Helen Marguerite Christiansen Troutman

CRYSTAL LAKE 



     Helen M. Troutman, 82, a former resident of Algona and Crystal

Lake, died Wednesday (Sept. 6, 1995) at the Salsbury Baptist

Home, Charles City.



Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Algona

United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Suetterlin officiating.

Burial will be in the East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Algona.



There will be no visitation before the memorial service.  Hauser

Funeral Home, Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.



Helen Marguerite Christiansen Troutman was born Sept. 30, 1912,

in Dickens.



Survivors include two sons, Harley Troutman of Orchard, and 

Dr. F.J. Troutman of Waverly; two sisters, Laura Thiewes of 

Minnetonka, Minn., and Jewell Storm of Algona; 10 grandchildren; 

and 24 great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister.

A. Maxine Hanes

MASON CITY  



     A. Maxine Hanes, 63, of 428 27th St. S.W., died Thursday (Sept.

7, 1995) at the IOOF Home.

     

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Our Saviour's

Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., with the Rev. DuWayne

Dalen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer

Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., where a Rebekah service

will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Further visitation will be

held one hour prior to services at the church Monday.



Maxine was born Aug. 27, 1932, at St. James, Mo., a daughter

of Charles R. Piper and Vivian L. Piper (nee) Nutting.  She 

married Johnnie E. Hanes on April 2, 1951, at Salem, Ark.



She attend school at St. James, Mo., graduating from St. James

High School.



Maxine was a bookkeeper at Central States Auto Auction for 22

years, retiring in 1982.



She was a member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church, Rebekah Lodge,

#106, and VFW Auxillary, all of Mason City.



Survivors include her husband, Johnnie E. Hanes of Mason City;

one son, Johnnie R. Hanes of Estes Park, Colo.; one sister, 

Pearl McWhorter of Mason City; one brother, Jack Piper and his wife,

Grace of Mason City; and a sister-in-law, Vivian Piper of Mason

City.



She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Tip Piper.

Jerome J. `Jerry' Sweeney

CEDAR RAPIDS  



     Jerome J. ``Jerry'' Sweeney, 70, of 3306 Crestwood Drive N.W.,

died Thursday (Sept. 7, 1995) at Mercy Medical Center after a

long illness.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Jude

Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, with the  Rev. Craig Steimel officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery with military services.



Visitation will be held  from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Teahen

Funeral Home, 3100 F Ave. N.W., Cedar Rapids,  with a 7 p.m.

vigil service. There will be further visitation from 8:30 to

9:30 a.m. on Monday.



Jerome J. Sweeney was born Nov. 26, 1924, in Dougherty. He married

Barbara Rurup on  Oct. 28, 1950, in Dougherty.



He retired from the USDA as a federal meat inspector.



He was a United States Army veteran of World War II.



He was a member of the VFW #788, the American Legion Hanford

Post #5, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees

and St. Jude Catholic Church.



Jerry was a very kind man and loved everyone with his warm Irish

heart. He will be dearly missed. 



Survivors include his wife, Barbara; eight daughters, Catherine Gaffney 

and her husband, Tom of Marion; Christine Austin and

her husband, Rick of Lisbon; Karen Bolt and her husband, Robert

of Indianapolis, Ind.; Anne Venditti and her husband, Tracy,

of Cedar Rapids; Eileen Rose Kremer and her husband, John of

Cedar Rapids; Delores Crum and her husband, George, of Le Grand;

Patricia Cram, and Mary Sweeney and her fiancee, Jim Brown, all

of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Daniel and Steven Sweeney, both of

Cedar Rapids; a sister, Helen Balster of Marion; and 13 grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three

brothers.

Ressie A. Borcherding

HAMPTON  



     Ressie A. Borcherding, 95, died Friday (Sept. 8, 1995) at the

Hampton Health Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's

Lutheran Church, Latimer, with the Rev. Dennis Arndt officiating.

 Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today with a public

prayer service at 7 p.m., at Willim Funeral Home, Latimer.



Ressie A. Borcherding was born July 29, 1900, in Bloomington, IL.



Survivors include several nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother

and three sisters.

