CITY - Joan K. Barlow, 77, died
Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Jefferson
County Health Center, Fairfield.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at
10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, at St.
Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth Street
S.E., with the Rev. Kenneth B. Gehling
presiding as well as other priests of
the Archdiocese of Dubuque
concelebrating.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m.
Friday, May 18, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore
Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E.,
Mason City, with a wake service
beginning at 7 p.m conducted by Deacon
Mike Byrne and Karen Byrne.
Joan Kathryn (Sheehy) Barlow was born on
Nov. 3, 1934, in Mason City, the
daughter of John and Rose (Krieger)
Sheehy. She graduated from Holy Family
High School in 1953. After graduation,
she worked as a nurse's aide at St.
Joseph Mercy Hospital. She also worked
at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company
as an operator, collections agent, and
helped provide public relations
including instructing local groups on
the use of the rotary dial telephone.
She was united in marriage to Jack
Arnold Barlow on July 2, 1955, at Holy
Family Catholic Church in Mason City.
They made their home in Mason City. She
was the mother to three children,
Michele, Ann and Patrick. She devoted
her life to the care and upbringing of
her children. Joan also participated in
many church activities serving as
lector, communion minister, and was
active in the ladies church circles. Her
husband Jack entered training for the
permanent diaconate for the Archdiocese
of Dubuque in 1975. Throughout this time
until his death, they collaborated on
many aspects of ministry at St. Joseph
Church including marriage preparation
retreats and sponsor couples. Her
efforts also included working on many
TEC retreats, the Newman Booster Club,
and as a volunteer at Birthright.
Joan held many hobbies in her life
including making ceramics, flower
arranging, and organizing family
genealogy with equal pride in her German
and Irish heritage. She loved big band
music and fell in love with her husband
on the dance floor. She was a strong
advocate for her children's education
and faith development. Joan also learned
how to use email to stay in contact with
her friends and attended "rusty hinges"
water aerobics later in life.
Those left to celebrate her life include
her three children, Michele Greiner and
her husband, Michael, of Fairfield, Ann
Oberg and her husband, Kevin, of Sioux
Falls, S.D., and Patrick Barlow and his
wife, Lila (Haymaker) of La Crosse,
Wis.; four grandchildren, Alex Greiner,
Kara Jo Greiner, Kathryn Barlow, and
Paula Barlow: sisters-in-law Viola
Sheehy, Patricia Sheehy, Esther Sheehy,
Mary Margaret Sheehy, Betty Bernhardt,
Marion Barlow, Sharon Taylor (Garry),
and Carol Barlow; brothers-in-law, Doug
Bailey, Rich-ard Barlow (Louise), and
several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Joan was preceded in death by her
husband, Jack, her parents, her brothers
Ted, John (Jack), Jim, and Tom; her
sisters Patricia, Mary, Sr Sean (Rita)
OP, and Ruth Ann as well as many aunts,
uncles, nieces and nephews.
The family requests that in lieu of
flowers, donations be made to the Newman
Foundation, KCMR radio, or a charity of
the donor's choice that reflects their
memories of Joan.

Margaret Illene Barth
HOUSTON,
Texas - Margaret Illene Barth was born
in Topeka, Kansas Feb. 1, 1921, and
passed away May 14, 2012.
Margie graduated from High School in
Kansas City before moving to San Diego
during World War II to seek employment.
San Diego is where she married Eddie
Wechsler and they owned a restaurant
bar. They later had their first daughter
Margaret. In 1953 Eddie passed away.
A few years later, she met her soon to
be husband DeWayne Barth. She and
DeWayne moved to Sasebo, Japan, for two
years, where the Navy deployed them,
DeWayne was a US Arizona World War II
survivor. Margie had her second daughter
Deborah in Japan.
In the sixties they retired back to
DeWayne's home town of Forest City.
Margie enjoyed her time spent raising
her two daughters, and the times with
her two grandchildren Cristi and Brad
who were the loves of her life. She
enjoyed her volunteer work at her church
and other numerous organizations in
Iowa. In 1999, she and DeWayne moved to
Houston to be closer to their family.
She resided at the Terrace. Margie
enjoyed taking trips, playing cards,
gambling and especially shoe shopping.
Margie is preceded in death by her
beloved grandson Bradley Ambroson;
husband DeWayne Barth; and four sisters,
Helen, Cora, Collette and Ann.
She is survived by her daughters
Margaret Ambroson and her husband Tom;
and Deborah Arns and her husband Jim;
and granddaughter Cristi Ambroson. She
will be greatly missed by her family and
friends.
At the family's request donations can be
made to the National Parkinsons
Foundation or Evercare Hospice.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anne's
Church, 2140 Westheimer, Thursday, May
17, at 10:30 a.m. Rite of Committal will
follow at Houston National Cemetery,

