Max Lage, 1904-2002

Max Lage, 98, of Sheffield, died
on Thursday, May 2, 2002, at the
Sheffield Care Center.
Funeral services were held at
1:30 p.m., on Saturday, May 4,
at the First Baptist Church in
Sheffield, with Rev. David
Schwechel presiding. Burial was
in the Hillside Cemetery,
Sheffield. Visitation was from
5-8:00 p.m., on Friday, at the
Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf-Grarup
Funeral Home.
Max Lage, was
born on April 25, 1904, on the
family farm in Carroll County, a
son of James Herman and Augusta
(Witt) Lage. His family moved to
the Latimer area. He attended
Iowa State College in Ames for
classes on dairy farming and
after working on dairy farms for
other people he eventually had
his own dairy farm near Latimer.
On February 25,
1937, Max was united in marriage
with Ione Mae Heidkross at the
Parsonage of the First Baptist
Church in Mason City. They made
their home on the farm Ione was
born on, northwest of Sheffield,
and lived there until 1998.
Max was baptized
into the First Baptist Church,
Sheffield, in 1943 and served
many years as Deacon. He was
active in farming the entire 61
years he lived on the farm at
Sheffield and was a long time
member of Farm Bureau. Max was a
devoted and loving husband who
took care of his wife at home
for many years. He was also
known as a considerate employer
and took great pride in his
family farm.
Max Lage is
survived by 2 sons, John Lage
and his wife, Meta of Sheffield
and Dr. Gerald Lage and his
wife, Colleen of Stillwater,
Oklahoma; 4 grandchildren,
Michael Lage and his wife, Diana
and their children, Brandon and
Tyler of Sheffield, Mark Lage
and his wife, Pamela and their
children, Ryan and Jacob of
Sheffield, Brian Lage of
Gladbrook, Iowa and Andrea Lage
and her husband, Christopher
Woltemade of Shippensburg,
Pennsylvania; sister, Luella
Givens of Titonka, Iowa;
brother, Leland Lage of Mesa,
Arizona; sister-in-law, Agnes
Lage of Meservey; and many
nieces and nephews.
Max was preceded
in death by his parents;
step-mother, Hazel (Sauers)
Lage; Ione his wife of 64 years;
4 sisters, Pearl Regen, Louise
Tofts, Vianthia Dreyer and Maude
Guldberg; and 6 brothers, Ralph,
James, Howard, Kenneth, Earl and
Jess.

Rev. Arnold Boehnke,
1911-2002

The Rev. Arnold F. Boehnke of
Colorado Springs, Colorado,
formerly of Garner, died on
Friday, May 3, 2002, at the
Penrose Hospital, Colorado
Springs. He was 90.
Funeral services
will be held at 11:00 a.m., on
Thursday, May 9, at the St.
John's Lutheran Church, rural
Garner, with the Rev. Carl
Hedberg officiating. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held one hour
prior to the services at the
church on Thursday. The Cataldo
Funeral Home is in charge of the
arrangements.
Pastor Arnold F.
Boehnke, the son of Carl August
and Matilda (Dorow) Boehnke, was
born on October 3, 1911 at
Garner. He was baptized and
confirmed at the St. John's
Lutheran Church. He attended St.
John's Parochial School before
entering his ministerial
training at Concordia College,
St. Paul, Minnesota. He spent
two years as Vicar at the St.
Paul's Lutheran Church, Knoke,
Iowa, teaching eight grades in a
one-room Lutheran School and
tending to pastoral duties for
the congregation. He graduated
from the Concordia Seminary, St.
Louis, Missouri in 1937.
On September 5,
1937, he married Alice Helena
Roenfanz at the St. John's
Lutheran Church, Garner. During
his years in the ministry,
Pastor Boehnke served parishes
in Knoke, Fort Dodge, and Lake
City, Iowa; Great Falls,
Montana; Jefferson, Iowa; as
missionary-at-large for
Leadville, Colorado and the
surrounding areas; Ogden, Utah;
and returned to serve Leadville,
Colorado; and served First
Lutheran Church, Salida,
Colorado, until he retired from
the active ministry in 1976.
While in Lake
City, Iowa, he served as circuit
counsel for and as pastoral
counselor for the Lutheran
Women's Missionary League. In
the District, he was a member of
the Youth Board and Board of
Christian Education. He served
as Chairman of the Family Life
Committee and the Board of
Appeals for the Iowa District
West and the Colorado Districts.
While in Leadville, Pastor
Boehnke served as Chairman of
the county CROP program and Lake
County Board of Health, was a
member of the Mental Health
Clinic and the Family Planning,
Committee. He served as a
marriage counselor and counselor
to alcoholics and as a board
member of the State Hospital.
Upon retiring,
Pastor Boehnke served as vacancy
pastor in Colorado for the
congregations of Golden, Kit
Carson, Cheyenne Wells, Sugar
City, Rocky Ford, and Bennett,
as well as Shepherd of the
Springs, Colorado Springs,
Colorado.
Rev. Boehnke is
survived by his wife, Alice of
Colorado Springs; two sons, the
Rev. Richard Boehnke and his
wife, Gayle of Ortonville,
Minnesota and Rev. David Boehnke
and his wife, Lynn of Wheaton,
Minnesota; a daughter, Lavonne
Lehmpuhl and her husband,
William of Colorado Springs;
also 14 grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren; one
brother, Arthur Boehnke of
Garner; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; four
brothers, Albert, Charles,
William and Herman Boehnke; and
one sister, Tillie Hinrichs.