Raymond E. Beers

EMMONS, Minn 



     Raymond E. Beers, 71, died Thursday (Sept. 7, 1995) at the

Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Emmons

Lutheran Church, Emmons, Minn., with the Rev. Dennis Johnson

officiating. Burial will be  at 1 p.m. at the Kensett Cemetery.



Raymond E. Beers was born Jan. 7, 1924, in  Livermore, Iowa.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Mittelstadt

Funeral Home, Lake Mills.



Survivors include his wife, Bernice Beers of Emmons;   two sons,

Steven Beers of Minneapolis and Glen Beers of Austin, Minn.; four 

daughters, Susan Brighton and Karen Henderson, both of Lake Mills, 

Kathie Thorson of Forest City and Ann DeVries of Lake Mills; 12 

grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Lester Beers 

of Hamilton, Mont.; and three sisters, Esther Hobbs of Hamilton, 

Mont., Evelyn Oakland of Austin, Minn., and Bonnie Haroldson of 

Des Moines.



He was preceded in death by his parents,  one son, two brothers

and two sisters.

John Benjamin Thompson

NORTHWOOD  



     John Benjamin Thompson, 77, of Northwood, died Friday (Sept.

8, 1995) at his home in Northwood.

     

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at  First Lutheran Church,

Northwood, with the Revs. Mark Bents and Tom Hankins officiating.

Burial will be in  Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood, with graveside

military honors by Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post #6779 in Northwood.



Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Conner Colonial

Chapel, 99 11th Street S., Northwood, and one hour prior to service

time on Monday at the church.



John Benjamin Thompson was born on Nov. 27, 1917, in Northwood,

the son of Lewis J. Thompson and Hilda Christine Thompson (nee) Hanson. 

He was baptized on Jan. 27, 1918, and affirmed the faith of baptism

through confirmation on May 10, 1931, in Northwood.



He attended and received his education in the Northwood school

system, graduating from Northwood High School in 1935. He also

attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.



He was inducted into the United States Army on May 9, 1941,

at Fort Des Moines, serving overseas during World War II in the

European Theater in the 53rd Battalion where he was awarded the

Bronze Star and was honorably discharged on July 28, 1945, at

Fort Sheridan, Ill.



He was united in marriage to Virginia Lee McHenry on Sept. 2,

1945, in Northwood and they had just celebrated their 50th wedding

anniversary.



In 1948, they moved to Albuquerque, N.M.,  where John worked

for the Southern Union Gas Company until 1955, when they returned

to Northwood. He was employed by Doug Pangburn at  Doug's Market

in Northwood  until, along with John's wife, Virginia, and Doyle

and Dorothy Boutelle he purchased the market, calling it the

J-D One Stop which was located where the Short Stop is in Northwood.

He also worked for Randall Transit Mix Company, Harris Quarry

and also helped his son, Lewis, in the saw milling business,

all in Northwood.



He enjoyed fishing, mechanic work, helping his son  at the mill,

crossword puzzles, walking and traveling and was an avid Minnesota

Viking fan. But his great love and enjoyment was his family.



He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood and Our

Buddies VFW Memorial Post  No. 6779 in Northwood.



Survivors include his wife, Virginia Thompson of Northwood;

one daughter, Lucretia Ferley and her husband, Gerald, of Northwood;

one son, the Rev. Lewis Thompson and his wife, Karen, of Bloomer,

Wis.; six grandchildren, Wesley and Danica Ferley of Northwood,

and Keo, Gretchen, Ingrid and John Thompson of Bloomer, Wis.;

one sister, June Lancaster and her husband, Hubert, of Houston,

Texas, as well as other relatives and friends. 



He was preceded in death by his parents  and one brother, 

Lloyd Kenneth Thompson.

Mildred Naomi Cady Mason

Mildred Naomi Mason (nee) Cady

WINONA, Minn. 



     Mildred Naomi Cady Mason, devoted wife, mother and grandmother,

died on Tuesday (Sept. 5, 1995) at the age of 91, at St. Anne

Hospice in Winona, Minn.