MASON
CITY - Donald William Garner, 62, of
Mason City, died Sunday, May 13, 2012,
at his home.
A memorial service for Donnie will be
held at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 17, at
the Grace United Methodist Church, 200
14th St. N.W., Mason City with the
Reverend Steve Hansen officiating. A
visitation will be held one hour prior
to the memorial service at the church.
Should friends desire, a memorial fund
has been established in Donnie's name at
Wells Fargo Bank in Mason City.
Donald William Garner, the son of Warren
and Margaret (Wirth) Garner was born
June 14, 1949 in Otranto. He moved to
Mason City where he attended school.
Donnie worked at the Armor meat packing
plat and married Jackie Neilson. To this
union, two children were born, Shane and
Kelly. Later divorcing, Donnie worked as
a carpenter working for many companies.
He was united in marriage to Debra
Miller and to this union, two children
were born, Erin and Emily. In 1995, he
divorced Deb and in 2001, Donnie retired
from the construction business, injuring
his back.
Donnie was an avid fisherman, designing
and creating his own fishing equipment.
He loved to deer hunt and enjoyed
spending time with his children and
grandchildren. One of his favorite
things he enjoyed was eating
filet-o-fish's from McDonalds. He will
be greatly missed by his best friend,
Bear his Dog.
Donnie is survived by his four children,
Shane Garner and his friend, Penny
Gordon of Mason City, Kelly (Kathy)
Garner of Haward, Minn., Erin Garner and
her friend, Kattie Havig of Mason City
and Emily Garner of Mason City, nine
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren,
stepmother, Aggie Garner of Clear Lake;
stepsisters, Della Hauge of Des Moines,
Laura Shultz, Roxanne Ropella and Mona
Meade, all from Mason City, his special
friend, Pam and her kids and his best
friend, Bear, his dog.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
brother, Roger; grandson, Kolton and
brother-in-law, Gerald Best.

also enjoyed writing poetry and had one
of his pieces published. Johnny had a
love for animals, and found joy in
caring for his pit bull "Rizzle" and his
cat "Lahana."
Johnny is survived by his mother: Shelly
Lybarger of Albert Lea, Minn.; his
father: Jerry Lybarger of Albert Lea;
two brothers: Troy Lybarger and wife
Monica of Klemme, and Travis Lybarger of
Klemme; Johnny's girlfriend: Jennifer
Reuter of Hastings, Minn.; four special
nieces and nephews: Brooklyn, Alisa,
Ben, and Bryan; special aunts: Mary Jane

and Brenda Easley of Des Moines. He is
also survived by several uncles, aunts,

Lance was born May 3, 1939, in Manning,
to Dr. Ronald O. Sr. and Mary Jane
Masters. In 1945, the family relocated
to Mason City where Lance attended
school and enjoyed many outdoor
activities. Lance was active in Boy
Scouts; he achieved the rank of Eagle
Scout, served as camp counselor, and was
inducted into the Order of the Arrow.
Following his graduation from Mason City
High School in 1957, Lance attended Iowa
State Teachers College in Cedar Falls,
and DePauw University in Green Castle,
Ind. He received his Doctors degree in
1962 from Palmer Chiropractic College in
Davenport. For the next 25 years, Dr.
Lance enjoyed practicing his profession
at Masters Chiropractic Clinic with his
father Dr. R.O. Sr., his uncle, Dr.
Bill, and his brothers, Dr. Ron and Dr.
Mike Masters. Dr. Lance retired from
practice in 1987 and spent many
fulfilling years traveling, sailing,
working on various ecology projects
(which included helping develop Manatee
Reserves in Belize, Central America),
and attaining a Black Belt in Kung Fu.
Lance is survived by his wife, Linda
Blair Masters of Phoenix, Ariz.;
children, Melinda Masters and husband
David of Arcadia, Fla., Dr. Blair
Masters and wife Stephna of Lowell,
Ark., Joy Masters Pacura and husband Tim
of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Joshua Masters
of Scottsdale, Ariz.; five precious

