Gerald W. ``Pappy'' Good
MASON CITY  

Gerald W. ``Pappy'' Good, 82, of Regency Apartments, Mason City,
died Monday (Oct. 30, 1995) at home.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 5, 1995)
at the Brosh Funeral Home, 1107 Third St. S.E., Cedar Rapids,
with the Rev. Ron Connerly of the Noelridge Park Christian Church
officiating. Inurnment will be at Cedar Memorial Cemetery, Cedar
Rapids.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at
the funeral home in  Cedar Rapids.

Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., is in charge of 
arrangements.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to make donations
to heart research.

Pappy was  born on Sept. 10, 1913, at Bellaire, Ohio, the son
of Dave Good and Catherine (nee) Roach Good.

He attended school in Lufton.

He was united in marriage to Christine Phillips on April 19,
1938, in Calmar.

He was a crane operator during the war and for 30 years, he
operated a crane for E. Cohen and Son Construction.

While he could, Pappy loved to fish and hunt.

Gerald is survived by his son, Tom and his wife, Joan Good of
Mason City; two sister-in-laws, Francis Halverson of New Mexico,
and Martha Seabright of Rochester, Minn.; two granddaughters,
Mrs. Paul Lawana Rothamel of Coal Valley, Ill., and Lanee Good
of Mason City; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan Thomas and
Luarel Deann Rothamel.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine, on Dec. 27,
1981.

Vlasta `Flossie' Hejlik
GARNER  

Vlasta ``Flossie'' Hejlik, 76, of Garner, died Monday (Oct.
30, 1995) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Wenceslaus
Catholic Church in Duncan with the Rev. John W. Hemann, the Rev.
Marvin Bries, the Rev. Jerry Kopacek and Monsignor John Chihak
officiating.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral
Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner, with a 3 p.m. Rosary Society
rosary, a 7:30 p.m. Catholic Workman's rosary and an 8 p.m. Scriptural
wake service.

Vlasta ``Flossie'' Estella Hejlik, the daughter of Albert Psotka and
Anna (nee) Blaha Psotka, was born Oct. 17, 1919, on a farm south
of Duncan in Liberty Township.

She attended the rural schools of Liberty Township.

On Jan. 7, 1941, she was married to Ralph P. Hejlik at St. Wenceslaus
Catholic Church in Duncan. They farmed west of Garner on the
Hejlik home farm until 1975,  when they retired from active farming
and moved into Garner. As a young girl, she liked acting in Czech
plays.

She enjoyed her family rose garden, embroidering and cooking
for her family, especially Christmas nut rolls.

She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Rosary Society,
Catholic Workman's Society and the Garfield Hobby Club.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph P. Hejlik of Garner; nine
children, Gary Hejlik and his wife, Sally of Britt; Kenneth Hejlik
and his wife Charlotte of Britt; Audrey McEnany and her husband,
James, of Cedar Rapids; Lt. Col. Dennis Hejlik and his wife,
Sandra of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; Larry Hejlik and his wife, Cindy,
of Garner; Mary Best and her husband, Larry, of Garner;
Ralph Hejlik Jr. and his wife, Carolyn of West Des Moines;
Robert Hejlik and his wife, Deb. of Jacksonville, Ala.; and
Greg Hejlik and his wife, Mary of Quincy, Ill.; 31 grandchildren,
Cynthia Utley, Lori DeKruif, Donald Hejlik, Michelle Gjerde,
Mark Hejlik, P.O. Thomas Hejlik, Capt. Barbara Bohman,
Kevin Hejlik, Brian Hejlik, Andrew Hejlik, Christopher Hejlik,
Robert Busch, Tom Busch, Jill McEnany, Jennifer McEnany,
Jason D. Hejlik, Jill Hejlik, Jason L. Hejlik, Carrie Hejlik,
Jenna Hejlik, Ashley Hejlik, Lucas Hejlik, Michael Best,
Stacey Best, Kelly Hejlik, Emily Hejlik, Sara Hejlik,
Abby Hejlik, Melissa Hejlik, Nicole Hejlik and Eric Hejlik;
four great-grandchildren, Alysa Hejlik, Jacob Hejlik,
Mitchell DeKruif and Stephanie Hejlik; and two sisters,
Agnes Cole and her husband, William, of Chester, Mont., and
Helen Utt and her husband, James, of Colorado Springs, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, Greg Hejlik Jr.;
her parents; a sister, Mary Psotka; and two brothers;
Albert Vincent Psotka and Jerry Psotka.

