Cora S. Martinson
MASON CITY 

     Cora S. Martinson, 85, 843 Sixth St. S.W., died Saturday (Sept.
2, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.  Funeral services will 
be held at 11 a.m. today at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. 
S.E.,  with the Rev. David Anderson officiating.  Burial will be in 
Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and will continue one
hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Cora S. Martinson Memorial
Fund.

Cora was born April 29, 1910, at Ottosen, Iowa, to Rasmus Ellingson 
and Kari Ellingson (nee) Nelson. 

She attended school in Ottosen and married William R. Martinson
on July 6, 1928, in Mason City.  They lived in Lake Mills for
most of their married life, moving to Mason City in 1956.

She worked for the Hub Clothiers and Stevensons in Mason City
as a seamstress.  She loved to work with crafts and she enjoyed
getting together for family gatherings and spending time with
her grandchildren.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, the ladies circle
of the church  and the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include her daughters, JoAnn Carlsen and her husband,
Darrell, of Clarks Grove, Minn., Sheryl Pavelka and her husband,
Joseph, of Hastings, Minn., Karen Lien and her husband, Jack,
of Mason City, and Lou Jean Hayes and her husband, Donald, of
Waterloo; sons, Milford R. Martinson and his wife, Mary Lou,
of Chillicothe, Ill., and Bill R. Martinson and his wife, Cindy,
of Mason City; sisters, Rose Bakken of Kiester, Minn., and 
Elaine Dierson of Fairmont, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 
22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; 
and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William
R., in 1983; her son, Gary, in 1936; and six brothers.

John Michael Peterson
ST. ANSGAR 

     John Michael Peterson, 34, of 511 W. Fifth Street, St. Ansgar,
died Sunday (Sept. 3, 1995) at Methodist Hospital, Rochester,
Minn. after a six-month battle with leukemia.
     
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church, Dougherty, with the Rev. Stephen Meyer and the
Rev. Paul Otting, of St. Ansgar Catholic Church, officiating.
Burial will be in Osage Cemetery, Osage.

Visitation will begin 3 p.m. today at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church, Dougherty, with a 7 p.m. Scriptural prayer service and
rosary.

John Michael Peterson was born Jan. 24, 1961, in Vinton, son
of James A. Peterson and Jean (nee) Eiel Peterson.

He married Colette Staudt on Aug. 21, 1993, at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church, Dougherty.

John grew up in Vinton and graduated from Washington High School
in Vinton in 1979. He attended Luther College and graduated from
Iowa State University in Ames in 1983 with a Bachelor of Animal
Science. He was co-owner and manager of St. Ansgar Lumber Company.

John had a great sense of humor and he was very close to his
family. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing.

He was a member of St. Ansgar Catholic Church, the First Responders
and the Lions Club in St. Ansgar. He was a lifetime member of
Iowa State University Alumni and the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.

Survivors include his wife, Colette and their infant son, Philip
Michael, born July 20, 1995, of St.Ansgar; his parents, 
Jim and Jean Peterson, of Vinton; his parents-in-law, 
Donald and Betty Staudt, of Dougherty; two brothers, 
Steve Peterson and his wife, Kate of Madison, Wis., and 
Randy Peterson and his wife, Julie of Vinton; two sisters-in-law, 
Jackie Staudt-Netzel and her husband, Mike, of Monroe, Wis., and 
Connie Trautman and her husband, Dan of Cedar Rapids; two 
brothers-in-law, Christ Staudt and his wife, Shelle, of Dougherty, 
and Morris Staudt and his wife,  Cindy of Dougherty; his grandfather-
in-law, Vern Merfeld, of Greene; and nine nieces and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City,
is in charge of arrangements.

Kathryn Grosland
FREMONT, Neb. 

     Kathryn Grosland, 63, of Fremont, Neb., died Thursday (Aug.
24, 1995) as a result of a car-truck accident in Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, 1995
at St. Theodore's Catholic Church, Albert Lea, Minn., with the
Rev. Robert Schneider officiating. Interment will be in St. Theodore's
Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Bonnerup
Funeral Service in Albert Lea, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Kathryn was born July 24, 1932 in Austin, Minn., 
to Fred and Mary Mentel. She graduated from St. Augustine High 
School and after high school, she worked for Nordaas Homes.

She married Virgil Grosland on March 13, 1952 at Queen of Angels
Church in Austin and they lived in Albert Lea, Minn.

A few years later, they moved to Northwood, Iowa to farm, raising
cattle, chickens, pigs and growing corn and soybeans. She also
worked for Miami Margarine in Albert Lea for a short time.