Lonnie was a loving Wife, a devoted
Daughter, a Loving Sister, an amazing
Mother, a dedicated Grandmother and a
caring Aunt.
Lonnie and Bill were married for 48
years and they lived in Iowa until 1988.
Then they moved to Michigan, Virginia,
North Carolina, and Pennsylvania until
they retired in Haines City, Florida.
Preceding her in death are; mother Lupe

- Shawn Kenneth Eugene Thompson, 29,
Kensett, died Monday, May 14, 2012, as a
result of injuries he received in a
tractor roll over accident west of
Kensett.
A memorial service for Shawn will be
held 11 a.m. Friday, May 18, at the Elk
Creek Lutheran Church, 4108 Killdeer
Ave., rural Kensett, with Pastor Tom
Martin officiating.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on
Thursday at the Conner Colonial Chapel,
1008 First Ave. South, Northwood.
Visitation will also be held one hour

Shawn was born on March 4, 1983, in
Ventura, Calif., the son of Steven
Howard and Christine (Behr) Thompson.
Shawn graduated from Northwood-Kensett
High School in the class of 2002. During
his life, Shawn worked for S&K Pallets
in Clear Lake, Northwood Elevator, and
up until the time of his death he worked
for Gavilon Grain Elevator in Joice.
Shawn enjoyed fishing, farming,
gardening, wrestling, and taking care of
his animals, but his greatest love and
enjoyment was his son David, and
spending time with his family and
friends.
He was a member of Elk Creek Lutheran
Church in Kensett.
Those left to cherish his memory are his
son David Thompson of Clear Lake; his
mother, Christine (Behr) Thompson of
Kensett; his sister and brothers, Dawn
(Keith) Thompson-Julius of Madison Lake,
Minn., Zeke Thompson and special friend
Jessica Iverson of Kensett, Matt
(Ashley) Thompson of Northwood, Luke
Thompson and fiancee Sarah Coyle of
Manly; his sister, Tracy and her family
of Minneapolis, Minn.; his nieces and
nephews, Jewell and Bailey Thompson,
Jonah and Braeden Julius, and Journey
Thompson; his grandmother, Mary Behr of

closest to Shawn, he was more than just
a father, son, and brother, but as a
best friend.

April 10, 2005, and his paternal

Mason City, entered into the kingdom of
heaven on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at the
Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit
surrounded by his family.
Memorial services will be held 10:30
a.m. Friday, May 18, at St. James
Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E.,
with Pastor Paul Nelson officiating.
Inurnment will take place in the Rock
Falls Cemetery at a later date.
A gathering of friends and family will

Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N.

Don was born in Story City, on July 14,
1934, the son of Lyle and Sylva (Rullestad)
Abrahamson. He graduated from Plymouth
High School in 1951 and Mason City
Junior College in 1953. He was united in
marriage to Janice White on June 10,
1956. Don served in the United States
Military from 1957-1959 at Fort Bragg in
Fayetteville, N.C. After serving his
country, he returned to Mason City where
he had a long and successful career as
an insurance agent for Central Life
Assurance Company. After retiring from
the insurance business, he followed his
passion for cars by working as a car
salesman at McKinley Motors in Osage.
While Don enjoyed his career, his family
and friends were the most important to
him. He enjoyed wintering in Arizona
with Jan. When he wasn't on the golf
course, he could be found having coffee
with friends, walking at the mall,
playing cards, and volunteering at the
hospital and St. James Lutheran Church,
where he was a member for many years.
Don enjoyed watching sports and was an
arm chair quarterback for the Hawkeyes
and Vikings. He was very involved in the
lives of his children and grandchildren,
and took great joy in spending time with
them.
Those left to celebrate his life include
his wife, Jan of Mason City; two
children, Cindy Wickwire and her
husband, Scott, and David Abrahamson and
his wife, Stacey, all from Mason City;
four grandchildren, Lieh Anne Eriksen

age 91, of New Hampton, died surrounded
by his family Monday evening, May 14,

Parish - St. Joseph Center, New Hampton
with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the