Lloyd R. Ginapp, 1934-2002

Lloyd R. Ginapp, 68, of
Rockwell, died on Friday night,
May 3, 2002, at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit.
A memorial mass
celebrating Lloyd's life was
held at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday,
May 7, at the Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in Rockwell,
with the Rev. Leo Riley
officiating. A gathering for
friends and family was held from
4-8:00 p.m., on Monday, at the
Sacred Heart School in Rockwell.
A parish wake service was held
at 5:00 p.m. in the school
chapel. Interment was in the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church
Cemetery of Rockwell.
Lloyd was born on
February 20, 1934 in Dougherty,
one of four children to
Frederick and Hettie (Allen)
Ginapp. In 1951 he graduated
from the Sheffield High School
and then assisted on the family
farm.
On August 22,
1953, he was united in marriage
to Irene Campbell at the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in
Rockwell. He and his wife owned
and operated Lloyd's Place
Tavern in Rockwell where they
started raising their four
children. Lloyd also drove truck
during this time for Mitchell
Transport. Following the closing
of that company he operated the
American Legion Club in Rockwell
off and on for several years
depending on his health.
Lloyd was a crack shot at
hunting and spent many relaxing
trips fishing up North with his
family and friends. His sense of
humor was evident to all and he
really enjoyed playing cards
with his buddies. When he was
younger he bowled and played
softball. His volunteer service
was most evident by serving on
the Rockwell Fire Department for
44 years. Irene and Lloyd would
often be found gliding around
dance floors in the North Iowa
area. In his later years
spending time with his grandkids
meant everything to him.
Those who shared
in Lloyd's life include his wife
of 48 years, Irene of Rockwell;
two daughters, Anna Starkweather
of Waverly, Mary and her
husband, Rodney Askildson of
Mason City; two sons, Tim Ginapp
of Rockwell and Tom and his
wife, Lori Ginapp of Mason City;
twelve wonderful grandchildren,
Neely Starkweather-Sable, Amy,
Michael, and Keisha
Starkweather, Shane, Cymbria,
Angela, and Adam Askeldson,
Abbi, Tony, Missy and Katie
Ginapp; one great-granddaughter,
Mackenzie Starkweather-Sable;
and one brother, Leslie and his
wife, Joreen Ginapp of Edgerton,
Wisconsin.
He was proceeded
in death by his parents; one
grandson, David Starkweather;
two brothers, Kenet and Lyle
Ginapp; one step-sister, Norma
Fingalsen; and his step-mother,
May Ginapp.

