J. Marlin Hawley

Mason City - J. Marlin Hawley, 72, of Mason City, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, May 3, 2012.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Monday, May 7, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E., with Pastor Patti Aurand officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, Sunday, May 6, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

John Marlin Hawley, was born Jan. 18, 1939, in Doniphan, Mo., the son of John K. and Elma (Portor) Hawley. He graduated from Woodbine High School in 1967. John was married to Judy Schueler in December of 1967 in Sioux Falls, S.D. To this union one son, Mark, was born. Marlin co-owned H.R. Block for more than 40 years with his wife, Judy. During these years they met many people in Mason City.

Through the years he also worked road construction, drove truck and delivered Winnebago motorhomes all over the country. He enjoyed rebuilding cars and restoring old tractors. In his younger years he enjoyed riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles and driving fast cars. Often people would say he resembled the actor John Wayne in many ways.

He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters.

Marlin was a long-time member of First Congregational United Church of Christ.

He is survived by his son, Mark Hawley and wife, Jackie, of Nevada, Iowa; two grandchildren: Beverly and Katherine; sisters Donna Collins and husband, Gary, of Council Bluffs, Barbara Hawley of Omaha, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy, in 2007; and one sister, Beverly Oloff.

KANAWHA - Inez Irene Johnson, 89, of Kanawha, died Friday, May 4, 2012, at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services for Inez Johnson will be held on Tuesday, May 8, at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Kanawha with Pastor Tim Rieckhoff-Faris officiating. Burial will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.

Joanna Helene Johnson

Clear Lake - Joanna Helene Johnson, 79, of Clear Lake, died Friday, May 4, 2012, at Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 7, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. Interment will be in Lincoln Township Cemetery.

Joanna was born Sept. 30, 1932, in Mason City, the daughter of Lawrence and Olufine (Fister) Vermedal. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City, where she was a life-long member. Joanna attended grade school in Central Heights and graduated from Mason City High school. She worked at Gretchen's Sweets and Houck Drug Store.

Joanna married Marlin S. Johnson on Jan. 21, 1954. She farmed with Marlin until they retired from farming in 2009.

Joanna loved her family and friends and spent much of her spare time doing things with them and for them. She had a laugh as big as her heart. Joanna loved to collect frogs, and her collection numbered in the thousands.

She was proud of her heritage, was a member of the Sons of Norway and enjoyed visiting her extended family in Norway, especially her cousins Magne and Reidun Brekke.

Joanna loved to sing and her favorite song was "You are My Sunshine." She enjoyed playing cards, and she loved her pets. Joanna and Marlin enjoyed taking driving trips, and they kept a large garden.

Joanna is survived by her husband, Marlin, of Clear Lake; two brothers-in-law, Amil Johnson, of Clear Lake, and Floyd (Norma) Johnson, of Clear Lake; nine nieces and nephews: Terry Vermedal, of Naperville, Ill., Becky (Tom) Hall, of Mason City, Ric (Jean) Vermedal, of Mason City, Randy (Beth) Johnson, of Clear Lake, Julie (Stuart) Oltrogge, of Eagan, Minn., Jackie Wilson, of West Des Moines, Mark Johnson, of Clear Lake, Kathy (John) Hendricks, of Minneapolis, Minn., Karen (Dean) Jurgens, of Thornton; and grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. She is also survived by special friend Sally Eichmeier of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Paul Vermedal and his wife, Peg; sister-in-law Francis Doran and her husband, Harold; sister-in-law Helen Johnson; brother-in-law Wally Johnson; and niece Karen Vermedal.

Mildrid "Joanne" Nickson

Lake Mills - Mildrid "Joanne" Nickson, age 62, of Lake Mills, died Friday, May 4, 2012, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 7, 2012,at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main St. in Lake Mills, with Pastor Ted Barthels officiating.

Burial will take place in the Synod Evangelical Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be today, Sunday, May 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mittelstadt Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to services on Monday.

Mildrid Joanne Nickson was born on Nov. 14, 1949, in Forest City, to parents Robert and Mildrid (Tjernagel) Nickson. She was the oldest of four children. When special education was implemented into the school, Joanne attended Lake Mills Community School until she was 21 years old.