Mildred Naomi Mason was born May 3, 1904, in Rockwell, Iowa,

to Colby O. Cady and Mary Rebecca Harmon Cady.



The family moved to Mason City, Iowa, shortly thereafter and

Mildred lived there until December of 1993.



She graduated from Mason City High School in May of 1922 and

started nurses' training at the Park Hospital Training School

in Mason City in 1922, graduating in 1925.



She was certified as a registered nurse after passing the state

board exams with the highest grade in the state.



She worked as a floor nurse and private duty nurse until 1928,

at which time she attended the University of Minnesota, receiving

a Public Health Nursing Certificate after one year of study.

Mildred then worked as a Public Health Nurse for the Cedar Falls

(Iowa) school district and for the Sartori Memorial Hospital

in Cedar Falls.



On March 21, 1930, Mildred married Robert William Mason of Mason

City. She continued her nursing career, mainly at the Park Hospital

as a floor supervisor and then for many years as an emergency

room nurse, until retirement at the age of 70.



Her private life was often devoted to helping the sick and needy

and to community projects. She was a lifelong member of the First

Baptist Church of Mason City.



Mildred was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert,

in March of 1965; and by 11 brothers and sisters.



She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Mason Foss, of Winona,

Minn., and Marjorie Mason Kirsch of Wylie, Texas; two devoted

sons-in-law, Frederick W. Foss and Horst G. Kirsch; five grandchildren,

Stephen F. Foss of Elk Grove, Calif.; Andrew M. Foss of Winona,

Minn.; Jason A. Foss, of Kaneohe, Hawaii; Erika N. Kirsch, of

Dallas, Texas, and Christopher E. Kirsch, of Jacksonville, Ariz.;

one sister, Evelyn Burns, of Salem, Ore., and many nieces and

nephews.



A memorial service for family and friends will be arranged at

a later date. Memorials may be directed to Habitat for Humanity

County Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 1183, Winona, Minn. 55987.



Mildred will be missed by her family and friends. Those who

knew her, know that her true spirit was her ever present sense

of humor, her dogged determination and her unfailing sense of

duty.

Frank Tienan

ST. PAUL, Minn.  



     Frank Tienan, 66, a former sportswriter, columnist and editor

at several Minnesota newspapers, who later became an award-winning

salesman with a motel brokerage firm, died Friday (Sept. 8, 1995)

of cancer at the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Fort

Snelling.



Frank Tienan was born and raised northwest of Ventura, Iowa.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in

Ventura. He was a graduate of Ventura High School and received

a B.S. degree from the Valporaiso University.



Tienan's journalist credits included a stint as a St. Paul Pioneer

Press and Dispatch sportswriter and columnist from 1968 to 1970.

While at the papers, he covered high school sports and wrote

news and feature stories.



While serving in the United States Air Force during the early

1950s, he worked as editor of the Tyndall AFB Times in Panama

City. Fla., and as a newscaster and sports director with the

Armed Forces Radio in the Azores, Portugal.



Later in the 1950s, Tienan worked as editor of various newspapers,

including the Shakopee Argus-Tribune, the Golden Valley Press

and the St. Louis Park Dispatch. He founded the Prior Lake American

and worked as state editor of the Mason City (Iowa) Globe Gazette.



During the 1960s, he was executive sports editor and columnist

at Twin Cities-based Suburban Newspapers Inc. He covered the

Minnesota Twins, Vikings, University of Minnesota and high-school

sports in more than 30 communities. He also did play-by-play

broadcasts on KIRS radio.



From 1974 to 1983, Tienan worked as a motel broker and salesman

for Westgor & Associates, an affiliate of the Motel Brokers of

America.



While working as a broker, he was afree-lance writer whose credits

included the Minneapolis Star, the Gannett Newspaper chain, Minnesota

Motorist, Sports Digest, Great Lakes Sportsman and Fishing Pro.



Tienan briefly operated a used book store during the early 1980s

and later sold plots and markers for a cemetery.