Evelyn Kyhl, 1905-2002

Funeral services for Evelyn
Kyhl, 96, of Britt, were held on
Saturday, May 4, 2002, at the
United Methodist Church, Britt.
The Rev. Robert Dodge
officiated. Music was provided
by Marilyn DeKruyff, who
accompanied soloist, Carol
Evers. Interment was in the
Evergreen Cemetery, Britt. The
Ewing Funeral Home was in charge
of the arrangements.
Evelyn died on Monday, February
4, 2002, at the Westview Care
Center in Britt.
Evelyn, the
daughter of Mortimore and
Magdalene "Maggie" (Nelson)
Truitt, was born on May 22, 1905
in Earl Park, Indiana. Her
father died when she was three
years old and the family moved
to Hutchins, Iowa to live with
her grandparents, Sven and
Johanna Nelson. After living in
Hutchins and north of Britt on
Upper Flat, they moved to
Balatine, Minnesota for three
years. In 1917, her mother
married C. M. Christenson and
they moved to his farm north of
Britt on Upper Flat.
She received her
education in the country schools
in Hutchins, Balatine, Minnesota
and Upper Flat. She also
attended the Britt High School.
She attended the Upper Flat
Church until moving to Britt.
She loved playing the piano and
reading until she lost her
sight.
On November 11,
1926, Evelyn Truitt was united
in marriage with Emil Kyhl at
the home of her parents. The
couple farmed near Britt for
three years until 1929 when they
moved to a ranch in Montana. In
1948, they returned to Britt.
Mrs. Kyhl was a
long time member of the Rebekah
Lodge, the Odd Fellows
organization, and the United
Methodist Church in Britt.
She is survived
by two sons, Emil Kyhl, Jr. and
his wife, Eleanor of Los
Angeles, California and Arlen
Kyhl and his wife, Tressa of
Billings, Montana; a sister,
Deloris Leaman and her husband,
Dean of Columbia, Maryland;
sister-in-law, Elina Shirah of
Billings, Montana; 11
grandchildren including Mark
Kyhl and his wife, Barb of
Britt; 30 great-grandchildren;
and 21
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by her parents;
husband, Emil; two sons, Rollin
and Denny; two grandsons, Chris
and Kelly; three brothers,
Emmet, Albert and Urban; and
three sisters, Carol, Delphine
and Evelyn.

Memorial services for Dennis
"Denny" Moen, 50, of Montgomery,
Texas, were held on Saturday,
May 4, 2002, at the Metcalf
Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Bob
Southard and the Rev. Mike
Rinehart officiated.
Dennis died on
Tuesday, April 30, 2002 in
Houston, Texas, from injuries
sustained in a horse riding
accident.
Dennis Moen, was
born on July 24, 1951 in Forest
City, Iowa. He was a licensed
auctioneer in Iowa who enjoyed
doing local benefit auctions. He
was an avid golfer and horse
rider.
Survivors include
his wife of 20 years, Marie Moen
of Montgomery, Texas; daughters,
Jody Moen and her special
friend, Dave Kaduce of Clear
Lake and Betsy Moen of
Montgomery, Texas.
Also surviving
are a sister, JoAnn Steenblock
and her husband, Leo of Forest
City; his mother-in-law, Ruth
Redalen of Montgomery, Texas;
two nieces, Amber Moen and
Mickie Steenblock, both of
Forest City; Mentor, Tommy Lynn
and other friends.
He was preceded
in death by his parents, Arlo
and Maxine Moen.

Francis E. "Frank" Richter,
1924-2002

Francis E. "Frank" Richter, died
at his home, on Sunday, May 5,
2002, at the age of 77.
A Funeral mass was held on
Thursday, May 9, at the St.
Joseph Catholic Church in
Wesley, Iowa. Father Daniel
Greving was the celebrant.
Interment was held in the St.
Joseph's Catholic Cemetery,
Wesley. Casket bearers were
grandsons, Patrick Smith, Brian
Garman, Paul Richter, Shawn
Richter, Jason Richter, Ben
Richter, Brian Richter and
Jeremy Richter. The
Garry-Robert-Murphy-Schaaf
Funeral Home of Wesley, Iowa was
in charge of the arrangements.
Francis Eugene
Richter, was born on August 12,
1924 near Wesley, to John and
Laura Ferstl Richter. He
received his education in
Wesley, graduating from the
Wesley High School in 1942.
After his schooling, Frank
farmed with his dad.
On September 14, 1944, Frank
married Mary Gray at the St.
Mary's Catholic Church in
Corwith. The couple continued
farming east of Wesley until
1967. Frank then worked for Tom
Forburger in building
construction. He then worked for
Bob Becker in the construction
business for over 30 years.
Frank also worked for the ASCS
office in Garner, where he
measured farm ground. He was
also on the ASCS Board for a
time.
Frank was a
member of the St. Joseph
Catholic Church in Wesley. His
greatest love in life was his
wife, his children,
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
He is survived by
his loving wife of 57 years,
Mary of Wesley; 2 daughters,
Connie Smith and husband, Walt
of Rock Hill, South Carolina and
Georgene Garman of Wesley; 7
sons, Steve and wife, Scherry of
Romona, California, Bill and
wife, Cathie of Whittemore, Phil

