William H. "Bill" Luppen

April 4, 1935 - February 23, 2014

William H. "Bill" LuppenWilliam Harold Luppen, aged 78, died February 23, 2014, at Iowa City Rehabilitation Center in Iowa City surrounded by his family.

Funeral services for William Luppen will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 10:30 AM at United Methodist Church, 885 Maben Avenue, in Garner with Rev. Paul Evans officiating. Burial will be at Concord Cemetery in Garner.

Visitation will be held at the United Methodist Church in Garner on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM and continue one hour prior to services at the church.  Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt is assisting the family with arrangements.

Bill was born on April 4, 1935, at home near Kanawha, Iowa, to Will and Carrie Luppen. He grew up on a farm near Kanawha and after HS graduation began working at the North Iowa Experimental Farm. On a blind date he met the love of his life and married Janet Smith on 11/7/1954. They were transferred to the Howard County Experimental farm where for the next 12 years he worked with ISU farm research. In 1969 he became the plant manager for CFS in Garner and later purchased the plant and started B&L Farmacy until his retirement in 2004.  At 0430 every morning the coffee club would commence at B&L to resolve local and governmental issues. If only the fertilizer generated from those early philosophical discussions could have been bagged all involved would have retired early and rich. Unable to remain retired he worked at Stellar Industries until illness forced him to retire.

Bill devoted his time to his wife, family, and love of his work. Always with a smile and a kind word he would go out of his way to help anyone. He was the ultimate role model as a father and devoted husband. His departure leaves a huge gap but his memories and examples will lead the next generation.

Bill is survived by his children, son Kevin (Janice) and their children Gregory and Sadie of Wasilla, Alaska; son Milo (Kim) and his sons Jordan, Riley, and Jake of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; daughter Bambi (Jeff) Urich and her sons Tyler, Trevor (Whitney) and Tanner (Sarah) of Garner, Iowa; daughter Misty (Tony) Bartleson and their daughters Cheslea (Zach), Natessa, Miranda of Forest City, Iowa; daughter Kelli (Doug) Krutsinger and their children Ian and Emma of Marengo, Iowa. Great-grandchildren Braylon and Hayden Urich and Harlow Frederick.  Sisters Carolyn (Dennis) Lamoreux, Britt, Iowa and Janet (Dale) Sundeen of Golden, Colorado.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Janet, his parents Will and Carrie, Brother Roger Keith, and son-in-law Bernie Urich.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the Bernie Urich Memorial Music Scholarship.

Gladys (Greimann) Alden

Gladys (Greimann) Alden, age 92, a resident of rural Garner, died of a short illness after a long life, on March 8, 2014, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient in Mason City.

Gladys Gwendolyn Greimann was born on March 15, 1922, on the family farm outside of Garner, the seventh of eight children of William Henry and Bettie Emilie (Schuldt) Greimann. Despite the economic hard times of the 1930s, she had many happy memories of her childhood. The children waded in the creek and played in the walnut and willow grove in summer and played fox and goose in the winter snow. She was confirmed at the Peace Reformed Church. She attended Garner High School and graduated from the normal program for teachers when she was 16. Because she was too young to take a teaching position, she completed an education degree at Cedar Falls Teachers' College (University of Northern Iowa). She then taught in several schools in Ell Township and Cerro Gordo counties.

In March 1941, she and a school friend attended a community dance in Klemme, where she was asked to dance by what described as a "very handsome guy" from Thornton, Eldridge Alden. She and her handsome guy married later that year, which began a long and loving marriage of 73 years.

Shortly after they wed, Eldridge entered the Army Air Corps, and Gladys joined him as he moved between bases. She worked a variety of jobs, including a munitions factory to aid the war effort. After the war ended, the couple resided first in Thornton and then at the Greimann family farm, where she raised their five children. After the children were grown, she took a position with the Iowa State Department of Human Services.

Gladys was active in the Klemme UCC church, where she served as elder. She loved singing, playing her piano, and was an accomplished writer who compiled family histories.

Her death was sudden, unexpected, and mercifully peaceful.

She is survived by her loving husband of 73 years, Eldridge, her children, Glen (Sioux), Lynn (Raymond), Roxy (Jim), and Beth (Bill); her grandchildren, Sarah and Kyle; and her brother Earl (Alice). She was predeceased in death by her beloved son, Rex Edward.

Gladys had many friends in the community and will be greatly missed.

No formal funeral services are planned at this time. Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Reformed UCC Church of Klemme, the family of Gladys Alden, or to the donor's choice.