He is survived by his companion, Doris Zurovskyz of St. Paul;

son, Greg Tienan-Kane of Nashville; daughters Claudia and Andrea

of New York City; stepdaughter Sherrie Abrahamson of St. Paul;

stepson, Ally Zurovsky of Bloomington; brother, Doug of Bloomington;

sister, Phyllis Postma of Las Vegas; and grandchildren, Shila,

Tabitha, Justin and LeighAnne.



Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today followed by a service

at 7 p.m. at the Listoe-Wold-Bradshaw Funeral Home, 678 Snelling

Ave. S., St. Paul, Minn.

Herman L. Ostercamp

BRITT  



     Herman L. Ostercamp, 64, died Saturday (Sept. 9, 1995)

at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Evangelical

Free Church with the Rev. Bill Culbertson and the Rev. Doug Schoonover

officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery with a flag

presentation by the Britt American Legion and Veterans of Foreign

War.



Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ewing Funeral Home

and one hour prior to services at the church.



Herman L. Ostercamp was born May 14, 1931 in Wesley.



Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Ostercamp, Britt; two daugthers,

Carla DeYoung of Richfield, Minn., Twyla Ostercamp, Sioux City;

three sons, Craig Ostercamp, Harold Ostercamp and Dennis Ostercamp,

all of Britt; three sisters, Bonnie Weiland, Freemont, Marie Hiscocks, 

Dexter, Minn., and Joyce Heen of Lincoln, Nebr.; one brother, 

George Ostercamp of Chandler, Ariz.



He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Myrtle Olson

FOREST CITY  



     Mrs. Myrtle Olson, 97, died Saturday (Sept. 9, 1995) at the

Good Samaritan Center.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at West Prairie

Lutheran Church in Leland with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating.

Burial will be in West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.



Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Petersen Lund

Funeral Home.



Myrtle Olson was born April 2, 1898 in West Bend.



Survivors include two daughters, Rozella Hagen, Forest City

and Marjorie Bakke of Huntington Beach, Calif.; one sister, 

Leonore Peterson of Forest City; two step-sisters, Lorraine Bartleson,

Lake Mills and Kathryn Carlson of Mankato, Minn.; 12 grandchildren

and 21 great grandchildren.

William `Bill' [Jr.] Bublitz

WAUKON 



     William ``Bill'' Bublitz, 70, of 960 Fourth St. N.W., Waukon,

died Sunday (Sept. 10, 1995) at the Northgate Care Center, Waukon.



Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Martin

Funeral Home, Waukon, with the Rev. Larry Olson officiating.

Burial will be in the French Creek Cemetery, rural Lansing, with

military graveside rites by the Waukon Veterans.



Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Martin's Funeral Home.



William Bublitz was born July 28, 1925 in Lansing, the son of

William [Sr.] Bublitz and Lydia Emma (nee) Buege Bublitz.  He was 

born on his parents' French Creek Township farm.



He attended rural elementary schools, and graduated from Waukon

High School. He went to the Waukon Junior College for two years.



After his schooling, he joined the United States Army and served

as a technician during World War II from 1945 to 1946 with the

60th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Division seeing action in Germany

and other European countries. 



Following the service, he worked as an auto mechanic and body

man for Haugsted Auto and Williams Auto Repair in Waukon.



He enjoyed sports, car races and spending time with his friends.



Survivors include his brothers, Allen Bublitz of Waukon; 

Albert Bublitz and his wife, Mary Lou, of Waukon, and Dale Bublitz 

and his wife, Cecilia, of Mason City; and one sister, Ruby Sivesind

of Oelwein.



He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Vern Bublitz, 

Floyd and Merlin Bublitz; and sister, Gladys Lang.

Bradley Ray Humphrey

DOUGLAS, WYO. 



     Memorial services for Bradley Ray Humphrey, 32, of Douglas,

Wyo., will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist

Church in Garner.



Brad died Sept. 1, 1995, while on an expedition called  ``Ocean

to Ice Cap Expedition 1995''  sponsored by the Wyoming Alpine

Club of Laramie, Wyo.



Brad and three other members of the expedition plus an Eskimo

guide were on an 18-foot boat when a bow head whale overturned

it.  All were submerged in the Arctic waters.  Brad and the three

from Wyoming were overcome by the Arctic waters.  The Eskimo

guide was the only survivor.  Search and rescue has not been

able to locate the missing bodies.