Joyce E. Holta, of Garner, died
on Thursday, May 9, 2002, at the
Good Shepherd Health Center,
Mason City. She was 73.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, May 13, at
the Cataldo Funeral Home in
Garner, with the Rev. Michael
Schueller of the St. Boniface
Catholic Church officiating.
Interment was in the Concord
Township Cemetery. The Cataldo
Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements.
Joyce Elizabeth
Holta, the adopted daughter of
Angelo I. and Charlotte Mabel
Johnson, was born on December
13, 1928 at St. Paul, Minnesota.
She was baptized in Minot, North
Dakota on August 31, 1930.
She lived with
her parents in Minot, and moved
with them to Algona in the
1950s. They later moved to
Garner where Joyce's mother
owned and operated a ladies and
infant apparel shop on State
Street.
Joyce was
disabled and resided at the Good
Shepherd Health Center in Mason
City since May of 1988. Eunice
Robertson cared for Joyce and
her mother, Charlotte, over the
years. Joyce was a member of the
St. Boniface Catholic Church.
She was preceded
in death by her father, Angelo;
and her mother, Charlotte on
October 28, 1981.

Harlan Stevenson, 1916-2002

Harlan R. Stevenson, of Britt,
died on Sunday, May 12, 2002, at
the Westview Care Center in
Britt. He was 85.
Funeral services
were held on Wednesday, May 15,
at the United Methodist Church,
Britt. The Rev. Robert Dodge
officiated. Music was provided
by Frances Huling who
accompanied soloist, Eugene
Guenther and a congregational
hymn. Ushers were Harry Smith
and Dennis Zuehl.
Burial was in the
Evergreen Cemetery. Military
services were provided by the
Britt Ceremonial Unit. Casket
bearers were Allan Orsen, Dennis
Swyter, Steve Erickson, Jon
Stevenson, Robert Sendle and
Mike Stevenson. The Ewing
Funeral Home of Britt was in
charge of the arrangements.
Harlan Robert
Stevenson, son of Minnie G. and
Herbert R. Stevenson was born at
Brandt, South Dakota on June 25,
1916. He attended country school
through the eighth grade and
graduated from the Morris School
of Agriculture, Morris,
Minnesota, in May of 1935.
He worked on road
construction in Minnesota for a
short time and then went to
Weslaco, Texas and worked at a
grapefruit juice plant. In 1938,
he came to Britt and worked one
season on a farm and then was
employed by his uncles, Wallace
and Les Stevenson who owned and
operated the Stevenson Dairy at
Britt.
On November 3,
1941, he married Alberta L.
Clapsaddle from Britt at the
Webster, South Dakota, First
Methodist Church.
On January 24,
1942, he was drafted into the
army. He trained at Camp
Walters, Texas, then at Camp
Shelby, Hattiesburg,
Mississippi, training as an auto
mechanic. October 5, 1942, he
joined the 169th infantry, 43rd
Division and served in the South
Pacific Islands until May of
1945. He earned the
Distinguished Service Cross and
Purple Heart while on Russell
Islands for the North Solomon
Campaign during W.W. II. He
earned the Bronze Star for his
service on the Island of Iwo
Jima. He received his honorable
discharge on March 17, 1945.
Upon returning
home, Mr. Stevenson farmed,
built and sold buildings, raised
hogs, and built and operated the
Stevenson Feed and Farm Supply
from 1957 to March of 1974. He
enjoyed farming, building,
traveling, woodworking, square
dancing, and camping. He retired
from farming in 1990.
Mr. Stevenson was
a member of the Britt United
Methodist Church, a 50-year
member of the Masonic Lodge, a
member of the Eastern Star, VFW,
and American Legion.
He is survived by
his wife, Alberta of Britt; son,
Gary and his wife, Mary Ann of
Mounds View, Minnesota;
grandchildren, Joshua and
Katherine; three sisters,
Bernice Swyter of Paynesville,
Minnesota, DeLane Erickson of
Mounds View, Minnesota and Ruth
Smeby of Mason City; three
brothers, Arnold and his friend,
Marilyn of Lady of the Lake,
Florida, Kenneth and his wife,
Dorothy of Minneapolis,
Minnesota and Robert and his
friend, Vicky of Britt; and many
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded

Marilyn Adel Kruse, died at her
home in LuVerne, on Tuesday, May
14, 2002. She was 73,
Funeral services were held on
Friday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m.,
at the United Methodist Church
in LuVerne, with Rev. Dale
Reisner officiating. Casket
bearers were Richard Bohan,
Terry Warmbier, Dan Hilbert,
Michael Bohan, Kim Nielson, and
Roger Will. Burial was in the
LuVerne Cemetery. The
Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf
Funeral Home of LuVerne was in
charge of the arrangements.
Marilyn Adel
Kruse, was born on January 25,
1929 at LuVerne, Iowa to Harold
and Helen Wegner Nielson Sr. She
received her education in
LuVerne, graduating from the
LuVerne High School in 1947.
Marilyn then graduated from the
LaJames College of Hairstyling
and Cosmetology in Mason City,
Iowa.
She was married to Dale T.
Zentner on October 24,1948, at
the Little Brown Church in
Nashua, Iowa. The couple lived
in LuVerne, where Marilyn owned
and operated the LuVerne Beauty
shop until 1990. Marilyn's
husband, Dale preceded her in
death in February 1993.
On September 25,
1993, Marilyn was married to
Donald "Ding" Kruse, at the
LuVerne United Methodist Church.
The couple remained in LuVerne,
where they built a new home.
Marilyn was an
active member of the LuVerne
United Methodist Church, where
she belonged to UMW, and had
served as Secretary-Treasurer
for many years. She also
belonged to the Evening Star
Circle and was Chairperson for
the Pastor-Parish Relations
Committee for 2 terms. She
belonged to the Historical
Society, the Goodwill Club and
the Community Club in LuVerne.
Marilyn was active in the
Democratic Party for many years.
She collected bells, birds and
jewelry. Marilyn enjoyed
snowmobiling and traveling. She
loved the outdoors and spent
many hours gardening and growing
flowers. She also enjoyed
fishing, letter writing,
reading, baking and entertaining
her friends, but her greatest
enjoyment in life was her
family.
Marilyn is
survived by her husband, Donald
of LuVerne; daughter, Gretchen
Conn and her special friend,
John Haas of West Des Moines;
and her son, Tom Zentner and
wife, Betty of LuVerne; 4
grandchildren, Kate Conn of
Columbus, Ohio, Lara Steward and
husband, Matt of Salisbury,
Maryland, Zachary Zentner and
wife, Elizabeth of Jasper,
Indiana and Emily Zentner of
Ames; and 1 great-grandson, Adam
Zentner; her mother, Helen
Nielson; and 3 brothers, Richard
and wife, Joyce, Robert and
Harold, Jr. and wife, Carmen,
all of LuVerne.
She was preceded
in death by her father; and her

Robert V. Haan, 1915-2002

Robert V. Haan, of Garner, died
on Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at
the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, May 18,
at the St. Boniface Catholic
Church, with the Rev. Michael
Schueller officiating. Mildred
Young was the lector. Music was
provided by organist, Carolyn
Kumsher who accompanied the
church choir. Ushers were Joe
Deibler and Jim Deibler.
Casket bearers
were Steve Dallman, Clay Haan,
Jeff Haan, Michelle Gallentine,
Mathew Jones, Phillip Jones,
James Haan, Brian Gallentine,
Sean Gallentine and Michael
Mikesh. Interment was in the St.
James Catholic Cemetery, Forest
City. The Cataldo Funeral Home
of Garner was in charge of the
arrangements.
Robert Vincent
Haan, the son of John and Zita
(O'Byrne) Haan, was born on
September 27, 1915 at Armstrong.
His early years were spent on a
farm near Crystal Lake. The
family then moved to Hollandale,
Minnesota and farmed there for
several years before returning
to Crystal Lake. Bob spent his
teen years helping his father
raise vegetables.
On February 8,
1937, he married Colina Mikesh
at the St. James Catholic Church
in Forest City. They farmed near
Crystal Lake, Forest City and
Garner. In 1949, they moved to
Miller where they lived for 53
years. Mr. Haans early years
were spent farming and working
construction jobs. He was also
employed by Hancock County for
17 years and Winnebago
Industries in Forest City for 11
years until his retirement.
After retiring from Winnebago,
if there was a job to do he was
always "johnny on the spot".
His hobbies included collecting
"collector series" whiskey
bottles, wood working projects,
gardening, hunting, trapping and
fishing.
He was a member
of the St. Boniface Catholic
Church, belonged to the Knights
of Columbus and was a 4th Degree
Knight. He also served as a
member of SHARE, was a former
4-H Leader, helped with Special
Olympics and worked on the
project Green Thumb at Pilot
Knob near Forest City.
He is survived by
his wife of 65 years, Colina of
Garner; daughter, Roberta Speer
of Polk City; sons, Richard Haan
and his wife, Gloria of
Kimberling City, Missouri, Ralph
Haan and his wife, Rita of Eden
Valley, Minnesota and Dennis
Haan and his wife, Irene of Eden
Valley, Minnesota; daughter,
Delores Jones and her husband,
Greg of Mason City; five
granddaughters; six grandsons;
and 18 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving
are two sisters, Constance
"Connie" Urgo of New Brighton,
Minnesota and Jeanette "Janie"
Schleusner and her husband,
Bernard of North Branch,
Minnesota; a brother-in-law,
Walter Bartosek of Barefoot Bay,
Florida; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded
in death by his parents; a son,
Timothy; brothers, Edward
"Bill", Frank, Jim and Richard
"Dick" Haan; sisters, Marie
"Mick" Fischer, Dorothy "Dodie"
Nygaard, Margaret "Maggie" Van
Beeck-Olson and Madonna "Donnie"

