Ruth L. Cunningham
CHARLES CITY 

     Ruth L. Cunningham, 75, of Charles City, died Wednesday (Oct.
17, 1995) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity
United Methodist Church with the Rev. John G. Bissett officiating.
 Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today at Fullerton
Hage Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to services
at the church on Saturday.

Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials
to the family.

Ruth Lena Cunningham was born July 13, 1920, in rural Nashua.

Survivors include her husband, Ed, of Charles City; three daughters,
Darlene Dralle of Clarksville; Lois Wright of Floyd, and
Linda Long of Libson; three sons, Roger Wright of Pueblo, Colo.;
Ronald Wright of Ames, and William `Bill' Wright of Jefferson; four
sisters, Ethel Brown of Charles City; Leona Morey of Greene;
Thelma Bronsema of Branson, Mo., and Pearl Cooper of Sumner;
35 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, one
son, one daughter, one brother and three sisters.

Hilda Schmalbeck
SHEFFIELD 

     Hilda Schmalbeck, 85, of Sheffield, died Thursday (Oct. 19,
1995) at Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zion-St.
John Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kent Meehler officiating.
 Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Grarup
Funeral Home.

Hilda Schmalbeck was born Oct. 6, 1910, in Latimer.

Survivors include two daughters, Alice Johnson of Evergreen,
Colo., and Ilene Noland of Sheffield; one son, Charles Schmalbeck
of Altoona; one sister, Lydia Stratman of Latimer; five grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one grandchild
and two brothers.

The Rev. Lawrence Carlton
CLEAR LAKE 

     The Rev. Lawrence Carlton, 86, of 2509 South Shore Drive, died
Thursday (Oct. 19, 1995) at Oakwood Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist
Church  with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. The body will be
cremated and burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery at a later
date.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.

 The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial contribution
do so in his name.

Lawrence Carlton was born April 14, 1909, at St. Francis, Kan.
He graduated from Beloit, Kan., High School in 1927.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Fort
Hays Kansas State College in 1932, and took his seminary work
at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colo.

He was licensed to preach in 1936, following which he served
as pastor of several small churches in northwestern Kansas.

He was ordained a deacon in 1939 and ordained an elder in 1943
while serving as the pastor of the Logan/Prairie View church
in Kansas.

On Aug. 30, 1943, he was united in marriage to Beulah Barron
in Coraopolis, Pa.  She was born and reared in southwestern Pennsylvania,
and they had met in 1940, while she and his sister, Harriet,
were classmates at the National College for Christian Workers
in Kansas City, Mo.

In June of 1944, they had their first child, Nancy.

In September of 1944, he was appointed to the Cunningham/Cairo
church in southern Kansas, where he served for three years. The
Cairo church had burned down, and he enjoyed the challenge of
helping that small congregation build a new structure.

 In August of 1945, they had their second child, James.

In 1947, he met with the bishop of the Iowa Area of the United
Methodist Church and was invited to join that conference, becoming
the director of youth activities for the state, a position he
held for two years.

Following that appointment, he served as pastor of the following
United Methodist Churches: Riverside, Sioux City (1947-1957);
associate pastor of St. John's, Davenport (1957-1967); Central,
Charles City (1967-1969); West Liberty (1969-1975), from which
he retired in June of 1975.

For the next seven years, he served as the minister of visitation
for First United Methodist Church, Iowa City. During that time
he did significant work with the university students who were
affiliated with the church, and also was instrumental in the
establishment of an outstanding senior citizen's center in downtown
Iowa City.

Throughout his active years, he was an enthusiastic member of
many civic and service organizations, ministerial associations,
and was always actively involved in working for the improvement
of whatever community he was a part.

His great loves were his God, the Word of God in his beloved
Bible, his church, his family and home and his many relatives
and friends.

He had a unique rapport with children and youth, possessing
a kind, loving attitude, and a wonderful sense of humor.

He was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Beulah of Clear Lake; and two children,
a daughter, Nancy Plorins and her husband, Ziedonis (Zeke) of
Clear Lake; and their children, James Plorins and his wife, Diana
of Ames, and David Plorins and his wife, Tracey and their son,
Matthew, of Cedar Falls; James Carlton and his wife, Trudy, of
Omaha, Neb.; five sisters, Zelfa Neill of Dallas, Texas;
Harriet Casey of Sulphur Springs, Texas; Naomi Carter and
Rachel Carter, both of Jennings, Kan., and Mary Smith of Sharon Springs,
Kan.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother; and
three brothers, Arlyn, Glen and James.

