGowan Sr., 73, of 752 12th St. N.E., died Monday

(Feb. 12, 1996) at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Melvin ``Mully'' Fredricks

MASON CITY 



Melvin `Mully' Fredricks, 73, of 17736 280th St., died Thursday

(Feb. 8, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.



Memorial services will be held Saturday (Feb. 24, 1996) at the

First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Merlin Ackerson officiating.



There will be no visitation; the body was cremated.



Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is

in charge of arrangements.



Mully was born Nov. 30, 1922, in Flanagan, Ill., the son of

George and Ada (Dutcher) Fredricks.  He attended elementary and

high school in Nora Springs, graduating from Nora Springs High

School in 1941, then attended Upper Iowa University and Mason

City Junior College.  Mully served in the U.S. Navy during World

War II from 1943 to 1946 on the L.S.T. #970.  He played professional

baseball for the New York Yankees farm team and semi-pro baseball

for the Mason City Legionnaire team.  Mully married Mary ``Molly''

Winter on July 2, 1948, at the First United Methodist Church.

Mully was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 20

years.  After his retirement in 1975, Mully continued with many

hobbies and interests.  When not following the Hawkeyes, he raised

Arabian horses, maintained his bluebird trail, ham radio and

wood working.  He was a member of the First United Methodist

Church, VFW, Elks Lodge, American Legion and Benevolence Lodge

#145 A.F. and A.M.  One of his greatest pleasures was volunteering

at the Mercy Cancer Center until illness forced him to become

a patient.  He also was a member of the National Association

of Retired Federal Employees.



Memorials may be given to the Mercy Cancer Center or Hospice

of North Iowa.



Survivors include his wife, Mary ``Molly'' Fredricks of Mason

City; his mother, Ada Fredricks of Nora Springs; four sisters,

Wanda Walker and her husband, Darrell; Frances Kelley, and Doris

Fitzgerald, all of Nora Springs, and Marjorie Rockwell and her

husband, Jim, of Ramona, Calif.; many nieces and nephews; and

a sister-in-law, Mildred Fredricks of Stacyville.



He was preceded in death by his father and brother Roger.

Ruth E. Ouverson, 74, of 23794 Dogwood Ave., died Sunday (Feb.

11, 1996) in the comfort of her home and the loving presence

of her husband, Clarence.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the

Fertile Church of Christ with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.

Interment will be in Grant Center Township Cemetery, rural Fertile.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today and 9 to 11 a.m.

Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth

St., Clear Lake, and will continue one hour prior to services

at the church on Wednesday.



The family suggests memorials to the Fertile Church of Christ.



Ruth was born Sept. 24, 1921, in rural Fertile, the daughter

of Henry L. and Ruby (Carr) Nissen.  She attended schools in

Hanlontown and graduated from Fertile High School as valedictorian

in 1939.



She and Clarence were united in Holy Matrimony on March 2, 1940,

in Fertile.  From this union was born one son, Gary, who resides

at Grand Haven, Mich.



Ruthie loved her roses and gardening and apple trees.  She also

loved to sew and was employed at Stitchcraft, a division of Winnebago

Industries, for many years, retiring after more than 20 years

of service.



Ruthie and Clarence loved to travel but decided to retire at

their home on the farm near Fertile.  They were inseparable in

their worship of God and supportive of their church, the Fertile

Church of Christ.



Ruth is survived by her husband, Clarence Ouverson of Fertile;

one son, Gary Ouverson and his wife, Pat, and one granddaughter,

Shana Ouverson, all of Grand Haven, Mich.; one sister, Nelda

Behl of Forest City; and one brother, Lauren (Bill) Nissen of

Clear Lake.



She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Dorothy

Aspland and Margaret Mathison.



She will be sorrily missed by many other relatives and friends.

Sylvia I. Anderson was born Dec. 16, 1908, in Eagle Grove. After

her marriage to Leslie P. Anderson on Dec. 10, 1927, in Des Moines,

they lived in several Iowa towns, settling in the Waterville-Waukon

area in the mid-1930s.



Sylvia enjoyed flowers, like to quilt and sew and was an avid

reader. She also enjoyed traveling, particularly with her daughter

in later years. She was a loyal worker at her church and in its

ladies group.



Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Geilenfeld of Rudd; one

brother, Walter and his wife, Winnie Damon of Brighton, Mich.;

three sisters, Alta and her husband, Bill Turner of Knoxville,

Tenn.; Ione and her husband, Jim Sherlock of Allen Park, Mich.,

and Myrtle Hawkins of Smithville Flats, N.Y.; and two grandchildren,

George was born on April 15, 1917, in rural Clear Lake, the

He attended school in the Mount Vernon area.



George served in the Army and was honorably discharged.



He was united in marriage to Clara Mae Arndt on Oct. 30, 1937,

in Swaledale.