Vincent A. "Timmy" Burgart was born on
the Burgart family farm in rural Ionia,
on Jan. 6, 1921. He was the youngest
child of Michael J. and Theresa M. (Peske)
Burgart. He received his education at
St. Mary's Grade School and High School
in North Washington. On Sept. 22, 1949,
at St. Boniface Catholic Church in
Ionia, he married Francella C. Schmitz.
To this union six children were born.
Timmy farmed the Burgart family farm, a
Heritage Farm settled by his family in
1855. He and Francella retired and moved
into New Hampton in 1997. During his
farming years he raised purebred
Herefords, and raised, broke and sold

Bud was born April 14, 1924, in Mason

High School. Bud enlisted in the US Army
during WWII and would later enlist in
the US Navy during the Korean War. Bud
worked for the Federal Government in the
Soil & Water Conservation Department for
30 years. He retired in 1979.

VISTA, Ark. - Duane Onley Newton, 80, of
Bella Vista, Ark. died Thursday, May 10,
2012, at Circle of Life - Legacy in
Bentonville, Ark. He was born on Aug.
24, 1931, in Nora Springs, to Theonley
Newton and Elsa Marah Newton. Duane
married Shirley Hicks on Aug. 2, 1969,
in Coon Rapids.
He graduated from the State Teachers
College of Iowa, where he played
baseball, and served in the U.S. Army
during the Korean Conflict. He received
his masters degree from Drake
University. "Newt" taught, coached and
was an administrator in the NESCO and
Colo-NESCO school districts for 39
years. He was inducted into the Iowa
High School Baseball Coaches and
Athletic Directors Halls of Fame.
In his retirement, he moved to Bella
Vista from Zearing. Newt enjoyed
fishing, golfing with the Oldies and
9-hole groups, gardening, and watching
baseball and the Razorbacks. He was a
member of the Bella Vista Community
Church, and a 50 year member of American
Legion Post 116.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley
Newton of Bella Vista; two sons, Thomas
Newton (Becky) of Des Moines,
Christopher Newton of Springdale, Ark.;
one brother, Jerry Newton (Joyce) of
Charles City; twin grandchildren, Roy
and Claire.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services will be held at 10
a.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Zearing
Cemetery. A luncheon at the Zearing
United Methodist Church will follow the
service.

the Checker Flag café and later worked
at LD's and N.I.A.C.C.
Patti married Tim Wilmarth Dec. 31,
1994. She enjoyed trips to Mystic Lake
and Diamond Jo's; walking in East Park
with Tim and her dog Sophie. Patti
cherished time with her family and the
LDs girls. She was known for her cooking
and was written up in Where America Eats
about her hot beef and homemade pies.

