ACKLEY - William M. Cooper, 40, of Ackley died Saturday, May 19, 2012, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services for William M. Cooper will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, 521 Rocksylvania Ave., Iowa Falls.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at the Linn's Funeral Home, 1521 Washington Ave., Iowa Falls.

ALLISON - Alice Johnson, 96, of Allison, died May 19, 2012, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.

Jane E. Palmer

Kensett - Jane E. Palmer, 84, of Kensett died Monday, May 14, 2012, at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

Jane was born Sept. 29, 1927. She married Charles on April 13, 1945. She loved to read and enjoyed gardening. She was a longtime resident of Kensett.

Jane is survived by her sons, Charles R., Richard H., Karl J., and Stephen D., as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles H., and by daughters Norma and Sandra.

Stella Marie (Cory) Jensen

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. - Stella Marie (Cory) Jensen, 75, of Morristown, Tenn., passed away Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System. She was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William "Basil" and Lena Lucas Cory; five brothers; and one sister.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Earl L Jenson; daughter, Sherry (Emery) Gilliam; son, Bruce Jensen; grandchildren, Cory (Trish) Gilliam, Andrew (Julie) Gilliam, Joe (Alisha) Gilliam, Dennis Gilliam, and Sgt. Adam (Amanda) Gilliam; great-grandchildren, Keyshawn Gilliam, John Gilliam, Kendra Gilliam, and Cheyene Cureton; brother, Ernest Cory; and sisters, Marge Cory Wright and Elberta Cory Crowe.

Alice Kramer

CLEAR LAKE - Alice Kramer, 97, of 1509 W. Seventh Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Sunday May 20, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at the Evangelical Free Church, 1310 Highway 18 W., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dan Jordan officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, Iowa, and then one hour before the service at the church.

Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake. Family suggests memorials to Evangelical Free Church or American Heart Association.

Alice was born Feb. 15, 191,5 on a farm near Wellsburg, the daughter of John and Anna (Ross) Bakker. She attended country school at Shiloh No. 8 Wellsburg, Iowa. She worked at home and the family farm. Alice married Harold Kramer on Feb. 21, 1935. When the children were old enough to take care of themselves, she started working at different restaurants and then owned and operated Alice's Corner Café in Mason City for many years. Alice retired at age 73. She loved to cook for her family and do quilting and fancy work. Alice is a member of the Evangelical Free Church.

Alice is survived by six children: Janice Lemon and her husband Gerald "Gary", Fairmont, Minn.; Joyce Pruismann and her husband James, Bondurant; Mervin Kramer and his wife Patricia, Urbandale; Larry Kramer and his wife Joan, Poulsbo, Wash.; Julie Hanson and her husband James, Clear Lake; and George Kramer and his wife Mary, Baudette, Minn.; grandmother of 27, great-grandmother of 48, great-great-grandmother of six; her brother Meint Bakker and his wife Bonita, Madison, Wis., daughter-in-law Barb Halsne, Blairsburg, and several nieces and nephews.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold (Nov. 23, 2004), daughter JoAnn Kalvig, son Dennis Kramer, infant son Leon Kramer; grandsons Paul Kramer and Jeff Pruismann, granddaughter Alice Kalvig, great-granddaughter Kaitlin Hanson; son-in-law Elmer Kalvig and brothers Gratus, Everett, Gerrit, and Mennie Bakker.

Myron L. Lewis

MASON CITY - Myron L. "Lefty" Lewis, 83, of Mason City, died Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Muse Norris Hospice, Mason City.

According to his wishes, Lefty has been cremated. The family will hold memorial services at a later date.

As an expression of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Lefty Lewis Memorial Fund, in care of Northwestern States Credit Union, 1314 Fourth St. S.W., Mason City, IA 50401. Lefty's fund will be used to encourage youngsters of all ages to fish.

Myron L. "Lefty" Lewis was born June 10, 1928, at Mason City, a son of Milton Loren and Blanche Ione (Wilson) Lewis. He was united in marriage to Almeda Fay Rinenberg on June 14, 1952, at Mason City.

Lefty graduated from Mason City High School in 1947, where he played football and basketball and received many honors, playing on many highly ranked teams. He was the center on the basketball team, where he earned his nickname "Lefty" from his left-handed hook shots. He later attended Drake University, on a football scholarship.

He served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Camp Sama, Japan, during the Korean War.
A long-time Mason City Police officer, Lefty began his service on April 25, 1953, with the police force, retiring July 5, 1991. On March 1, 1965, he received the National Life Saving Award from the National Association of Police Officers for his rescue efforts following a car accident on the 12th Street Northeast bridge.