In 1974, they sold the farm and moved to Austin, Minn., where
she continued to be a housewife and mother.

In 1978 she moved with her husband, Virgil to Fremont, Neb.
where she resided with him until her death.

While she lived in Fremont, she sold American Guaranty Life
Insurance, Stanley and Avon Products and worked for FTE Telemarketing.

Kathryn enjoyed talking to her grandchildren, playing cards,
collecting music boxes, doing ceramics and being involved in
community events and church choir.

Kathryn is survived by her husband, Virgil; four children, 
Mary K. Grosland of Owatonna, Minn., Valerie Madsen and her husband,
Chris of Fremont, Neb., Todd Grosland of Waseca, Minn. and 
Theresa Frost and her husband, Daryl of Delano, Minn; four grandchildren,
Amanda, Hannah and Sara Frost, and Travis Madson; a sister and
brother-in-law, Marcella  and Melvin Schwartz of Rose Creek,
Minn.; brothers and sister-in-laws, Harry and Stella Mentel and
Clarence and Elaine Mentel, both of Austin, Minn.; nieces and
nephews.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, 
Mark D. Grosland.

Howard George Clapham
GREENE 

     Funeral services for Howard G. Clapham, 80, of 402 N. First
St., Greene,  will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist
Church in Greene, with Pastor Gene Burry and Pastor Perry Brown
officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral
Chapel in Greene where the family will receive friends from 7
to 9 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at
the church on Wednesday.

Howard George Clapham was born Dec. 22, 1914 in Canby, Minn.,
the son of Emmett W. Clapham and Anna Clapham (nee) Larson; 
and died Sunday (Sept. 3, 1995) at Muse Norris Hospice Unit of 
North Iowa in Mason City.

He lived his childhood years in Canby and Jordan, Minn.

In 1926 he and his family moved to the Greene area where he
received his education in rural Butler County Schools.

On July 3, 1943, he was married to Esther T. Miller in Dumont.
They farmed in the rural Greene area until 1960 when he became
employed as a custodian for Greene Community Schools until his
retirement in January of 1980. Esther passed away on May 8, 1987.

Howard loved his family and many friends, playing cards and
going for rides in Greene and the countryside of Butler County.
He was a member of United Methodist Church of Greene.

Survivors include one daughter, Sue and son-in-law Dick Swartz
of Andover, Minn.; one son, Steve and daughter-in-law, Kris of
Greene; three grandchildren, Katie Swartz Rousemiller and husband,
Christopher of St. Paul, Minn.; Nate and Ross Clapham, both of
Greene; one sister, Evelyn and her husband, Charles Truex of
Greene; two nephews, Don McGee of Greene and Terry Truex of Waukee,
Iowa; and a special friend, Ruby Erpelding of Greene.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther; his parents; and
two sisters, Lenore Shafer and Margaret Pringle.

Gertrude W. Lindquist
FERTILE 

     Gertrude Lindquist, 89, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Fertile,
died Friday (Sept. 1, 1995) at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Church of
Christ, Fertile, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Burial
will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City, is in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude W. Lindquist was born in Beloit, Wis., on May 7, 1906,
the daughter of Walter Varner and Nellie Varner (nee) Kirby.

She received her education in the school system at Clemons,
Iowa and graduated from high school there.

She married Leslie Lindquist at St. Anthony, Iowa. The couple
farmed in the St. Anthony area during the early years of their
marriage.

In 1932, they moved to Fertile, Iowa. Gertrude worked for several
years as a cook for the Fertile school and later worked at Stitchcraft
at Winnebago Industries in Forest City.

She was a member of Church of Christ in Fertile for over 60
years and was very active in the church.

She enjoyed gardening and crocheting. Leslie died in 1980. Gertrude
moved to the Willows in Mason City in 1989. Last year, she moved
to Cedar Rapids to be nearer to her daughter.

She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Purcell of Cedar Rapids,
Iowa; two sons, Lyle Lindquist of San Francisco, Calif., and
Dale Lindquist of St. Louis Park, Minn.; a sister-in-law, 
Francis Lindquist of Lynnwood, Calif.; a niece, Maxine McCormack 
of Garden City, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leslie Lindquist; 
a son, Lane Lindquist; and a brother, Earnest Varner.

William Virgil Buck
RICEVILLE 

     William V. Buck, 86, of Riceville, died Saturday (Sept. 2,
1995) at Maple Manor Nursing Home, Osage.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate
Conception Church, Riceville, with Father Mosher officiating.
Burial will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin 2:30 p.m. today at Conway Funeral Home,
Riceville, with a 7 p.m. Scripture service.

