U.S. Air Force   WWII

OSAGE — Roman “Romey” V. Pelleymounter, 86, of Osage, passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Monsignor John Hemann officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a vigil service at 5:30 p.m. Following the funeral service, cremation will take place. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278.

He was born in Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa, on Jan. 26, 1927, to Robin A. and Mary M. (Popp) Pelleymounter. Romey graduated from Osage High School in 1945. In 1946, Romey served in World War II as a cadet and later as a sergeant in the public relations department of the United States Air Force. He retired in 1989 after 42 years as owner of Leuthold Clothiers, later known as Romey’s for Men. Romey was well known in the clothing business for his extraordinary customer service. Word of mouth would bring customers and their families back to Leuthold’s year after year. Romey loved Osage and thought it was a wonderful place to live, work, and grow. This was evident by his 42 years of service as a member of the Osage Chamber of Commerce. As an active member of the American Legion for 62 years, he held various positions including past post commander, past district commander, state vice commander and was a long time member of the memorial squad, attending over 350 funerals. He was proud of being chairman of Iowa Boy’s State for 30 years. Romey was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, the Knights of Columbus, and Sunny Brae Golf and Country Club. He had many special traits and talents, and loved singing with the Christmas Choir at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he was a life long member. He enjoyed the annual fishing trip to Canada with his brothers and friends as well as golfing, hunting, dancing, bowling and traveling. After years as a bachelor, Romey married Marjorie (Fox) Lewis on Feb. 7, 1976, in Osage and inherited four grown children. As he grew older, his love of the outdoors continued with hot air ballooning and sailing a catamaran with his daughters in San Diego, California. As his family continued to grow, Romey excelled at being a grandfather and great-grandfather, spending much time with them in Iowa, California and Missouri. In May, 2009, Romey and Marj moved to Apple Valley Assisted Living in Osage. As a lifelong resident of Mitchell County, Romey knew most of the other residents, and was able to renew friendships, create new ones and continue to dance and celebrate life. Romey and Marj later moved to Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, and most recently lived at Good Shepherd Health Center. Romey was such an inspiration because of his sincere love and devotion as a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He has shown us that each day is special and that we should make the most of each one, living patiently with a thankful and hopeful heart.

Roman is survived by his wife of 37 years, Marjorie Pelleymounter; children, Kathy McGowan (Jim) of Marietta, Georgia, Linda Brunsvold (Keith) of Mason City, Jim Lewis (Julie) of Joplin, Mo., and Mary Jane Worthing (Brooks) of Carlsbad, California; granddaughters, Tara Brunsvold Hofer (Brad) of Ames, Bobbi Jo Brunsvold Perau (Blaine) of Waukee, Alycia Brunsvold Thomsen (Will) of Cedar Falls, Bianca Rucireta and Sophia Rucireta, both of Carlsbad, Calif.,Miranda Rand and Alyssa Rand, both of Joplin, Missoiri; grandsons, Michael McGowan of Marietta, Georgia, and Nicolas Lewis of Joplin, Missouri; and great-grandchildren, Chase Hofer and Jack Thomsen.

Martin J. Thyne

Thornton — Martin J. Thyne, 46, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, in Thornton.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 Elm Street, Rockwell, with the Rev. Rodney Allers as Celebrant.

In accordance with Martin’s wishes, cremation will take place following the Mass.

Visitation will be held Friday evening, March 1, at the Sacred Heart Catholic School in Rockwell from 4 to 7 p.m., where a Knights of Columbus Rosary and a Scriptural Wake service will follow.

Martin Joseph Thyne was born on Sept. 4, 1966, in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Martin L. and Gloria Thyne. He grew up in Amesbury, Massachusetts, and graduated from Whittier Vocational Technical School from the Electrical Division. He then went on to become a Journeyman Electrician.

On Aug. 11, 1990, he was united in marriage to Kimberly A. (McKinnon) Thyne, to which there were three children: Joseph Martin, Valerie Marie and Michael Francis.

Martin and Kim moved to Thornton in November of 1990 after visiting when they became engaged. Martin wanted to see what Iowa was like and why part of Kim’s family lived there. He soon fell in love with this part of the country and started looking for a place to live and raise their children. He found it — and being from the East Coast he called Thornton “Little town living” — and he loved it!

Martin was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell; he taught CCD for 11 years within the Parish and truly enjoyed working with the kids. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1006 of Mason City, of which he was Past Grand Knight and was very proud and honored to be the last Grand Knight in the old building and the first Grand Knight in the new building. He also became a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and was a Past Faithful Navigator. He loved going to the State Conventions — they were not only a fun time for him, but he also met many Knights from all over the state of Iowa and also felt closer to his faith when he was in the Knights of Columbus family setting.

During his years as a Knight, he ran a fish fry crew, a steak fry crew, ran the pancake feeds, helped with the Tootsie Roll Drives, rang bells when he could and was always a large part of the 4th Degree Chicken Barbeque. He also spent many years bartending at the Knights of Columbus Hall for weddings, which he greatly enjoyed.

In Thornton, Martin was active within the Thornton Volunteer Fire Department, was a past EMT volunteer, co chairman for many years for Thornton Big Days, was heavily involved with Little League, and was a Boy Scout Troop Leader.

Martin was part owner of “The Electricians” in Mason City, along with his wife and Jay and Kris Leaman. He was a Master Electrician and held electrical licenses in Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, and numerous cities in Missouri. He got to see “God’s Country” as he referred to the Midwest. Martin was a very hard worker and devoted a huge part of his life to the company which he took a lot of pride in.

Martin enjoyed golfing as a family and fishing with Michael. He loved to cook — it was one of his passions and he was an awesome cook, no one went hungry when Martin was around.

Those left to cherish Martin’s memory are his loving wife of 22 years, Kimberly Thyne, Thornton; daughter, Valerie Marie and her fiancé Rusty Aldrich, Rowan; son, Michael Francis, Thornton; father, Martin Thyne, Amesbury, Mass.; father- and mother-in-law, Frank and Barbara McKinnon, Rockwell; sisters, Nancy (David) Dunham and Kathleen (Brian) Patterson; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Frank and Dolly McKinnon, Lehigh Acres, Fla., Barbara Rich, Rockwell, Jim McKinnon, Scott McKinnon, both of Rockwell, and Julie Payer, Chapin; nephews, Joseph and Joshua McKee, Davis, Dunovan, Marcus, and Lucas McKinnon; nieces, Jamie and Amanda McKinnon, Nicole Rich, and Sabrina Patterson; business partners, Jay and Kris Leaman; many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, friends, and numerous business associates.

He is preceded in death by his stillborn son, Joseph Martin, mother; Gloria Thyne; maternal and paternal grandparents; and other family members.

Born on Aug. 21, 1939, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Mildred and Carl Erbe, Bob grew up and graduated from Mason City High School. He attended Mason City Community College before leaving to go see the world.

He worked primarily doing dry wall and lived in Australia and California, before settling in Nevada several decades ago. Bob loved all kinds of sports, especially football, basketball and tennis. He also was an avid golfer. He loved traveling in his camper, hiking, riding his bicycle, seeing the sights particularly in the Southwest and visiting the Shakespeare festivals.

Bob loved working outside and volunteered countless hours at his mobile home park doing landscaping and in general attending to and bettering the environs.

He enjoyed entertaining his family and friends and showing them the sights and great bargains in Las Vegas. Every month or so, family and friends could plan on receiving one of “Bob’s Newsletters” from him with interesting news articles and various sports betting lines. He had a fun loving spirit, a keen mind and was eager to debate any subject. Many described him as “one of a kind.”