Jerry A. Olthoff
MASON CITY 

Jerry A. Olthoff, 59, of 19745 220th St., died Thursday (Oct.
19, 1995) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian
Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive, with the Rev. Lois Swanson officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to
services at the church on Monday.

Memorials may be given to the Jerry A. Olthoff Memorial Fund.

Jerry A. Olthoff was born June 2, 1936, in rural Woden, Hancock
County, the son of John Olthoff and Fannie (nee) Schutjer Olthoff.

Jerry was baptized and confirmed in the Woden Presbyterian Church
in Woden. He graduated from Woden High School in 1954.

He served in the United States Army from 1959-61.

He was united in marriage to Karen J. Sillman on Aug. 25, 1961,
in Britt.

They moved to Mason City in 1961 where Jerry and his father
owned and operated Jack and Jerry's Shell Service Station on
South Federal for 18 years.

Jerry was most recently employed by Bauer Built Tire and Service
Center, Mason City.

Jerry was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Karen J. Olthoff of Mason City;
daughters, Carol M. Djuren and her husband, Dave, of Mason City,
and Carrie S. Hughes of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Travis,
Jason, Crystal, Norris, Candice, Jamar  and Tyrrell; one sister,
Mary Ann Valen of Story City; and one sister-in-law, Judy Olthoff
of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son in infancy,
Duane; and one brother, Terry.

Michael Edward Sheridan
CLEAR LAKE 

     Michael Edward Sheridan, 54, of 2700 N. Shore Drive,  died
Friday (Oct. 20, 1995) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church, with Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating.

Burial will be at Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Lawler. A
graveside service will be held at 3:15 p.m. Monday with Father
David Pepper officiating.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.,  with a Scriptural wake service at
7 p.m.

Mike was born Nov. 3, 1940, at St. Joseph Hospital in New Hampton,
the son of Edward J. Sheridan and Virginia (nee) McAloon Sheridan.

He graduated from Lawler High School in 1958 and from Hamilton
Business College in Mason City in 1960 with a degree in accounting.

He married Beatrice Sabelka on Aug. 11, 1962, at St. Wenceslaus
Catholic Church in Spillville.

The couple moved to Clear Lake in 1965. He owned and operated
Michael Sheridan Accounting in Clear Lake.

He was a past president of the Clear Lake Jaycees, a state Jaycee
senator and past chairman of the Cerro Gordo County Democrats.

He loved classic convertibles, golf and enjoyed watching all
sports.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake,
St. Patrick's Knights of Columbus and the Elks Club of Mason
City.

He is survived by his mother, Virginia Sheridan of Lawler; three
children, Todd Sheridan and Chad Sheridan of Des Moines; and
Jill Sheridan
of Cedar Falls; two sisters, Claire Upham and her husband, Richard,
of Madison, Wis.; and Ann Morse and her husband, Gil, of Santa
Cruze, Calif.; and three brothers, Patrick Sheridan and his wife,
Janet, of Lawler; William Sheridan and his wife, Renee, of Urbandale,
and Thomas Sheridan and his wife, Eleni, of the Netherlands.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a daughter,
Theresa Sheridan.

Lois Peterson Horton
BRADENTON, Fla.  

     Lois Peterson Horton, 95, of Bradenton, died Wednesday (Oct.
18, 1995) at IHS in Brandenton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Christ United
Methodist Church, 5512 26th St. West, Brandenton, with the Rev.
Robert Waddell officiating.  Burial will be in the Manasota Memorial
Crematory.

Visitation will be one hour before services at the Christ United
Methodist Church.

Manasota Memorial Funeral Home, 1221 53rd Ave. E., Bradenton,
is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Wesley United Methodist Church,
1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, Iowa 50401 and the Organ
Endowment Fund, First Presidential Church of The Covenant, 250
W. Seventh St., Erie, Pa. 16501.

She was born in Bardwell, Ky.

She was a graduate of Brenau College in Gainsville, Ga., with
a BA degree in music and drama. She taught at Brenau Collage
for two years and then at Vincennes University. She was a member
of tbhe College Sorority Alpha Chi Omega, honorary drama sorority
Zeta Phi Eta, honorary music sorority Mu Phi Epsilon.

She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church.

She directed church choirs in Mason City, Iowa, in Bradenton
and other choirs and glee clubs.

