George Raymond Gerdes Sr.
U.S. Army (1969-1970)

 

Mason City — George Raymond Gerdes Sr., 63, of Mason City died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

A Memorial Mass for George will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 N. Broadway, Manly, with the Rev. John Gossman as celebrant and the Rev. Kenneth Gehling and the Rev. Thomas McAndrews as concelebrants. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly where full military honors will be conducted by the Iowa Army National Honor Guard and the Edward Tosel American Legion Post 110.

A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 17, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapels, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with a rosary will begin at 7 p.m. with a scriptural wake to follow.

The family prefers casual attire be worn at the Memorial Mass and visitation.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left to the George R. Gerdes Sr. Memorial Fund in care of his family.

The family would like to thank Dr. Samuel Congello and the staff at the Mercy Heart Center for the exceptional care that was provided to George.

George Raymond Gerdes Sr., son of Ivan and Mary Laurel Schmitz Gerdes, was born Oct. 26, 1949, in Mason City. George was a graduate of Newman Catholic High School and was drafted in the United States Army in 1969. On Dec. 26, 1970, George was wounded, honorably discharged in 1970 and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

George met Joette Ruzich and was united in marriage on Nov. 10, 1972, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota To this union three children were born: Lisa, Tricia, and George Jr. Following George’s courageous service in the military, he attended and graduated from NIACC, receiving a Liberal Arts degree in draftsmanship. While working at FMC Linkbelt Speeder as a draftsman in Cedar Rapids, he continued his education at the University of Iowa. In 1978, the family moved back to Plymouth where he worked on the century farm and also worked for Armour as a maintenance supervisor for over 22 years, retiring in 2000.

Family was most important to George, who spent time with his children and grandchildren. He taught them how to fish and attended their sporting events. He enjoyed tractor rides, tractor pulls and spent time at the Willow Run in Mason City. He loved joking around with his friends and enjoyed camping. George was a jack of all trades, tinkering around his man cave. He was well known for his patriotism.

George was active with the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department, Edward Tosel American Legion Post 110, Mason City VFW Post 733, Vietnam Veterans Association, Disabled Veteran Association, and the Moose Lodge.

He will be missed by his wife, Joette Gerdes; children, Lisa (Scott) Cooper, Tricia (Travis) Riggott, and George Gerdes Jr. and his fiancée, Abi Wolters; grandchildren, Bailey, Taylor, Elizabeth, Samantha, Nic, Gregory, Kyle, Jake, and Carter; brother, Jim (Donna Rae) Gerdes; sisters, Anna (Dalton) McIntosh, Judy Gentry and her fiancé, Tom Nelson, and Donna Jean (Daryl) Weingart; brother-in-laws, Bill Ruzich, Tom (Joni) Ruzich, and Joe (Cheryl) Ruzich and sister-in-law, Denise (John) Funk; bonus children, John Choate and Dawn Erdmann; special cousin, Joany Holmes along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Timothy Gerdes, and In-Laws.

Mildred Hanson

FOREST CITY — Mildred Hanson, 90, of Forest City, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 18, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating.

Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 17, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City, and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Mildred Thelma Hanson was born Dec. 24, 1922, to Jens and Mattie (Twito) Charlson, on a farm in Hancock County, south of Forest City. She attended Forest City elementary schools and graduated from Forest City High School in 1941.

Mildred married Duane Herbert Hanson on July 8, 1942. After her marriage Mildred worked at Saar Produce.

In 1957 the couple moved in with her father, following her mother’s death. For several years, Mildred worked for “Look Magazine” in their Des Moines office, driving back and forth. When Duane was seriously injured at work, the family moved to Chicago during his recovery. Upon returning to Forest City, Mildred began working for GTE in 1967 in the Forest City office. She retired from the Emmetsburg GTE office in 1985.

Mildred was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed camping and motorhome travel and time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to travel to visit family in California, Florida, Canada and on the East Coast.

Mildred is survived by three grandchildren, Elke Hanson and her partner, Earnest Filby and their son, John of Chardon, Ohio, Dane (Heidi) Hanson and their children, Luke, Dru, Jacob and Leigh of Williamsburg, Va., Case Hanson of Chardon, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Duane; son, Lowell; six brothers, Chester, Milton, Melvin, Wilfred, Harold and Reuben Charlson; and three sisters, Ella Guthrie, Margaret Charlson and Rachel Bird.