William Virgil Buck was born on Oct. 29, 1908 in Fort Dodge
to William Buck and Lillian Buck (nee) Rafferty.

He was united in marriage to Mary Catherine Jarosh on Sept.
12, 1933, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.

He was a World War II veteran.

He was an electrician for many years. He then moved to a farm
near Riceville where he farmed until his retirement in 1973,
moving into Riceville.

His hobbies were wintering in Missouri and  fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Osage; one son, William C. Buck 
of Osage; one daughter, Rosemary Veech and her husband,
David of Mason City; one grandson, David E. Veech and his wife,
Gidget of Manly; one granddaughter, Michele Olson and her husband,
Troy of Peterson, Iowa; two great-grandchildren, Joshua David
Veech and Hunter Mychael Veech of Manly; one brother, Raymond 
and his wife, Mary of Portland, Iowa; one sister, Daisy Brown
and her husband, Clifford, of Highland, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clyde;
four sisters, Grace Patterson, Eva Wherman, Ruth Smith and 
Margaret Meehan; one grandson, Michael Veech and one 
granddaughter, Katherine Ann Veech.

Hugh Rolland "Ron" Magner
MASON CITY  

     Hugh ``Ron'' Rolland Magner, 69, of 625 Third St. N.E., died
Sunday (Sept. 3, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East,
Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist
Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Ronald Stein officiating. Military
rites will be conducted by the Northwood VFW #6779. Interment
will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Fullerton-Patterson
James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.

to the Hugh (Ron) Magner memorial fund.

Hugh (Ron) was born Dec. 14, 1925 to Hugh A. Magner and 
Dorothy Magner (nee) Moore in Mason City.  He was baptized 
at the First Baptist Church in Mason City on April 13, 1938.

He attended Mason City High School and served his country in
the United States Marine Corps from February of 1944 to May of
1946, serving as a corporal in the Pacific.

Hugh (Ron) married Maxine Sprung on Feb. 16, 1947 in Sheffield,
Iowa. 

He worked in plumbing and heating for many years and owned and
operated Ron's Plumbing and Heating in Northwood for 10 years,
retiring in 1984 due to health problems.

Hugh (Ron) was a member of the Northwood Fire Department and
the Rescue Squad for several years. He was a founding member
of the Northwood Baptist Church and a past commander of the Northwood
VFW #6779.

Hugh's (Ron's) hobbies included home and mechanical repairs,
fishing, and helping others.

He loved and enjoyed his family and grandchildren.

Hugh (Ron) is survived by his loving wife, Maxine, of Mason
City; four daughters, Maureen Magner of Mason City, Mrs. 
Tom (Phyllis) Kendall of Boone, Mrs. Larry (Jeannie) Parcher 
of Mason City, and Kathleen Helgeson of Northwood; six grandchildren,
Todd Kendall and his wife, Kristen of Ames, Scott Kendall of
Boone, Laurie Parcher and Bradley Parcher of Mason City, and
Lisa Helgeson and Michael Helgeson of Northwood; two brothers,
John Magner and Earl Strait, both of Mason City; and two sisters,
Ethel Magner of Mason City, and Deloris Stromley of Brunswick,
Ga.; one aunt, Shirley Bilstad of Mason City and several nieces
and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one granddaughter,

Helen Anna Davis
CLEAR LAKE 

     Helen Anna Davis, 88, of 410 Third Ave. N., Clear Lake, died
Monday (Sept. 4, 1995) at the IOOF Home, Mason City.
 
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United
Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.
Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.

The family suggests memorials to the United Methodist Church
in her memory.

Helen was born May 20, 1907 near Eureka, Ill., the daughter
of Edward Renz and Anna Renz (nee) Hamilton.

The family moved to Pierre, S.D., for three years, then traveled
to Clear Lake.

She received her education in Clear Lake, graduating in 1925.
She then attended college in Boulder, Colo., studying home economics.

She married Clair Davis on July 14, 1929, in Clear Lake. The
couple lived in Mason City for a short time, where Clair was
a member of the police force. She helped Clair to operate a peanut
vending machine business over a 50-mile radius for several years
before starting a family.

She was co-owner of the Tot-To-Teen Shop in Clear Lake from
1951-56 with Francis Miller.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake
and helped with the Sunday school programs there for 43 years.
She was also a member of the Sorosis Club.