Joanne enjoyed immersing herself in books and encyclopedias. She taught herself to write and type, and she had many spiritual conversations with her mother. Joanne's mom, Mildrid, was constantly making sure that Joanne understood everything that they discussed. After her schooling, Joanne took it upon herself to make arrangements to move to the Winnebago County Home, and then Opportunity Village in Clear Lake. She loved the time spent at both residences and felt like family.

In 2007, Joanne became a resident of the Lake Mills Care Center. Joanne was a wonderful swimmer and spent many hours at the pool in Lake Mills.

Survivors include two brothers, Kenneth (Darcy) Nickson and Lee (Barb) Nickson, all of Lake Mills; a sister-in-law, Debbie (Michael) Chisholm; and nieces and nephews, Shannon (Ryan) Kesler, Crystal (Chris) Cockrum, Brook (Justin) Byars, Alisha (Dan) Mielke, Toni (Jared) Nicol, Brett Nickson, Michael (Dana) Chisholm, and Cody Nickson. She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews, aunty and uncles, and extended relatives.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mildrid; a brother, Gerald Nickson; and a nephew, Dillin Nickson.

Thomas E. Skellenger

Clear Lake - Thomas E. Skellenger, 66, 212 Seventh Ave N., Clear Lake, died Thursday, May 3, 2012, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 9, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Wendy Johannesen officiating.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at the funeral home.

Inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 W., Mason City.

Memorials may be given to the Thomas E. Skellenger family in care of the family.

Tom was born July 4, 1945, in Mason City, the son of Howard L. and Flossie (Porter) Skellenger.

He attended Clear Lake schools and started working for a construction business. Following that, he worked for a radiator shop in the state of Washington. He moved back to Iowa where he worked for and later purchased Jerry's Radiator Shop with his best friend Bob Angel. After selling Jerry's, Tom worked in a machine shop for NAPA, before going into A-1 Home Insulation. He retired in 2008.

Tom was united in marriage to Maureen "Reenie" Shannon Dec. 23, 1969, at Zion Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, S.D.; and to this union one child, Mitchell, was born.

Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, racing, woodworking, rod and reel repair and his family time. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.

Tom is survived by his wife Maureen "Reenie" Skellenger, Clear Lake; son Mitch Skellenger, Garner, and his special friend Trisha Schroeder, Clear Lake; granddaughter Andersyn Skellenger, Garner; grandsons Payne and Jaxon Schroeder, Clear Lake; brothers Charles (Nancy) Skellenger, Bakersfield, Calif., and William "Bill" Skellenger, Copperopolis, Calif.; nephews Steve (Barb) Skellenger, Clear Lake, Robert Skellenger, Mason City, Dan (Darcy) Skellenger, Clear Lake, and David Skellenger, Garner; special cousin Bill Bruns, Ozawkie, Kan.; and many cousins, nephews, nieces, great-cousins and great nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded by his parents; son Don Shahan; brothers Jack and Jim Skellenger; parents-in-law, John "Jack" and Shirley Shannon.

Elizabeth Mary "Betty" Staudt

Marble Rock - A Memorial Mass for Elizabeth Mary Staudt of Marble Rock will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Roseville (rural Marble Rock), Iowa. Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Roseville.

Visitation will be at the Roseville School from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, with a Scriptural Wake at 7 p.m., followed by a Rosary Service conducted by the St. Mary Rosary Society.

Elizabeth Mary Theis was born on October 7, 1934, in Ionia, Chickasaw Co., Iowa, a daughter of Lawrence "Larry" and Florence (McGowan) Theis and passed away Monday, April 30, 2012, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene following a brief and courageous battle with cancer.

She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Charles City. She worked for the Charles City Creamery through High School and was employed by Look Magazine in Des Moines following graduation.

Once married, she became a devoted homemaker and mother.

On October 2, 1954, she was united in marriage to Robert L. Staudt at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia. This union was blessed with seven children. The couple farmed east of Marble Rock until 1979, when they moved into town. In 2006, Betty moved to Friendship Acres, her home until her death.