MITCHELL — Juanita M. Arickx, 93, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at the Faith Home in Osage.

ST. ANSGAR — Thelma Kathlyn Eichman, 89, of St. Ansgar, died on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Thelma Kathlyn Eichman

St. Ansgar, Iowa — Thelma Kathlyn Eichman, 89, died on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral service will be on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m. at the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Peter Chang officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Visitation scheduled for Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, and will also be held one hour prior to service at the church.

Thelma was born on May 14, 1923, in White, South Dakota, to Henry O. and Emma (Graves) Arends. She attended school in Brookings, South Dakota, moving to near Milford, Iowa, while in the fifth grade.

She married Fredric Eichman on Sept. 4, 1944, in Milford. They began farming and continued until moving to St. Ansgar in 1962, when they became partners with Wayne and Dorothea Christofferson, publishing the St. Ansgar Enterprise, until Fred’s death on April 14, 1991. After raising 5 daughters, Thelma earned her GED at the age of 60.

Thelma was a member of the United Methodist Church, St. Ansgar, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school for several years, worked on many committees and was a member of the Morning Circle. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxillary in St. Ansgar.

Thelma had a love of the simple things: collecting shells, rocks, feathers and pine cones. Her love of nature was expressed in her gardening and flowers, as well as enjoying birds, squirrels and butterflies. She sewed, creating Halloween costumes, formals, professional and casual wear for all her girls.

She loved reading, crafts, art, creative writing, swimming, traveling and sitting through millions of ball games. She poured her time and energy into raising her girls, helping them discover their individualism. Thelma enjoyed making holidays special for her family. Family was her greatest love.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Emma; stepmother Florence; husband, Fredric; brothers, Ken and Russ Arends; sisters, Carlene and a baby; and stepbrother Lawrence Stykel.

Thelma is survived by five daughters; Kathy Ellingson, Barbara Madson, Jodee O’Connell (Mitchell Roberts), Dottie Eichman (Ray Davis), Patrice Jaye Eichman; grandchildren, Brandon (Tammy) Ellingson, Derick (Jasmine) Ellingson, Lee O’Connell, Guy O’Connell (Jennifer Henderson), August (Jason) Roberson, Jess Madson (Sha), Sarah Madson (Justin Overton), Aren (Mike) Westfall, Gannon Rust; great-grandchildren, Jocelyn and Madelyn Roberson, Mabel and Calvin Overton, Henry Rust and Emmalina Westfall; step grandchildren, Angie Roberts, Troy Roberts, Antwanette Davis, Ray Davis Jr. and Lee Davis; step great-grandchildren, Logan and Ryan Roberts, Brandy and Shiann Roberts, Taylor and Andrew Henderson, and five Davis step grandchildren; brother, Hank Arends; sister, Dort Christofferson; half brothers, Jim, Tom and Larry Arends; half sisters, Pat Morrish and Diann Nabor; step brother, Vernon Stykel; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her special family at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Juanita M. Arickx

Mitchell — Juanita M. Arickx, age 93, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at the Faith Home in Osage.

Juanita was born April 2, 1919, on the family farm near Mitchell, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Wilma (Zemanek) Adams. She attended Fairview Country School and St. Ansgar High School.

She married Raymond Arickx Sr. on May 4, 1938. Juanita was especially known for her love of babies and animals. She was a great baker and made wonderful chocolate angel food cakes and chocolate chip cookies. Juanita loved to sew and won a second-place ribbon on her hand-stitched cathedral quilt at the Iowa State Fair.

Juanita is survived by her children, Janice (Comisky) Schonrock (Elmer) of Winnebago, Minnesota; Raymond Arickx Jr. of St. Ansgar; Charles Arickx (Deborah), Wayne, Nebraska; Mark Arickx of Osage; 12 grandchildren: Colleen Tauke (Paul), Deanna Gard (Jerry), James Comisky (Shelley), Jason Comisky (Christy), Angie Arickx, Paul Arickx (Kelly), Dan Arickx (Dawn), Corissa Arickx, David Arickx, Josh Arickx (Sara), Adam Arickx (Sarah), and Erin Smith (David); 22 great-grandchildren; sister, Bonnie Grimm (Carl) of Osage; and sisters-in-law, Lillian Adams, Loella Adams and Edna (Adams) Roll.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond Arickx Sr. in 1992; her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Wendy Arickx; daughter-in-law, Carol Arickx; son-in-law, Maurice Comisky; two sisters, Winona Stroberg and Virginia Peronteau; and six brothers: Glen, Donald, Rene, Wayland, Dean and Gene Adams.