She is survived by a daughter, Ann Peterson Kloss of Erie, Pa.

Kathryn E. Hanson
CLEAR LAKE 

     Kathryn E. Hanson, 79, of 4835 Roseman Drive, Clear Lake, died
Saturday (Oct. 21, 1995) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cataldo
Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner, with Larry Gilbert
officiating.  Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery, Garner.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral
chapel.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa in memory of
Kathryn Hanson.

Kathryn Elizabeth Hanson, the daughter of William Gilbert and
Edith Gilbert (nee) Pike was born July 31, 1916, in Garner.  She 
graduated from Garner High School in 1934.  On Nov. 21, 1936, she was 
united in marriage to J.C. "Clay" Hanson in Long Beach, Calif.  
The couple made their home in Long Beach where they raised their
family.  Kathryn received her bachelor of arts degree in English
from CAL State 1960.  In 1974, they moved to Clear Lake.

She was a field director with the Long Beach Girl Scouts from
1960-74.  She was also a contributing member of Clear Lake Library,
MacNider Art Museum,  and the Nature Conservatory.

She is survived by her husband, J.C. ``Clay'' Hanson of Clear
Lake; a daughter, Ann Hanson, Downey, Calif.; a son, Pete Hanson,
Colfax, Calif.; a sister, Amy Ross and her husband, James, Riverside,
Calif.; a brother, William Gilbert and his wife, Delores, Garner;
a sister-in-law, Florence Gilbert, Loveland, Colo.; and many
nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother,
Warren K. Gilbert.

Vera June Jorgensen
HAMPTON  

     Vera June Jorgensen, 84, of rural Hampton, died Friday (Oct.
20, 1995) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. John's
Lutheran Church, rural Hampton, with the Rev. Mark Urlarb officiating.
 Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home, Hampton.

Vera June Jorgensen was born June 4, 1911, in Popejoy.

Survivors include her husband, James (Sr.) Jorgensen, rural Hampton;
one daughter, Joyce Piechowski, Bettendorf; two sons, James Jorgensen
Jr., rural Hampton, and Marlyn Jorgensen, Garrison; two sisters,
Ruby Anderson, Dows, and Carol Cave, Des Moines; one brother,
Wendell Benson, Iowa Falls; and 11 grandchildren and 11 
great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Evelyn Simpson
MANLY 

     Evelyn Simpson,79, of Manly, died Saturday (Oct. 21, 1995)
at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 1995,
at Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly, with the Rev. James
Paulsen officiating.  Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Bride Colonial Chapel,
110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to service time
Tuesday at the church.

Evelyn Simpson was born March 30, 1916, in Lakeland, Fla., the
daughter of Lloyd A. Scott and Fanny Jane (nee) Roam Scott.  When 
Evelyn was four, the family moved back to Mountain Grove, Mo., where
both sets of grandparents lived.  She attended and received her
grade school education in the Mountain Grove School System, moving
to Manly when she was 17.  She attended and received her education
in the Manly High School where she played piano and viola in
high school, graduating from Manly High School.  She was united
in marriage to Howard Simpson on March 28, 1938, in Iowa Falls.

They were married for 48 years until his death in 1986.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and Heather
Hills O.E.S., both in Manly.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and fishing, but her great love
and enjoyment was her grandchildren and their extra curricular
activities in school.

She is survived by her mother, Fanny Jane Painter of the Lutheran
Retirement Home, Northwood; one son, William and his wife, Sharon
Simpson, Kensett; two granddaughters, Susan Easley and her husband,
Fred, Northwood, and Debra Welser, Mason City; one grandson,
Joshua Simpson, Kensett; one great-grandson, Zachery Brown, Mason
City; one sister, Eva D. Gavin, Tucson, Ariz.; one brother,
John Scott, Mason City; as well as other relatives and friends.

Beside her husband, she was also preceded in death by her father,
Lloyd A. Scott.

George D. Coyan
MASON CITY 

     George D. Coyan, 70, of 208 S. Kentucky Ave., died Friday (Oct.
20, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center east.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at noon Monday at St.
Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Carl
Ries officiating.  Following the services, the body will be donated
to the University of Osteopathic Medicine, Des Moines.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a scriptural wake
service at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the George D. Coyan Memorial Fund.