Betty has been a long- time member of St. Mary Catholic Church where she belonged to the Rosary Society and taught CCD for many years. She was a 4-H Leader, member of several bowling leagues, and belonged to various bridge clubs. She enjoyed playing cards as well as many other games, visiting the casino, and was an avid reader. Her true passion was celebrating holidays and other special events with her family featuring her home made pies and desserts. Betty will be remembered as a devoted mother and especially a loving grandmother.

Loving family members include her children: Deb (David) Vermillion of Dale City, Va., Gary (Julie) Staudt of Iowa City, Tim (Jeanne) Staudt of Rockford, Bill (Carmen) Staudt of Rockford, Becky (John) Shook of Rockford, Vicky (Don) Gallagher of Casselberry, Fla., Sandy (John) Pieper of Ankeny; 19 grandchildren: Emily Vermillion, Elizabeth Vermillion, Aaron (Michelle) Staudt, Andy Staudt, Amanda (Ermin) Mehic, Maria Staudt, Barbara Staudt (fiancé Ryan Danielson), Sabrina Staudt, Alisha Staudt, Nate Staudt, Nicholas Staudt, Nicole (Doug) Schrage, Tony (Heather) Shook, Adam Shook, Sara Shook, Devan Gallagher, Will Pieper, Lucas Pieper, and Cole Pieper; great-grandchildren: Allison Staudt, Caden Schrage, Ava Schrage, Quinn Schrage, Charlotte Shook , and another baby on the way; one sister: Kathy (Don) Blocker of New Hampton, brother and sister-in-laws: Jim Rissler, Lynn (Nancy) Lorenzen, Russell (Betty Jo) Staudt and Tom (Evelyn) Cousins along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on March 18, 2002, her parents, her brother Jerry Theis, her sisters: Patricia Rissler and Ginger Lorenzen, and many close friends whom she loved as family.

Ronald R. Heinold

MASON CITY - Ronald R. Heinold, 82, of Mason City, went to be with his loving Savior Friday, May 4, 2012, at the IOOF Home.

Ron was born Sept. 19, 1929, in rural Mason City at home, the son of Elmer and Grace (Beenken ) Heinold. He received his education at Falls Township Country School, where he also met the love of his life, Dorothy Frazier. They were married on Aug. 16, 1948.

His first place of employment was 100 Sedars until they moved to the family farm.

Ron's passion in life was farming. He enjoyed the hard work that it took and always appreciated the farm and the life it gave to him. Upon retirement they moved to Mason City where he currently resided. He enjoyed working in sales for McNess Feeds, Lancer's Clothing and Gildner's Clothing Store. In his retirement years he drove the Mason City transit bus; which became another passion.
As an adult, Ron realized he was born a sinner in need of a savior. He prayed and asked Jesus into his heart and his desire was to serve and glorify God. He was a member of the Calvary Alliance Church, where he served as a head usher and board member. Later he became a regular attender at the Grace Evangelical Free Church.

Ron was surrounded by faithful friends and family, which he was extremely honored to have in his life. He enjoyed the time that he spent with his family and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Left to remember him are his wife, Dorothy Heinold of Mason City; children, Patricia Kammrad and husband, Dick, of Mason City, David Heinold and wife, Linda, of Rockwell, and Marilyn Brainerd and husband, Barrett, of Mason City; grandchildren, Nicole (Dan), Emily (Trevor), Misti (Tod), Jennifer (Shayne), Rachel, Dustin (Sandra) and Kim; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Vernon; and two sisters, Alma and Marian.

Dale Linn Reysack

AREDALE - Dale Linn Reysack, 58, of Aredale, passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2012, at the Dumont Wellness Center in Dumont.

He was born on Dec. 23, 1953, in Aredale, the son of Ecko, Sr., and Grace (Mehman) Reysack. Dale attended school in Dumont. He did handiwork for people in the community for many years. Dale was affiliated with the New Hope Parish of the United Methodist Church in Aredale and enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and playing horseshoes.