Carl L. Isaacson, 1908-2002

The Rev. Carl L. Isaacson, 93,
of Kanawha, died on Thursday,
May 16, 2002, at the Kanawha
Community Home in Kanawha.
Memorial services
were held on Monday, May 20, at
the Alert Covenant Church in
Leonardville, Kansas. The Rev.
Dwight Dille officiating.
Interment was in the Pleasant
Hill Cemetery, Leonardville,
Kansas. The Ewing Funeral Home
was in charge of the
arrangements.
Carl Leonard
Isaacson, was born on August 7,
1908 in rural Mustang, Colorado.
He was the son of John and
Jennie (Erickson) Isaacson. He
lived on the family farm in
Colorado for several years and
helped with his father's farming
operation. He moved to Chicago,
Illinois in the mid 1940s, where
he attended Moody Bible
Institute, North Park College,
and North Park Theological
Seminary. He was ordained as a
minister of the Evangelical
Covenant Church of America.
Carl was united
in marriage to Lenore Bernice
Lund on June 14, 1952. To this
union one daughter was born.
Rev. Isaacson
served churches in the
communities of Leonardville,
Kansas; Brady, Nebraska; Haxtun,
Colorado; Dresden, Kansas;
Centerville, Iowa; Beresford,
South Dakota; Odebolt, Iowa; and
Kiron, Iowa. Due to health
reasons, he retired from the
ministry in the fall of 1978.
After the death of his wife in
December of 1985, Rev. Isaacson
moved to the Kanawha Community
Home so he could be close to his
daughter and her family.
He enjoyed
gardening, reading, and watching
Chicago Cubs baseball games.
He is survived by
his daughter, Barbara and her
husband, Doug Thompson of
Kanawha; and two grandsons, Adam
Thompson of Ames and Aaron
Thompson of Kanawha.
He was preceded
in death by his wife; his
parents; two brothers; and three
sisters.

Carla J. Rust, 1931-2001
May 21, 2002
A memorial service for Carla J.
Rust, 69, of Kanawha, was held
on Saturday, May 18, 2002, at
the United Methodist Church of
Kanawha. The Rev. Susan Detwiler
officiated. Music was provided
by Joann Hansen who accompanied
several congregational hymns.
Carla died on Saturday, December
15, 2001, at the Kanawha
Community Home, Kanawha.
Interment was in
the Amsterdam Township Cemetery.
The Ewing-Dugger Funeral home of
Kanawha was in charge of the
arrangements.
Carla Rust, the
daughter of Vernon and Lucia
(Tyrrell) Studer was born on
December 13, 1932 in Corwith. In
1945, the family moved to
Kanawha, where Carla later
graduated from high school.
Following graduation, Carla
attended beauty school in Des
Moines. She was employed in
Sioux City.
Carla was united
in marriage with Merle Rust on
March 6, 1955, at the Kanawha
United Methodist Church. The
couple made their home in the
Kanawha area where Carla was
employed at various beauty shops
and later was employed by P.S.I.
She was a member
of the Kanawha United Methodist
Church and the Eastern Star. She
was also a member of the
Professional Hairdressers
Association, where she held
several offices. Carla enjoyed
fishing, being with people and
having coffee with friends.
Survivors include
her husband, Merle of Kanawha;
and two sisters, Muriel and
Donald Hoover of Des Moines and
Carolee O'Connor of Ankeny.
She was preceded
in death by her parents.