Edith Meyer
ROCKWELL  

Edith Meyer, 101, died Monday (Oct. 30, 1995) at the Rockwell
Nursing Home.

A prayer service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton
Funeral Home, Rockwell, with graveside services immediately following.
The Rev. Joseph Miller will officiate.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the
funeral chapel. Visitation will continue after 8:30 a.m. Thursday
until time of the prayer services.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may choose to make
donations to St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Edith was born on May 10, 1894, near Thornton, the daughter
of George J. Meyer and Mathilda (nee) Nagel Meyer.

She moved to Rockwell in 1927 with her parents.

She was a longtime employee of the Farmers Cooperative Telephone
Company for over 30 years.

She moved to the Rockwell Nursing Home in 1979 and was the oldest
resident.

She was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid
Society, Senior Citizens and the Rockwell Cemetery Association.

She is survived by one niece, Arvilla Meyer Wood of Colorado
Springs, Colo.; two nephews, Milton Meyer of Sun Lakes, Ariz.,
and Marlo Meyer of Bentonville, Ark.; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, George
G., William and Fred, and one sister, Clara Meyer.

Kermit B. Hokel
HAMPTON  

Kermit B. Hokel, 82, of Hampton, died Monday (Oct. 30, 1995)
at the Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Church
of Christ, with the Rev. David Nelson officiating. Burial will
be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home.

Kermit B. Hokel was born Sept. 11, 1913, in Huxley.

Survivors include two sisters, Joan Meyer of Alden, and
Marietta Faller of Garden Grove, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers
and one sister.

Vernon LeRoy Paulson
HANLONTOWN 

 Vernon LeRoy Paulson, 79, of Hanlontown, died Saturday (Oct.
28, 1995) at the Rowley Masonic Nursing Home in Perry.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran
Church in Hanlontown with the Rev. Linda Johnson officiating.
Inurnment will take place at a later date at the Memorial Park
Cemetery, U.S. Highway 18 West, Mason City.

Family will greet friends from 1 p.m. Thursday until time of
services at the church.

The family of Vernon LeRoy Paulson has requested that memorial
contributions be made to the Rowley Masonic Nursing Home Bird
Aviary Fund in Perry,  in his memory.

Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, is in charge
of arrangements.

Vernon LeRoy Paulson was born on Oct. 8, 1916, at Crystal Lake,
the son of Leo Paulson and Gretta Paulson.

He attended school in Crystal Lake, Waldorf College in Forest
City, and Iowa State University in Ames.

He enlisted in the United States Army in January of 1941, and
was assigned to the 701st Tank Destroyer Battalion, and was 
stationed in Ireland, England and Africa during World War II.

He was taken prisoner of war by the Germans on Feb. 14, 1943.

He received the Silver Star for gallantry in action and was
liberated by the Russians on April 23, 1945.

He was honorably discharged as a captain in January of 1946.

He was united in marriage to Marcene Tilton on Nov. 23, 1946.

After their marriage together, they farmed for five years at
Crystal Lake. The couple bought a farm at Hanlontown in 1951,
and have lived there since.

Vernon served on several boards including the North Central
Community School Board for 13 years. He also served on the elevator
and co-op boards.

He loved farming, fishing and being of service to others.