Brad was born Feb. 10, 1963, at Britt and graduated from Centerville

High School in 1981 and from Luther College in Decorah in 1985.



He was employed by the U.S. Forest Service in Douglas, Wyo.

as an archaeologist.



Survivors include his parents, John Wendell and Linda Humphrey

of 900 Mikels Drive, Centerville, Iowa 52544; a brother, Michael Humphrey

of Louisville, Ky.; grandparents, Ray and Lou Fisher of Klemme

and John and Helen Humphrey of Garner; plus a host of aunts,

uncles, cousins and many many friends.



Memorials may be directed to the family in Brad's name where

a scholarship has been established in his name at the Centerville

High School.



Brad will be lovingly remembered as a very loving, caring person

and for his love of God's outdoors.

Marvin H. Berends

ALLISON 



     Marvin H. Berends, 71, of Allison, died Sunday (Sept. 10, 1995)

at the Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the

Dumont Reformed Church. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.



Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel

Funeral Home, Dumont.



Marvin H. Berends was born May 11, 1924, at Grundy County.



Survivors include three daughters, Kerry Burkett of Dumont;

Lorie Flickinger of Ames, and Melinda Berends of Marble Rock;

one son, Mark Berends of Allison; his mother, Martha Berends

of Ames; seven sisters, Florence Harms of Ackley; Carrie Kruger

of Holland; Marjorie Rewerts of Parkersburg; Francis Schipper

of Aplington; Beverly Schipper of Aplington; Delores Christophel

of Aplington, and Karen Brouwer of Parksburg; and five grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one

grandson.

Sterling Keith Larson

GARNER 



     Services for Sterling Larson, 76, of Garner, who died Sunday

(Sept. 10, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason

City, will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Peace Reformed Church,

south of Garner, with the Rev. Robert E. Grossmann officiating.

Burial will be in Peace Reformed Cemetery, with graveside military

rites conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.



Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Cataldo Funeral

Chapel in Garner.



Sterling Keith Larson, the son of Andrew O. Larson and 

Elizabeth Mary Knudson was born June 10, 1919, at Jewell.



After graduating from Randall High School in 1937, he worked

with his uncle in the Chevrolet Garage in Jewell.



Sterling served his country in the United States Army in the

South Pacific Theater from 1942-45. After the service, he returned

to Jewell.



On June 15, 1953, he married Judith Marie Haberkamp at the Peace

Reformed Church south of Garner. They lived in Alden for one

year and then moved to Garner where they farmed until 1984, when

they moved into town.



He was a member of Peace Reformed Church where he had served

as a Deacon and usher. He belonged to the American Legion, Garner

Rotary Club, Farm Bureau and had served on the board of directors

for both the Farmer's Cooperative Society and Prairie View Apartments.



He is survived by his daughter, Joan L. Skolas and her husband,

John, of Landenberg, Pa.; his son, Kimm S. Larson and his wife,

Kathy, of Garner; his beloved granddaughter, Kristi Rae Larson,

the ``sunshine'' of his life; and a brother, Stanley Larson and

his wife, Erma, of Jewell.



He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Larson, Jan. 28,

1995. and his parents.

BELMOND  



     Clara Mae Pals, 80, of Belmond, died Saturday (Sept. 9, 1995)

at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the

United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Laurence Garrett officiating.



Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral

Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the church.



Clara was born May 14, 1915, near Dows.



Survivors include her son, Terry Pals of Marina, Calif.; three grandsons;

and two sisters, June Hofsommer of Dows and Nora Senefielder

of Minneapolis, Minn.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one infant

son, one sister and one brother.

     Harley Jacobsen, 98, of Dows, died Sunday (Sept. 10, 1995)

at the Dows Healthcare Center.



Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Abundant

Life Chapel, with the Rev. Edward Akins officiating. Burial will

be in the Fairview Cemetery.



Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Elledge Funeral Home, Dows.