Dorothy Margaret Weiland,
1909-2002
May 21, 2002
Dorothy Margaret Weiland, died
at the Algona Manor Care Center
in Algona, on Monday, May 20,
2002, at the age of 92.
Funeral services will be held on
Wednesday, May 22, at the United
Methodist Church in Wesley.
Interment will be in the
Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.
Casket bearers are her
grandsons, Terrance Weiland,
Todd Weiland, Troy Weiland,
Christopher Weiland, Timothy
Weiland, Jason Weiland, James
Weiland and Stacy Olson. The
Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf
Funeral Home of Algona, is in
charge of the arrangements.
Dorothy Margaret
Weiland, was born on October 1,
1909 in Wesley, Iowa, to Amos
and Lizzie Ann Seefeld Angle.
She received her education in
the rural school system near
Wesley.
Dorothy was married to Raymond
Richard Weiland on June 9, 1932
at Britt. The couple farmed
around Wesley until 1974, when
they retired and moved into
Algona, Iowa. Dorothy's husband,
Raymond preceded her in death in
July of 1976.
Dorothy was an
active member of the Wesley
United Methodist Church, where
she also belonged to the United
Methodist Women. Dorothy was
also a member of the Algona Sr.
Citizens. She enjoyed playing
cards, gardening, growing
flowers and listening to music.
She became a resident of the
Algona Manor Care Center in
Algona in May of 2000.
Dorothy is
survived by her children,
Phyllis Olson and husband, Larry
of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Wendel
Weiland and wife, Mary Ilah of
Algona and Ronald Weiland and
wife, Caecilia of Wesley; 13
grandchildren; 22
great-grandchildren; her
brother, Earl Angle of
Fallbrook, California; and her
sister-in-law, Esta Angle of
Swea City, Iowa.
Dorothy was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband,
Raymond; her son, Kendall in
1997; 2 sisters, Minnie Fuchsen
and DeEtta Jackowell; her
brother, Clayton Angle; and 2
daughters-in-law, Elaine and Bev
Weiland.

Blake James Blanchard,
1966-2002
May 28, 2002
Blake James Blanchard, 35, of
Rockwell, died on Monday, May
20, 2002, at the Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa, from
complications of diabetes.
Funeral services
were held at 10:30 a.m., on
Thursday, May 23, at the
Rockwell United Methodist
Church, with the Rev. Bruce
Wittern officiating. Interment
followed in the Sacred Heart
Catholic Cemetery. Visitation
was held from 6-8:00 p.m., on
Wednesday, at the Fullerton
Funeral Home in Rockwell.
Visitation continued on Thursday
one hour prior to the services
at the church.
In lieu of
flowers the family requests
memorials to the Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa Dialysis Unit,
in memory of Blake.
Blake James
Blanchard, was born on November
30, 1966, the son of James M.
and Jerriann (Johnson) Blanchard
in Mason City. He attended and
later graduated from the
Rockwell-Swaledale High School
in the class of 1984. Blake
began working for B & B Ag
Systems of Clear Lake. In 1993
he went to work for the Ken
Bratney Company. Four years
later in 1997, Blake was forced
to quit working for health
reasons.
Blake loved to be
outdoors hunting and fishing. He
was always game to shoot a
little pool or watch some TV. He
also looked forward to playing
with his cat. Blake cherished
his rides with his friends as
they hauled grain or livestock.
Blake's adoration was to his
niece and nephew who he loved
spending time with.
Those thankful
for having shared in Blake's
life include his mother,
Jerriann Ries and her husband,
Bruce of Rockwell; father, James
Blanchard and his wife, Kathryn
of Clear Lake; one brother,
Brent Blanchard and his wife,
Theresa of Rockwell; one niece,
Nickolle Paige Blanchard; and
one nephew, Chadd Michael
Blanchard of Rockwell;
step-grandparents, Rev. Clifford
and Mrs. Vivian Paulsen of
Nisswa, Minnesota; and many
aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mr. Blanchard was
preceded in death by his
grandparents, Harlan and Mildred
Johnson and Clovis and Delvina
Blanchard.