He is survived by two brothers, Harry Reysack and Bill Reysack, both of Dumont, and six sisters, Ella Mae of Oelwein, Dorothy Leake of Hemet, Lenora Ott of Fairbank, Grace Bandy of Waterloo, Marlene Harkin of Fairbank, and Barbara Harms of Hampton.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Ecko Reysack, Jr., and a sister, Mary Ellen Boehmke.

Burial will take place in the Dumont Cemetery. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Selma H. Gerszewski

Northwood - Selma H. Gerszewski, 90, of Northwood, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Northwood - David Curtis Johnson, 57, Northwood, died Monday, May 7, 2012, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

David was born on March 8, 1955, in Fort Dodge, the son of Curtis and Charlotte (Wenzel) Johnson. David attended school in Pomeroy, and graduated from high school in Pomeroy in 1973. He also graduated from Waldorf College in Forest City, and from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, with a double major in accounting and marketing. David began his career in the accounting field for Winnebago Industries in Forest City.

He was united in marriage to Teresa Paine on Feb. 12, 1983, in Pomeroy, and to this marriage three children were born: Matt, Jay, and Jessie. After their marriage they moved to Creston, before moving to Renwick, continuing his career in the accounting field, working for Eaton Corporation, before moving to Northwood in 1989, working for Fieldstone, and at the time of his death he worked for Cybex Industry in Owatonna, Minn.

David enjoyed golfing, gardening, cooking, and grilling, but his great love and enjoyment was spending time with his wife and children, and attending all their school and sports activities.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, and the Northwood Country Club.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Teresa Johnson of Northwood; his children, Matt (Morgan) Johnson, Jay Johnson, and Jessie (David) Reyerson all of Northwood; three very special grandchildren, Jaxon and Makayla Reyerson and Caleb Johnson; his brother, Paul (Carol) Johnson of Pomeroy; his two sisters, Lelaine (Don) Anderson of Humboldt, and Louise (Keith) Aljets of Williamsburg; his mother-in-law, Betty Lindberg of Clear Lake; his brother-in-law, Jim Paine of Council Bluffs; his sisters and brother-in-law, Kathy (Tim) Sinek of Arizona, and Paula (Troy) Lohrmann of Chicago, Ill.; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and many other extended family members and friends.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Charlotte Johnson; father-in-law, Paul Paine; and a special aunt, Marie "Ree" Oppedahl.

John Edmund "Jack" Lambert

ALBERT LEA, Minn. - Remembering the life of John "Jack" Edmund Lambert …
The Memorial Service for John "Jack" Lambert, Albert Lea, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May, 11, at St. Theodore Catholic Church. The Reverend Timothy T. Reker and Deacon Mike Ellis will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, and one hour before the service at the church.

Jack died on Monday, May 7, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health System Albert Lea. He was 76.

He was born John Edmund Lambert on Sept. 19, 1935, in Mason City, the son of Earl and Elizabeth (Swanson) Lambert.

He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Mason City in 1955.

Jack married Julie Petersen on April 24, 1966, in Clear Lake.

Jack had worked for Piggly Wiggly in Mason City as a meat cutter until he was transferred to the Albert Lea Store in 1966. He later worked for Hy-Vee, from which he retired in 1998 after 19 years of employment.

He was active in the Senior Bowling League, a former member of the Elks Club, and a current social member of the American Legion.
He enjoyed watching the Twins and the Vikings. He was an avid golfer and very proud of his hole-in-one, which he obtained at the age of 72.

His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with family and following his grandchildren's activities.

Jack is survived by wife Julie of Albert Lea, two children and their families, Brian Lambert and his wife Lisa and their children Shea and Shad of Medford, Minn.; Ann Marie and her husband Jeremy Knutson and their children Carsen and Kendra of Glenville, Minn.; sisters: Jean Dombrowski of Mason City, Mary Jane Coe of Littleton, Colo., Patricia Dempsey of Mason City, sister-in-law Janice (David) Humphrey of Aledo, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Elizabeth Lambert, brothers: Roger and Rollie Lambert; sister Maxine Lantz; brothers-in-law: Raymond Dombrowski, Arnold Coe, Paul Dempsey, Clyde Lantz and John Petersen; mother-in-law and father-in-law Everett and Bertha Petersen.