Otto Albrecht

NORTHWOOD 



     Otto Albrecht Jr., 62, of Northwood, formerly of New Hampton,

died Saturday (Sept. 9, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center,

Mason City, after a long illness.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Trinity

Lutheran Church, New Hampton, with the Rev. David Bergstrom officiating.

Burial will be in the New Hampton Cemetery.



Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

The Larkin-Martin Funeral Home, New Hampton, is in charge of

arrangements.



Survivors include one sister, Ruth Moeller, Waverly; three brothers,

the Rev. John Albrecht, of Rockford, and Ted Albrecht, of Van

Meter, and Robert Albrecht, of Clear Lake.



He was preceded in death by his parents.

     Kelly Kay Chavez, 31, of 620 East Indian Creek, Grand Junction,

Kelly was born Dec. 10, 1963, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter

of Lloyd Donald Nedved and Mitzy Marlene Schulze Nedved.



She was raised in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High

School. She also attended North Iowa Area Community College.



She was a registered nurse.



She had lived in Mason City, Iowa. She moved to Grand Junction,

then to Snowmass, Colo., then back to Grand Junction in 1994.



She loved camping, skiing and the mountains.



She is survived by one son, Adam Ross Chavez of Mason City,

Iowa; her mother, Mitzy Nedved and her stepfather, Wayne of Mason

City; and her father, Lloyd Nedved and her stepmother, Pat of

Nevis, Minn.; one brother, Donald Nedved and and his wife, 

Shawn Nedved, of Shawnee, Kan.; her maternal grandmother, Viola Schulze

of Mason City, and paternal grandmother, Dorothy Nedved of Mason

City; and numerous aunts, uncles and a nephew, Drew Nedved;

and a special friend, Mike.

John H. Penney

DES MOINES 

 

     John H. Penney, 31, of 1354 60th St., died Monday (Sept. 11,

1995) at home.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Theresa's

Catholic Church, Des Moines. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery,

Des Moines.



Visitation will begin at 7 p.m. today at Westover Funeral Home,

Des Moines, with a 7 p.m. vigil service.



An education fund for John's children is being established at

Norwest Bank, 4501 Douglas Ave., Des Moines, Iowa 50310; Attn:

Colleen Pagano in his memory.



John H. Penney was born Dec. 21, 1963, in Rochester, Minn.,

a son of Stuart and Rosemary Penney.



He had lived in Des Moines for the last 13 years.



He was a mechanic for Ryder Truck.



He was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church and the International

Association of Machinists.



Survivors include his wife, Donna Penney of Des Moines; one

daughter, Emily Penney; and one son, Jacob Penney, both at home;

his parents, Stuart and Rosemary Penney of Stacyville; one brother,

Jim Penney of Ames; five sisters, Mary Jo Pfeifer of Newton,

Deborah Penney-Crockett of Ames, Elaine Timmons of Des Moines,

Rita Penney of Des Moines and Ann Decker of Dubuque.

Edna Marie Rodemeyer

HAMPTON 



     Edna M. Rodemeyer, 74, of Hampton, died Monday (Sept. 11, 1995)

at the Sheffield Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity

Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Martin Hoesch officiating. Burial

will be in the Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hampton.



Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sietsema-Vogel

Funeral Home.



Edna Marie Rodemeyer was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Chapin.



Survivors include one daughter, DeLana Folz of Phoeniz, Ariz.;

and two brothers, Henry Depping of Latimer and Leland Depping

of Thornton.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother.

Ethel Peters

CHARLES CITY 



     Ethel Peters, 87, of 302 North Grand, died Tuesday (Sept. 12,

1995) at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St.

John Evangelical Lutheran Church.  The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag and

the Rev. Karen Behling, will officiate.  Burial will be in the

New Hampton Cemetery.



Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from noon until

9 p.m.  Friday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and after

9 a.m. Saturday at the church.



Ethel Janet Richards Peters was born May 10, 1908, in Decorah.