She is survived by a son, Jerry Davis, of Clear Lake; a daughter,
Judy Lincicum and her husband, Clayton. of Clear Lake; six grandchildren,
Dawn Ann Theilen and her husband, Tim, of Clear Lake; Dan Lincicum
of Clear Lake; Daren Lincicum of Fertile; Wendy Lincicum of Des
Moines; Dawn Marie Chadrick of Clear Lake, and Jennifer Davis
of Des Moines; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clair, in
1979; a sister, Thelma Ratkovich; two half-brothers, 
Vernon and Harold Richardson; and one great-granddaughter, 
Abby Marie Theilen.

Lee Ann Harless
CHARLES CITY 

     Lee Ann Harless, 49, 2609 195th St., Charles City, died Monday
(Sept. 5, 1995) at her residence following a 10-year battle with
cancer.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Messiah
Lutheran Church, 705 Third Ave., Charles City, with the Rev.
Curt L. Schneider officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday
in Northlawn Cemetery, Iowa Falls.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at Fullerton Hage
Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, where the family will
receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be further visitation
one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Mrs. Harless, the former Lee Ann (nee) Jacobson, was born April 3,
1946, in Ames, the daughter of Oswald J. Jacobson and 
Irma R. (nee) Blome Jacobson.

She was raised in Iowa Falls and graduated from Iowa Falls
High School in 1964.

She then received her Associate's Degree from Ellsworth Community
College, Iowa Falls.

She then attended the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls.

On Aug. 27, 1967, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, she
married Darrell Dean Harless. The couple made their home in Charles
City.

Lee Ann commuted to the University of Northern Iowa and received
her B.A. in Spanish in 1968.

That following fall, Lee Ann started her teaching career at
New Hampton Community High School as the Spanish instructor.
She taught there for 27 years, and continued to hold that position
at the time of her death.

Lee Ann was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, where she taught
Sunday school and Bible school. For many years, she was also
one of the organists for the church.

She was a member of the Iowa State Teachers Association, the
National Education Association and the Iowa Foreign Language
Association.

She belonged to the National Honor Society in high school at
Iowa Falls, and was the faculty sponsor for the National Honor
Society at New Hampton High School. This past year, she was made
an honorary member of the New Hampton Honor Society.

She was also the faculty sponsor for the Spanish Club at the
high school. Every other year, she would take the students on
a trip to Mexico.

Next to her family, teaching was the love of Lee Ann's life.
She dedicated herself to education even throughout her illness.

Living family members include her husband, Darrell of Charles
City; two children, Matthew John Harless and Kristin Mary Harless, 
both at home in Charles City; her parents, Oswald and Irma Jacobson 
of Iowa Falls; a sister, Mary Jane Jacobson of Iowa Falls; and her 
father-in-law, Gayle Harless of Iowa Falls.

     Selma ``Sally'' Wiltse, 75, died Monday (Sept. 4, 1995) at
Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hauser Funeral
Home with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag of St. John Evangelical Lutheran
Church officiating.  Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

at 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home.

Selma Louise ``Sally'' Osten Wiltse was born Feb. 24, 1920,
in Minneapolis, Minn.

Survivors include three sons, Michael Gorden of St. Paul, Minn.;
David Gorden of Apple Valley, Minn., and Richard Gorden of Des
Moines; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Judith Ruth Johnson
Judith Ruth Johnson (nee) Ceder
KLEMME 

     Judith Ruth Johnson, 72, of Klemme, died Sunday (Sept. 3, 1995)
at St.  Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., where she had participated
in a research program for cardiomyopathy the past few years.  Funeral 
services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist 
Church, with the Rev. Jerry Robertson officiating.  Inurnment will 
be in the Ell Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral
Home.

Memorials may be given to the family of Judith Johnson or to
the United Methodist Church handbell fund.

Judith Ruth (Ceder) Johnson, the daughter of John Albert Ceder and
Florence Mabel Ceder (nee) Oleson, was born June 10, 1923, at Algona.

She graduated from Lake Township Humboldt County grade school
and Renwick Community High School and graduated in 1941.

She attended Simpson College in Indianola, and American Institute
of Business in Des Moines.

She worked at the Ankeny Ordnance Plant and at Beatrice Foods
in Des Moines, auditing books for the salesman.

On Dec. 28, 1944, she was united in marriage to Corporal 
Robert Clarence Johnson at the home of her parents at Humboldt. While
Bob was in the service on Guam, she returned to work at Beatrice
Foods.

Bob and Judy made their home in Renwick, where two children
were born, Margaret Ann and Marlin Alan. They  moved to Klemme
in 1952, where they engaged in farming. Judy enjoyed raising
chickens, gardening and raising her children. 

They retired from the farm and ran the Klemme ``66'' Service
Station.