Gale E. Cook

OSAGE - Gale E. Cook, age 89, of Osage, formerly of Manly, died May 5th, 2012, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Graveside Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 12, at Urbana Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Walter J. Meycoks American Legion Post #264 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. There will be no visitation, according to his wishes.

Gale was born to Vernon and Pearl Cook on June 11, 1922, in Vinton. The family moved to Manly and then later to Charles City where he graduated from high school. He joined the Army Air Corps in October 1942, and was discharged May 1946, after serving in India and Burma.

Gale was united in marriage to Norma L. Hepker Aug. 9, 1947.

Gale was recalled to active duty October 1950, serving in Japan, the Philippines, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Illinois, and California, retiring August 1969. After the military, he worked for Procter & Gamble in California, and retired in 1984. Gale and Norma moved to the Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., living there ten years before returning to Iowa. Norma died March 27, 1996.

Gale married Beverly Metzger in November 1997, and she died March, 2002. He then married Nova Kobernusz in July 2003. They had recently moved to Apple Valley Assisted Living in Osage.
Gale was a life member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Gale is survived by his wife, Nova Cook of Osage; daughter Carol (Kenneth) Patterson of Lafayette, Ind.; three stepdaughters: Gloria (Alan) Ganshert of Osage; Racinda (Cindy) Metzger of Howell, N.J.; Ranita (Ron) Derocher of Westfield. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Scott (Toni), Brett (Heather), Krista Minton (Troy); three stepgrandchildren: Cassie, Cory, and Ryan; eight great-grandchildren: Christian, Tyler, Isaak, Ashlyn, Andrew, Luke, Dylan, and Amelia.

LaMont Earl Koppen was born in Bancroft, May 23, 1933, to Andrew and Zada (Cayler) Koppen.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Leland. He lived most of his life in north Iowa and was in the U.S. Army.

He was married on Dec. 23, 1974 to Vicki Jo Brown in South Dakota and they made their home in Crystal Lake. He worked for the railroad and then started farming. He worked for Winnebago from 1970-1993, when he retired to be with his wife through her illness. He loved to fish with his kids and to work on old cars.

LaMont is survived by his wife Vickie; his children, Cheri Lynn (Tom) Larson of Titonka; Randy Koppen, Leland, and Larry (Sylvia) Koppen of Arizona; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; three sisters Alvena (LeRoy) Ennen of Lone Rock; Gloria Lampe of Hubbard, and Carmala of California; one brother, Dick Koppen of California; one half-brother Albert Koppen of West Port, Minn. and two foster brothers, Morris (Alice) Ruby of Clear Lake and Todd (Bonnie) Ruby of Leland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his foster parents, a brother Bob Koppen and a foster brother Kenny Ruby.

She was baptized and confirmed in the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode and she graduated from Bode High School. She graduated from Waldorf College and continued her studies at the University in Cedar Falls. She taught school for 23 years in Fertile, Albert City, Coon Rapids and Forest City.
She was married to Max Nye on July 28, 1945 when he was in the U.S. Navy. Florence enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting and working crossword puzzles. She was a member of the Pilot Knob Lutheran Church and was involved in circle and Woman of Life.

Florence is survived by her husband Max and three sons, Roger (Johanna) Nye of Graham, Wa; Jerry Nye of Fertile and Brian (Cynthia) Nye of Longmont, Colo.; sister-in-law Rita Larson of Des Moines and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Elmer; Ernest; Donald; Maurice; Vilas; Gordon; Charles and Ralph and sisters Lillian (in infancy); Alice and Evelyn.

Marlyce Joan Wallace Roth

Bella Vista, Ark. - Marlyce Joan Wallace Roth, of Bella Vista, Ark., died April 29, 2012.

Services will be held at the Wesley United Church at 11 on Friday, May 11.

Marlyce Joan Wallace was born August 8, 1929 in Mason City to Claude Pearl and Grace Bates Wallace, joining two older brothers Claude, Jr. and Richard Wallace.After graduating from Mason City High School in 1947, she began a long career with Northwestern Bell, starting as an operator. Marlyce married Carl Louis Roth on July 31, 1949.