Survivors include three daughters, Glenna Leuenberger of Fort

Dodge, Georgena Miller of Charles City, and Michelle Miller

of Des Moines; six granddaughters, four great-grandchildren;

three brothers, Oliver Richards of Minneapolis, Minn.; Olaf Richards

of Albert Lea, Minn., and Russell Richards of Minneapolis, Minn.,

five sisters, Mae Stemson of Austin, Minn.; Cora Lundy of Elkhorn,

Neb.; Grace Rabe of Denver, Colo.; Norma Helebrant of Mankato,

Minn., and Gloria Landgren of Scottsdale, Ariz.



The family suggests memorials be given to Heart to Home Hospice

or the Needy Fund of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Virginia L. Rethamel

NORA SPRINGS 



Virginia L. Rethamel, 70, of 1535 Rock Grove Lane, Nora Springs,

died Tuesday (Sept. 12, 1995) at her home.



There will be no visitation.  The body was cremated.  Sheckler

Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye, is in charge of arrangements.



Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen

Cemetery, Rudd, with the Rev. Richard Pippert of Nora Springs

United Methodist Church, officiating.



In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Virginia

L. Rethamel.



Virginia L. Rethamel was born Dec. 18, 1924, in Rudd, daughter

of Garrett H. Brierly and Adda E. Tibbits Brierly.  She married 

Arthur W. Rethamel on Sept. 5, 1948, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.



Virginia grew up in the Nora Springs area and graduated from

Nora Springs High School in 1942.  Before her marriage, she waitressed

in Nora Springs and worked for Mason City Tent and Awning.  She

then was a bookkeeper and secretary for Rethamel Construction

for many years.  She enjoyed the outdoors.  She loved to spend

time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She and her husband just celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary.



Survivors include her husband Art Rethamel, Nora Springs; two

sons, Don Rethamel and his wife Connie, and Dan Rethamel and

his wife Deb, both of Nora Springs; four brothers, Delbert Brierly

and his wife Iris; Gale Brierly and his wife Betty; Gordon Brierly

and his wife Corrine, and Burton Brierly, all of Nora Springs;

one sister, Mary Lou Stoltenberg and her husband Fred, Tripoli;

five grandchildren, Jodee L. Rethamel, Mason City; Julie A. Fingalsen,

Jamie R. Rethamel, Robin R. Rethamel, and Avery L. Rethamel,

all of Nora Springs; two great-grandchildren, Laci Jo Rethamel

and Zachery Tanner, both of Mason City; and many other relatives

and close friends.



She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Kenneth Brierly

and Howard Brierly, and one sister, Etna May Brierly.

Walter J. Murphy

DOUGHERTY 



     Walter J. Murphy, 88, of Dougherty died Tuesday (Sept. 12,

1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

     

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's

Catholic Church, Dougherty, with the Rev. Stephen Meyer, officiating.

Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dougherty. 



Visitation will be held after 3 p.m. today at St. Patrick's

school in Dougherty, where a prayer service will be held at 5

p.m., a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., followed by a K of

C rosary.



Walt was born April 9, 1907, at Dougherty, a son of John Murphy and

Rose Reilly Murphy.  He married Louise Paulus on June 5, 1934,

at Holy Name Catholic Church, Rockford.



He attended rural Dougherty schools, and graduated from Ada High 

School, Ada, Minn.  For a short time he farmed with his father,   

John, near Ada, Minn.



Walt farmed north of Dougherty for many years, until retiring.

He served on the Dougherty Farmers Co-op board of directors,

was a township trustee, and township assessor for Cerro Gordo

County.



He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dougherty;

and a Fourth Degree member of Knights of Columbus Council, #1006,

Mason City.



Survivors include, five daughters, (Mrs. Donavon) Rosemary Staudt,

Dougherty; Sister Walter Marie, Dougherty; Sister Marie Louise,

Dougherty; (Mrs. Alexander) Shirley Devereux, Norway, Iowa; (Mrs.

William) Donna Devereux, Hampton; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren;

two brothers, Ed Murphy, Mason City; Frank Murphy, Mason City;

two sisters, Sister Mary Ellen, Algona; (Mrs. Clark) Mauriece

Dougherty, Dougherty.



He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Louise in

1983, a sister, Mary Merfeld and three brothers, Father Joseph Murphy, 

Jim Murphy, and Vince Murphy.