For many years, Judy served as director of Happy Arc in Garner.
She was a 4-H leader, Cub Scout leader, Sunday school superintendent,
member of Klemme United Methodist Women, Miriam Circle, American
Legion Auxiliary, one of the original members of the Klemme Methodist
Handbell Choir and served on many committees of the church.

She was a tireless volunteer, enjoyed caring for her grandchildren
and going to their activities. 

She enjoyed golf, cross-stitch, quilting, caring for flower
beds, handbells, traveling, and played the role of Mrs. Soames
in the play,``Our Town,'' for Klemme's centennial.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Robert, of Klemme;
daughter, Margaret Tue and her husband, Mark, of Klemme; son,
Marlin Johnson of Klemme; grandchildren, Miekka Katter, a student
at NIACC; John Katter of Klemme; Morgan Tue of Klemme; Eric
Johnson and his wife, Shawna, of Des Moines; and Michael Johnson
of Klemme; stepgrandson, Drew Nelson of Monroe; great-granddaughter,
Kayla Johnson of Des Moines; longtime friend, Rita Mae Rossman;
and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Margaret,
Lillian, and Ruby Ann; and a grandson, Marlin Jr.

     Bertha  (Mrs. John) Kraft, 89, of 1407 Clark St., died Monday
(Sept. 4, 1995) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. at St. John Evangelical
Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial
will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Hauser Funeral
Home, 1205 S. Main St., and one hour prior to services at the
church.

Bertha Hermina Janssen Kraft was born Dec. 23, 1905, near Benson,
Ill.

Survivors include four sons, Marvin Kraft of Waverly; Richard Kraft
of Clarksville; John ``Merlin'' Kraft of Dixon, Mo., and Kenneth Kraft
of Ionia; three daughters, Helen Knapp of Charles City, Beverly Winkie 
of Belle Plaine and Shirley Day of Ionia; two sisters, 
Jennie Bouillion of Ionia and Ida McNealy of Hampton; 
30 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son,

Rev. David Merwin
ALOHA, Ore.

     The Rev. David Merwin, 63, of Aloha, formerly of Clear Lake,
Iowa, died Tuesday (Aug. 29, 1995) at St. Vincent's Hosptial,
Portland.  Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 5.

David Merwin was born May 15, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa, the
son of the Rev. and Mrs. Chauncey Merwin.

He served in the United States Army in Korea, and later went
back to Korea to minister as a missionary for many years. Upon
returning to the United States, he pastored churches in Evansville,
Ind., and Portland.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Merwin of Aloha; two daughters, Stephanie
and her husband, Darrald Fast of Portland and Sarah and her husband,
Michael Miller of Franklin, Tenn.; four grandchildren; four brothers,
Arthur Merwin and his wife, Mabel, of Clear Lake, Iowa; Jim Merwin
of Clear Lake, Iowa; Ralph Merwin and his wife, Helen, of Franklin,
Tenn., and Paul Merwin and his wife, Tillie, of McKenzie, Tenn.;
nine sisters, Helen Anderson of Clear Lake, Iowa; Kit and her
husband, Stanley Zirbel, of Fertile, Iowa; Jane and her husband,
Jim Levisay of Ponca, Neb.; Ruth and her husband, Dick Hill of
Clear Lake, Iowa; Doris and her husband, Johnny Bowman of Jackson,
Tenn.; Carol May and her husband, E.C. Wilson of Jackson, Tenn.;
Althea McClendon of Henderson, Tenn.; Sara and her husband, Ed Lyon 
of Memphis, Tenn., and Pauline and her husband, Sam Milam
of Paducah, Ky.

He will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews and friends
in both the United States and Korea.

The family is grateful that his life was an example of God's
love being shown to others.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

     W. Howard Raney, 76, of Algona, died Monday (Sept. 4, 1995)
at Kossuth County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran
Church, with the Rev. Steve Turner and the Rev. Douglas Hoag
officiating. Burial will be at 10:15 a.m. at Laurel Hill Cemetery,
Irvington, with graveside military honors by the VFW and the
American Legion of Algona.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf
Funeral Home, Algona.

Willis Howard Raney was born Aug. 1, 1919, in Algona.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Raney of Algona; one daughter,
Linda Parsons of Algona; one son, Howard M. Raney of Algona;
seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Buena Potter of Emmetsburg
and Norma Walker of Algona.

MASON CITY 

     Deloris Bryant Drilen, 37, passed away on Friday (Sept. 1,
1995) at the Regional Hospital in Trondheim, Norway.
     
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday (Sept. 8, 1995)
at the Church of Jossund in Bjugn, Norway, where she had lived
for the past year and a half.

Deloris, the daughter of Dennis and Dolly Bryant of Mason City,
was born March 11, 1958, at Osage.