George D. Coyan was born Aug. 15, 1925, in Council Bluffs, the
son of George Coyan and Dorothy (nee) Zehr Coyan.  He graduated from
Benson High School, Omaha, Neb., then went on to earn his bachelor and
masters degrees at the University of Nebraska, Omaha.  He married
Noreen Connell on Aug. 13, 1958, in Storm Lake.  He taught American
history and sociology at North Iowa Area Community College for
over 30 years, retiring in 1990.  He was a veteran of World War
II and served in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was an avid runner and golfer and a member of St. Joseph's
Catholic Church, and a member of the Y.M.C.A. where he currently
served on the board of directors.

Survivors include his wife, Noreen Coyan, Mason City; one daughter,
Candice Finnelly and husband, Ross, Lemont, Ill.; two sons,
Greg Coyan and wife, Sue, White Bear Lake, Minn., and Rodney Coyan
and wife, Jacque, Littleton, Colo.; six grandchildren, Tyler,
Paul, Jack, Sarah, Anne and Molly; and two brothers, Ron Coyan,
Omaha, Neb., and Pat Coyan, San Antonio, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Maybelle E. Wood
MASON CITY  

     Maybelle E. Wood, 89, of San Angelo, Texas, formerly of Mason
City, died Wednesday (Oct. 18, 1995) at home in San Angelo.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer
Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Merlin Ackerson
of First United Methodist Church officiating.  Burial will be
in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services Monday
at the funeral chapel.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation
to Hospice of San Angelo for their wonderful care this past year
and would like to request any memorials may be made to Hospice
of San Angelo, 16A East Beauregard, San Angelo, Texas 76901,
in memory of Maybelle E. Wood.

Maybelle Wood was born May 14, 1906, near Hutchins, the daughter
of Lewis N. Thompson and Margaret M. Thompson (nee) Stevenson.  
She married Ezra Wood on Aug. 6, 1924, in Britt.  She and her 
husband lived in Iowa most of their married life until moving to 
Sweetwater, Texas, in 1976, then to San Angelo, Texas, in 1979.

Survivors include one son, Stanley E. Wood and his wife, Lucille,
San Angelo, Texas; four daughters, Ila May Rooks and her husband,
Howard, Marion, Beryle Lou Williams and her husband, William,
Estes Park, Colo., Donna Belle Hall and her husband, Ervin, and
Peggy Rose Briggs, all of San Angelo, Texas; one brother,
Dale Thompson, St. Ansgar; 21 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren,
and one great-great-granddaughter.

Eugene Allen Riley
MANLY  

     Eugene Allen Riley, 65, of Manly, died Friday (Oct. 20, 1995)
at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel
United Methodist Church, Manly, with the Rev. James Poulsen officiating.
Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery with military graveside
honors by the Edward-Tosel American Legion Post 110 of Manly.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bride Colonial
Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to service
time Wednesday at the church.

Eugene Allen Riley was born Feb. 17, 1930, in Mt. Auburn, the
son of William Riley and Nellie (nee) Westcott Riley.  He 
received his education in the Cedar Rapids schools.  After completing 
his formal education, he worked for Link-Belt Speeder Manufacturing
Co. in Cedar Rapids.  On Jan. 24, 1952, he was inducted into
the U.S. Army, serving with Company C, 724th Railway Operating
Battalion, in the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge
on Jan. 8, 1954.

After his honorable discharge, he worked for the Rock Island
Railroad as a fireman, brakeman and then as a conductor until
his retirement in 1980.  The family moved to Manly in 1959. 
He was united in marriage to Lester ``Joni'' Dunham on April
1, 1955, in Bossier City, La.

He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.  He was a member of Edward-Tosel
American Legion Post 110, Manly, and the United Transportaion
Union.

He is survived by his wife, Joni Riley of Manly; two daughters,
Shawn Riley, Troy Mills, and Carol Schexsnayder, Gonzales, La.;
one son, Nathan Allen Koeppen and his wife, Janie Marie, Lake
Mills; his parents, William and Nellie Riley, Cedar Rapids; a
foster son, Jose ``Joey'' Adame, Manly; six grandchildren, Henry,
Ryan and Samuel Schexsnayder and Nicholas, Nicole and Jacob Koeppen;
four brothers, Francis Riley, Harold Riley, Richard Riley
and Billy Riley; as well as other relatives and friends.

CHARLES CITY  

     Donald W. Meineke, 71, of Charles City, died Friday (Oct. 20,
1995) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Messiah
Lutheran Church, 705 Third Ave., Charles City, with the Rev.
Kurt Schneider officiating.  Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Fullerton Hage
Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St.,  with the family receiving friends
from 7 to 9 p.m.  Visitation will continue for one hour prior
to service time Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be given to Messiah Lutheran Church or Heart To
Home Hospice.