In addition to his police work, he also worked as a security guard at Mercy Hospital, and moved snow for various businesses.

As a ham radio operator, Lefty made friends' worldwide. He loved to fish for walleyes in Clear Lake. He enjoyed Iowa football and Mohawk football, (especially during the Barry Alvarez era) when he was active in the Booster Club.

Lefty looked forward to daily visits to Pro's Sandwich Shop, for meetings with the "guys," and following his grandchildren's school and sports activities.

He is survived by his wife, Almeda "Pete" Lewis, Mason City; four children, Darrell Lewis, Mason City, Michele (Tom) Garfin, River Falls, Wis., Steven Lewis and Vicki French, Mason City, Greg (Anne) Lewis, Mason City; a brother, Darrell (Jo) Lewis, Scottsdale, Arizona; sister, Marjorie Jaspers, Northwood; grandchildren, Sarah (Jon) Lewis Foss, Des Moines, Katherine Lewis, Iowa City, Jessica Garfin, Denver, Colo., Mark Garfin, River Falls, Wis., Jacob Garfin, River falls, Wis., Max Lewis, Dubuque, Ben Lewis, Mason City, and Elizabeth Lewis, Mason City; great-grandson, Wyatt Foss, Des Moines; nieces and nephews, John Lewis, Lonette Lewis, Sheri Jo Wagner, Ron Jaspers, Don Jaspers, and Brad Jaspers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother in-law, Maynard Jaspers.

Marcielle Elaine "Marty" Millard

NORTHWOOD -Marcielle Elaine "Marty" Millard, 88, Northwood, died Monday, May 21, 2012, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2012, the First Lutheran Church, 309 North 9th Street, Northwood, with Pastor Karen Rossing Grandall officiating. Inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 West, Mason City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the church.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.

Marty was born on Nov. 16, 1923, in Mason City, the daughter of Arthur and Alvina (Jaacks) Rowe. Marty was united in marriage to Robert Millard on Feb. 15, 1948, in Mason City. Marty graduated from Mason City High School, and worked for a short period before her marriage for Cap & Gown in Mason City.

After their marriage, they farmed in Iowa for over 50 years. Marty was active in the Green Thumb Garden Club in Northwood, and was well known for her beautiful floral arrangements entered in the Worth County Fair. Marty loved to play bridge and golfed regularly. Bob and Marty traveled to Southern Texas in their motor home every winter for many years. The also fished in Northern Minnesota, South Dakota, and Canada on family vacations in the summer. Marty loved to listen to music even in her recent years with progressive Alzheimer's she would hum along to a song and tap her hands to the beat.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Bob Millard of Northwood; her children, Jillanne Millard of Rochester, Minn., Amy (Bob) Bulver of Owatonna, Minn., and JoEllen (Dave) Uhl of Eden Prairie, Minn.; four grandchildren, Jesse Bachtle, Jordan Bachtle-Robinson, and Taylor and Katelyn Uhl; one great-granddaughter, Cadence Robinson-Wright; as well as other extended family members and friends.

Marty was preceded in death by two children, Kathy and Michael Millard; her brothers, Arthur and Chester Rowe; her sisters, Priscilla Overturf and Bonnie Rowe; and her parents, Arthur and Alvina Rowe.

Bernice M. Truesdell

VENTURA - Bernice M. Truesdell, 95, of Ventura, died Jan. 5, 2012, at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 26, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating. Family will greet friends one hour before the service.

Bernice was born in Dickens on Nov. 21, 1916, the daughter of Dewey and Pearl (Barringer) Culver. During her school years, she was an outstanding athlete, graduating from Dickens High School in 1934. After a trip to the West Coast she attended a business school in St. Cloud, Minn.

On Sept.21, 1935 she married Frank Truesdell, at that time a teacher at Zion. Son Bill was born in 1938, and in 1942 the family moved to Woden, where Frank was Superintendent of Schools.
Bernice worked part time at the Woden Post Office. They moved to Hayfield in 1948, Bernice shared the head cook job at Hayfield Consolidated Schools. In 1957 they moved to Gilmore City, then Galva in 1963 and Rembrandt in 1964. Frank retired at Rembrandt in 1977 and they moved to Ventura.

Bernice enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, and gardening, but her great love and enjoyment was her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and going to all their sports events.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ventura, and the Ventura Garden Club. Bridge was fun, but most of her time was spent with her many flowers, sewing (she made most of her clothes), and preparing and cooking, garden fruits and vegetables and the game and fish that Frank would bring home.