She lived on the Bryant family farm at Charles City until she
was 3 years old.

The family then moved to Belmond,  where she spent the next
17 years.

She then moved to the Bryant family farm at Mason City with
her son, Justin Barkema.

Her many loves and interests in life were her children, the
heritage of her family, exploring nature, art, music and photography.

On March 21, 1991, she was married in Clear Lake to Erik Drilen
from Trondheim, Norway.

They lived in North Iowa for about 2 years, then moved to Norway.
This was the happiest time of her life even though she was fighting
the battle of her life with cancer.

Deloris is survived by her husband, Erik, her daughters, Michelle
and Kristen of Bjugn, Norway; her son, Justin Barkema of Mason
City; her parents, Dennis and Dolly Bryant of Mason City; her
brother, David of Mason City; her brother Dale and his wife,
Lucinda of Huxley; her grandfather, Ralph Bryant of Charles City;
her grandmother, Daisy Ellis of Britt; her uncle, Seth Bryant
and his wife, Margaret ,of Charles City; her uncle, Jerry Bryant
and his wife, Vi, of Monticello, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Marjory Bryant;
her grandfather, Clarence Paulson; her aunt, Jean Bryant; her
great-aunt and uncle, Helen and Jule Thompson.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at
St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City.

     James P. Murphy, 79, of 504 Fourth St. S., Rockwell, died Tuesday
(Sept. 5, 1995) at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. today at the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church, Rockwell, with Father Steven J. Meyer
officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Church
Cemetery, Dougherty. Military rites will be conducted by the
American Legion, Clark Dougherty Post #354.

Visitation was held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Sacred Heart School
Chapel with the Sisters of the Presentation prayer service at
5 p.m. and a 7 p.m. Scripture wake service.

Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, Rockwell, is in charge
of arrangements.

James P. Murphy was born Jan. 11, 1916, to John Murphy and 
Rose Reilly Murphy in rural Dougherty.

He graduated from Rockwell High School in 1934, and served his
country in the United  States Navy during World War II.

He married Katherine Fitzpatrick on June 26, 1943, in San Pedro,
Calif.

They returned to Iowa in 1944 and he resided in the Dougherty
area until moving to Rockwell in 1992.

 He was employed by the Rockwell Farmer's Co-op, Armour's and
Cerro Gordo County.

James is survived by his wife, Katherine Murphy of Rockwell; three
sons, John Murphy of Bremerton, Wash., Jim Murphy of Cedar Rapids,
and Pat Murphy and his wife, Lori of Algona; three daughters,
Regina Duggan of Waterloo, Mary (Mrs. Duane) Lyons of Clarion
and Carolyn (Mrs. Ron) Englehardt of Harrisburg, Pa.; three brothers,
Walter Murphy of Rockwell, Edward Murphy and Francis Murphy,
both of Mason City; two sisters, Sister Mary Ellen of Algona,
and Sister Mauriece Dougherty of Dougherty; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, 
Vincent Eugene Murphy; two brothers, the Rev. Joseph Murphy 
and Vincent Murphy; and one sister, Mary Merfeld.

     Annie (Kantaris) Apostolu, 79, died Wednesday (Sept. 5, 1995).
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Assumption Greek
Orthodox Church at 21800 Marter Road, St. Clair Shores, Mich.,

Memorials may be made to the church or American Heart Association.

Annie was born Sept. 4, 1916, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter
of Demitrios Kantaris and Kallopie Kantaris, their first child to 
be born in the United States.  Annie lived in Mason City where she helped
her family work in the Mason City Laundry until she moved to
Michigan to marry her husband, the late Thomas Apostolu.

Survivors include her children, Helen (Mrs. Albert) Farrah,
Stella (Mrs.Dr. James) Sarcheck, Kathrine (Mrs.James) Mihail,
and John Apostolu, all of Detroit, Mich.; one brother, Gus J. Kantaris 
of Mason City, Iowa; five sisters, Stella Markos, Helen Sponduris, 
Irene Gazes, and Christina Klein, all of Mason City, Iowa; 
Mary Triantasillou of Michigan, and Elizabeth Armoskis
of Alameda, Calif.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren;
many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews; and many
other loving relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Apostolu; her
parents, Demitrios and Kallopie Kantaris; two brothers, Nick Kantaris
and George Kantaris; and two sisters, Bessie Hall Kantaris and

OSAGE 

     Jane Wallace, 101, died Wednesday (Sept. 6, 1995) at Faith
Home.  The body was cremated and there will be no services.  Graveside 
services will be held in Dearborn, Mich. at a later date. Champion 
Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jane Wallace was born March 10, 1894, near Little Cedar.