Paul Martin "Marty" Davidson

- Paul Martin "Marty" Davidson, 63, of
Oskaloosa died Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at
Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des
Moines as the result of injuries
sustained in a motorcycle accident on
April 22, 2012.
He was the son of Burdon and Doris
Nelson Davidson, born on March 28, 1949,
at Riverside, Calif. He graduated from
Clear Lake Iowa High School with the
class of 1968. Following high school he
served in the United States Army.
Following his discharge he returned to
Mason City and went to work for
Winnebago Industries.
On May 13, 1972, he was united in
marriage to Trudy Wyscarver in
Oskaloosa. In 1973 they moved to
Boulder, Colo., where Marty worked for
Pepsi Cola driving a route truck. In
1976, they moved to Oskaloosa and he
continued to work for Pepsi and later
Marty started his career as a long-haul
driver, first for Lynn's Transport, Food
Liner and currently for West Side
Transit out of Cedar Rapids.
He was a member of the Eagles, V.F.W.
and ABATE. He enjoyed riding
motorcycles, animals (especially dogs),
target shooting, reading, watching
movies and was an avid Minnesota Vikings
Fan.
His family includes his wife of 40
years, Trudy Davidson of Oskaloosa; two
children, Wade Davidson (and Amy Hines)
of Pella and Paige Davidson (and Casey
Mathes) of Pella; three grandchildren,
Naden and Olivia Davidson and Mira
Mathes; his father; a brother, Lee
Davidson of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a
sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and
Terry Osborn of University Park; and
nieces and nephews, Abby Wilson, Alex
Osborn, Elizabeth, Rachel and Chris
Davidson.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Open visitation will begin Friday after
11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in
Oskaloosa, and the family will be
present from 5-7 Friday evening to greet
friends and relatives. As was his wish,
he will be cremated following the
visitation and no formal services are
planned.

"Bill" Harrold, a longtime Charles City
businessman, passed away Wednesday, May
16, 2012, at his home.
Per Bill's request no service will be
held. A celebration of life for the
family is being planned.
William H. Harrold was born in Olney,
Ill., the son of William H. and Opal
Crosby Harrold. The family later moved
to Iowa and settled near Greene. After
graduating from Greene High School, Bill
continued his education at Ann Arbor,
Mich., and became a supervisor for Ford
Motor Company. Upon his return to Iowa
Bill became owner of B&H Transport
Company with offices in Mason City,
Greene and Pocahontas. Before his
retirement he ventured into real estate
and maintained an office at 101 North
Main Street in Charles City.
He was a past member of the Lions Club,
Charles City Country Club and
Congregational Church where he earlier
served as a deacon. He also attended
Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church
with his family.
Annual fishing trips with his children,
golfing with his friends, card games
with the Field family and spending time
with his grandchildren and special
nephew Ethan brought great joy to his
life.
Bill will be remembered for his
kindness, honesty, respect for others,
devotion and caring ways to his family,
and his infectious smile.
Living family members include his wife,
Dianne Harrold; his children, Robert
(Tonya) Harrold, Barbara (John) Jansee,
Bill (Barb) Harrold Jr., Becky (Chet)
Scott, Bruce Harrold and Mark (Karen)

Jessie L. Nelson was born on May 21,
1924, in Chicago, Ill., to Frederick and
Jessie (Stewart) Packman. Her mother
died in childbirth and she was raised by
her maternal aunt and uncle, Lillian and
Tobias Tobiason of Forest City. She
attended several country schools and
Forest City High School but graduated
from Von Steuben High School in Chicago.
On May 7, 1943, Jessie was united in
marriage to Vernon C. Nelson in the
First Baptist Church Parsonage in Van
Nuys, Calif. After World War II they
made their home in Forest City, where
Vernon worked as a carpenter and
contractor until retirement.
Their first child, Jean Louise, died at
birth but they were blessed with three
more daughters, Carol, Nancy and
Annette.
Jessie was saved in her early 20s and
loved the Lord. She taught Sunday School
for many years at Calvary Baptist
Church. She loved music and had a song
for every occasion. She was always
cheerful and optimistic. She was a
member of the Happy Hour Birthday Club
and the Ladies Mission Circle at Calvary
Baptist Church.
Jessie is survived by her daughters,
Carol (Don) Collings, Washington, Iowa,
Nancy (James Gabriel) Nelson, Forest
City, Annette (John) Nissen, Audubon,
Iowa; six grandsons, Jon (Marda)
Collings, Jay (Erin) Collings, Darren