He is survived by his wife, Marcene Tilton Paulson of Perry;
daughter, Marne Bateson and grandson, Aaron, of Rochester, Minn.,
son, Gary Paulson and his wife, Terry, and grandchildren, Amber,
Dawn, and Greg, of Denver, Iowa; daughter, Mileen Roe and her
husband, Bruce and grandson, Nick of Perry; three sisters,
Nodia Clemence of Coralville; Frances Faulstick and husband, Charles
of Hayward, Wis., and Fay Williamson of Jackson, Tenn.; plus
several nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Gretta Paulson.

Walter H. Christ
LAKOTA 

Walter H. Christ, 80, of Lakota, died Monday (Oct. 30, 1995)
at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul
Lutheran Church, Lakota, with the Rev. Harold Heupel officiating.
Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Winter Funeral
Home, Buffalo Center.  Visitation will continue one hour prior
to services at the church.

Walter Herman Christ, son of August Christ and Elsie (nee) Gollnow
Christ, was born on Sept. 2, 1915, on a farm east of Lakota.  He was
baptized on Oct. 3, 1915, by Pastor Sneider and his sponsors
were Leonhard Christ and Bertha Gollnow Mabus.  He was confirmed
on June 1, 1930, by the  Rev. Boese.  He attended country school
southwest of Lakota for eight years and worked on a farm until
entering the U.S. Army as an infantryman on April 3, 1942.  He
was stationed at Camp Barkley, Texas, with the 359th Infantry,
90th Division and in Fort Lee, N.J.  He served overseas from
1944-45 in Europe, and was wounded in combat in France in July
of 1944.  After being hospitalized he returned to active duty
and served under General Patton.  He received the Purple Heart,
Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal.  He was discharged on Oct.
30, 1945.

On Jan. 9, 1946, he married Leona Thaldene Brandt.  Together
they farmed east of Lakota until they retired and moved into
Lakota in August of 1976.

Walter was a 50-year member of the Lakota American Legion Post
#652, served on the Buffalo Center Creamery Board for several
years, was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he had
served on the church council and the cemetery board.

Walter is survived by his wife, Leona Christ of Lakota; his
son, Wallace and his wife, Marilyn Christ of Lakota; daughter
Arliss and her husband, John Hessig of Rochester, Minn.; six
grandchildren, Kristin, Kathleen and Karen Christ, James, Michael
and Danielle Hessig; one sister, Ella Addy of Forest City; one
brother, Paul and his wife, Agnes Christ of Lakota; one sister-in-law,
Verla Brandt of Titonka; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother,
Lottie (nee) Baade Christ; one niece, Roberta Addy Follis; and two
brothers-in-law, Robert Addy and William Brandt.

Mildred S. McMenimen
MASON CITY 

Mildred S. McMenimen, 80, of 139 25th St. S.W., died Monday
(Oct. 30, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday  at St. Joseph
Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Carl A. Ries
officiating.  Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial
Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Scriptural prayer service
 at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Amicare Home Healthcare, in memory
of Mildred S. McMenimen.

Mildred McMenimen was born Dec. 5, 1914, in Iowa Falls, the
daughter of William Jessup and Claudia (nee) Bates Jessup.  She
married John F. McMenimen on Sept. 11, 1933, at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church, Dougherty.

Mildred was past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW.
 She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Grandmothers
Club, and was an active volunteer in the community and assisted
with the elections for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan Carlson and her husband,
Neil, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Mary Gray and her husband,
Rod, of Reno, Nev.; two sons, Tom McMenimen and his wife, Blanche,
of St. Paul, Minn., and Jack McMenimen and his wife, Gretchen,
of Mill Valley, Calif.; one son-in-law, Robert Balek of Mason
City; four sisters, Gladys Campbell and Helen Campbell, both
of Dougherty; Dorothy Matthews of Lake City, Minn., and
Glenita Moore, Monument, Kan.; 14 grandchildren; and 15
great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John,
on Dec. 25, 1993; and one daughter, Marilyn Balek on Jan. 4,
1992.