Brigette C. Slattum

Mason City — Brigette C. Slattum, 53, of Mason City, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at Muse-Norris Hospice, Mason City.

According to Brigette’s wishes, private family services will be held at a later date

Brigette C. Slattum was born on April 24, 1959, at Mason City, a daughter of Darrel and Mary (Simms) Slattum.

She attended Mason City Schools. Brigette enjoyed being in the company of fun and energetic people. She worked as a waitress at several area establishments. Her love of animals led her to fulfilling work at the Mason City Animal Shelter.

She will be remembered for her sense of humor and her “never give up” approach to life.

Brigette is survived by her sister, Debra (Mark) Bennett, Mustang, Oklahoma; nephews, Greg (Michelle) Bennett, Golden, Colorado; Jeff (Paola) Bennett, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; great nephews, Reese and Brady Bennett; special friends, Barb Anderson and Pat Klein; and her faithful companion, Jasper.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, and significant other, Mark Ubben.

Shirley Wohler

SIGOURNEY — Shirley Wohler, age 85, of Sigourney, went to meet her Savior Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney after an 18-month battle with MDS.

Shirley was born Feb. 23, 1927, in State Center, Iowa, the third of 11 children of Lyell and Marie (Hennies) Aves, and graduated from Mason City High School.

On Nov. 29, 1952, she married Gerald Wohler in Luverne, Minnesota The couple moved to Sigourney in 1956 to run the HiDollar Sale Company. They also worked at Keoco Auction Co. In 1980 Shirley became the head cashier for the family-run HiDollar Auction and will be dearly missed by its patrons and staff. Shirley retired from HiDollar in 2011.

Shirley was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and the LWML. They were only four ladies strong, but when they put on their purple aprons they could cook up a meal fit for a king. Shirley cherished the times they worshiped and the times they spent together. She enjoyed watching the Hawkeyes, gardening, sewing, cooking, fishing and anything that included spending time with her family.

Survivors include two children: Jerry (Emily) Wohler and Julie Wohler; two grandchildren: Benjamin Wohler and Sara Wohler, all of Sigourney; eight siblings: LuVerne Aves of Waterloo; LaVonne (Roger) Clagett of Kensett; Lila Johnston of Henning, Minnesota; Ray (Mary) Aves of Manly; Jeanette (Harold) Galligan of New Hampton; Linda (Ozzie) Dahle-Melsaether of Manly, Rick Aves of Manly and Susan Aves of Mason City; sister-in-law, Deb McArthur; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald, in 1999; sister, Donna (Ray) Olson, brother, Bobby Aves, sister-in-law, Arline Aves; brother-in-law, Bob Johnston; and two nieces: Judy Bird and Debbie Olson.

Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Hope Lutheran Church in Sigourney, with Pastor Richard Meyer officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney.

Visitation will be from 3 until 7 p.m. today, Sunday, Feb. 17, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney.

Renee Udyell Parker

Marble Rock — Funeral services for Renee Udyell Parker, 80, of Marble Rock, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marble Rock with Pastor Bob Scheurer officiating.

Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, and will continue one hour before services on Tuesday at the church.

Renee Udyell Hencken was born on Jan. 14, 1933, in rural Butler County, the daughter of Leonard and Madelin (Bryan) Hencken, and died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

She received her education in public schools, graduating from Sumner High School in 1950. Following graduation she attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Rapids.

On Aug. 25, 1955, Renee was united in marriage to Kenneth ‘Mike’ Parker in Austin, Minnesota. This union was blessed with two children: Pam and Philip.

Renee was a fourth-grade teacher in Greene for a few years. She devoted most of her time, however, to raising her family and chores on the farm.

She was a very hard worker, an expert knitter and an excellent cook.

She enjoyed reading, loved flowers, the woods, and especially hunting for Morel mushrooms. Renee spent many hours babysitting her grandchildren, all of whom she treasured.

Renee was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marble Rock. She was the church piano player for 50 years, served as a counsel member, and taught Sunday school and Bible school. Renee was also a member of the Marble Rock Library Board.