Donald William Meineke was born Oct. 7, 1924, in rural Charles
City.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Meineke, Charles City; one
daughter, Tamara ``Tammy'' Elliott, Charles City; one sister,
Marlise Nott, Charles City; one brother, Virgil Meineke, Charles
City; and two stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

     Harold Bowman, 89, of Forest City, died Sunday (Oct. 22, 1995)
at the Good Samaritan Center.

Beatrice (Kelly) Mennenga
Beatrice (nee) Kelly
NEW YORK, N.Y. 

     Beatrice (Kelly) Mennenga, 61, of New York, N.Y., died September
28, 1995, in New York.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel
Reformed Church, rural Belmond, Iowa, with the Rev. Victor Folkert
officiating.  Inurnment will be in the church cemetery.

Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, is in charge of the arrangements.

Beatrice was born Feb. 9, 1934, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter
of Beatrice and Douglas Kelly.  She attended school in Queens,
N.Y., and received her bachelors degree from McGill University,
Montreal, Canada.  She was united in marriage to Curtis Mennenga
at Hamilton Air Force Base, San Rafael, Calif., on June 25, 1957.

Her career includes being a stewardess for Pan American Airlines,
advertising copy writer in Cleveland, Ohio, and New York, and
motivational research in New York. She was involved in marketing
and the  MBNA Program at Pace University Business School in New
York.  She retired in March 1994.

She is survived by her husband, Curtis, of  New York.

She was preceded in death by her parents,  of New York.

WEST BEND  

     Ruth A. McGuire, 69, of West Bend, died Sunday (Oct. 22, 1995)
at Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph
Catholic Church, St. Joe, with the Rev. Paul Eisele officiating.
Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Visitation will begin 7 p.m. today at Wilson Funeral Home, Algona,
with a 7:30 p.m. parish rosary and 9 a.m. Wednesday with a 3
p.m. Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary and a 7:30 p.m.

Ruth A. McGuire was born Feb. 11, 1926, at LuVerne.

Survivors include her husband, William McGuire of West Bend;
three daughters, Victoria A. Ilczyn of Itasea, Ill.;
Jane A. Curry of Algona, and Barbara A. Laing of Van Wert, Ohio; three
sons, Thomas T. McGuire of Algona; Stephen T. McGuire and
Dennis T. McGuire, both of Dallas, Texas; nine grandchildren; two sisters,
Delores Kramer, Algona, and Edna Reding of Livermore; and two
brothers, Leonard Youngwirth of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and
Victor Youngwirth of Sherborne, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandchild and
two sisters.

J. Wess Gochenouer
ALGONA  

     J. Wess Gochenouer, 80, of Algona, died Sunday (Oct. 22, 1995)
at home.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First
United Methodist Church, Algona.

 Burial will be at 1 p.m. in the Union Cemetery, Humboldt, with
a flag folding ceremony by the American Legion Posts of Algona
and Humboldt and the VFW Post of Algona.

Visitation will begin 3 p.m. today at Wilson Funeral Home, Algona,
and at the church after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

J. Wess Gochenouer was born Dec. 1, 1914, at Dakota City.

Survivors include his wife, Bea, of Algona; two daughters,
Connie Erpelding of Algona, and Bonnie Anderson of DeKalb, Ill.; two
sons, the Rev. James Gochenouer of Meservey and John Gochenouer
of Hollywood, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;
one sister, Anna Belle Caryl of Mediapolis; and two brothers
Calvin of Aurora, Colo., and George of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Harold Boman
FOREST CITY 

     Harold Boman, 89, of Forest City, died Sunday (Oct. 22, 1995)
at the Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday at the First
Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Fuller officiating. Burial
will be in the First Baptist Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Petersen Lund
Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the Pine Lake Christian Center in
his memory.

Harold Boman was born  Sept. 15, 1906, in Forest City.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Boman of Forest City; one daughter,
Sue Messer of Forest City; one son, Gerald Boman of Palm City,
Fla.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson;
and two brothers, Stanley and Milton Boman, both of Forest City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one grandson
and one sister.

Rex W. Elphic
KLEMME 

     Rex W. Elphic, 81, of Klemme, died Sunday (Oct. 22, 1995) as
a result of a two-car accident north of Meservey.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United
Methodist Church, Belmond,  with the Rev. Laurence Garrett officiating.
Burial, with military rites,  will be in the Ell Township Cemetery,
Klemme.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Tenold Funeral
Home, Belmond.