Mariene Fransdal
CHARLES CITY 

Mariene Fransdal, 58, of Charles City, died Sunday (Oct. 29,
1995) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St.
John Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag
and the Rev. Karen Rask-Behling officiating.  Burial will be
in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Hauser
Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services on
Thursday.

For those wanting to make a memorial contribution, the family
suggests giving to the Heart to Home Hospice of Charles City.

Mariene Ann (nee) Sather Fransdal was born Dec. 8, 1936, in
Estherville.

Survivors include her husband, Merrill; two sons, Mel of Tucson,
Ariz., and Mark of Cedar Falls; one daughter, Marcia Horvath
of Denver, Colo.; her mother, Mildred Sather of Estherville;
one brother, Edward Sather of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister,
Carole Alexander of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and two grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Edward Melsh, 61, of 220 Second St. N.W., died Monday (Oct.
30, 1995) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the
Fullerton-Patterson-James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. The
Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church will officiate
and inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends and relatives from 8:30 a.m. until
time of service on Friday at the funeral home.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials
to the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Edward George Melsh was born Dec. 30, 1933, in Mason City to
Edward Carl Melsh and Marjorie (nee) Moe Melsh.

He graduated from high school in Eldora and attended junior
college.

He married Helen Godfrey on June 13, 1975, in Las Vegas.

Edward was a self-employed painter and lived in Waterloo, Cedar
Rapids and Nebraska, but always considered Mason City to be his
home.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and loved spending
time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

Edward's hobbies included collecting vintage radio tapes, classical
music, growing cactus and gardening.

He played chess and also taught his three grandsons to play.

Edward is survived by his wife, Helen, of Mason City; five stepchildren,
Mrs. Bob Valorie Rink of Phoenix, Ariz.; Douglas Jimenez and
his wife, Corie, of Ventura, Calif.; Mrs. Tony, Stephanie Orozco
of Mason City; the Rev. William ``Bill'' Jimenez and his wife,
Wanda, of Ravenna, Neb., and Mrs. Kirk, Elizabeth Mathews of
Hampton; 11 grandchildren, Lori, Michael, John, Paul, Erin, Sarah,
Ruth, Mark, Julia, Keren and William; five great-grandchildren;
one brother, Reid A. Melsh3 and his wife, Frances, of Waterloo;
one aunt, Dorothy Klaggs of Palmdale, Calif.; and one nephew,
Duane R. Melsh of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson,
Matthew Orozco on Aug. 9, 1987; and a brother, Ward Melsh in 1994.

Dave E. Follett
WEBSTER CITY  

Dave E. Follett, 73, of 605 Lyndale, formerly of Mason City,
died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 1995) at the Kavanagh House, Des Moines.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Dunn's Funeral
Home, 2121 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, with the Rev. Roy Ives officiating.

Interment will be 3 p.m. Friday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery,
Mason City.

Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association
in his memory.

Dave E. Follett, the son of Elise ``Kittelson'' Ryan and
Pete Ryan, was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Mason City.

He attended high school and junior college in Mason City until
entering the armed services, serving from 1943 through 1945.

He returned and studied to be a teacher at Iowa State Teachers
College.

On Aug. 22, 1948, he married Emily Scherich at the Congregational
Church in Webster City.

In 1951 through 1966, he was a police officer for the Mason
City police force.

In 1966, he became a parole and probation officer for the State
of Iowa and transferred from Mason City to the Fort Dodge area.
He retired in 1986.

Dave belonged to the First United Methodist Church of Mason
City, and the Harding Masonic Lodge of Mason City.

Mr. Follett is survived by his wife, Emily, of Webster City;
a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Jane Follett of Columbia,
S.C,. and a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Mark McConnell
of Schaller; a granddaughter, Lendie Ruth Follett, and a grandson,
Zachary Ryan McConnell. He also leaves his dear friend,
Marcia Baxter, who has been like a daughter.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father grandparents
and an infant brother.