Betty Ruth Burd was born August 14,
1926, in Meta, Missouri, the daughter of
Reverend Warren E. and Verna M.
(Jackson) Burd. She graduated in 1944
from Iberia High School in Iberia,
Missouri; she also graduated from
Nurse's Training in Marshalltown in
1948. She was married in Keokuk on July
6, 1952, to Raymond R. Schumaker. Betty
and Raymond were blessed with eight
children. She was a member of the First
Church of the Nazarene.
Betty was a lifelong Christian who
enjoyed attending church, spending time
with her children and grandchildren,
dinning out and embroidering. Betty
loved horses and was an avid John Wayne
fan who enjoyed watching John Wayne
movies, collecting memorabilia and
attending the annual John Wayne Festival
in Winterset.
Betty was known for many things,
including her quick wit and sense of
humor, her fried chicken and how she
lived life with zeal and loved to be on
the go, which led to her famous response
when asked if she wanted to go
somewhere: "All I have to do is get my
shoes on." Betty was getting her shoes
on and on the go until the two days
before her death.
Betty's life served as an example to
many who knew her, especially in her
roles as a Christian and as a mother.
Betty was known as "Ma Schu" to
countless friends of her children and
others she befriended throughout her
life. Her most cherished role on earth
was the one all of her children know she
was born to do, and that was the role of
mother.
Betty is survived by her eight children,
Bruce Schumaker (Shelly) of Olathe,
Kan., Jeff Schumaker (Pam) of Denver,
Colo., Robert Schumaker of Nora Springs,
Kay Schumaker of Mason City, Sandra
Servantez (Michael) of Mason City, Roger
Schumaker (Brenda) of Nora Springs, Tony
Schumaker of Mason City, and Terry
Schumaker (Sherri Olson) of Mason City;
sister, Joyce Foster and husband Al of
Kansas City, Missouri; 11 grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren who knew
her as grandma-great.

years old. Charles was born March 17,

years where he worked as an Electrical
Engineer and retired as a District Sales
Manager. He was a long time member of
Manufacturers' Golf and Country Club and
the Reformed Church of Willow Grove.

LELAND - Harold (Tub)
Melvin Miller, 70, of Leland, died
Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Hospice of
North Iowa, in Mason City.
Harold Miller was born April 8, 1942, to
Wilbur and Vera (O'Donnell) Miller. He
attended high school in Osage and served
three years in the Navy.
Harold worked at various jobs throughout
the years including Bell Telephone, Ford
Manufacturing, Winnebago Industries, was
assistant manager at the bowling alley
and drove limo in Chicago.
Harold recently delivered the Sunday Des
Moines Register and had a candy machine
route.
Harold enjoyed bowling, fishing,
camping, old cars, old 50's/60's and
country music, and playing softball. For
the last 28 years he has enjoyed being
with his special friend Jan Blankenship,
playing penny cribbage, gambling,
gardening, watching birds and had
traveled to the Gulf in their motor
home. Harold had a great love of dogs
and growing roses.
He is survived by his mother Vera
(Miller) Ross of St. Ansgar, brother
Duane Miller of Boaz, Ala., sister
Annette Bryan of Florida, daughter Marla
Sgarbossa (Joseph) of Illinois, sons
Harold Britt Jr. (Laurie) of Florida,
Michael Britt (Gina) of Illinois and
stepson Dean Storgaard of St. Ansgar, 11
grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren; special friend of
28 years, Jan Blankenship of Leland, and
her children Leslie Grothe, Todd
Blankenship (Joni) and Robin Peterson
(David) their children and
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father,
Wilbur Miller and stepdaughter Susie
Storgaard.
A memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m.
Friday, June 29, at St. James Catholic
Church in Forest City. Family and
friends are welcome to attend.

Oehlert
CLEAR
LAKE - Dave Oehlert, 63, of Clear Lake,
passed away Tuesday May 16, 2012, at
home. The family suggest memorials may
be given to Hospice of North Iowa.
A time of sharing memories will be from
4-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, at the Clear
Lake, V.F.W. 219 Main Ave, Clear Lake.
Dave B. Oehlert, son of Howard and Verna
(Davis) Oehlert, was born on March 31,
1949. He attended Ventura elementary and
graduated from Ventura High School in
1967. He was a standout halfback on a
powerful Viking football team.
Dave went to Mason City Junior College and later to Mankato College.
That's where Dave hooked up with
Minnesota Vikings traveling around in
winter for area basketball games to play
area high school coaches, where he was
known as the Goatman by the Vikings and
it wasn't uncommon to have the old
Viking Players at his house.
Dave came back home to help with the
Oehlert farm operation. Later on he
drove many a load of corn for Karen &
Gary Peters.
Back in the day, Dave's passion was
stock car racing. He would rub fenders
with Harvey Pattersen, Jerry Hejna and
Billy Olson. Dave was always famous for
winning the B-Feature at the race track.
Dave was happy when he was painting
houses. He painted quite a few in the
Clear Lake area. Dave loved spending
time with his golfing buddies especially
Stu and Gene Parr and Bob Hagen. Never a
dull moment, Dave would fire up his
poison pen and write an editorial. Some
were quite clever.
Dave was loved by all and will be missed
by many.
Dave is survived by brother, Richard
(Cherie) Oehlert and their children Jon
(Cassie) Sheer and their children Hayden
and Lyla ; Angie (Ray) Powell and their
children Teaghan and Tierney; brother,
Garry (Julie) Oehlert and their children
Brooke Nowell and her son Trenton, Grant
Oehlert, Syretta (Josh) Groves, and
their children Blake, Riley and Jace;
Andy (Bethany) Monson, and their
children Carly and Lehman; cousin Chuck
Stepleton, Uncle Oscar Davis, along with
several cousins, nieces, nephews and
other family members and friends.
Dave was preceded in death by his
mother, Verna, father Howard, infant
sister Margaret Ann and his aunt Maxine
Davis.

"Jim" Alexander
HAMPTON
- James "Jim" Alexander, age 84, of
Hampton, passed away Thursday, May 17,
2012, at his home with his loving wife,
Joan, at his side.
Funeral services will be Monday, May 21,
at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Hampton with Pastor Wayne Hagen and Rev.
Dr. Tim Diebel officiating. Burial will
be in the Hampton Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 20, from
4 to 7 p.m. at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral
Home in Hampton. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral
Home in Hampton is in charge of the
arrangements.
Jim was born April 22, 1928, to James M.
and Mildred (Kleinmeyer) Alexander. He
was united in marriage to Joan Roose on
Aug. 20, 1950.
Jim graduated from UNI and the
University of Iowa. He was
superintendent of schools for 38 years -
two at Fairbank, eight at Wapsie Valley
and 28 at Hampton. Jim was president of
the Iowa Association of School
Administrators, Iowa Girls Athletic
Union, Hampton Rotary, Hampton Country
Club and St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Jim is survived by his wife, Joan;
children Ellen (Jim) Cooper, Wanda
Alexander, Lori (Tim) Diebel, Sherry
(Paul) Mott, and Steve (Deb) Alexander;
grandchildren Jessica, Allison and Joe
Cooper, Alexander and Ryan Mott, and
Kimberly Alexander; stepchildren
Christopher (Dawn) Cooper, Christopher
and Merryl Diebel, and Brittany Hanson;
great-grandchild, Nathan Cooper; and two
sisters, Mrs. Sarah Ruth (Raymond) Poppe
and Mary Brassard.
Jim was preceded in death by his
parents, an infant son, Brian James
Alexander, and two brothers-in-law, Rev.
LaVern Brassard and John Roose.