Living family members include one daughter: Pam (Marc) Clough of Marble Rock; one son: Philip (Darla) Parker of Rockford; grandchildren, Christopher Staudt, Marble Rock, Jordan Staudt, Iowa City, Michaela Staudt, Marble Rock, Wesley Parker, San Antonio, Texas, Erika Parker, Rockford, Kylie Parker, San Antonio, Texas, Kalen Parker, Rockford; two stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Janice Hencken, Huntington, Ind.; many nieces and nephews.

Renee was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Avis Hinrickson.

Duane Boyd
U.S. Army   WWII

Charles City — Duane Boyd, 92, of Charles City, Iowa, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Duane Boyd will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Jim Beranek will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and at the church an hour prior to the service.

Duane Charles Boyd was born May 7, 1920, at Marble Rock, the son of David and Maude (Wilhelm) Boyd. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1938. Duane proudly served in the United States Army during World War II.

On August 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Genevieve Fox at Waynesville, Missouri. They farmed in the Charles City area all their lives. Duane was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he held various offices, American Legion, Heritage Club, Cattlemen’s Association for 50 years, first Master Pork Producer in Floyd County, Iowa Master Farmer, and held the office of secretary of Iowa State Pork Producers for five years.

He enjoyed welding, carpentry, grilling, cooking, vegetable gardening, reading and traveling. Duane always looked forward to sharing life’s experiences with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who always looked forward to his cookies and banana bread.

Living family members include his wife, Genevieve Boyd of Charles City; a daughter, Karen (Steve) Rankin of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; a son, Leland (Kristeen) Boyd of Charles City; five grandchildren: Eric (Cheri) Rankin, Adam (Alissa) Rankin, Heidi (Aaron) Duke, Dr. Angela (Greg) Townsend, and Melissa Boyd and partner, Wendy Haroldson; nine great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Harry (Dixie) Fox of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Glenn, James and Kenneth Boyd; and a sister, Doris Marth.

Mason City — Patrick J. Paulsen, 63, of Mason City, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Mary Lois (Wilson) Laudner

Mary Lois (Wilson) Laudner of El Cajon, Calif., died Nov. 24, 2012. She was born Sept. 20, 1924, in Charles City, Iowa, the daughter of May (Holtz) and Milton Wilson.

Mary graduated from Mason City High school and then achieved a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from San Diego State College. In 1944, Mary was a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, and was an English and journalism teacher at El Capitan H.S. in the 1960s. Mary Lou attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church in El Cajon.

Her nephew, Van Wilson of Austin, Texas, survives Mary Lou.

Her sister Maude and brother Melvin and parents May and Milton Wilson preceded her in death

Delbert Dale “Scratch” Laudner
U.S. Army Air Corps   WWII

Delbert Dale “Scratch” Laudner of El Cajon, Calif., died Jan. 23, 2013.

Delbert was born on March 6, 1924, in Greene, Iowa, the son of Jonathan and Ruby Laudner. He graduated from the Rockford High School and then was employed as a machinist at Oliver Farm and Equipment Co. prior to joining the Army in Feb. 1943.

Delbert served in the Army Air Corp during World War II and flew 36 combat missions as a tail gunner over the Balkans and Germany. After being shot down in a B-17, he spent 10 months as a prisoner of war in Poland and Germany, until his release at the war’s end. Delbert received several military commendations including four Bronze Stars, Air Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Victory Metal and the Good Conduct Metal. When he was hitchhiking home unknown to two of his sisters, they picked him up to give him a ride outside of Mason City. What a reunion that was. Delbert was honorably discharged from his service Nov. 14, 1945, with the rank of staff sergeant.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at San Diego State College and worked on dam projects in Tanzania, Nigeria and Puerto Rice in the 1960s and ’70s. He worked as an inspector for the county of San Diego and as an independent contractor. Delbert retired from the Otay Water District as the operations manager, and then served two elected terms on the Otay Water District Board. Delbert was a member of the Ex-POW’s Group and the Elks Lodge.

Mary Lou and Delbert were united in marriage on July 7, 1943, in Minnesota. On July 25, 1945, they were reunited in a Catholic Church service in Washington, D.C. They both lived in Minnesota and Los Angeles in the late ’40s before settling in El Cajon. While Delbert was working on his dam projects, they kept their home in El Cajon. They traveled extensively and attended several POW reunions in Europe.