Grandma Bernice always had pickled fish, home baked bars, homemade frozen fruit, homemade cookies, and a variety of cooked meat. She knew the names of most of the Cubs, Twins, and Braves in the '50s and '60s, and went to several Twins, Cubs, and Braves games.

Left to cherish her memories are son Bill (Laura) Truesdell, of Clear Lake, grandson Randy (Kathy) Truesdell, of Clear Lake, granddaughters Stefanie (Mark) Camenisch of Boone, Peggy Adams of Urbandale, and Paula Lindsley of Marengo, Ill., and great-grandchildren Tanner and Parker Truesdell, Bailey and Macie Camenisch, Paige and Spencer Lindsley, and Aubrianna Adams.
She was preceded in death by her parents, twin brother Bernard, brother Gerald, sisters Thelma Leighter, Dorothy Brenda and Cleo Watson and her husband Frank Truesdell.

Dale Beyer

OSAGE - Dale William Beyer, age 74, of Charles City and formerly of the Mitchell area, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 25, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Pastor Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.

Dale was born Nov. 11, 1937, in Mitchell County, the son of George and Elfrieda (Hackbarth) Beyer. He graduated from Mitchell High School. Dale married Shirley Hutzell in 1959. In his early years he worked as a caretaker at the Osage Cemetery. Dale was a big fan of Elvis Presley and enjoyed Christmas. He had a lot of love for his family and will be greatly missed.

Dale is survived by two daughters: Candace Beyer of St. Peter, Minn., and Kim (Craig) Reed of Fairmont, Minn.; three grandchildren: Blake Engelby, Dustin Schwebke and Kristina Smith; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Dennis (Judy) Beyer of Fredericksburg, Dean (Anola) Beyer of Mitchell, George (Kris) Beyer of Mitchell; and two sisters: Dallas (Glen) Heinzerling of Osage, and Delores Hucke of Ottertail, Minn.

Stanley was born March 3, 1922, in Joice, the son of Stanley Louis and Lavinia (Peedan) Haynes. His family moved to Mason City in 1923. Stanley graduated from Mason City High School in 1940, and continued his education at Mason City Junior College.

He served in the U.S. Army (Co. "D" 387th Infantry - 97th Infantry Division) for 2½ years during WWII, stationed in Europe, Asia and the Occupation of Japan.

Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Stanley enrolled at Iowa State University in Ames, graduating in 1949 with a B.S. degree in architectural engineering. While attending Iowa State University Stanley became a member of Pi Kappa Psi.

He married Alice Fiedler on Sept. 4, 1948, in Ottumwa. Over the years, Stanley worked in Des Moines, Clinton, Galesburg, Ill., and back to Mason City in 1981. Stanley retired from Accord Architects in 1987, and from private practice in 1997. He also donated his time and expertise by designing the gazebo in East Park.

Stanley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served two terms as an elder. He was also a member of the VFW, Masonic Lodge - High Twelve Club, and the Mason City Riverfront Commission where he served two terms as president.

Stanley was a strong believer in the Meals on Wheels program and enjoyed delivering meals to those in need. He also enjoyed woodworking, furniture repair, pheasant hunting, crossword puzzles and golf.

Stanley is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alice Haynes of Mason City; his daughter, Susan Haynes of Joliet, Ill.; two grandchildren: Samuel and Sophia; nieces and nephews, John Pauley Jr. and wife, JoAnn, of Portland, Ore., Tom Pauley and wife, Ava, of Forest City, Tris Hasapopoulos and husband, John, of White Bear Lake, Minn., David Haynes and wife, Lynn, of St. Paul, Minn., Max Haynes and wife, Jane, of Maple Grove, Minn., and Laurie Shimek and husband, Jerry, of Cottage Grove, Minn.; and daughter-in-law Robin Ward of Truckee, Calif. He is also survived by his dog "Dolly' and his cat "Hobie."

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Peter in 1974 and Christopher in 2007; a daughter in infancy; his brother, William Haynes and wife, Catherine; his sister, Domini Pauley and husband, John; his mother and father-in-law, Frank and Sue Fiedler; and sister-in-law Janet Goedeke and husband, Roy.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Heritage Care Center and Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa for the excellent care Stanley received.

Visitation will be held at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton on Thursday, May 24, from 5-7 p.m. An additional visitation will be held at Pedrick's Funeral Home in Keosauqua on Saturday, May 26, at 1:30 p.m. with the funeral to follow at 2:30 p.m.

Cards and memorials may be left at either funeral home or mailed to Mary Meade. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or the Maple Grove Cemetery in Cantril.