With Northwestern Bell, Marlyce proceeded to have various positions in Mason City, Omaha, and Des Moines until retiring in 1986 as a repair supervisor. In addition, Marlyce served as business manager for Roth Construction of Mason City. With Carl and their friends, Marlyce enjoyed camping and fishing in the Canadian boundary waters, traveling, playing cards and vacationing at the family cabin on the Cedar River in St. Ansgar. During retirement, Marlyce enjoyed being a nanny to several children in Des Moines, and spent several years living in Hudson and then St. Ansgar, making new friends. She enjoyed traveling with friends and family. In her later years, Marlyce moved back to Mason City, residing at the Willows Retirement Home and started new employment at Lundberg's. Since 2008, Marlyce has resided in Bella Vista, Ark. where she continued to enjoy reading fiction and watching the changing seasons, especially spring flowers and fall leaves, butterflies & birds.

Marlyce was a member of United Methodist Church, for many years at Wesley in Mason City and recently at First United Methodist Church in Bella Vista. Marlyce's first love was always her family, raising three loving sons of whom she was quite proud: Michael Bruce (Cathy Luck), David Alan (Sue Klahsen), and Jeffrey Scott (Linda Hassett). Spending time with grandchildren Geoff, Joe, Sara, Sean, Amanda, Alisa, Austin, John, Josh, Brittany, Shelby, Hannah and a great-grandson Graham, or just mentioning their names brightened her face and brought her joy. She had been looking forward to more graduations, weddings, accomplishments and hopefully great-grandchildren over the next several years.
Marlyce is survived by her children, grandchildren, two sisters-in-law Doris and Mary Wallace, and their extended families, as well as several cousins descending from the Wallace and Bates families of the Ladysmith, Wis., area. Her gentle caring and sweet smile will be missed by all.

Joan R. Weiler

WATERFORD, Wis. -Joan Ruth Comfort (nee: Walle) Weiler, age 84, of Waterford, passed away at her home on Thursday, May 3, 2012, surrounded by family.

Joan was born in Winona, Minn., on Nov. 12, 1927, to Christian and Ruth Walle. She graduated from Winona High School in 1945. She met and married her first husband, James Steward in 1947 and started their family of three children. Joan attended North Iowa Area Community College to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. In 1972 Joan moved to Wisconsin, working at Southern Center in Union Grove. There she met and married her second husband, Charles Weiler in 1975. Joan continued her education and received her Registered Nursing degree at Gateway Technical College. She worked at and retired from St Mary's Hospital in Racine in 1990.

Joan and her beloved husband, Charley, loved to travel the world and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Joan was proud of her Norwegian heritage. She was very active in the Norway Lutheran Church, Norway Choir, Martha Clausen Group and bible study. Joan was past president of the Bixby Hansen American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Red Hat Ladies. Joan was a special person, who always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone.

Joan is survived by three children: Michael (Linda) of Cornville, Ariz., Lawrence (Kathy) of Missouri City, Texas, and Carolyn Steward of Henderson, Nev., three stepchildren: William Weiler of Neillsville, Jane Babik of Rochester and Richard (Rose) Weiler of Burlington, 13 grandchildren: Jodi, Megan, Ryan, Jonathan, and Patrick Steward, Jennifer (Dan Grady), Terese, Kristin, Karen, Matthew Weiler, Melanie (Heiko) Wendel, Bradley (Angela) Sundstrom, and Kevin Babik, two great-grand children: Isabelle Sundstrom and Liam Grady with two additional great grandchildren to be born this summer to Brad and Angela and Melanie and Heiko, brother: David (Ellen) Walle, nephews: Gary (Kim), Greg (Kathy), Grant, and Guy Foat.
Joan was preceded in death by both husbands, her parents, stepmothers: Helen Walle and Grace Walle, sister and brother-in-law: Jean and Herbert Foat, grandson: Michael Steward, and sons-in-law: William Schnitkey and John Babik.

Services will be held Thursday May 10, 6 p.m. at Norway Lutheran Church, 6321 Heg Park Road, Wind Lake.
Visitation in church Thursday 4-5:45 p.m. Private burial at Union Grove Memorial Cemetery.