- Gaylord LaVon Kuhlmann, 80, Northwood,
died Thursday, May 17, 2012, at the
Manly Nursing and Rehab Center.
A funeral service for LaVon will be held
at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at the First
Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St.,
Northwood, with Pastor Karen Rossing
Grandall officiating. Burial will be in
the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 7
p.m. on Monday at the Conner Colonial
Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood.
Military graveside honors will be
accorded by members of Our Buddies VFW
Memorial Post No. 6779 of Northwood.
Visitation will also be held one hour
prior to service time on Tuesday at the
church.
Gaylord LaVon Kuhlmann was born on Dec.
5, 1931, in Northwood, the son of
Gaylord and Guida (Stalheim) Kuhlmann.
LaVon received his education in the
Northwood Public School system,
graduating from Northwood High School.
He was inducted in the Air Force on Dec.
22, 1951, in Des Moines, and served his
country honorably and faithfully with
the 11th Bomber Wing, and was discharged
on Dec. 6, 1955, at Carswell Air Force
Base at Ft. Worth, Texas. After his
discharge from the Air Force he learned
the trade of drywalling. He then moved
to California.
He was united in marriage to Joyce
Volger on Sept. 21, 1957, at the
Hollywood Lutheran Church in Hollywood,
Calif. They moved to Northwood and LaVon
started a drywalling business and
continued in the business until his
retirement.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback
riding, camping and taking his family on
hunting and horseback-riding trips.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church
in Northwood, the state Muscular
Dystrophy Associations, and the Saddle
Seekers club.
Those left to cherish his memory are his
children, Gail Kuhlmann and her fiancé,
DuWayne Bottleman, of Northwood, and
Gail's son, Gerad (Julia Brunner)
Kuhlmann, Linda (Bob) Link of Northwood,
and their children, Amber (Tim Ouverson)
Carlson, Laura Carlson and Garrett
Carlson, Kathy Rush of Clear Lake and
her children Aaron Rush and his fiancé,
Katie Dahl, and Jordan Rush; five
great-grandchildren: Dylon, Collin,
Jocelyn, Trinity, and Renae; his
sisters, Marcile (Dean) Perry of New
Ulm, Minn., Bev (Glenn) Davis of New
York, and Dodie (Jerry) Belanger of New
Hope, Minn.; his sisters- and
brothers-in-law, Cherie Volger, Joanne
(Dick) McCrillis and Don (Donna) Volger;
as well as several nieces, nephews and
many other extended family members and
friends.
LaVon was preceded in death by his
parents; wife, Joyce; son, Gary; and two
grandsons, Joshua Kuhlmann, and Cody
Cox.

- Funeral services for Ralph Litterer,
89, of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m.,
Monday, May 21, 2012, at the Church of
the Brethren in Greene, with Pastor
Ashok Patet officiating. Burial will be
in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, with
military honors conducted by
Tack-Barnett Post 268, American Legion
of Greene.

First St., Greene, with a Scripture
service at 7 p.m.
Ralph Carl Litterer was born on April 8,
1923, in Butler County, Iowa, the eldest
of 12 children blessed to Theophil and
Elsie (Witt) Litterer.
He entered eternal rest on Thursday, May
17, 2012, at the University of Iowa
Hospital in Iowa City.
He received his education in country
school. As a young man he worked as a
farm hand. He was inducted into the
United States Army Air Force on April 2,
1943, and served as an airplane
mechanic. Ralph was honorably discharged
on Feb. 20, 1946. Later he worked for
Pooley's Implement and for Hamilton and
Gabe.
On May 29, 1950, Ralph was united in
marriage to Ardys Pauline Barth at the
United Church of Christ Pleasant Hill in
rural Nashua. This union was blessed
with one daughter and two sons.
Ralph worked for Van Dyke Cars and Barth
Chevrolet (for more than 20 years)
before becoming self-employed as the
owner of Ralph's Co-op Service. He
retired at the age of 65, but for only
one year. At the age of 66 Ralph became
a city worker, working for Greene where
he remained for the next 14 years.
Following his true retirement at age 80
he remained active helping his family
and friends build their homes or helping
out with any work that needed to be
done. He was a "Jack of all Trades" and
mastered them all.
He was a member of the Church of the
Brethren in Greene where he served as a
deacon, usher and maintenance man. Ralph
was very active in church activities and
with a cheerful heart was always willing
to perform any duty presented to him.
Ralph is survived by his loving wife of
61 years, Ardys; one daughter: Jolene
(Jason) Jenkins, Woodlawn, Tenn.; two
sons: Douglas (Connie) Litterer of
Greene, and Bruce (Jerilynn) Litterer of
Woodlands, Texas; seven grandchildren:
Tracy (Mike) Martzahn, Sara (Marty)
Adelmund, Kristy (Jeremy) Hovde, Mandy
(Richard) Frost, Melissa (Kevin)
Blackwood, Shawn (Molly) Litterer, Megan