University Hospitals, Iowa City.

Margaret Rita Rose
HAMPTON  

Margaret Rita Rose, 72, of Hampton, died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 1995)
at Franklin General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gerald Condon officiating. 

There is no visitation as the body was donated to medical science.

Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Rita Rose was born Feb. 22, 1923 in Chicago, Ill.

Survivors include one son, Kevin Rose of Hampton; one sister,
Eleanor Blanchfield of Glenwood, Ill.; and one grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter,
one brother and one sister.

Deloris Elaine Nelson McVey
ALEXANDER  

Deloris Elaine Nelson McVey, 59, passed away Tuesday (Oct. 31,
1995) at University Hospitals, Iowa City.

Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First
Reformed Church, Alexander, with the Rev. Jerry Norman officiating.
The family requests casual attire be worn for the memorial service.

Interment will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Amsterdam Township Cemetery,
Kanawha.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ewing Funeral
Home, Belmond.

Dee was born on Nov. 13, 1935, in Hayfield, the daughter of
Marson K. Nelson and Verla M. (nee) Berhow Nelson.

She grew up in Belmond and attended Belmond schools, graduating
in 1953.

She spent a couple of years in California and then returned
to Belmond 

in 1957 where she worked at various jobs.

Dee owned and operated the Sundowner Steakhouse Restaurant in
Clarion and later Sundowner II in Thornton.

On Dec. 14, 1987, she was united in marriage to Jim McVey. The
couple made their home in Alexander.

 For the last five years, she worked at Dudley's near Hampton.

Dee loved to spend her time reading and crocheting. She also
enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and gardening. She
liked to cook. Her kitchen was a restaurant to her grandkids;
whatever they wanted she would fix.

 Family traditions were important to her. She is remembered
as a caring daughter, taking care of her father after her mother's
death. Dee was a ``Grandma'' to more than her own grandchildren
and she was also a good neighbor, active in supporting her neighbors
and community.

Dee belonged to the First Reformed Church in Alexander where
she participated in the Women's Guild.

Dee is survived by her husband, Jim; two daughters, Susan Weide
of Iowa Falls, and Pamela Wiemann and her husband, Dennis, of
Norwalk; one brother, Duane ``Swede'' and his wife, Gerri, of
Encinitas, Calif.; four grandchildren, Denise and her husband,
Tony; David, Jonathan and Sarah; one great-granddaughter, Macy;
five stepchildren; and four stepgrandchildren; and many relatives
and friends.

Jean Lester
CLARION 

Jean Lester, 70, died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 1995) at the University
Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St.
John's Catholic Church, Clarion, with the Rev. Wayne Droessler

Elden T. Devereaux
CLEAR LAKE 

Elden T. Devereaux, 86, of 700 S. Third St., Clear Lake, died
Thursday (Nov. 2, 1995) at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First
Congregational Church in Clear Lake.  The Rev. Larry Squier and
Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka will officiate.  The body will be cremated
and burial will take place in Prescott, Kan. at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of North Iowa
or the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake.

Elden was born Jan. 20, 1909 in Prescott, Kan., the son of
Thomas Edward Devereaux and Anna (nee) McIntyre Devereaux.  He
graduated from Ft. Scott High School and went on to receive a bachelor
of science degree from the University of Kansas.  While in college, 
he was the quarterback of the University of Kansas football team.

He was united in marriage with Peggy Miller in 1938 in Chicago,
Ill.  The couple moved to Clear Lake in 1946.

He was employed by Allied Mills in sales for 25 years, retiring
in 1972.  After leaving that job, he purchased the grain elevator
at Hutchins in partnership with Bob Artis.  He retired in 1982.

