Helen J. Noah

CHARLES CITY — Helen J. Noah, 92, Charles City, Iowa, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee St., Charles City. There will be a visitation at the church one hour prior to the service.

Helen Jeanette Zastrow was born in Waverly, on June 28, 1920, the daughter of R.W. and Elma Zastrow. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1938 and from the University of Iowa with a bachelor of arts degree in speech pathology in 1942. She married Keith Noah on Sept. 22, 1943, in Fresno, California.

Helen taught speech pathology in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, from the time she graduated until her marriage. She spent the remainder of her working career as a wife, homemaker, mother and travel agent. In addition to caring for her family Helen’s favorite activity was travel. Her travels included trips in the United States and to Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa.

Her many civic activities included Brownie and Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, 19th Amendment Society, American Association of University Women, Charles City Arts Council, City Improvement Association, Women’s Cemetery Association and Hospital Auxiliary. She was also active in P.E.O., Chapter CY and Trinity United Methodist Church.

Helen is survived by her children Ron (Toni) Noah, Charles City, Steve (Jane) Noah, Oskaloosa, Rick (Cindy) Noah, Charles City, and Nancy (Dirk) Tyler, Evergreen, Colorado; grandchildren Craig (Marianne Raub) Noah, Krista Noah, Mariah (Aaron) Collmann, Noelle (Aran Brosnan) Noah, Erica Noah, Kelsey Noah, Brittany (Dan) Gibeau, and Tucker Tyler as well as great-grandchildren Delaney Smith, Dillon Smith, Eveline Noah and Parker Collmann. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Virginia Z. and James F. Smith.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity United Methodist Church, Charles City, Iowa or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

The family would like to thank the Eastern Iowa Cremation Society of Cedar Rapids for their services.

Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Iowa Falls with burial at Union Cemetery.

IOWA FALLS — Melva Waite, 95, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at the Park Centre Nursing Home in Newton.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls with burial at Union Cemetery.

LAKE MILLS — Rosie J. Meyer, 92, of Lake Mills, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 on Monday, Feb. 25, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Burial will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.

IOWA FALLS — Marlyn Olson, 85, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital.

Waukee — Staci Burke, 54, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, peacefully at her home after a hard and courageous fight against ovarian cancer for more than 7 years.

Glen Arthur Theobald
U.S. Army (1954-1956)

LAKE CITY, Minnesota —Glen Arthur Theobald, known as Swede by family and friends, died peacefully of pancreatic cancer on Feb. 16, 2013, in Lake City, Minnesota, at the age of 79.

He was born in Stacyville, on Oct. 14, 1933. He graduated from Visitation High School, then served in the US Army from 1954-1956. After his discharge from the military he returned to Theobald Implement, the family business started by his father Carl. He and his brother Kenneth bought the business from Carl, and Glen continued there until his semi-retirement in 1986.

His love of the outdoors brought him to Lake City, Minnesota., where he spent his days fishing, walking, bike riding or taking his family and companion Margaret Selleseth out in his pontoon on Lake Peppin.

Glen enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren in Iowa and Colorado, and he and Margaret relaxed on the beach in Florida during the winter.

Glen is predeceased by his parents Carl and Irma, his sister Helen (Hemann), and brothers Kenneth, Roy and Robert.

He is survived by his long-time companion Margaret Selleseth of Lake City, Minnesota., brother Roger Theobald (Darla) of Omaha, his three children Deborah (Tom) of Estes Park, Colorado, Dennis (Sue) of Ventura, and Douglas (Tami) of Mount Vernon, and his four grandchildren Joshua, Chase, Rheanna and Nicole.

Glen will be laid to rest next to his parents, sister Helen and brother Roy in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Stacyville. At his request, a private ceremony for immediate family will be held at a later date.


Dorothy V. Paine

TERRE HAUTE, Minnesota. — Dorothy V. Paine, 91, of Terre Haute and formerly of Mason City, passed away at 10:10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, in Cobblestone Crossings Health Campus in Terre Haute.