He spent most of his life in the Swaledale-Mason City areas

farming.  He had lived near Nora Springs since 1975.



His favorite pastimes were spending time outdoors watching

nature and watching ``Andy Griffith'' reruns.



George was a former member of the Moose Lodge in Mason City.



George is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William (Shirley)

Paulsen of Green Isle, Minn., and Sandra Crotty of Mason City;

four sons, George ``Oley'' and his wife, Helen Smith; Gary Smith;

Denny and his wife, Twila Smith, all of Mason City, Jerry Smith

of Nora Springs; three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Ella) Bruchner of

Hiawatha; Mrs. Lester (June) Greene of North English, and Mrs.

Mavis Madole of Mason City; two brothers, Roy and Dale Smith,

both of Mason City; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn ``Smith'' Lane

of Castana, Iowa; 37 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and

two great-great-grandchildren.



George was preceded in death by his wife in October 1987; one

daughter, Dixie Paulsen; two sons, Gordon and Donald; his parents;

James Grant McGowan Sr. was born March 28, 1922, in Mason City,

the son of Earl McGowan and Helen E. ``Babe'' (Garner) McGowan.



On Oct. 14, 1944, he married Ruth Ann Evans at Mason City.



Jim attended Mason City schools and graduated from Holy Family

High School in 1940. He attended Loras College in Dubuque.



He also served in the United States Air Force from 1943-1945,

stationed with the 8th Air Force in England.



After his military service, he returned to Mason City to join

the family business, the former Ideal Sand and Gravel Company,

where he was employed for 35 years. Later, he worked for Marshall

& Swift for 10 years until his retirement in 1984.



He enjoyed reading and working in the garden in his spare time.



He was a lifetime member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Knights

of Columbus, council #1006 and VFW Post, #733, all of Mason City.



James is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann, of Mason City; three

daughters, Mary ``Mickey'' Jensen and her husband, Craig, of

Clear Lake; Nancy Woods and her husband, Jon, of Mitchellville,

and Margaret ``Margy'' Kasik and her husband, Bill, of Mason

City; one son, Jim McGowan Jr. of Mason City; nine grandchildren,

Michele Jensen of Cedar Rapids, Lisa Jensen of Maryville, Mo.,

Sara Van Horn of Clear Lake, Jennifer Woods of Ames, Deidre Woods

Melvin `Mully' Fredricks, 73, of 17736 280th St., died Thursday

1996) at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave.,

Mully was born Nov. 30, 1922, in Flanagan, Ill., the son of

George and Ada (Dutcher) Fredricks.  He attended elementary and

high school in Nora Springs, graduating from Nora Springs High

School in 1941, then attended Upper Iowa University and Mason

City Junior College.  Mully served in the U.S. Navy during World

War II from 1943 to 1946 on the L.S.T. #970.  He played professional

baseball for the New York Yankees farm team and semi-pro baseball

for the Mason City Legionnaire team.  Mully married Mary ``Molly''

Winter on July 2, 1948, at the First United Methodist Church.

Mully was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 20

years.  After his retirement in 1975, Mully continued with many

hobbies and interests.  When not following the Hawkeyes, he raised

Arabian horses, maintained his bluebird trail, ham radio and

wood working.  He was a member of the First United Methodist

Church, VFW, Elks Lodge, American Legion and Benevolence Lodge

#145 A.F. and A.M.  One of his greatest pleasures was volunteering

at the Mercy Cancer Center until illness forced him to become

a patient.  He also was a member of the National Association

of Retired Federal Employees.



Memorials may be given to the Mercy Cancer Center or Hospice

of North Iowa.



Survivors include his wife, Mary ``Molly'' Fredricks of Mason

City; his mother, Ada Fredricks of Nora Springs; four sisters,

Wanda Walker and her husband, Darrell; Frances Kelley, and Doris

Fitzgerald, all of Nora Springs, and Marjorie Rockwell and her

husband, Jim, of Ramona, Calif.; many nieces and nephews; and

Verna Clausen was born Nov. 4, 1907, in Angus, to George Mendon

and Florence (Chambers) Mendon.



At the age of 3, her family moved to Ogden, where Verna grew

up and attended school. She graduated from Ogden High School

in 1924.



Verna married C. J. ``Dick'' Clausen on Jan. 20, 1926.



They made their home in Ogden until 1943, when they moved to

the Mason City-Rock Falls area. The couple owned a farm near

Rock Falls before retiring to their home in Mason City in 1969.



She was a faithful member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and

was active in the LUGA Club and the Rock Falls Senior Citizens.



Throughout her life, she enjoyed her family, good friends, children

of all ages and playing cards.



Verna is survived by one sister, Florence Nobens of Ogden; one

brother, Harry Mendon of Grand Rapids, Minn; one brother-in-law;

several sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and a host

of devoted friends.