Delbert loved his gardens and took much pride in maintaining a beautiful lawn. Mary Lou was a wonderful cook and was known to can some pretty tasty vegetables from the garden. They both were philanthropists and donated land near Rockford, Iowa, to the Rockford High School and created a nature preserve west of the Fossil Park in Rockford that they donated to Floyd County.

Many summers they lived in Clear Lake where they owned several different properties, so they could be close to family and friends. Mary Lou and Delbert had a great love for each other and died one month and 29 days apart.

Three sisters, Wava Uker, Sandra (Daisey) West, Diane Massee, and one brother, Larry Laudner, survive Delbert.

His parents; three sisters: Lois Schulz, Lorraine Van den Brand, and Maxine Fullerton; and three brothers: Ronald, Marvin (Pete), and his twin brother Dallas Laudner, preceded him in death.

Memorial services were held in California on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013. Final Inurnment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, Iowa.

Clear Lake — Lee Weston Hughes, 77, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at the Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Daird Korth of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, Iowa officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Following the service his body will be cremated and inurnment will be at a later time in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt, Iowa.

Lisa Ann Vanfosson was born on February 5, 1962, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Leo and Alice (Provo) Vanfosson. She was raised in Glenwood, Iowa, and attended Glenwood High School.

Lisa was known as a “Jack of All Trades,” working various jobs throughout the years. She was a movie buff who loved watching new and old flicks as well as her favorite TV shows. In her free time Lisa enjoyed crocheting, glass etching, watching Michael’s band, and perusing various thrift and consignment stores for forgotten treasures.

As a devoted member of the A.A. program, Lisa was always available to help someone in need, friend or stranger alike. She was essential to many people’s sobriety over the years. Lisa will be remembered for her loving and caring heart and her empathy for others.
The love she shared for her family and friends was unparalleled to any other. She loved spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren, spoiling her grandchildren at every opportunity.

OSAGE — Harold A. Adams, 93, of Osage died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Msgr. John Hemann officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery in New Haven with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 4:30 p.m.

Harold was born April 1, 1919, in rural Meyer, Iowa, the son of Edward and Pauline (Hemann) Adams. He attended country schools in Iowa and Wisconsin through eighth grade. Harold served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 34th Infantry Red Bull Division in Ireland, North Africa and Italy. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Harold married Irene Steffen on Oct. 21, 1950, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven. They farmed in Mitchell County and retired to Osage in 1984. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a member of the Osage American Legion for over 50 years.

Harold is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene Adams of Osage; his daughter, Mary Adams of Ames; three grandchildren, Jeff (Foy Spicer) Diesburg of North Manchester, Indiana, Adam (Emily) Diesburg of McMinnville, Oregon, and Steven (fiancée, Jessica Culhane) Diesburg of Seattle, Washington; three great-grandchildren, J. Dashiell and J. Griffin Diesburg of McMinnville, Oregon, and Fern Diesburg of North Manchester, Indiana; four sisters, Agnes Domino of Adams, Minnesota, Lucy Theobald of Stewartville, Minnesota, Virginia (Lorenz) Lundberg of Austin, Minnesota, and Gladys (Darrel) Severson of Tacoma, Washington; four brothers, Donald (Doris) Adams of Riceville, Alex Adams of Riceville, Harry (Jeannie) Adams of Panama City, Florida, and Edward (Elizabeth) Adams of Waverly; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Jayne Adams in 1972.

She had a love for animals and they always put a smile on her face. She loved the time she spent with her family and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. She will always be remembered for never giving up for her optimistic approach for life.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Moore; children, Kaicey Follman and Carter Moore; sisters, Michelle Holt and Tami Jo Holt; mother, Penny Cummings; father, Richard Holt; and mother-in-law, Mary Moore.

Patrick Joseph was born on Feb. 14, 1950, the son of Arnold John and Christena “Berry” Paulsen in Mason City. He died on the third day after his birthday. Pat graduated from Newman High School with the class of 1968. He then attended Hamilton Business College for two years, graduating in 1970 with a degree in Cost Accounting. He then served his country in the Navy from 1970 until 1973 when he was honorably discharged. He served as a Dental Assistant at the Great Lakes Naval Base.