Survivors include Charles and Fern Hockens of Little Cedar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and eight
brothers and sisters.

Anthony `Tony' Joseph Siesseger
MASON CITY 

     Anthony ``Tony'' Joseph Siesseger, 76, of 15 Circle Terrace,
died Tuesday (Sept. 5, 1995) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit.
     
A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Holy Family
Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. John R. Kremer
officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery where
full military honors will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans
Memorial Association.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial
Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Scriptural prayer service
beginning at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be given to Holy Family Catholic Church or Hospice
of North Iowa in his memory.

Tony was born in Mason City on Aug. 22, 1919, the son of 
Viola (Etta) Campbell and Frederick W. Siesseger.

He graduated from Mason City High School in 1936, the University
of Northern Iowa in 1940, and received an M.S. Degree from Drake
University in 1950.

He served four years in the United States Marine Corps during
World War II, attaining the rank of captain. Shortly before leaving
for service in the South Pacific theater, he married 
Elizabeth "Betty" Justin on June 2, 1942.

Following the war, Tony began his career of 37 years as a public
school teacher and administrator. He began teaching social studies
in Roosevelt Junior High School and served as the department
chairman at Mason City High School for 18 years, until his retirement
in 1983.

Tony was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Parish
Council, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and VFW. His
avocations included reading, hunting and fishing, gardening and
cooking.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; three children, 
Frederic W. Siesseger and his wife, Sharon E. Hughes, of Burke, Va.; 
Anne Marie McNelly and her husband Jack, of Muscatine; and 
William J. Siesseger of Tacoma, Wash.; and six grandchildren, Marie E.
Siesseger of Burke, Va., Bryan J., Anthony D., and Meghan K.
McNelly, all of Muscatine, and Katherine K. and Mathew K. Siesseger,
both of Gate Harbor, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Marie
Randall, Margaret Burnett, Catherine Wolfe and Dorothy Tjornhom.

Melbourne `Mel' J. Trampel
ROCKWELL 

     Melbourne ``Mel'' J. Trampel, 59, of 11322 Killdeer, Rockwell,
died Tuesday (Sept. 5, 1995) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem
Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., Mason City, with the Rev.
Frederick J. Wood officiating. Interment will be in Memorial
Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial
Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E.

The family suggests memorials to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church
in his memory.

Mel was born May 5, 1936, in Klemme, the son of John P. Trampel 
and Minnie Trampel (nee) Beek.

He was baptized in the Immanuel Reformed Church, Klemme, and
confirmed in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City. Mel graduated
from Clear Lake High School in 1955.

Mel married Carol J. Kinne on Feb. 23, 1958, at Trinity Lutheran
Church, Algona. They lived on a farm near Rockwell for 13 years.
While farming, he also drove a milk truck for State Brand Creamery,
Mason City. 

In April of 1972 they moved to Fertile.  Mel went to work at
Winnebago Industries on the production assembly line where he
has continued to work.

They later moved to rural Clear Lake, Swaledale and then in
October of 1985 moved back to the family farm in rural Rockwell.

Mel loved wood working, working on the family farm, the animals
on the farm and most of all, he loved his grandchildren.

He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City.

Mel is survived by his wife, Carol Trampel of Rockwell; three
children, Debra Cummingham and her husband, Tom of Forest City;
Dan Trampel of Rockwell; and Darla Reed and her husband, Jim,
of Dougherty; two brothers, Ronald Trampel and his wife, Kay,
of Clear Lake, and Merlyn Trampel and his wife, Nylene, of Rockwell;
five grandchildren, Nickolas Cummingham, Jacob Cummingham, Joshua
Cummingham, Matthew Reed and Larry Trampel; and several nieces
and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and in-laws, Henry
O.E. and Lydia Kinne.

     Loretta Garber, 58, died Thursday (Sept. 7, 1995) at the Ninth
St. Chautauqua Guest Home.

Church officiating.  Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery,

Loretta Mae Sweet Garber was born May 7, 1937, in Iowa City.

Survivors include four sons, Dale Garber of Estherville, Dennis Garber
of Mason City, Douglas Garber of New Hampton, and David Garber of 
Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Linda Garber of Ohio; and one sister, 
Ruth Bankston of Fort Worth, Texas; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister.

Warren Lynn Stern
ROCKFORD 

     Warren Stern, 76, of 211 Seventh St. N.E., died Wednesday (Sept.
6, 1995) at Heritage Care Center, Mason City, following a lengthy
illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion
Lutheran Church with the Rev. John Albrecht officiating.  Burial
will be in the Sunnyside Memory Garden, Charles City.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the Schumberg Funeral
Home.