She was born in Bloomington, Illinois, on Aug. 27, 1921, to Hilton Colby Taylor and Marie Schumacher Taylor. She grew up in Bloomington, Illinois, till age 9, before moving to Atlanta, Ill. Dorothy was a 1939 graduate of Atlanta High School, and was a 1944 graduate of Illinois State University. She was a retired school teacher, having taught at various schools including; Hopedale, Illinois, Stanford, Illinois, Phoenix, Arizona, and Mason City. Her memberships include the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mason City, and the Mason City Order of Eastern Star. She attended Union Baptist Church in Terre Haute & was a longtime volunteer at Mercy Hospital in Mason City. Dorothy also was an avid knitter, generously giving her time and talent to donate knitted items for church charities.

She is survived by two sons, Douglas H. Paine and wife Linda of Terre Haute, and Gregory H. Paine and wife Diane of Oro Valley, Arizona. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Drew H. Paine of Seattle, Washington, Blake D. Paine of Evanston, Illinois, and Tavia A. Paine of Oro Valley, Arizona, as well as one sister, Nelle Conway of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold W. Paine on May 25, 2007, as well as two infant sisters, Mary Elizabeth Taylor and Beverly Ann Taylor.

Funeral services will be held in DeBaun Springhill Chapel on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 3 p.m., with Pastor Rod Maris officiating. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. in DeBaun Springhill Chapel.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has been chosen, with burial of ashes at a later date in Park Hills Cemetery in Bloomington, Illinois. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mason City, or Union Baptist Church in Terre Haute, Indiana, in Dorothy’s memory.

Victor Benson

FOREST CITY — Victor Benson, 91, of Forest City, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 24, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating.

Victor James Benson was born October 4, 1921, on a farm near Britt, Iowa, to Torsten “Tom” and Hannah (Vorland) Benson.

Victor worked at the Strand Dairy and farmed until his retirement in 2011.

Victor married Blanche Charlson on June 20, 1944, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. They rented several farms before purchasing their farm northeast of Forest City. They resided there until they moved into the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City in 2012.

Victor always liked to sing and play his guitar and harmonica. He and Blanche entertained many groups with their singing over the years. He was a member of the Forest City Barbershop Chorus for many years and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. He also served on the Forest City Creamery Board.

Survivors include his wife, Blanche; and their six children and spouses, Janet (Tom) Oakleaf, James (Jane) Benson, Carol (Dan) Edmondson, Dale (Susan) Benson, Linda (Kirk) Whittlesey and Mark Benson.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; four step- grandchildren; one step- great-grandchild, and sisters, Thelma Smith, Dorothy Etzen, Marjorie Anderson; and brother, Robert Benson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jeremy Benson; sister, Alice Gerdes; brother, Norman Benson and his twin brother, Vance Benson.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Jeremy Benson Scholarship Fund, Forest City Good Samaritan Society or Hospice of North Iowa.

Tassie “Dolly” Striggles was born March 23, 1927, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Demos and Georgia (Alexandropoulos) Striggles. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines in 1945 and married James P. Preftakes of Mason City on May 1, 1949.

Dolly worked in the computer field for more than 50 years, beginning with the state of Iowa, continuing with the Mason City public school system and North Iowa Area Community College, and ending as a computer-operations manager at Sperry and UNISYS until her retirement in 1990.

She was a longtime member of the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Mason City, and was active in many church endeavors, including Philoptochos, choir and the annual Greek Festival.

Dolly enjoyed her gardening, flowers and reading. She loved her church, her husband, her children, her family and her friends.

We loved her generous, gracious spirit. We loved her sweet smile and girlish giggle. We miss you, MOM. We will always love you.

Dolly is survived by her daughter, Pamela P. Wingrod of Havertown, Pennsylvania; son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas and Renee Preftakes of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sisters, Anna Pappageorge of Copperopolis, California, and Olympia (Bia) Papafrangos of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; nephews, Charles Papafrangos and Phillip Striggles; brother, Theodore Striggles; and husband, James, in 2001.

Frances B. Neuberger

GARNER, Iowa — Frances B. Neuberger, age 93, most recently of Garner, Iowa, formerly a longtime resident of the Klemme, Iowa, area, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 10:30 a.m., at the Klemme United Methodist Church, Klemme, Iowa. The Rev. Janet Rieckoff-Faris will be officiating. Burial will be in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Andrews Funeral Home, 528 E. Main St., Klemme, and continues one hour prior to the services at church Wednesday.

Frances B. Schulz, the daughter of Frank and Getrude (Geddes) Schulz, was born on a farm near Miller, Iowa, on Jan. 4, 1920. She attended Miller School and graduated from Garner High School in the class of 1937.

Frances was united in marriage to Lester Neuberger of Klemme on Aug. 9, 1942, in the Klemme United Methodist Church. Their union was blessed with three children: Claudia, Franklin and Mark.

Frances and Lester lived most of their married life on a farm east of Klemme, where she was a devoted wife and partner in the duties of the farm with her husband, Lester. During their life on the farm, Frances focused much of her energies and love on providing a nurturing home for her family. She worked hard alongside her husband and always raised a large garden and chickens.

She was a wonderful cook and was known for her delectable fried chicken, canned foods and baked delights.

Frances was a member of the Klemme United Methodist Church, U.M.W. circle and Grandmother’s Club, serving in office in each.

She truly loved her family and her church. Her pastimes were many including reading, coffee club, playing cards and bingo, bird and horse watching, writing letters, dancing and sending greeting cards. Frances never missed the opportunity to send a card or note to her family and friends and their extended family.

Frances and Lester enjoyed travels with their children to many places around the U.S. In more recent times Frances and Claudia looked forward to trips and occasions together, enjoying their special mother/daughter bond.

After Frances and Lester moved into the town of Klemme from the farm, the couple spent 24 winters in Weslaco, Texas, where they made countless friends from throughout the country. Lester preceded Frances in death in June 2004.

Following his passing, Frances moved to make her home at the Prairie View Apartments in Garner, where she had resided since that time.

All who had the privilege of crossing in her life journey will remember her love for others, her wonderful and warm personality, quick wit, bountiful faith, and her gentle nature toward all human kind.

Frances loved to be called Grandma and truly cherished times spent in the presence of young people. She loved to share stories of growing up and was always up for an adventure.

Frances leaves to mourn her memory, a daughter, Claudia Neuberger, Golden Valley, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Kari (Neuberger-Eidemiller-Gatlin) and husband ,Jason, Apollo Beach, Florida., Kyle (Beth) Neuberger, Mason City, Iowa, Aaron Opheim, Allison, Iowa, and Megan (Opheim) Bagley and husband Brent, Ames, Iowa; her daughter-in-law, Sinva (Neuberger) Ophiem and husband, Randy, Mason City, Iowa; great grandchildren, Tyler and Trevor Eidemiller, Ella Rose Bagley, Destinee Gatlin and Jaxon Tate; also numerous special nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester W. Neuberger; son, Mark in 1975, and son Franklin in 1988; and a brother, Robert Schulz and his wife, Muriel.

Corrie Born

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — Corrie Born, 90, of Sioux Center, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

A visitation was held Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m., with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A funeral service will be held today, Monday, at 10 a.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center with the Rev. A.T. VerGunst officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Kornelisje (Corrie) Born was born to Jan and Aaltje Neijmeijer on Jan. 29, 1923, in Doornspijk, the Netherlands. She was raised as a young girl in rural Holland. She took a sewing job at age 15. She met her future husband, Gerrit, when he was visiting her cousin and boarding in their home.

She married Gerrit Jan Born on March 16, 1944, in Oosterwolde, the Netherlands. They spent their first few married years in the Netherlands. In 1949, Corrie and Gerrit immigrated to the United States with their two sons, Abe and Adrie. Shortly after their arrival they settled in Hull, Iowa, where Gerrit was employed by the city of Hull from 1953 to 1979.

Corrie was able to stay home and be a full-time mom to Abe and Adrie. She lovingly cared for them and will be remembered as a person who loved dogs, birds and flowers. She loved trees and would enjoy spending quiet times enjoying nature.

For many years, Corrie and Gerrit spent their summer weeks at Round Lake, Minnesota. They also enjoyed many winters in Arizona. The children and grandchildren have fond memories of spending family time at the lake and enjoying those special times there. In 1989, Corrie and Gerrit moved to Sioux Center. In March of 2008, Corrie moved to Kosgrove where she was lovingly cared for by the staff.

Although unable to physically attend church, Corrie was faithfully visited by the consistory of Netherlands Reformed Church in Sioux Center.

Surviving Corrie are her two sons and daughters-in-law: Abraham “Abe” and Linda Born of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Adrie “Dutch” and Shirley Born of Sioux Center, Iowa.

Corrie had three grandchildren: Dr. Brent Born and his wife, Tammy of Kenyon, Minnesota, Sheila De Jong and her husband, Kelly of Sioux Center and Alan Born and his wife, Loran of Pella, Iowa; 13 great-grandchildren: Gerrit Born, Madison Born, Corrie Born, Adrie Joshua “AJ” Born, Brayden and Carly Sutherland, Keaton, Samuel, Maria and Elizabeth De Jong, Aaron, Nathan and Kellyn Born.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Gerrit Jan; two sisters: Aaltje Visch and Hendrikje Uit de flesh. Also preceding her was Katelyn De Jong, a great-granddaughter.

Staci Burke

Waukee — Staci Burke, 54, died peacefully at her home Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, after a hard and courageous fight against ovarian cancer for more than seven years.

Staci was born to Jake and Jacque Burke in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on Aug. 11, 1958. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1976. She attended the University of Iowa, earning her B.A., and then continued her education at Iowa State University, where she received a master’s degree.

In 1985 she started working in sales and sales management for Northwestern Bell Yellow Pages. After 27 years of service, she retired in April 2012.

Staci loved traveling, music, concerts with her friends, dancing, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and spending time with family and friends. She had a passion for life. We will all miss her radiant smile, her beautiful blue eyes and her generosity. Most of all, we will miss her love. We feel very blessed that she was our wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend.

Her memory will be cherished by her loving husband, Phil Rawson, Phil’s children, Eric, Jodi, Tanya and Jacob; her mother, Jacque; her brother Tom (Peggy) and their sons, Colin and Jake Burke; and her sister Shawn (Paul Scott) and their children, Caroline, Meredith and Burke Scott.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jake Burke.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines, with Chaplain Pam Avaux officiating.

Leo John Streit

Stacyville, Iowa—Leo John Streit, 95, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday morning, Feb. 21, 2013, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, Feb. 25, at 10:30 a.m. at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with Monsignor John Hemann officiating.

Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, Feb. 24, from 5 until 8 p.m. at Visitation Church with a 5 p.m. rosary service and an 8 p.m. vigil service.

He was born in Ghent, Minnesota, on Oct. 7, 1917, to Nick and Rose (Wallrich) Streit. In 1921, the family moved to a farm outside of Stacyville where Leo grew up, lived and farmed for the rest of his life.

Leo married Dorothy (Falk) Meek, a widow with two young sons, on May 1, 1954. Over the next 10 years they added five additional boys to their family. Leo was a true and loving father who was equally proud of all seven of his sons.

Leo was a devoted husband, a loving father and especially loved being a grandpa and great-grandpa. He was admired for his great work ethic and ever-present cheerfulness and humor. He was a grain and livestock farmer, licensed electrician, member of the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of the Foresters. Leo enjoyed woodworking, fixing things in his workshop and passing his knowledge on to his sons.

Leo is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his sister, Therese Johnson; sons, Bob Meek (Greta), Nick Streit (Sue), Tom Streit (Linda), Paul Streit (Linda), Ted Streit (Diane); daughter-in-law Becky Meek; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding Leo in death are sons, Edward Streit in 1962 and Michael Meek in 2011; brother, John Streit; and sisters, Esther Russell and Marcella Koenigs.

Daniel Joseph Fix Sr.
U.S. Army   WWII

CEDAR FALLS — Daniel Joseph Fix Sr., 86, of Cedar Falls, died Friday at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center of congestive heart failure.

He was born April 3, 1926, in Mandan, N.D., son of Aloysius A. and Wilhelmina Paul Fix. He married Joy Maurine Edgington on Feb. 4, 1948, in Mason City. She died March 24, 1999.

In 1958, Daniel founded D& J Oil Co., a distributorship for petroleum products. He also owned 21 gas stations from Nora Springs to Iowa City. In 1974 he founded Fix Tire Co. in Waterloo, retiring in 1989. He also co-owned several taverns in the local area.

Daniel was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army as a paratrooper.

He is survived by six sons: Daniel J. Jr. (Sharon) of Cedar Falls, Doug J. (Theresa) of Omaha, Neb., Dave J. (Ana Celia) of Cedar Falls, Dennis J. of Waterloo, Donald J. (Joan) of Mason City, Dean J. (Jacqueline) of Virginia; three daughters: Kathryn A. Manahl of Minneapolis, Mary M. (Mark) Kwiatowski of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Patricia L.Siems of Waterloo; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert; and a sister, Violet.

Services will be 9 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Waterloo, with entombment in Mt. Olivet Mausoleum, Waterloo, where military honors will be conducted by the Waterloo and Evansdale Amvets Posts 19 & 31, with flag presentation by the Iowa Army Honor Guard.

Public visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. 4th Degree Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil.

Public visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.

ALTON — Raymond Miller, 87, of Orange City, formerly of Hampton and Mason City, and Indiana, died on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at his daughter’s home in Alton, Iowa.

Funeral service will be 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Daumer will officiate.

There will be a graveside service at 3 p.m. Monday at the Hampton City Cemetery, with the Rev. Karl Bollhagen officiating.

James G. Schoolcraft
U.S. Armed Forces (38 years)

HUDSON, Iowa — James G. Schoolcraft, 74, of Hudson, died on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born on Jan. 5, 1939, in Renwick, Iowa, son of George and Grace Lamfers Schoolcraft. He graduated from Tulsa Welding School with honors, receiving a diploma in welding, and graduated with honors from Port Huemene Naval School in California.

James married Dorothy Kalvig on Sept. 14, 1958, at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, Iowa. He served in the Armed Forces for 38 years, receiving an honorable discharge in 1999.

He owned and operated Jim’s Portable Welding and Fabrication for more than 46 years. He semi-retired in 2004 and went to work three days a week for KW Electric in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

He was a member of Hudson AmVet Post 82 and American Legion Post 559. He was a life member of the NERA, served as a church deacon, usher, council member and belonged to several antique tractor clubs.

James is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three daughters: Abbie J. Schoolcraft of Anamosa, Garnet-Rae S. (Brian) Wright of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Jessie Schoolcraft of Hudson; two brothers: Fred Schoolcraft of Dungan, Iowa, and Ben (Martha) Lamfers of Jenison, Michigan; four sisters: AnnaMae Pannhoff, Lucille Nelson Kalvig, Opal Schoolcraft and Bernice (Vern) Kauffman, all of Mason City, Iowa.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Arthur Schoolcraft.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the rural Zion Lutheran Church, Hudson.

Burial will be in Hudson Cemetery, Hudson, Iowa, with military rites by the Hudson AmVet Post No. 82 and the Iowa National Guard.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday before the services at church.