GRAFTON - Olive Irene (Wheeler) Trettin, 99, of Grafton, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton with Pastor Barbara M. Wills officiating. Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1:15 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. After services, the family will greet relatives and friends in the church hall.

Kathy Joy Cira

MASON CITY - Kathy Joy Cira, 60, of 1410 Ninth St. S.W., Mason City, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at the I.O.O.F. Home, in Mason City, due to complications of frontotemporal dementia.

Celebration of Kathy's Life will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Paul Nelson and the Rev. Jeni Bohls officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Visitation will be on Monday from 5-7 p.m. at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, in Mason City, Iowa and also one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to St. James Lutheran Church, I.O.O.F Home or Salvation Army Adult Day Health Center.

Kathy was born on Nov. 12, 1951, in Alexandria, Minn., the daughter of Charlie and Lenora (Olson) Martin. She graduated from Sibley High School, in West St. Paul, Minn., in 1969 and then attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She later completed her nursing degree in Rochester, Minn., and worked at the University of Minnesota Hospital.

Kathy married Louis Cira on May 31, 1980, in Mendota Heights, Minn. They moved to Mason City where she worked for North Iowa Medical Center. After her daughters were born she became a stay-at-home mom and later went to work for McDonald's.

Kathy was a very loving mother and wife and never missed any of her daughter's events. She enjoyed baking, gardening and singing in the church choir.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Kathy is survived by her loving family, husband Louis "Lou" Cira, Mason City; daughters Christa Cira, San Diego, Calif. and Julia Cira, Clear Lake; six brothers and sisters Sandra Martin, St. Paul, Minn., Leann (Roger) Glenna, N. St. Paul, Minn., Charles Martin, Milwaukee, Wis., Susan (John) Loskota, Lake Elmo, Minn., Paul Martin, Center City, Minn. and Lori (Dave) Lundin, Maple Grove, Minn.; mother-in-law Alice Cira, Cedar Rapids; her aunt Marge Olson, Wauwatosa, Wis.; brothers-in-law Stan Pfeil, St. Paul, Minn., Mike (Laura) Cira, Marion and Joe (Diana) Cira, Cedar Rapids; and sisters-in-law Janet (Earl) Crutchley, Imperial, Mo. and Joanne (Steven) Carfrae, Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Linda Pfeil and Janice Martin, and brother James Martin.

The family would like to thank Salvation Army Adult Day Health Center, I.O.O.F. Home, and Hospice for the wonderful care that was given to Kathy.

Stephen Paul "Steve" Dawson
 

CABOT, Ark. - Stephen "Steve" Paul Dawson, age 54, formerly of Britt, passed away on Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Hospice Home Care in Little Rock, Ark., after a very courageous battle with cancer.

Steve was born Dec. 30, 1957, in Rawlins, WY. His family later moved to Britt, where he attended elementary and high school. Steve later moved to Marshalltown, and then to Arkansas with his job.

Steve was a very talented artist of drawings. He loved wood working, remodeling homes, and working outside.His passion was cooking, and he had begun writing his own cookbook. Family and friends will remember him as a hard worker who never complained and didn't let anything stop him. He will also be remembered as having a "heart bigger than the world." He was always there for you.

He is survived by his sister Jeneil (David) Smith of Danville, Calif., his sister Melanie (Dennis) Mitchell of Mason City, his brother Paul (Linda) Dawson of Newton, nephew Brandon (Melissa) Smith of Livermore, Calif., nephew Jordan Smith and fiancee Ashley Chavez of Phoenix, Ariz., niece Heather Dawson of Newton, and great nieces Angel and Carissa of Newton. He was looking forward to the arrival in July of great-nephew Baby Chase to Brandon and Melissa. He is also survived by many wonderful friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, his mother, both sets of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

BUFFALO CENTER -Esther Grimes, 96, life long resident of Buffalo Center, died Wednesday, May 23, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, May 28, at the First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Perry Aalgaard officiating. Burial will be at Olena Mound Cemetery.

Olive was born Sept. 15, 1912, on the family farm near McIntire, the daughter of Irvin and Cora (Shumway) Wheeler. She graduated from McIntire High School and Hamilton Business College in Mason City. On Sept. 15, 1942, Olive married Kermit Trettin at St. Joseph, Mo. They made their home on a farm near Grafton. She enjoyed church, travel, quilting, counted cross stitch, sewing, knitting and games.

Olive is survived by her children, Mardell (Gary) Porter of Sandusky, Ohio, Robert (Mary) Trettin of Waterloo, Tom (Jean) Trettin of Herndon, Va.; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kermit in 1991; one grandson; one sister; and two brothers.