Rex W. Elphic was born Oct. 17, 1914, at Hampton.

Survivors include his fiance, Shirley Hawver; two daughters,
Pam Fliss and Lori Ersland, both of Belmond; sons, Jon Elphic
of Belmond, Larry Elphic of Des Moines, and Randy Elphic of Trabuco
Canyon, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and one sister, Marjorie Stonebreaker
of Lincoln, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and three sisters.

Maxine L. Dunton
ROCKWELL 

     Maxine L. Dunton, 78, of First Street North, Rockwell, passed
away Friday (Oct. 20, 1995) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit, Mason City, from complications of renal failure.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today at the Rockwell United
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Interment
will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery.

Visitation was held 2 p.m. on Monday at the Fullerton Funeral
Home, Rockwell.

Maxine was born on Dec. 31, 1916, near Rock Falls, the daughter
of James Hutzell and Glee (nee) Nicholas Hutzell.

She attended rural school and then the Rock Falls High School.

On Dec. 1, 1935, she was united in marriage to Leslie Dunton
in Albert Lea, Minn., and to this union were born two children.

Maxine was a caring adviser to the 4-H and other youth groups
as well as being a member of the United Methodist Church, the
United Methodist Women, Dougherty Domestic Club and a former
member of the ladies of the Moose.

She operated Maxine's Sundries and also helped her husband with
the farm work.

Her favorite activities were playing all types of card games
and attending all athletic, school and church activities her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren participated in.

Along with her daughter, Dixie and her husband, Bud Berger,
Rockwell; she will be sadly missed by her two sisters,
Virginia Calvert of Salinas, Calif., and Jean Morris of Clear Lake; two
brothers, Howard and his wife, Marlys Hutzell of Pisgah; and
Dean and his wife, Georgia Hutzell of Cornelius, Ore; three special
granddaughters, Deb and her husband, Greg Jones of Rockwell;
Tami and her husband, Loren Winfrey of Belmond, and Kristi and
her husband, John Murphy of Rockwell; one grandson, Bob Berger
of Mason City and his fiance, Ally Monson of Clear Lake; eight
great-grandchildren, Brent, Bradley and Bryon Jones, all of Rockwell;
Lucas, Tanner, Trevor, Colton, and Jace Winfrey of Belmond; and
many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband in February of 1974;
one infant son, David; her parents; and two brothers, Kenneth
and Donald ``Bud.''

Arthur `Art' Joseph Hovel
PLYMOUTH 

     Arthur ``Art'' Joseph Hovel, 75, of Plymouth, died Sunday (Oct.
22, 1995) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's
Catholic Church, Plymouth, with Father Thomas McAndrew officiating.
Burial will be in the Bohemian Cemetery, Plymouth.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial
Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with a  7 p.m. public Scriptural
rosary.

Arthur ``Art'' Joseph Hovel was born March 9, 1920, in Mason
City, the son of Edward Hovel and Rose (nee) Wise Hovel.

He attended and received his education in the Plymouth School
system, graduating from Plymouth High School in 1940.

After completing his education, he farmed on the family farm
near Plymouth for 25 years, moving to Plymouth in 1966 where
he worked as a maintenance man for the city of Plymouth until
his retirement in the mid-1980s.

He was united in marriage to Claretta Clark on Oct. 13, 1941,
at  Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly.

 While living in Plymouth he helped remove snow and plowed gardens
for area residents.

He enjoyed gardening and was actively involved in the community.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and was also
the custodian. He was a volunteer firefighter in Plymouth, a
member of the Boehmian Cemetery board and a member of the Manor
Retirement Board.

He is survived by his wife, Claretta Hovel of the Manly Care
Center; one daughter, Marjorie Huntley and her husband, Wayne,
of Rockwell; one son, Michael Hovel of Plymouth; five grandchildren,
Tracy Bolin and her husband, Joel of Marshalltown; Shawn Hovel
and his wife, Micky of Marshalltown; Melissa Dahl and her husband,
Dani, of Clear Lake; Mark Johnson and his wife, Konnie of Winona,
Minn., and Misty Hovel of Marshalltown; five great-grandchildren;
eight stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Leo Hovel and his
wife, Dorothy, and Reuben Hovel, all of Manly, as well as other
relatives and friends