Upon returning to Mason City, he was engaged in his profession with IMI Cornelius for 20 years and then worked for Fleet Farm for 15 years until he became too ill to keep working.

Pat was a person willing to lend helping hand to anyone in need and truly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, often 85 of them at Christmas. He was a great Vikings fan, but his true love was watching driver Jeff Gordon and NASCAR racing. He played pool for the Willow, bike riding, doing jigsaw puzzles and going camping with his good friend Scott at his cabin on the Mississippi River near Wisconsin, canoeing and camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota. He also enjoyed playing all types of card games and visiting casinos to try his luck.

Patrick is survived by two sisters, Geraldine and her husband David Krueger, and Christine “Sis” Paulsen, all of North Mankato, Minnesota; one brother, James, and his wife, Gloria Paulsen of Mason City; sisters-in-law Lila and Patty Paulsen; brother-in-law, Larry Bitker; and many many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents, sister Dorothy Bitker, brothers Don, Thomas, Richard and Jerry Paulsen, and sister-in-law Alice Paulsen.

CLEAR LAKE — Lee Weston Hughes, 77, of Clear Lake, died Sunday Feb. 17, 2013, at the Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City, Iowa.

Lee was born June 9, 1935, rural Belmond, the son of Weston DeRush and Ada Marie (Shahan) Hughes. He attended school in Ventura. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean War November 1952-November 1955 as a SP(T) third-class.

Lee married Phyllis Baxter Amy on June 14, 1958. He worked at Red Wing Shoes, Red Wing, Minnesota, and the Clear Lake Bakery for over 38 years, retiring in 1997.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, telling jokes, playing with his grandchildren and having coffee with the boys at Town Pump and V.F.W. He enjoyed dancing and had more moves than John Travolta. He also enjoyed helping Kenny DeWitt on the farm and was well-known as an ace pool player and for his Words of Wisdoms. He was member of Clear Lake V.F.W.

Lee is survived by his three children, Debra “Amy” (Larry) Ott, Greene, Jeff (Shelly) Hughes, Faribault, Minnesota, and David (Robin ) Hughes, Mason City; and best friend, Phyllis Hughes, Clear Lake; nine grandchildren, Kaye Blong, Shane Ott, Jr. Ott, Crystal Klink, Autumn King, Brianna Hughes, Brittane Hughes, Kristina Stange and Jason Hughes; and thirteen great-grandchildren, McKennah Ott, Kaleb Ott, Logan Ott, Tyler Blong, Courtney Blong, Wesley Klink, Macabe Klink, Colton Klink, Natasha Ott, Karson Ott, Jaxson Ott, Eian Ott and Harmony King ; five brothers, Gary (JoAnn) Hughes, Franklin Tennessee, Lyle (Margaret) Hughes, Marion, Paul (Judy) Hughes, Parkersburg, Keith (Suzette) Hughes, Trusdale, and Darwin (Jan) Hughes, Clear Lake; and two sisters, Becky (Steve) Frerichs, Steamboat Rock, and Linda (Gene) Helland, Fonda, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ginny Mennenga, Barbara Pals and an infant sister, Lola Mae, and infant son, Thomas DeRush Hughes.

Dr. Elizabeth Jane “Dr. Jane” Goplerud

OSAGE — Dr. Elizabeth Jane “Dr. Jane” Goplerud, of Palmerton, Pennsylvania, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at age 93.

Private graveside services will be held at the Osage Cemetery.

She was head of the OB/GYN Department of Palmerton Hospital from 1948 to 1986. She retired after serving 38 years and delivering over 8,700 babies.

Elizabeth was born in Osage, Iowa, and graduated from Osage High School, Grinnell College (Phi Beta Kappa), University of Iowa, and Johns Hopkins University. She was very active throughout the Palmerton area. In 1972, she started Meals On Wheels and served as president for many years. She contributed generously to Palmerton Hospital and its Auxiliary, Palmerton Concourse Club, Palmerton Memorial Park, Lehigh Gap Nature Center, Palmerton Area Historical Society, Palmerton Over 60 Club and Palmerton Area Veterans Memorial.

Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Clifford Sr. and Ethel (Cromer) Goplerud. Her sister Ann, brothers Harald and Clifford Jr. predeceased her. She is the last of her immediate family.

She had a rose garden planted in Palmerton Borough Park in memory of her sister, Ann, who served with the Red Cross during World War II and the Korean War.