Elden's hobbies included making jewelry, stained glass, wood
carving, gardening and fishing.  He was also an avid reader of
western novels and had the thrill of recording a hole-in-one
while golfing in a tournament at the All-Veteran's Golf Club
in Clear Lake.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Clear
Lake.

He is survived by two nieces, Dorothy Kennedy of Kansas City,
Kan., and Ella Ernst of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1951; a
brother, Leo Edward Devereaux; and a sister,
Stella (nee) Devereaux Kennedy.

Harold F. Nicholson, 72, of 114 East North St., Manly, died
at home Thursday (Nov. 2, 1995).

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem

Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Harold F. Nicholson was born Nov. 19, 1922, in Osage to
Harry Nicholson and Maude (nee) Carey Nicholson.  He was baptized
and confirmed in Osage and attended school there.  He was a member of
the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in
Normandy and Northern France, earning the Purple Heart medal.
Harold married Anna May (nee) Braun on Feb. 24, 1946, at Bethlehem
Lutheran in Mason City.

Harold was employed by Armour Food Company for 47 years and
also farmed and raised livestock on his acreage.  He enjoyed
caring for animals, gardening, fishing and loved good polka music.
 He will be remembered as a hard working and patient man who
loved his family and grandchildren.

Harold Nicholson is survived by three children, Mrs. Randy (Patricia)
Austin, John Nicholson, and Sharon Hull, all of Manly; seven
grandchildren, Brandy, Ryan, Amber, John Wayne, Christopher,
Teri and Cody; one great-grandchild, Dylan; a sister,
Gladys Bessman of Mason City; brothers, Stanley and Marshal Nicholson
of Mason City, and Harry Nicholson of Rudd; and several nieces
and nephews.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Anna
on April 13, 1993; a grandson, Jeremy Austin; and brothers, Lester
and George Nicholson.

Graveside services were held 2:30 p.m. at Eldora Cemetery, Eldora.

Funeral Home, 5400 S. W. Ninth St., Des Moines, with the family
present from 4 to 6 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the United Way in her memory.

She was employed at Blue Cross & Blue Shield, acturial services.

She was a board member of the Iowa Comprehensive Association.
She played a key role in helping to model Iowa insurance market
reform legislation. She was a member of the Lambda Chapter of
Phi Sigma Alpha of Des Moines.

Survivors include her mother, Evelyn Mae Mehus of Eldora; two
sisters, LaVon Pfeifler and her husband, Tom, of Des Moines,
and Adela Niedermann and her husband, Dale, of Madrid; one brother,
Neal Mehus and his wife, Nancy, of Radcliffe; two nieces,
Kris Mehus and Angela Mehus, both of Radcliffe; and six nephews,
Allen Niedermann of Madrid;  Eric Niedermann, Des Moines;
Ian Niedermann of Madrid; Daniel Pfeifler, Brian Pfeifler and
Paul Pfeifler, all of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Mehus.

A funeral Mass for Earl Joseph Newbern, 76, of 415 N. Bluff,

Earl Joseph Newbern was born July 16, 1919, in Coldwater Township,
Butler County, a son of Perry A. Newbern and Julia M. (nee) Stevens
Newbern, and died Friday (Nov. 3, 1995) at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua
Guest Home, Charles City, where he had been a resident since
November of 1994.

He received his education in the rural Coldwater Township schools
and graduated from the Sacred Heart Academy in Greene. He later
attended and graduated from the Mason City College of Auctioneering.

Earl worked on the family farm his entire life and conducted
auctions in the Greene and Waverly areas for many years. In 1982,
he retired and moved into Greene.

Earl enjoyed fishing, playing cards and visiting with his friends
over a cup of coffee. He was a life-long faithful member of St.
Mary's Catholic Church.

Living family members include his sister, Lucy Newbern of Greene;
one brother, William Newbern of Des Moines; and one aunt,
Pearl Stevens of Winterhaven, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister,
Catherine Newbern on June 13, 1921.