Gertrude Hummel, 1908-2002

Gertrude "Trudie" Elvera Johnson
Hummel, of Klemme, died on
Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at the
Medical Center in Belmond, with
her family at her side. She was
94.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, May 25,
at the United Methodist Church
in Klemme. The Rev. Paddy Druhl
of the Klemme United Methodist
and Pastors Tim and Cherrie
Peterson of the Christian Family
Church of Owatonna, Minnesota
officiated. Burial was in the
Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.
The Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home
of Klemme was in charge of the
arrangements.
Gertrude Elvera
Johnson Hummel, was born on
March 6, 1908, on a farm east of
Klemme. She was the daughter of
Joseph E. and Sophie (Ryden)
Johnson, who immigrated from
Sweden. She graduated from the
Klemme High School and in later
years attended a Bible College
in Los Angeles, California.
She married
Alfred Carpenter in 1930. Three
daughter were born to this
union, Marcia, JoAnn and Janice.
Marcia died in 1938 at the age
of 6. Trudie married Dwight
Hummel in 1943. The couple had a
daughter, Joyce.
In 1954, they
purchased the West Side
Laundromat in Waterloo and
operated it for two years prior
to Dwight's death in 1956. After
selling the business, Trudie and
her daughter, Joyce went to
California in 1957. They later
returned to Klemme, where
Gertrude resumed employment with
the Post Office. Her years of
employment included tenures as
the assistant postmaster and as
a clerk. She retired from the
Postal Service in 1973 after 24
years of service.
An active member
of the Klemme United Methodist
Church, Mrs. Hummel taught
Sunday School and served as a
lay delegate to the annual
conference for many years. She
was a member of the Methodist
Builders Club for nearly 25
years and hosted a prayer group
in her home for many years. She
paid for construction of a
church and a well to be built in
India and for a bicycle for the
pastors transportation.
Mrs. Hummel
enjoyed golf and bowling. She
played golf into her 80s. She
also traveled abroad
extensively. She was a long time
volunteer at Mercy Hospital,
Mason City.
Survivors include
her oldest daughter, JoAnn
Peters and her husband, Harry of
Kanawha; her youngest daughter,
Joyce LaFavre of Klemme; a total
of 50 grand and
great-grandchildren; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her first husband,
Clarence Carpenter in 1938; her
second husband, Dwight Hummel in
1956; her parents; six sisters,
Bertha, Carrie, Hulda, Maybelle,
Irene and Mildred; and three
brothers, Clarence, George and
Arthur.

Hazel E. Burgart, 1924-2002
June 4, 2002
Hazel E. Burgart, of Garner,
died on Thursday, May 30, 2002,
at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit, Mason City. She
was 78.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, June 4, at
the Cataldo Funeral Home in
Garner, with Pastor Edward Bard,
Hospice Chaplain officiating. A
guitar solo was provided by her
grandson, Andrew Ward.
Casket bearers
were Chris Smith, Billy Huerta,
Timmy Smith, Adam Ward, Rudy
Huerta, Nathan Ward, Dustin
Ward, Andrew Ward, Paul Ward,
Toby Knight and Brad Smith.
Interment was in the Concord
Township Cemetery. The Cataldo
Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements.
Hazel Elizabeth
Burgart, the daughter of Bud and
Georgia (Belle) Hull, was born
on May 9, 1924 at Garner. She
attended school in Garner. Hazel
lived in Garner where she raised
her children and worked as a
waitress at Hull's Café and the
Longhorn Café for 55 years.
On July 14, 1969,
she was married to Elmer Burgart
at Canton, South Dakota. Elmer
died in 1987.
Hazel enjoyed
spending her time having coffee
with her friends, Louise, Helen,
Ruby and Dewey. She loved her
family and especially her job as
a waitress.
She is survived
by her six children, Nancy
Carbajal of Garner, Violet
Huerta and her husband, Bill of
Stockton, California, James Ward
and his wife, Marge of Mason
City, David Ward and his wife,
Sue of Omaha, Nebraska, Kathy
Smith of Garner and Barbara Witt
and her husband, Scott of
Kanawha; 23 grandchildren; 46
great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandchild; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her husband, Elmer;
her parents; two children,
Edward and Robert Ward; two
brothers, Benny and LeRoy Hull;
and a sister, Irene Daniels.