Warren Lynn Stern was born Feb. 22, 1919, at Taopi, Minn., to
William Stern and Vera McKee Stern.

He attended school at Taopi, Minn.  On July 3, 1938, he married
Lorna Carlson at Cresco.  He farmed in Minnesota, worked for
nine years at the Oliver Corp. in Charles City, and retired due
to severe arthritis in 1975 after 23 years at Armour Foods, Mason
City.

For many years he and Lorna enjoyed spending their summers fishing
on Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota.  His grandchildren and great-grandchildren
brought much enjoyment to his life.  He was a longtime member
of the Moose Lodge #1328 of Mason City.

He is survived by his wife, Lorna; two daughters, Leona and
her husband, Morris Parcher, and Diane and her husband, 
Lyle (Timm) Marker, and one son, Dale Stern and his wife, Jan, 
all of Rockford; seven grandchildren, Kenneth Parcher and 
Paul Parcher of Northwood, David Parcher from Navarre, Fla., 
Karen Parcher of Rockford, Leon Marker of Ramsey, Minn., and 
Troy Marker and Craig Marker of Rockford; and four 
great-grandchildren, Christopher Parcher, Cory and Curtis Marker 
and Lauren Parcher.

Also surviving is his brother, Donald Stern of Colorado Springs,
Colo,. and his sister, Emily Carlson of Litchfield, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William Stern
and Verl Stern, and a sister, Edythe Ulrick.

HOUSTON, Texas 

     Larry L. Manship, 58, of 6335 Cape Forward Drive, Houston,
Texas, 77083, passed away Wednesday (Sept. 6, 1995) due to cancer
at The Hospice of the Texas Medical Center.

United Methodist Church, 6856 Bellaire Blvd. with Dr. Charles
Greene officiating.  Inurnment will be at Riverside Cemetery,

He was a member of Gethsemane United Methodist Church, Houston.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Weber Manship; one son,

and mother-in-law, Amanda Van Slyke.

     Phyllis Knudtson, 64, died Tuesday (Sept. 5, 1995) at North
Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
          
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Church
of Christ in Fertile with Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.  Burial
will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery.

Visition was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Conner Colonial
Chapel, 99 11th St. S., and one hour prior to service time today
at the church.

Phyllis Joan Knudtson was born on Oct. 23, 1930, in Fertile,
the daughter of Edwin Ouverson and Helen Humphrey Ouverson.  She 
attended and received her education in the Fertile School system, 
graduating from Fertile High School in 1949.  She was united in marriage
to Truman Knudtson on June 6, 1949, at the Church of Christ in
Fertile.  After their marriage they lived in the Fertile area
until 1956, when they moved to Northwood.  Phyllis worked in
the Worth County Courthouse, Fallgatter's Grocery Store, and
Worth County Home Health Office, all in Northwood, and also helped
her husband Truman as bookkeeper in the Northwood Lumber Company.
She enjoyed sewing, crafts, decorating and flowers.

She was a member of the Church of Christ, Fertile.

Survivors include her husband, Truman Knudtson of Northwood;
two daughters, Tammy Overgaard and her husband, Jeff, of Nicollet,
Minn., and LuAnn Alexander and her husband, Bill, of Lafayette,
Minn.; two sons, Mark Knudtson and his wife, Connie, of Osage,
and Dan Knudtson and his wife, Lois, of Underwood, Minn.; 11
grandchildren, Kasey Overgaard, Rachael and Jenna Alexander,
Anne, Brian, Karl, John, Tom and Joe Knudtson, Matt and Jim Alexander;
one sister, Nelda Frahm and her husband, Larry of Charles City;
three brothers, Curtis Ouverson and his wife, Gwen, of Fertile;

     Dorothy D. Crumb, 91, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Wednesday

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Paul Boostrom

The family requests memorials in memory of Dorothy Crumb to
the First Christian Church.

Dorothy D. Crumb was born March 15, 1904, in Mason City to 
James H. ``Tod'' Ransom and Daisy Van Note Ransom.  Dorothy 
attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1921.  She 
then attended the University of Iowa.  Dorothy married 
Charles R. Crumb on Dec. 9, 1944, in Mason City.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, PEO Chapter
KW, and Daughters of American Revolution where she served as
a regent for a couple of years.

Survivors include one brother, Harley Ransom of Mason City;
two nephews, Dr. James H. Ransom and his wife, Marcia, of Topeka,
Kan., and Robert C. Ransom and his wife, Donna, of Mason City;
and several grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles
